Attack of the Lake People dinner theatre draws good crowd BY TREENA MIELKE

Brother Clifford, the nosy preacher and handyman played by Roger Giesbrecht looks on as Peri, played by Carol Kreutz looks horified that her husband, Graham, played by Christian Lohmann has a wax apple stuck in his mouth during a scene in the 21st annual Dinner Theatre at Liberty Hall, Attack of the Lake People performed by Springdale Players Theatre Society. See story and pictures on page 11 and 17. Treena Mielke Photos

Liberty Hall was packed to the rafters Saturday night with an enthusiastic crowd who showed up for the 21st annual dinner theatre, and, as in the past, the crowd was not disappointed. The two-act play, Attack of the Lake People, performed by Springdale Players Theatre Society, was a light, enjoyable murder mystery that kept the audience on the edge of their seats or else practically rolling in the aisles in laughter. It was funny, and at times, almost believable as the family-get-together had a few credible scenes which could, in reality, happen in almost any family somewhere, somehow. The characters all played their parts well, and all members of the cast, seemed perfect for the roles in which they were cast. Roger Giesbrecht, who played Brother Clifford, a preacher and a handyman, had the audience on pins and needles as he did his part to help uncover the mystery of ‘who done it.’ continued on page 14

RIMBEY REVIEW 3

Giebelhaus sees proposed Rimoka Lodge as conspiracy of silence DO YOUR PART

BY TREENA MIELKE A former Rimbey mayor is angry about what he believes to be a conspiracy of silence with regards to the new proposed Rimoka lodge. Earl Giebelhaus believes the public has not been informed about the deal with Rimoka, laying at least part of the blame on the Review editor, Treena Mielke for not printing an article regarding the questions he asked CAO Donna Tona at the last council meeting. “Most of the taxpayers in Rimbey do not have a clue about the fact that our council, some of the members of which have deliberately been kept in the dark, has paid an as yet undetermined amount of money to aid a developer, that was

the entire responsibility of the developer under a signed development agreement dated Aug. 8, 2008,” he said in a letter he brought into the Review office. Giebelhaus wants the public to be aware that council under the guidance of CAO Donna Tona signed another agreement known as extension and novation agreement with SJC Development Corporation. Giebelhaus believes council violated their own municipal development bylaw by entering into the three party agreement (the town, Rimoka and Ponoka County). He questioned why CAO Donna Tona initialled each page of the document and was the signatory for the town

on that document. Giebelahus said the new proposed MDP has serious omissions that were put in place by the present MDP to correct the misuse of public funds. “At this point we are not sure if there are other agreements that are not being made known. Giebelhaus also asked

This clause is not open to public view, which leads Giebelhaus to believe there is factual information that is being kept secret. “I can see why the developer would say no, but what has our temporary CAO got to hide?” Tona said she had no comment regarding Giebelhaus’es accusations.

Treena Mielke On The Other Side Hearts and flowers. Presents. Cards. Wow! Nice! I was almost a Valentine’s Day baby and on good years it seems like I reap the rewards of an almost Valentine’s Day birthday by getting all of the above

Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: President: Mary Kemmis

how mature and dignified I had become overnight. I refused to run to the bus, but walked sedately, my steps measured and deliberate. The bus driver did not seem to get that dignified, mature ladies do not run, even if they are late. He honked his horn in frustration. I was a little insulted, being I had my hair in this perfect French roll, but I ran anyway. I fell breathless into an empty seat and ended up bobby pinning my French roll back into perfection while sending darts with my eyes (made up with my new kohl almost black eyeliner) into the back of that silly, old bus driver.

I was living on Vancouver Island at the time. Across the road from the bus route, the magnificent Pacific Ocean churned and rolled and the tide mysteriously moved in and out as if set by an unseen hand and an invisible clock. But I was 16 and I cared nothing about the tide or the ocean. I only wished my hair would stay in place and I could fit into a new school, new friends and, most importantly, with my brand new family. I was, after all, an orphan now and I told myself it was time to grow up. Five years later, I turned 21. It was another significant birthday and I remember it well because

it was the day I had my first-born child christened. He was tiny and beautiful, and not once did he cry throughout the ceremony. And when the minister lifted him up to show him to the congregation, I swelled with motherly pride. And so, here it is another year and the birthdays have come and gone with alarming regularity, just like the mysterious tide that flows in and out, as if set by an unseen hand. And every year I get older, but somehow, I notice, not that much wiser. I’m still waiting for that part. Who knows? Maybe next year!

