A Valentine’s gift from the heart By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Amie MacNeil is working on a big gift from her heart to the Canadian Blood Service this Valentine’s Day weekend. She is on a drive to recruit 129 blood donors to “pay forward” as a way of giving thanks for the 129 units of blood she received in emergency surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital on December 7, 2009. Amie, a young wife and mother of two boys in Aldergrove, survived a near-death experience while delivering her son Jacob that day just over six years ago. Jacob was delivered alive and healthy by C-section. However, immediately after delivering Jacob, Amie began hemorrhaging. The RCH medical team went into action to staunch the bleeding with medications, procedures and transfusions but Amie’s condition kept worsening, resulting in her having three cardiac arrests on the operating table. An emergency hysterectomy finally stopped the bleeding and physicians were able to stabilize her condition. She was put into an induced coma and spent the next 12 days unconscious in the intensive care unit. After she awoke she spent another 12 days in the hospital in recovery and came home on December 30. “I had to learn to walk again,” said Amie. “But I am so lucky to be alive.” During those critical five hours in

the operating room Amie received 129 units of blood, an amount that still surprises her to this day. “I thought maybe 40 units, but the hospital told me it was 129 units, give or take a couple of units.” This is her inspiration for her personal pledge to the Canadian Blood Service to recruit 129 blood donors. To this end she started a Facebook page called “Amie MacNeil’s Blood Drive - 129 reasons to give” which currently stands at 320 members (see: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/194445937567800/). The Facebook page has generated a lot of interest and commitments from at least 26 persons to donate a unit of blood each at this Saturday’s blood donor clinic in Aldergrove. “The Aldergrove clinic is almost filled with appointments, but I’m also campaigning for clinics in Langley and Abbotsford this month and have pledges for those too,” said Amie. “And I’ve noticed that a lot of the donors are first time donors; I consider it a real victory that I’m raising awareness of the importance of donating blood.” Amie is practicing what she preaches too. She, along with her husband Todd and mother Darlene, kickstarted the drive in December by donating a unit of blood each. Amie will also be at this Saturday’s clinic, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 13 at Aldergrove Secondary school, where she will donate another unit of blood and will stay to be on hand to greet her recruits during the day.

Aldergrove mother Amie MacNeil is recruiting 129 blood donors to “pay back” the Canadian Blood Service for the 129 units she received in a life-saving operation in 2009. The clinic visits Aldergrove every two months, with the next one set for April 9, but Amie notes that clinics are more frequent in the bigger centres of Langley and Abbotsford. Blood donors who wish to sup-

port her campaign should contact Amie via Facebook (or email to 129reasonstogive@gmail.com) and she will help register their appointments at the blood donor clinics of their choice.

“It’s such a big number, 129 people, it’s daunting,” said Amie. “But if I can convince people how easy it is — it takes under an hour — and how important it is in helping to save lives, it’s worth it.”

U.S. border guards allowed mother to abduct her children By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

A Langley woman managed to take her four children across the border into the U.S. at the Aldergrove crossing despite a B.C. court order banning her from taking them out of the province. A just-released Abbotsford Provincial Court written judgment shows the woman was allowed to cross the line in September, 2014 even though she told the U.S. author-

ities at the border about the nonremoval order, and even though the father of the children discovered the attempted removal and went to the border crossing. “He was able to see them (the children) across a counter, but was not allowed to speak to them,” Judge Kenneth Skilnick wrote. “He watched them leave with the (mother).” Because the woman was an American citizen and her Canadianborn children have dual citizenship,

the United States Homeland Security officers “came to the conclusion that they had no grounds to prevent (them) from entering into the United States.” After the mother and children got past the border, they spent several weeks on the road, staying in hotels and homeless shelters, before arriving at a relative’s home in North Carolina, the decision said. When the father learned where they were staying and tried to follow

them more than a month later, he was detained by U.S. Homeland Security officers and almost missed his flight to North Carolina, the judge noted. However, the father managed to get a court order from an American judge to return his children, and “with the assistance of local police officers,” took them home to Canada. The details of the story were recounted during a five-day hearing when the mother applied for an order that would give her custody of

the children and allow them to live in Washington state. Judge Skilnick denied the application, noting the mother “has demonstrated an unwillingness to follow (court) orders” and “an unwillingness to accept the conclusions of police, doctors, social workers, close friends and family, where those views do not accord with her own.” The judgment was posted on the Provincial Court website, with names of the parents and children removed.

