Twisted John McKeown dressed as Hannibal Lecter, welcomes those brave enough to his haunted house, at 11885 Springdale Drive. It’s open on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, 6:30-8 p.m. until Halloween night. Admission is free, although donations are being accepted for the food bank operating out of Pitt Meadows United Church – 12109 Harris Road.

One man was injured in a brazen shooting on a Maple Ridge street Sunday night. Several gun shots rang out around 7:45 p.m. in the 22400 block of 121st Avenue in the district’s downtown core. A man, who lives nearby, ran out of his house after he heard the shots. “A car squealed away and a big dude, 220 pounds ... comes walking down the middle of the street, shotgun in his right hand and cocks the gun,” said the man, who watched from 30 metres away.

Eyes in sky over downtown Ridge Security company buys two aerial drones by P hi l M e l nych uk staff reporter

John Griffiths, president of Westridge Security, prepares his unmanned aerial drone in Memorial Peace Park on Tuesday.

In a few weeks, an eye in the Maple Ridge sky will find lost hikers, inspect fires, watch out for bylaw breakers and could even help out police in touchy hostage scenarios. Two remote-controlled drones will give a local company, Westridge Security Services, that

ability, making it among the first in B.C., if not the country. “There’s nobody I know who’s doing that,” said Westridge owner John Griffiths. “To actually have a drone registered to a security company, we’re the first ones.” Griffiths bought the first drone, a QA V 540 a few months ago. It’s a smaller machine that cost about $4,000, was designed to fly in bad weather and could come in handy locating people lost in Maple Ridge’s mountains and forests. Recently, Westridge got another,

“It’s a brand new part of the business that we’re offering now,” he said. “It’s basically for hire for search and rescue, for law enforcement … rescue services,” Griffiths added. “So if you’re flying over a house, you should have a good reason why you’re doing that, really. The only way we’d be doing that if there was a home that was on fire and the fire was absolutely massive and the fire department called us, that’s the only time you’d see us over your house.” See Drones, p9

the sophisticated, carbon-fibre DJI S800, a $12,000 model with eight arms and eight propellers, which allow it to carry up to seven kilograms of freight, such as food, medicine or a radio. Both have a flying time of about 40 minutes, with a range of about five kilometres, depending on the equipment carried. When it comes to how far up the drones can fly, the sky’s the limit. Griffiths had the hardware on display in Haney Place Mall this past weekend and wowed the RCMP’s emergency response team.

Fees boot soccer out of school gyms by Neil Corbet t staff reporter

Another group has been driven out of gymnasiums in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District because of increased rental fees. Last year, the West Coast Auto Group Football Club (WCAGFC) rented 65 hours per week in school gyms, for 65 teams. That was almost all of the time made available to the club by the school district. The players in the under 6, U7 and U8 age groups played soccer indoors. This year, as the local school district raised gym rental fees from a subsidized $5 per hour to $33.75, soccer is moving outdoors. “We can’t do that [increase] without raising our fees,” said the club treasurer Greg Andrews. The rental fee had already been set for the coming year when the increase was announced, so the soccer club had to make other arrangements. “It caught us a bit by surprise,” said Andrews. “So, we reworked the program.”

“The size of the increase was obviously a bit of a problem, and we had no capacity to adjust,” said WCAGFC executive director Misty Thomas. “It’s a fairly substantial chunk to bite off.” She estimated that it would have caused an increase of 25 to 30 per cent to the $175 fees at that age group. She noted some coaches have continued with the indoor program, finding other ways to pay for gym space for their individual teams. The soccer association follows the Girl Guides, who appeared at the Oct. 9 meeting of the school board to ask for a reduced rate. They have also cancelled gymnasium rentals, opting instead to rent halls, churches and other facilities. Thomas is sympathetic to the board’s budget problems. “The school district has their challenges, they have their issues, and they’ve made decisions that we have to adjust to.” She noted that during some winters there have been substantial periods of time when the fields

are unplayable. The three turf fields in the district are generally used by older divisions, while younger players can practice in gyms. This year, practice time may be lost. “They lose that opportunity to develop,” said Thomas. School board chair Mike Murray said the new rental rates reflect the true cost to the district. “Everyone knows it costs us money to provide facilities, heat those facilities and clean those facilities,” he said. School district staff estimate that the school system has subsidized facility rentals by about $110,000 per year. Murray said some soccer teams have booked space in the gymnasiums, and at this point it does not appear the board’s total rental revenue will decrease this budget year. Whether there would there be janitorial staff working and the heat turned on in schools if no one is using the gyms, Murray said will be considered when the board reviews its rental fees and feedback from the

community. Trustee Susan Carr, also a director with the WCAGFC, has asked the soccer association to write the board. “We [the school board] are going to review it, and this is exactly the kind of information we need,” she said. “It is quite a spike increase. “It probably should have been addressed years ago, and gradually brought up and increased.” She noted that the rental fee increase was a small part of the budget process. The overall budget was about $130 million, and Carr and her fellow trustees had to wrestle with a $5.66 million shortfall in funding. “If you don’t know all of the intricacies, it might look like a money grab,” she said. “But we’re not going to raise the rental fees and solve our budget problems,” she said. She said trustees always intended to review the rental rate increases. “We want to partner with the community as much as we can,” said Carr. “I would like to look at it again.”

