Police apprehend border jumper City may sell Oughtred Hall, TRE VOR CR AWLEY
A man was arrested just outside Cranbrook after running through the Kingsgate Border Cross in a stolen truck on Wednesday morning. At 11:20 a.m., a male in a stolen pick up truck ran the border at the Kingsgate Border Crossing into Canada. Canada Border Services Agency notified local RCMP Detachments and the stolen vehicle was spotted by Commercial Vehicle Inspectors at Yahk heading to-
wards Cranbrook. East Kootenay Traffic Services and Cranbrook RCMP members were able to locate the vehicle and stopped traffic westbound coming out of Cranbrook. Police then quickly executed a safe vehicle stop and arrested the lone male occupant on Highway 3 near Silver Springs Road at 1:05pm. The man is currently in custody and being held in relation to entering into Canada unlawfully, possession of stolen property and driving offences.
The Cranbrook RCMP thanked the drivers that were inconvenienced while the arrest was being made. “This is an excellent example of the level of cooperation we enjoy with our partner Agencies and Detachments in our area,” said S/Sgt. Hector Lee “Your Cranbrook RCMP members involved did an excellent job in getting this vehicle stopped and taking the male driver into custody as safely as possible with minimal risk to the public.”

New iRide program will get kids riding B a r ry Co u lt e r
The Kootenays are known for their bicycle culture, with countless trails and paths dedicated to the sport, and widespread cycling on the streets of the region’s urban centres. And now plans are in high gear to introduce a program into Cranbrook and Kimberley schools, to support that cycling culture and to help kids tap into it. Cycling BC, in conjunction with Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club, the Kootenay Freewheelers and the Wildhorse Cycling Club, is working with local schools to establish the iRide program, a Cycling BC program that teaches cycling skills and basic knowledge to kids and encourages them get involved in the sport and to cycle for health and fitness and as a social activity. John Mandryk, local cycling coach, says the goal is to establish an annual program for Grade 4 students and
needed. Cycling BC is offering a two-day NCCP and iRide coaching clinic in Cranbrook on April 2 (8 a.m) and 3 (5 p.m.), at Gordon Terrace School to certify coaches to help introduce the iRide program in the schools. “You don’t need a wealth of knowledge to become a coach,” Mandryk said. “Some passion for the sport would be good.” The iRide program involves four hours of in-school instruction. Coaches also get paid for their efforts. The students will use their own bikes for the in-school sessions. But since all students don’t have bicycles, organizers are looking for donations. If you have a bicycle you can donate, call Melanie McFarlane at 250-489-9101, or email melmcfarlane9@ gmail.com. As well, an exciting event is planned for the spring — a Kids’ Fondo, set for May 29. This is the same event as the kids fondo that was part
some Grade 3 students. “There will be kids who will take to the sport, and will grow into it and grow up with it,” he said. “It’s a life sport, one you can do all your life.” Mandryk said the proposed program has had a good response from most elementary schools in Cranbrook and Kimberley, and School District 5 has also shown great interest. The iRide program will teach kids basic skills — bike handling and manoeuvrability, safety, mount/dismount, start/stop, scan and signal and rules of the road. Armed with this knowledge and these skills, kids will be set to hit the endless kilometres of bike facilities — including the North Star Rails to Trails, the centrepiece trail in the area. “The theme of Rails to Trails is ‘connecting communities,’” Mandryk said. “This [iRide] is part of that.” First off, coaches are

of the Kootenay Gran Fondo in September. But it has been drawn out into its own separate ride. Organizers hope to make it an annual event. Cranbrook United Church walks for homelessness this Saturday Barry Coulter
The Cranbrook United Church looks to help bring some awareness to a pressing issue this Saturday, with a public event to coincide with Canada’s national walk for homelessness, “The Coldest Night of the Year.” The Coldest Night of the Year is a fantastically fun, family-friendly walking fundraiser that raises money for “the hungry, homeless and hurting” in more than 100 communities across Canada. This year the walk is being held on Saturday, February 20. “While the movement looks for donations — a good idea in as there is such a need —Cranbrook United just wants to raise awareness by gathering at the clock
The Cranbrook church is looking to make the walk an annual event supported by the United Church of Canada and connecting with local charities that help out such groups as Street Angels, the local operation that provides services for the homeless. “This year is just a jump start but we have invited other churches and all our own members to participate,” Lewis said. “Our local churches and charity groups already do a lot, but there are still many people in our area that don’t realize how dire these groups need support from our community. The march begins at the Clock Tower in downtown Cranbrook at 4 p.m., Saturday Feb. 20.
tower at 4 pm Saturday and walking down Baker Street to the church where some hospitality awaits,” said Minister Frank Lewis. “We are inviting other churches to join the wee march, as well as Streets Alive.” Lewis is encouraging participants to bring along some “icons” or symbols, like shopping carts used by the homeless, to “bring something different to the mix.” There will be shopping carts filled with clothing, food and such to represent the basics we can provide. If you so choose, make up a care package that can be given out to any of our own “street angels” along the way or at Street Angels building.