TWO WAYS TO SUPPORT A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR KIDS

Refugees to arrive by end of month By TYLER OLSEN Aldergrove Star

Between 20 and 25 refugee families from Syria are expected to arrive in Abbotsford by the end of the month. The refugees will be sponsored by the federal government, and there is “tremendous energy” from locals laying the groundwork for their arrival, according to Manpreet Grewal, Abbotsford Community Services’ director of multicultural and immigrant integration services. The refugees – whose number could exceed 100 – are set to arrive here on Feb. 22 and will be housed in the shortterm in a local hotel while homes in the city are found. While organizers don’t yet have specific information about many of those who will be arriving, they will all be Syrians currently housed in camps in Jordan,

Turkey and Lebanon. Only a few are expected to speak English, and most will be children under the age of 17. “This will become their community,” said Grewal. A variety of agencies have spent the last several months preparing to welcome the refugees, but she said much remains to be done – including finding permanent housing – and the community’s help will be needed to help the families integrate into Abbotsford, she said. Preparation began several months ago, with service workers first consulting with clients from the Middle East about the services and assistance the families might need once they arrive. That was followed by a meeting with stakeholders, which saw, among other services offered, doctors step up to provide help. And in late January, the

While Abbotsford Community Services is leading the local effort, the arrival of the refugees in British Columbia is being co-ordinated by the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. In January, the organization had to pause ongoing arrival of refugees because of a lack of housing in the Vancouver area. The refugees won’t be the first to arrive in Abbotsford from Syria, though. Last Friday, a family sponsored through the blended visa-office referral initiative (BVOR) by the Interfaith Refugee Project arrived in the city. Other groups are also raising money to sponsor families through the BVOR, which provides for some government funding.

Consultations on school reconfiguration close By FRANK BUCHOLTZ

The first round of public consultations on a proposal to reconfigure six rural Abbotsford schools is now complete, with plans in the works for a second set of meetings. The school district is proposing that Grade 6 and 7 students from Barrowtown, Upper Sumas, Aberdeen, Ross, Bradner and Mount Lehman elementaries go to middle schools, beginning in September. All other Grade 6 and 7 students in the school district already attend middle school. The final decision on reconfiguration will be made by the board of

education at its Feb. 23 meeting. The proposal is driven by both educational and enrolment concerns, according to superintendent Kevin Godden. Students in the two highest grades at the six schools do not receive the full benefit of middle schools, attending only in Grade 8. Godden said middle schools help to prepare students more fully for secondary school, and a three-year transition period is far better than one year. But the plan has met substantial opposition from parents, who say the Grade 6 and 7 students contribute substantially to school life and help

younger siblings. Bradner parents have voiced concern that the move would pose a threat to the annual May Day celebrations, which are organized by parents and prominently feature Grade 6 and 7 students. The proposal would also alter middle school catchment areas, which has also triggered concern among some parents. A Facebook group dedicated to fighting the changes, Save our K-7 Schools, currently has more than 400 members. Godden said the district is striving to maximize the use of all its schools. One of the six schools is currently over capacity, one is well under,

and the other four are near their capacities. Meanwhile, W.A. Fraser middle school is well above its capacity, while Abbotsford Middle is near capacity and Eugene Reimer middle school is well below its capacity. These enrolment numbers also affect the five secondary schools. “The board has responsibility for 50 school sites,” Godden said. “They are all intimately connected. Rural schools are not disconnected from the rest of the district. We need to be good stewards of the public purse. We need to be accountable to taxpayers to make sure all the money spent on school facilities is put to good use.” He noted that, for example, the province will not put money forward to seismically upgrade schools unless they are

at 95 per cent or better capacity. While this is not as crucial in Abbotsford as in Vancouver, where there are many older schools with low enrolments, there have been several seismic projects underway in recent years. Yale Secondary is currently being seismically upgraded. Godden said there has been good participation and thoughtful suggestions in the discussions over the past month. The district is now scheduling follow-up meetings at which parents and community members will be given a summary of all ideas that were brought forward, and which of the alternatives district staff deem as feasible. Those will be included in a report to the board which trustees will consider as they prepare for the Feb. 23 meeting.

