A minor hockey game got out of hand on January 29, and the RCMP were called after a fight broke out on the ice among the young players. When Mounties arrived, they observed disruptive fans and parents yelling profanities at the referees. The Mounties remained in the arena until the end of the game in order to keep the peace and de-escalate the situation. Const. Carman Dutz said a complaint of assault is still under investigation. In a separate incident, RCMP recovered thousands of dollars worth of construction equipment stolen from a property in Wetaskiwin. The equipment was found in the Rimbey RCMP’s detachment area. Dutz said the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. A 29-year-old man from Breton faces charges of assault, uttering threats and failure to comply with conditions after RCMP investigated a complaint about a domestic disturbance in the Rimbey area.
As the domestic disturbance took place in front of two children under the age of 10, Child and Family Services were notified. The accused is to appear in Rimbey Provincial Court on March 4. Domestic violence continues to be an issue of great concern to the RCMP and community wellness groups, said Dutz. “Rimbey and District Victim Services Unit has trained staff and volunteers who have a compassionate ear and many resources to support people who find themselves in abusive relationships or some other traumatic incident,” he added. Rimbey RCMP continue to work with Canada Post to investigate mail theft in the area. There were two more incidents of vandalism to mailboxes in rural locations west of Rimbey reported last week and another break and enter to a rural property northwest of Rimbey.

Treena Mielke On The Other Side He is six-years-old and his hockey jersey hangs almost to his knees. But he is so cute, it doesn’t matter. His first game was Sunday and I was there in the bleachers waving and yelling and being all silly. The cool thing was when I waved; he looked up in the stands, saw me, took off his hockey glove and waved back. How many players do that? When he actually got the puck and fired (did I say fired?), perhaps carefully shot the puck at the net without falling over would be a better description, I

elbow my way through the crowd so I could be there in the stands watching her performance which lasted less than three minutes. I made it. Afterwards I stood with her mom and dad and her other grandparents and watched while she bent her little neck forward and the lady obligingly placed a silver medal around it. Grandma pride glowed once again and I felt all happy and proud and pleased with myself and life in general. She is 13-years-old and favors plaid shirts and blue jeans and is quite attached to her cell phone. I love her so much and I want to communicate with her like I’m a cool grandma that relates to teen talk because I’m all
hip and awesome. I pick her up from her music lesson and attempt to be that way, all hip and awesome. “Hey,” I say. “Hey,” she says back, texting an unknown someone on her phone. “So what’s new in your life,” I say, not ready to give up on being hip and awesome. “Nothin,” she said, barely raising her eyes. At that moment, I forget about being hip and awesome and resort to being all grandma like. “Emilie, you have 10 minutes to spend with your grandma,” I say. “Talk to me.” She sighs and puts her phone away and I am encouraged. She chats with me a little, telling me she
does like piano, but she is not good at it. “So, what’s new with your family?” I ask, thinking I am making inroads. “Nothin,” she said, looking pensive and slightly bored. “I wonder what car your mom will use to pick you up?” I venture finally. “Probably the red one,” she said. “We bought a new car yesterday.” “What?” I said. “Yeah,” she said, matter of factly. “It’s red.” “No kidding,” I say. “I love red.” “Yeah, me too,” she said and we smile at each other, pleased we have found a common ground. Grandchildren! Challenging, fun and completely wonderful, wherever they may be!
Thoughts on Trump and his impact on voters of the United States

