VIEWS Teens and marijuana: sorting the information
by Dean Nicholson, Executive Director, East Kootenay Addiction Services Society Here is the title of a research article published in the January edition of the journal Cerebral Cortex by researchers at Western University: Adolescent Cannabinoid Exposure Induces a Persistent Sub-Cortical Hyper-
Dopaminergic State and Associated Molecular Adaptations in the Prefrontal Cortex. Now, if you’re like me and never read the journal, Cerebral Cortex, this title probably sounds like a strange foreign language. In fact, I’m showing this as an example of the kind of research that it is trying to determine the potential positive and negative effects of
marijuana use on teen brains. As the Canadian government moves towards legalizing marijuana one of the big concerns is going to be the potential impact on adolescents. Both the previous Conservative government and the current Liberal government said they wanted to limit teens’ access to marijuana and protect them from marijuana’s risks. The two governments had very different ideas about how this could be done, but that’s the topic for a different discussion.
What is important to realize is that quality research on the risks and/ or benefits of marijuana use is relatively scarce, and the research that is being done that helps to shed some light on how marijuana may affect teens tends to be published in obscure specialist journals with intimidating titles like the one above. Most people don’t access this kind of information. What people might find when they look for information is sites on the Web, YouTube or Blogs. Some of these sites may
be very good and based in good research, while many are little more than personal opinion sites masquerading as expert testimony. For the average person it can be very difficult to sort through. At East Kootenay Addiction Services we routinely hear teens talking about a website they found which says marijuana is perfectly safe, while concerned parents talk about a site they found which says marijuana is the worst drug ever used. ‘Seek and ye shall find’ could
be the catch phrase for the Web, as you are bound to find a site that will affirm your beliefs. So how to sort through all of this? On our EKASS website we provide links to Canadian and International websites that we believe provide the best balanced information on substances and substance use. Check these sites out as a good starting place for more accurate information. As for the study I mentioned above –it found that giving heavy doses of marijuana
to young rats created lasting behaviour and brain changes which resembled those found in people with schizophrenia. They did not find these changes in adult rats exposed to marijuana. The implication being that heavy marijuana use in teens may cause more significant damage than in adults (at least if you’re a rat). In the next article I’ll talk more about some of the research findings of the potential impact on teens of marijuana use. Stay tuned.

This year’s Starlite Campaign has raised more than $100,000 over its original goal of $150,000. EKFH’s 8th annual Starlite Campaign has come to a close with a remarkable outcome of $266,670 in donations. The campaign’s goal was to raise $150,000 and to light 17 large stars and 24 small stars atop the East Kootenay Regional Hospital roofline. This year’s campaign is focused toward raising funds for regional and community health care programs dedicated to helping those with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory needs, and other health
conditions. These programs also help those who may require assistance with chronic disease management, home nursing, in-home oxygen, wound, senior, pediatric and self-care. Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director, “The outpouring of support across the East Kootenay and from other funding organizations in BC has been significant for this year’s Starlite Campaign. It is incredibly gratifying to see that this annual fundraiser is garnering support
from every community which ultimately benefits hospitals and health care facilities and programs in the region.” Since the November 26, 2015 campaign launch the foundation has released funding confirmations to purchase many items such as oxygen oximeters, aerochambers, vital signs monitors, tympanic ear thermometers, palliative care & acute slider sheets, blood pressure monitors, colonoscopes, cardiology stethoscopes, and much more. And then there are those who, year after year, are filled with anxiety about what to give their beloved when February 14 rolls around yet again. There’s no need to panic. You can show your love for your partner without going to a lot of trouble, or even to a lot of expense. Some gifts are always appropriate. Here are 10 classics that have proven themselves as worthy over the years. 1. A bouquet of her favourite flowers. 2. Some good quality chocolates (resist the temptation of sampling some and enjoy them together!). 3. A piece of jewellery that you’ll know she’ll like and that suits her lifestyle. 4. The perfume she loves so much (or give her some samples, then buy her the one she likes best). 5. A romantic dinner at home or at a res taurant, but without the children. 6. A special outing together to a musical, play, comedy, dance, or opera. 7. A relaxing day for two at a spa.
8. Lingerie (shop together so she can choose lingerie she feels good in). 9. A basket containing everything you need for a loving interlude together: massage oil, romantic music, aphrodisiac foods, and candles.
10. A glamour session with a profes sional photographer. For maximum effect (and romance), feel free to personalize your gift by attaching a heartfelt note. Happy Valentine’s Day!

