Controversial industrial park plan rebuffed by ALC Cities, not developers, should lead projects, commission says Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Bradner residents are hailing a decision by the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) to refuse a developer’s request to convert farmland into an industrial park. The proposed plan – which was forwarded by council to the ALC in 2013 – would have seen 224 acres removed from the Agricultural Land Reserve and used for industrial purposes. The project was adjacent to an existing industrial park on Langley’s eastern edge and included 22 parcels just north of Highway 1 and west of Lefeuvre Road in Bradner. Developer Ron Emerson BRADY had suggested the plan would create 5,000 jobs and billions in economic activity. But the proposal drew opposition from local residents, who said the farmland should remain protected in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). While council voted to forward it to the ALC in 2013, Couns. Patricia Ross and Henry Braun – now the city’s mayor – opposed the plan at the time, with Ross worried about the loss of farmland and Braun saying he didn’t have enough information about costs to service the property. On Tuesday, Pat Brady, whose
family has lived in the area for 80 years and who lives across the road from the proposed development, said he was “more than happy” to hear the project had been rebuffed by the ALC. “There’s still some wise people around in this province,” said Brady, who
helped lead opposition to the plan. “Thank goodness for the land commission.” The proposal generated strong feelings among Bradner residents when it came before council. While some local property owners supported the plan, many others
asked council to not forward the proposal to the ALC, citing concerns about traffic and changes to the fabric of the community. A public information meeting drew more than 100 people, and 30 letters opposing the development Continued on A3

Homeless camps come down, but housing remains scarce Twelfth Night UFV THEATRE PRESENTS:
by William Shakespeare
A fence now surrounds the Gladys Avenue site occupied by a homeless protest camp until last week. city didn’t have to resort to obtaining a court injunction also signaled that the city’s relationship with its homeless population has improved. But Draper said major problems remain, although credited the city for using a “softer approach” on homeless issues. Draper said 11 people were still living at Cyril and Gladys before the order came to move. One person has since found permanent shelter, and a few others have found room in temporary detox and transition housing. But a portion of the campers have just moved to other locations, he said. Draper said the Riverside temporary shelter hasn’t been as effective as the city says. He noted that the homeless were being housed with varying levels of success well before
the shelter was established, but that many of those who find shelter soon find themselves back on the street. He said there remains a lack of support – and permanent housing – for those coming out of hospital or treatment and detox programs. “That’s not shelter, that’s being housed,” said Draper, who said more information is needed about how many people are finding permanent, long-term housing. He added that service providers are “stretched to the max” and that more funding is needed for outreach workers and case planners. But while Draper and Braun disagree about the level of progress, they agree that Abbotsford’s lack of rental housing remains a major barrier to helping those living on the street or in parks.

Developer has 60 days to appeal decision were forwarded to council. Others spoke out for the project when it came to council, including local property owners like Brian Sanders, who said at the time: “It just makes so much sense on so many levels.” The panel suggested that it would rather consider the removal of a large block of properties as part of a “broad planning review” initiated by a local government, rather than at the request of a single developer. The panel noted that in 2005, the ALC excluded 444 acres of land for industrial use as part of Abbotsford’s City in the Country Plan. It said if more industrial land is needed here, the city should

be the one leading discussions about the removal of properties from the ALR. Only a portion of the land in the Bradner proposal is currently used for agricultural purposes, with large portions covered with bush, trees or otherwise not in use. However, the ALC generally considers land potential, rather than current use, in order to discourage speculators from halting agricultural activity in order to gain approval for developing land. The panel said that while a report “suggests some limitations to the agricultural capability of the properties, these limitations do not form the sole basis for exclusion.” The panel said agriculture land in B.C. varies in capability, and that the properties are able to support
farming. Emerson – who did not respond to a request for comment – has another month to appeal the decision. And on Tuesday, Braun told The News that council may need to take a close look at the Bradner lands, as the city continues work on its new Official Community Plan. He noted that the land is also included in the Fraser Valley Regional District’s regional growth strategy as a possible location for industrial development. At a recent council meeting, it was noted that around half of the industrial lands removed in 2005 have been developed, with rapid development recently expected to soon push that number closer to 70 per cent.