C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
This week, College of the Rockies President David Walls spoke to the Kimberley Rotary Club about what the College means to this area. Mr. Walls has been with COTR since August of 2013. He says access to post-secondary education makes a region like the East Kootenay much more attractive to newcomers. In terms of impact, many people may not realize that the College is one of the largest businesses in the area. It has a $35 million annual operating budget, employs 300 full time equivalent people, and serve 2,266 students, 990 of which relocated to this area to attend the college. COTR has an annual payroll of $27.2 million. COTR is constantly expanding the courses and programs it offers. Right now a student can do university transfer courses, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, start a BSN or B.Ed degree and finish at the University of Victoria, take career diploma, certificate and apprenticeship programs in health, business, tourism, human services and trades. Thee are also adult education, literacy and ESL courses. The college also has satellite campuses in East Kootenay communities including Kim-
affected revenues, even though attendance of the Aquatic Centre increased by 5,117 from 2014 (75,428 in 2014 and 80,545 in 2015). Finally, the report recommends that the City begin charging for use of playfields.
There will be much more discussion on that as it will come to Council in the form of a new bylaw. The next regular Council meeting is Monday, February 22, at 7 p.m.

David Walls, President and CEO of the College of the Rockies berley. In Kimberley, the College is located in former Blarchmont School building, the largest program offered out of Kimberley is the Fire Services Training, which is actually delivered by the Kimberley Fire Department. “It’s a good partnership,” Walls said. “It saves us having to buy expensive equipment and we get the expertise of the firemen.” The latest class from the COTR Fire Training Certificate Program graduates next Friday with a ceremony at the Kimberley Conference Centre. Walls is very proud of COTR’s reputation. The BC Council of Admissions and Transfer sta-
tistics show that COTR is the number one college for University Transfer with respect to student retention rates and GPA graduate achievement after transfer to a BC university. The College was also ranked number one in the world two years running for student satisfaction on a global survey of university and college international students. Walls is also proud of the college’s international partnerships, which include projects in Kenya to improve infant mortality rates and health of mothers.

Slopes for Hope
Why I signed up SABRINA PARK For the Bulletin
My name is Sabrina Park, this March 5th I will be participating at the Slopes for Hopes event hosted at the Kimberley Alpine resort in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The Slopes for Hope event was created to raise funds for cancer research, prevention and support. This is my first year participating in the event and I am very excited to use my love of snowboarding for a good cause and to raise awareness about this disease. I will be participating in the Descending Everest Challenge where I will be snowboarding down the ski hill enough times to be equivalent to the length of Mt. Everest. This year I will do my

Since then she has had numerous Doctor’s appointments, assessments, and treatments. Everyone involved has been working hard to help Karen with her treatments, but when someone you love is sick, it still feels like things are not going fast enough. As her daughter Melanie wrote in a beautiful Facebook post “I never knew what I really wanted for Christmas... In the past few weeks, we’ve found out that my loving Mom Karen McKenzie has cancer. Not the easy kind, where they just nip

a thing out, but the kind where you need a team of doctors and a whole bunch of treatment. So this is when I discovered that what I want for Christmas is chemo. Sounds weird, but treatment and a plan to escort some extremely misbehaved cells from one of the people I love more than anything -- is exactly what I want.” This statement could not be more true and could speak to anyone affected by cancer. In 2014, I lost my grandmother after a terrible battle with cancer. I saw firsthand the mental and physical way in which the disease can affect people, and in this case, someone that I love. When you find yourself in this situation, you want to help in any way possible, and participating in Slopes for Hope this year will allow me to do that. I hope that we can work together to get that little bit closer to helping everyone affected by cancer beat the disease. You can donate towards my Descending Everest challenge at www.slopesforhope.ca, or in person at the Creekside Physiotherapy Clinic in Marysville. Or, if I have inspired you to participate in the event yourself, join me in the challenge and register online today.

