FAMILY DAY FUN
SHERI REGNIER Trail Times

The Lawson family embodies what BC Family Day is all about. (From left) Simon, 8 months, Christina, 2, Jacob and Mary, enjoyed Monday’s mid-winter holiday, which offers families the chance to spend some extra time together. A day for fun time, like a stroll through Gyro Park and swinging in the playground, is an almost magical way to build connection and bring the whole family together.
Montrose native part of ‘The Revenant’ sound crew nominated for Oscar

“And the Oscar goes to…” Most wait for the moment the leading actors, best director and top film are announced during the golden Hollywood gala - but there’s also plenty of off-screen talent and Oscar-worthy accolade that goes into making an Academy Award winning movie. And this year, there’s a local connection. Montrose native Charlie O’Shea is part of a sound mixing trio up
for a golden statue in a few weeks. The Vancouver-based crew includes Salt Spring Island’s Chris Duesterdiek, the production sound mixer, and Candice Todesco, a sound assistant O’Shea has worked alongside since teaming up in the science fiction disaster film, “2012.” On Feb. 28, the long time boom operator will find out if he can add Academy Award winner to his list of achievements following six arduous months shooting “The Revenant” - Leo DiCaprio’s adventure thriller that leads the pack with 12 Oscar nominations.

Successful bargaining between Rossland and the city’s union led to the inking of a four-year contract last week. A two per cent wage increase each year, improvements in extended health benefits, bank time and contract language are included in the new agreement for 24 workers in CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) Local 2087. “I’d like to thank our bargaining committee for their hard work in reaching this deal,” said CUPE President, Jean Poole. “We had a productive and respectful round of bargaining and we look forward to serving residents and businesses in Rossland.” Rossland Mayor Kathy Moore said CUPE negotiations went smoothly. “The two negotiating teams did a great job representing their respective positions and yet kept the interests of the entire community at the forefront,” she added.“We have an
After 30 years of building his resume as a boom operator on movie and television sets, the 1981 J.L.Crowe grad, says from the onset, the sound team had an inkling “The Revenant” could produce the chance of a lifetime. He was recommended for the job because of his experience, but on top of that, O’Shea says there was also an element of luck involved. “All the stars aligned and we got on the right movie with the opportunity,” O’Shea told the Trail Times. “Everybody knew there was
exceptional group of dedicated city workers and this contract provides a fair compensation package for years to come.” The contract for Local 2087 composite locals serving Rossland, Warfield and Trail, expired Feb. 28 last year. The village settled this summer with a three-year agreement that includes a two per cent increase annually until 2018, and new contract language that defines seasonal lifeguards and other pool jobs as union positions. Approximately 50 union members in the City of Trail have been working without a contract for almost a year. Negotiations are continuing at this point, Trail Mayor Mike Martin confirmed Monday. “We are hopeful we can bring this to a conclusion in the near future,” he added. Local 2087 also encompasses Montrose and Fruitvale municipal workers, and those contracts end in 2017.
an opportunity for an Oscar with DiCaprio in the film and all the hubbub around it.” O’Shea knew if he could stick out the demanding project, the chance of being nominated for the hottest movie of the year was high, and worth every minute of 14-hour days standing in snow and freezing water to catch the perfect sound. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” he said. “With such a star, most people knew when they got on the movie, this might be DiCaprio’s opportunity to finally get an Oscar. Everyone is kind of riding on the coat tails of that.” O’Shea grew up around sound. His dad and namesake, Charlie O’Shea, owned the Radio Shack in downtown Trail. After high school graduation, he enrolled in a film program at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology). From there, the budding sound mixer moved into broadcasting at a TV station in Lethbridge. That was where O’Shea caught the movie bug. He was on set for the 1987 filming of “Betrayed,” a drama starring Debra Winger and Tom Berenger. From there, the rest is history. After working another two years sound mixing for an Edmonton TV station and training as a boom operator, O’Shea says the industry began heating up in Vancouver. A move to the coast brought post production opportunities in sound mixing and an eventual in to the IATSE Local 891, a union of artists, technicians, and craftspeople who work primarily in film and television production in B.C. “You just have to slowly build up your re-

