SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908
Secondary suite owners made to pay
MASTER CHEF CHALLENGE
District cracks down on unauthorized suites Mission Record
Owners of unauthorized secondary suites can expect to receive a bill in the mail from the District of Mission. Council has voted to crack down on homeowners who have not registered their suites. This year, approximately 850 secondary suites are registered with the district. Owners pay double the annual fee for water, sewer and garbage pickup. On average, that equates to an extra $1,174 per suite. However, an estimated 900 unauthorized suites are not paying those additional fees. “There’s nothing wrong with basement suites if they’re properly operated,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes after Monday’s council meeting. “I have a problem when 850 suite owners are paying, and all of those others aren’t paying. And we have ignored those others. It’s not right. There is a big inequity here.” Hawes said the fees being paid by the suite owners total close to $1 million a year, meaning the district could earn an additional $1 million or more if all suite owners paid the double fees. Staff have compiled a list of addresses that are believed to have unauthorized suites. Those will be sent a letter,
informing them they will be charged double for water, sewer and garbage on their 2016 municipal taxes. The homeowners can appeal the extra charges and have their home inspected to prove that no suite exists. Coun. Jenny Stevens supported the motion – as did all of council – saying it was about time that something was done. “This is a good example of council, acting on behalf of the interests of the community as a whole.” Stevens said secondary suites are needed in the community as a form of affordable housing and mortgage helpers. However, she added that when honest citizens are paying the fees and others are not, then something has to be done. “They are cheating the rest of the community, because if they were paying their full amount then perhaps the rest of the taxpayers wouldn’t have to pay such high taxes,” said Stevens. Approval has already been given to hire another bylaw enforcement officer to help with the secondary suite program, but staff have asked for an additional full-time tax clerk and a halftime administration clerk to help with the process. The cost will be approximately $113,000, plus $10,000 for computers and other equipment.
Jacqueline Clark, an accountant with the District of Mission, is one of 40 finalists on the third season of the hit CTV television series MasterChef Canada. The first episode aired on Sunday with contestants attempting to qualify as a top 14 finalist. While Clarke was not guaranteed a spot in the Top 14, her meal was good enough to earn her a second chance. She will compete again this Sunday, at 7 p.m. on CTV to try and earn a spot in the Top 14. First steps for Stave West
Monday & Tuesday Specials 1 LARGE
Mission Record
The district is planning to spend $110,300 to begin phase one of the Stave West Master Plan. The plan, which was approved in April of 2015, came about thanks to a partnership between the provincial government, the District of Mission and the Kwantlen First Nation. It is designed to help realize the tourism and recreational potential of the area. All three stakeholders have a vision for Stave West – a 5,000-hectare area situated in northern Mission around the west side of Stave Lake – that would see it transformed from its current under-regulated and often-abused state into a family-friendly destination for outdoor recreation and tourism development.

Stave West has a huge potential for tourism and recreation. The money, which will come from the district’s Forestry Reserve Fund, will go towards capital and one-time start up costs ($75,000) and operating costs ($35,300) for 2016. That includes the completion of a market driven tourism, an investment and development study, establishing an outdoor learning alliance with other institutes and organizations and funding for increased security in the area
during the summer months. The money will also go towards establishing a temporary managed gateway and welcome centre to the area. The facility should be running by May and provide daytime welcome services and overnight security from the May long weekend until Labour Day. How will budget impact Mission residents? B.C. Finance Minister Michael de Jong tabled a new budget on Tuesday that will see the provincial government invest $1.6 billion over the next three years on new and increased spending. But how will that investment impact Mission residents? According to Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson, capital spending will benefit Mission with a portion of $55 million for emergency preparedness and prevention initiatives to upgrade dikes – on both sides of the river. “Agriculture is a key local economic driver in our community and the new Farmers’ Food Donation Tax Credit is worth 25 per cent of qualifying agricultural products donated to a
registered charity providing food for the needy or supporting a school meal plan,” Gibson said. He also said changes to the Medical Service Plan will make all children exempt from MSP premiums, which should benefit about 70,000 single-parent families in the province. Premium assistance will be expanded, reducing payments for 335,000 people. Gibson said eligibility will also be expanded for the BC Training and Education Savings Program. “Children born on or after Jan. 1, 2006 will be eligible to receive a one-time $1,200 grant to the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). This expansion will give 40,000 additional children the opportunity to save for their future education.”