Kimberley history: The Way it Was Courtesy of the Kimberley Heritage Museum Archives
KIMBERLEY NEWS February 20, 1957 Chamber Of Commerce Elects 1957 Officers
The first 1957 regular monthly meeting of the Kimberley Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday evening with newly elected President M. Garden in the chair. Minutes of December meeting were read and approved. Arising out of the minutes was an explanation by the President that the wiring of the star shaped light fixtures planned for the main city intersections was being held up by the city’s electrical department’s unavoidable preoccupation with a long list of thaws. He reported that financial support for the project had been excellent, but it seemed unlikely that the city would be able to get them up for the Fiesta: “With 75 freeze-ups yet to be dealt with, the public would scarcely expect to see them hanging street decorations,” Mr. Garden. Al Fabro announced that as soon as weather permit, the granite “post office” marker will be set up in front of the building, making it much easier for visitors to recognize the building. Fabco has been awarded the contract for construction of a pedestal for it. The meeting endorsed the action of the Executive in planning a float for the Fiesta Pa-
rade and also in offering a $15 prize for the window best depicting the Snow Fiesta theme. Response to this has been excellent, with about 15 firms entering the contest. The following chairmen of permanent committees were announced: National and Provincial Affairs, E. Taylor; Membership Assessment and Finance, L. Fewler; Roads and bridges, F.C. The Tourist Information Bureau is to have a new location, the offer of the two lots next to the Pentecostal Church rent free being accepted with thanks. The Tourist Committee was to study the whole project with power to act. It is understood that the permanent location of the bureau will be in the proposed new Civic Centre. Slowness of the public of Kimberley in recognizing such outstanding accomplishments as the winning of the B.C. High School curling title was remarked on and the meeting was unanimous in declaring the Mayor and Council should take the initiative in such matters. The Chamber would back them whole heartedly. A telegram will be sent to the high school team, now at Winnipeg, wishing them good luck.
City Council invites public participation regarding the 2016-2020 Five Year Financial Plan before it is adopted. Copies of the document will be available online at www.cranbrook.ca or for pick up at City Hall starting Tuesday, February 23rd. Written submissions are invited from the public and will be considered by Council at a Special Meeting on Thursday, March 10, 2016. Written submissions must be received at City Hall by 4:00 pm local time, Monday March 7, 2016.
Indicative of the wide and varied problem dealt with by the association were 17 letters from pupils in prairie schools asking for ore samples and information re this area. The first part of the request is turned over to Cominco’s supervisor of publicity at Trail, from whom samples go out. The local Chamber supplies other information. Also in the mail bag was a letter from the Chamber of Commerce of Jerusalem soliciting backing with the Federal Government of the plan to re-route Suez Canal traffic via the Gulf of Aqaba. This was filed. Grants were received from the City of Kimberley and from Cominco. Further efforts will be made by the Public Relations Committee to establish some way by which information regarding arrival time of trains at Cranbrook may be obtained locally after hours. They have been advised by C.P.R. that there is not sufficient business to warrant their employing another clerk at the depot. The meeting endorsed the stand taken by the Meadowbrook ratepayers association in asking the government to change the law by which senior students residing inside the three mile radius from
the school must walk. They already have the support of the P.T.A., school trustees and L.T. Nimsick, M.L.A. The meeting was addressed by Robert Reagh of Lethbridge who, with a number of Cranbrook business men, is preparing a brief requesting a license to establish a high power radio station and broadcasting band in East Kootenay. Operating on 1000 watts at 570 on the dial, the new company would have studios at both Cranbrook and Kimberley and employ a staff of about 20. The transmitter would be located at Twin Lakes, six miles south of Cranbrook. The company would also operate a mobile radio unit allowing on the spot coverage of sports events, etc. Broadcasting would be on a 24 hour basis. Assured that the present booster station broadcasts would not be affected, the meeting endorsed the new enterprise, feeling that while it could hardly be considered a secondary industry, it was definitely a milestone in progress – if approved by the Department of Transport, plans are to be in operation by August of this year.

