One arrested; one suspect being sought in home invasion TRE VOR CR AWLEY
An arrest has been made by Cranbrook RCMP following a recent home invasion, however, another arrest warrant has been issued for a second suspect believed to be involved in the incident. On Thursday, Cranbrook RCMP requested the public’s assistance in locating Michael Andres Salvador-Bejarano, a 24-year-old male believed to be in the Calgary area. Salvador-Bejarano is described as 165 centimetres (5’5”) and 63 kilograms (139 lbs), with black hair and brown eyes.

Residents of Kimberley have become familiar with the bylaw prohibiting the feeding of deer within the city and evidence suggests that it has worked. Far fewer people are feeding deer than there were four or five years ago. However, if you come across bait stations with hay in some local green spaces in
the next week or so, do not be alarmed — no one is breaking the law. The temporary bait stations are part of the translocation trial project, which is about to begin in the East Kootenay. Finding happy trails in the backcountry
Backcountry Horseman promote, preserve and expand on extensive local trail networks Tre vor Cr awley
I
t’s no secret that the East Kootenays is a jewel for backcountry recreation. From hiking, to biking and everything in between, there are tons of options to head out to explore new and old trails or hit the nearby mountain ranges. You can add the newly-formed East Kootenay chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen of B.C. to the list of groups that can be found in the outdoors with their equine companions, as they strive to promote, preserve and expand on the extensive trail network throughout the region. The province-wide organization, which is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this year, opened a regional chapter a year ago to advocate for recreational backcountry issues in the East Kootenay. Headed up by Brian Marriott, the EK chapter, which boasts roughly 30 members, meets once a month for meetings and an activity—usually a ride with their four-legged partners. Marriott stresses that the Backcountry Horsemen of B.C. wants to ensure that the the wilderness—and the trail networks throughout the East Kootenay and the province—remains open for all users, not just equine riders. “It’s kind of a share the trail concept, and that’s what the Backcountry Horsemen are all about, is to keep wilderness open to equine and trails open to all non-motorized, hikers, bikers, that sort of thing,” Marriott said. And when the spring and summer hit—even if it’s not members of the BCHBC—there are equine riders who are always on their horses throughout the area. “We’re all riding on a constant basis. It’s amazing…I know there’s quite a group around that Wardner area that ride almost daily out there, either along the river or out through the Remparts, or up through the Pickerings and stuff like that,” Marriott said. “People here, especially in spring breaks and summer holidays and those who are retired, are constantly riding.” While the long rides don’t happen in the winter, the group has recently headed out to Wardner to a member’s property and hitched up the horses to some sleighs for sleigh-riding. Other trips in the spring, summer and fall have included rides
into Baldy Lake, an overnight venture to Dewar Hot Springs and a poker ride out in Bull River. Marriott touts the rugged beauty and the access to backcountry terrain as a major draw for people who wish to explore the wilderness by horseback. It’s not like some other parts of the province, where wilderness areas are regulated, he added. “We’re very fortunate, too, in that we’re not hampered by some of the restrictions put on by other areas, as far as not being able to use trails or going out into the bush,” Marriott said. “I don’t even have to trailer; I can ride out the back end of my property into 100,000 acres and not see anybody. “But you get down into the Interior, or the Okanagan or the Island, all those people, they get to ride in groomed areas, where it’s kind of restricted as to what you can do, when you can do it, and how you can do it.” Though the group is newly formed in the East Kootenay, the provincial body of the BCHBC is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this year, and has a long history of contributing to trail building efforts in chapters around B.C. Marriott noted that in Manning Provincial Park, just outside Hope in the Lower Mainland, has seen some work by the BCHBC in trail-building, as well as the construction of a barn and corrals. “We do a lot of work as far as maintaining trails in certain areas, whether it’s here in the East Kootenays or in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island or up around Terrace or in the Okanagan,” Marriott said. Closer to home, the group has previously done some work along the Trans-Canada Trail in conjunction with Al Skucas and Trails BC and is hoping to pitch in on some more projects in the future, whether they be kiosks, washrooms or trail signage. “It’s not going to happen overnight,” Marriott said. “Logistically, we have to be solid in how we get the material to these areas and how we’re going to secure them, but we’re looking at stuff up in Dewar Hot Springs and we’re also looking at some stuff at Top of the World [Provincial Park]. “It all just takes time. We don’t have a projected plan for the next year, two years, five years kind of thing, but that’s kind of the areas that we’re looking at.” The group meets once a month on the third Tuesday of every month at the Heritage Inn for roughly an hour to talk about and plan upcoming rides or trail building projects. The arrest, and issue of a warrant, were made following a home invasion in the 200 and 500 block of 20th Ave. South where a 35-year-old male was shot on early hours of Feb. 4. Initial reports indicated that four unknown males had forced their way into the home, assaulted several occupants of the house and shot one person. The investigation led to Blairmore, Alberta, where two males arrived at the Crowsnest
