veterans to overcome physical or mental health illness or injury through physical activity and sport, through friends and decided to apply for the ski week. “It was a challenge for me because at that time, I had just got off surgery; half my left leg is paralyzed and I wanted to test and see if I could ski again,” he said. “I thought Soldier On was a great place. “What I liked the most about it was the fraternity of the people here,” he added. “It was the first time I was put in a group of 40 person that they were all dealing with injuries. It was very, very beneficial, just to talk to each other and happen to know somebody was injured as well. Soldier On emphasizes instead of staying in the dark and alone behind curtains, go out there, become active and meet somebody and you see that you’re not alone with

your problems.” Carpentier joined the military in 1993 and served in Bosnia, Alert and Kabul, as well as two times in Kandahar. He was injured in Kandahar, and since then, he has been accommodated by Soldier On and has been able to continue serving with 5 RALC (5e Régiment d’artillerie légère du Canada). Carpentier returned to Mount Washington Feb. 1-5 as a Soldier On instructor for the 10th annual National Veterans’ Ski Week, sponsored by Soldier On and hosted by the Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsports (VISAS) and Mount Washington Alpine Resort. Carpentier is now the Quebec representative at Soldier On. Carpentier has loved coming back this year as an instructor. “It was great to see all the last year faces and the wonderful people at VISAS,” he said. “I

didn’t see that very often in my life, so many volunteers helping us and always available for us. It’s a great thing to see that what we did in the service is still well recognized.” During National Veterans’ Ski Week, 40 ill and injured serving and retired CAF members from all across Canada were introduced or re-introduced to alpine downhill skiing and snowboarding, as well as Nordic skiing. Karina Drury of Barrie, Ont., tried snowboarding for the first time during the week. After four days on the hill, she said she thought she’d finally found the sport that fits her best. “The instructors have been great, and I’m just having a blast,” she said on Feb. 4. “If I could spend every day out on the hills, I would totally do it … It was a rough start. I was very fearful my first day and now I’m like ripping it down the hill like everyone

I’ve been to other sports and done other things where I feel different than other people, but when I’m on my board and I’m going down the hill, I feel the same as everyone else and that’s a huge thing.” Drury served at CFB Borden. About four weeks into basic training, they had just finished a rucksack march when they had to practise their fireman carry after the march. During the fireman carry, the woman who was car-

rying Drury dropped her. Drury fell very awkwardly on her feet and broke her ankles. She then got attached to the CAF’s Joint Personnel Support Unit and worked at the post office on base. “I didn’t get to finish basic training, and it hurts,” she said. “I was planning 25 years.” Drury was very grateful for the chance to receive a week of oneon-one instruction. “Between Adaptive Snowsports here at

Over the course of the week, he noticed a lot of smiles as the veterans came into the lodge after their runs and a lot of camaraderie being built. “I think the veterans coming in, a lot of them, they don’t all know each other, and I think they’ve all developed some friendships during the course of the week - and so have we; we’ve all gotten to know them a lot better this week,” he said. Mike Stubbs of Campbell River and his wife Laura have been volunteering with VISAS for 11 years and have been instructing during National Veterans’ Ski Week since it started. “It’s very rewarding,”

Postal workers: ‘We’ve carried Canada Post on our backs’ the comments made by Canada Post spokesperson Anick Losier were “overwhelmingly untrue, which has been the standard response since the onset of this contentious program. “We the public and the union do not have access to the complaints made to Canada Post, but Ms. Losier’s statement does not resemble the daily complaints that postal workers receive on the street,” wrote Judd. “What we have heard is the 1-866 number provided is a draining experience, you may be on hold for 20 minutes to get a ticket number and the operator may have generic information for you if you are lucky.” Knight says he was surprised to hear Canada Post say there have been few complaints in Campbell River. “We had lineups out the door for at least six weeks of people with problems with their keys,” he said. “We had neighbours getting their