It was enough to convince show producers to put her through to the Top 40. Last week, episode one MasterChef premiered with 40 cooks competing for 14 spots into the next round. Cooking is a passion for Jacqueline Clark. While her profession is an accountant for the District of Mission, her real joy comes from creating in the kitchen. Now Clark is putting her talents to the ultimate test. Clark is a Top 40 contestant on the popular CTV program MasterChef Canada and has a chance, this weekend, to move forward by qualifying for one of the Top 14 spots. While she enjoys many cooking shows, Clark said she was “obsessed with the U.S. version of MasterChef. “I always wished I could apply for it because I’m generally a fairly competitive person, and I like to challenge myself, and I love cooking. When a Canadian version of the show was created, she knew it was something she “needed to do. Clark tried out last
She said one of the more difficult aspects of appearing on the show is getting used to lights and cameras all around. “It’s completely surreal. It’s just the oddest experience and the most wonderful experience you could ever have. And meeting other home cooks who are just as passionate about food as she is has been a treat for the local woman. “You can sit in a room with these people for eight hours and talk about food and not get bored. As for meeting the celebrity judges – Alvin Leung, Michael Bonacini and Claudio Aprile – Clark said it was a dream come true. “You kind of get the idea that people on TV aren’t real people, and you get to meet them, and they’re nice. Episode two of MasterChef Canada is on Sunday night at 7 p.m. on CTV.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
The power of pink
You have to wonder if, back in 2007, while David Shepherd and Travis Price were buying a stack of 50 pink shirts could they have imagined that their bullying protest would spread around the world. Probably not. They were just trying to support a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. But this year, on Feb. 24, we are celebrating Pink Shirt Day (or Anti-bullying Day, if you prefer) for the ninth year. And it’s five years since the United Nations took a stand and proclaimed May 4 International AntiBullying Day. That’s pretty good return for the purchase of a stack of cheap T-shirts. Why do people, especially kids, bully others? There are so many reasons that it would never be possible to find one answer that would fit all situations. What is common, however, is their victims. Bullies have a knack for
Do you agree with council’s decision to crack down on fees for secondary suites?
finding the kids that are unlikely to retaliate. And they chose them because the victim is different — skin colour, nationality, size, hair colour, shape of the nose, you name it — even the colour of shirt you choose to wear. Anyone who has been bullied knows that the old adage. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me” is far from the truth. Name-calling and other, more aggressive, forms of bullying does leave marks, marks that affect the victim for years to come. It’s a lot to ask from some pink shirts, but the annual reminder about the problem of bullying does offer hope that our cultures might finally be starting to grow up. Let’s hope the word continues to spread. Bullying will likely never be wiped out completely, but we can hope to reduce its hold on society. – Black Press