Two prominent, long-standing protest homeless camps in Abbotsford came down late last week. While Mayor Henry Braun hailed the removal of tents from the side of Gladys Avenue and a nearby city-owned property on Cyril Street as a sign of progress, the fundamental causes of Abbotsford’s homelessness problem remains unaddressed, according to Ward Draper of 5 and 2 Ministries. Residents of the Gladys camp first erected two years ago had been told they needed to leave the site by Feb. 10, after the city passed a bylaw designating the street-side area as a highway. The campers at Cyril, which is technically a park, were told they must take down their shelters during daytime hours, as per a court ruling last year. Both sites are now behind fences. Braun said the camps’ removal showed the importance of the 40-bed temporary winter shelter on Riverside Road, which he said had been filled to 98 per cent capacity since opening. He noted that 20 more people have also been found housing either in permanent homes, or in detox or transitional housing. That means shelter has been found for 60 people who were homeless, he said. “I think it’s fantastic, and I’m hoping we can extend it,” he said. Braun said the fact that the
Last year, it was reported that the city has a 0.6 per cent vacancy rate for rental units, with the cost of housing also on the rise. “We need just housing that people can afford in general,” Draper said. Braun concurred, and noted that homes will also be needed for dozens of refugee families arriving in the city this month. Construction on a new 31bed supportive housing project is anticipated to begin next month, but Draper and Braun say more such facilities – along with a general increase in the city’s rental housing stock – are needed. Braun blamed the city’s previous anti-harm reduction policy for stalling developments on such projects for years, and said Abbotsford should have at least a couple such facilities operating already. Braun said the city would wait until the current project is built before considering asking for funding for a second. He said he hasn’t yet heard from the federal Liberal government about its promise to provide billions in dollars for a nationwide affordable housing strategy. In the meantime, he’s hoping that faith groups and others will offer support and housing to homeless men and women who are trying to turn their lives around. “When people come out of detox or they’re stabilized coming out of the temporary weather shelter, they’re going to need some help.”

Chase’s birthday wish: $9,000 for Starfish packs Youngster collecting donations for kids’ food program Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Six-year-old Chase has always had a kind heart and loves helping others, according to his mom, Eliza Miller. When the two were discussing his upcoming birthday on March 22, Miller mentioned that they have too many toys in their home. She asked Chase what he could do for his birthday to avoid collecting more. “First he wanted to give away all his things. Then he realized he likes his things and that would make him sad,” Miller said. She said her son has always been curious
about the food bank and other charities, and Chase wondered if his friends would give items to the food bank instead of giving him toys. Miller had a suggestion for him. She knew about the food bank’s Starfish Pack Program, which provides backpacks filled with food for kids to take home on the weekends. Chase loved the idea. “He said, ‘I have $50 in my piggy bank. If all my friends gave me a dollar, I’ll have $50 plus my $50, and then we will give that $100 to the Starfish program,’ ” Miller said. The two made a poster to promote Chase’s
plan and posted it on Facebook. Within 48 hours, $534 had been collected, enough to meet the $525 cost of filling one backpack for one child for an entire school year. Chase was so encouraged by the response that he changed his goal. He is now aiming to collect $9,000 to fill 17 backpacks. Miller said every day when Chase comes home from school,
he looks at the list of donations and says: “Wow, Mom! People really care about the kids!” Play Abby (2043 Abbotsford Way) is collecting donations on Chase’s behalf. Miller asks that people write their name with their donation because Chase would like to thank everyone personally. Donations can also be made via PayPal
at paypal.me/chasesbirthdaywish. For more information, visit “Chase’s Birthday Wish” on Facebook. Donations will be collected until March 31. For more information about the Starfish Pack program, visit starfishpack.com. The program is coordinated locally by the Abbotsford Rotary Club and currently provides backpacks to 263 children in the community.
The Facebook picture that started it all: Chase’s request to raise $50 for the Starfish Pack Program in Abbotsford has ballooned into a goal of $9,000.