neighbours’ keys, we had keys opening the wrong boxes, we had people who hadn’t gotten keys but the box had been activated so we were delivering to the box but they had no key so they went without mail for three weeks. During the cold snap, we had boxes that were frozen solid and people couldn’t even get into their box to get their mail for multiple weeks. “After we got snow just before Christmas, they didn’t shovel any of them, and then it froze solid for two weeks, so they just turned into a big block of ice all around the box, which is totally unsafe for the citizens of Campbell River. There were complaints of people falling, elderly people who are trying to get to the box, and they’re falling and hurting themselves before they even get their mail.” Knight feels that Canada Post has ignored that there’s been a problem in Campbell River and hasn’t done anything to

ple working than ever at Canada Post, and really, all the workers at Canada Post just want to be able to deliver door-todoor to their customers. That’s the job satisfaction of seeing the public. I mean, we never asked for this.” People who have complaints in Campbell River have been con-

City staff recommend waiving fees for service dogs

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

City staff are recommending council exempt

the owners of service dogs from having to pay licensing fees thanks to the efforts of a Campbell River woman.

Megan Hurn, who recently acquired a registered diabetic alert service dog, wrote to city council last month

to express her surprise at being charged the $20 licensing fee. Hurn explained that in her training classes,

www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

she was told that many jurisdictions waive the licence fee for service dogs and she wondered why Campbell River was

not one of them. Upon reading Hurn’s letter Jan. 11, council asked city staff to look into the matter.

Karl Read, bylaw enforcement officer, came back to council at its Tuesday night meeting – which took place after the Mirror went to press – recommending that changes be made. “Mindful of the service to the community that such dogs provide, it is proposed that dog licence fees be waived for guide and service dogs, RCMP dogs, and Search and Rescue dogs,” Read wrote in a report to council. He acknowledged that Vancouver and Kelowna waive the fee for licensing guide and service dogs while Nanaimo doesn’t require guide dogs – or RCMP dogs – to be licensed at all. Hu r n s ai d t hat’s because there is a significant cost associated with maintaining a service dog. And Read noted that it’s not much of a loss to the city. “The economic impact on the city is expected to be minimal,” Read wrote. “The BC Security Programs Division of the Ministry of Justice … advises there are currently four certified guide and service dogs in Campbell River. “There is one RCMP dog domiciled in Campbell River and one certified Search and Rescue dog. A second Search and Rescue Dog is in the process of training for certification.” Council was expected to make a decision on staff ’s recommendation at Tuesday’s council meeting, after the Mirror’s press deadline. At the same time, city staff were also asking council to exempt guide and service dogs, RCMP dogs and Search and Rescue dogs from the city bylaw that bans dogs from areas of parks, Discovery Pier, tot lots and playgrounds. That exemption would also allow those dogs to be unleashed to properly fulfill their role, “provided the dog is under effective control of a competent person and is performing its function as a Guide and Service dog, RCMP dog or Search and Rescue dog,” Read said.

Oyster River School closure D-day delayed Mike Davies CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A self-declared conflict of interest at the beginning of the school closure consultation process has spurred a slight change to the timeline of that process. At last week’s public meeting of the Board of Education, School District 72 (SD72) secretary treasurer Kevin Patrick suggested the possibility of moving the final decision on the closure of Oyster River Elementary at a Special Meeting on March 16 instead of the day before at the board’s regular public meeting. Trustee Daryl Hagen has declared a conflict of interest in the closure discussions surrounding Oyster River Elementary, and as such, according

to Patrick, “the board is now required to hold two separate meetings for each of the potential school closures.” He also suggested that “regular business for both of those meetings be tabled and that the focus just be closure conversation and decision.” Trustee Joyce McMann said she thinks the idea of having separate meetings to discuss and decide on the school closures independently of each other was a good idea anyway, no matter the reasoning for doing so. The motion to schedule the Special Meeting for March 16 for discussion and decision regarding the possible closure of Oyster River Elementary was made by Trustee Richard Franklin, seconded by Trustee John