No More Elevator or Three–Storey World
“N
ot so long ago,” writes Diana Butler Bass, “believers confidently asserted that God inhabited heaven, a distant place of eternal reward for the faithful.” What she is referring to is that Christian faith grew up in an ancient world which imagined the universe as consisting of three storeys. Up there was heaven, where God lived, and where we hoped to go. This would be our eternal reward if only we behaved and believed correctly. Down there — well let’s just say that you didn’t want to end up going down there, and so people were urged from pulpits to live the way the church thought you ought to live, or else! Here, in the middle, is where we lived. Here, on the middle floor, is where our eternal destiny was decided. How we lived, how we behaved, what we believed — it all ensured what our eternal destiny would be. I suspect that many of us grew up in that kind of universe. I’m sure it sounds familiar to many of you. Butler Bass continues that “In this three–storey universe, the church mediated the space between heaven and earth.” She describes the church as “a kind of holy elevator; God sent down divine directions and if we obeyed the directives, we would go up — eventually — to live in heaven forever and avoid the terrors below. Stories and sermons taught us that God occupied the high places, looking over the world and caring for it from afar, occasionally interrupting the course of human affairs with some miraculous reminder of divine power. Those same tales emphasized the gap between worldly places and the holy mountains, between the creation and an Almighty Creator. Religious authorities mediated the gap,
explaining right doctrine and holy living. If you wanted to live with God forever in heaven, then you listened to those authorities (ministers, priests and pastors), believed them, and most importantly, obeyed them.” We no longer live in that kind of three– storey universe. Thank goodness! The three–storey universe had a kind of certainty about it, that things would always be this way, and it would never change. God would always be his heaven, and we on earth would always live under God’s righteous gaze. That certainty crumbled in the 20th century under the horrors of two world Rev. Yme wars, Hitler’s concentration Woensdregt camps, the killing fields of Pol Pot in Cambodia, the terror of Idi Amin in Uganda and Joseph Stalin in Russia. Those horrors continue today in Syria and the Middle East, and with the forces if ISIS and other terrorist groups. As a result, many people concluded that God is no longer relevant. There is no order in this world, it is all chaos and randomness. In the 1960s, some theologians and philosophers proclaimed the “death of God.” Fundamentalist preachers reacted to that by proclaiming ever more loudly that God is still in his heaven judging the world, and we had better be careful or else we’d end up down there. They held on tightly to the three–storey universe. But others have begun to search for a middle way. Neither the death of God nor the way of fundamentalist certainty is an answer. And so a new way of thinking about God is being born. Actually it’s not a new way. This way of thinking has been around ever since the beginning of Christian faith, but it has been mostly a minority view in Christian history. We are rediscovering this minority view today, and it is bringing
life to many people for whom the old way no longer works or makes any sense. Butler Bass notes that in the light of the shooting of 26 people, mostly children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, people began to ask more urgently, ‘Where is God?’ She writes, “If the question was surprising, it is perhaps astonishing that a consensus emerged from the discussion. By far the most often repeated answer, and apparently the most comforting, was that God was ‘with’ the victims.” The elevator is no longer in service. It is no longer needed. The middle way between atheism and fundamentalism is learning to see with new eyes that God is with us; that God is as near as our next breath; that God is present in the ways in which we touch each other; that God is found as we work together for peace and justice; that we discern God’s presence in the care we take of ourselves, in the care we take of each other, and in the care we take of the earth; God is present in the way we love our neighbours, both human and creaturely. Referring to God as the “Ground of Being” the great 20th century theologian Paul Tillich put it this way, “We must abandon the external height images in which the theistic God has historically been perceived, and replace them with internal depth images of a deity who is not apart from us, but is at the very core and ground of all that is.” Goodbye to the elevator. Goodbye to external authorities who are happy to tell us what to believe and how to live. God lives here, with us, and each of us is called to listen carefully to our lives and our world, seeking to discern the voice of God amidst all the noise. September, 1928, Walter Soden of the city works department, while excavating along the two city blocks that constituted Pooley (15th) Avenue at the time, reached down into a two foot hole and pulled up a very old bayonet; a knife -like-weapon designed to fit on the end of a rifle for use during close combat. The Cranbrook Herald, commenting on the discovery, stated, “Examined later by an expert, an officer of the RCMP, the weapon was believed to be of French manufacture and, as nearly as he could judge, 220 years old. The relic, which is now in possession of W.S. Santo, [president of the Cranbrook Board of Trade at the time] is fairly well preserved though it is obvious that it has lain underground for many years.” Almost exactly 30 years earlier, in October, 1898, men engaged in digging the foundation for the Thomas Leask building on Baker Street also made a surprising find. About three or four feet down in the solid ground was a “loaf of cake” crusted with dirt but “in a most excellent state of preservation.” How it came to be there was unknown although the popular consensus, according to the Herald was that “…a party may have camped on the spot sometime in the past, as there is a spring at hand. A hole may have been dug for baking and the loaf accidentally left behind and gradually buried to the depth it was found.” It is worth noting that, aside from the fact that objects of historical interest are often found in holes in the ground, although the rise of Cranbrook as a city may be directly attributed to the coming of the railway in 1898, the people of Cranbrook were not the first ones here. Not exactly news, of course. In the East Kootenay that particular claim belongs to the members of the native Ktunaxa tribe who, according to their (much abridged, in this case) Creation Story, are descended from a water monster by the name of Yawu?nik’ who, in ancestral times, created much trouble while plying the local waterways. A war party of animals including Wasa (horse-tail) and Mayuk (weasel) was formed and chased

