helsea Olsen was left shocked and wondering if her children were okay after a logging truck t-boned her minivan at the corner of Second Avenue and Argyle Street the morning of Feb. 16. “I was driving up Argyle and the truck failed to stop at the stop sign on Second Avenue,” said Olsen. Her two six-year-old boys, Rain and Kane, were in the car with her when the empty logging truck hit the van. “I noticed him slowing as he approached the stop sign, but he just slowed and continued through, resulting In

him hitting my van in the middle of the intersection.” The RCMP issued the logging truck a violation ticket for failing to yield the right of way, Cpl. Amelia Hayden said. The truck approached the intersection from the south, driving down the hill. “On approach to the intersection, the logging truck slowed down but failed to come to a complete stop at the stop sign, rolling into the intersection and colliding with the passenger door of the mini van,” Hayden said. “Weather was noted as a contributing factor as there was light fog and light rain at the time of the crash.” Cont’d on A3

The Coulson Group’s C-130s will not be a part of the B.C government’s forest firefighting force this summer—not even on a pilot basis. Instead, the province will be testing Conair Group’s Avro RJ85 airtanker. “The C-130 is a prop aircraft, which is the same technology as the current fleet uses, whereas B.C. Wildfire Service is looking to test the costeffectiveness of a jet aircraft this summer,” Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations public affairs officer Greig Bethel wrote in an e-mail. The next-generation RJ85 will supplement B.C. forest service’s current fleet of airtankers on a pilot basis this summer.

Syrian family Calls to renew truck issue denied entry to Canada Olsen said that while she couldn’t tell exactly, she didn’t think that the driver of the logging truck noticed her van at all. “I’m not 100 per cent sure [but] I don’t think he noticed me at all and if he did it was at the last second,” Olsen said. “It didn’t seem to me like he put his brakes on before impact because I was watching and I yelled ‘he isn’t stopping’, and tried to turn out of the way.” The truck collided with the sliding passenger door on the right side of the van and bent it in severely. “My six-year-old was in that seat [by the crushed door] and the door was touching him when I pulled him out,” she said, adding that her other son was in the seat just behind him. Both boys were in car seats. While Olsen is still unsettled by the crash, she feels lucky it wasn’t any worse. “Rain and Kane are only complaining of soreness and headaches. I’m quite stiff and sore throughout my neck and back but luckily that’s it,” she said. ICBC is still reviewing whether or not her vehicle is a write-off but she and her family have been able to procure a new vehicle. “Luckily he wasn’t going any faster; if he was there would be a totally different outcome.” Living on First Avenue, this isn’t the first time Olsen has been exposed to truck drivers where they shouldn’t be. “I live on First Avenue, so my routes are either the industrial [Harbour] road, along the Quay, or Third Avenue, both are fully populated with large trucks,

when they should only be using the industrial road and continuing along the road behind the train station,” she said. Though Olsen—and the police—both say the truck driver should have come to a complete stop before driving across Argyle Street, Olsen doesn’t think he should have been there at all. “The main issue is he didn’t stop, he slowed, and must not have checked both ways, assumed it was clear and continued and must have glanced the other way,” she said. “After this I have taken notice of all the trucks on the roads, and I haven’t seen one that has committed to a full stop—which maybe is difficult for them to do, but

that is why they shouldn’t be on the main streets.” Olsen isn’t alone in that thought. The City of Port Alberni has been considering a dedicated truck route for decades and the issue was brought back to the top of council’s priority list by Coun. Chris Alemany in September 2015. At the time, Alemany told the rest of council that he had received numerous complaints about the trucks on Third Avenue. “From a perspective of safety and trying to encourage people to go into Uptown... it would be really good if we could at least encourage companies to take alternate routes when they’re going up to Ship Creek,” he said at the time.