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

Eyes in the sky A private security firm that patrols downtown Maple Ridge has purchased two aerial drones – remote-controlled aircraft like those used in combat zones. The drones cost $4,000 and $12,000. They have a maximum flight time of 40 minutes, are generally cheaper than flying a helicopter, and sound more like a lawn mower. Each pilot must follow Canadian Aviation Regulations and hold a Special Flight Operation Certificate. RCMP and other Canadian police forces use them already, for traffic control and tactical surveillance. Drones can also assist in accident reconstructions, provide live intelligence on potential threats, or support search and rescue operations. But they are not used to spy in bedroom windows. They can, however, carry infra-red cameras and those with facial recognition capabilities, which raises privacy concerns. The drones will not be used for regular patrols in downtown Maple Ridge, which already has cameras mounted on downtown buildings, and inside businesses. Thefts and break-ins, drug use and drug deals, as well as prostitution continue to haunt the downtown area. It’s one reason why the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Association hires Westridge Security. But the drones won’t be used to discourage such activity, at least not yet. More so they will survey properties by owner’s request, identifying homeless camps and marijuana grow operations, Still, rules must be established for the use of the drones in Maple Ridge, to ensure images are only retained when there is reasonable suspicion they contain evidence of a crime or are relevant to an ongoing investigation or trial. The drones should only be used for specific purposes, which should not be decided by police. Usage policies should be clear and open to the public, with audits and oversight, to prevent misuse. As well, domestic drones should not be equipped with lethal or non-lethal weapons. Beyond that, they could save a life. – The News

B.C. oil spill study misinterpreted VICTORIA – The release of the B.C. government’s detailed study into oil spill response capability off the West Coast created the usual brief wave of media shock and horror. This just in: if crude oil spilled in the Dixon Entrance, the storm-tossed sea B.C. Views Tom Fletcher lane north of Haida Gwaii, the combined resources of Canadian and U.S. containment and collection response could only recover an estimated four per cent of it. And that’s in the summer. The winter recovery rate would be more like three per cent. Talk radio and website headlines set the narrative in minutes. How could anyone even consider running oil tankers through that pristine B.C. coastal area? It’s crazy. Here’s the big fact clearly stated in the study by U.S.-based Nuka Research and Planning Group, and ignored by most of the media and public. There are hundreds of tankers filled with crude oil sailing through these stormy seas every year. It’s been going on since Alaska North Slope crude was developed in the 1970s. Six of the seven oil spill simulations run by Nuka are based on Alaska crude, because that’s overwhelmingly what has been shipped along B.C.’s North Coast for 40 years. This lack of crude oil spill response capability has existed the entire time, without a whisper of protest

or media attention, even after the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster near the oil’s point of origin. The current narrative, hammered home by U.S.-controlled environmental groups and their aboriginal partners in the “Great Bear Rainforest,” is that only Canadian oil is a threat. How much Alaska crude is shipped down the B.C. coast? According to Nuka’s analysis, it’s currently about 38 million cubic metres each year. That’s enough to fill B.C. Place stadium to the roof – 15 times. The Sierra-Greenpeace-ForestEthicsDogwood gang, a sort of billionairebankrolled green Team America, has worked hard to promote the falsehood that “tar sands” oil is vastly worse than that nice fair-trade Alaska stuff. Their claims about acidity and abrasiveness of diluted bitumen didn’t hold up, and it’s still hotly contested whether the heavy oil in diluted bitumen would float, emulsify or sink in actual sea conditions. When the federal government announced a study to determine what spilled bitumen would do in North Coast waters, that too was attacked by the Green Party as a secret scheme to prop up Enbridge’s pipeline proposal. So it’s a scandal when you don’t know the answers, and it’s a scandal when you try to find them. Another question that gets little attention is whether it’s better for spilled oil to sink rather than wash up on beaches. Crude oil is, if you’ll pardon the expression, organic. Spills produce a huge spike in oil-eating bacteria that leads to an increase in fish populations at a certain stage. This was documented in

a 1994 book called Degrees of Disaster, written by an expert who stayed on in Valdez for four years, long after the TV cameras and grandstanding politicians went home. Victoria-based Dogwood seized on a 2012 Nuka study done for the Haisla Nation at Kitimat, which found that in ocean conditions that are present more than half of the time, there would be no immediate way to respond to a spill at sea.