Explorer David Thompson found the Columbia River – wiki commons the monster along the Kootenay and Columbia rivers (which were joined at the time) in an endless circle until a wise old animal watching the proceedings suggested trapping Yawu?nik’ in Columbia Lake. Good idea. Once trapped the monster was killed by a red-headed woodpecker, dragged ashore and chopped into small bits by the Chief animal who crumbled Yawu?nik’s white swim bladder and scattered the pieces to form the race of white people, the kidney to form the black, the orange roe to form the yellow and the blood to form the red race who then became keepers of the land. An opposing theory is that the red colour may have simply hiked over the Rockies from Alberta and settled down centuries earlier. Take your pick. If we go with Yawu?nik’, he apparently gave all but the red people a pretty good toss as they all had to come back quite some distance to settle in the Kootenays in years to come. Certainly the other colours made their way here by the time of the Wild Horse Gold Rush of 1864. No doubt this influx or those following afterwards may suitably account for the buried cake loaf. The bayonet, on the other hand, presents a somewhat more intriguing mystery. Was it truly a French bayonet, perhaps left behind by one of the

fur trappers who may have traversed the area in the 18th century, perhaps traveling alongside adjacent Joseph Creek? Or was it simply a Swiss Army Knife of its day, lost by some miner headed to the goldfields who cursed his luck the next time he tried to open his canned beans? The answer will likely never be known as both the bayonet and the loaf of cake appear to have long since vanished. Speaking of relics, during the Cranbrook Pioneer Reunion of September, 1938, Mrs. Paterson, a long-time resident of Cranbrook, brought out a family heirloom: the watch carried 140 years earlier by David Thompson, to indicate when to fire the noon cannon in the town of York (Toronto). Manufactured by David Lewis of London in 1729, the watch likely passed through several hands before being brought to York in 1796 by Mr. Thompson and eventually ending up in Cranbrook. It was, if one may mingle accounts, the little white scattered crumble of the monster’s bladder David Thompson who first came this way with both a desire to create maps and a mission to find the mighty Columbia River which he located it in 1807 and promptly named the Kootenay. In due time the error was discovered and the river he previously named “MacGillivray’s,” became the