Alemany wasn’t the only one to be concerned— Anderson Avenue resident Vicki Drybrough came to council in November to express concern over the number of trucks in her neighbourhood. “We have more than enough truck traffic already,” said Drybrough. “Dump trucks, fuel trucks, tanker trucks, logging trucks, chip trucks, scrap trucks and lumber trucks to name a few.” But despite Drybrough’s concerns, Alemany still thinks that Anderson Avenue is the best location for industrial traffic—and even more so after last week’s accident. “I think—and the Anderson residents will hate me for it—I think our only option that we have to get to Ship Creek is the Anderson Avenue corridor,” he said. “That’s where a lot of industrial traffic is already going.” Alemany is open to having a discussion with Anderson Avenue residents about how to mitigate issues that could be caused by living on a truck route, particularly where safety is concerned. “We never did get a full discussion with the residents to get an idea of what they would like to see as far as improvements.” But while Alemany prefers Anderson Avenue, council seems to be moving towards Harbour Road. Mayor Mike Ruttan said that negotiations with Western Forest Products on the topic are “proceeding well” and at a staff level. “The industrial users are incredibly flexible and willing to work with us,” he said, adding that he sees a possibility for cost savings.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

After months of preparing to host a refugee family of seven, the Port Alberni Refugee Sponsorship Group recently found out that the Syrian family has been declined entry into Canada. The news last Thursday came as a shock to group member, Pamela Day. “It was disappointing,” Day said. “It came as a surprise because we were expecting them any minute.

It came as a surprise because we were expecting them any minute. – Pamela Day “The latest news we had was that it was just a matter of getting them a flight.” Although the Canadian government did not give a reason for the family’s failure to pass screening into the country, the group has been assured another family will be assigned to Port Alberni. Day said there is nothing they can do but wait. “This has happened

to a group in Victoria and sometimes we hear it is just simple things,” Day said. “Something was found to be a problem at the last minute.” She is confident a family will be moving into the rental house the group has completely furnished. It might take up to a few months, following the government’s relocation of families on a priority basis by the end of February. The PARSC is now submitting the required documents to Immigration Canada. “There is no chance we won’t get a family,” Day said. “There are so many in need and the program we are going through selects the families who are most in need.” For now, some of the household furnishings are being stored at Trinity Church and only minor changes in the house will take place depending on the size of the family and age of children. PARSC has raised almost $29,000 through community donations. Anything not required will be used by a family assigned to the Holy Family Notre Dame sponsor group, given to another family or donated to charity. “We are ready for the next family,” Day said.

Parking congestion an issue at A.W. Neill KARLY BLATS

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Jeannette Wiens and Marilyn Johnston were Port Alberni’s leap year babies.

Alberni’s leap year babies It takes a bit of luck to have one child born on Feb. 29. It takes a heck of a lot more to have two sisters born on consecutive ‘leap days.’ That’s what happened with Port Alberni-born sisters Marilyn Johnston, 56, and Jeannette Wiens, 52. “My sister Jeanette and I were both born in Port Alberni in the 1960s,” said Johnston. “Unfortunately, [we]

had to move when our dad started logging in Prince George. Believe me when I say I was heartbroken to leave Port Alberni!” Johnston still has many fond memories of Port Alberni. “I was only seven (1.75 in leap years) and she was just three (so not even one leap year yet) but my memories of Port [Alberni] were so vivid. I had the best childhood there. My

grandma Eva Quesnel worked at the post office for many years.” The sisters try to come back often. “We came back to visit lots of friends and relatives almost every year and would always drive around to all the places we lived: Cherry Creek, Third Avenue, Beaver Creek and the house with the red steps,” said Johnston. The two girls were born four years apart

and even as their lives have taken them in different directions, they’ve met up every ‘leap day’ to celebrate their real birthdays. This year, the two sisters are celebrating their birthday in Abbotsford, where Wiens lives. Johnston lives in Kelowna. “[We’re] looking forward to coming back to Port in the near future for a long overdue visit,” Johnstons said. “We are hoping to do a reunion next summer there 2017.”

Use common ‘scents’: SD70 KARLY BLATS

26TH ANNUAL SPRING

Students at A.W. Neil Elementary School are being educated on safety measures to use when walking to and from school, says superintendent of schools Greg Smyth. Smyth on Tuesday told school trustees that recent traffic congestion issues in and around A.W. Neil have prompted teachers to have conversations with kids about how to be safe when walking around the school. Vehicle congestion has become more prominent with the addition of a parking lot on Short Street behind the school this year. Smyth said some people are preferring not to use this access into the school and are instead parking on Compton Road in front

The principal at Neill will be working with parents to remind them that they can do their kids a huge service by being more mindful of the traffic in and around the school.