2016 KIA Sportage Overall: Kia’s compact tall wagon possesses a cleanly executed design that copies from no other class competitor; an allnew Sportage is scheduled for a 2017-model-year release. Drivetrain: Base 2.4-litre fourcylinder delivers 182 horsepower; optional turbocharged four-cylinder is worth 260 horsepower; available four-wheel-drive system can lock up the front and rear axles for improved rough- or offroad agility. The Sportage excels in a
neighbourhood of tough competitors, led by the ever-popular Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. Credit its good looks and gutsy turbo engine option for maintaining a steady following. The perceptibly quiet cabin is also certainly appreciated by its passengers. For drivers, a selector varies the stiffness and “feel” of the steering depending on the level of feedback desired. The base powerplant is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that creates 182 peak horsepower and

177 pound-feet of torque. The optional turbocharged fourcylinder has an output of 260 horsepower 269 pound-feet. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.4, while automatic is optional, but standard with the 2.0 turbo. The Sportage is a front-driver by nature, while the optional all-wheel-drive system, which is available for both engines, directs 100 per cent of engine torque to the front wheels until tire slip is detected. At that point, the required power
is instantly deployed to the rear wheels. Additionally, a manually selected “Lock Mode” allows for a fixed 50:50 front:rear torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction is required. Of the five trim levels, the top-line SX Luxury has unique body pieces and wheels and more supportive seats. An upgraded Infinitybrand audio system, panorama roof and push-button start are all optional, as are heated and cooled front seats.

cise for us and it’s information that we will now take forward to the national roundtable coming up later in February in Winnipeg, as well as to B.C.’s input towards the national inquiry for missing and murdered indigenous women.” Also attending were Justice Minister Suzanne Anton and Public Safety Minister Mike Morris, who served as North District Superintendent for the RCMP before being elected MLA for Prince George-Mackenzie in 2013. Relations with police and domestic violence were among the most sensitive issues discussed. “There were a lot of challenges that were raised in working with the RCMP in terms of some of the follow-up and other components, and so we have a lot of follow-up work to do with the families as well as with police in general,” Rustad said. On domestic violence in aboriginal communities, he referred to the annual Gathering of Men organized by Paul Lacerte, executive director of the B.C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres. It distributes symbolic moose hide patches. “Women are bearing the burden of abuse, but they also have to bear the burden of advocacy to affect change, and this is a man’s problem as much as it is a woman’s problem,” Lacerte said at last year’s Valentine’s Day rally at the B.C. legislature. “Violence towards women and children has never been a part of our culture.” Lacerte said across Canada, aboriginal women aged 15 and older are three times more likely to experience violence and be assaulted by their partners than non-aboriginal women.

Officials, public on hand as Elko launches its new fire service
There were cheers and applause Saturday afternoon as the new Elko Fire Service was officially launched. “As a person who spent over 20 years as a firefighter, I personally know the value of this new service to the community and the incredible dedication of the men and women who have signed on as firefighters,” says RDEK Electoral Area B Director Stan Doehle. “From Shayne Webster and the community champions who first approached the RDEK several years ago about establishing a fire service, to RDEK Staff, former Area B Director Heath Slee and others, it has taken many hands and hundreds of hours to bring the Elko Fire Ser-