Dogwood’s “no tankers campaign director” hinted that this information was intentionally left out of the B.C. government study, and the media ate it up.

Dogwood’s “no tankers campaign director” hinted that this information was intentionally left out of the B.C. government study, and the media ate it up. No tankers? Better check again. Dogwood’s mission is clearly not to protect the B.C. coast from oil spills. If it were, they would be protesting the ongoing risk from Alaska tankers.

The News/letters An economic report card for Mr. Harper Editor, The News: Re: Cheesemaker annoyed by trade deal (The News, Oct. 18). Canada needs to diversify export of its manufactured and processed minerals, food and technology-based products to establish its economic independence. We have been exporting more than 70 per cent to our historical partner, the U.S., and putting all eggs in one basket. The recent announcement of a free trade deal with Europe is welcome news and could trigger our future economic diversity and prosperity. This will involve some 28 European countries, 500 million people and $17 trillion in annual trade. However, parallel to several economic advantages, it is inevitable that there will be a few setbacks for some businesses. These few businesses are likely to be compensated for their losses by the government. Let us give credit to Prime Minister Stephen Harper for promoting this deal. If we were to evaluate Mr. Harper’s performance as our prime minister, here is a summary of the key negative points: • environmental compromise while promoting minerals/ petroleum projects; • indifference to climate change; • Senate scandals and misleading Canada about his no prior knowledge of Nigel Wright’s payment to Mike Duffy; • silence about misuse of taxpayer’s money by other senators; •closed-door manipulation of the issue by suspending three senators without pay, but with possibilities to draw salaries under medical pretext; • handling of Canadian First Nations’ long-standing cultural, economic and social justice problems. Positive points: • development of Canada-Europe free trade agreement. Soon, all the negative points, which unfortunately overwhelm the positive ones, will be remembered by Canadian voters. Pleased to pay school taxes Editor, The News: Re: Why pay for service I wouldn’t use? (Letters, Oct. 16). I don’t think anyone should complain about paying taxes for schools just because you have no children or that your children have finished school. That is the whole idea about public education, or we would be back to only private schools for the wealthy. Each generation, in their, turn pays school taxes and we should be pleased to do so. The cycle of poverty continues Editor, The News: Re: Problem gamblers hit hard (The News, Oct. 18). Thank-you for highlighting and running this important article for our weekend community paper. This subject hits very hard for some families. How problematic is it? Almost every family has at least one family member who is affected by some form of addiction or mental health issue, including mine. This casino could not have been placed in a more dire location. Located just one block from the local welfare office and two blocks from the mental heath office and Salvation Army, where our most vulnerable population go on a regular basis. The public’s opinion to Ma-

ple Ridge council seemed to have gone unheeded. It seems that Maple Ridge council has an agenda all their own. If council is so gung-ho in putting in a casino, at least put it on River Road, or a location where one with money to spare can drive to their destination. The population I’m referring to has limited capacity for the result of consequences, but live mostly in the moment. One can be sure that this vulnerable population, with monthly check in hand, will be lured to walking up the street to try and make some quick money. These people, who have so little to begin with, will have even less – or nothing after a few minutes in our new, luxury gaming centre in Maple Ridge. The mentality ill or ad-

dicted person will have to wait another month before he or she receives any more money for essentials, or will theft and crime increase to compensate for a lack of funds? Or the cycle continues. Claudia Finamore Maple Ridge

Self-discipline Editor, The News: Re: Problem gamblers hit hard (The News, Oct. 18). I play the slots only about once every three years, but I can empathize with those who find the games so alluring. One change I have noticed, that might have some bearing on the overspending, is that casinos have gone from paying off with a waterfall of nickels and dimes to issuing paper invoices. I feel that this change

has the psychological effect of causing the players to spend more money. Formerly, when the cash came tumbling into the tray, it was natural to pocket some of it, then use the remainder for more play. Now, I have to discipline myself to cash in this receipt-– it is more natural to just keep playing until all the winnings have vanished. I would venture that other gamers are the same, and rather than returning home with a pocketful of change, they are empty-handed. Families suffer from having a member who is a gambling addict, and anything that can make the pastime fun rather than a compulsive behaviour, should be implemented. Patricia Palomino Maple Ridge

MP’s wife uses travel for charitable activities Editor, The News: Re: Show some respect, Mr. MP (Letters, Oct. 18). In Mathew Scott’s criticism of my wife’s travel expenses, he appears to be unaware that many years ago Parliament determined that it is important to make it as family-friendly as pos-

sible. That’s why the House of Commons allows a limited number of trips for spouses and dependents to occasionally travel with the Member of Parliament. That provision, which I was aware of when I ran for election, recognizes that our families make important contributions

to our work as Members of Parliament. That’s certainly true in my case. Constituents might also be interested to know that much of my wife’s travel has been connected to her leadership role in the parliamentary spouses’ charitable fundraising activities. That said, I

continue to look for ways to reduce my travel expenses, including fewer trips and the use of flight passes. That’s how I’ve reduced my travel expenses by almost 75 per cent. Randy Kamp, MP Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge – Mission