Kerr, and passed unanimously. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the SD72 offices at 425 Pinecrest Rd. The decision about Discovery Passage will still be made at the regularly scheduled public meeting on March 15. The district is still compiling the comments received from the first series of public meetings – held at each respective school on Jan. 25 and 27 – and will be releasing a Q&A to address questions and concerns as soon as possible. The second and final public consultation meetings will be held at Discovery Passage Elementary on March 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and at Oyster River Elementary on March 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and written submis-

sions are still being received by the Board of Education until Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. Submissions can be sent c/o the Secretary-Treasurer at the School Board Office, 425 Pinecrest Road, Campbell River BC, V9W 3P2 or by email to facilities. plan@sd72.bc.ca The Board will also hear public submissions at their Feb. 23 public board meeting being held at the School Board Office (425 Pinecrest Road) at 7:30 p.m. Information regarding the school closure consultation process including an online forum, the 2015-2025 Facility Plan, the facility closure recommendation report, and school information packages can be found on the district website at sc72.bc.ca/ schoolclosures

The objective of the program was to provide an opportunity for seniors to go for an outing and enjoy the day in a safe, social setting. “The seniors are truly appreciative of these opportunities,” says Pam Mann of the Campbell River & District Adult Care Society, “the feedback has been very positive.” Since it was founded in 1990, the Foundation

has reached nearly $2 million in permanent endowment funds and has given out nearly $300,000 in grants to many local non-profit organizations in the City of Campbell River and area served by School District 72. The Foundation is looking forward to reviewing the new applications in the coming weeks. “These grants are given to sup-

At least one waste management company is concerned with a new city policy to fine waste companies who don’t remove graffiti from their dumpsters. City council has given first and second reading to the city’s public nuisance bylaw that, if approved, would give waste disposal companies 12 days to remove tags from its garbage bins or be slapped with a $250 fine. Steve Hocking, operations for Progressive Waste Solutions, wrote in a letter to the city that the timeline is unreasonable. “ The management team would like to express our concerns at this time regarding the allotted timeline given to repair and paint any graffiti laden recepta-

cles,” Hocking wrote. He suggested the city provide some leeway and give the companies a three-week or 15 business day time frame “as this is a time consuming process based on excess labour and increased expense.” Hocking also recommended that the waste companies not be liable for any graffiti that reappears on the bins after they’ve already been fixed or refurbished and that any repair expense be the responsibility of the business and/or property owner. Hocking further suggested that the city “create a one year (12 month) deliberation process for review without imposing any type of penalty or fine.” Council was expected to consider Hocking’s letter at its Tuesday night council meeting, after the Mirror went to press,

and to give third reading to the bylaw amendment. City Clerk Peter Wipper told council that city staff have contacted eight waste collection companies to notify them of the possible changes and only Progressive has responded with a letter. Waste Management, however, has indicated that it intends on sending a written submission while Contain Away Services, Supersave Disposal and All Type Trucking have all told the city they have no intention of making a submission. The crackdown on graffiti removal was justified by City Bylaw Enforcement Officer Pat Patterson as a way to get a handle on the increasing amounts of tags popping up on dumpsters. Coun. Ron Kerr said at the Dec. 14 council meeting, when the item first surfaced, that while

it may seem unfair, it’s something that needs to be dealt with. “This is vandalism we’re talking about and unfortunately there is a cost to the owners of the containers,” Kerr said. “But to neglect the removal of the tagging would undermine the hard work of the community to clean up this scourge of tagging within the community.” Harding, though, said there has to be a better solution. “As we are all aware, the consistent tagging of waste receptacles, commercial buildings and other stand alone structures, this constant problem will always persist within any city unless the vandals are caught and prosecuted in a court of law,” Harding wrote. “Placing full accountability for this act should not be exclusive to the local waste companies.” The city has made efforts in the past year to curb the amount of graffiti appearing across the city. Council spent $55,000 last year on a graffiti clean-up program targeting roadway infrastructure such as light poles, road signs and benches. The city also updated its public nuisance bylaw in 2014 with a requirement that property owners remove graffiti within five business days of its appearance.