Rescue Service Fire Chief Dave Boreen says the project team has been working on Elko Fire since 2011. “We overcame several hurdles and we found more efficient ways to bring this very important service to the residents of Elko,” says Boreen. “The final approvals for this service came in April of 2015 and since then, we have purchased the necessary equipment to operate the fire department, renovated the school basement to house our administration and training room,
and most importantly, we’ve trained local residents to become firefighters. These firefighters are the backbone of this department.” Boreen also acknowledged Canfor for its continued support and the donation of lumber to construct the fire hall, and BC Hydro for the grant that was used to purchase firefighting equipment. Adults and youth participating in the Community Directed Youth Funds program attended a conference-style event where they were inspired and educated to take action in their communities. The Trust’s support of youth will increase through the Basin Youth Network. ed $4.65 million over three years—$1.55 million annually—to the network. It will build on and incorporate the Trust’s successful Community Directed Youth Funds program. Since 2011, this program has supported communities’ needs to keeping youth active and engaged. The Stoke Youth Network in Revelstoke is one of many successful examples. “We are really excited about the new structure,” said Megan Shandro Revelstoke’s Youth Liaison. “It aligns with what we are already doing; it allows us to identify local priorities and act on them. We were one of the first communities to access the Trust’s community-directed youth funds, and we’ve seen tremendous benefits with bringing together community stakeholders and increased collaboration. I know that others joining the network will see success because of this approach too.” Many communities have already received Trust support to create community youth networks or groups, while
others may now receive support to establish them. These groups will then be able to receive help from the umbrella Basin Youth Network to deliver programs based on community priorities—plus have a mechanism to collaborate with each other. The Trust will lead the network by developing programs, hosting youth-focused events and hiring a regional coordinator. Collaborating is something Lori McNeill, Executive Director of the Cranbrook Boys and Girls Club, looks forward to. “Learning from other youth centres, talking about their ideas and trying them out, is so valuable to providing youth with diverse opportunities. I am also excited to team up with community partners in Cranbrook to build stronger programs that better serve the youth community.” Shannon Isaac, Youth Coordinator at North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society thinks the network is a great idea. “Having a key point of contact in the community who can communicate
with and bring local organizations together, incorporate input from the various groups and oversee youth programming has been key for Kaslo and Area D. It’s been incredibly collaborative, and the youth programming has been enhanced because of this. We look forward to building on this as part of the network.” The network will also support emerging needs, such job readiness, work experience programming, youth leadership, and others as identified. To learn more about your community’s involvement in the network, contact Michelle d’Entremont 1.800.505.8998 or mdentremont@cbt.org. College to unveil new branding strategy
PHOTO SUBMITTED
The College of the Rockies recently contracted a Calgary firm to create a new brand identity. The logo has been released and the rest of the strategy will be finalized by the end of the month. At College of the Rockies’ 40th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, February 2, President and CEO David Walls unveiled a portion of the College’s new brand identity - a new logo. “We recently concluded a year-long strategic planning initiative and through that process it was determined that a new branding strategy was a logical step,” explains Walls. A Request for Propos-
als (RFP) was issued in May 2015 to find a company to lead the rebranding. Strut Creative out of Calgary, Alberta was granted the contract in August. The rebrand, which will be rolled out slowly before being fully adopted for the start of the fall semester in September, is meant to reflect the College’s brand promise - Rocky Mountain Inspired, Small College Proud - and to strengthen and modernize how

the College represents itself to the communities it serves. As part of the rebranding initiative, Strut has developed a fresh look for the College, including the new logo unveiled at the 40th Anniversary celebration. “This is a brave departure from where we were,” says Walls. “The continuous flowing shape of our new logo signifies life-long learning, a continuous journey, sustain-
ability and opportunity and speaks to our being adaptive, responsive and approachable. The new look also pays tribute to our place in the Rockies without giving the sense that the mountains are the only thing that we’re about.” The logo is the first step in the overall brand strategy which will be finalized by the end of February. The public will likely see both logos in use for several months as current stocks
of branded materials are depleted before a full transition to the new look takes place in September. “The rebranding is the largest overhaul of the image since we moved from East Kootenay Community College to College of the Rockies 20 years ago,” adds Marketing and Communications Manager, Heather Jackson. “Unveiling our logo is the first exciting step in this rebranding process. We look forward to communicating further changes to our brand identity in the months to come.” Along with the new look, College of the Rockies remains committed to its vision of creating and providing the most personal student experience in Canada. Dogs, DNA and drones being used to find invasive species Dogs, drones and DNA testing are emerging as new tools to detect invasive species and keep them from becoming entrenched in B.C. The new tactics were described by experts Tuesday at a conference of the Invasive Species Council of B.C. in Richmond. Trained sniffer dogs have proven much more effective than human teams, particularly at night, in detecting tiny invasive zebra mussels that can cling to boats and then infest new lakes, according to Cindy Sawchuk, who heads Alberta’s Conservation K9 program that helps inspect water craft ar-

Proteins and mood
Proteins found in our diet (called amino acids) help us feel happy and healthy when we get enough of them and contribute to depression and anxiety when we don’t. Think back to the warm, relaxed, happy and sleepy feeling you had after your last big thanksgiving turkey meal. An amino acid called tryptophan is found in relatively high levels in turkey meat and, once eaten, is used to make the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin in turn gives us the warm post turkey feelings that make me look forward to the fall feast every year. Another amino acid called tyrosine is the building block for dopamine and norepinephrine, two other neurotransmitters that help regulate mood. If you experience clinical depression or chronic anxiety one of the underlying causes is absolutely connected to your lack of intake of specific amino acids. While malnourishment is not particularly common for those of us lucky enough to call Canada home, relative nutritional deficiencies (RND’s) are extremely common and contribute to chronic depression and anxiety. A RND is a state where the body gets enough nutrient to survive but not enough to be optimally healthy. In the case of depression and chronic anxiety there is a RND of tryptophan and tyrosine and supplementing with appropriate levels of these amino acids can correct the underlying nutritional cause of these
debilitating conditions. Many other conditions including ADD and ADHD, alzheimer’s, digestive troubles like IBS and inflammatory bowel disease and a host of other conditions are influenced by these same relative nutritional deficiencies and can be treated with the appropriate use of amino acid therapy. Another aspect of this story is how the body manages neurotransmitters once they are made from amino acids. The thiol system is made up of powerful protective molecules like glutathione and SAMe. In all cases of chronic disease there is some degree of collapse of the thiol system. One consequence of this collapse is the degradation of the neurotransmitters discussed above. Glutathione is a potent detoxifier which helps rid the body of all too common neurotoxins that destroy neurotransmitters. Another amino acid called L-cysteine is the building block for all the thiols including glutathione. L-cysteine, like tyrosine and tryptophan, is another common relative nutritional deficiency in people with chronic disease. Supplementing with cysteine rehabilitates the thiol system making you a better detoxifier, protecting your neurotransmitters and reducing the incidence of chronic disease. Therapeutic combinations of amino acids can safely and effectively treat the relative nutritional deficiencies at the heart of depression, anxiety and a host of other chronic illnesses.