Problems in the world bigger than pot and breasts Editor, The News: Re: Top-free activist welcomes support (The News, Oct. 18); Ridge pot petitioners still optimistic (The News, Oct. 18). There are major problems in the world – poverty, genocide, wars, and starva-

tion. But two of Maple Ridge’s own, Craig Speirs and Linda Meyer, struggle in their monumental quests of zoning out our youth and for women to bare their breasts. Mr. Speirs’ statement that pot doesn’t hurt youth or

their potential is ludicrous. Also, he casts aspersions on medical professionals for being biased against cannabis and addiction. Yes, they see the human wreckage from addiction. Alcohol causes more than enough problems without

adding more drugs. Mr. Speirs almost has marijuana curing cancer, saves taxes and human potential. Can the Nobel Prize be in the future of these two? Cherryl Katnich Maple Ridge

‘Operator decides’ Drones from front

Flying within the city also requires a Transport Canada permit, he pointed out. Instead, Griffiths said the drones will be used on an as-needed basis, rather than regular patrols. For instance, if a client needs a remote or large property surveilled, the drone would come in handy. They could also be used for bylaw enforcement, such as monitoring homeless camps. Maple Ridge Fire Department asked Westridge if they could use the drone for flying over a sawmill fire this summer. But the machine wasn’t ready.

The company expects to get its licence soon from Transport Canada, allowing it to fly at any time. Flying within the city would require a separate permit, though. “This is something that’s definitely happening. We always want to be in the forefront of technology.” RCMP recently used a drone, equipped with forward-looking infra-red camera, to locate a motorvehicle crash victim in Saskatchewan. Domino Pizza in the U.K. is even using them to deliver pizzas to customer’s doors. Each machine is usually equipped with two cameras, one a high-definition video used for navigating and flying. Goggles give

the pilot on the ground a real-time view of what the drone actually sees as it flies. The operator on the ground decides what’s recorded. The camera used for flying wouldn’t be recording. Only when it reaches the scene would the operator decide what to record. “So we’re not recording the whole flight. We’re only recording for our clients what’s requested. Under Transport Canada rules, “We have to have a reason to fly. It has to be a request for service. Griffiths said the role of the drones could expand, eventually. However, “As for taking it out and seeing what’s going on downtown, we

wouldn’t be able to do that.” Ridge Meadows RCMP said if a drone is needed, several are available from RCMP in the Lower Mainland. Michael McEvoy, deputy commissioner for the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, said that, under the Personal Information Protection Act, organizations can’t collect information about people without their consent. That law, however, doesn’t apply to journalists or individuals. McEvoy said he the commission will be checking with Westridge to determine what information it intends to collect from the drones.

Construction of a new hotel overlooking the Fraser River in Port Haney could start in the new year. HSH Hotel Inc., wants a development permit to allow it to build a 125room hotel and conference halls along with shops, three restaurants, a swimming pool and gym at 22379 – 116th Ave. If Maple Ridge council approved the permit Tuesday, developer Seiko Huang would only need a building permit and financing before construction starts on the Holiday Inn Maple Ridge, sometime in the new year. “We are doing the drawings because we need final approval from Holiday Inn,” Huang said last week. “So we need to go ahead very fast.” The project got first reading in 2011 and a year later went to second reading and public hearing. According to a staff report, the application was given a one-year extension until next February to complete financing

Maple Ridge staff say the hotel would help promote the tourism value of the Port Haney area and add vibrancy to the area, particularly to 224th Street, which is the main pedestrian venue to Haney Wharf and the West Coast Express. Originally, the building was to be concrete, but cost considerations have led to the use of wood construction for the fourstorey hotel section. As well, underground parking will be only two levels instead of three,

while a green roof over the hotel portion has also been scratched. The building would still aim for silver certification under the Leadership in Energry and Environmental Design program. Low-flow plumbing, LED lighting in public areas, occupancy sensors in low-use areas, energyefficient windows and sun shading along with efficient irrigation and heating ventilation and air conditioning systems are some of the features considered. A report notes that public space would be provided on 224th Street and Callaghan Avenue, with more landscaping at Callaghan and the Haney

Bypass, where traffic lights would be installed. A lower landscaped and garden area would give guests a view overlooking the Fraser River. The main entrance to the hotel would be off 116th Avenue. A gym, swimming pool, cafe and outdoor patio would be on the same level. Total construction area is 4,612 sq. metres, while the site itself is just more than an acre. Granite stone and warm colours would be used for the exterior so the building blends with the heritage tone of Port Haney. The project would have had to start by then or begin the reapplication process anew.