Driver’s license test is not true testament of maturity

in double quantities. I am truly blessed. So, why do I find myself sitting at my cluttered desk on Feb. 16, (the day after my birthday) feeling all down in the dumps and so much older than I did on Feb. 14 (the day before my birthday)? It’s weird how one day can make such a difference. I remember my 16th birthday. I actually felt much more grown up on that day than the day before when I was only 15. I remember walking out to meet the school bus with my long dark brown hair twisted into a French roll, feeling quite dignified and mature. I wondered if the bus driver could see

There is a lot of personal progress that is measured with obtaining a driver’s licence. The process begins in the teenage years with a learner’s permit. After a few years of experimental maneuvers in a beater (or Mom and Dad’s new car) you can take both the written and the road tests

and get a probationary GDL class 5. A couple more years have to go by, and if you keep a good driving record you can take the test and get the GDL status removed off your licence. The stretch of years that go by while moving your way up the driver’s licence ladder shows a climb towards adulthood. If you play your card rights you can have a learner’s at 14, a probationary at 16, and a full blown driver’s licence at 18 years of age. The piece of plastic becomes very important: you show it when ordering an alcoholic beverage; you show it when you apply for a mortgage at the bank; and you show it with your credit card when you buy a new washer and dryer. None of the latter scenarios would

require you to show a high school diploma. The driver’s licence acts as the important tool for ascending through adulthood. But the driver’s licence doesn’t actually gauge a person’s social or intellectual progress; a licence simply means you can drive a car. Societal constructs unconsciously hinge personal progress to the acquisition of a driver’s licence. There is nothing intrinsic in a driver’s licence to show a person knows responsible alcohol consumption habits, knows how to navigate mortgage negotiations with the bank, or knows how to do his or her own laundry. It has been a while since I got my licence, but I remember that the written

portion of drivers test did include some questions on driving and alcohol consumption. The test never asked me when a good time to buy a house was, or if I knew to separate the colours from the whites when I washed clothes. I think it would be wrong to test a teenager on the pros and cons of a fiveyear fixed rate versus a three-year variable rate mortgage, but the test can sneak in a few questions on smart borrowing practices when buying a car. The driver’s licence isn’t really a stamp that can certify someone worthy of the title of adult. Maybe that’s what a high school diploma is supposed to do. I think it would be worth it to start considering combining the two.

A hypothetical model would look something like this: In order to get a learner’s permit, a person would have to prove Grade 8 or 9 completion; to get a GDL class 5 a person would have to prove Grade 10 or 11 completion; and to get a full driver’s licence a person would have to show his or her high school diploma. If the model included minimum grade requirements at each increment, the driver’s licence could act as a sufficient measure of someone’s ascent towards adulthood. But my model doesn’t exist. In real life no one asks to see your diploma at the bar, the bank, or the appliance store—they just want to make sure you’re 18.

Online dating is no sure bet

Stu Salkeld Pipestone Flyer In the late 90’s as the Internet became dominant, a Saturday Evening Post cartoon seemed to sum up the issue of Internet interactions. The cartoon showed a dog sitting at a computer talking to another nearby canine. The dog at the computer says, “On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.” There’s been some romantic activity over the past 10 or 15 years that has me concerned. No, I’m not some prudish school official who measures skirts at high schools, so relax. The activity that has me concerned is Internet or online dating. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the concept, online dating is actually rather similar to online shopping, except instead of high-efficiency light bulbs or 5-w40 synthetic oil, you’ll be looking for a better half. The core of the experience involves creating your “online profile,” which is an honest, straightforward (ha!) description of yourself for others on the prowl to peruse. I know as someone who’s worked in journalism for over 20 years, asking somebody to honestly describe themselves, shortcomings, faults and all, is probably too much to expect. Two weeks ago American media were reporting on the tragic story of 13 year old Nicole Lovell, who was murdered by an 18 year old man whom she met on the Internet. Lovell’s friends said she was apparently in an adult relationship with the man, and that other men were contacting the 13 year old girl as well. The girls’s father, David, was quoted as saying, “You could tell these older guys had fake profiles. Some of the things they said were way too grown up for the picture they had.” Police in Edmonton this past week even had advice for people using free online classifieds site Kijiji, which