Fraser Valley Stage (FVS) brings the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls to the Abbotsford stage for five performances from March 2 to 5. With a cast of more than 40 singers and dancers, FVS will bring the antics of high-rollin’ crap shooters, their scatter-brained girlfriends and the resolute mission members to the stage with lively dance routines and classic songs such as Luck Be a Lady, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat and I’ve Never Been in Love Before. Guys and Dolls conquered Broadway in 1951, running for 1,200 performances and winning five Tony Awards. “It’s a period classic. ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Wednesday, February 24, 2016
A win for all concerned It took two years, a Supreme Court case, an immense amount of time and effort by service providers and city officials, and a great deal of public money, but the squalid Gladys Avenue homeless protest camps are finally gone. Far more important than the mere end of an eyesore, the absence of the tents and trash in the downtown core represents a huge measure of progress in terms of how homelessness is now being dealt with in this city. From the embarrassing incident of city staff spreading chicken manure on a homeless squat on Gladys in 2013, the City of Abbotsford now has a far more progressive policy regarding street people, a temporary 40-bed shelter has been built on Riverside, and work is soon to start on a permanent supportive housing project for the homeless. To say this city has come a long way would be an understatement. Conversely, to believe the problem has gone away, would be a grave error. Homelessness remains a serious chal-
lenge in Abbotsford, as it is in many communities. There is an acute shortage of appropriate housing in this city. Service providers for the homeless are stretched thin. Support systems dealing with core causes such as addiction are overloaded. In particular, mental health facilities are woefully inadequate. The vast majority of those long-term solutions are far beyond the scope and means of city hall, which cannot assume the responsibilities of the federal and provincial governments. In respect of the latter, it must be acknowledged that Abbotsford would not have made the progress it did in terms of addressing homelessness without provincial support and funding. The past few years have brought this issue into sharp focus, demonstrated there are effective ways to deal with it, and defined future needs. Despite all the continuing challenges, it’s a major step forward for all concerned.

The more things change The Feb. 17 News article “Hospitals to lose beds” gives a clue as to why Christy Clark’s approval rating is among the lowest for premiers across the country. Even the recent tweaking of MSP premiums has avoided anything that might resemble progressive taxation. We know that MSP premiums bring more to the government coffers than do natural gas, mining and forestry revenues combined – in spite of the charges paid the American company for collecting this not-so-hidden tax – between 10 and 15 per cent annually. Perhaps if MSP premiums were instead collected via the income tax system, local hospital beds could afford to stay open. But there’s a problem here: MSP premiums enter “general reve-
nue” rather than being directed to health care. You’d think we’d have sufficient general revenue from other sources. After all, our government collects dividends from both B.C. Hydro and ICBC. Of course, there’s a problem here as well. B.C. Hydro does not itself have money in the bank – that particular entity has to borrow to pay dividends to our province. Borrowing results in interest, interest results in higher costs to B.C. Hydro, and those costs result in higher electricity rates for the B.C. taxpayer. And I doubt I have to remind anyone of the direction ICBC rates are heading. We also know that debt in our province continues to increase, with the overall figure expected
to top $70 billion by next year. And all this is considered “good fiscal management?” In the May 2, 2008 issue of the Vancouver Sun, Harvey Enchin wrote a very insightful article on that year’s provincial budget. Here are a couple of excerpts: “When Carole Taylor introduced the provincial budget in February, I questioned how the government could call it balanced when it clearly showed spending in excess of revenue.” … “Since the government conveniently omits Crown corporation debt when it calculates ratios based on ‘taxpayer-supported ‘debt,’ it seemed reasonable to me to ignore the revenue as well.” The more things change, etc.
Squatters weren’t invited Where does the City of Abbotsford get off threatening private property owners with fines ( Allwood Estates/Onni ) that they were in contravention of the city’s Good Neighbour Bylaw for not cleaning up squatter camps? These property owners did not invite squatters to our community or give them permission to camp on this site. Permission was given to these squatter’s by city hall by not allowing the Abbotsford Police Department to deal with this problem at the start. Every place you look in this city there is garbage from squatter camps and abandoned camps on city property. Seems like the City of Abbotsford is in contravention of the city’s own Good Neighbour Bylaw. The courts ruled in favour of the city in regards to squatter camps and still nothing has changed. It’s time the Salvation Army, 5 and 2 Ministry, B.C./Yukon Drug Survivors and the out-of-town squatters quit dictating how this city is run. You, Mayor Braun and your councillor’s were elected to oversee this community, not to cater to the above groups. Do what you were elected to do. We require responsible government to move forward. If city council is unable or unwilling to make the hard decisions required to repair the damage caused to our residents, they should step aside. I’m sure the residents of Abbotsford do not wish to become Portland North. C. Howard