Purdy’s Chocolatier said YES to renewable natural gas At Purdy’s Chocolatier, they work as hard to reduce waste and emissions as they do to make decadent chocolates. So they signed up their Vancouver distribution centre for renewable natural gas, a carbon neutral* source of energy derived from local organic waste. District of Maple Ridge and the Lions Club. That allows for a $10,000 show with the right amount of wow factor, said Lions club member Kim Kamstra, who has been one of the organizers for the past seven years. He said the conditions are right for another good night on Halloween Eve. “Weather predictions are great, and it has always been a good community event,” said Kamstra. Kamstra gave a nod to Marv Jones, saying, “We need some help to pull this off.” Fireworks bylaws have curbed the number of individual Halloween block parties with fireworks, so the municipality and the Maple Ridge Fire Department saw a need for a community display. For the past decade it has been done in conjunction with the Ghost Ridge haunted house for charity. Kamstra said the need for fireworks safety was underlined in August, when teens carelessly using fireworks caused a fire that resulted in two Maple Ridge houses

“Weather predictions are great, and it has always been a good community event.” being burned down. Since 2005, the sale, purchase and lighting of fireworks in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows has been restricted to individuals who hold a certificate from Natural Resources Canada’s Explosives Regulatory Division. The course costs $100. The fireworks bylaw allows RCMP, bylaws officials and firefighters to ticket offenders with fines of $1,000 for selling fireworks and $200 for setting them off without a permit. The community fireworks will be held at the Albion Fairgrounds, 23448 – 105th Avenue, on Oct. 30, beginning at 7 p.m.

Flu shots now available New this year is nasal spray vaccine, better for younger children contributed

Flu shots are now available at doctors’ offices, pharmacies, walk-in clinics and specialized public health flu clinics. “In a typical flu season, thousands of people develop serious illness or even die from the flu or its complications, such as pneumonia,” said chief medical health officer, Dr. Paul Van Buynder. “The influenza vaccine is the best protection against influenza illness and its complications and is a safe and effective way to help people stay healthy, prevent illness, and even save lives.” There are between 4,000 and 8,000 deaths from influenza and its complications each year in Canada. Fraser Health recommends flu shots for everyone. They are free in B.C. for a long list of people: children from six months to five years of age; people 65 years and older; pregnant women; Aboriginal people; people with chronic health conditions; and those with compromised immune systems. The vaccine is also important for anyone who

lives or works with a person who is at higher risk of problems from the flu. To protect patients in health care facilities, last year British Columbia’s health authorities adopted a policy requiring all doctors, staff, students and volunteers to get immunized or to wear a mask while at work during influenza season. To further protect patients, we’re also asking people visiting our facilities to do the same. Masks will be available at nursing stations and/or outpatient reception desks. People planning to visit loved ones in a health care facility or who will take family members to outpatient appointments are also eligible for a free flu shot. New this year is the availability of a nasal spray vaccine, Flumist. It is free for eligible children aged two to 17 years old. It is a live vaccine that provides better protection in younger children than the regular flu shot. As it is sprayed into the nose, it has the added advantage of being needle-free. • For a complete list of flu clinics, visit our website at www.fraserhealth.ca/flushot, contact your local Public Health office, or consult the BC Flu Clinic Locator at immunizebc.ca or call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1. Bring your CareCard or other government I.D. (valid driver’s licence) to the clinic, and wear a short-sleeved shirt.

VICTORIA – Despite the media and political focus on bullying, an analysis of recent youth suicides in B.C. has found that bullying was a factor in only one in four cases. The B.C. Coroners Service released the report of a death review panel looking at 91 youth suicides between 2008 and 2012. It recommends better coordination between schools, hospitals and mental health services to identify teens at risk of suicide, and follow-up after suicides to determine drug use, sexual orientation and other possible risk factors. More than 60 per cent of young people studied had previous or current contact with the mental health system, the largest common factor. But 27 per cent of the cases were teens who took their lives without any previous warning signs identified by family, school or people in the community. Almost half of the teens in the study were 17 and 18, and two out of three successful suicides were boys. Of the 91 cases, 18 were aboriginal, a rate about twice as high as the general population.

Michael Egilson, who chaired the B.C. Coroners Service Child Death Review Panel, said the next step is to meet with young people to get their input into how best to reach vulnerable teens before they harm themselves. NDP children and family development critic Carole James said more awareness and study of the problem is helpful, but the recommendations have been made in other studies by coroners and Mary Ellen TurpelLafond, B.C.’s independent children’s advocate. James said parents often describe a “revolving door” where teens with mental illness go to emergency, get medication and are told to return to the hospital or call police if they have another crisis. Meanwhile they go on a waiting list for counselling or residential treatment, which can take several months. James said when she questioned Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux in budget debates this past summer, she was told there are no more resources in the current budget to expand youth mental health services.

Cases of measles confirmed Black Press

Fraser Health urging all residents and health care professionals to get vaccinated for measles after several individuals in the region were recently diagnosed with the disease. Public health officials confirmed four cases of measles in Burnaby, Surrey, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. So far there’s no known source of exposure to measles – most infections are normally from travel to another country. “These people haven’t travelled so we really have no idea where they picked it up from,” said medical health officer Dr. Michelle Murti, adding the cases are unrelated to each other. All the recent cases were either unimmunized, incompletely immunized, or didn’t know their immunization status, she said. Anyone born after 1956 should have two doses of measles-containing vaccine, although many have had just one or none at all. The newer cases in Burnaby and Surrey each had one vaccination, which Murti said underscores the case for getting two doses. Advice and vaccinations are being offered to anyone who may have been in contact with those infected, and anyone who is unsure about their measles immunization can get the vaccine for free from doctors, clinics and some pharmacies. There were three cases on Bowen Island or Whistler in June. And in August Fraser Health warned that a measles-infected visitor to Abbotsford Re-

gional Hospital exposed about 60 women and newborns in a post-natal unit. The disease is most serious for infants, who die at a rate of one for every 3,000 infections in developed countries. It’s much worse in the third world, which accounts for most of the 150,000 annual measles deaths worldwide. The risk of fatalities as well as significant complications like pneumonia and brain inflammation is why health leaders encourage vaccination. Measles are highly contagious starting one to two days before symptoms show up and continuing until four days after the classic measles rash begins. The droplets from coughs and sneezes can remain airborne in a room for one to two hours after the infectious person has left. “People can spread it without even knowing that they’re ill,” Murti said. Anyone who develops measles symptoms – starting with a fever, runny nose, cough and red, watery eyes – is urged to stay home and not expose others. Fraser Health has put up signs in its facilities warning that anyone arriving with those symptoms should advise staff immediately so steps can be taken to prevent infection of others. • Anyone who suspects they may have measles should immediately contact their doctor by telephone first, or call HealthLink B.C. at 811. Physicians are reminded to immediately report suspected cases of measles to public health authorities.

Stoney Nakano’s story of internment Looking B ac k by Fred Braches

S

tony Nakano and his nephew Dana Oikawa visited at the Maple Ridge Museum recently. It was not their first visit, but the continuation of a dialog that began a few years ago. When we parted then, Stony promised he was going to send us a copy of his story and that is what he has done. Stony was born in Ruskin in 1921, where his family had settled in 1919 after spending a few years at Britannia Beach. His father bought a piece of the Gilchrist homestead that was located on Parker Road [now 280th], where Ruskin Park is today. The family expanded to include nine children and they grew up farming that 10-acre piece of land. Like so many other Japanese families, they grew strawberries, but later added several chicken houses, which Stony has strong memories of cleaning before breakfast. The children all attended school, but would usually be pulled out before the end of the year to help pick strawberries. Stony’s whole family worked on the farm and he estimates that their net income was less $1,000 a year. They grew most of

It was a life with little in the way of leisure time. After English school on Tuesdays and Fridays, and all day Saturday, the children attended Japanese school. During the summer holidays, one whole month was spent at Japanese school. As the children got older, the eldest took jobs off the farm, while the younger ones took over the farm work. At 17, Stony got a job with Kamimura Logging. The wages earned by Stony and his older brother, Koichiro, mostly went back into the farm, particularly for trucks and other equipment. In 1938, tragedy struck the family when Stony’s mother died of tuberculosis. Kiyoko, the eldest

of the girls, took over the mother role and raised the younger children, the youngest of whom was still an infant. In 1941, the Nakano family’s world was rocked again by the news of the attack on Pearl Harbour. Nothing would be the same after that. In May 1942, Stony, his father Rikima and two of his brothers were told to report to Hastings Park. After being housed in a cow barn for a week, Stony and his brothers were sent to a road camp west of Revelstoke. His father, who was in his mid-50s at the time, was allowed to return home. A short while later, Rikima and the rest of the family were told to vacate their house so that a Scottish family could move in. For a time, they lived in one of the outbuildings on the farm. However, they were soon sent to another Japanese

farm to help bring in the harvest, leaving behind the house and land and everything they’d worked for forever. Stony’s father was devastated. After the harvest was finished, Stony’s father and the rest of the family were sent to the Tashme internment camp, where the children could be housed and Rikima worked in a sawmill and helped cut firewood for the camp. Meanwhile, Stony recounts a life of moving around the country from job to job – working everything from road crews to sugar beets to logging outfits to cattle farms. He was 21 years old when the internment began and he saw it as a life of mobility and adventure that would not have been available to him if he had stayed in Ruskin, even though every move required the permission of the B.C. Security Commission and proof that he had a job to go to. As he says in the conclusion to his story, “Although the evacuation took much from us, those four years during the war of travelling from job to job, seeing many places and making many friends provided me with a learning experience that I will always cherish.”