Pass Hospital the same day, one of which was suffering from a gunshot wound. One male was arrested after a search of a vehicle revealed evidence in connection with the shooting in Cranbrook, including two handguns. Cranbrook RCMP members have been working with partner agencies in both B.C. and Alberta to determine all involved in the shooting incident, says S/Sgt. Hector Lee, the Cranbrook detachment commander. “This is a clear example of the dedication your local RCMP members exhibit on a regular basis; in this particular matter, the members of the General Investigation Section and the Crime Reduction Unit,”
said Lee. “These types of serious incidents are not typical in the Cranbrook area. The GPS collars will report the does location twice per day, and the study will determine mortality rates, distance travelled, and home ranges. Sites selected for darting are larger green spaces away from private property. The City asks you to avoid these areas if you come across them, especially while walking dogs. The public can expect to see field crews with low-velocity dart guns in these areas while capture work is in progress. In order to reduce the stress on the captured deer, the City requests that the public avoid altogether the deer and the translocation crew. “The issues associated with urban deer are not going to go away” states Mayor Don McCormick. “Municipalities have limited options for dealing with these issues, and translocation seems to be one option that is supported by all interest groups. If successful, translocation will offer far more flexibility than a cull and be a welcome addition to our toolkit.” City Council received a year-end report from the Urban Deer Committee this week, which outlines what has worked and the way forward in dealing with deer in the community. The Way it Was Saloon keepers of the old west

I have frequently been asked the question, “Why do your early day stories have such a bearing on saloons?” Well, to be frank, the saloon in the early day of the west was not altogether for booze, as most business transactions were done there too. It was kind of a meeting place for everyone, in addition to the saloon proper, there was what they called the sitting room, or lounge room, with its huge pot-bellied stove, where we could always drop in and get warmed up when necessary. I noticed though, that it was always conveniently near the bar so that when a “live one” came in, he could, without much trouble, just come to the door and beckon to the boys assembled around the good old “pot bellied heater”. I have often wondered how the saloon keepers made any money at all, as they did not allot it out as of today. Instead, they passed the bottle and glass to the customers, who would, amongst them, call for perhaps 10 different brands of “poison” as we called it in those days and they poured it themselves. Only on rare occasion did I ever see this privilege abused. When I said he passed the bottle, I mean just that, for he could slide that bottle to the farthest customer standing at the 15 foot mahogany counter and like a good curler, he would put it right on the button. These guys, barkeepers as we call them today, had to be professional mixologists before they obtained the job in those days. There were no waiters. Everyone stood up to the mahogany when taking a drink, or calling for a “Stonewall Jackson” or a packet of “Sweet Caporals”, popular smoke of that era when “Give My Regards To Leicester Square” was a popular tune.
Don’t think for a minute that the saloons were a rendezvous for gangsters. Nothing of the kind. It was, where i lived, at Marysville, a smelter town in B.C., a meeting place for everyone over 21 years of age. There was the occasional “rough house”, as can be expected where liquor or beer is sold. But the ordinary Labourer stood up to the mahogany with judges, doctors, lawyers, M.P.’s, bankers and butchers. In the early days of the Sullivan Mine, without which there never would have been a Kimberley or Marysville, there were no rich mining magnets. Instead many people went broke. I worked for the first outfit that operated the Sullivan – Col. Ridpath, Senator Turner and associates, of Spokane. They were known as the Sullivan Group Mining Co. Tak-
ing over from them was the Fort Steele Mining and Smelting Co., whicvh produced little results. Next were the Guggenheims, the result of which was the closing down of both Sullivan Mine and Marysville Smelter in 1908. There were no recreation halls then, as have the present day C.M. & S. Company, who took over in 1910. When we left our fireside and comforts of home the saloon was our meeting place, whether to transact business or exchange friendly conversations. A lively stable in connection with the saloon provided the telephone. At that time there were only two phones in Marysville, the Central Hotel and the Falls View Hotel, and one at Kimberley’s North Star Hotel. All mining business was dealt with by C.P.R.
