Avalanche Canada warns Cariboo residents after McBride tragedy In the wake of the deaths of five persons in an avalanche near McBride last week, the BC Coroners Service and Avalanche Canada are joining to stress the need for preparedness for those heading into the backcountry this winter. A total of 17 snowmobilers were in the Mount Renshaw Alpine Recreation Site when the

avalanche hit. First responders, the Coroners Service and Avalanche Canada all note that the majority of groups had proper rescue equipment with them and that the impressive effort made by those on scene to rescue themselves and others undoubtedly prevented the loss of more lives. However, notes Gilles Valade, Executive

Upcoming legislative session As your MLA for Cariboo North, I am pleased to report that Quesnel Primary Care Clinic operations have now started in its temporary location, at the Avery Health Clinic. This spring, the clinic will move into its permanent location on Front Street, across from GR Baker Memorial Hospital. This project would not have been possible without Northern Health and the City of Quesnel. Improving our health system is a priority for me. By working together we can continue to enhance healthcare in our community. Recently, our government announced that the Ministry of Health, health authorities, the Health Employers Association of BC and BCNU have jointly committed to work together to create 1,643 regular nursing positions to B.C.’s health system by March 31, 2016. Of these 1,643 positions, 100 of these positions are targeted for Northern Health. Nurses are important, highly-skilled members of health care teams throughout our province, playing an integral role in the health system. Over the past year, our government has been working closely with nurses to make health care improvements that benefit both patients and staff. We are confident this spirit of partnership will continue as we work together on a new collective agreement. The 2016 winter legislative session began February 9. Our government remains committed to controlling spending, balancing our budget and building a strong, diverse, and growing economy that creates jobs and prosperity. While at the Legislature, as your MLA for Cariboo North, I will continue to advocate on your behalf. My constituency office, located at #401 410 Kinchant Street, is open Monday by appointment and Tuesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed between 12 and 1 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns, please stop by. It’s time to take off the training wheels. For the first time, University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Theatre students will perform a production where the entire show is produced and presented exclusively by students. The Ensemble Project class of 16 upper-level students handle it all. They are the cast, crew and everything around and in between. “The core value of the Ensemble Project is that we’re all involved,” said Director Shawna Lawson. “And everyone is learning something new,” said Assistant Director Phay Gagnon. Each student brings prior theatre experience, like acting, writing or designing for UFV’s 15-minute “D-Fest” productions. However, everyone is taking on an entirely new or expanded role for this project. The students began by pitching show ideas to one another. In addition to content requirements, it had to be a show small enough that 16 people could successfully produce and perform without any assistance, yet large enough that everyone would be able to learn and grow from the experience. The Romeo Initiative, Stage Manager Eli Moores said, was that perfect middle ground. Written by Vancouverbased playwright Trina Davies, it’s a story of love, lies and intrigue, told

against a backdrop of Cold War politics in 1970s Germany. Once the script was selected, the students went about assigning the various roles. This was no simple name-out-of-a-hat process. They required pitches for crew and directing candidates, and auditions for the three character roles, each of which was followed by collaborative deliberation sessions. Described as romanticcomedy meets spy-thriller, The Romeo Initiative is not your typical love story. It follows the relationship between Karin (played by Emily Eggert-Botkin) and Markus (Reilly Ellis), and the bridge between them, Lena (played by Delaney Bergstrom). “One of the most fascinating things about this show,” said Artistic Coordinator Nial Harrison Morry, “is that you see the same story from two different perspectives.” Act

One is from Karin’s point of view, while Act Two is from Markus’. Through their subtleties, four seemingly identical scenes in each act are drastically different. Those opposing perspectives are visually demonstrated through careful design choices. Karin’s romantic, flowing skirt becomes rigid through Markus’ eyes. His memory of their rainy, dark wedding contrasts with her sunny recollection. The audience will be enthralled in spotting the differences. Thanks to the small cast, the audience will notice these subtle deviations as they gain an intimate look into each character’s life. And the closely-knit cast members have formed the trust necessary to genuinely portray scenes of heated passion or romance. Although the blackbox theatre venue at the Canada Education Park