Survey says NIC students satisfied with their education Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

ministry release. The surveys were conducted by BC Stats, and asked students from 20 of B.C.’s public post-secondary institutions questions about their educational experience and how they felt it was of benefit to them (or not), their employment outcomes – current employment and how it relates (or doesn’t) to what they studied – and whether they had additional post-secondary educa-

tion prior to or after their attendance at the school. North Island College students responded with a 92 per cent or better “Satisfaction with Education” rating in each of the past three years of the Diploma, Associate Degree, and Certificate Student Outcomes Survey and 67 per cent of respondents said they were currently in a job that was “somewhat related” or “very related” to their program of

study at NIC when they responded to the survey. They also rated NIC’s “Quality of Instruction” at 82 per cent and 54 per cent of respondents said their education was “Very” useful in getting a job. For comparison, while most colleges of similar size had similar overall “Satisfaction with Education” numbers in the low 90th percentile, only 48 per cent of respondents who attended Capilano

University in North Vancouver said their education was “Very” useful in getting a job, and only 47 per cent said they were in a job either “Very related” or “Somewhat related” to their field of study. R esp ondents w ho attended Langara College in Vancouver were even less thrilled about their education, with a mere 30 per cent saying their education was “Very” useful in getting

a job, and only 44 per cent saying they were employed in a position related to their field of study. The survey is not intended to give a complete view of how all students from any particular institution felt about their education. Responding to a survey like this is voluntary and in this case, the questions and responses were subjective, according to the Ministry of Education.

The Ministr y of Advanced Education recently unveiled a new tool based on survey information gathered from students who have attended post-secondary institutions around the province. The survey was aimed at finding out how satisfied past students were with the education they received. According to the data

The findings of the Student Outcomes Surveys have been made into a handy and easy-to-use online tool – called the BC Student Outcomes Dashboard – and is designed to give students “the best information available to make decisions about their education,” according to the

Testing has shown that several microorganisms found in worm castings work as effective repellents for a large array of insects. A key element for insect repellency is the level of chitinase-producing Christa Fernau organisms. Chitinase is an enzyme that will dissolve chitin. The exoskeleton of bugs is made of chitin (so bviously they don’t want to hang out where their skeletons will get dissolved!). Bugs have various detection mechanisms to determine the level of chitinase in plants and soil. Once the chitinase level is high enough, they will leave the area.Worm castings test with a very high level of chitinase-producing organisms.

Taking Ash Wednesday to the streets Perusing the daily scroll of international news recently, an interesting item suddenly caught my eye. Not because it had a dramatic headline about death and destruction or a shocking, eye-catching photo. No, it was because it was about a solemn religious observance and how in recent years it’s been given a fresh, new spin. I’m talking about Ash Wednesday, which is observed by many Christians, and marks the start of Lent – the 40-day period before Easter. This year, Ash Wednesday happens to land on this very day. There is, apparently, a growing movement just south of the border to take Ash Wednesday to the masses; to include people who don’t identify with any religious order or even regularly step foot inside a church. The concept seems simple enough, but at the same time it surprised me. Churches across the United States and England,

Please allow for some navel gazing today. We hope it provides some insight. Some newspapers in this country have decided to stop allowing people the opportunity to provide online comments to their stories. The CBC did the same last year. Our online comments system at Black Press is set up differently than some others — you have to have a Facebook account to comment. Any changes to our current system would likely come from a wider, company-wide discussion. We understand and agree with the sentiment expressed by organizations that have suspended comment on their websites. For some reason, trolls believe there are different rules about what they can say online as opposed to print or face to face. Using Facebook to allow comments on our stories is far from bulletproof. It’s more difficult to hide your identity on Facebook, but still possible. Even if it’s clear who is writing a hurtful, hateful comment, that comment is still there for a time until we can catch it and delete. We monitor the comments on our stories, being sure to check multiple times in a day what’s being written. But it’s not reasonable to expect us to have someone monitoring the comments 24/7/365. Thankful for the life we’ve been given. Ash Wednesday is a reminder of our mortality – something we don’t like to think about yet at the same time something we can’t escape. It’s truth. And for one day we’re all the same, all facing the same truth – that when it comes right down to it, we’re all made of dust. I don’t mean to sound grim – what I’m trying to say is it’s a time to remember to slow down and appreciate what you have. We all lead busy lives and sometimes we feel like there are just some people we can’t relate to, no matter how hard we try. But in the end, we’re all the same, no matter what your beliefs, where you grew up, where you work, or how you were raised. Today, on Ash Wednesday, let’s embrace forgiveness, understanding, and most of all – one another.