“I tend to write about those who meet their challenges and rise,” says Love Morrison. “I believe that they inspire others and when we all rise to be the best we can be, humanity will rise.” In keeping with her penchant for variety, her latest venture Radar the Rescue Dog is a children’s book that’s meant to teach the fundamentals of mountain safety. “Radar was a real dog, he was Canada’s first avalanche rescue dog,” says Love Morrison, who met the German Shepherd and his handler Bruce Watt when she lived in Whistler. It’s a tale about three adventurous young skiers who venture out of bounds and find themselves lost on Whistler Mountain. Radar tracks them down. Love Morrison was inspired to write Radar’s story while researching an article about the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association. The story sat on the shelf for more than a decade until she found a publisher.

Radar the Rescue Dog is Janet Love Morrison’s fifth book. She hosts a workshop at the Maple Ridge library on Saturday. “At that time, there wasn’t the avalanche awareness and backcountry awareness as there is now,” says Love Morrison. “People weren’t skiing in the back-country as much as they do these days. Like so many things, when the consciousness is ready, things happen.” Radar the Rescue Dog is illustrated by Zuzana Riha Driediger, a member of the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association who lives in Revelstoke and is currently training her third rescue dog, who looks a lot like Radar. Justin Trudeau has written the foreword to the book because his family has been participated in mountain awareness since his brother Michel was tragically killed in an avalanche in November 1998. Love Morrison is a Goodwill Ambassador for Friends to Mankind, an international non-profit foundation that works with individuals, corporation and philanthropic organizations towards the better-

ment of humanity. It’s no wonder everything she writes must have a purpose. “I believe my writing has to serve, it has to serve humanity somehow,” she says. • Radar the Rescue Dog is available locally at Black Bond Books.

Grapes of wrath back on the road

The Grapes of Wrath play the ACT Nov. 2.

Contributed

One of Canada’s most popular and well-loved bands brings its “soaring harmonies, memorable melodies and shimmering guitar lines” to the ACT next month. Platinum-selling Canadian folk-rock trio The Grapes of Wrath stop in Maple Ridge Nov. 2 at the tail-end of a cross-Canada tour to celebrate the recent release of brand new, critically acclaimed album. If you lived in Canada in the late ’80s, it was hard to avoid the jangle-pop, strains of the Beatlesque sound emanating from every dorm room, and dominated alternative radio playlists across the country. You will surely recall singles All the Things I Wasn’t and What Was Going Through My Head that propelled the band to platinum success. In the spring of 2012 the trio gathered at co-producer Darryl Neudorf ’s private studio to begin work on the album – the first time all three had been in a studio together since completing their final album, These Days, at London’s Abbey Road Studios in 1991. The resulting 12 tracks, written by both Kane and Tom Hooper, feature the signature harmonies, vivid melodies and heartfelt lyrics The Grapes Of Wrath are known for. “This record is a continuation of where we last left off. This isn’t a nostalgia trip. It’s like our other records – the next step in our growth as songwriters and musicians. The only difference is it took us a little longer to make the step,” Tom Hooper said. The Grapes of Wrath formed in Kelowna in 1983

and released their first album in 1985, September Bowl Of Green. In 1987, the band broke through to Canadian mainstream radio with their sophomore effort, Treehouse. That was followed in 1989 by the platinum selling Now And Again, which spawned three hit singles, including What Was Going Through My Head.

“This isn’t a nostalgic trip.”

Maureen Wong has been an artist for 45 years

Maple Ridge artist Maureen Wong presents a retrospective of her work this weekend to raise funds for the Gogos for African Grandmothers. An artist for 45 years, the exhibition will features paintings from the late 1960s to work that includes collage and her more recent forays into fibre art. “It’s a real broad show for one artist,” says Wong, who estimates there’ll be at least 50 painting on display as well as jewelry and canvas and denim weaving. Wong’s work is primarily abstract. She’s a strong colourist in terms of all her painting. A founding member of the Maple Ridge Art Gallery, Wong has also been dabbling in weaving. Her work as a member of the Whonnock Weavers guild, though, is far from traditional. Her pieces feature woven canvas and recycled denim jeans. “Geometry has always been a recurring theme in my art,” says Wong. “I rarely do a landscape painting. I absorb the images in na-

Gill named Burrards head coach by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