Every roadway a racetrack for many motorists A follow-up to your Feb. 24 story regarding speeding on Downes Road. This road is only one of almost every roadway in Abbotsford, dare I say the Lower Mainland, that is apparently a racetrack for so many motorists. Anyone driving the speed limit is consid-
ered a hindrance and must be passed at the soonest, even if it is the most dangerous, moment. And stop at a stop sign or red light before turning? Are you crazy? It may slow the person down, and we all know they are more important than anyone else, even if they run you
down proving it! Many of these careless drivers I observe have an “N” or “L” on their vehicle, meaning they haven’t had a licence that long. Did they obtain the privilege to operate a motor vehicle driving like that when they received their licence? Enforcement is al-
most nil. Many of us have become so sloppy in our driving habits, we are not aware of breaking the road rules. Crosswalks around here are not safe. Just try stopping to let a pedestrian cross and see how many drivers simply attempt to get around in order not to

City looks cheap and seedy I’ll start off by saying, Sec. 18 bylaw 2500-2015 “any council member can ask for motion to reconsider…” and I hope someone on our city council has an epiphany and does it. As interveners, the City of Abbotsford asked for 98 conditions (many concerning health and safety for its citizens) to be met before endorsing the expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Kinder Morgan has refused these conditions. Personally, and I don’t think I’m alone, I think Abbotsford comes off looking cheap and seedy accepting a “gift” and dropping opposition before
lose 1.3 seconds of their important life, even if it may mean taking
t
the NEB’s decision. Beyond that, it might just be a good idea to rescind this vote and check the ethics on behalf of the citizens who do not feel the city is acting in their best interests. Finally, I’m not sure what other interveners are to make of Abbotsford’s acceptance in lieu of any concessions to the health and safety of the thousands who may be affected by a spill: the promise of a new clubhouse for their golf course. An Abbotsford man who was charged last year with nine counts of contravening the B.C. Securities Act has been fined $1,000 after pleading guilty to five of those charges. John David Briner, 38, issued the guilty pleas on Feb. 9 in Vancouver provincial court and was fined $200 on each count. The four other counts were stayed. Briner, a former securities lawyer in Vancouver who lives in Abbotsford, was charged in March 2015 for failing to comply with a ban issued by the B.C. Securities Commission. His difficulties with the authorities date back to 2009, when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a complaint in court, saying Briner participated in a fraudulent scheme to artificially inflate the market for shares in a penny stock company. Briner reached an agreement with the SEC that included a five-year ban from acting as an officer or director of any issuer and participating in any offering of penny stocks. He was also given a $25,000 civil penalty and ordered to pay back another $52,000. Following the agreement with the SEC, the B.C. Securities Commission also issued Briner a five-year ban in 2011. In July 2014, the Law Society of B.C. found that Briner committed professional misconduct when he misappropriated more than $50,000 from a client. He was disbarred in November of last year. Briner again became the subject of SEC action in January 2015, when the commission alleged that he orchestrated a scheme which entailed creating shell companies supposedly exploring mining activities. The matter was settled last September, when Briner consented to an order that permanently prohibits him from acting as an officer or director of any issuer and bans him from participating in any offering of a penny stock. He also agreed to pay back almost $22,000 in gains and $50,000 in civil penalties. At the time the criminal charges were laid, Briner was involved in starting a “seed library” in Abbotsford which invited the public to trade extra seeds for non-organic, non-GMO and heritage seeds. He is also a co-founder of the Aldergrove-based Music Access Society, a non-profit group that provides music instruction to kids in Aldergrove.