was there. I was there, in the stands, yelling and saying stuff like, “oh my goodness, he has the puck, oh, oh, oh, he is shooting.” My daughter, mildly embarrassed, berated me gently, “mom, did you take your heart medication?” To say the least, it was exciting, this first game of the season. It was topped off with a visit to Tim Horton’s and finally a rousing political discussion, which lead to nowhere. However, we all felt smarter and wiser afterwards and decided we knew more than all the know-it-all people on Facebook, who apparently know everything. She is nine-years-old and her skating costume is electric blue, which, incidentally, is the same colour as her eyes. She is an amazing little skater. I picked her out, one of the many contestants vying for a medal at Arena A, which, as it so happened, was blocked by about two million people, who also had amazing little skaters out there competing in Arena A. “Excuse me, excuse me,” I said politely trying to
The first time I heard Donald Trump’s name was in a reference in a film plot. When I was younger, my stepfather and I were watching Die Hard with Vengeance, you know, the film that has Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson running around New York City trying to stop a bomb planting terrorist. I had to ask who Donald Trump was; I was thinking (at the time) that Trump was the bad guy in the movie, and I wanted to confirm my suspicions. My step-father
claimed that Trump was in fact a real person, was worth a lot of money, and was in possession of a terrible haircut. Since the beginning of the election south of the border, I developed a mental picture of Donald Trump as a political cartoon character, that had magically sprang free from the editorial section of a newspaper, that had won the lottery, and that had started doing whatever he wanted. Trump’s vociferous political rhetoric coupled with his absurd hair style creates a living breathing hate-filled cartoonish creation. It’s ironic in retrospect that I thought Trump was a Hollywood movie character. His recent and illogical rise to political fame in the
United States gives support to my cartoon perception of Trump. If you care to venture into the realm of the internet, a Google image search of Mr. Trump produces a pretty good laugh—especially when a photographer captures the wind lifting up Trump’s weird comb over. Sometimes I wish that Trump will magically get placed back into a comic strip where he belongs. Unfortunately, the power of his ludicrous political discourse is swaying the voters in his direction. He may have a good shot at becoming the next president of the United States. If recent history has taught us anything, the lesson should be that anything is possible. Dennis
Rodman, you know, the retired NBA player with brightly dyed hair, problems with drugs and alcohol, and former husband to Carmen Electra—yea, he has made more diplomatic progress with North Korea than the United Nations has. He also stared on Celebrity Apprentice, Trump’s reality television show. If Trump gets elected, I wonder what the odds are of Dennis Rodmen ending up as vice president. Rodman might help Trump re-establish American ties with the totalitarian regime of North Korea. A reader of this column may think that this would be better posted on some pop culture website, unfortunately Trump and Rodman are active politi-
cal components of a very real country—the United States. It seems to me that Hollywood, reality television, and their crazy celebrities have created a cartoon kaleidoscope that is shaping the outlook of a large mass of people. Rational discourse cannot provide a short answer to why a pair of cartoon characters have been so successful in their political endeavours (whether intentional or not). If Trump makes it into the oval office, he can vacation to Canada in a year or so and smoke a celebratory spliff on parliament hill (providing Trudeau gets his way). I’m going to finish off this written account of cartoon madness by borrowing the words of Porky Pig—That’s all Folks.

Rimbey town council highlights BY TREENA MIELKE Council committee
At its Jan. 25 meeting council appointed Bob Stevenson as chairman of the Rimbey Business Sector Sustainability Advisory Committee. Melivn Durand, Duane Adams, Gayle Rondeel, Jackie Stratton, Steffen Olsen, Steven Schrader and Tony Delster were appointed as committee members. The chairman and committee members were appointed last year and council agreed with administration’s’s recommendation that these individuals continue with these positions for 2016. Council changes banks Council agreed to change its banking service provider from ATB Financial to Servus
Credit Union. A request for proposal was sent to the ATB Financial and Servus Credit union. After careful review, adminstration decided Servus Credit Union offers the best value for the Town of Rimbey at this time. The town will enter into a 48-month contract with the Servus Credit Union. Subdivision approved Council agreed to approve an application from William Weenink to subdivide property located at 5022 56 Ave. The property contains a duplex and Weenink wanted to subdivide the property so the duplex could be sold separately. The property, designated low density general residential, complies with the land use bylaw which states du-

plex dwellings are a permitted use. Curling club lease Council agreed to a five-year lease with the curling club for the overall use of the curling rink, lounge and mezzanine between Oct. 1 to March 31 for scheduled events such as league play, bonspiels and other curling events. The agreement states mutual consent between the town and curling club must be given to host other activities in the facility on non-scheduled days during the season. The curling club’s liquor licence is only in effect when they have a scheduled curling event such as league play and bonspiels. The utilities have historically been paid for by the town for the curling club and that practice will continue. will now be transferred into the town’s name to secure a better rate in utility costs. Vision statement Council has agreed to adopt its vision statement which has been created to provide governance that fosters a progressive, evolving lifestyle. The decision came about after much
discussion at a Dec. 14, 2015 special council meeting. During the meeting council considered questions such as what needs to be changed, why should issues be addressed, what are the strengths of our assets, what is the desired end state and what would success look like? Meeting dates Council, at its annual organization meeting, had agreed regular
council meetings be held the second and fourth Mondays of the month. However as the AAMD & C Conference is Monday, March 14 to Wed., March 16, council agreed to move the scheduled regular council meeting from March 14 to March 7 to allow council to attend the meeting. Parking issues Pickup and drop off signs are helping with
traffic, however Rimbey peace officers have noted that residents are continuing to face the curb when parking heir vehicles. Peace officers have also noted that a considerable amount of vehicles are disobeying the signs at the school and parking their vehicles at an angle for several hours rather than the allocated 15 minutes which is displayed on the sign.

