Nearly $8,000 raised in this year’s Family Fishing Derby

Another year of unseasonable weather, but another great turnout by the community to support local kids with cancer. JCI Kootenay, Fort

Steele Heritage Town and the Family Fishing Derby volunteers and sponsors have a lot to be proud of after hosting an amazing fundraising event on Family

Day. Topping last year’s similar event at Fort Steele, the 2016 version of the derby raised nearly $7,900 that will be donated to the Ca-

nadian Cancer Society who will then distribute the funding to local kids with cancer and their families to support treatment, travel and other expenses incurred while they fight the disease. In addition to the fundraising, two local families won amazing vacation prizes donated by long time Derby Whale Sponsors. Dean and Tracey Uphill of Dacota Freight sponsored a trip to Disneyland for a young cancer survivor and her family from Fernie; this is a legacy Dean and Tracey have generously continued every year the Derby has been held. When contacted about the good news the family was extremely grateful, “This is such an amazing event. The phone call we received last night just made my year. We told our son and daughter and they both cried they were so happy.” Sunshine Houseboats Ltd. also sponsored a houseboat vacation for a young boy and his family from Creston who were very excited and made the trip to

A strong family turnout helped to raise nearly $8,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society from this year’s Family Fishing Derby. Fort Steele with many family members to enjoy the Family Fund Day festivities. Hundreds of other prizes and draw items were given away throughout the day, including kids who took away a big screen LED TV as well as an XBoxOne complete with two games courtesy of Mike Hambalek at Caliper Machine & Hydraulics. The big adult prize was a 2 man pontoon boat valued at over $3,000.00, which went to the winner of the closely contested adult casting contest that had everyone on the edge of their seats. In order to keep everyone fueled and hydrated

for the day, food and refreshments were made available by Whale Sponsors Tim Hortons and Ricks Fine Meats & Sausage, as well as great donations from local grocery stores and bakeries throughout the region. This event would not be possible without the amazing support of the dozens of community sponsors and volunteers, as well as the participation of everyone that attended and donated generously. JCI Kootenay is proud have brought this event to the community and even prouder of the lasting impact it will make on those local families that will benefit the most.

Real Deals on Home Decor has recently completed its second promotion dedicated to helping the Women’s Resource Centre fulfill its mandate.

Friday, February 26, 2016 Kootenay News Advertiser “The objective is to have more people aware of what the centre does,” said Kristen Simek, owner of Real Deals on Home Decor. Real Deals, which also sells clothing, set aside two racks of clothing. If a customer bought a piece of clothing to

The Women’s Resource Centre provides counseling, a resource library, referrals, meetings and programs, advocacy, emergency supplies, food baskets — and a free store that includes clothing. Hugs: A huge hug to Tressa at Cranbrook Superstore, who went above and beyond when my 2 year old got sick. She not only found me some new clothes for him to wear home, but she also paid for them. We recently moved to town from the city to get away from ignorant people like yourself, with a young family and not the highest paying jobs you have now left us with a wee financial burden. We are aware accidents happen, and we are not immune, but we are HONEST and would have owned up to that accident. When someone ruins property that you have worked very hard to purchase, it really hits you hard... we will continue to work hard to fix the damage that you caused, but we hope the next time you think of being ignorant like this maybe you’ll stop for a minute and recognize that property you are damaging belongs to another human. B.C. Views: Time to take MSP off life support by Tom Fletcher The B.C. Liberal government made a big show of selectively easing Medical Services Plan fees in its budget for the coming election year. In what is becoming a pattern for Premier Christy Clark, the biggest beneficiaries are single parents. The new MSP is calculated for adults only, so a single parent with two children saves as much as $1,200 a year. Premium assistance is expanded, with discounts for single people making up to $42,000, rather than $30,000. But for singles, couples and seniors who don’t qualify for discounts, the rate is going up another four per cent effective Jan. 1, 2017. Indeed, with population growth, the finance ministry expects its take from MSP premiums to rise every year, reaching $2.5 billion in the coming years. MSP revenue covers about 17 per cent of B.C.’s health budget, and Clark and Finance Minister Mike de Jong insist that Canada’s only direct health care charge is a vital signal to people that health care isn’t free. This argument has failed. One seldom-discussed fact is that for half of the people charged MSP, it’s paid by their employers. In private sector terms it’s a hefty payroll tax, creating one more obstacle for businesses to hire fulltime staff with benefits.

So most full-time employees don’t receive this supposedly vital signal, unless they get laid off because their employer is losing money. Also note that politicians and public sector employees have never paid MSP premiums. Their employers, taxpayers, pick up the tab for them. People who have to pay out of pocket are what the bureaucracy calls “pay direct accounts.” Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation recently revealed that nearly 400,000 of these accounts are currently in arrears by more than 30 days, owing a grand total of $457 million. Of course this is Canada, so even if you haven’t paid or even registered for MSP, you still get treatment at the hospital. Another potential signal lost in the noise. For people who lose their jobs, MSP is like being kicked when they are down. Their employer stops paying, and the slow-moving bureaucracy charges them based on their income from the previous year. There was a fuss in 2004 after the B.C. Liberals contracted out MSP administration to a Virginia-based back-office specialist, delightfully named Maximus Corporation. Now Maximus goes after delinquent MSP accounts with collection agency tactics, and attempts to keep up with the comings and