ting in the way of the camera. “There are three of us on a movie who have to try and figure out how to get all the dialogue from the actors, as clearly as possible,” O’Shea explained. “So when it does go to post production, called the re-recording mixer, we give them the best sound possible given the situation we were in.” Long days in the remote Canadian wilderness (“The Revenant” was mainly shot outside of Calgary and in Squamish) and the unconventional manner of shooting presented some unique challenges for the boom operator. “We had minus-30 days and a lot of us had to be in hip waders for all those scenes that were shot in the water,” he said, mentioning long johns and downfilled jackets were a necessity. “We would get there in the morning and rehearse until the
light was right for the director of photography, which was in the evening before the sun went down.” After hours of practising with stand-ins each day, the final scenes were shot in a tight time frame. “When the director came to set we only had a certain amount of time, which was really stressful,” explained O’Shea. “For the crew to get everything the way he (Alejandro González Iñárritu, director) wanted it, we had maybe two hours. “A lot of work went into how to coordinate all the movement.” As award season nears and “The Revenant” buzz continues to rise, O’Shea has already moved on to his next venture. He’s back on set in Vancouver, working on the third installment of the “Planet of the Apes” movie series. “I’ve been hacking away at this for 30 years, so it’s a long time in-

vested in the business,” he said. “And it takes time to gain experience, it can’t be bought, you have to go out there and do it.” Though he won’t be in a tux or walking the red carpet at the Oscars, O’Shea is planning to fly to Los Angeles next week to mingle with peers at the Cinema Audio Society awards. And he has some advice for other small town kids looking to break into the industry. “I know when I grew up in Trail, Hollywood was a place a million miles away,” he said. “But now it’s an accessible place that people can be part of it whether you are working in Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal - there’s this great opportunity for young people to become animators, sound people or camera people. It’s another part of our province being diversified, and you can have a good career working in film.”

SCOOTING AROUND
CHRISTINA LAKE
Annual fire report highlights busy year CR AIG LINDSAY Grand Forks Gazette
Sheri Regnier photo
Blue skies and spring-like conditions dominated BC Family Day around Trail on Monday. The weather suited Taedon Lucht’s day off from Webster Elementary School perfectly, because dry roads meant the 12-year old could switch out his scooter skies and ride on wheels for the first time this year.
It was a busy year in 2015 for the Christina Lake Fire Rescue (CLFR) department. Between helping with the wildfires surrounding the area, training, attending structure fires as well as other emergencies, the fire department was indeed busy. The Christina Lake fire department operates under the authority of the RDKB and provides fire and emergency services to Christina Lake and Area “C”. Fire chief Ken Gresley-Jones said the department has a maximum ceiling membership of 26 and is currently operating at full capacity. The staff at the Lake consist of the fire chief and the local assistant fire commissioner, deputy fire chief and training officer, three fire captains, a safety officer, 20 firefighters (two of which are lieutenants as they are first responder instructors in that capacity) and a retired member acting as public relations and photographer. “At this time not all members are ‘first responders’ however, we have first responder training scheduled for the beginning of 2016 and recertifi-
cation training also for early 2016,” said Gresley-Jones. “We also have a team certified in spinal management, pediatric airway management, automatic electric defibrillator, swift water rescue and emergency child birth.” Gresley Jones added the fire training is ongoing. CLFR also continues to operate the “jaws of life” out of their new rescue unit and maintain a critical incident stree team on call for member on an ongoing basis. CLFR responded to 131 emergency calls in 2015 (up until Dec. 14). “There were four fire investiagtion reports submitted to the office of the fire commissioner,” said Gresley-Jones. “The remaining calls related to motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies and rescue operations.” Complaints to the fire commissioner (Gresley-Jones) were up for 11 to 79, all of which were resolved locally and without any enforcement action taking place. “We continue to have mutual aid agreements with Grand Forks and the Orient Washington Fire Service,” said Gresley-Jones. “We also work with provincial agreements with the provincial ambulance and forest service.”