present day Kootenay. The French of the day generally referred to the Kootenay River as the “Arc Plat” (Flat Bow) in reference to the flat bows used by the local natives. The French rarely, if ever, named things in English which often meant a general re-naming of things once the English arrived. Actually, throughout North America, a whole lot of French and Native place names weren’t actually renamed but rather bastardized into something resembling English, which is why, the word “Kootenay,” appears as Kutenai (French), Kootenae (Thompson’s Gaelic preference), Kootenai, Kutenay, Kootenie, Cootnahews (explorer Alexander Mackenzie), Cotton-nahews (explorer Peter Fidler) and various other permutations all interpreted from either “Ktunaxa” or sources unknown, depending on who is doing the telling. And so, the bayonet near Joseph Creek, the cake loaf near a downtown spring, Yawu?nik’ in the lake and Thompson on the river all tell of water. Ice recall Taphorn twins ahead of visit with Regina Pats Highly-touted prospects set to make WHL debuts and take first crack at impressing head coach Luke Pierce
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Head coach Luke Pierce is about to get a look at a pair of highly-touted prospects that could add a lot to the Kootenay Ice come the 2016-17 WHL season. Ahead of Friday’s tilt with the Regina Pats, the Kootenay Ice have recalled 16-year-old twin forwards Keenan Taphorn (2000) and Kaeden Taphorn (2000) from the Yorkton Maulers of the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League. “It’s a good opportunity for us to get an idea of where they’re at and for them to get feel for the guys and the league and what things they’re going to have to work on this summer to be ready to come in next year and hopefully be a part of the group,” Pierce said Wednesday night. “We’re not putting a whole lot of pressure on them. It’s just an opportunity to see what they’re like.” While the Taphorn twins physically joined the Ice in the same fashion, jumping on the
team bus as it travelled from Brandon to Regina Thursday, the two officially came to the club at different times and in different manners. Keenan was a second-round draft pick (34th) of the Ice at the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. Meanwhile, Kaeden was then tabbed in the third round (47th) by the Vancouver Giants, ensuring the Yorkton-raised twin brothers were separated. After both sat out 2015 training camps with the Ice and Giants, respectively, Kootenay president and general manager Jeff Chynoweth was finally able to strike a deal to reunite the pair, sending a second-round pick (2016) to the Giants in exchange for Kaeden at the WHL trade deadline. Now, with the Taphorn twins both under the same Major Junior roof, they will make their WHL debuts this weekend as they join the Kootenay Ice for Friday’s contest in Regina and Saturday’s tilt at Swift Current. “They’re obviously

young and there’s going to be some challenges that way,” Pierce said. “But it’s nice having them play back-to-back because we can talk to them after the first game and let them know some things they can work at. “Right now, it’s trying to get an idea of how they think the game and how they’re going to fit in with the way we want to play it. Twin brother Keenan is the slighter of the two, measuring up at 5-foot11 and 158 pounds. In 42 games, he has collected six goals and 25 points. EDMONTON - Matt Dumba and Thomas Vanek each recorded a goal and an assist as the Minnesota Wild ran their winning streak under new head coach John Torchetti to three games with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. Jason Pominville, Charlie Coyle and Mikael Granlund also scored for the Wild (2622-10), who had lost 13 of their previous 14 games under former coach Mike Yeo. Connor McDavid and Nail Yakupov replied for the Oilers (2231-6), who have lost three straight and six of their last seven games. Minnesota started the scoring 10-and-ahalf minutes in on the power play as a big re-
bound came out to Pominville, who ripped a shot past Oilers goalie Cam Talbot. It didn’t take Edmonton long to respond, however. The Oilers made it 1-1 just 28 seconds later when McDavid turned on the jets to take a Benoit Pouliot pass and calmly tuck it into the net past a cleanly beat Darcy Kuemper. It was McDavid’s 10th goal. The Wild regained the lead with seven minutes left in the opening period as a Dumba pass attempt went in off the skate of defender Darnell Nurse on another power play. The Oilers knotted it up again four minutes later as Yakupov picked off a pass and then picked the top corner on Kuemper. Minnesota vaulted
ahead once more five minutes into the second as Vanek took a feed on the doorstep and scored his 16th of the season. The Wild made it 4-2 with four minutes left in the second as Granlund fished out a rebound in front of the net and sent it past Talbot. Coyle got a late empty-netter. The Oilers next play host to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. The Wild are off until Sunday, when they return home to play Chicago. Notes: Minnesota won the only previous meeting between the two teams this season and now has a six-game winning streak in games played in Edmonton. … Missing from the Oilers lineup were Oscar Klefbom (lower body), Andrew Ference (hip),
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (hand), Eric Gryba (knee) and Zack Kassian
(flu). With Gryba out for a month, the Oilers called up Nikita Nikitin
from the AHL, but he was a healthy scratch. … Out for the Wild were
Jonas Brodin (foot) and Marco Scandella (undisclosed).