(CEP) Campus is unlike what the students have experienced with prior UFV productions, Morry said it’s actually a good replication of what he and fellow students might work in for their early professional careers. Operating out of CEP also meant they were more than a few steps away from their instructors. Ensemble Project instructor Heather Davis-Fisch and technical professionals offered guidance only on an asneeded basis. “We have faculty support if we have questions, but they’re not doing our jobs for us,” Gagnon explained. By taking on the lead roles themselves, they’re gaining necessary independence. Being the “guinea pigs” of this project, the students agreed they are carrying a profound responsibility, but also they’re on an epic adventure. “The first time you do something, you learn a hell

of a lot,” said Morry. These UFV students are continuing to develop in their craft, but are also gaining invaluable experience by mentoring and supporting one another at the crosssection of each role. “You don’t want to limit yourself,” said Gagnon. What you like and what you’re good at might not be the same, so it’s important to try as many different roles as possible. “The more you know about all the areas, the better you are at whatever area you end up focusing on,” Lawson added. Actors need to understand the backstage perspective. Playwrights benefit from acting experience. Artistic coordinators draw on knowledge of set building and costume design. Come see what these collaborative, upper-level UFV students are capable of when they make all the decisions.

QuitNow sees success Program offers tools to butt out

There is simply no easy fix to going smoke-free, says Suzanne Gaby, Manager of the BC Lung Association’s QuitNow program. However she said, while there may be no magic bullet there is certainly a successful approach. “People who made full use of the QuitNow program— including free, one-on-one counseling with a Quit Coach— have seen amazing results: 24 percent success rate versus 4-7 percent for those going it alone,” Gaby said The reason why the QuitNow approach is so successful, explains Gaby, is that it is personally tailored to each individual. At the heart of this approach

are the program’s Quit Coaches – trained cessation counselors who help guide smokers through the planning and preparation process. Danielle Kochan, a Quit Coach with the program for five years, explains their motivational interviewing process. “Everybody has their own story of why they smoke and what’s motivating them to quit. No two calls are ever the same, and what works for one person won’t necessarily work for the next.” Noting that on average it takes eight major attempts before anybody quits smoking, Danielle tells people not to be discouraged by setbacks along the way. “I

like to teach people to think of slips and relapses as opportunities to learn what triggers their smoking. “Once you understand what’s driving you to smoke you can plan to be better prepared in the future.” Since 2011, QuitNow has helped more than 20,000 British Columbians with their quitting process. Quit Coaches are available to talk via phone (1.877.455.2233) or live chat at QuitNow.ca, where people can also find a comprehensive planning tool, a community forum, and information about the BC Cessation Program, which offers free quitting aids such as the gum and patch.

CITY COUNCIL NEWS Ready To Take Advantage of New Infrastructure Dollars In the next few weeks we’ll find out what additional resources the provincial and federal governments will make available to municipalities to address their social, physical, and green infrastructure needs. There have been numerous hints that more financial supports will be made more readily available to local governments, but the actual details won’t be known until we see the federal and provincial budgets in the coming weeks. A recently issued Report Card on the state of Canada’s infrastructure points out that almost 60% of the nation’s core infrastructure is owned and maintained by municipal governments and that, due to the lack of proper asset management planning and insufficient annual investments, fully one-third of this infrastructure is in fair, poor, or very poor condition. This represents a national municipal infrastructure deficit of approximately $389 billion or $28,000 per Canadian household. The Report Card also points out that annual investments in infrastructure based on an asset management plan results in significant savings to municipalities and their tax payers. It recommends that communities of all sizes, but particularly smaller communities, would benefit from increased asset management capacity and that all communities should consider issuing an annual State of Infrastructure Report. While Quesnel did not participate in the research leading to this national report card, our City has already implemented all the best practices recommended in the report. This includes:

Shell postpones LNG decision TOM FLETCHER Black Press With a world-wide slump in oil and natural gas prices extending further than expected, the Shell-led liquefied natural gas project proposed for Kitimat has delayed its final investment decision until the end of the year. Backed by a consortium of Shell Canada, Korea Gas, Mitsubishi and PetroChina, the LNG Canada project is a key part of the B.C. government’s bid to enter the global LNG export market. Along with delays on the Petronas-led Pacific Northwest LNG proposed for Prince Rupert, the chances of a large LNG project being under construction by the 2017 provincial election have faded. Premier Christy Clark was attending an industrial development conference in Ottawa

when the delay was revealed in Shell’s quarterly update. As with other global energy companies, the glut of oil resulted in a 44 per cent in earnings for Shell compared to the same quarter last year. Clark, who rode the prospect of an LNG revenue bonanza to victory in the 2013 B.C. election, acknowledged that the delay is significant. “What I was pleased to see, though, is that Shell has reconfirmed its intention to make a final investment

decision this year, even in these very uncertain times,” Clark said. LNG Canada CEO Andy Calitz was attending the same conference and he noted that the delay means all four international partners have agreed to stay with the project. “LNG Canada is in great shape as a project,” Calitz said. “We have all our federal and provincial environmental approvals in place, and the National Energy Board recently decided that they

Cariboo-Chilcotin Funeral Services

support a 40-year export licence.” Another factor in the delay is the ongoing Shell takeover of British Gas Group, which had its own proposal to build a pipeline and LNG terminal in the Prince Rupert area. LNG Canada has an agreement with TransCanada Corp. to build a pipeline through the Rocky Mountains from northeastern B.C., where Shell and

others have major gas drilling operations in the Montney shale near Dawson Creek and other gas-rich formations. Pacific Northwest LNG is still waiting for its federal environmental permit, after redesigning its LNG tanker port proposed for Lelu Island near the Prince Rupert port. Local protests have dogged the project over its potential impact on salmon in the Skeena River.

• conducting a robust appraisal of our infrastructure condition; • creating a long term asset management plan; • preparing a five year capital plan based on our asset management plan; • adjusting our fiscal framework to raise the finances required to address our annual infrastructure deficit; • adding capital planning capacity to our public works department; and • proactively preparing “shovel ready” projects to take advantage of federal and provincial infrastructure dollars as they come available. So, Quesnel is ready and able to engage in whatever new infrastructure programs the federal and provincial governments come up with. However, previous federal and provincial infrastructure programs had two shortcomings: they tended to be narrowly focussed on what the senior levels of government believed were the priority needs and they required municipal governments to come up with one-third of the total project costs. This limited the ability of most municipalities to participate in these infrastructure programs fully, if at all. There’s some buzz that this dynamic may be changing; that local governments may be more involved in priority setting and that the required financial contribution from municipalities will be reduced. If the current rhetoric about changes to the federal infrastructure program turns into reality this would be good news for Quesnel, as Council’s proactive management of our budget and our infrastructure program has positioned the City well to take advantage of any new opportunities the federal and provincial governments make available. We will have “shovel ready projects” to expand our trail networks, improve our road systems, update our water system, improve accessibility, and attract investment in both affordable and market housing. We’re in a good position to take advantage of any infrastructure programs that will be announced in the coming weeks.

ndications that the province of British Columbia will allow firefighters to carry naloxone, also known as Narcan, is welcome. The drug is known as the “antidote” to opiate overdose, and can reverse the otherwise deadly effects of ingesting too much heroin and/or fentanyl. Despite often being first on the scene of overdoses, firefighters, police officers and others who don’t have a required prescription for naloxone have thus far been banned from carrying the drug. Addressing that is a move that is long overdue, given the stakes involved and the safe nature of Naloxone. It is available over the counter in more than a dozen U.S. states, and hospitals have been using the drug for more than four decades. Earlier this summer, Health Canada promised that it would review the drug’s prescription-only status, although a full process was expected to take more than a year. Whatever the outcome of that review, the fact that it’s only being done now – after too many deaths from accidental overdoses – shows that our society, and our government institutions, still have much they can do to help those on the fringes who have frequently been overlooked. While the drugs drive some into a life of homelessness and property crime, they are also used by husbands and mothers, sons and daughters, employees and bosses who conduct lives not stereotypically associated with hard drug use. In cases of overdose, all of those people – those on the fringes, and those in the mainstream – deserve the best shot at life, and the best opportunity at eventually overcoming their addictions. The quicker the province moves on this initiative, for all emergency responders, the better. –BP