CRANBROOK
Lack of volunteers, sponsors forces airshow cancellation BARRY COULTER Cranbrook Townsman
The Canadian Rockies International Airshow, which was scheduled for August 5 and 6 of this year, has been cancelled. The society formed to bring the event to Cranbrook — The Canadian Rockies International Airshow Society — made the announcement on its facebook page on the weekend. “The Airshow Society has received a lot of support and interest from both the general public and the many acts slated to perform at the show,” the notice read. “However there has been a minimal response to our requests for volunteers and interest in corporate sponsorship.” Society President Darrell Garton reiterated those reasons. “We put the brakes on with the show, due to the lack of volunteers and the lack of corporate sponsors. “We put it out there — I don’t know
how many times — looking for volunteers and sponsors, and we just weren’t able to come up with the manpower or the funds to put on the event.” The society even hosted a pre-event last summer. The Canadian Rockies International Airshow Society on Aug. 17 held a sneak peak of the future airshow, with some of the scheduled performers and their aircraft, including Stefan Trischuk and his Pitts X2C biplane, Geoff Latter and his 1958 Nanchang, a Chinese prop-driven fighter/trainer, and Super Dave Mathieson and his MX2, the world’s most advanced aerobatic aircraft. Things have changed since those halcyon days almost half a year ago. “A lot of it seemed to be the economic times and the state of the funds and the volunteers, unfortunately,” Garton said. “At this time, we’re going to dissolve the society. But I think they’re going to look at the event again for 2018. We’ve given notification to all our performers, and a
lot of them are going up to the Edmonton airshow.” The society’s release thanked all those who had been involved up to that point. “We would like to thank the individuals and organizations that did step forward as we tried to bring this event to fruition, and we hope that in the future, in a better economic climate we can come back and bring the City of Cranbrook and the Kootenay Region the Airshow that we had intended.” As recently as November, 2015, optimism was still running high. Thomas Murphy, one of the society’s directors, told Cranbrook City Council there had been a lot of success so far securing sponsorship on the local, regional and provincial levels. Murphy told Council it was estimated the event would “generate up to $1 million in revenue for local businesses and raise awareness of the East Kootenay region as a destination for travel and tourism.”

Protesters fear peace in B.C.’s forests

fter 20 years of representing B.C. coastal First Nations to negotiate what U.S.-directed activists labeled the Great Bear Rainforest agreement, a weary Dallas Smith expressed his relief and frustration. At a ceremony to sign the final agreement in Vancouver last week, Smith, president of the Nanwakolas Council of remote Central Coast communities like Bella Bella, joked that he’s finally out of a job. Then he got serious. “My communities still aren’t better places to live yet,” he said. But the land use agreement with the province and forest companies over a vast coastal area up to the Alaska border means the years ahead will be better. He said when he started it was like being caught in a divorce between the B.C. forest industry and international environmental groups. Dutch-based Greenpeace, its California offshoot ForestEthics and others moved on from their Clayoquot Sound battle to the B.C. coast, looking to continue the blockades against logging. “It’s the First Nations of the Coast who stood up and said ‘no, this is how it’s going to work’,”
Smith said. attack. ing their own B.C. agreement as inadequate, Greenpeace and ForestEthics have moved on to what they call the “boreal forest,” which we like to call northern Canada. The same bully tactics with forest products customers and producers have been featured. This time, a Quebec company that signed an accord in 2010 is suing Greenpeace for “defamation, malicious falsehood and intentional interference in economic relations.” Aboriginal companies on the B.C. coast will continue to log, including areas of old-growth forest and secondary growth. They will continue to export logs as economics dictate. They will continue to harvest animals, including grizzly bears. And, I expect, they will continue to be subjected to attempts to supervise and direct them by members of urban society’s new religion, environmentalism. The leaders of this movement don’t like peace. It’s bad for their business. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ kicking competition
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - “Kung Fu Panda 3” again led the box office over Super Bowl weekend, while the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” and the Jane Austen-monster mashup “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” followed distantly behind. DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda” sequel earned an estimated $21 million in its second weekend of release, according to studio estimates Sunday. Joel and Ethan Coen’s ‘50s Hollywood satire “Hail, Caesar!” opened in second place with an estimated $11.4 million for Universal Pictures. The two other major new releases struggled. The Nicholas Sparks’ romance “The Choice” debuted with $6.1 million for Lionsgate. Despite expectations of a no. 2 opening, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” eked out a meagre $5.2 million. The Walt Disney Co.’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” in its eighth week of release, celebrated a pair of milestones over the weekend. It surpassed $900 million at the North American box office and crossed $2 billion globally.