telegraph. Another thing saloon keepers did was to winter, with bed and board, unfortunates who were unemployed, later finding them a job with government road crews. The road superintendent was merely a figure-head, being told by saloon keepers who was going to work and where. The saloon keepers had many good points. In those days I don’t know just what we would have done but for their generosity. They were first to come to aid in time of trouble. I have written many stories of trappers and prospectors whom I would never have met if it had not been for the saloon, where as I said before, business was done, jobs found for unemployed, aid for the needy. I have very pleasant memories of the Wild West’s saloon days.

It took a while but Kimberley’s official New Years Baby has been tracked down. His name is Preston Cooper Simkins, born January 15th at 2:44am and weighed 7lbs 4oz. His Parents are Trevor Simkins and Hayley Simkins from Kimberley. Preston is their first baby and they are thrilled with his arrival.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is renewing a Pest Management Plan and will submit the plan for approval under the Integrated Pest Management Act. This Plan will describe a Mosquito Control Program using Integrated Pest Management, including the use of insecticides. Purpose: Mosquito Control for the purpose of nuisance control. Application Method: Treatment of mosquito larva development sites by hand and helicopter application. Location: Within the RDEK’s existing Mosquito Extended Service Area which includes the Wasa, TaTa Creek, and Skookumchuk areas north of Fort Steele along the Kootenay River. Pesticide: Yearly totals up to, but not exceeding: • 1000 ha with Aquabac (PCP No. 26863) (Bacillus thuringiensis var israeliensis) • 1000 ha with Vectobac 200 G (PCP No. 19466) (Bacillus thuringiensis var israeliensis) A selection of insecticides has been chosen to increase the ability to target mosquito populations in the most environmentally responsible method possible. All products listed are registered in Canada for the intended use. Aquabac and Vectobac have been chosen to control larval mosquitoes in their development sites. The RDEK will not treat the total area of all the products listed above, but will choose the best method to treat with the least environmental impact. ‘Religion for Atheists:’ Building Community I’ve
written about this before, but it seemed a good time to reflect on this again. A few years ago, I read a fascinating book called “Religion for Atheists: a Non–Believer’s Guide to the Uses of Religion.” It was written by French philosopher Alain de Botton, who wrote this book because he believes that while religions may not be true, they still have an enduring value in our world. In his book, he begins by noting that many have tried to prove the non–existence of God. “Tough–minded critics of religion have found much pleasure in laying bare the idiocy of believers in remorseless detail, finishing only when they felt they had shown up their enemies as thorough–going simpletons or maniacs.” On his website, de Botton claims that this debate has become boring. He is a committed atheist, but goes on to assert that religions still have some very important things to teach the secular world. “The premise of this book is that it must be possible to remain a committed atheist and nevertheless find religions sporadically useful, interesting and consoling.” The idea intrigued me. Perhaps here was a way in which we could build some common ground for a fruitful conversation about differing worldviews and the choices we make on the basis of our worldview. Some of the pre–publication advertising indicated that de Botton considered such things as art and music and architecture to be among the lasting legacy of reli-
gions to the world. There can’t be much debate about that. Religions of all kinds have enriched the world with beautiful creations in the arts. Western literature is filled with references to the Bible and the traditions of the Christian faith. Musical masterpieces based on the texts of Christian faith abound. One can’t go to an art museum without seeing works of art depicting Biblical scenes. Given this advance publicity, it came to me as quite a shock that the first thing de Botton mentions Rev. Yme as a useful and interesting legacy of religion is the Woensdregt sense of community. “One of the losses modern society feels most keenly is that of a sense of community.” That’s quite an ironic statement, given the amount of interest that’s being paid to staying connected, whether it be via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or any of the other social networking sites. But as William Powers argues in his book “Hamlet’s Blackberry”, our technological connectivity is very shallow. We may be connected far and wide, but we have no real sense of community despite that connectedness. De Botton similarly argues that religion helps to foster a deeper sense of community. He uses worship as an analogy, particularly the Roman Catholic mass. “It marks off a piece of the earth, puts walls up around it and declares that within their parameters there will reign values utterly unlike those which hold sway in the world beyond, in the offices, gyms and living rooms of the city.”