Virtually every adult member of the Kwantlen First Nation in Langley Township has a parent or grandparent who was forcibly removed from their families and sent to Lower Mainland residential schools. “Overwhelmingly, the majority of our Kwantlen elders are survivors of residential schools,” said Tumia Knott, president of the Seyem’ Qwantlen Business Group. “The legacy of residential schools are profound and affect our community today.” Knott appeared before Township Council with a delegation from the Kwantlen First Nation to express support for a proposed municipal Truth and Reconciliation Task Force. The idea of a municipal initiative comes after the final report from the federal Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). The TRC was created to document and preserve the experiences of school survivors after the federal government negotiated a $2 billion Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement to compensate 80,000 living residential students who suffered “sexual or serious physical abuses, or other abuses that caused serious psychological effects.” In Langley Township, brothers and sisters were not only removed from their families against their will, but they were separated and sent to different schools. “One sibling would go to one school, one would go to another,” Knott said. From flight school to prime farmland In December I wrote about the history of Abbotsford Airport and its genesis as an active air force training centre from its construction in 1943 through to the end of WWII in 1945. There is, however, an addendum to that story. There was a second air force airport in our community, long gone now, but in its day in the mid-1940s it was as active as the main field we now know as YXX. That main field was used as a bomber training centre, with large fourengined Liberators occupying the large triangular runways. The second airport, known then as 24 EFTS (Elementary Flight Training School), was the domain of the singleengine two-seat Fairchild Cornell. In those, pilots learned to fly, presumably to later transition to the Liberators and perhaps other aircraft in the RCAF. Abbotsford, by the way, was a coveted location by pilots for its mild weather and dramatic scenery. This, however, is not so much a story about the aircraft and pilot training as it is about the location of 24 EFTS and its unique history tied to Sumas Prairie. I recall seeing private aircraft, and possibly crop dusters, flying in and out of the airstrip in the late 1960s and 1970s when the land it sat on was owned by Buckerfields Farms. By then, the pavement that gave smooth take-offs and landings for the Cornells was gone, removed when the RCAF decommissioned the site in 1945. But while I remember seeing planes on the prairie, it was a friend of one

Aside from providing me with a vast amount of information that is far too lengthy to include here, Michael shared with me the only known photograph, taken by Bud Nugent sometime between October 1943 and July 1944, of 24 EFTS as an active pilot training centre. Of course, I have to note here that had the Sumas Prairie flight centre been contemplated a mere 20 years prior, the air force would have needed flying boats since the vast Sumas Lake wasn’t fully drained until about 1924. Not only that, but the biting hordes of mosquitoes would have made life intolerable for any flight trainees. Now some 70 years later, the land that was beneath the lake, and on which was located 24 EFTS, is some of the best crop and farmland in Canada, if not the world.

Editor: “Township tax increase set at nearly four percent?” Is this council out of their collective minds? The Canadian and B.C. economy is in a shambles and these totally-out-oftouch-with-reality elected airheads have the unmitigated gall to raise our property taxes by well over three times the cost of living increases we got on our Provincial and Federal pensions — 1.2 per cent. Maybe they missed the B.C. Assessment average increase for Langley Township of around 8 per cent? Or maybe they are so out of touch with their constituents that they think we won’t object? It is time to let these elitists know enough is enough! Win Bromley, a Langley Township resident for 40 years,