Our general leader is Mariann Valstar and assistant leader is Holly Waldron. Our beef leaders are Chris Simpson and Jason Valstar.
Our beef weigh-in was on October 18, 2015 at VJV Rimbey. There were a lot of nice looking calves. In beef we have 14 steers, four carcass, and six heifer projects. We would like to thank Wes Skeels for coming out and opening up everything for us. December 6, 2015 was Districts fun day at the Rimbey Bowling Alley. It was lots of fun. On December 21, 2015 the club helped out with making a lunch for the FCSS volunteers. While some people were making lunch there was some people helping with the food for the food bank and also helping with the toys for the food bank. Everyone had lots of fun. It’s great to be a part of the community. Later that afternoon we had a great time in Red Deer and had a friendly game of Lazer Tag. We had our farm tour on January 13, 2016. Everyone’s calves were looking great. So good luck on show day everyone! ub

What do the words Atonement and Vocation even mean and do they have any relevance to life in the 21st Century? Come explore some of the big questions of the Christian faith. Starting February 7, every Sunday morning in worship, we will be exploring a 13 week series “Doctrine isn’t Dusty”. It could get you thinking, and give you even better questions to be wondering about. Join us at 10:30 Sunday mornings at Rimbey United Church 4931 51st Avenue. Laura Smith, well known in the Canadian music scene, has received numerous awards and nominations. She is best known for her 1995 single, Shade of Your Love, a song which became one of the year’s biggest hits on adult contemporary radio stations in Canada. She is also well known for the song, ‘My Bonny,’ which is her own interpretation of the Scottish song, ‘My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean. Smith’s rendition of ‘My Bonny’ recorded with The Chieftains in 2010 was named Song of the Decade by LiveIreland. Smith has received two Juno nominations, a Gemini award for the televised performance she gave to honour Peter Gzowski at The Governor

She also received two East Coast Music Awards for her second project ‘B’tween the Earth and My Soul’ and several nomination for her recording, ‘It’s a Personal Thing.’ After a 10-year break from the music scene, Smith released ‘Everything is Moving’ on the Borealis label on April 23, 2013. The album is full of tunes from Smith’s own musical heritage and her voice is described as a warm but serious lived-in contralto full of strength, experience and emotion. Smith has lived in Cape Breton since 1984 and has performed in venues around the world as a singer, songwriter and actress. Bronwen Jones from the Beatty house said the

Annual Red Deer RV Exposition & Sale

Thursday, February 18th 10am – 6pm
Great savings, convenient indoor shopping and fun for the whole family can be found at the 40th annual Red Deer RV Show and Sale. The show runs Feb. 12th – 21st at Westerner Park – it’s the Ärst year since its inception that the show has run for 10 days. “The show Ärst started before the Westerner was here,” said Marty Vellner, chair of the Red Deer RV Show and Sale. “We used to run the show down in the arena and the Kinex building. “The show has always been run as a cooperative effort amongst the dealers as opposed to most other shows which are run by either a promoter or an association.” For the last number of years there have been two shows put on in Red Deer – the Red Deer RV Show and Sale and the Central Alberta RV Show and Sale. This year, both shows have been combined. The show and sale is presented by the six RV dealers in Red Deer including Woody’s RV World, Vellner Leisure Products, Go Uncle Ben’s RV and Marine Red Deer, Southside RV Centre, Allan Dale Trailers & RV’s and Western R.V. Country. Attendees to the show can visit the latest and greatest in RV models and technology all while indoors. In addition to a variety

of new RVs that will be on display, there will also be a number of booths, which will be showcasing RV accessories and all that comes with living the RV lifestyle. “The show features roughly 120,000 square-feet of brand new RV models in a comfortable indoor setting. We’ll have everything that the industry has to offer in terms of products. It will encompass motor homes of all types, diesel pushers, gas Class A & Class C motorhomes, Äfth wheels, travel trailers of all sizes & Toy Haulers. All of the innovations the industry has to offer will be on display. People can come and shop and compare, all under one roof,” said Vellner. “We’ll have about 200 new 2016 products and that is roughly $12 million in terms of value of product.” To accompany the RVs on display, there will be 30 exhibitors who are selling products, services and accessories complimentary to the RV lifestyle. Meanwhile, Vellner said now is the time to look at getting into the RV lifestyle. “Supply and demand is a fairly fundamental economic driver. Typically in the off-season, like we are now, the demand is lower, so there’s more motivation on the part of dealers to get product moving. The timing of these shows is geared to kicking off our season,” said
10am – 6pm
Vellner. “There’s always price increases coming into the selling season from the manufacturers. Typically the product that you can buy early in the season will be less money than what you would buy later in the season.” He added from a vacation opportunity the RV business is a lifestyle choice. “It offers more Åexibility and more creativity than any resort-type environment. It’s your house on wheels. It’s the most cost-effective way to take a family on a holiday,” said Vellner. “This type of lifestyle has always had an appeal with a section of the market. Where it’s gaining appeal is amongst young, overworked, busy people. The problem with the pace of life that we have now is that it separates families and doesn’t allow for family time. The types of things that can relieve that is the ‘get out and breathe the fresh air and sit around the Äre with your kids’ type thing. It keeps families in close quarters together and it builds bonds.” Hours for the Red Deer RV Show include Feb. 12th-13th from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Feb. 14th-18th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Feb. 19th-20th 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Feb. 21st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