He suggested working towards “scent-considerate” environments instead. Under the new policy students, parents and school district staff will be asked to avoid heavily scented products when entering SD70 facilities. The new policy will be presented and shared with staff and students in classrooms and through signage around schools. Smyth said if there are situations when someone has a noticeably powerful scent, administration is authorized to ask students to be more sensitive when using body sprays and other scent-related products. karly.blats@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/alberninews

Rain, sleet, even Ottawa’s worst snowstorm since 1947 —nothing stops Gord Johns, MP for Courtenay-Alberni. The NDP member of parliament has biked to work every day so far in the 42nd Parliament—including last Wednesday’s ‘snowmaggeddon.’ All public servants were off the road, except for the House of Commons, “which has to keep going,” Johns said. “It was really fun. There were very few cars on the road,” he said. “I definitely felt I made the right decision to be riding a bike instead of buying a car.” Prior to being elected in October, Johns was accustomed to riding his bike around Tofino, where annual rainfall can hit or exceed 12 feet. Ottawa has proven a challenge – one he’s up to. “You’re riding through some pretty tough weather,” he said, citing trouble 7420503

Riding his bike is about his own health, and that of the planet, Johns said. “I know it’s a very small part, but I’ve tried to reduce my footprint as a member of parliament. “Everything I do, I try to think about lowering my footprint. His daily commute of choice is a 15-minute ride on a mountain bike he got used on Kijiji. He leaves home at 6 a.m. and gets home at 10 p.m. The good thing about that long day? “I’m not really riding in traffic,” he said. In terms of a commute back to his home constituency that straddles Vancouver Island, Johns has one of the longest journeys in the House of Commons, with a 12.5hour journey home. “I have a lot of understanding from my colleagues about the distance I travel,” he said.

The Port Alberni Fire Dept will retire a 40-year-old firetruck, from its fleet. The older a firetruck gets, the less reliable it becomes, said Deputy Fire Chief Wes Patterson. Tender 12 has reached the end of its life as an emergency water supply vehicle and will be sold to the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society for the price of $1.

Wildfire protection

The City of Port Alberni isn’t waiting for the summer fire season to become dire before agreeing to provide standby coverage and initial attack response assistance for forest fires on its boundaries with Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations property. Council has preapproved its support this year, which will mean quick negotiations could take place whenever the ministry needed help.

Hearing loss is the third most common chronic health condition affecting older adults. Approximately 30% of individuals aged 65 and older have some degree of hearing loss, with estimates ranging from 70% to 90% of those aged 85 and older. “Hearing loss has often been associated with depressive symptoms and social isolation, which supports the hypothesis that social isolation and depressive symptomatology may mediate the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline.”

– Russell Dyson there being an equal reflected cost,” Dyson said. “For instance, if you wanted to borrow a fire apparatus from Sproat Lake for Beaver Creek, they would have to pay the

market rate for it, they couldn’t just borrow it.” The ACRD operates with 22 full-time staff, contractors and 12 committees. For the rest of what $17 extra on city residents tax bills is proposed to pay for, $351,000 will go to general government, $12,361 will go to regional parks, $62,145 to regional planning, $77,171 to Alberni Valley emergency planning and $256,216 to the regional airport to reflect the lack of grants the ACRD has received for the airport’s expansion. reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/alberninews

City of Port Alberni residents will see a proposed extra $17 on their residential tax bill courtesy of the regional district. “The tax impact of the AlberniClayoquot Regional District, based on a property of $175,000, would realize a net increase of $17 based on the budget as it is,” regional district CAO Russell Dyson told city council on Monday night. The $17 includes a proposed requisition from the AlberniClayoquot Hospital Network (something that is paid every year). The budget bylaw for the ACRD has yet to receive its first reading by the board of directors nor has it gone to a public session yet, Dyson added. It will not be passed until the end of March. It received first reading on Feb. 24 (after the News went to press). The proposed tax requisition for the city was approximately $1.6 million in 2015, Dyson said. With that money, the city paid $215,000 for ACRD staff wages, $133,000 for the city’s multiplex debt, $112,000 goes to the Northern 911 Corporation and $92,000 goes to Custom Transit. Those amounts are set and will not change when the 2016 budget is adopted, Dyson said. The regional district operates under several financial rules, Dyson said. “Areas are only charged for the services they are provided. Services are independent, you have to have a separate, distinct budget for each of our 47 services and you cannot transfer revenues and expenditures between the services without