Name a volunteer Editor: I was very pleased to see the letter in The Aldergrove Star seeking nominations for this year’s Flowerdew and Arnason Awards. As a previous nominee, I know what an honour it is to be nominated for such a prestigious award. As an active volunteer in our community, I also know first hand the number of volunteers required to make any event successful. In Langley, our volunteer base is incredible and I’ve had the privilege of working with many of them. I also know, there are a lot of people whose names could be brought forward to be recognized for their volunteerism in the Township of Langley. I sincerely encourage everyone to take some time out of their busy schedules to put together a nomination package to recognize the dedicated volunteer or volunteer duo they know for one of these two awards. Deadline is Friday, February 12 and the nomination application is on line on the Township of Langley website. Michael Jackstien, Langley

Shadow flipping of homes to be probed By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

An investigation has been ordered into allegations some Vancouver-area real estate agents and allied speculators engage in shadow flipping where they insert themselves as middlemen in property deals to exploit local sellers and offshore buyers. B.C. Superintendent of Real Estate Carolyn Rogers is to work with an advisory committee of the Real Estate Council of B.C. to tackle the issue. Contract assignments are legally allowed where the supposed home buyer doesn’t actually close the deal but sells the contract on to someone else. Standard assignment clauses can be invoked when a buyer is unable to close but finds another buyer rather than break the deal. But realtors who are aware of or party to a scheme to resell contracts without the knowledge of the seller and ultimate buyer may be in violation of their duty to act in their clients’ best interest. “We are deeply concerned,” the Real Estate Council of B.C. said in a statement that described its response as “an urgent matter.” It said the committee will probe whether assignment clauses are being used appropriately, and make recommendations within 60 days on ways to boost enforcement and oversight of licensees that fail to disclose their investment in properties. The real estate council is also urging anyone affected by the

practice to come forward so it proxies using assignments to can investigate and discipline any profit from the gap between typiagents found in breach of their cal local selling prices and what can be extracted from Chinese legislated duties. Business, said he doubts assignment flipping is a major force propelling the hot market, but more a symptom of it. Speculative flipping of assignments was common in the presale condo market several years ago when condo prices were rising fast. “The primary cause is prices are going up really quickly and sellers don’t know what their property is worth,” Sommerville said of the emergence of assignment resales in the detached house market. It’s unclear how much shadow flipping is happening, he said, but added the losers include the original sellers who could have got more, the ultimate buyer who overpays, governments who may lose out on taxes, and society in general if trust is lost in the system. “I think it’s important to take action on this,” Sommerville said. “It’s imperative that the real estate industry address issues that raise concerns about the ethical behaviour of their agents. A feeling that the property market is rigged I don’t think is a healthy thing.” He said potential reforms could include requirements to register assignments, to charge property transfer tax when they’re traded and to also charge the transfer tax on companies that hold property but currently can be traded without incurring the tax. – with files from Tom Fletcher

Putting words to love Aldergrove Star

Authors, poets and playwrights have been trying to capture love in words for thousands of years. Their work speaks to the enduring power of love across the ages of human history. Check out this collection of quotes about love from some of the world’s most famous romantics, from Shakespeare, who wrote 154 sonnets dealing with love, time, beauty and mortality, to famed Chilean poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda. Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. - Aristotle

Ask about our HIPPO KISSES

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. - Helen Keller Love does not dominate; it cultivates. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. - Lao Tzu

Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place. - Zora Neale Hurston

My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite. - William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Love is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. - Leo Tolstoy

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. - Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Love is like quicksilver in the hand. Leave the fingers open and it stays. Clutch it, and it darts away. - Dorothy Parker

Young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep-burning, unquenchable. - Henry Ward Beecher Age does not protect you from love. But love, to some extent, protects you from age. - Anais Nin

Love has no desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires; To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; And to bleed willingly and joyfully. - Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward in the same direction. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

What’s Special Tonight?