North Korea’s nuclear deterrent perfectly rational
H
ere we go again. North Korea launched a ballistic missile of intercontinental range on Sunday (saying it was just putting up a satellite) only weeks after it carried out its fourth nuclear weapons test (which it claimed was a hydrogen bomb). The United Nations Security Council strongly condemned it, and even the People’s Republic of China, North Korea’s only ally, expressed its “regret” at what the country had done. There will certainly now be more UN sanctions against Kim Jongun’s isolated regime. But there have already been four rounds of UN military and economic sanctions since North Korea’s first nuclear test in 2006, and Pyongyang just ignores them. Clearly, this is something that the North Korean regime wants so badly that it is willing to endure considerable punishment in order
to get it. But why is this very poor country spending vast sums in order to be able to strike its neighbours – and even the United States, for that is what the intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are about – with nuclear weapons?
GWYNNE
DYER World Affairs
Well, here’s a clue. What the North Korean government said after last month’s hydrogen bomb test was this: “The DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) is a genuine peace-loving state which has made every effort to protect peace on the Korean Peninsula and security in the region from the vicious US nuclear war scenario.”
“The US is a gang of cruel robbers that has worked hard to bring even a nuclear disaster to the DPRK....By succeeding in the H-bomb test...the DPRK proudly joined the advanced ranks of nuclear weapons states...and the Korean people demonstrated the spirit of a dignified nation equipped with the most powerful nuclear deterrent.” Never mind the stilted rhetoric and gutter abuse; North Korean propagandists always talk like that. Listen to the key words that are almost buried under the surrounding invective. North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme, they say, is meant to “protect...the region from...the US ...nuclear war scenario” by creating a “most powerful nuclear deterrent.” Really? Do they actually fear that the United States might use nuclear weapons on them, and that they can only be safe if they have their own hydrogen bombs
and ICBMs? Are they doing all this purely as a defensive measure? Of course they are. However bad-tempered and impulsive they sounded, the men of the Kim family, father, son and grandson, who have ruled North Korea in dynastic succession for the past 68 years were not crazy. They never started a war, because they knew they would lose it, and the current incumbent is certainly not going to start a nuclear war. He would have to be crazy to do that. North Korea lacks the resources to build more than a few bombs a year, and it does not have the technologies to ensure that the missiles it may one day have won’t get shot down. It will probably never be able to guarantee that it can strike even South Korea or Japan with nuclear missiles, let alone the United States. Everybody in the North Korean hierarchy (along with some
Canada should heed plea to educate Syrian refugees
An editorial from the Toronto Star Even as it’s being criticized for its decision to pull out of the bombing campaign in Syria and Iraq, Canada can be proud of its humanitarian response to the crisis in Syria. A new report from the international aid organization Oxfam singles out Canada for giving generously to help people in Syria -- as well as the country’s 4 million refugees living in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon. In fact, according to Oxfam’s own calculations based on international appeals for Syrian aid and the wealth of countries, Canada met 98 per cent of its “fair share” of humanitarian funding for the region in 2015, making it one of the top five most generous countries. Even more impressively, it met 238 per cent of its fair share of refugee intakes with its target for 2016 of 36,300. Many other rich countries have fallen far short in their emergency relief donations -- so far that only half of the internationally agreed target of $8.9 billion needed to help Syrians was met in 2015. Russia, to single
out just one notable laggard, has coughed up only 1 per cent of what Oxfam regards as its fair share. Millions have been left cold and hungry as the conflict approaches its fifth year. Still, there’s something else Canada can do to help ease the crisis. It can respond to Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai’s plea for Canada to donate $33 million towards a $1.4-billion (U.S.) fund to educate Syrian refugee children. The appeal by the Pakistani education activist fits well with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s goal of pulling out of the bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria and refocusing Canada’s efforts on training local forces and humanitarian support in the region. As Yousafzai notes, it’s not just military action that’s needed to resolve the Syrian crisis. “It’s also investing in peace and the future. If you want to rebuild the country, you need to educate the children.” And if the Trudeau government is looking for causes to support in the region, education should be among its top priorities. The World Bank has long noted that countries where
girls, as well as boys, are educated have faster-growing economies, less government corruption and healthier populations. Yet because of the crisis in humanitarian funding for Syrian refugees there is a severe lack of school spaces. As Oxfam points out, many can’t afford to send their children to school even when there is space. They need every cent they can summon, including any money their children can bring in, for food and fuel. As a result, the numbers of Syrian refugee children out of school in the region is a staggering 700,000. “How can you think of any future for a country that has 700,000 children out of school?” Yousafzai rightly asks. Her appeal for an education fund is timely. It comes as a conference of rich nations aimed at supporting Syria opened in London on Thursday. Canada, represented by International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, can set an example there by continuing to commit to its fair share of aid and by supporting Yousafzai’s plea for an education fund.
millions of other North Koreans) would certainly be dead only hours after the regime launched nuclear weapons at any of those countries. The United States has literally thousands of nuclear weapons. It would take only a few dozen quite small ones to virtually exterminate the entire ruling elite, and North Korea would have no way of stopping them. A few not-very-hightech nuclear weapons would give Pyongyang no usable ability to launch a nuclear attack against the United States or its allies. They would, however, give it a pretty credible nuclear deterrent. Launching a few nuclear weapons against a major nuclear power is suicidal, but those same few weapons can be a
perfectly good deterrent against a nuclear attack by that same power, because they give the weaker party a capacity for “revenge from the grave.” Even a country as powerful as the United States will behave very cautiously when faced with the possibility that an opponent might land even one or two nuclear weapons on its territory. North Korea has lived under the implicit threat of US nuclear weapons for almost seven decades, and the United States has never promised not to use its those weapons against it. It’s almost surprising that we haven’t seen North Korean nuclear weapons before now. North Korea is just doing the same thing that Pakistan did in
M Q
the 1980s and 90s out of fear of Indian nuclear weapons, and that Iran was doing in fear of both Pakistani and Israeli nuclear weapons in the last 15 years. The Security Council is quite right to try to block North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme, and the successful use of international sanctions to stop Iran offers some hope that it may succeed. But North Korea is not a crazy state plotting a nuclear holocaust at the cost of its own extinction. Its nuclear weapons programme is a perfectly rational – although highly undesirable – policy for a small country with a big problem. Kootenay’s top teams serve up playoff appetizer KIJHL division leaders square off as Kimberley edges Beaver Valley in double overtime GUY BERTR AND Trail Times
With less than a month left in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League regular season, the top two teams in the Kootenay Conference served up a perfect playoff appetizer Saturday night in Fruitvale. In a game that featured big hits, big goals and big saves it came down to an untimely mistake by the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and an opportunistic goal by the Kimberley Dynamiters as they headed back to the East Kootenay with a 4-3 double overtime win. Kimberley’s Sawyer Hunt scored twice including the game winner with two minutes gone in the three-on-three sudden death period to give the Kootenay Conference-leading Dynamiters its league-leading 36th win. Hunt, who also opened the scoring Saturday night, knocked a clearing attempt by Nitehawks goaltender Tallon Kramer out of mid-air and quickly snapped it by the Beaver Valley netminder to stun the big crowd in Fruitvale. It was a tough way to end a game dominated by great goaltending at both ends of the rink by

Beaver Valley’s Braden Fuller scored twice on Saturday, including this quick shot early in the second period, but Kimberley Dynamiters goaltender Tyson Brouwer won the battle as he stopped 50 shots in a 4-3 double overtime win in Fruitvale. It stayed that way until Kimberley wasted little time cashing in on a power play with Jared Marchi finishing off a perfect cross-ice pass leaving Kramer little chance to prevent the tying goal with 11:46 to play. Jones pointed to that goal, and his team’s inability to capitalize on its power play chances, as the difference in the game. Neverthelss, Beaver Valley had the best opportunities in the overtime including a great chance by Fuller, who was looking for the hat trick goal, but the Hawks couldn’t beat Brouwer to pull out the victory. “We’re lucky to have Tyson Brouwer back there,” said Garrels. “He’s a big game goalie and he showed it tonight.” Jones wasn’t going to let one miscue by his goaltender spoil an otherwise strong performance by his club. “If we play every game from here on in like that we’ll be doing pretty good.” The Nitehawks have six more games left in the regular season including three at home. They’re right back on home ice tonight when the Nelson Leafs come to town.
Warriors complete sweep of Smokies TIMES STAFF The Trail Smoke Eaters will be relieved to know they don’t have to face the West Kelowna Warriors anymore in the regular season. The Warriors concluded its season-long dominance over the Smokies by sweeping back-to-back games at the Cominco Arena on the weekend. Friday night’s 9-0 rout and Saturday’s 4-1 win gave West Kelowna a perfect 7-0 record in matchups against Trail this season and they did it in convincing fashion outscoring the Smokies 49-13 in those games. That pattern held true on the
weekend as the Warriors steamrolled the Smokies Friday. West Kelowna broke open a 1-0 game with three goals in the first four minutes of the middle frame to chase Trail starting goalie Bailey MacBurnie. Linden Marshall didn’t fare much better in relief as the Warriors put another five pucks behind him as West Kelowna solidified its hold on second spot in the Interior Conference. Saturday saw a better effort from the home team but that didn’t derail the Warriors bid for the season sweep. Garrett Forster scored twice in the first period to give the visitors the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Down 3-0, Trail finally gave the home fans reason to cheer when Nolan Redler replied for the Smokies just seven seconds after going down by three. That’s as close as it got as Jonathan Desbiens potted his second of the game for the Warriors in the third to seal the win. The Smokies sit five points out of a playoff spot behind Vernon, which holds two games in hand. Any last-gasp push for the final spot will need to come soon. Trail has only six games left on the 201516 calendar including the first of three against Salmon Arm tonight in the North Okanagan city. Trail’s next home game is Feb. 19 when Merritt comes to town.