KILLING TIME UNPRODUCTIVE

P

opular thinking says if Vancouver Island were cut off from the mainland due to a catastrophic event, we produce only enough food to feed people for three days. Food security has been a big issue in the Alberni Valley, and is gaining even more importance at the municipal government level. We believe the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District’s abattoir feasibility survey is a good step to take toward ensuring food security in the central Island. Being located in the Alberni Valley presents unique challenges to farmers who must pay to take their livestock over the hump to Courtenay for slaughter, then return to pick up their meat products. Having something more centrally located could again be economical, as it once was before new health regulations forced smalltime slaughterhouses to close. We will watch the ACRD’s agricultural plan grow with interest.

BIG SCREEN, BIG DEAL Kudos go out to the Film Fest Port Alberni committee, which has worked since last fall to resurrect the popular film fest. Port Alberni has been without the eclectic mix of movies represented in the film series for five years; ever since theatres changed the way they distributed films, and the timing no longer worked A level of co-operation has been reached between Landmark Cinemas, owner of the Paramount Theatre, and the film fest committee (operated through the AV Museum), and films will be presented Sundays at 5 p.m. going forward. Committee member Denny Durocher rightly says the film fest is part of the cultural fabric of the community. While we are fortunate to be able to see first-run movies such as Star Wars or the latest Disney Pixar flick in Port Alberni, some of the more subtle productions are also appreciated. — ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Time to take MSP off life support take from MSP premiums to rise

TOM every year, reaching $2.5 billion in FLETCHER the coming years. B.C. Views

T

he B.C. Liberal government made a big show of selectively easing Medical Services Plan fees in its budget for the coming election year. In what is becoming a pattern for Premier Christy Clark, the biggest beneficiaries are single parents. The new MSP is calculated for adults only, so a single parent with two children saves as much as $1,200 a year. Premium assistance is expanded, with discounts for single people making up to $42,000, rather than $30,000. But for singles, couples and seniors who don’t qualify for discounts, the rate is going up another four per cent effective Jan. 1, 2017. Indeed, with population growth, the finance ministry expects its

MSP revenue covers about 17 per cent of B.C.’s health budget, and Clark and Finance Also Minister note that Mike de Jong insist that politicians Canada’s and public only direct health care sector charge is a employees vital signal to people that have never health care paid MSP isn’t free. This premiums. argument has failed. One seldom-discussed fact is that for half of the people charged MSP, it’s paid by their employers. In private sector terms it’s a hefty payroll tax, creating one more obstacle for businesses to hire full-time staff with benefits. So most full-time employees

don’t receive this supposedly vital signal, unless they get laid off because their employer is losing money. Also note that politicians and public sector employees have never paid MSP premiums. Their employers, taxpayers, pick up the tab for them. People who have to pay out of pocket are what the bureaucracy calls “pay direct accounts.” Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation recently revealed that nearly 400,000 of these accounts are currently in arrears by more than 30 days, owing a grand total of $457 million. Of course this is Canada, so even if you haven’t paid or even registered for MSP, you still get treatment at the hospital. Another potential signal lost in the noise. For people who lose their jobs, MSP is like being kicked when they are down. Cont’d on page A11

Re: Refugee family to arrive ‘soon’, Feb. 18. I definitely take offence of my opinion being called ignorance because I talk about the refugee situation that is coming to the Alberni Valley. I believe that from what I read in the newspaper and see on TV about other countries that are taking in refugees and their plight to

change the place that is welcoming them, is plain enough to me to be giving my opinion without being called ignorant, or afraid of the unknown. I find it offensive as a citizen of the Valley to be referred to as such. I have my opinion and I will stick to it regardless of somebody else’s opinion; this is Canada and do not forget it. Maybe that is why we are so opinionated in this country, because we are allowed to be.