I have learned not to worry about love; but to honour its coming with all my heart. - Alice Walker I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; so I love you because I know no other way than this: where I does not exist nor you, so close that your hand on my chest is my hand, so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep. - Pablo Neruda, “Love Sonnet XVII”

Kodiaks topple Knights By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The Aldergrove Kodiaks skated to a 9-3 victory over the Langley Knights, Feb. 4 at George Preston Arena. The result puts the Kodiaks solidly in third place in the Harold Brittain conference with 47 points in 42 games (22-171-2). The Kodiaks are destined to meet arch-rivals, Abbotsford Pilots, in the first round of playoffs this month, while the top team Mission Outlaws will meet the Ridge Meadows Flames. The Langley Knights are eliminated from playoffs action this season. The Kodiaks opened the scoring late in the first period with a power play goal by Davin Padgham, assisted by Eric Callegari and Cameron Davitt. The Knights responded a minute later to tie it at 1-1 in the first period. Davitt scored early in the second, unassisted, and the Knights responded less than a minute later to even it up. However, the Kodiaks scored four more that period to take a 6-2 lead in the second. Scoring that period for the Kodiaks were Callegari (from Brandon Dolby and Spencer Unger), Davitt (from Nathan

Washington and Derian White), Unger (from Padgham and Callegari) and Ivan Vilcauskus (from Lucas Stratford and Elijah Vilio). The Kodiaks scored three more in a row in the third before the Knights scored their last goal, for the 9-3 outcome. Scoring for Aldergrove were Matt Oliver (from Kyle Bosko), Davitt (from Padgham) and White (from Davitt and Washington). The Kodiaks outshot the Knights 61-31 and first and third stars were Kodiaks Davitt and Callegari. HAWKS DOWN KODIAKS, 9-3 The Aldergrove Kodiaks started out strong against the visiting Delta Ice Hawks on Feb. 3, and had a late rally in the third period. However, a disappointing performance by the Kodiaks in the second period and a last-minute empty-netter by the Hawks sealed a 4-6 loss for the Kodiaks. The Kodiaks outshot the Hawks by a wide margin, 44-27, and outshot the Hawks in every period but just couldn’t find the back of the Hawks’ net on 40 of those shots. Aldergrove lead 2-0 within the first two minutes of the game, with goals from

Soccer Boys Right at Home

Lucas Stratford and Brandon Dolby, assisted by Davin Padgham and Kyle Bosko, and Spencer Unger and Padgham, respectively. The Hawks scored a pair in the last half of the first period, which sandwiched Stratford’s second goal, assisted by Eric Callegari. However, the Kodiaks 3-2 lead was eaten up by three unanswered goals for the Hawks in the second period, giving the Hawks a 5-3 lead. The Kodiaks finally mounted an allout offensive late in the third and were rewarded with a goal by Unger, from Callegari, to put them a mere goal away from taking the game into overtime. However, with a man-advantage by pulling keeper Dawson Rodin, the Kodiaks lost control of the puck and the Hawks struck with an empty-netter in the dying minute to take the 6-4 win. The Kodiaks were unable to score on any of their six power plays while the Hawks scored on one of four. Kodiaks’ Stratford was named the game’s third star. The Kodiaks final regular season games are Tuesday, Feb. 9 at Delta Ice Hawks and home on Wednesday, Feb. 10 versus the Richmond Sockeyes.

For the first time this season, the Langley Events Centre really was ‘their house.’ After a pair of disastrous home games, the Vancouver Stealth finally gave their fans reason to cheer with a convincing 15-7 victory over the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday night. The win improved Vancouver to 2-3 while Colorado fell to 4-2. In their previous two home contests, the Stealth managed a combined 12 goals. But Saturday night saw the team strike for seasonhigh goals.

Submissions are now open for CIVL-FM’s first-ever Fraser Valley Music Awards. Artists of all genres and ages are encouraged to submit their music to the FVMA jury by completing the submission form at civl.ca/fvma by March 31. Winners will be announced at the

inaugural FVMA gala in July. Winners – and in some cases, nominees – will receive a variety of free products and services, including recording studio time, media coverage, placement in summer music festivals, consultations with music industry experts and live show recordings. Events leading up to the main event include a Battle of the Bands

and music industry education workshops, in addition to the launch of a compilation album of Fraser Valley music. “In addition to superstars like Hedley or Carly Rae and various Juno and Polaris Prize nominees, a host of incredibly well-regarded Canadian musicians hail from the Valley,” said CIVL station manager Aaron Levy.