SPORTS SUPER BOWL
As ugly as it was, it was beautiful for Manning THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A pack of Denver Broncos had just chased a beleaguered Cam Newton around his own end zone one more time, and Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera had seen enough. With 2:08 left in one of the ugliest Super Bowls ever, he threw in the towel. Actually, Rivera ordered a punt on fourth down. No reason to give Denver another easy score that would make future sports historians think this game was somehow worth watching. Super Bowl 50 was supposed to be a celebration of all things great about the NFL - focusing on the old star Peyton Manning and Newton, the exciting face of the future. But the only thing to celebrate at the end was a vicious Denver defence that made enough big plays to set up Manning for the second Super Bowl ring he so coveted in what was likely the final game of his career. At least let’s hope it was the final game of his career. It would be hard to watch him take the field again after a performance that exposed him as an aging quarterback hanging on for one final moment of glory. Manning wasn’t terrible, but for a lot of the game he was simply awful. If not for a late gift from the Panthers, Denver would have

They harassed Newton on every snap, hitting him 10 times and sacking him six times. They kept getting the ball back, even if Manning and the offence didn’t seem to know what to do when they got it.

They gave the Broncos their third Super Bowl win, and first in 17 years, despite the most anemic performance by an offence of any of the 49 Super Bowl winners before them. “This game was like this season has been,” Manning said. “It tested our toughness, our resilience, and our unselfishness. It’s only fitting it turned out that way. A great bunch of teammates, a great bunch of guys to play with. I feel very, very grateful.”

The tone for this one was set early when Miller hit Newton inside the 5-yard-line, then stripped the ball from his arms for good measure. Defensive end Malik Jackson fell on it in the end zone and Denver had a 10-0 lead it would never give up. That play might have never happened if the officials weren’t having a bad night of their own. They couldn’t wait to toss flags when players jawed at each other, and they still can’t figure out what a catch is as evidenced by the unsuccessful challenge two plays earlier of a catch by Jerricho Cotchery that wasn’t. Miller would chase Newton all night in an MVP performance that played out pretty much the way Phillips drew it up. The defensive wizard was brought in by Denver coach Gary Kubiak, who was himself brought in by John Elway, to instil toughness in the Broncos in the wake of playoff disappointments that included a 48-3 loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl two years ago. Mission accomplished. Carolina led the league with 500 points but was held to its fewest of the year, and Denver set an ignominious mark with 194 yards gained, the fewest for a Super Bowl winner. So what: The Broncos are champions, and Manning is the first quarterback to win Super Bowls with two franchises; Indianapolis in 2007 was the other. Kubiak is the first to win a Super Bowl as player and coach for the same team. Denver’s top-ranked defence, the one that hit Tom Brady 20 times in the AFC Championship, simply wouldn’t let Newton get in
a rhythm, never gave him an opportunity to break out into a Dab. “It was nothing special that they did,” Newton said in the most expansive of his brief postgame comments. “We dropped balls. We turned the ball over. We gave up sacks. We threw errant passes. That’s it.” That was about it, though there was incompetence aplenty from both offences. But for the curious who wanted to watch the $5 million ads between the non-action, millions would have turned this one off before Coldplay and celebrity guests trotted out for a halftime show that paid homage to shows of the past. The greatest passer in the history of the NFL struggled to complete the most basic throws. Manning completed only 13 passes for 141 yards, threw an interception and lost a fumble. But he managed to hold the Super Bowl trophy upright as he celebrated with teammates in the one he wanted most. “He didn’t have to go out there and do it all on his own, and he knew that,” Kubiak said. Manning wouldn’t commit to retirement after the game, saying he got good advice from former coach Tony Dungy to never make a decision in the heat of the moment. But it’s hard to think that he would come back at the age of 40 to go through the rigours of another season. Not when he’s now tied with brother Eli with two Super Bowl victories each. Yes, the game was ugly. But for Manning and the Broncos, the result was simply beautiful.