Protesters fear peace in forests A

fter 20 years of representing B.C. coastal First Nations to negotiate what U.S.-directed activists labeled the Great Bear Rainforest agreement, a weary Dallas Smith expressed his relief and frustration. At a ceremony to sign the final agreement in Vancouver last week, Smith, president of the Nanwakolas Council of remote Central Coast communities like Bella Bella, joked that he’s finally out of a job. Then he got serious. “My communities still aren’t better places to live yet,” he said. But the land use agreement with the province and forest companies over a vast coastal area up to the Alaska border means the years ahead will be better. He said when he started it was like being caught in a divorce between the B.C. forest industry and international environmental groups. Dutch-based Greenpeace, its California offshoot ForestEthics and others moved on from their Clayoquot Sound battle to the B.C. coast, looking to continue the blockades

Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views against logging. “It’s the First Nations of the Coast who stood up and said ‘no, this is how it’s going to work’,” Smith said. How it’s going to work is that logging will continue on 550,000 hectares of coastal forest, with a greater share for First Nations, and with 85 per cent of the region preserved after a century of logging that began with sailing ships. Aside from a few diehards who are either paid to protest or can’t get past issuing demands, B.C. aboriginal people have grown tired of being used as props in global de-marketing campaigns directed from San Francisco or Amsterdam. The protesters’ tactic of organizing customer boycotts that damage far-away economies might be good for international fundraising, but it’s bad for poor people.

attacking their own B.C. agreement as inadequate, Greenpeace and ForestEthics have moved on to what they call the “boreal forest,” which we like to call northern Canada. The same bully tactics with forest products customers and producers have been featured. This time, a Quebec company that signed an accord in 2010 is suing Greenpeace for “defamation, malicious falsehood and intentional interference in economic relations.” Aboriginal companies on the B.C. coast will continue to log, including areas of old-growth forest and secondary growth. They will continue to export logs as economics dictate. They will continue to harvest animals, including grizzly bears. And, I expect, they will continue to be subjected to attempts to supervise and direct them by members of urban society’s new religion, environmentalism. The leaders of this movement don’t like peace. It’s bad for their business. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Email: tfletcher@blackpress. ca Twitter: @tomfletcherbc

Formally begun 10 years ago with $30 million from Ottawa, $30 million from B.C. and $60 million from a group of wealthy U.S. family foundations with a larger anti-development agenda, the land use plan remains under attack. Among the many protest outfits is Pacific Wild, which has specialized in Great Bear Rainforest campaigns and now needs a new enemy. Their credibility was demonstrated recently when potty-mouthed U.S. pop star Miley Cyrus decided to speak out against B.C.’s wolf kill. Typical of celebrities, Cyrus had no idea about the struggle to preserve dwindling herds of mountain caribou. She barely knows where B.C. is, a fact made plain when Pacific Wild toured her around the North Coast, far from the Kootenay and South Peace regions where the wolves in question actually roam. Cyrus’s handlers spoonfed video and statements to urban media, who were so anxious to exploit her global popularity that they played down the fact she was at the wrong end of the province spouting nonsense. To save or not to save