is affiliated with eBay. Police were warning about phony ads and “bad guys” who were posting them. People were answering fake ads, going to meet people and then getting robbed or assaulted. Referring to the Saturday Evening Post cartoon, no one knows who is at the other end of a computer connection. He may claim to be the most pious fellow in Wetaskiwin who happens to look like Tom Cruise too, or the lady you met may claim to be a millionaire who looks like Jennifer Aniston to boot. How do you know? I’m not saying online dating is necessarily bad. Anyone who’s played the dating game knows how time-consuming and disappointing it can be in the real world. But here are some tips to keep you safe, especially for you parents out there whose kids may be frequenting dating websites. First, don’t post any kind of actual contact information, not even an email. Create a new email address just for your dating adventures. If you post a photo (you don’t have to) don’t use one that could identify you. Many people even use a codename like “BillyBong” rather than their real names. Remember that anyone you meet could also track you down on social media like Facebook. Secondly, when writing your own profile be honest. Most of us don’t like to ponder our failures or expound upon our shortcomings, but it’s a fact we all have them. If you’re dishonest and find someone you’re interested in, “coming clean” could have a disastrous (and karmic) result. Thirdly, remember most people don’t look or sound perfect in real life. Whether that profile you’re interested in shows a guy who looks like Josh Brolin driving a Mercedes-Benz in Hawaii is real or not, that’s a red flag. Fourth, protect yourself. Never go to meet someone you don’t know. There’s a word for someone like that. “Stranger.” Get to know people first; any decent man or woman will understand caution. Turn and run when you get any, and I mean any, requests for money. There are professional scammers who roam dating sites looking for lives to destroy. Stu Salkeld is the editor of the Leduc/Wetaskiwin Pipestone Flyer and writes a regular column for the paper.

Free wagon rides at Bentley museum’s Family Day open house BY JUNE NORVILA The weather cooperated fully with the horsedrawn wagon rides around Bentley that remain so popular. They were sponsored by the Bentley Museum for their Family Day open house. No icy places this year and no cold freezing wind or snow. Horses Duke and Doc were busy touring Bentley with multiple loads of happy people during the afternoon of February 15. Owner Stuart Lyster

and daughter Holly Lyster provided free rides for families / individuals and lots of youngsters who sat on blanket-covered straw bales placed on their wagon. Many took repeat rides and some people even took pictures and close up ‘selfies’ with the calm horses. Free coffee, hot apple cider, or hot chocolate, along with cookies, were served inside the main building (the Pico house) to encourage visitors to sit and visit for a while

Acute care in Rimbey hospital receives donations from Winfield Lions Club

On February 5, the Winfield Lions Club presented the Rimbey Health Services Donation Committee with a cheque for $10,000, to be used for patient care and comfort enhancements at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. On hand for the presentation were from left to right, Brenda Denommé, Ellen Abbot and Janice Gill representing Rimbey Health Services Donation Committee, and Dave Willows, Barry Clarkson Albert Brandl and Doug Goltz from the Winfield Lions Club. SUBMITTED Acute Care patients at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre are getting a boost, following a generous donation from the Winfield Lions Club.

On February 5, the club presented the Rimbey Health Services Donation Committee with a cheque for $10,000, which will go towards the purchase of new equipment for the hospital, including a Sit to

Stand patient lift for the Emergency Department and Acute Care unit. “Having a lift like this will help us safely move patients who have difficulty getting to a standing position under their

own power,” says Acute Care Unit Manager, Janice Gill. “It will assist staff in transferring patients from a seated position to standing, without the need for staff to manually lift the patient. These lifts make patient transfers safer and easier, for both our patients and our staff. “We’re very grateful for the generous donation from the Winfield Lions Club.”

Although there are detailed safety procedures for lifting or transferring a patient without a lift, manually lifting a patient to their feet can pose injury risks to both patient and staff alike, and can sometimes result in slips,

falls, and exertion injuries. Unlike overhead patient lifts, the Sit to Stand lift is portable so can be used for more than one patient on the unit. Since this lift can easily be maneuvered around the unit, it means manual patient transfers are greatly reduced. In addition to the purchase of the lift, the donation will also be used towards purchasing items from the hospital’s wish list. For the Lion’s Club, whose motto is “We Serve,” giving back wasn’t a difficult decision. “It’s a benefit to everyone,” says Barry Clarkson, president of the Winfield Lion’s Club. “Lots of residents here use the Rimbey Hospital, and when we were approached about the opportunity to consider donating, it was a good fit with our club.” The Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre provides care and services to residents in Rimbey and the surrounding area, including those in Winfield, Alder Flats, Breton, Crestomere, Bluffton, Hoadley, Bentley and Eckville.