PEOPLE Stompin’ Tom celebration brings fresh attention to Canadian musical legend
THE C ANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Celebrating Stompin’ Tom Connors’ legacy is starting to take on a life of its own. Marking what would have been his 80th birthday on Tuesday, a band of longtime friends - including Canada’s former governor general Adrienne Clarkson - will strum their way through Connors’ most memorable tracks for their third annual tribute concert. The event, which takes place at the folk music venue Hugh’s Room in Toronto, is one they hope will help elevate Stompin’ Tom’s reputation as the writer of Canada’s cultural songbook. “If he was around he’d still be singin’ and stompin’,” says Clarkson, taking a break from a recent rehearsal. “It’s the people who love Stompin’ Tom, and people who would come in from all over the place ... to hear him while he was playing. That’s what we’re trying to replicate - something he would be doing.” Three years after his death, the man known for “Bud the Spud,” “The Hockey Song” and “Sudbury Saturday Night” still has many adoring fans. Clarkson, who counts herself among them, met the singer when she was a CBC producer. The two immediately clicked
when they realized their birthdays were only a day apart - hers is on Feb. 10. “He was completely timeless and ageless,” she says. “It was a shock when he was dying.” Clarkson, who turns 77 Wednesday, took the stage last year alongside the Whiskey Jack band to pay homage to the singer. The performance went over well, which convinced her to make another appearance this year. Whiskey Jack’s history with Stompin’ Tom runs much deeper. The seven-piece bluegrass and country band worked with Stompin’ Tom on his 1993 album “Dr. Stompin’ Tom, Eh?” which sparked a collaborative friendship that spanned two decades. “We saw ourselves as kind of the house band,” says Duncan Fremlin, co-founder of Whiskey Jack and one of the organizers of the tribute show. “Over the years if he needed a band to play at his barbecue or birthday parties, or whatever, he’d call me and say, ‘Can you bring the boys up?’ So, of course we did - we loved to do that.” When Stompin’ Tom died of kidney failure those “good, ol’-fashion Maritime kitchen parties” he hosted began to fade away.
“We realized we weren’t going to get called up to the birthday party anymore, so we said, ‘Why don’t we host our own?”’ Fremlin remembers. The tributes were an instant success, he says, attracting Canadian performers like comedian Sean Cullen and Tragically Hip guitarist Paul Langlois who both tipped their hat to Stompin’ Tom with special appearances. This year, Fremlin promises another big Canadian performer will hit the stage as a surprise guest. Clarkson hopes she too will be a part of future Stompin’ Tom festivities, which she sees as growing in size each year. “Certainly we hope there will be bigger ones when he’s 85,” she says. Fremlin has an even more ambitious plan. He hopes Canadians eventually celebrate a Stompin’ Tom Day just like they do for Scottish poet Robbie Burns. “Robbie Burns is associated with Scotch, haggis and ‘Auld Lang Syne.’ Well, I want Stompin’ Tom to be associated with ‘Bud the Spud,’ ‘Sudbury Saturday Night,’ and room-temperature beer and potatoes,” Fremlin says. “He’s going to be deified in the Canadian music establishment over time. I’m seeing it happen now.”
STOMPIN’ ON: ADRIENNE CLARKSON ON STOMPIN’ TOM’S LEGACY
Adrienne Clarkson considers herself one of Stompin’ Tom Connors’ biggest fans. Ahead of her performance Tuesday at Stompin’ Tom’s 80th Birthday Celebration in Toronto, Canada’s former governor general spoke with The Canadian Press about paying tribute to the Stompin’ legend, as well as a few of her favourite tunes. - On how Stompin’ Tom became one of Canada’s musical icons: “He was totally authentic and I think that cuts across whether you like country music or classical.... His music is timeless and will always be something that people respond to.” - On why she loves “The Hockey Song”: “The moment you hear ‘The Hockey Song’ you feel the ice on your cheeks.” - On the Stompin’ Tom statue unveiled in Sudbury last summer: “Even if there’s a little lull 100 years (from now) and people don’t know who he is, somebody (will see the statue), ask ‘Who is that?’ They’ll find (his music) again. So a statue is really, really important.”