D

id we or did we not save $13? I have been reading with interest how Quesnel Youth Soccer will now receive funding from the Sub-Regional Recreation budget. Since October of 2015 if not earlier discussions were on the JPC agenda to include soccer. Beginning in 2016 my understanding they will receive $70,000 per year, with yearly increases based on inflation as a management fee, capital upgrades will also be covered, i.e. heating units, indoor turf. Where will JPC find the funding for this? This budget is not passed by the CRD until the end of March. I know for a fact that rural residents of Areas A, B, C & I in the North Cariboo, in January of 2008 voted no to any funding for Quesnel Youth Soccer? Believe me that was a turbulent affair. So now soccer is in without full consultation absolutely amazing. In 1988 a referendum was held to include Alex Fraser Park in Sub-regional recreation – every time they need additional funding there is usually a debate. The Alex Fraser Park Management Society was formed after the referendum to manage the Park, in the beginning I believe they were given $20,000 per year, yet today 28 years later they receive funding in the amount of $35,000 per year (will they now receive funding increases based on inflation yearly) – what about the capital costs, will that be the same as soccer? Not many years ago there was a huge political debate when they needed washrooms built at the park – when the grand stands and Ag-Plex were built somehow there was an over site as washrooms were never included, years later

Letters to the Editor

when they came to JPC to discuss this, what a debate, there never should have been one, that is a public park. Don’t misunderstand me they do get assistance with capital (will they now be viewed the same as soccer)? it has never been easy for them to receive funding. How many years ago did they receive an increase in their management fees? So Youth Soccer receives twice as much in management fees and capital with No referendum or discussion with the public. Is that an insult to Alex Fraser Park or what? The North Cariboo referendum for the new Arena passed in June of 2014. The tax increase on the question was for $26.00 per $100,000 of assessment that tax was brought in last year 2015. The pre taxation we were using prior to this was $13 per $100,000 which to my understanding and others that was to be reduced, in other words the new arena was promoted to actually only cost taxpayers an additional $13 more per year. I actually have a copy of an ad taken out by three local businesses that states VOTE YES - it will only cost $13 more. So where did JPC find the funding for the Youth Soccer? Did we or did we not reduce the taxation or is the $13 or $300,000 per year now being used to fund other projects (soccer) and considerations for future inclusions? Regardless at the end of the day consultation increases the level of transparency for all concerned. Understanding the history of Canadian-Japanese relationships In finalizing the “Who’s Who in Quesnel, the city’s Mayor and council’s compliance of the Sister City Association’s members by-law, “ sister city country relationship becomes official with a signing ceremony of the top elected officials of the two local jurisdictions following approval by the local city council” This completed the city’s registration, the 18th city in Canada to register as a member of the International Sister City Association. The question” Why” can only be answered by understanding the history. Why is there a twinning? Why have so many cities all twinned with Japan? Why is it an international twinning in Canada and the United States? Why is it important for us today ? As the “Why” unfolds and becomes understood, it is still important not to forget the “ Who”. wo men, both young, one Canadian, one Japanese, each having the same ailment, a

burning fever for adventure. Neither one knowing of the other, as they were several decades apart, having no idea the impact they would achieve in changing the world. A chief fur trader Archibald MacDonald was employed by Hudson Bay Company. A son was born Ranald McDonald in 1824 at Fort George (now Astoria ) near the mouth of the Columbia River. Ranald’s mother, Kaole’xod (Princess Raven) was the daughter of Chinook chief Comcomly, of the west coast. She died a few months after his birth, his father remarried the daughter of another fur trader. In 1826 Archibald was assigned to Fort Kamloops, the H.B.C. fort was located on the present site of Kamloops Indian Reserve, then in 1829 he moved to Fort Langley and in 1833 to Covile. The land north of the Columbia River in Washington and British Columbia was called the Oregon Country which was the domain of the

