More than 40 sheds were broken into at the Alberni Valley Golf Club late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. The many cart and equipment sheds,
located to the left of the club’s restaurant, were found Thursday morning with their locks busted off, but so far nothing has been reported missing, golf club director Doug Richmond said.
“I looked in some sheds this morning that had some pretty good clubs in them and they were all there,” Richmond said. “But not all have been searched because some of the shed owners are away

He said this kind of break-in could interrupt the business’ operations and that the police are appealing to the public for any information on this matter. Richmond said a different set of sheds on the club’s property were broken in to about two weeks ago and some expensive golf clubs were stolen. Farmers cautious on plans Abattoir could provide other agricultural possibilities, like increasing economy, food security: Dyer From A1
Collins runs Arrowvale Farm with his wife, Ann. “Not only in time but in cost for vehicles and fuel. And then we have to turn around within two or three weeks and repeat the trip.” Collins, who raises beef cattle at his Hector Road farm, said farmers in the Valley could benefit from having a local abattoir and that facilities in the past have shut down due to a change in Federal Meat Inspection protocol. “Largely what closed a lot of [local abattoirs] down was this whole thing about you have to be a federally licensed and inspected plant and it takes a considerable investment to get your facilities upgraded to a point where you can pass those inspections . . . and I think most [farmers] weren’t prepared to put that kind of money in,” Collins said. According to a press release from the ACRD the lack of a local, provincially inspected abattoir has been identified by the ACRD Agriculture Development Committee as a key roadblock in supporting the livestock industry in the region. Dyer said when the district adopted

the Alberni Valley Agricultural Plan in 2011 that the primary goal was to increase local food security.
An abattoir here would be a good thing from a business perspective. – Bob Collins “A big factor of that is to increase production and support the economy side of the agriculture sector,” he said. Ron Caldwell, general manager at Hertel Meats, said it is important to know what the ultimate goal is in bringing an abattoir back to the Valley.
“I think the No. 1 question is how many animals, and what do they want to achieve?” Caldwell said. “The number of animals is important because what are you going to do, kill one a month? And you have a building sitting there rotting? Doesn’t make any sense.” Hertel Meats had a slaughter facility on their Beaver Creek property for more than 30 years that they shut down roughly five years ago and turned into a smokehouse. The ACRD received funding to complete the feasibility study from the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC, which gave $5,000. The ACRD contributed $2,000 in-kind services and $500 was donated

capacity of livestock production in the region. “An abattoir here would be a good thing from a business perspective,” said Collins. “Whether or not there’s a volume of animals here that would justify anybody doing it is another matter altogether and I guess the study will find that out.”

he province of B.C. could do well to look at Alberta before leaping too far into liquefied natural gas, according to journalist and author of Slick Water: Fracking and One Insider’s Stand Against the World’s Most Powerful Industry, Andrew Nikiforuk. “It’s a very volatile industry,” said Nikiforuk. He will be speaking on the issue of fracking this Thursday, Feb. 25, 7 p.m. at Echo Centre. “We’ve had a global glut of LNG compounded by a significant drop in demand in Asian markets, particularly in japan, south Korea and China which means that the LNG markets are going to be pretty volatile for probably the next decade and to tie your fortunes to an industry like that is probably not a prident thing to do,” he said in a telephone interview. Nikiforuk doesn’t think that B.C. has taken Alberta’s lessons into account. “B.C. has not learned the lesson and it has repeated all the same mistakes,” he said. Instead of caution, the province has rushed ahead with
development. “The province doesn’t have a white paper on LNG development. The province has never done a paper on the risks and liabilities associated with rapid LNG development. The province hasn’t even produced a paper on the cumulative impacts of hydraulic fracturing on water resources, wildlife and First Nation rights in northern B.C.