Housing czar defends drug ghettos Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views Housing Minister Rich Coleman was flabbergasted at the angry response to his solution to the Victoria courthouse “tent city,” the latest tarp-covered camp to spring up in southern B.C. Coleman announced two temporary shelters with three meals a day and medical supports. One is a former nursing home close to the courthouse squat, conveniently located near panhandling and drug dealing spots as well as taxpayer-funded services. The other offers indoor or outdoor tent space at a former youth custody centre, with a dedicated downtown shuttle bus so these victims of homelessness don’t have to endure B.C.’s most generous transit bus system. We weren’t consulted, said the indignant spokespeople for those bringing new-looking tents to take advantage of food and other handouts, offered in B.C.’s warmest climate by the province’s most naïve local
government. But this was just a show for the media by our resident professional protesters, some of whom aren’t really homeless. After the reaction, which Coleman described as “bizarre,” the combined 88 housing opportunities are being snapped up. Those on welfare will have to fork over their $375 monthly housing allowance, as the province continues to convert more housing and offer more rent subsidies. It’s no wonder that southern B.C. is the destination of choice. Coleman said it’s always been a seasonal thing, but this winter has been the highest in a decade, largely due to an exodus of economic migrants from the downturn in Alberta, naturally heading for B.C.’s most desirable real estate. I asked him about two other homeless hotspots. In Abbotsford, campers have ignored a city deadline to take down structures in a three-year-old camp, after temporary shelter and costly provincial supports were brought on. A courtroom and street confrontation looms with self-styled “drug war survivors” and their Vancouver legal help. In Maple Ridge, a tent camp sprang up next to the local Salvation Army shelter,
with people cycling through the shelter’s 15-day limit, camping and being fed until they could go back in. Mayor Nicole Read, who has worked in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, said Maple Ridge took on its own outreach, shelter and housing effort because the
Those on welfare will have to fork over their $375 monthly housing allowance, as the province continues to convert more housing and offer more rent subsidies. province’s $1 million-a-year Salvation Army operation isn’t working. Coleman is not amused. He said he’s had no complaints about Abbotsford’s Salvation Army shelter, and Read is the only one griping. And no mayor is going to tell him how to spend provincial dollars. Maple Ridge now has two shelters with accompanying street drugs, prostitution and crime.
I asked Coleman about the 10-year-study led by Simon Fraser University researcher Julian Somers on the housing, outreach and services in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. This is the heart of B.C.’s “housing first” strategy, where the province has bought and renovated 30 “single room occupancy” buildings, built another dozen and poured in every possible support, including the buyout of high-living executives at the Portland Hotel Society. The study found that the hardest cases are worse off than ever, based on court, hospital and other service records, while the influx to the notorious Vancouver drug ghetto have tripled in 10 years. “I haven’t had a chance to go over that report yet, but I disagree with the assumption I’ve heard already, because I walk the Downtown Eastside,” Coleman said. “I don’t know if they do every few weeks to a month, but I’ve been doing it for about nine or 10 years and I can tell you it’s a whole lot better down there.” The question is whether problems are being solved, or just better hidden from view. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Not a fan of Fortis billing Take a moment to look at and break down your Fortis gas bill delivery charges. My bill is as follows: 1. Basic: this is a charge for the privilege of being their customer, 0.3890 per day for me (whether I use any gas or not – $13.62 for 35 days). 2. There is the carbon tax on top of that to the tune of $24.73 which is calculated on the entire bill, not just for gas used. 3. Adding insult to injury, the car-
bon tax is taxed! GST of five per cent of the entire bill to a total of $7.71. My total amount due was $162.44 but the actual cost of the gas used was $34.21. This means that $128.23 has to be paid for delivery, storage and taxes. Where is the incentive to save energy? Celebrate Chamber of Commerce Week February 15-19
Celebrating business The Province has proclaimed Feb. 15-19, 2016, Chamber of Commerce Week in British Columbia. This proclamation recognizes more than 125 chambers of commerce, including Mission, across the province and the work they do to grow B.C.’s economy and create jobs said Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction Coralee Oakes. This year’s theme, Empowering B.C. Businesses, celebrates the leadership role that chambers play in their local communities where they build links as business advocates and encourage policies that support business and economic development. In the past year, the B.C. government has worked closely with the BC Chamber of Commerce to ensure small businesses can participate in economic opportunities and that their voices are heard through participation on B.C.’s Small Business Roundtable. The chamber also helps business owners and their employees develop skills and learn new
tools through promotion of the Canada – B.C. Job Grant to its membership. The BC chamber has been consistent with its message: red tape is one of the biggest burdens business owners face in growing their businesses and creating new jobs. Government has heard that message loudly and clearly and is responding by reducing unnecessary regulatory requirements by more than 43 per cent since 2001. “It’s hard to say enough about the impact of local chambers. Every day, throughout British Columbia, local chambers are finding new ways to empower B.C. businesses. Whether it’s through strategic business advocacy or by providing professional development and networking opportunities, chambers are sharply focused on empowering each and every business to succeed. Chamber Week celebrates the vision, hard work and cando spirit that our chambers bring to British Columbia,” said John Garson, president and CEO, BC Chamber of Commerce.

Stanley T. Cope
If you’re hurt in a car accident, your physical injuries may heal fairly quickly. But the accident could also trigger long-lasting psychological injuries – for which you could be entitled to compensation.
In a recent case, Tess (names changed) stood at an intersection one Friday, waiting to cross. She was struck by Mike’s speeding car, which ran a red light. The impact lifted Tess off her feet. Her head and shoulders hit the windshield and she flew some 15 feet up in the air, landing about 20 feet away. ICBC admitted Mike was to blame for the accident, but disagreed that the accident caused Tess’s post-accident psychological difficulties.
Overall, Tess suffered surprisingly minor physical injuries from the impact. Apart from her head injuries, her body showed some bruising, and she had chest and back pain and neck issues. All her external physical injuries healed fairly quickly and fully though.
from the accident led to her three-year leave of absence from the school board. She also said her personality and ability to function had been impaired, dimming her future employment prospects too. ICBC admitted Tess suffered an MTBI from the accident but argued it didn’t lead to permanent or long lasting psychological damage – there were other reasons for Tess’s leaves of absence and her current mental condition.