goings from other provinces and countries. Opposition parties decry the continued inequity of the MSP premium system, which charges the same for a single person making $45,000 or $450,000 a year. NDP leader John Horgan rails about inequality and accuses Clark of using MSP revenues to establish her prosperity “slush fund,” but he stops short of calling for the elimination of MSP premiums. One would expect the NDP to lead another “axe the tax” campaign, as they did with the carbon tax and the HST, but they aren’t. Perhaps this is because workers for this unnecessary Maximus machine remain members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver has it right. He staged a popular petition drive to roll MSP premiums into income tax. If the government wants to send a message, it can interrupt its continuous “Jobs Plan” advertising. Scrapping MSP and raising income tax rates on higher brackets to compensate would fix the private sector payroll deterrent, make salaried employees (including me) pay their share, and end a tax break for the wealthy. Don’t hold your breath. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Email: tfletcher@blackpress.ca Twitter: @tomfletcherbc

Do you know this married couple? There are many here in the East Kootenay region who have roots going back to the pioneers. Maybe this is a picture of an ancestor? Are you able to let us know who this married couple is in this photo which is possibly taken in the mid 1930’s? Letter: How about some healthy tourism? Dear editor: I liked your editorial (‘Bad review won’t get us down’, December 18 Kootenay News Advertiser) very much as an answer to the negative description in the Lonely Planet about the area around Cranbrook. Yes, we have beautiful places to visit and to discover around here. I would like to find support for my ideas for

tourism to activate. My first suggestion is: After visiting Grindelwald, Switzerland, I found there a steady orienteering course with 20 control points to accomplish. In the tourism office, guests could buy a map and a description of the courses. If a person walking the courses completed and found 10 control points, they would receive a

bronze pin, with 15 control points receiving a silver pin and those who complete all 20 get a gold pin. Another suggestion is this: During a holiday trip with a class of children to the Austrian Alps, we had the opportunity to receive a map for the area in the tourism office and a list of places worthy to see. The places were ranked by length or difficulty and each had a value in points. For someone taking the challenge, 25 points would earn them a bronze medal,

50 points a silver medal and 75 points a gold. In our area, a hike up Fisher Peak could earn maybe 10 points and to visit a waterfall, maybe two points, just to give an example. This kind of activity would bind the tourist for a while in the Cranbrook area. I am wondering if there is any institution or group in the East Kootenay region who wants to step on board and get something like this going? ~Udo Grady, Cranbrook

Chef Shelby Schiller’s secret pecan pie challenge ingredient did not stop Chef Rusty Cox from emerging victorious. This was a first-round match-up neither chef wanted to see. Chef Rusty Cox of The Heid Out Restaurant and Brewhouse and Chef Shelby Schiller of BJ’s Diner and Creekside Pub, Kimberley, are friends.

They would have preferred not to face each other in the first round of competition, but dreamed of meeting in the grand finale on March 2 to share in the stone soup glory. But fate would have is differently: Schiller

drew Cox’s name at the kick-off press conference, sealing their firstround face-off. Conspiracy theories have ran wild. Rumours of the chefs throwing the competition in favour of friendship buzzed throughout East

Kootenay kitchens. The rumours -- denied aggressively by each chef -- were put to rest once and for all when secret challenge ingredients were unveiled. The chefs did their very best to throw the other off. Schiller challenged Cox to use a pecan pie in his daily soup, which he accepted, therefore earning five extra points towards the final vote. However, in a surprise twist, Chef Cox did not present Schiller with an additional secret ingredient, preventing her from taking the five possible points. The Cranbrook and District Community Foundation supported Cox in his out-of-the box strategy and allowed the move. Interestingly enough, the chefs both chose to make soups that highlighted similar flavours. Schiller created a steak goulash, while Cox answered with a steak vegetable soup. Both

were crowd pleasers. After many laughs, a few leg kicks and goodnatured teasing, Cox reigned supreme by a vote of 27 to 16. However, the vote may have been much closer, had Shelby had her bonus points within reach. The victorious chefs from each of the semifinal events will move onto the grand finale public fundraiser Wednesday, March 2, noon to 1:30 p.m. The final event, sponsored by Investors Group, takes place at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort. Tickets to the soup-off are available in two prices: $25 for lunch; or, $45 for lunch and a $20 charitable receipt. They can be purchased with cash at Max’s Place, through the CDCF office by calling 250.426.1119 or online through Snapd East Kootenay.

Feeding the ducks brings a host of problems. Feeding the ducks that inhabit the land around the Tamarack Mall isn’t doing them any favours. The parking lot at the mall is the scene of numerous people coming solely to feed the ducks. While it may seem like a fun thing to do on an afternoon, it is becoming a serious problem for the ducks, and eventually, maybe humans. To begin with, having a feeding area such as this can prevent the wildfowl from their natural cycle of migration. “Our hope is that people will stop feeding the ducks so that they migrate locally to safer zones such as the marshlands at Elizabeth Lake, which has been their normal route in past years,” said Cristina Borgogelli, marketing manager, Tamarack Centre. The feeding zone also promotes more