NIC researcher innovating in aquaculture Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

One local researcher is trying to change the way fish are farmed on our coast. Stephen Cross, industrial research chair for sustainable aquaculture and developer of the Aquaculture Technician program at the Campbell River campus of North Island College (NIC), is working with west coast salmon farmers to explore the feasibility of co-culturing kelp and other forms of seafood around established fish farms and diversifying the production at those facilities. The goal, Cross says, is to create a more environmentally sustainable farm, “that mimics

natural ecosystems and produces additional seafood products within each individual operation. Once we discover the right species mix and production balance, we could create an entirely new way to produce seafood.” The approach is dubbed the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture (SEAfood) System, and it layers sablefish with oysters, scallops, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and sugar kelp within the same farming operation, creating one ecosystem where the various species all thrive due to the presence of each other, and has been gaining international recognition. “Generally, how it

fish or even a salmon – which would be your primary ‘fed’ species, and then all the other species would be using either the waste from that species or whatever comes with the currents, for sustenance,” explains Naomi Tabata, manager of the Centre for Applied Research, Technology & Innovation at NIC. “This is world-class innovation and research and we are so pleased to be able to share Dr. Cross’ expertise with Campbell River businesses.” Basically, the fish is fed by humans; the oysters, scallops and mussels downstream from the fish feed on their waste, then long lines of kelp – used in sushi and bioethanol – then filter the water further. Lastly, way down on the sea floor, sea cucumbers vacuum up the leftover organic waste missed

by the other organisms in the chain. Cross is currently testing infrastructure, manufacturing prototypes, assessing alternative energy systems and exploring cost-effective business models for commercial production. Part of that testing and research involves the hiring of students from both the Aquaculture Technician program in Campbell River and various students and researchers from other disciplines and programs in other schools, such as the University of Victoria. “Given the inherent multi-disciplinary nature of our approach we typically have engineering, marine biology, physics, electronics, oceanography, business, economics, and governance students engaged in our proj-

ects,” Cross says. Another facet of Cross’ current research, fittingly, is exploring B.C.’s potential for kelp production. Kelp lines being installed at more than 30 different farm sites off Vancouver Island – just this week, in fact – are part of the largest ever study of its kind. “Last year, NIC started preliminary trials at a test site near Tofino which showed good growing potential for a commercial seaweed industry,” Tabata says. “This year, the study is much more extensive – with test lines going in near Tahsis, Baynes Sound, Tofino, Port Hardy and Kyuquot and more.” The study will analyze how water clarity, salinity, temperature and various marine conditions affect kelp growth. It will look at

regional production performance, commercial-scale infrastructure and operating needs, as well as the market potential for Saccharina (sugar) kelp grown at salmon farms along British C olumbia’s coast. If successful, the study could broaden the commercial viability of B.C.grown kelp for food, vitamin-rich pharmaceuticals and natural cosmetics. In 2015, the U.S.-based Ocean Sciences National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota estimated the global value of primary and intermediate seaweed products at $10 billion a year. More information on Cross’ work can be found in a recently published feature in the MacLeans 2016 Colleges Guide, which is on news stands now, or at nic.bc.ca/research

he Campbell River and District Division of Family Practice has launched Year Two of “FETCH,” a community web-based resource that helps the public and health care providers access comprehensive information about community health and social services in the region. FETCH (For Everything That’s Community Health) is an online, public, user-friendly, searchable website at: campbellriver.fetchbc. ca. Starting Feb. 12, Shaw’s Ch. 4 will air a feature on this valuable community resource. FETCH Coordinator Julie Collis says: “The FETCH website is an easy, searchable database with valuable information on services for seniors, youths, children, early years, first nations, mental health and substance use.” Fetch, launched last summer, lists more than 235 health and social services and community resources. There were more than 150,000 visits to the website as of January 31st, about 22,000