Years before the accident, Tess had worked in Africa with young children and found that work very meaningful. When she returned home she regained her teaching credentials but had some readjustment issues. The work wasn’t as meaningful she felt, and she had trouble coping with teaching in the normal prescribed environment, rather than her preferred Montessori environment, even before the accident. ICBC argued it was psychological issues pre-dating the accident that caused her ongoing difficulties. The court pointed out that “mild” traumatic brain injury” is a misleading, relative term – it’s really a serious brain injury that can sometimes persist. Tess wasn’t exaggerating her problems after the accident. Her coping skills, energy and performance as a teacher suffered after the accident. She became irritable, and compared to before, her memory, concentration and mental function were impaired. She also became depressed and socially isolated. The car accident was a cause of these emotional and mental problems, though not the only cause. The court decided Tess had sustained a complicated MTBI and awarded her about $700,000 in total compensation. Written by Janice and George Mucalov, LL.B.s with contribution by STANLEY COPE. Tess’s recollection of the accident was hazy. She was taken to hospital by ambulance. Tests were done and she was sent home with her parents. The next Monday, Tess went back to teaching, but due to pain and exhaustion, she took almost three weeks off work. She completed her teaching term in June, and for another year taught part-time. But she then took consecutive leaves of absence from the Langley school board over the next three years. She mostly did tutoring and other less demanding tasks during this time.
Mission’s Kara Williams is the exception to the rule. Williams has become a key player on an emerging UFV Cascades women’s volleyball team as they make their late push towards the playoffs in the Pacwest. She’s been hovering near the top 15 in the league in digs, and has become a leader both on and off the court for the Cascades. The Hatzic Secondary

students to learn refereeing and tournament organizing. Her high school highlight was helping to lead Hatzic to a fifth place finish in the AA tier in 2015. It was through Chaplin that Williams became intrigued by the possibility of suiting up for the Cascades. “Coach would always take us to Cascades games starting when we were about 16, and it was just always the school I wanted to go to,” she said. Williams began practicing with the Cascades just before her Grade 12 year, and signed with them later that summer. She continued practicing with the team throughout the year in anticipation of her first year of college. She said the months of practicing with the team helped ease the transition to college. “It made for an easier transition, but the schooling environment has been a lot different. Sometimes it can be a bit of a struggle balancing athletics and school, I’ve spent a few nights up late studying.” Cascades head coach Mike Gilray said Williams has been a great fit in her first year. “She’s a very strong and physical player and is very poised on the court,” he said. “She has a great foundation to build on from high school and we’ve been trying to find her best fit on the team and get her reps in a number of positions.” He noticed her leadership ability early. “It was almost like she was a returning player,” he said. “The girls all knew her well enough and the nice part about that is that she’s been able to be a bit of a go between for the new girls coming in.”

District receives $225,00 in federal funding for OPC The District of Mission will receive $225,000 in funding from the federal government for the Mission official community plan (OCP) review. The funding allows the district to ensure the plan is a document that reflects the vision of citizens and best practices to guide the growth of the community over the coming years.
“It has been eight years since the last OCP review and we see pressure to expand urban growth into suburban areas,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. “This needs a vision, and I hope everyone takes part in the OCP process and the neighbourhood meetings to make their voices part of that vision.”
The OCP is developed by the community to identify social, economic, environmental and land use principles and articulates the goals and policies of the community on topics such as housing and density, neighbourood character, economic development, transportation, parks and green spaces, and community facilities.

Outlaws down 2-0 to Flames Mission in action tonight for pivotal game three of playoffs Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
The second season started with a thud for the Mission City Outlaws. The Harold Brittain conference regular season champs opened their first round series against the Ridge Meadows Flames on Tuesday, and stumbled in game one with a 5-4 loss. Ridge Meadows jumped out to a 2-0 lead early into the second period, but Mission’s Kyle Lennea drew the Outlaws within one. The Flames regained the two-goal lead a minute later to lead 3-1 after two. Mission came out flying in third, with goals from Kolby Steen and Lennea, but the Flames regained the lead at 16:29. Steen tied the game up again, but Ridge scored a late power play goal to steal game one from the Outlaws. Mission goalie Jeffrey Veitch stopped 29 shots in the loss, and Steen had a four-point night in a losing cause. The teams played game two on