A Grade 12 student at Yale Secondary in Abbotsford is hoping to spread the word about a Special Olympics campaign. Roshan Gosal, a Special Olympics coach and the B.C. representative for Special Olympics Canada Youth Activation Council, has become an advocate for the Spread the Word to End the Word program. The campaign is designed to raise awareness about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the “R” word – retard or retarded – and encourage people to pledge to stop using it. Gosal, with the help of his fellow Special Olympic volunteers and athletes, is organizing “R” word awareness booths from Feb. 29 to March 4 at 10 local high schools. His goal is to collect 3,000 pledges. Gosal organized the campaign in Abbotsford for the first time last year, when 1,871 pledges were collected. The provincial government will use Abbotsford-based Conair Group’s Avro RJ85 airtanker this year to battle forest fires, Finance Minister and Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong announced Friday. The aircraft are already in use in the United States and in France and offer a quick response and high speeds to fight blazes in remote areas of the province. While just one of the planes will be in use this summer, de Jong said the deployment will give the B.C.’s Fire Protection Branch a chance to evaluate the plane and determine how it can be best used. “In a jurisdiction like British Columbia, where fires can start in
very remote locations, it just isn’t possible to position traditional aircraft in every single sector, so having an aircraft that in less than half an hour can be over the target, depositing retardant, on a repeated basis, is a huge advantage,” de Jong said. The construction of the RJ85 has already created 50 jobs. It was also announced that Conair will follow the RJ85 project by enhancing a Bombardier Q400 airtanker, a project estimated to create more than 30 jobs. And CAE Inc. announced that it was planning to build a wildfire training and simulation centre in the province that will allow pilots to train to fly the RJ85. A location for the centre has not yet been announced.

A former Abbotsford woman who operated payday loan businesses that bilked investors out of millions of dollars has been ordered to pay $37 million to the B.C. Securities Commission (BCSC). The BCSC panel announced on Friday (Feb. 19) that it has fined Doris Elizabeth Nelson $18.5 million – the difference between the money deposited by investors and the money paid out to them – and an administrative penalty of $18.5 million. As well, the panel permanently banned Nelson from the province’s capital markets for fraud, illegally distributing securities and lying to a commission investigator. Nelson operated a payday loan business through a group of companies – represented and promoted collectively as the Little Loan Shoppe – that was, in actuality, a Ponzi scheme. Her first Little Loan Shoppe opened on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford in 1997, followed by one on First Avenue in Mission, and stores in Maple Ridge and Chilliwack in 1999. She eventually expanded to other locations in the Lower Mainland and Washington State. Nelson moved with her new husband to the U.S. in 2001. The Little Loan Shoppes closed in the
early 2000s, but by then, Nelson had begun taking telephone loan applications. In 2006, she expanded to the internet. The scheme fell apart in 2008, and the next year the Little Loan Shoppe declared bankruptcy.

Artwork on display at Reach and Kariton Gallery A silent auction has begun for artwork that is part of the Oxygen for the Soul program. The auction is underway at The Reach Gallery Museum (32388 Veterans Way) and Kariton Gallery (2387 Ware St.), featuring a total of 38 pieces divided between the two locations. The winning bidders do not get to keep the pieces, but their names will be featured, along with the artists, on a recognition plaque when the artwork goes on permanent display at the new Holmberg House hospice. The facility is slated to open in April on the Dave Lede Campus of Care next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Funds raised from the auction support the work of the Abbotsford Hospice Society (AHS). Tax receipts are issued for the winning bids. Oxygen for the Soul art exhibits and the silent auction will close to the public on March 13, but final bids will be taken on Thursday, March 17 during the Oxygen for the Soul Reception and Live Auction. The event takes place at The Reach at 6 p.m., and tickets are $25. Tickets are available online at abbotsfordhospice.org, by calling 604-852-2456, or at The Reach, AHS or the Abbotsford Arts Council.

UFV’s Mandelyn Erikson tips the ball over the net against the CBC Bearcats on Friday.
Cascades set for Provincials The UFV Cascades men’s and women’s volleyball teams head into the Pacwest provincials with a home court advantage of sorts. Abbotsford’s Columbia Bible College hosts the three-day event, which means a short drive for the Cascades, and a familiar environment. The men closed out the regular season with two straight 3-0 wins over the CBC Bearcats in a home-and-home on Feb. 18 and 19. UFV finished the season in fourth place, with a record of 14 wins and 10 losses, and open the provincials Thursday night against the College of the Rockies Avalanche. The men won three of four games against the Avalanche in the regular season. The Cascades women ended the season with a record of nine wins and 15 losses, after dropping their final two games to the Bearcats. UFV finished in fifth place and kick off the provincials against the Douglas College Royals on Thursday at 6 p.m. The women lost all four games they played against the Royals during the regular season. The Bearcats men’s and women’s teams both failed to make the playoffs. The tournament runs until Saturday, with the women’s gold medal game occurring at 6 p.m., and the men’s taking place at 8 p.m. For more information, visit pacwestbc.ca/ championships/volleyball/index.