Life drawing sessions begin at Art Gallery Feb. 16 Artists take note: Life Drawing sessions at the Campbell River Art Gallery begin Tuesday, February 16 at 7 p.m. for six weekly sessions. Life Drawing sessions are open to those who wish to practice drawing the human figure in a group setting. There will be no instruction – instead it’s an opportunity to draw a live model in a variety of poses in the company of other artists. Easels and tables are provided, but bring your choice of drawing or painting materials and the Gallery will provide the model. Poses will be timed, beginning with a few short warm-ups, then transitioning to longer poses. Pre-pay for six sessions prior to the start date or

about mental health and substance use services, early years’ programs, home care support, services for First Nations peoples and more. When the site was being developed the Division heard that heal th care providers did not always know about support services that could benefit their patients. It also realized that navigating these services could be difficult for the public. “FETCH aims

to improve the patients’ experience of navigating the system, and to con-

tribute to meeting their overall health needs,” Collis says.

What does truth and reconciliation with indigenous peoples entail?

Recently the Truth and Reconciliation Commission concluded its work by publishing a report which the authors believe reveals the truth about the residential school system and its impact on First Nations people and the broader society. It concludes with 94 calls to action which can act as a guide to healing the harm done and to transforming how indigenous and settler peoples relate to each other and how to live constructively together in this land. Indeed, the new federal government has stated it wishes to establish a new relationship with Indigenous Peoples, and that it will implement all of the recommendations.

Casey ‘brakes’ into national spotlight

A

t the Karate Canada National Championships at the Richmond Oval, Karate BC hosted teams from all provinces, the largest coming from Quebec, B.C. and Ontario. With Karate now becoming an Olympic Sport for 2020 Tokyo, this event will be an Olympic trial event in the near future. The quality of BC athletes has improved greatly in the past several years with the anticipation of being included in the Olympics. Several Athletes from the Campbell River Shito Ryu Karate Club competed at these nationals on the Jan. 30 weekend. Locals Valerie Doyon and Casey Brake competed over the three-day event. Doyon, now residing and going to university in Ontario, finally finished her goal of winning a national championship after five tries. She won her U21 under 68 KG kumite event in style and later placed silver in the women’s event under 68 KG kumite. Doyon recently attended the World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia this past November and previously the Pan American championships in Bolivia. Fifteen-year-old Brake challenged the 16/17 are group and was a standout in her division of 13, winning all four matches and only

allowing one point to be scored on her through all four matches. She had aspirations of making the Canadian team and wanted to go to the Pan American Championships but would have aged out if she didn’t challenge up, as it turned out she made the right decision. Brake has been preparing for this event for the last year after competing at the 2015 nationals and learning how much

preparation she needed to succeed. She had to go through the Vancouver Island Championships and then provincials and then on to the final selection of the BC team. Once she made Team B.C. she was on her way to compete at nationals. “Casey put her goal of being national champion on the whiteboard at the club at the beginning of 2015 and its remained ■ ■ ■ ■

up there to date,” said Club Sensei and head coach Roy Tippenhauer. “Casey does things in a non-assuming way and prefers to let her results speak for herself. I have coached her since she was five and she was always a very coachable athlete.” Brake will now be eligible to train with Team Canada and will possibly be selected to attend the Pan American Championships.

“Both of our girls have put in a tremendous amount of work to get to this stage in their competitive career and I want to congratulate both of them,” Tippenhaur said. 16-year-old Seals goalie steps into breach for the storm Mark Berry Special to the Mirror

In the past four weeks, the Campbell River Storm have been riddled by injuries but they have found a way to pick up points and are undefeated in their last 15 games. On Saturday night, with one starting goalie already out of the line-up, Riley Welyk received a devastating hit that sent him to the hospital for stitches. A/P Jaydlin Spooner got her first taste of Junior hockey and played almost two full periods. “I was a little nervous but I calmed myself down and focussed,” said the 16 year old Midget player from the VI Seals,