C

hris Gill was one of the great B.C. lacrosse players of his generation. Next season, he’ll start proving himself as a coach. Gill has been named the new bench boss for the Maple Ridge Burrards, beginning in the 2014 season. He takes on a Burrards team that is considered well stocked with young talent, but still learning how to win. Gill knows the Burrards well. He has played with many of the guys, has coached against them when he was an assistant with the New Westminster Salmonbellies for two seasons, and the Pitt Meadows resident has watched his hometown team as a fan in the stands. Gill likes the talent level. “They’ve had a good team the last few years, they have drafted well. The pieces are in place, playerwise.” He likes the team toughness. “They’re all men. They know what it takes.” He likes having leading scorer Curtis Dickson. “He’s the best player in the world.” Really? “Look what he puts up there – he’s a stud. You ask 30 coaches, and 20 would pick him to start their team.” Despite those assets, the Burrards ended the season a ship on the rocks. The losing record of eight wins and 10 losses

does nothing to describe the highs and lows of last season. The Burrards started the campaign 4-1, and were talked about as one of the elite teams in the Western Lacrosse Association. But they scuffled into mediocrity by mid-season, and finally collapsed with a stretch of five straight losses in their last six games that knocked them out of the playoffs. Four of those five critical losses were by a single goal. Gill believes the team needs better focus and mental toughness. He has concrete plans, but wouldn’t tip his hand in the media.

“It seems like the season’s a long way away, but I can’t wait for it to start.” Chris Gill, Burrards coach “You put players in the right place at the right time, and let players be players.” The Burrards brass heard his ideas, and obviously liked them. Gill takes over from Daren Fridge, who retains half of his title of head coach/general manager. “Chris’ craftiness around the crease will now transfer in his role as head coach. He interviewed very well and has some very creative plans to address some of our challenges from last season,” said Fridge. “We were looking for a dynamic leader with

valuable experience at the highest level of lacrosse, and Chris is exactly what we are seeking.” The Gill name alone brings credibility to the Burrards. He’s virtually lacrosse royalty. His father Sohen Gill is in the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame, which calls him “the hardest-working man in B.C. Lacrosse.” He was inducted as a builder. Among Sohen’s many exploits at every level of the game, he spent five years as the coach and manager of the Burrards. The younger Gill racked up 482 goals and 351 assists in 282 WLA games. His teams made the playoffs nine times and he was a Mann Cup finalist on two occasions. On top of that, he had a decorated National Lacrosse League career with stops in Baltimore, Toronto, Vancouver, Colorado, Edmonton and Calgary. Along the way, he raised the Champions Cup three times and he recorded 557 points in 173 career NLL games. He retired from the NLL in 2010 from Colorado Mammoth. “Chris is the consummate professional,” said Mammoth president Steve Govett. “He played his role over the course of his entire career as well as any of the best to ever play the game. I’m quite certain he’s destined for the hall of fame.” Gill agreed the Burrards coaching position is a great opportunity for a new coach looking to make his mark. “A hundred per cent – you don’t want to go to a team that is on its last legs. You want a team that’s young and eager and wants to win. If you want to coach in this league, this is where you want to be. “I’m excited to be part of the team, and we’re looking at taking a run at the Mann Cup this year, and for the next 10 years,” he added. “It seems like the season’s a long way away, but I can’t wait for it to start.”

The Ridge Meadows Flames lost games on Thursday and Friday, but the junior B team got back in the win column on Sunday with a victory over a hot Grandview Steelers team. Marco Ballarin and Nicholas Maydaniuk each scored twice as the Flames defeated the Steelers 5-2 at Burnaby Winter Club. Maydaniuk had the game’s first goal, then scored the game winner shorthanded early in the second period. Grant Rostvig also scored. Tyler Read was back in net and made 25 saves on 27 shots for the win. Read is 4-4-1 on the season, and is among the busiest goalies in the league, ranking second in both shots on net and saves. Ballarin’s points on the weekend give him seven goals and seven assists, for 14 points in 12 games. That is ninth in scoring in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. On Friday night, the Flames lost 5-1 to the Abbotsford Pilots in front of the home crowd at Planet Ice. Team captain Travis Oddy had the only goal. Goaltender Kurt Klimek faced 55 shots. The Flames managed 26. The Pilots lead the Harold Brittain Conference with a record of eight wins, three losses and a tie. On Thursday, the Flames lost 3-2 to the Mission City Outlaws in a road game. Jordan Rendle and Ballarin scored. Klimek was in net for the loss, and stopped 31 shots.

Game time the Flames will take on the Sockeyes on thursday night at Richmond Arena, then Friday host the north Delta Devils (4-7-0-1) at Planet Ice at 7:30 p.m.

It is with our deepest regret that we share the news that our son, brother, nephew, cousin, grandson, uncle and friend, Harrison Bouchard, passed away on October 13th, 2013. He leaves behind a very loving family that will miss him dearly each and every day. Still just a young man, trying to find his feet, he left this world much too soon. Although young, Harrison had accomplished so much in his life with his love of trucks and the road taking him on countless adventures and getting him in trouble on numerous occasions. A caring young man always willing to lend a hand, he was the greatest friend to everyone he met. A ceremony to remember and honour his life will be held on Thursday October 24th at 2:00pm at the Garden Hill Funeral Home in Maple Ridge. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, to please consider a donation to the youth ministry program at the Maple Ridge Baptist Church at: www.ridgebaptist.ca