Remember this is Canada, and we have freedom of speech regardless of what the situation is, and the situation in this instance, in my opinion, is not good, according to TV and media reports from around the world. Or would you say that they are ignorant also? This is our Valley and we have a say in it, regardless of whether someone else likes it or not. Dave Noble, Port Alberni

MSP ‘kick in the teeth’ for those laid off who are dinged at previous wages Cont’d from page A10

Their employer stops paying, and the slowmoving bureaucracy charges them based on their income from the previous year. There was a fuss in 2004 after the B.C. Liberals contracted out MSP administration to a Virginia-based back-office specialist, delightfully named Maximus Corporation. Now Maximus goes after delinquent MSP accounts with collection agency tactics, and

«Share your opinion

attempts to keep up with the comings and goings from other provinces and countries. Opposition parties decry the continued inequity of the MSP premium system, which charges the same for a single person making $45,000 or $450,000 a year. NDP leader John Horgan rails about inequality and accuses Clark of using MSP revenues to establish her prosperity “slush fund,” but he stops short of calling for the

elimination of MSP premiums. One would expect the NDP to lead another “axe the tax” campaign, as they did with the carbon tax and the HST, but they aren’t. Perhaps this is because workers for this unnecessary Maximus machine remain members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver has it right. He staged a popular petition drive to roll MSP premiums

into income tax. If the government wants to send a message, it can interrupt its continuous “Jobs Plan” advertising. Scrapping MSP and raising income tax rates on higher brackets to compensate would fix the private sector payroll deterrent, make salaried employees (including me) pay their share, and end a tax break for the wealthy. Don’t hold your breath. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Enforce rules for cyclists To the Editor,

I certainly hope that the city’s managers can justify the waste of our tax money when they decided that the Gertrude Street bridge needed fixing. I hope that the bridge is in need of urgent repairs, because the bridge does not get that much use on a daily basis. Now for the bicycle right of ways. First of all you need to

enforce the rules and the non-rules. Cyclists do not seem to know how to obey the road rules. I know a lot of Port Alberni’s drivers are just as bad but if they are in an accident they may have a chance. Bicycle riders do not have much of a chance in an accident and pay no insurance. Until the city managers rectify the large truck situation, bicycle riders will always be at risk. Steven Reiter, Port Alberni

Break free of clothing conformity To the Editor,

Thanks to the mayor of Coquitlam for his genderequality initiative (wearing the same suit every day for 15 months), but I beg to offer t’other side of the coin. For indeed, women have more accepted freedom than men to express their individuality through their style of dress. Keeping pace with fashion trends, women have to be creatively innovative: a powerful trait that’s valued in a competitively entrepreneurial business world.

Men, on t’other hand, are slaves to a comparatively boring dress code: the suit and tie. Or, as Dad used to call it: the monkey suit. So while we recognize gender equality between men and women, let us free our brothers from their noose-tied collars and ridiculous layers of clothing, especially in summer. With more open collars, perhaps there would be more open thinking between diplomats and warring world leaders. Liz Stonard, Port Alberni

Forest Bathing Trail Guides and Wellness Associates of British Columbia is offering an introduction into one style of the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku. When translated, Shinrin-Yoku means ‘taking in the atmosphere of the forest’ or Forest Bathing.

this week at the THEATRE

This gentle forest trail walk is being offered free of charge to individuals experiencing chronic illness or bereavement. Participants will walk slowly over a distance of 2 kilometers (round trip) with many opportunities to rest over a three-hour period. During the walk participants will be encouraged to relax while mindfully exploring their sensory awareness of the environment. From a therapeutic viewpoint, a growing body of literature examining the physiological and psychological effects of Forest Bathing suggests that, contact with nature and forests in particular is beneficial. Studies have shown that Forest Bathing: is effective for stress reduction and mood improvement, induces feelings of vitality, significantly decreases measurements for depression and hostility, facilitates improvements in blood pressure, is therapeutic for cardiovascular disease, significantly enhances immune response via increased NK cell activity, reduces blood sugar concentrations in individuals with diabetes type 2 mellitus, is effective for cognitive restoration.