adding, “I told myself that the first couple of saves are huge in a game so I just saved them.” Despite conceding two goals, the 5’7”, 140 pound, netminder was solid, stopping some point blank shots and staring down Glacier Kings sniper Brandon McReynolds on a second period breakaway. A big contingent of Storm fans made the trip to Courtenay and were very vocal in their support as were her teammates who virtually shut the Kings down in the final 25 minutes. Spooner picked up the win, was named 1st star and received the game’s “Golden Shovel” awarded by the Storm team to their standout

player. General Manager and Head Coach, Lee Stone, said following the game, “It’s pretty special, I get to help with that Seals team, see how hard she works and see how successful she is at that level. For her to get the opportunity, come in and not just play but make some big, big, saves in the 2nd period is incredible.” Colin Blake was brilliant on Saturday picking up the hat-trick and contributing all weekend long. The tricky forward accounted for 7 points over the weekend (5 goals, 2 assists). On Friday, the Storm were on the road in Saanich and beat the Braves 5-4 in overtime.

Austin Steger scored the winner on an end to end rush at 2:52 of the extra frame. On Monday, they were once again at the Comox

the tone by making a big stop early. With so many key players out of the line-up, the Red and Black are scoring by committee; seven

Cermaq City wave FC earn promotion to Div 1

FRIDAY, FEBRIUARY WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2016 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR | 31

Cermaq City Wave FC will play in the VISL (Vancouver Island Soccer League) Division 1 next season after securing a crucial win over Lakehill on Saturday afternoon. The game played on the Robron turf with the sun shining and a great crowd saw a comprehensive 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Wyatt Bryce, Pete McWilliams and Eddie Lawson. Lakehill travelled to Campbell River knowing a win would put them in the battle for the top spot but it seemed apparent from the start that Cermaq had the stronger squad out on the day. Cermaq started strongly and Lakehill were content to give up defend deep and look to pounce with their counter attacks. The home team spent most of the game in the Lakehill half but some brave defending kept the game in the balance. Wyatt Bryce was able to get the game opener after 21 minutes calmly finishing after a goal mouth scramble. Just before half time Pete McWilliams got the second and the relief was apparent for all to see. Lakehill were

up for the battle though and within two minutes of the second half starting the game was 2-1. For a few minutes after the nerves of the local players was obvious. However this wasn’t to last long and soon Cermaq had taken control of the game. Numerous chances came and went but after 72 minutes Eddie Lawson slotted calmly past the keeper to reassert the two goal cushion. Again more chances were created but no further goals were to be added. The result has given Cermaq a certain promotion spot. The local side have a lead of six points with two games to go and with a goal difference of plus 17 over their nearest rivals the title of Champions should be officially acknowledged when they complete their last two games. Next Saturday the team travel to Layritz Park, Victoria where they play Prospect Lake at 4pm. Prospect Lake need two more points from their remaining two games to secure the second promotion spot. This should ensure another very competitive game.

It has been a fairy tale few years for Mens soccer in Campbell River. The last time the town boasted a Division one side was 1988-89 season when a proud run from the Campbell River Strikers ended in relegation. Since that time it has been the Golden Wings who have flown the flag for Mens Soccer in the VISL. Led by Andy Puglas the team worked hard for many years to get into the top division. Their highlight was likely when they won the George Pearkes Cup. In the season of 2013-14 our local Masters club decided to develop a Mens team to compliment and extend the opportunities for Soccer in Campbell River. It proved a huge success and they won

a Division Four title in their first year. Meanwhile the Golden Wings were playing their soccer in Division Three. The catalyst for the success the town is now witnessing came when the two teams joined together for the season 2014-15 and came under the umbrella of the CR Masters as Cermaq City Wave FC. The team name saw the word “Wave” added to it in honour of the team that once graced the Division one league back in the 1980’s. The amal-

Other types of fraud are less obvious. Fraud like this includes exaggerating the extent of an injury, misrepresenting a previous medical condition or slanting the situation when reporting a claim. It’s not unheard of for people to embellish their claim by including vehicle damage unrelated to the crash, or to claim they can’t work when they’re actually back on the job. These tactics may not make the news, but the costs add up and come out of all of our pockets – we all end up paying for those who cheat the system.

Fraudulent claims take a toll on B.C. drivers