Within those walls gathers a community of people who seek to know and be known. More important, the community that gathers is diverse. “Those in attendance tend not to be uniformly of the same age, race, profession or educational or income level; they are a random sampling of souls united only by their shared commitment to certain values.” A community like that breaks down social barriers in a way that no other kind of community does. We usually tend to gather only with those who are the same as us. But the kind of community fostered by religion is more diverse. The church has managed “to persuade monarchs and magnates to kneel down and abase themselves before the statue of a carpenter and to wash the feet of peasants, street sweepers and dispatch drivers.” We don’t do this in secular society, he argues, and we are the poorer for it. Secular people can learn from this practice; indeed we all need to learn from this, for our lives have become insular and unconnected. We have largely lost any deep sense of community, which has always been an important and enriching part of human life. In the rest of the book, he does the same kind of creative thinking around such subjects as Education, Kindness, Tenderness and Pessimism, as well as Art and Architecture. I am writing in response to a story published on February 4, 2016 entitled ‘Woman gets two years for driving through window’. Please note: Stacey Lundin was sentenced as follows: 1. 60 days intermittent prison term 2. 24 months driving suspension (three months already served, 21 months remaining). 3. One year probation. So she got two years, meaning two years of driving suspension, not two years in jail which some readers have thought. The article stated we were “not seriously injured.” Although we were not in ICU, our injuries have been serious. Our dog and I were both pinned under the vehicle in our beds. My traumatized dog suffered from chronic back pain and was euthanized eight months after the crash. Nineteen months after the crash I am still dealing with my injuries. My daughter was very narrowly missed by both the wall and the car which both landed mere centimetres from her while she was sleeping. She still suffers from psychological trauma from this event. This, in my opinion, is a very serious injury, and even worse than my painful and unpleasant physical injuries. Even though she wasn’t touched physically, my daughter’s injuries are deep, long-lasting, and unfortunately, very serious. One more clarification. After the car crashed through the window it plowed through the entire bedroom, over our bed, and it drove right into the kitchen. So “Woman gets 60 days in prison and 24 months of driving suspension for Blood Alcohol Content over .08 causing bodily harm after plowing over bed where family was sleeping” would be more accurate. Deer Debacle
In “Godfather III,” Al Pacino as Don Corleone said, “Just as I thought I was out of it, they just keep dragging me back into it.” This is where I now find myself; once again entering the great Deer Debacle. I was hoping that after the two night stalkers from up the valley were caught destroying deer traps and received what I thought was nothing but a mere slap on the wrist, the provincial government was finally going to own up to their stewardship over the deer. I should have known better. It seems to me that Foot Dragging 101 seems to be part of large government. I was a member of the Deer Committee for quite a while but it became obvious to me that the provincial government was just going to sit on the sidelines and hope that some magic wand would appear and with one swipe the issue would just disappear. Well, that’s not happening. On January 29, 2016, a letter to the editor submitted by William G. Hills shared the following. With due diligence, Mr. Hills searched out the record of Ms. White from ‘back East. He said, ‘I did not find great support for any of her endeavors. Ms. White failed four times in attempts for election in Toronto, and co-authored an animal rights bill listing animals as living property. That bill died in the Senate. She seems to be leader of a group that feel they speak for the deer. I like to think of these followers as ‘Deer Whisperers’. I think this person should just stay back East and look after her own backyard. We in the West are capable of looking after our own. There was mention of $25,000 coming this way to help us with our deer problem. Why not direct this money to pay for the dam-