oon, the Alberni Inlet won’t be the only place fish are swimming at Harbour Quay. The inside of the former Clocktower Gallery has been painted a vivid ocean blue and the aquariums are being installed this week as West Coast Aquatic prepares to open up their stewardship centre. A soft opening (as opposed to a grand opening) on May 1 will coincide with the Race the Train event. The first thing you’ll see as you walk in will be a giant sea creature, said
West Coast Aquatic stewardship executive director Sheena Falconer. “When you walk in, we’re putting graphics on the far wall—we’re down to between whales and octopus— so you kind of get a sense right off the bat,” Falconer said. To the right of the entrance are three tanks—freshwater, estuary and intertidal—meant to show the life cycles of salmon. “In the freshwater tank, the salmon are swimming in a figure eight around a vegetated salmon,” said Falconer, adding that having visitors be able to see the salmon will personalize the importance of

same message. “The messaging for all of these displays is the same, there’s going to be personal stories about all the animals.” That messaging is key to the stewardship centre’s mission, she says. “Everything is catch and release here. We want people
to understand that we’re not just randomly taking these animals out of their environment for entertainment, we’re doing it because we think it’s important to deliver a message about these animals’ homes,” said Falconer. “I’m really passionate about that and it took a lot of
soul searching before I considered taking animals out.” With the ‘catch and release’ style of the aquarium, there will be a constant stream of new marine animals for visitors to get to know. “We’ll cycle turtles and frogs and aquatic insects,” said Falconer. There will be opportunities to see the animals face to face. “There’s the aqua dome so if you go under, there’s a bit of a dome over your head and you’re looking through the water.” Visitors will then pass though an ocean tunnel where people will be able to see underwater creatures like jellyfish. “It will be backlit so

Touch tank creatures will also be cycled in and out of the centre or will be there on a more permanent basis as part of a conservation effort. “Some will be animals that have been caught and can’t go back into the wild so it’s either death or stay here and other animals will be here because say, we’re fry salvaging, and they’re staying here with us temporarily.”
“I have no idea why the province went with Conair,” Coulson said. As far as the Hawaii Mars, Coulson said the waterbomber’s firefighting days were likely coming to an end. “We have been in every board room trying to sell the Mars’ services in firefighting and don’t see an option any longer for the Mars in this business,” said Coulson. “We will look to see who might be interested in operating the aircraft going forward or where it could be retired and looked after.” The province could not be reached for comment before the News went to press. he provincial government has again passed over Coulson Aviation for any of its wildfire season aerial firefighting arsenal. This will come as a harsh decision to those who revere the red and white Hawaii Mars waterbomber. How many people in the Alberni Valley rushed out of their homes and businesses to watch the Hawaii Mars fly overhead last summer for the first time in nearly two years? We will have to accept that it was likely her swan song. The waterbomber is 50-some years old, and we understand it can be expensive to keep operating, no matter how effective its massive payload is. We can also understand—sort of—if other countries are hesitant to take on an aging plane they The BC gov’t have never seen in has again action before. But we don’t passed over understand why Coulson countries such as Aviation for Australia, Mexico and the United States any of its are willing to utilize wildfire season Coulson Aviation’s other aircraft, but firefighting. Canada isn’t. Coulson offered his retrofitted C-130 for testing this year, and the province declined. The government says they want to test jets for cost-effectiveness, and the C-130 is a prop-driven aircraft, which is what they are currently using. Fair enough. But as last season’s record-breaking fire season showed, the province needs as much firefighting power as it can get. Why not try out the C-130 and the jet and compare the two? Is the decision purely financial? Is this some sort of political game? We would sure like to know. — ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Scientists have very serious concerns about the impacts of fracking and cracking all these rocks underground. – Andrew Nikiforuk According to Nikiforuk, there are no upsides to the LNG industry—not even jobs. “That’s the first fallacy. LNG is not a job making industry, it never has been, never will be. It’s a capital intensive industry. “You’re spending billions of dollars to build very high
complex machinery that then only requires about 100-200 people to run. When you have to spend billions and billions of dollars just to employ 300 people, that’s a terrible job creation plan.” The industry’s claims about job creation are overblown, he adds— and that includes the estimates that Steelhead LNG and the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, who are partnering on a proposed $30 billion LNG plant at Sarita Bay. Estimates given by former Huu-ay-aht executive director James Edwards included 3,000-4,000 construction phase jobs and 300-400 operating jobs. “I would say that almost all those job figures are inflated and certainly for the amount of jobs that will be created during the construction phase.” Most of the jobs involved in constructing LNG plants will be created
in China, where the plants will be constructed with only basic assembly taking place in B.C., he said. Nikiforuk has harsh words for anyone thinking that LNG facilities don’t have a direct hand in causing the environmental issues outlined above. “That’s a kind of weird disassociation from reality. You can’t have LNG without fracking and you can’t have fracking without making earthquakes and contaminating groundwater and industrializing forests of northern B.C.” The long-term impacts of the LNG industry will be felt on Vancouver Island, he asserts. “People on the Island also need to start wondering, okay, so if three proposed terminals are actually built, what are they going to do when natural gas runs out in northern B.C.? Nikiforuk said. “The Island actually has a lot of coal seams. The government has
explored these coal seams, they know that they are methane rich. So in the future, when these LNG terminals in B.C. demand that
the coal seams on the Island be fracked in order to keep their facilities full? “Those are the kinds of long-term questions