THE C ANADIAN PRESS “Letterkenny” may be the most Canadian TV comedy ever made. Coming soon to The Comedy Network, the series was conceived by a bunch of guys who play hockey together. It all began after a game, over beers. That one of those guys happens to be Jared Keeso helped. Keeso is one of the stars of Bravo’s “19-2,” the Montreal-based cop series entering a third season. He also played a young Don Cherry in a couple of CBC TV-movies about the colourful “Coach’s Corner” star. The Canadian Screen Award winner is originally from Listowel, a farming town of about 7,000 residents in southwestern Ontario. “Letterkenny” (a name plucked from a map of Ireland) is basically Listowel cranked up a notch. Keeso was having beers with his buddy Nathan Dales after a game in their Vancouver recreational league. They bonded over their love of the Calgary Flames. Keeso and Dales eventually started working on several web series ideas, short comedy sketches goofing on sports fans. “We were riffin’ on text messages based on that Flames thing,” says Dales. “Things just started snowballing.” Videos were posted on YouTube, but it wasn’t until Keeso suggested another idea - based on the peculiar way he and his buddies would speak back in Listowel - that things really started taking off. Their “Letterkenny Problems” YouTube videos soon had more than 10 million views. The web videos show Keeso and Dales basically mouthing off as characters Wayne and Daryl. It’s all based on “chirping,” the deadpan put-downs dudes from small-town southwestern Ontario string together. These zingers are part of their farmland DNA. One of the less profane examples: “Buddy, you’re softer than a Tootsie Roll fruit cup.” Keeso says it was the language of his youth. “You’ve heard that dude who talks like that for CONTINUED ON A12

TV LISTINGS
YouTube hits draws interest from TV CONTINUED FROM A11 some reason,” he says. “His sister doesn’t talk like that. His mom doesn’t talk like that. Maybe his dad does.” When Keeso started hearing hockey buddies in Vancouver chirping the same way, he realized the language may be universal. Through Facebook and Twitter, he started receiving messages from fans in North Dakota and Minnesota saying, “This could be here.” Keeso started keeping his iPhone handy to record kooky phrases. “I take gems from just about everywhere,” he says. “The thing about small-town charm is people don’t know how much gold they’re packing there. People just toss out things (that) take me to my knees sometimes.” The large number of YouTube hits for “Letterkenny Problems” drew interest from TV production companies. Some big players were in the hunt, but after a conversation with co-founders Mark Montefiore and Patrick O’Sullivan, Keeso and Dales settled on newly formed New Metric Media. The immediate challenge was turning four- or five-minute webisodes into half-hour TV comedies. Montreal-born writer-director Jacob Tierney was brought in to flesh out scripts. Keeso insists story arcs and character development “just gives me a headache.” The producers say he is being modest. “Jared had put together a little pitch doc that outlines what the characters and the world might be,” says O’Sullivan. “He’s such a smart guy. We knew this could be a TV show.” Characters in the town are divided into Hicks, Skids and Hockey Players. Two other characters - young hockey dudes Wayne and Daryl are always chirping at - are played by Dylan Playfair (“Some Assembly Required”) and Andrew Herr (“Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story”). The actors also play hockey with Keeso and Dales in that Vancouver beer league. Just to make sure it was as Canadian - and as small town (that is, not Toronto) - as possible, the series was shot in Sudbury, Ont. So, yes, “Letterkenny” is as Canadian as beer smuggled into a skating rink. “That’s what beer league’s all about,” says Keeso. “It’s not really about the hockey; it’s just about the beers after and the room. We’ll have some stories for the boys after, that’s for sure.” By Dave Green

Dear Annie: I am the youngest sister of 10 siblings. Over the years, five siblings have died. You’d think we would try to be closer after such awful losses. So when does the bullying stop? I have tried to be an upstanding sister and aunt, but no matter how much I contribute my money, time and empathy, they think it’s OK to belittle me and encourage their kids and friends to do the same. I never talk trash about my sisters. Actually, I speak very highly of them in front of and behind their backs. They do not return the favor. I’ve put up with the “little sister syndrome” for decades and am quite tired of it. It’s worse when they get their friends to gang up on me. At last year’s Christmas party, my sister’s best friend said I was the “screw up” of the family in front of everyone and not one person stood up for me. My sister’s mother-in-law snickered at some other nasty comment someone made about me. I have decided to limit my con-

LOCAL ENDLESS VIEW
Guy Bertrand photo
There aren’t too many vantage points were a photographer is able to get both Rossland and Trail in the same photograph. However, this weekend shot, from the top of Grey Mountain, shows part of Rossland (just beyond Red Mountain on the right) and Trail in the valley below (on the left).