Richter set to return as Nitros close home schedule against Rockets Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kimberley Dynamiters continue to pursue the KIJHL regular-season title with two games remaining on the schedule and a pair of victories will guarantee the league crown. Friday night (7 p.m.) at the Kimberley Civic Centre, the Nitros play their final regular-season home game, hosting the Golden Rockets (542-1-3) before closing out the campaign in Sparwood against the Fernie Ghostriders (2719-0-4) Saturday night (7:30 p.m.). “We have to get our lineup together,” said Jerry Bancks, head coach of the Kimberley Dynamiters, regarding preparation for the post-season. “We’ve played without some key players for a long time…We’ve got to finetune how to play in the playoffs.” First and foremost, Bancks will be getting arguably his most key player back in the lineup beginning Friday night as captain Jason Richter returns after missing the past 17 games due to an upper-body injury. Dynamiters general manager Mike Reid confirmed Richter had been given the all-clear from doctors and is set to be in the lineup Friday when the Rockets visit the Civic Centre. Richter, of course, led the KIJHL in scoring during the 2014-15 season with 39 goals and 70

The 5-foot-8 Cranbrook native and recent commit to the University of Jamestown was well on pace to once again compete for a league scoring title in 2015-16, having compiled 25 goals and 49 points in only 31 games before being sidelined. Other than Richter, defencemen Justin Meier and Trey Doell remain on the mend, though both have skated heading into the weekend. Tyler Van Steinburg was also absent from last weekend’s lineup. In regards to the title chase, the Dynamiters (39-7-0-4) hold a twopoint advantage on the Osoyoos Coyotes (39-91-1) for the KIJHL crown. Nunavut wins territory’s debut at Canadian women’s curling championship Donna Spencer Canadian Press
GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. - Nunavut’s debut at the Canadian women’s curling championship was dramatic. Geneva Chislett’s team from Iqaluit earned the territory’s first ever victory at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Nunavut downed B.C.’s Karla Thompson 8-7 in the first draw of the pre-tournament qualifier Thursday. The two teams, plus Northwest Territories and Yukon are playing off for a berth in the main draw starting Saturday in Grande Prairie. Chislett wiped tears from her eyes as she hugged third Denise Hutchings, second Robyn Mackey and lead Jenine Bodner following the game. “I’m very emotional,” the skip said. “We just wanted to go out there and try and be competitive and we lucked out with a win. It’s awesome for curling in Nunavut. “It’s the first time we’ve ever been here. It’s a bonus to have a win.”

We’ve got to come out and play as hard as we can every game from now on. “Working on your habits, making sure those are nailed down — being strong on the puck, moving your feet at all times. If you build good habits going into the post-season, good things are going to happen, especially with a team like this where everyone is supporting at the same time. As long as you know your role and you lock that down going into the post-season, it makes it a lot easier.” The Dynamiters have sealed up home-ice advantage through the first three rounds of the