Butterflies support hospice care Since 1982, the Alberni Valley Hospice Society has sustained compassionate care and human dignity, and provided education and advocacy to individuals and their families facing life-limiting illness, death, and bereavement. Many know us through our residential hospice facility, Ty Watson House, where we provide palliative care for up to four residents at a time. The residents of Ty Watson House, and their loved ones, benefit from the home-like environment and community of caring staff and volunteers who maintain the program. AV Hospice

Avalanche warnings still extreme
Warren Lee offers free seminar for women Feb. 27 SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
VICTORIA - Be prepared when you explore B.C.’s backcountry this season. That’s the message the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Emergency Management BC are sending in the wake of yet another deadly avalanche in eastern B.C. “This weekend has brought more tragedy to our mountains because of avalanches,” said Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness. “Our hearts break

for the families of those who have lost loved ones to B.C.’s backcountry this season. “I love the outdoors. It’s what makes B.C. so remarkable. But it can be dangerous, even when you equip yourself with the proper training and tools for survival,” she said. Avalanche Canada’s warning is still in effect. People trekking outdoors should be aware of the snow conditions in the area before heading out (check the avalanche forecast at www. avalanche.ca).

You’re walking home from work, you have your earbuds in your ears so you can listen to some music on the way. Suddenly, someone comes out of a doorway and grabs your arm. What do you do? Warren Lee, owner and instructor at Dragon Martial Arts in Port Alberni, wants to teach women how to react to such a situation. He is offering a women’s self-defence class on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “In a perfect world we shouldn’t need self-defence; but this isn’t a perfect world,” says Lee. Lee is the only certified Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor in Canada. The selfdefence workshop will include moves from this particular martial art, which focuses on defence as opposed to fighting. “It was developed for the smaller and weaker to defend themselves from the bigger and stronger,”

John Kenchenten and Dennis See in December. “I’m on Christmas vacation and I’m out here with some of my band members, some of my friends, and we’re just out here working on filming some stuff because it’s so beautiful out here.” It was a brief moment of calm before Half Moon Run took off on a monthslong tour. “After the Christmas break we’re going to tour the United States and all through Europe because we just released our second album, Sun Leads Me On, in October and now it’s going to be a matter of touring that all over the world right through the summer festivals and all that.” Though Molander prefers being in the

got enough songs together to record an album and we got a record deal and things sort of took off from there. We started doing better and better in Montreal and now in parts of Europe and all over the place.” But Molander remembered the summers spent in the Valley when he and his band mates needed a location to film an independent project with the aid of locals