release noted. Coulson Group CEO Wayne Coulson said that he did not receive

a reason as to why the province turned down his C-130s despite their higher tank capacity. “I have no idea why the province went with Conair,” Coulson said. “The government dances to their own drum.” Coulson added that there was no tender process for the awarding of the contract. “It is unusual in the firefighting world to award a contract to a company without a tender process,” he said. The MoF did not reply to questions about the lack of tender process. The province’s contracted fleet for the 2016 fire season consists of 33 aircraft including one lightduty helicopter, five medium-duty helicopter, eight bird dog helicopters, 12 airtankers and two para-attack jump ships. The contract is split between Conair Group Inc., Air Spray (1967) Ltd., Ascent Helicopters Ltd., Wildcat Helicopters, Interior Helicopters (Jetcom Ventures Inc.), and Kenn Borek Air Ltd. Bethel added that the province can bring in additional contracted aircraft as needed, noting that in July 2015, more than 100 helicopters were being used to fight fires throughout B.C.

Sherry Jasken, right, was presented with $100 cash from Alberni Valley News publisher Teresa Bird, just for participating in the 2nd annual Readers Choice awards.

The Alberni Valley News readers have chosen their favourite places to eat, shop and just hang out in the Alberni Valley. This is the second annual Readers Choice Awards and this year more than 100 entries were submitted online and on paper. With nearly 100 categories, we really appreciate the time people took to speak up for the businesses they support in our community. In the next few pages we have mentioned only those who placed first in the survey of readers, but many of the numbers were close and many, many business names were put forward. That means the business community in the Alberni Valley is working hard to

In order to create terms of reference, Kingston said she needed to know what the legal framework of the committee would be. Mayor Mike Ruttan agreed. “We want to make sure it’s done in a way that protects the asset and protects the city—that’s the whole point of a legal structure.” But McLeman said he believed the board could be picked and terms of reference decided upon at the same time. “Yes, we need a terms of reference but I think that could be done coincidentally with forming the board,” he said. “The City of Port Alberni owns McLean Mill. The City of Port Alberni owns all the heritage pieces.” Recommendations will be made at the next council meeting.

Advertorial

Do you have good hearing but poor comprehension? Do you sometimes feel that you can hear well, but not fully understand what’s being said? This can be most evident in social conversations and watching television. Fortunately, there may be a solution for some people dealing with this type of hearing loss ‑ the Audéo Venture hearing aid has been designed specifically to help improve speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear. Poor comprehension in conversation can possibly be caused by undetected hearing loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high frequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear making it difficult to hear consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is even more challenging when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not consider themselves to have a hearing problem. They can hear deep tones with no issue,

HART; Monica Mary Monica passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the age of 81. She battled with Diabetes the majority of her life. Monica leaves behind her devoted husband Dennis. This past July they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. In addition, Monica leaves behind her son Ian (Silvia); grandchildren Ryan, and Sara; sister Betty (Ron) Sparrow and their children Jeanette, Michael (Karen) and several great nieces and nephews. Together with their son, and her parents Thomas and Ivy, Dennis and Monica emigrated from England in 1966. Their journey abroad once again united them with Betty, Ron and family who had immigrated to Canada and settled in Port Alberni the previous year. Monica and Dennis were long time members of the Haymakers Square Dance Club where they enjoyed many dances and trips with the group in which they met many lifelong friends. In her late 50’s, Monica obtained her driver’s license which gave her a new lease on life. As a matter of fact, she enjoyed driving so much that Dennis eventually had to settle for the passenger’s seat. This new independence allowed her to become highly involved in her volunteer work at Fir Park Village. She loved to spend countless hours at the Village assisting with a variety of tasks such as: Ladies Auxiliary, decorating, helping to organize the teas and bazaars, Bingo Caller and collator. Monica was honoured to receive the “Citizen of the Year award for 1993 and then again in 2006. A Tea Of Remembrance will be held 2:00pm – 4:00pm, Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the Cherry Creek Community Hall, 3720 Moore Rd. Friends and family are warmly welcomed. Monica’s family would like to thank the staff of the BC Ambulance Service who assisted her in her time of need, the dedicated staff of the WCGH and especially Drs. Fayi, Lund and Kitshoff. In lieu of flowers, donations in Monica’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 276 – 2950 Douglas St, Victoria, BC., V8T 4N4 or the Fir Park Village Foundation New Bus Fund, 4411 Wallace St., Port Alberni, BC., V9Y 7Y5 Condolences may be offered to the family at www.chapelofmemories.ca