aged traps and court costs? The provincial government was elected by a majority of votes, yet when a majority think a cull is necessary, they choose to ignore it. I just don’t get it. The government doesn’t even seem to listen to the people who work for them like the Conservations Officers and other informed professionals. However, they seem willing to listen to amateurs and just let them carry on with experiments, translocation, and of course the highly touted hazing. Those dogs are sheep dogs, not deer dogs. LOL I worked with Ron Kerr while I was on the deer committee and had nothing but respect for him and his fellow contractor for the cull. They were not involved for any monetary gain by any stretch of the imagination. These two men know more and respect wildlife more than all those that are against the cull put together. They understand the necessity of keeping the deer at a manageable number. Other communities are seeking out this type of expertise; and Ms. White, if you don’t think what they do doesn’t take something out of those men, you are sadly mistaken. Anytime you end the life of some creature, you leave a little of yourself. But there again, you have the hand wringers and the realists. It is likely that the inevitable cull will be put on hold. Oh, by the way, surprise, surprise, I actually happen to like deer. Bill Roberts Kimberley
Catholic Schools Week: Feb 14-20
As we reflect on the rich history of the Catholic faith in Cranbrook, we are taken back to 1899 when the first Catholic Church, St. Mary’s, was established in our downtown core. A Catholic school followed in 1914, which was later known as ‘10th Avenue School’, but closed a few years later and went on to become the old Cranbrook High School. A rectory followed in 1922 to provide living quarters for priests, and due to the growth of the congregation it was decided a larger church was required. Through the hard work and generosity of the founding people, 1927 saw the current version of St. Mary’s church constructed where it now stands. Once again, the people of the day recognized the value in having their own Catholic school and through the efforts of many strong local families, St. Mary’s School was established on its current location in 1965. The school has enjoyed a long standing reputation for excellence in Catholic education. Originally staffed and supported by various priests and nuns, the school has become a foundation for religious education in Cranbrook, with today’s families supporting the importance of teaching our faith in a secular world. Today’s school is staffed by devoted and passionate people that combine current pedagogy with many of the traditions and practices set by former staff such as the beloved ‘Sister Ralph’. The school continues to thrive and is proud to provide children with a solid foundation for academics and faith in a kind and safe environment. Thank you to everyone who has been part of St. Mary’s School throughout its history. UBC student looking for bobcat, lynx pics Tre vor Cr awley
A UBC student is asking East Kootenay residents to send him any recent pictures of bobcats or lynx for a project on mapping project on the habitats of both species. Lynx are found in boreal forests across Canada and Alaska, as well as in the mountain ranges extending south into Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. Bobcats, in contrast, are found in deserts and grasslands of the contiguous United States, as well as in southern Canada. TJ Gooliaff, a biologist in training at the UBC Okanagan campus, is hypoth-
esizing that bobcats are being pushed northwards and into higher elevations due to climate change, which is leading to earlier springs and lower snow levels in western North America. Gooliaff is looking for any kinds of photos of bobcats or lynx from trail cameras to conventional pictures along with location information as specific as possible, such as UTM or longitude/latitude coordinates. Barring that, any roads or landmarks, nearest town or watershed or Management Unit would be appreciated. Anyone with any photos can email them to Gooliaff at: tj.gooliaff@ubc.ca.

I’m going to go in and if you have the puck, I’m going to hit you. Hopefully I can get the crowd pumped up a bit.” All of that comes as welcome words to Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce, whose

And that’s reason enough for Kootenay Ice fans to be excited and intrigued. Sidaway and the Ice (9-41-4-0) welcome the Spokane Chiefs (26-214-2) to Western Financial Place for a 7 p.m. puck drop Friday evening. The Kootenay Ice have recalled 16-yearold forward Tanner Sidaway from the Westshore Wolves of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL). The 5-foot-11, 164pound product of Victoria arrived in Cranbrook Thursday afternoon in time for practice with the Ice at Western Financial Place and is slated to make his Western Hockey League debut Friday night against the Spokane Chiefs. “I’m very excited, it’s going to be a whole new experience, a whole new level of play,” Sidaway said Thursday. “Just getting out there to play at a whole new level is going to be really interesting and taking that next step is going to be really exciting.”