I think it’s fairly well known now that it’s a hard way to make a living and its very hard to become a professional musician,” he said. These days, Molander does vocals and plays the guitar and keyboard in the band. “So I was going to McGill and I was studying psychology, not really as a backup plan but just because I had a bit of a interest in psychology, but I always had my eye

and when I think about my memories and my childhood a lot of them are based here,” he said. “But the band itself was formed in Montreal.” Molander was in Montreal in 2010 to study psychology at McGill University—or to pursue whatever opportunities came his way. “I was always a musician as a child and always wanted to be a musician but
studio to stage, the band’s tours have been full of highlights for him “We went to Iceland and that was spectacular. With Mumford and Sons we played in front of some really large crowds which is a really big rush— stadiums and that kind of thing.” He also met one of his idols. “One of my idols is Lou Reed from The Velvet Underground and we were able to perform on stage with him in New York one time.” But whatever the next few years might bring, Molander’s grateful to have made it this far. “It’s wonderful, I feel so lucky to be able to be able to make my living as a musician. It’s a dream.” 7465334
It’s been quite the journey for Half Moon Run’s Conner Molander. From Vancouver Island to Montreal to all over the world, the past five years have flown by. Molander, now on tour with the indierock band, Europe, spent many of his formative years at Sproat Lake. “I actually spent a fair bit of my childhood here in Port Alberni because my great-grandfather came over from Sweden in the 1940s and built a cabin that served—and still does serve—as our family vacation home,” he said. “So I’ve been coming here since I was little.” The Alberni Valley helped make him who he was and inspired him when Half Moon Run was just getting off the ground in Montreal. “A lot of the things that make me who I am came from here

JOIN THE MOVEMENT AGAINST BULLYING ON FEBRUARY 24 Learn the early warning signs of bullying…
Verbal: If your child reports being called names, being the recipient of racist, sexist or homophobic jokes, or being spoken to in an offensive or suggestive way, this can be a form of verbal bullying. Cyber: Social media, email and text messaging has become a way for
bullies to spread malicious messages or photos. In the era of digital media, this type of bullying has increased considerably. Physical: Some bullies engage in physical attacks, including hitting, kicking, spitting, or other forms of physical confrontation. Destroying personal property also is considered physical bullying. Indirect: Gossiping and spreading nasty rumours about a person is another form of bullying. This type of bullying may go hand-in-hand with cyber bullying. Signs your child is being bullied Parents can recognize certain signs that their child is being bullied at school. Bullied children frequently make excuses to avoid going to school. While the desire to stay home is something many children may express, those who are bullied may do so much more frequently. Bullied children tend to avoid certain places and may be sad, angry, withdrawn, or depressed. They may have trouble sleeping or experience changes in appetite, and bullied youngsters’ academic performance may suffer. Also, parents may notice that children return from school missing some of their belongings.
Fresh Steps Behaviour Consulting: A Path to New Beginnings Presents:
Signs your child is the bully Parents may not want to imagine their children bullying other students, but bullies do exist. Children who bully other kids have strong needs for power and negative dominance. They may find satisfaction in causing suffering to others. Some signs that your child may be a bully include: • easily becoming violent with others • having friends who bully others • blaming others quickly • comes home with belongings that do not belong to him or her
• getting in trouble with teachers or school administrators • picking on siblings • not accepting responsibility for actions There are ways parents can teach their children to act properly when faced with a bully. First, parents should explain that bullying is not the child’s fault and he or she does not deserve to be picked on. Next, parents can let children know that being assertive but not violent with bullies may diffuse the situation, as some bullies thrive on the fear of their victims. If the bullying behaviour continues, the student

Children grow and develop their personalities in various ways. While many youngsters are teased or receive some good-natured ribbing at some point in their school careers, some teasing can eventually turn into bullying. The National Education Association estimates that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Furthermore, more than 70 percent of students report incidents of bullying at their schools. Although children in lower grades have reported being in more fights than those in higher grades, there is a higher rate of violent crimes in middle and high schools than in elementary schools. According to the association Make Beats Not Beat Downs, harassment and bullying have been linked to 75 percent of school shooting incidents. Bullying can take many forms, and learning the warning signs as a parent can help prevent harassment and potentially dangerous situations.