Down to the wire for ‘Dogs With playoff spot on the line, Bulldogs plan to honour emergency responders ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ BC Hockey League playoff prospects have come down to the final two games of the regular season. The Bulldogs are in fifth place in the Island Division with 27 points, two points behind fourth-place Victoria Grizzlies. Both teams are playing two games this weekend. The Bulldogs are riding a four-game points streak: two wins, one tie and one overtime loss. They host Powell River Kings for a pair of games this weekend: Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. The top four teams from each of the three divisions will make the playoffs for a total

of 12 playoff teams. Each team will be seeded, with No. 1 playing No. 4 and No. 2 playing No. 3. Given this scenario, should the Bulldogs earn the final playoff spot in the Island division they will play the Nanaimo Clippers, who already clinched the division. Round 1 of the BC Ford Dealers Road to the Fred Page Cup starts on Friday, March 4 and is a bestof-seven series. The Bulldogs and Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District are teaming up for the ‘Dogs’ game on

Saturday to celebrate emergency first responders in the Alberni Valley and encourage personal preparedness. “During a ceremonial faceoff we will be honouring those

that are there for our community in emergencies and disasters: our first responders,” the team noted in a statement. There will be contests and giveaways too.

Alberni athlete Isabella Cross, centre, a member of the Mt. Washington Ski Club, will compete in alpine skiing at the BC Winter Games.

across the province who are at the highest level of their discipline. The alpine team will be competing in slalom and giant slalom at nearby Apex Mountain Resort, head coach John Trimmer said. Also representing

Port Alberni at the Games are Kimberly Giesbrecht in figure skating, and Hanna Ross in badminton. Hosting more than 2,500 athletes, Penticton will be brimming with youthful energy this weekend.

Turnovers and an untimely yellow card cost the Port Alberni Black Sheep three tries and a road game on Saturday, as home Westshore beat the Sheep 43–10 at Westhill Stadium in Victoria. “A little bit of rust showed,” Black Sheep head coach Jas Purewal said. “We kept making mistakes, we kept turning the ball over on offence.” The Sheep went ahead 3–0 on the first run of the game, but Westshore scored 19 in a row to take a commanding lead. The Sheep scored a try at the end of

the first half to draw within nine points (19–10). A yellow card in the early minutes of the second half stifled any momentum the Sheep had, Purewal said. “We gave up three tries. That put us behind the eight ball.” When a team receives a yellow card—the equivalent of a penalty in rugby—they play shorthanded for 10 minutes. SCRUM NOTES... The game between the Black Sheep and Westshore was a pregame warmup for rugby fans at Westhill, who got to watch Team Canada play Brazil later.

learned to combine her classical training with a jazz sensibility, rhythmic drive and delicate construction of ensemble mixture. She moved to Toronto after graduation to hone her skills. Perkovic (vocals, guitars) appears with Lea Kirstein (vocals, viola) and together, this wife-and-wife team pares Reenie’s songs down to a raw acoustic soundscape. International Women’s Day

Film Fest Port Alberni returns to the Paramount Theatre in March after a five-year absence. “We are thrilled to re-launch the film fest,” said Shelley Harding from the AV Museum. “We’re back, fresh and new.” Films will be aired on Sundays at 5 p.m.—a departure from the past, but a day necessitated by the theatre’s schedule, she explained. The festival was halted five years ago after theatres changed the way they distributed films.

Now, Port Alberni has been included on the Toronto International Film Festival’s film circuit, and benefits from cost sharing with other communities. The film fest committee has stuck with a formula for choosing movies that worked for them in the past, committee member Denny Durocher said. The three-film series usually features a Canadian film or one with Canadians featured prominently in its production; a crowd pleaser; and one that is a little bit different, perhaps set elsewhere, and takes

viewers “somewhere they may never have been. “We see this as an important part of the culture of our community,” he said. The film fest operated for 10 years and brought in more than 100 films that differed from first-run movies. The first movie, part of the TIFF film fest circuit, is Brooklyn, which was filmed partially in Montreal, and is up for Best Picture at the Oscars, on March 13. Series passes are available for $27 at the museum ($10 for single film tickets).