Sidaway is an intriguing prospect for a rebuilding Kootenay Ice club. Acquired as a part of the Jan. 3 trade that sent former Ice captain Luke Philp to the Red Deer Rebels, Sidaway was never selected in the WHL Bantam Draft, but signed a WHL standard player contract with the Rebels July 9, 2015. While time has allowed the shock of being dealt to wear off, Sidaway is excited to prove he belongs in the WHL. “You try to look at it in a positive way,” Sidaway said, reflecting on finding out he had been traded. “[The Ice] wouldn’t have made the trade without getting me. You look at it that way and say, ‘That means I’m important to them.’ I need to play the best I can be because this is where I want to go.

Dynamiters visit Spokane Braves before hosting Fernie Ghostriders Saturday

The Nelson Leafs did the Kimberley Dynamiters a favour earlier this week as they knocked off the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, all but ensuring the Nitros of the KIJHL’s Kootenay Conference title. What that equates to is home-ice advantage for the opening three rounds of the KIJHL post-season. All that remains for the Dynamiters (37-7-0-4) is to clinch the KIJHL’s overall league title, but that race remains a tight one with the Osoyoos Coyotes (36-9-1-1). The Dynamiters will get an opportunity to inch closer to that goal this weekend when they visit the Spokane Braves (8-35-0-4) Friday before returning home to host the Fernie Ghostriders (26-17-0-4) Saturday (7 p.m.) at the Kimberley Civic Centre. Head coach Jerry Bancks challenged his squad following a 4-2 home loss to the Ghostriders last Friday. He said the focus and
challenge remains the same heading into the second last weekend of the regular season. “If I’m one of the younger players…and I see older guys kind of putting in half an effort, but still getting out for every power play, it sends a negative message,” Bancks said. “They get confused as to what expectations are and I think we’ve had a bit of that lately.” The Dynamiters are expected to be without forward Austyn Moser this weekend, who Bancks said will serve a two-game suspension for a checking-from-behind major penalty incurred Monday at Fernie. That’s tough news for a team already shortstaffed due to injuries as captain Jason Richter (upper body, week to week) remains on the shelf, along with forward-turned-defenceman Trey Doell (hand). Doell skated this week and is close to a return, but remains day to day. While he was in the
lineup in Friday’s 4-2 loss to Fernie, defenceman Justin Meier didn’t see much ice time and was then shutdown for Saturday’s double-overtime win at Beaver Valley and Monday’s 2-0 road win over the Ghostriders. The rugged rearguard has been dealing with a lower body injury for some time now and playing at what Bancks’ characterized as 80 per cent just hasn’t worked. “It’s the same as with Richter,” Bancks said. “I’d like to get [Meier] to 100 per cent. We tried him at 80 per cent and it didn’t work. It’s up to physio when he’s ready to go again and we want to make sure we’re cautious.” Richter and Meier will be critical to any post-season push by the Dynamiters, which very well could begin with a seven-game, all-out war with the Ghostriders in the first round. Heading into the weekend, Fernie remains in third place in the Eddie Mountain Division, but the Colum-
bia Valley Rockies (2820-0-0) have pulled into a tie with the Ghostriders as each team sits with 56 points. With five games remaining on their slate, the Ghostriders have one game in hand on the Rockies, which plays into their favour as they try to avoid a first-round matchup with the high-powered Nitros. Unfortunately for Fernie, those five games see them face Kimberley twice, along with the Neil Murdoch Division-champion Nitehawks (31-10-3-3), making for tough sledding heading towards

NFL’s Raiders sign extension to remain in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. - Four weeks after being stymied in their effort to move to Los Angeles, the Raiders agreed to a one-year extension lease extension to remain at the Oakland Coliseum on Thursday. Raiders owner Mark Davis had been mulling multiple options to move his team since being passed over by the NFL’s other owners to relocate the Raiders to Southern California. The St. Louis Rams were approved to move to Los Angeles in January, while the San Diego Chargers have an option to join the Rams. The agreement with the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Joint Powers Authority guarantees that the Raiders will play the 2016 season in the same stadium they have called home since 1995. It also carries two one-year team options. The deal still needs approval of the Oakland City Council and Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