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My ex-son-in-law has temporary custody of my granddaughter, “Cathy,” who is 8. Every time I buy her something, she wants to leave it at my house. I couldn’t understand why so I asked her father. He said it was because Cathy had overheard him talking to his ex (my daughter), fussing that Cathy would lose things they bought her, or she would forget to bring the item back to the parent’s house where it belonged when she stayed overnight with the other parent. I think the problem is that Cathy has her mom and three sets of grandparents who buy her things, and Dad now has a stepdaughter who doesn’t get much (if anything) from her father or grandparents. She is 3 years older than Cathy. I don’t think Cathy needs to be punished because her stepsister doesn’t have much of a relationship with her family. Any help would be appreciated. -- Sad Nana Dear Nana: You have no cause to be sad. Cathy isn’t being “punished.” Your ex-son-in-law is trying to be kind to his stepdaughter. It must be terribly hurtful for her to see how much Cathy is indulged when she is neglected. You should absolutely get on board with this. Tell Cathy you think it’s a great idea for her to keep those gifts in your house so she can use them when she visits. Put a positive spin on it. Make those presents special “Grandma” things. Your job is to provide a place of stability and calm for Cathy, not to undermine her father’s decision to limit how many presents are at his house, whatever the reason. Dear Annie: I recently stopped at my husband’s office and needed to use the bathroom. I was so angry when I noticed a calendar that had half-naked women on it. My husband thinks the calendar is OK, but now I feel as though I’m not good enough or pretty enough for him. There are only men who work in this office, and he says the calendar belongs to everyone. He’s the boss. I want it down! Am I being silly? -- Outraged in Pennsylvania Dear Outraged: You’re not being silly, but you are totally out of line. This is not your office. You don’t work there. If there were female employees, then your husband would be wise to remove the calendar lest he be sued for creating a hostile work environment. Or, if it were common practice for female clients to stop by and use the restroom where they would see the calendar and become upset, it would be smart to get rid of it. But since only men work there and women don’t generally visit, this is none of your business. Girlie calendars have been around forever. We agree that they are sophomoric, but guys have always liked to look. It has nothing to do with your husband not finding you “pretty enough.” Please put your insecurities away and stop telling him how to run his office. It will only lead to trouble. For you. Nisga’a Nation performers enter the B.C. legislature chamber to welcome their third member elected as an MLA Wednesday.
Nisga’a ceremony greets new MLAs Tom Fle tcher Black Press
The staid rules of the B.C. legislature were relaxed Wednesday for a ceremony where Nisga’a Nation musicians welcomed the first female First Nations person to serve as an MLA. Elected to represent Vancouver-Mount Pleasant Melanie Mark is the third Nisga’a member to be elected to the B.C. legislature, after Frank Calder in 1949 and Larry Guno in 1986. She won a by-election for the NDP on Feb. 2 and was sworn in along with Jodie Wickens in Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, who becomes the youngest member of the current legislature.
Current MLAs Carole James and Marc Dalton are of Métis heritage. Cameras and smartphones clicked in the usually restricted public gallery as legislature clerk Craig James administered the oath of office to what he noted were the 915th and 916th MLAs to serve since B.C. joined confederation in 1871. James drew sustained applause when he said the 85seat legislature is now 38 per cent female, “the highest level of representation to ever sit in a Canadian legislature.” Deputy clerk Kate Ryan Lloyd described the first election in B.C., after which 25 MLAs were sworn in by Judge Matthew Begbie after a vote with no organized par-
ties and no secret ballot. “In many electoral districts, a simple show of hands or an open book recording the polls sufficed,” Ryan-Lloyd said. “At that time there were only 3,000 registered voters in the province of British Columbia, who qualified by being white male British subjects who had met certain property and residency requirements.” James reminded the new MLAs they are two of 85, representing a population of 4.6 million people. “Together your presence is a demonstration of how the legislature continues to evolve in reflecting the diversity of our province,” he said.
Foreign buyers lured by loopholes, low dollar Tom Fletcher Black Press
While young people struggle to rent or buy a home in Metro Vancouver, overseas investors are snapping up highend commercial real estate thanks to a low Canadian dollar and loopholes in the property transfer tax, opposition MLAs say. Finance Minister Mike de Jong changed the tax rules in his latest budget to exempt buyers of new homes up to $750,000, and increased the rate from two to three per cent for value over $2 million. But the province continues to reap a windfall on resold homes, the vast majority of the market, with one per cent on the first $200,000 and two per cent on value between $200,000 and $2
Finance Minister Mike de Jong million. NDP housing critic David Eby says the tax not only drives up already unaffordable home prices, it can still be avoided by offshore investors buying up
downtown Vancouver office towers like the Bentall Centre and Royal Centre. The NDP and some municipal officials are also calling for a non-resident tax on resi-
dential purchases, to deter foreign buyers from buying property and leaving it empty as values climb. “There is a huge frustration in Metro Vancouver that spreads all the way up to Squamish, where people are tired of the fact that their wages have no connection to real estate prices, and they are fed up,” Eby said. The province is moving to restore citizenship and residency declarations for real estate purchasers, but de Jong says he needs to collect data to measure the problem of non-resident investors before taking action. Data are also needed for a commercial property technique developed to avoid the property purchase tax when it was imposed in 1987.
A “bare trust” separates legal and beneficial ownership, allowing the property to change hands without paying the transfer tax. De Jong said bare trusts and share transfers, where the registered owner doesn’t change but controlling interest does, are long-accepted business practices. “We actually do encourage people to come to British Columbia and invest,” de Jong said. “The purpose here is to ensure that they are paying their fair share, that they are abiding by the laws that British Columbians and Canadians must abide by, and to ensure that we have to make sure we have the information necessary to enforce those rules.”

Ottawa drops appeal of Omar Khadr’s bail sor, which fought hard to keep Khadr behind bars for the duration of his sentence. Khadr, 29, was freed on bail last May after almost 13 years behind bars - four of them as a convicted war criminal. He has since been living with his lawyer, Dennis Edney, in Edmonton without incident. The Americans captured a grievously wounded Khadr in Afghanistan in July 2002 when he was 15 years old. He was soon sent to Guantanamo Bay, where he was charged with several war crimes before a widely discredited Military Commission. Khadr ultimately pleaded guilty in Octo-