Calkins…Currently BY BLAINE CALKINS The House Resumes It is my pleasure to return to the House of Commons as your Member of Parliament for the new constituency of Red Deer - Lacombe. As this is my first Calkins… Currently since the election, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported me during the election by volunteering on my campaign or casting a vote on Election Day. I am humbled by your overwhelming support and I am honoured to represent you in Ottawa. Certainly, across the country, the results were not to our liking, but I am confident that under the leadership of the Interim Leader of the Official Opposition, Rona Ambrose and the new and returning Conservative Members or Parliament, we will hold the Liberal Government to account to ensure that all Canadians are best served. A Moment on Electoral Reform Canada inherited the Westminster style of Parliament from the Palace of Westminster when we were granted responsible government. The Westminster style of Parliament, including “first past the post” elections have served us well for nearly 150 years and are deeply entrenched in our democratic history. Since the 1950s, Canadian Governments have consulted their people in a referendum when trying to alter their electoral systems and it remains imperative that you, as Canadians, are consulted directly on any proposed fundamental change to Canada’s democratic process. Promises Made, Promises Broken For the first several months of 2015, Canada was respected on the international stage, we had our fiscal house in order, our economy was on track to continue to grow, and taxes were the lowest in over 50 years. Canada was moving forward confidently on trade deals with Europe (CETA) and the Pacific region (TPP), and we were seen as a dependable ally in the fight against terrorism and ISIS. Fast Forward to October 19th. Voters were sold a bill of goods that was anchored on the mantra Real Change. This real change was supposed to be a different way, a sunnier way to supposedly

restore confidence in the House of Commons. If the first 40 days of this new government are any indication of the Real Change Justin Trudeau is going to bring Canadians, voters may be asking for their change back in 2019. So let’s have a recap of these first few days: Liberal promised to relocate 25,000 refugees by the end of 2015, which we now know was unrealistic. Promise broken. Trudeau also deceived Canadians by saying he’d take our CF-18’s out of the fight, which he has apparently reneged on. Promise Broken. Trudeau also indicated he’d only run $10 billion deficits for the first few years of a Liberal mandate. The fiscal update passed in early December by the Liberals indicates they will run up the debt for Canadians by more than double that. Promise broken. However, the Liberals have kept some promises: Canadians taxes will be going up, you can save less of your hard earned money in a Tax Free Savings Account, and families will be losing benefits under the Universal Child Care benefit, promises which weren’t worth keeping. To further exacerbate problems for working Albertans, Keystone XL was cancelled by president Obama just a few days after Trudeau became the PM, and Northern Gateway Pipeline seems all but dead now, as Trudeau has promised to ban tanker traffic off the west coast. Then, there’s the Liberal entitlement attitude, creeping back in! Remember Trudeau saying that income splitting

and the UCCB wasn’t a good policy, because it only benefitted rich families like his? However, once he took office, with the ink barely dry on his swearing in papers, he ordered Cabinet to approve the salary cost to hire two nannies to raise his children. Mr. Trudeau believes he is entitled to his entitlements and he believes that you and I should be the ones who pay for them. Finally, keep in mind the Liberals spent almost 3 billion dollars internationally in their first 30 days in office, all of which were not accounted for in their platform. The rising cost of Liberal commitments will have to be offset by some sort of revenue generating tool (taxes). Justin Trudeau woke up on October 20th with a hangover realizing he won the lottery, and in true frat boy mentality, he is intent on spending every dollar possible as recklessly as possible. Senate Appointment Process Earlier this month, Democratic Institutions Minister Marayam Monsef announced the appointment of the “Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments.” Unfortunately, this is cannot really be considered a reform measure. An unelected and unaccountable board of individuals will be making recommendations to appoint an unelected Senate. It does not matter who is on the panel, as the lists that the panel creates are secret and non-binding. Prime Minister Trudeau can still appoint Senators who don’t appear on any list. How is this more democratic? continued on page 12

Legalization of Marijuana Not As Easy As Justin Trudeau Thinks Another one of Justin Trudeau’s campaign promises was the legalization of marijuana. It was a pretty simple promise to make, but the fact is, the legalization of marijuana is actually a very complex issue. Within Canada, marijuana is addressed in many pieces

of legislation such as the Canada Health Act and the Criminal Code and involves working with the Provinces. Amendments to these pieces of legislation on their own will be a monumental task, but in addition, Canada is part of three international treaties – all of which criminalize the possession and production of marijuana. dysfunctional family. Beulah, Peri’s mother played by Elaine Hawkins was the true monarch of the family, and simply wanted everyone to get together and enjoy a good meal and try and get along. Her brother Clarence, played by Ernie Closs, kept trying to keep his rebel son, Stutz played by Josh Gundlach, in line. Don Leighton, who

played the grouchy old major, actually meets his demise in the play, or at least what is thought to be his demise. It is later discovered he has simply ‘gone fishin’. Cal Kitchen helps round out the family with his role of Dennis, a glad-handing insurance salesman and as husband to Teddy, Clarence’s daughter and Sutz’ sister.

Teddy loves playing with stuffs animals and practically loses her mind when th grouchy old major accidentally shoots her favorite Teddy Bear. Journey Giesbrecht, plays Dr. Mimi, the local physician, veterinarian, grocery store owner and scout troop leader. Her youthful presence helps add to the charm of this little old fashioned al-

most true to life murder mystery that keeps everyone guessing. The play is directed by Trish Matthews, Connie Jensen is stage manager, Ryland Kitchen is the props manager. Daniel Matthews and Megan Matthews looked after sound and lights and the stage crew is comprised of Merv and Karen Steeves, George Spencer,

Laverne Steeves and Justin Steeves. The Liberty Hall Board is responsible for working, building, cleaning, setting up and managing the event, the Springdale Ladies Club cooked and served the meal and did the clean up. Tickets for the Feb. 26 Attack of te Lake people are available at Stationery, Stories and Sounds.

BY TREENA MIELKE When June Norvila stopped to get her mail last Wednesday she discovered a note on the door of the post office saying it was closed until repairs were done. She said there was an officer on site and suspected the post office had been broken into. A call to Sylvan Lake RCMP confirmed Norvila’s suspicions were correct. Const. Steve Kumar said the RCMP responded to a call about a break in at the post office at about 5 a.m. on Feb. 17. “The front door hadbeen broken into and they gained access to the back.” The thieves were able to simply take the mail out of the boxes, he said. RCMP are still investigating the break in. The post office in Rimbey was also broken into recently and several mailboxes were pried open. Mail theft is an ongoing problem throughout the area and RCMP encourage anyone who notices any unusual activity happening around rural mail boxes or post offices to notify the RCMP at once.

East coast curler drops in to visit Rimbey’s club BY TREENA MIELKE

Mike Porte from Saskatchwan and Rimbey curlers Brent Ladieu, Ken Smigorosky, Lorne Kriz, Tyler Hagel, Herman Wegmann and Kevin Woosley enjoyed a game with Rob Swan (front) from Harvey Station, New Brunswick last week. Treena Mielke Photo

Members of Rimbey curling club welcomed an unusual visitor last week. Rob Swan from Harvey Station, New Brunswick dropped in to play a game with the local curlers, not an unusual feat in itself, but the fact that Swan has made it a goal to curl one game in every curling club across Canada, does give the visit a bit of a twist. Now in his second year, Swan said it will take him about eight more years to complete his goal, but he is determined to make it happen. He visited about 103 clubs last year and is up to 53 so far this year. He said he is hoping to bring more awareness to the sport of curling and also to raise funds for renovations to his own curling club in New Brunswick. He does not ask for donations, but raises money through the sales of a Daily Ritual Clothing line of T-shirts and other items through Asham, who is sponsoring him. “I am willing to curl with anybody,” he said. “I have curled with juniors and seniors and even curled with a vision impaired curler.” Swan said his job as a service electrician in remote camps in Alberta and British Columbia requires him to work three weeks in the camp and then to have two weeks off so he is able to take the time to indulge in his goal of curling across the nation. He is single and admits to being “married to the game.” He pays for his travel expenses out of his own pocket. He enjoyed his time in Rimbey. Rimbey is very lucky. From March 10 to 13, Rimbey will once again have the honourable responsibility to host the 2015 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships on behalf of their major sponsor ATB Financial. This year’s event is to be the PeeWee ‘C’ division playoffs. This tournament is the final deciding event for the top seven pee wee hockey teams and its host all representing their respected zones within the ‘C’ divisions from all over Alberta, and should prove to be some very exciting and emotional hockey watch. Hosting this provincial event marks the

third tournament within the past five years that Rimbey has been awarded this prestigious stage in which to put the spotlight on our national sport and, this year, on our local Pee Wee hockey team as well. In the past the Rimbey Midgets and Bantams have been the teams to watch and they put forth a very respectable and entertaining show for the spectators and the Pee Wee ‘C’ team will live up to that and more in this year’s tournament. Having this distinction to host this event is a great example for how our town is perceived as a hockey ambassador within our home zone and around our great province.

With this year’s event the tournament will open on a Thursday night with the our Canalta Pee Wee Rimbey Renegades playing the second game of the evening. There will be an

FCSS expanding its programming BY TREENA MIELKE

Carolynne Jensen, SIRC coordinator with Rimbey FCSS/RCHHS stands by the sign announcing FCSS’s new program, Welcome to Canada which is available to help newcomers settle into the community. Treena Mielke Photo

In order to reach out to the community on an even broader scale, Rimbey FCSS is expanding its programming to offer two new programs. The Welcome to Canada program is available for anyone who is new to Rimbey and needs some help to get settled. “We don’t want to limit the program to just those who have come here from another country,” said Carolynne Jensen, SIRC Coordinator with Rimbey FCSS/RCHHS. We want o include anyone who is new to the community.” Executive director Peggy Makofka said the program is important as it will give newcomers a chance to contact FCSS to learn about where schools, churches and other important community establishments are located. The program will also be available to assist new-

comers in filing out necessary government forms. Rimbey FCSS will work with Central Alberta Refugee Effort (CARE) from Red Deer to learn more about helping newcomers settle into the community. Volunteers are needed for the program and anyone who is interested in helping out may contact Carolynne at FCSS. Another program which will be expanded through FCSS is the seniors information and referral program. “Our board has suggested that we broaden our scope in the community and be able to help even more people to fill out forms,” said Jensen. In keeping with the board’s direction, FCSS has changed the name of the program to community and seniors information and referral. “This just means that while we will still help

seniors, we will also help people under the age of 65 with forms such as passports, AISH, CPP and disability,” she said. Jensen said she has contacted Alberta Supports and Service Canada and learned that all forms are available on line and all have instructions with them. Toll free numbers for both Alberta Supports and Service Canada are also available. Jensen is pleased that the program has expanded, noting the previous program left a gap in services offered. “We will continue to do all that we have done for seniors, but now we’ve added younger people to the program as well. We are simply opening up our service to the entire community.” For more information about either of the programs contact FCSS and ask for Carolynne or Peggy at 403-843-2030.

The Rimbey Victim Services Gala turned out to be a night full of fun, good music, great food and plenty of time to socialize. Victim Services client services co-ordinator Patricia Jones said the event was wonderful. “It went very well, tickets sales were good and the silent and live auctions both went very well and we came out ahead financially.” Jones said the entertainment, Tracy Miller and the Little Miller band was a sure hit and Miller’s country songs had the crowd up on the dance floor. Cst. C. Dutz was the master of ceremonies for the event and MLA Jason Nixon was also in attendance. The RCMP dressed in red serge for the occassion and their scarlet uniforms were a bright splash of colour for the gala which was held Feb. 13. Auctioneer Dean Edge was a crowd pleaser as was Andrew Reeleder and the bid catchers who helped make the auctions a success.

programs,” he said. In the evening he will speak to dads, themselves. “It will be an interactive discussion. I want them to share their stories,” he said. Dillon is part of the Alberta Father Involvement initiative and will speak at the Rimbey provincial Building in the afternoon to service providers and again at 6 p.m. to the men. Pizza and wings and root beer will be available in the evening. Dillon is part of the speaker series sponsored by Rimbey Early Child Development Coalition.

Rimbey AGRIM Centre was a hot place, Saturday night when cowboys gathered from far and wide to compete in a non carded jackpot rodeo. The jackpot rodeo featured five events and garnered close to 21 horse riders, 30 bull riders and 10 team ropers. Corey Glenn, who organized the event along with his wife Stacey is pleased with the jackpot, noting cowboys came from such places as Edson, Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan and Claresholm to participate. He explained the cowboys each pay $100 entry fee; $90 of that fee is put in a pot, and it is divided among the winners. Chance Barass won first place in the novice horse

division and second place went to Dawson Hay. In the junior bull riding Carter Sahli took first, second went to Luke Ferber and third was won by Jesse Bedson. In the bareback riding, Dylan Bilton won first, second went to Tate MacDonald and Pascal Isabelle captured third. The saddle bronc was won by Lane Cust and second place went to Clem Lowry. In bull riding Gunner Fuchs won first place, second place went to Col Torkelson and Roy Braybrook took third. The next jackpot rodeo to be held at the AGRIM Centre in Rimbey will be March 5. The finals will be held April 2. Rough stock practices are held every Wednesday.