HAMILTON - The Flyin’ Hawaiian is a Hamilton Tiger-Cat. Veteran receiver/kick-returner Chad Owens agreed to a one-year deal with Hamilton on Thursday. The five-foot-nine, 180-pound Owens had spent the last six seasons with the Toronto Argonauts before becoming a free agent Tuesday. Owens, 33, is a four-time CFL all-star who in 2010 was named the league’s top special-teams performer before being named its outstanding player in 2012. That season he had 94 catches for 1,328 yards and six TDs while accumulating a record 3,840 all-purpose yards. Last year injuries limited Owens to just 13 games as he registered 55 catches for 570 yards and two touchdowns. But in Hamilton he’ll combine with Brandon (Speedy) Banks to potentially give the Ticats a dangerous 1-2 special-teams punch.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My only sibling has stopped speaking to me. My brother had a son 26 years ago. He claims he knew nothing about the child until I told him six months ago that he should take responsibility for his oldest son. We had words, and he texted me not to contact him, ever, and to have a great life. I did call and left a message wishing him and his wife a Merry Christmas, but I never heard back. He’s holding me responsible for “keeping a secret,” while I am quite sure he knew all along that he had a son out there. He said some nasty things directly to me and has told outright lies to other people about me. But Annie, he is my brother. Do I just go away? Or do I send him birthday wishes next month? -- Grieving Sister Dear Sister: You can send any kind of wishes you like, but we can’t promise he’ll respond. Are you sure he knew about this child? If no one had ever spoken of it before, it’s possible he was truly unaware and angry that you kept the secret. Or, if you mentioned the son in front of his wife, it’s possible that he didn’t want her to know, and reacted by claiming ignorance. And of course, he could simply be ashamed that he has not financially or emotionally supported his son and, like many guilt-ridden people, became defensive. You can try apologizing, sincerely, for bringing up a subject that he wasn’t prepared to deal with, and then ask him how you can make things better. You also can try going through his wife to see if she will act as an intermediary on your behalf. The rest, sorry to say, is up to him. Dear Annie: Every day I do word scrambles and “spot the six differences” puzzles with two great people. But now I’m annoyed and upset. One time -- just once -- I started the puzzles before they arrived and now they keep calling me “cheaty pants” and refuse to give me the newspaper until they have already started. I don’t know whether I should confront them about it or leave it be. I think they should be fair, not rude. I know I shouldn’t start the puzzles until they can be there, but sometimes I get so impatient with them. I think they should be nice about it, too. -- Very Frustrated Dear Frustrated: All of you should be nice, which means name-calling is offlimits and no one starts the puzzles before everyone shows up. We recommend that you make the first move to put things back on track: Apologize for your original faux pas and ask them to please stop rubbing it in your face so you can start fresh. But if they keep acting like the mean girls in high school, bring your own newspaper and then you can do your own puzzles in peace. Obituaries CAROL VIOLA WILSON 1940-2016
With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, the family announces the passing of Carol following a year long battle with cancer. Her positive attitude throughout the whole ordeal provided strength to all who knew her. Carol was born on Dec. 21, 1940 in Vancouver and lost her courageous battle in Cranbrook on Feb. 8, 2016. Carol was a strong, caring person who was known for her amazing knowledge of a variety of topics, earning her the nickname of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brittanicaâ&#x20AC;?. She had a love for animals, especially horses and dogs and for several years was involved with raising and showing dogs with the Cranbrook Kennel Club. It seems her love for animals grew out of the years she spent as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in rural Cranbrook. Carol was also hooked on golf. She loved the game and competed all over the province along with her many golf buddies. She became involved with the BC Golf Association and was a highly qualified course rater for many years, a passion she reluctantly gave up in 2014. Carol was a member of the Cranbrook Golf Club for over 40 years, spending many of those years as the Ladies Club rules and handicap person. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Cranbrook for over 25 years, and contributed substantially as a volunteer, taking on the role of bookkeeper for the past several years. Carol is survived by her loving partner of 17 years, Bill Brock; her son Steve (lnge) of Hope; her son Michael of Cranbrook; grandson Dylan Welsh and his mother Debbie Welsh of Vernon; her brother Lyle (Sharon) Norlander of Vancouver and his children Jacquie, Susan, Paul, Mike and John; her stepchildren Michael (Paula) of Campbell River, Patrick (Dawn) of Cranbrook, Lesa of Red Deer, Chris (Jeanne) of Cranbrook and stepgrandchildren Trent, James, Brandon, Aidan, Ashton and Hailey; her first husband Don Wilson of Cranbrook and niece Leslie. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernie and Viola, her infant daughter Marina Denise and her second husband Ron Gartside. There will be no memorial service at Carolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request but a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Carol can be made to the B.C. Cancer Agency or to the East Kootenay Hospital Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.