RIMBEY REVIEW 11
Chamber in need of president BY TREENA MIELKE After five years at the helm of the Rimbey Chamber of Commerce, Jackie Stratton is steeping down, leaving a vacancy for the president’s spot. No one was willing to step up to the plate and take on the job when nominations were called during the chamber’s AGM held recently, although Chris Ransom, an employee with the Bank of Montreal, did agree to accept the position of vice president. Jennifer Robak, who owns The Jeweler Next Door, accepted the position of secretary. Executive director Carrie Vaartstra said Ransom may take on the position of president at a later date. Stratton will stay on as past president. She explained that the position of president involves attending round table events, being the official spokesperson for the chamber and helping to prepare the agenda for meetings in advance. “It’s not a scary job, it really isn’t,” she said. “And the board is there to support you.” Chamber members also talked about the trade show which is to be held April 22 and 23 in the arena. Vaarstra said about one
third of the 60 booths available for the trade show have already been spoken for. “We are only just starting and details are still be finalized,” she said. An RV dealership may be one of the businesses who take part in the trade show, she said. Face painting and a concession will most likely be available, she said. The chamber also agreed to help support the upcoming Pee Wee tournament by wearing jerseys on March 11, the official jersey day for the tournament. Members encourage everyone in the community to wear a jersey on that day.
Winners: The winners of the Zone 4 Alberta 55 plus Military Whist Challenge Cup held in Camrose January 30 are Reg Wright, Valrie Steinhauer, Sharon Wilson and Reg Wilson, all from Rimbey. BELL Bernice Claire Bell (nee Simmons) of Rimbey passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Area Two on Friday, January 29, 2016 at the age of 87 years. Bernice worked for many years for Alberta Transportation as a cook for bridge building crews around Central Alberta, and later for Husky Oil as a camp cook north of Slave Lake. Some may also remember her as a trained hairdresser working from her home in Eckville. Bernice was always an active member of her community; as a young wife, with the Mountview Ladies Club and Leedale Curling Club; and in her senior years, with the Eckville Chapter of the Royal Canadian Legion. She shared her love of camping and the outdoors with her grandchildren. Always a capable host in her home, family and visitors were treated to home-cooked meals and maybe a crib game or two. Bernice will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew her. Mourning Bernice’s loss are her three loving daughters: Jocelynn Bell (Greg Pedersen); Carlynn (Ian) Ratcliffe; and Audrey Bell and their families. She leaves behind eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; her sister, Jody Ramsay (Bob); and her brother, Carl; as well as several nieces and nephews, numerous other relatives, and many cherished friends. Bernice was predeceased by her parents, Ethel and Thomas Simmons; her first husband, Donald J. Bell; her long-time companion, Stuart Reitsma; and an infant son, Rodney. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Bernice’s Life was held at the Leedale Community Hall, Leedale on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Interment will be held at a later date in the Bradshaw Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Bernice’s Memory may be made directly to David Thompson Health Trust, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre - Long Term Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (davidthompsonhealthtrust.com). 18 RIMBEY REVIEW
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2016
Ponoka 4-H district news SUBMITTED Ponoka 4-H District is in full swing with lots of events and activities taking place. We have had our district fun day in Rimbey at Striker’s Alley on December 6 and attended Bull Congress in Camrose on January 23. We have had two public speaking workshops with Elizabeth George on December 19 and Jan 3, where we joined together with Lacombe

Countdown begins for Provincial tournament in Rimbey SUBMITTED With just over a month to go until the Canalta Peewee team hosts the Peewee C Provincial Hockey Championships in Rimbey, the host committee is busy with preparations. The committee’s pub night fundraiser at the Vault on January 29 was a success. They raised approximately $2,000 and would like to thank everyone who came out for their support. The team is continuing their bottle drive throughout the month of February so any donations are welcome and appreciated. The Canalta Peewees are also looking for donations of new, used, or broken sticks. Sticks can be dropped off with Riley Ryden at the Rimbey Junior Senior High School office. In conjunction with Rimbey Co-op, the team is selling Rimbey Co-op gift cards to help raise funds for the Provincials. The cards can be purchased in denominations of $50 or $100 and can be used at any retail Co-op location across Western Canada. Please contact Canalta Peewee families or call Pam Burchnall at 403505-4688 or Riley Ryden at 493-913-5224. This paper is