At the time Ranald McDonald was in Japan, the ancient society, ruled by the Tokugawa Shogunate was on the brink of toppling. Japanese society was looking for more communication with the rest of the world, something forbidden by the Tokugama Shogunate, a feudal order that promoted a self-sufficient society. Ranauld left Japan in 1849 and the fall of the Shogunate was in 1868. Several rebellions took place over the next 20 years as the new Japanese order was established. Samurai, members of the hereditary warrior class in feudal Japan, staged a series of armed uprisings against the new imperial government including the Boshin War and the Chosyu clan, shown in this photo. Hudson Bay Company, until 1846 when the Treaty of British and American territories was signed, establishing the present Canadian American border. Ranald, when he came of age, was sent to school east to the Red River at Fort Garry, ( Winnipeg.) Not satisfied with life, with dreams of adventure, he quit his apprenticeship as a banker in 1845 and shipped out of Sag Harbor in New York aboard the whaling ship Plymouth for the Pacific Coast which he believed would reveal a connection to his mother’s people on the North West Coast. He was determined to someday visit Japan. Upon arriving in Vancouver, he heard of a Japanese whaling shipwreck on the north coast of B.C. He again boarded the Plymouth in 1848. When the whaler entered the Sea of Japan, Ranald arranged with the captain to drop him off in a row boat near Rishiri Island on the west coast of Ezo (Hokkaido). He was rescued by the Ainu aboriginals of Hokkaido, appearing as a shipwrecked sailor. With Japan’s policy to exclude foreigners, it was not uncommon to execute foreigners. He was shipped to Nagasaki where he was interrogated, why was he in the country? The governor accepted his story of being shipwrecked and was spared execution, but was imprisoned in a small cage. Japan was becoming eager to learn of the outside world. They soon recognized his abilities. Ranald became the first native Japanese teacher to teach English to the Shogunite, documenting a 500-word Japanese English dictionary. Providing instruction to 14 government interpreters, one of his students Einasuki Mariyama, became a negotiator during the visits of American Commodore Mathew Perry and British Lord Elgin, which ultimately led to opening of Japan to the western world and an end to the Tokugawa Shogunate era. In 1849 Ranald was deported with a group of shipwrecked sailors on board the American warship USS Preble. He regretted leaving, remarking “there are none to whom I feel more kindly, than my oldest host of Japan, none of whom I esteem more highly.” He spent time at his father’s home

in Lower Canada (Quebec.) His adventures were not over; returning to B.C. in 1858 to the Pacific Coast in time for the Fraser River gold rush. In 1861 Ranald procured a licence to run a ferry across the Fraser River at Lillooet and attempted to open a toll road from Bella Coola to Alexandria. Several other ventures in mining and exploration in the Horsefly area earning him $60,000, but he lost it all, then ran a pack train from Hat Creek, near Cache Creek, to the gold fields where he purchased land. For a time Ranald was in the employ of Barnard’s Express and stage Line. After many experiences throughout the Cariboo and Kamloops, where he spent much of his time, he passed away in 1894 near Torado, Washington, at the age of 70. His contributions to Japan are featured in the ninth grade text book in present day Japanese Middle school. Monuments are erected in Rishiri and Nagasaki Japan , for his contribution to the country. Ranald McDonald helped to open up Japan to the outside world. He suffered greatly from the nature of his nationality, but also from the fact he was not white, it made it difficult to fit into early history. Ranald never married. – submitted by Phil Demers

Our heart beats 100,000 times a day pumping about 6 litres of blood every minute. It’s important we keep this organ really healthy. February is Heart Month in Canada, a time to reinforce the fact that regular exercise is the single most important thing we can do to keep our heart healthy. It’s good preventative maintenance and it doesn’t cost a thing! CVS is a large pharmacy chain in the U.S. In September 2014 it made a very courageous but very professional decision to ban the sale of tobacco products from all its stores. Statistics collected by a national market research firm showed that there were 95 million fewer packs of cigarettes sold nationwide in the year following this decision. Medical technology is making it easier for women to know when they are most likely to get pregnant. Actually the window is fairly small, limited to a few days before and after ovulation. There are testing kits that help determine when these days are. Our pharmacists will be happy to discuss this subject with you. There is so much research being done to find better medications for all medical conditions. We do our best to keep up-to-date on this research. Top ten healthy heart tips

1. Stay positive. Not only is optimism good for the soul, it can also counteract stress. A more relaxed “you” has a lesser chance of developing heart disease. 2. Slow down. Unplug from the digital world and remember some classic diversions. Write a letter, read a physical book, or sing a song you used to love. 3. Catch some zzz’s. People who don’t get enough sleep are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease

– regardless of age, weight, smoking, and exercise habits. 4. Know your numbers. Talk to your healthcare provider about where your cholesterol and blood pressure should be and come up with a plan to keep them there. 5. Exercise regularly. Not only is being physically active a leading contributor to weight loss, it releases mood-boosting endorphins. 6. Drink plenty of water.