Scientists detect ripples in gravity Seth Borenstein Associated Press
It was just a tiny, almost imperceptible “chirp,” but it simultaneously opened humanity’s ears to the music of the cosmos and proved Einstein right again. In what is being hailed as one of the biggest eureka moments in the history of physics, scientists announced Thursday that they have finally detected gravitational waves, the ripples in the fabric of space and time that Einstein predicted a century ago. The news exhilarated astronomers and physicists. Because the evidence of gravitational waves is captured in audio form, the finding means astronomers will now be able to hear the soundtrack of the universe and listen as violent collisions reshape the cosmos. It will be like going from silent movies to talkies, they said. “Until this moment, we had our eyes on the sky and we couldn’t hear the music,” said Columbia University astrophysicist Szabolcs Marka, a member of the discovery team. “The skies will never be the same.” An all-star international team of astrophysicists used an exquisitely sensitive, $1.1 billion set of twin instruments known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or LIGO, to detect a gravitational wave generated by the collision of two black holes 1.3 billion lightyears from Earth. The proof consisted of what scientists called a single chirp — in truth, it sounded more like a thud — that was picked up on Sept. 14. Astronomers played the recording at an overflowing news conference Thursday. “That’s the chirp we’ve been looking for,” said Louisiana State University physicist Gabriela Gonzalez, scientific spokeswoman for the LIGO team. Some physicists said the finding is as big a deal as the 2012 discovery of the subatomic Higgs boson, known as the “God particle.” Some said this is bigger. “It’s really comparable only to Galileo taking
up the telescope and looking at the planets,” said Penn State physics theorist Abhay Ashtekar, who wasn’t part of the discovery team. Gravitational waves, postulated by Albert Einstein in 1916 as part of his theory of general relativity, are extraordinarily faint ripples in space-time, the continuum that combines both time and three-dimensional space. When massive objects like black holes or neutron stars collide, they generate gravitational waves that stretch space-time or cause it to bunch up like a fishing net. Scientists found indirect proof of gravitational waves in the 1970s by studying the motion of two colliding stars, and the work was honoured as part of the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics. But now scientists can say they have direct proof. “It’s one thing to know sound waves exist, but it’s another to actually hear Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,” said Marc Kamionkowski, a physicist at Johns Hopkins University who wasn’t part of the discovery team. “In this case, we’re actually getting to hear black holes merging.” In this case, the crashing of the two black holes stretched and squished Earth so that it was “jiggling like Jell-O,” but in a tiny, almost imperceptible way, said David Reitze, LIGO’s executive director. The dual LIGO detectors went off just before 5 a.m. in Louisiana and emails started flying. But the finding had to be verified, using such means as conventional telescopes, before the scientists could say with confidence it was a gravitational wave. They concluded there was less than a 1-in-3.5-million chance they were wrong, he said. Reitze said that given how quickly they found their first wave, scientists expect to hear more of them, maybe even a few per month. Detecting gravitational waves is so difficult that Einstein figured scientists would never be able to hear them. The greatest scientific mind of the 20th century underestimated the technological know-
how of his successors. In 1979, the National Science Foundation decided to give money to the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to come up with a way to detect the waves. Twenty years later, they started building two LIGO detectors in Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana, and they were turned on in 2001. But after years with no luck,
scientists realized they had to build a much more sensitive system, which was turned on last September. Sensitivity is crucial because the stretching and squeezing of spacetime by gravitational waves is incredibly tiny. Essentially, LIGO detects waves that pull and compress the entire Milky Way galaxy “by the width of your thumb,” said team member Chad Hanna of Pennsylvania State University.
Each LIGO detector has two giant perpendicular arms more than 2 miles long. A laser beam is split and travels both arms, bouncing off mirrors to return to the arms’ intersection. Normally, the two beams are aligned so that they balance each other out and there’s nothing to hear. But if there’s a gravitational wave, it creates an incredibly tiny mismatch, which is what LIGO detects.