Last Saturday, the Outlaws captured their first ever Brittain conference title by defeating the Abbotsford Pilots 5-2. The teams traded four goals in the first period, with Baylee Wright and Noah Wiebe putting the Outlaws ahead, only to have the Pilots tie the game up twice. Mission took over in the second period, scoring a pair of power play goals and one even strength to pull ahead 5-2. The second
period outburst proved to be enough for the win. Kolby Steen, Bryce Pisiak and David McGowan all tallied for the Outlaws. Head coach Brad Veitch said the second period was the difference. “We started really slow and it was their lack of discipline in the second period that really opened up the game for us,” he said.
“We were able to capitalize on some of their bad penalties and that put the game out of reach.” Veitch said the win is the culmination of years of effort from the many veterans on the Outlaws. “I’m proud of these guys,” he said. “A lot of them have been here for a few years, and when they first came here this team was
in the bottom. I think it means a lot for the guys in the room. It all started back in August, this was the goal so for them to achieve that goal over such a long period of time is great for them.” He added that it’s been a huge turnaround for the organization. The Outlaws won only eight games in 2012-13, 11 in 201314, broke through last year with 21 wins, and set a new franchise record with 32 this year. “For the organization it shows all the work we’ve done the last few years,” he said. “We’ve built to this moment. We took a big step last year and we’re trying to build a winning culture here. Game three of the first round series against the Flames goes tonight in Maple Ridge, with game four at the Mission Leisure Centre on Saturday. Face-off is set for 6:45 p.m.

The Toyota Safety Sense system will be available on all but the base model: Pre-collision system, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. A technology package will add blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, full-colour heads up display, an intelligent parking and warning system with 12 sonar sensors positioned around the vehicle. This will give the driver the opportunity to park – parallel or perpendicular – without laying a hand on the steering wheel. That’s what an additional $590 gets you along with heated front seats. GAS Even the most loaded editions barely pass $33,000. Promise I’ll get behind that wheel soon. The new Prius uses a revised version of Toyota’s 1.8-litre-Atkinson cycle engine. The official fuel economy numbers are not out yet but internal testing revealed a fuel efficiency of 4.5L/100KM (city/highway combined). The launch drive in Vancouver suggested the 4.5 number is far from being a dream. Okay, we’re off. Normal and Power driving modes suggest this actually might be a fun drive. Normal errs on the side of economy-optimized performance. Power packs some fun into the Prius, without serious compromising fuel economy. The car is a gem in the city as you would expect and spirited on the highway, especially when the Power mode is selected. To be fair, I didn’t feel the need to explore my inner Boy Racer too many times. Looking forward to spending a week in the car when I can truly put it to the test in real world conditions.