Obituary Tribute

Giovanni Valoroso Nov. 10, 1948 ~ Feb. 7, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that the Valoroso family announce the passing of Giovanni Valoroso. Many of you have known John and Carmen since they opened Penisola in the late ‘80s as they grew their business and raised their family. John immigrated from Sicily to Canada in 1971 and is survived by his wife Carmen and daughters Alessandra, Paola, Laura, Nicole and Stefania. John will be remembered for his love of gardening, Italian football,

music, the arts, and creating beautiful food. He was dedicated to his business and family and worked hard to help beautify Quesnel. Thank you for your condolences and kind words. There will be a small service for family and friends at Clayton’s Funeral Chapel on Thursday, February 11th at 1:00 pm followed by a gathering at Penisola at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Quesnel Auxiliary. A special thank-you to the nurses at G.R. Baker Memorial for their kindness and care of John.

Ladies Wheel and Spiel a success RYAN GRAHAM Observer Reporter

The Quesnel Curling Club held the 56th Ladies Wheel and Spiel Jan. 29 – 31 with 21 teams taking part. The winner of the overall event was the team of Dana Johansen, Darla Duguid, Carol Richter and Cara Kardynal, who beat Terry Shpak’s team in the A final 11-5. Johansen and her team were the winners of the 2015 B event. The team of Wendy Needham,

Shari Needman, Penny Yamamoto and Karen Robles took the B event as they defeated the Ev Lawson team in a close contest. Both teams were tied after the seventh end but Needham’s team gained the advantage and never looked back, as they went on for the win. The C finals saw another close game as the team of Christy Whitney, Kathy Somerville, Cindy Nikirk and Carol Mankowski defeat the Brenda Ernst team to take the win.

Quesnel Biathlon team performs well at BC Cup The CSTC Biathlon team was racing in Prince George at the BC Cup races, the weekend of January 30-31. The racers had great conditions at the Otway ski trails – the snow was fast and the temperatures were friendly. With over 80 participants, there was good competition from all over BC.

All racers had great performances in the Sprint races and the Individual races, and some had podium finishes. Quesnel can be proud of a strong biathlon team again this year. The team is looking forward to the final BC Cup event in Whistler the weekend of Feb.13, 14.

Vile Pole Arts to hold production RYAN GRAHAM Observer Reporter Vile Pole Arts will is presenting Paper Dolls a dark romance production on Feb. 13 at the Seniors Centre. The show will feature pole arts, aerial hoop and hammock and dancing with the focus on pole dancing. They will have a bar that will be open until 1 a.m. and will have music and dancing after the show. “It’s not just a showcase like we’ve done before,” Co-organizer Joel Kolenchuk said. “It’s a full story line, so you expect to come in and go a long for a ride.” This will be the first time that they’ve run it as a show. “The last time we did one was in Kersley last summer, but we did it just as a showcase,” Kolenchuk said. “Each person would come up and do one dance which

didn’t necessarily tie into each other, but we had a general theme for the event. This one has a little more to it. Lots of props and way more lighting, so it’s a little bit more of an endeavour.” He said the event at Kersley last year received a great response. “Last year we sold out from the day we started selling tickets, so it was pretty quick,” Kolenchuk said. “Afterwards it was a really great response from the people telling us it was good and they would love to see another one.” They picked the Seniors Centre because of the size of the facility and because it’s in town. Tickets are $25 in advance and can be picked up at Karin’s Deli and Health Food and Vile Pole Arts, as well as at the door for $30. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Big thanks to the coaches Chris Elden, Jim Kurta and Jim Crellin, for making it possible for these athletes to compete in the 2016 BC Cup series. Individual results can be viewed at http://biathlonbc.ca/results/ – Submitted by CSTC