Pilots take control of series
Ben LYPKA
Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Pilots are one win away from advancing to the second round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. The Pilots are up 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, after a second straight double overtime win at home on Friday. Mitchell Plevy potted the clutch winner at 3:37 of the second overtime to seal the win for Abbotsford, but just like every game in the series so far, it wasn’t easy. The Kodiaks came out strong in the first period, building up a 2-0 lead, and the Pilots knew they were in for a long night, said captain Joel Balzer. “The mood was down after the first period and I think guys were frustrated with themselves,” he said. “It wasn’t like we had a really bad period, but we just made two really bad plays and they capitalized.” “They came at us hard,” said Pilots head coach Jim Cowden. “They’re a good team, and we knew we had to battle to win. They were up on us 2-0, but at the

Thomas Pickering of the Pilots pushes the puck forward during game three of the Abbotsford’s playoff series with Aldergrove on Friday. BEN LYPKA Abbotsford News end of the day I think we’re a good enough club, and we just had to relax and not force things. We did a better job of that in the second.” The Pilots turned it on the second, dominating play and scoring three unanswered goals. Balzer got the Pilots on the board at 10:30, and Philip Gauthier tied the game, with 5:53 left in the second. Plevy gave the Pilots the 3-2 lead late in the second to give Abbotsford its first lead.
“Guys started skating and moving the puck in the second,” Balzer said. “Guys were playing as individuals in the first, but once we start moving the puck, I think we have enough speed on this team to make guys look like pylons out there.” Forward Francis Bamford scored a power play goal to make it 4-2 in the third, but the Kodiaks quickly answered. Sean Olson added another power play goal to make it 5-3, but the Kodiaks refused
to give up. They scored two goals in the final two minutes to send the game to overtime. Nothing was settled in the first 10-minute period, and then Plevy sealed the deal in the second extra frame. Cowden noted that the Kodiaks had a 3-1 lead on the Pilots last year, only to have them come back and force a seventh game. “They’re a good hockey club. We have our work cut out for us,” he said.

Silence is Deafening. Study confirms dementia linked to untreated hearing loss.
From A17
Hearing loss is the third most common chronic health condition affecting older adults. Approximately 30% of individuals aged 65 and older have some degree of hearing loss, with estimates ranging from 70% to 90% of those aged 85 and older. “Hearing loss has often been associated with depressive symptoms and social isolation, which supports the hypothesis that social isolation and depressive symptomatology may mediate the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline.”

Balzer said he likes the way he and his teammates look early into the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. “I’m feeling really confident about our guys,” he said. “But we need to start off our games better. We came out flat at the start of the last two games and they capitalized.” Game four on Sunday saw the Pilots come out strong, but finish poorly. Alexander Methorst scored the game’s opening goal, but the Kodiaks scored three unanswered goals to win their first game this postseason. The Pilots managed only 25 shots in the loss, and went zero for four on the power play. Game five occurs on Tuesday night in Abbotsford, but results were not available at press time. Homicide and Suicide Support Groups Register for our Adult Grief Support Session and discover how understanding the grieving process can help you through it.
The City of Abbotsford released a free app for Android and Apple phones that lets people check when garbage, compost and recyclables are being collected in their neighbourhood for the week. The app works by inputting a house address, and then the pickup schedule for that address appears. Users can set up push notifications on their devices as reminders to put their cans out. If there’s any confusion on how to dispose of an item, the app even provides a “Waste Wizard” function, where people can type in the item they need to get rid of, and the app says where to put it. The app can be found on the Google Play Store or Apple App store by searching “Abbotsford Curbside Collection.”

The young American pianist THOMAS PANDOLFI is an exciting virtuoso who, with each passing season, is becoming more and more sought after by audiences worldwide, and showered with superlatives by critics for his passionate artistry and amazing technique. Equally popular as a recitalist, Pandolfi has appeared in concert halls nationwide. The Washington Post has described him as "an artist who is master of both the grand gesture and the sensual line. “