ward.” Speedier inspections also mean less resistance from boat owners, some of whom had told Sawchuk they’d taken to entering the province in the dead of night to avoid inconvenience. The three highly trained dogs – Hilo, Seuss and Diesel – cost $25,000 each but Sawchuk says they’re cheap compared to an estimated $75 million a year Alberta estimates it would spend clearing clogged pipes, canals and water intakes if the mussels arrive. Delegates also heard from Fisheries and Oceans Canada scientist Davon Callander who is using DNA testing of water samples in the B.C. Interior to quickly determine if a given lake has a particular invasive fish species. Drones are being used near Creston to aerially map infestations of yel-
low flag iris, an invasive plant, in hard-to-reach wetland locations. Catherine Tarasoff, a researcher with Thompson Rivers University, hopes the rapidly evolving technology will soon allow scientists to program drones to fly autonomously at high speed, scanning large areas and stopping only to alert their operators when a suspect patch of vegetation matches target images. Technology may be helping thwart alien invaders. But Gail Wallin, executive director of the Invasive Species Council of B.C., says the best prevention rests in better choices by people, whose decisions in the past ushered in many of the species now disrupting ecosystems in B.C. Japanese knotweed – which is nearly impossible to eradicate and can punch through con-
crete – menaces roads, bridges and building foundations across Metro Vancouver and was first introduced as a garden plant. So was giant hog weed, another invasive landscaping plant but one that poses such a serious human health risk that there are specific WorkSafeBC rules for dealing with it. “It’s a great big tall 10 to 15 foot plant that’s got a hollow stock and it’s got a sap inside that causes your skin to be photosensitive, so when you get sun on it you get a second degree burn,” Wallin said. “Ten years ago people were proud that they had this exotic plant. Well now, you get it in park lands or around marsh areas and you wonder why did we ever plant this stuff in the first place. Because now we’ve got to hire teams in haz mat suits to remove it.”
Prostate Cancer Awareness and
Flowering rush is a new invasive plant that has been detected in three areas in B.C., including Whistler and the Hatzic area of the Fraser Valley, triggering an emergency response by the province to contain it. The plant grows underwater in lakes and

riving in that province from the east and south. Most of the 11 mussel-infested boats intercepted last summer entering Alberta from other jurisdictions were ultimately destined for B.C. lakes. Sawchuk’s superiors had dismissed her proposal for dogs as useful only for public relations, so she designed a trial in 2014 to test them. “The dogs were 100 per cent accurate in detecting the musselfouled boats and our humans came in at 75 per cent,” Sawchuk told delegates. “The dogs were also much quicker at detecting it. They averaged 2.3 minutes. And that included their play time for their re-

is very difficult to remove because the tiniest portion of the root left behind just regenerates more. Problematic invasive critters in the Lower Mainland include redeared slider turtles and American bullfrogs, as well as European fire ants, whose hostile attacks can render backyards almost unusable. The fire ants are thought to have often been spread when soil from construction sites was trucked from one place to another in the Lower Mainland. Feral pigs are running amok in some parts of southwestern B.C., but are a more significant problem in the Interior. The release of pets into the wild – rabbits, goldfish, koi and even the bizarre snakehead fish found in a Burnaby pond in 2012 – are yet more examples of where people could do better, Wallin said. What species haven’t yet made a beachhead that Wallin would like to keep out? She names rusty crayfish, which has arrived in Oregon from the east coast, likely as live fishing bait that escaped and thrived. “It’s a fairly aggressive crayfish and it can come in and overtake some of the native species and clams that are here.” Another is the European green crab, which has arrived on the west side of Vancouver Island, but has not yet reached Georgia Strait and Howe Sound. B.C.’s costs of dealing with invasive plants alone is estimated to hit $139 million a year by 2020, twice as much as in 2008.