Rodney Roland Adey August 4, 1928 ~ February 9, 2016 On the evening of February 9, Rod Webster died peacefully in his sleep, after having lived a rich 87 years. He is survived and missed by his wife, Laura; his sister, Edith Stiles; his children, Bob, Tim, Matthew, Becky, Sarah, and Chris; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also predeceased by his first wife, Faith (with whom he raised his family and shared a musical life), and his sister, Dorothy Befus. From his childhood at a small farmhouse in Westcott, Alberta, to his job delivering telegrams during WWII, Rod gained the tenacity and compassion that would guide his personal life. His ear was as equally attuned to socio-political nuance as it was to music, and he pursued a knowledge and understanding of both with equal vigour, caring deeply for his fellow humans, especially the disadvantaged. He passionately believed and practiced the message of Schiller’s “To Joy”: “All men become brothers.” (Although Rod would have resisted this gendered language in favour of human equality.) Professionally, Rod had a long and distinguished career: S Public school teacher in Saanich for 10 years S Music Director at Fairfield United Church for 10 years S Director and arranger for the Varsity Singers (later named the Amity Singers) for 7 years S Director of the Victoria Choral Society for 17 years During his 21 years as Head of the Ear Training and Theory department at the Victoria School of Music, and the subsequent Conservatory, Rod developed a music pedagogy that went beyond theory as it was then taught, recognizing music as a language, a way of being rather than just a mental concept. The result was a program called Music Language, which became his life work, continued now by Laura. As a music teacher for over sixty years, Rod has nurtured the development of many teachers, performing musicians, and lovers of music. Through them, his musical legacy lives on. Rod requested no service to be held, but that his ashes be spread at Brotchie Ledge in the Juan de Fuca Strait, between James Bay and South Fairfield, where he lived much of his life, and overlooking Dallas Road, where he loved to walk. JACOBSEN Tage (Ted) Knudsen November 2, 1929 ~ February 10, 2016 He was born November 2, 1929 to Frode Jacobsen and Dorthea (Knudsen) Jacobsen in Copenhagen, Denmark. School was too controlling for him by grade 8, so he quit. His Dad was having none of that and forced him to take a trade if he wanted to keep living at home free of charge. He became a cabinet maker and built his own furniture, now antiques, which are still in the family. After school, he then did a short stint in the army before traveling all over Europe and returning home. Then he applied to move to Canada on a lark and was surprised his application was accepted by the Canadian consulate. In 1953, he took a boat to Halifax and then a train to Vancouver to his new home. On arrival and looking for work, he was asked what his trade was. He did not know what a cabinet maker was in English, so when he stumbled, he was asked if he knew how to use a hammer. He said Yes, so they classified him as a carpenter and sent him north to help build the Kemano dam. Once settled, he sent a letter to Jytte Rasmussen in Copenhagen, inviting her to join him. She too came by boat and train to Vancouver where they were married on July 2, 1954. Nine months and 10 minutes later, Dennis was born, followed 18 months later by Jan. Officially, he may have been a carpenter, but he always worked at something for a living, including being a fuller brush salesman, a vacuum cleaner salesman (which he hated), insurance repairs and furniture restoration. He was also very entrepreneurial, building or renovating houses, building children’s toys (Ted’s Toys), or operating a second hand shop. He was a strong believer in the adage “Better to have tried and failed than never to have tried”. He tried often. He lived in the Vancouver and Burnaby area until 1964, when he moved his family to Mission, BC. He bought a 10 acre property in Mission across from the golf course on Nelson Road. The house was tiny, with just two rooms and an outhouse, which was legal. He referred to it as a hamburger shack. When he started renovations and the house was expanded by more than 100%, the health inspector evicted the family because it was a requirement that new houses have indoor plumbing. That did not go over well, because that was exactly what he was trying to do. With the house finished and occupied, the dust from the golf course driveway became choking, so he asked the golf course to lay down oil on the gravel. They refused, which started the summer of the plywood signs which asked the members of the golf course to slow down. Each day, he added another sign and eventually it caught the eye of the Fraser Valley Record. Late in the summer, he created a huge sign in the middle of the field telling visitors the location and fees of a nearby competitor golf course. That did the trick and next summer, the golf course paved their driveway. He was not one to back away from a fight. He wrote many letters to the editor in Fraser Valley Record and was a thorn in the side of many. He was especially critical of people that abused children without justice. He would have loved the current movie, Spotlight, if he had been well enough to go. He would have told you to go see it. He was a Danish citizen to the end and kept many of the Danish traditions alive. He did not become a Canadian Citizen because he wanted the Danish pension and he often talked about Denmark being one of the best countries in the world. But after each visit back to Denmark, he became one of the strongest Canadian supporters you can imagine, for a few years until his memory faded and started thinking Denmark was better. Repeat. He had many Danish friends in the Lower Mainland who he thought of as family. Just a few included Bente and Svend, Alice and Frank, Eva and Einar, Corey and Bjørg, and these friends would get together often for smorgasbords, which included aquavit and beer of course. He was very kind to those less fortunate than him, included hosting foster kids on occasion, hiring the down and out to help with some of his ventures, and was also a Big Brother for many years. Predeceased by Jytte in 2011, whom he missed terribly these last 5 years, Mada, his dog and faithful companion in 2012. Øse, his sister, died in Denmark 2 months before him. Succeeded by Dennis (Jean), their two children, Heather (Wayne) and Miranda, and great grandchildren, Haley and Madison. And by Jan (Elaine) and their children Julia (Darren) and Michael as well as many nieces and nephews in Denmark. He often said he did not want a funeral unless he could attend, so there will be no service. His favorite charity was the Salvation Army. When asked if he lived in Mission all his life, he liked to say not yet. The story can now be revealed that he did, from then until the end of his life. In his wallet he carried a card that said “Please Continue! I’m a bit of a braggart myself, but once in a while I like to listen to a real professional.”, and he would show the card to others he felt were bragging too much. He’ll be pleased that you read this entire story without interrupting him.