Voices of the Valley opens at The Reach The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford has launched its Voices of the Valley permanent museum exhibition, which provides a unique look at regional history. An opening reception for the exhibit was held Thursday evening. The exhibition invites everyone, from avid history buffs to school children, to explore the rich collections of historical objects, photographs, and archival materials that tell the story of the community through the eyes of individuals who have shaped it. The exhibition was designed through a partnership between The Reach and the MSA Museum Society, and brings together two significant historical collections. In addition, the exhibition has received support from the local business community and has been developed through a five-year investment in culture made by Columbia Kitchen Cabinets Ltd. Students, educators and the general public can access and review primary-source documents through touchscreen tablets located throughout the exhibition. This technological enhancement is made possible through support from the Lohn Foundation and a host of local donors. The exhibition is shaped around the themes and events that have impacted the community since the time of settler colonization, and uses graphic cues to demonstrate how the stories of the community are linked and continue to have impact today. It also presents multiple viewpoints. For example, a section of the exhibition dedicated to the drainage of Sumas Lake examines how settlers benefited from this agricultural development while it had devastating repercussions for the Sto:Lo people. The exhibition was also designed with educators in mind. Voices of the Valley connects directly to the classroom and addresses many of the prescribed learning outcomes in the new B.C. curriculum documents. The learning program, including the new portable Heritage Learning Kits funded by the Rotary Club of Abbotsford, will support educators by offering a suite of options based on critical-thinking strategies. The Voices of the Valley museum is located adjacent to the community archives at The Reach (32388 Veterans Way). The archives are open to the public and offer 31,000 digitized images that are publicly accessible online. The Reach continues to add to this repository through its Abbotsford Living History Project that is supported by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. For more information, visit thereach.ca.

Prize entries for regular donors A new Key Holder program has been developed at Matthew’s House in Abbotsford. The program involves people making regular monthly donations to the house, which provides respite care for families whose children live with complex care needs. Providing this care takes nearly $1 million annually, and having regular supports makes an enormous difference, says Alan Cavin, resource development co-ordinator for Communitas Supportive Care Society, which operates Matthew’s House. To encourage people to sign up for the Key Holder program, a contest is being held. Those who sign up before March 5 will be entered to win a getaway for two to the Sparkling Hill Resort in Vernon. “I had no idea my life would be impacted so profoundly”, recalls Marissa Cepelinski, an ultra runner and new board member of Run for Water. “I was holding this little girl’s hand in Ethiopia when it hit me that the money I raised was going to change her life forever.” Cepelinski had joined 15 other runners from the Lower Mainland on a trip to Ethiopia to visit the remote village of Hidri where they collectively raised more than $100,000 to dig a clean water well and a build a new school. Marissa first encountered Run for Water four years ago when a friend of hers invited her to run the 55km Ultra Marathon. This noncompetitive team event follows the trail system from Chilliwack to Abbotsford with the goal of raising money for clean water. “I have done many other running events but there is something unique about the Run for Water Ultra experience. It was my opportunity to combine my love for running with my passion to give back,” Cepelinski explains.

Cepelinski, recalls of that life changing event, “when I was walking for water I stopped and looked at this girl and realized that for only $35 I could change her life forever and give her a chance through
education I knew right then that I had a responsibility to respond to what I had seen.” Marissa is the co-founder of Capital Core Financial and with a company goal to redirect one billion dollars from CRA towards the non-profit, she is on a mission to help people implement charitable giving into their financial plan. She is excited to raise thousands of dollars this year for clean water projects in Ethiopia. Marissa was asked to join the Run for Water board when she returned from the trip. “I feel so lucky to be working with an organization like Run for Water . I get to combine so many of my life passions.”

He then moved to Abbotsford with his wife and two young daughters, Joyce and Gloria. He taught in the Abbotsford and Mission school district for many years. After retirement Alfons moved to Hong Kong with his wife Mary to teach in the International Christian School for 2 years. Alfons served his community volunteering wherever he felt God’s hand leading him. He is survived by his wife Mary Ewert, daughter Gloria (Giuliano) Cavacece, grandchildren Juno (Blayne) Schiebel, Jessica (Bryan) Schuurman, Matthew Cavacece and Giuliano Cavacece. He also took the time to teach and build relationships with his great grandchildren, Brayden, Kayla, Emma, Bella, and Levi Schuurman as well as Evan, Aliya and Amara Schiebel. Join us Thursday, February 25th at 11:00 am for his Celebration of Life, at Seven Oaks Alliance Church, 2575 Gladwin Rd, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gideon’s for Bibles would be appreciated, a cause that was very close to Al’s heart. (www.gideons.org). Messages of condolences to the family may be left at:
