STAYING ALIVE

Class sizes among the highest in BC A ‘constant challenge’ for smaller districts Kevin Mills Mission Record

Class sizes in Mission are among the largest in B.C., according to recently released numbers from the province. For students in grades 8 through 12, Mission had the sixth most-crowded schools, with an average class size of 25.3. That’s above the provincial average of 23.2 students per class, and an increase from the previous year’s total of 24.9 students per Grade 8-12 class. However, it is still below the provincially mandated maximum class size of 30 students. “We don’t have any academic class from Grade 4 to Grade 12 that is over 30 students,” said Randy Huth assistant superintendent of Mission Public Schools (school district 75). Mission also ranked highly in lower grade levels. According to the report, for students in grades 4 through 7, Mission’s average of 27.8 students was the fourth highest in the province. The provincial average was 26. Grade 1-3 saw Mission place seventh highest at 22.4 (provincial average was 21.8) and in Kindergarten, Mission was sixth highest with 20.6 students compared to the provincial average of 19.5. Maximum sizes for primary classes (Grades 1-3) is 24 students while Kindergarten classes have a maximum

of 22 students. Mission does have some classes with more than 30 students, including band, leadership, drama and choir, but those are permitted by the province because they are not academic courses. Huth called class size a constant challenge, especially for a smaller school district, adding the district is careful with its staffing numbers to ensure it doesn’t have a budget deficit. “We do staff our schools very, very tightly,” he said. “Because if you overstaff a school, that’s a $100,000 mistake.” However, having larger class sizes can pose problems as the year progresses. “When new students come into the district that are starting after spring break, a lot of our schools are so closely staffed that there isn’t a place for them in that neighbourhood school. We have to find a place for them in another school,” said Huth. At the end of the year, students can apply to attend the neighbourhood school beginning in September. Huth said because Mission is a smaller district, attending a different school is a viable alternative. The maximum provincially acceptable walking distance from home to school is 4.1 kilometres for elementary students and 4.9 kilometres for middle and secondary students.

Mission City Outlaws players swarm Brody Dyck after he scored the game-winning goal just 14 seconds into overtime on Tuesday night. The Outlaws, who were down three games to none in their best-of seven opening round playoff series against the Ridge Meadows Flames, have now won two straight overtime contests to narrow the series to three games to two. Game six takes place tonight in Maple Ridge. If the Outlaws win again, it will force a series-deciding game seven back in Mission, on Saturday night. The puck drops at 6:45 p.m. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

Thieves hit downtown – again Six businesses broken into in the past 10 days Kevin Mills Mission Record

A series of break-ins continues to plague Mission’s downtown core as six businesses were reportedly hit in the past 10 days. In January, the Mission Downtown Business Association (MDBA) reported that 19 stores had been targeted over a fourmonth period. The crime spree has some business owners scrambling to improve their security systems. Tami Klassen, owner of Magnolias on Main, had her business burglarized on Feb. 16. Thieves came in through a window in the building behind her store and then broke through a wall in order to climb into the flower shop. When she came to work in the morning, Klassen noticed that there were papers all over the floor. She initially thought there was a rat roaming about. But when she turned on the lights, she realized she had been robbed. “I could see that both the tills were open and just mayhem, paper everywhere, phone off the hook. It was awful.” She immediately called 911 and was told to get out of the store. “They could have still been in there.” It was the first time she had ever been robbed and Klassen described the experience as creepy and terrifying. “It changes the dynamics of everything. It was like they smashed a hole in my back wall and sucked the life out of my store,” said Klassen. As the police investigated the scene, it was discovered that Klassen’s master key had also been stolen. Fortunately, officers discovered it close by, hidden under a leaf and a piece of glass. Klassen is now in the process of changing all the locks, repairing the walls and getting a new security system. It is going to cost the local business owner thousands, not to mention the full day of business she lost. Along with the fi-

She said she couldn’t go back to work for two days and is still feeling a little “unsafe.” MDBA president Carlo Billinger said businesses are frustrated by the break-ins and the criminals’ apparent lack of fear. “Is the fact they don’t have any fear about it because if they get caught they get two weeks put away and that’s it?” Billinger believes the crimes are being committed by the same person(s). “It has to be the same person. I don’t believe for a second that it’s not. The MO that they

are using makes it sound like it’s the same person or persons, and it’s so hard for me to fathom that we can’t figure out who this is.” Billinger thinks police need to look beyond Mission’s borders for answers. “These people didn’t just appear in Mission. Are we talking to other areas? Surrey? Abbotsford? Maple Ridge?” Until the suspect is apprehended, Billinger wants to remind businesses to keep their lights on during the evenings and to make sure the business has a good security system. “Probably your home is alarmed and your car is alarmed, so make

sure your business is alarmed,” he said. Mission RCMP continue to investigate the break-ins. Staff Sgt. Rob Dixon said they are likely related to previous events and police have a suspect in mind. “We can’t say for sure that it’s isolated to one person,” said Dixon, adding they are doing their best to “get who we believe to be involved in these into custody.” He said he understands how frustrating it is for businesses. Anyone who sees anything suspicious should call police immediately, he added.

While the members of Mission Fire Rescue had to leave the scene, two firefighters decided to come back to the location, on their own time, to assist in the rescue . Eventually, with the help of a veterinarian, the firefighters and staff, they managed to attach the sling and lift Finn back up.

“He’s actually fine. As soon as he was standing, it took a couple of minutes for his muscles to warm back up and now he’s fine,” said Harper. Finn is considered to be a senior citizen in horse years. Normally horses live to about 30 years, but Arabians are known to live a little longer, according to Harper. Finn should be back helping kids learn to ride in no time.

Mission Fire Rescue Service was called out on Monday to help with a horse in distress. Alicia Harper, owner of Hylee Training, a horse riding school in Mission, called for help when she discovered Finn, her 30-year-old Arabian horse, stuck in its stall. The horse had lain down and could not get back up. “They roll over and then get their legs too far up the wall,” she explained. Finn is an older horse, used to teach younger kids how to ride. While Harper and her staff managed to get Finn out of his stall, they could not get the horse to stand up. “When they’re older, they don’t have enough power in their hind end sometimes.” That’s when she called the fire department. “In total, I think there were about 12 guys there to start with and we still couldn’t get him up,” said Harper. Eventually she had to contact the Horse Council of BC, located in Aldergrove, to send over

OPINION

Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

Fee solution isn’t perfect Last week’s decision by city council to crack down on unregistered secondary suites has received plenty of feedback – both positive and negative. The issue is this: Homeowners who have registered secondary suites are billed double for water, sewer and garbage because more than one family resides in the home. Those who have not registered their suites are paying the normal fee. The district has put together a list of homes they “suspect” have secondary suites in them. Those residences will be double billed. If the home does not have a suite, then the homeowner can appeal and an inspection team will come out. If there is no suite, then the added fee will be dropped, or refunded if already paid. So what’s the problem?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

If you are a homeowner with nothing to hide, the inspection will take five minutes and cost you nothing. If you have a secondary suite, then you should be paying like everyone else. The opposing argument is that a single person renting out a basement suite to another single person uses less water, sewer and garbage services than a family of six with no suite. While that may be true, until every Mission home has a water meter – a costly but valubale endeavour – homes built in 2008 and earlier all pay the same flat rate for utilities, no matter what the occupancy. Council’s move to double bill isn’t perfect. But it is an inexpensive way to collect fees until a better, more equitable solution is initiated.

With thieves targeting local businesses, do you fear that private residences will be next?

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you agree with council’s decision to crack down on fees for secondary suites? Here’s how you responded:

YOUR VIEWS Community steps up to help boys and girls in need of a mentor On December 17, 2015 the Mission Record published an article asking the residents of Mission to step up and consider becoming a mentor to one of the 17 children on our wait list. And step up they did! January and February have been a whirlwind of processing and screening new volunteer applicants, and choosing the lucky children they will be partnered with. So far, six Mission children (three boys and three girls) have received New Year’s “Bigs” with a couple more volunteer applications slowly trickling in over recent weeks. Our fundraiser pub night at the 14th Ave. Pub on Feb. 6 was a sell-out, and we are

grateful to everyone who showed up to support us including several city councillors.

We will always be in need of volunteers, as we get parents calling daily asking to sign their children up, but

I would like to comment on the recent move of the City of Mission to charge double utility fees for homes with secondary suites. I think it is very important that everyone pay their fair share for water, sewer, and garbage pick-up, but I wonder if charging homeowners with secondary suites double is the answer. A home with six occupants but with no secondary suite can end up using more of these resources than many homes with a suite but fewer occupants. Friends of mine (senior couple) have a suite with one occupant for a total of three people, and I live upstairs, while my son lives downstairs for a total of two. Wouldn’t it be more fair if the fees were based on usage rather than on the presence of a secondary suite?

Shaun Wright said that Miles McCallum, age 33, was taken into custody last week. “He was arrested at a residence in Mission so they are definitely hanging out locally,” he said adding that Crystal

McCallum is still wanted. Last month the police asked for the public’s help in locating the pair, which they described as possibly violent. Crystal, age 37, is CRYSTAL MCCALLUM wanted on arrest

warrants for possession of stolen property, unlawful possession of ID, and breach of recognizance. She is described as Caucasian, 165 cm (5’6”), 70 kg (155 lbs) with shoulder-length brown hair, blue eyes and has a left forearm tattoo that says Miles. Miles was wanted on arrest warrants for possession of stolen property, unlawful posses-

sion of ID, possession of breakin instruments, breach of recognizance, and driving while suspended. Police advise that if someone sees Crystal, do not approach her; instead call 911 immediately. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161.

If you wish to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 at any hour. You do not have to give your name, address, or your telephone number. You do not have to testify in court. A cash reward of up to $2,000 may be paid for any information which leads to an arrest and charge.

THE DOOR IS OPEN

How many of us live in prisons of our own making? If you feel constrained by the circumstances of your life and yet those circumstances are largely your own creations, then you have indeed built yourself a prison. Henry David Thoreau writes about those who have “forged their own golden or silver fetters,” accumulating wealth and property to the point where they are literally enslaved to it. He reminds us that “A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone.” And a man is free in the same proportion. The ultimate freedom is to have the liberty of mind and spirit to do as one would choose, free of duress or external control. Most adults live life free of external control, and yet we feel constrained by the circumstances of our lives. We must toil and work like slaves because we have allowed materialism to become our master. We are slaves to our appetites and desires because we have allowed hedonism to become our master. And we are imprisoned by our own minds because we fail to see that there are other ways to think and live. The Sufi poet Rumi asks “Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?” The answer can only be that it is a prison of our own choosing. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” ~Galatians 5:1 SUNDAY WEST HEIGHTS 9:30AM-Remembrance Meeting AM -Family Bible Hour & Sunday School 11:00 GOSPEL CHAPEL 32060 - 7TH Ave., Mission 826-6915 OR 826-7979

Aiden Rebele is one of several Mission athletes competing at the BC Winter Submitted Photo Games this weekend. Rebele initially joined the Hemlock Ski Team, but more recently joined the Manning club. He qualified for the Games with a strong showing in Whistler earlier this year. “My coach, Kelly Blair, called me and told me and I was really happy,” he said. The 12-year-old is a Grade 7 student at Abbotsford’s MEI. He said it’s going to be an honour to compete for the Fraser Valley zone team. “I’m just going to do my best and try to get a new best time,” he said. Rebele and Emi are two of several Mission athletes competing at the Games. Also heading to Penticton are: ❑ Benjamin Seeley, archery ❑ Charles Cheung, diving ❑ Seth Floyd and Shuntaro Izumi, judo ❑ Shivani Bahadur, Jared Bolland, Janie Green and Annabelle Green, speed skating Mission is also sending a number of official and coaches to the Games, including: Darcy Falk (archery), Glen Ford (judo), Layton Keely (judo), Julian Green (speed skating), Kristina Kreick (speed skating) and Dave McQuaid (speed skating). MLA Abbotsford - Mission

Skiing is all in the family for Mission’s Emi Bryan. Her father Steve Bryan got her on the slopes at the tender age of three, and the feeling of hitting powder was like nothing else she’d ever experienced. “I had the freedom to go really fast and do whatever I wanted to do,” she said, of her days learning the sport in Whistler. Growing up, she saw her two older brothers excel on the Mission Secondary School ski team, and she continued carving away, beginning competitive racing at seven years old. Emi joined the Hemlock Ski Team, and has continued to develop into a strong skier. Her biggest highlight occurred earlier this year, when she placed 29th out of 49 skiers in a U14 Coast Zone race in Whistler in January. Given the majority of the racers were one year older than Emi with a lot more racing experience, this was a great result for her. It marked the first U14 race for Emi, and she said she was thrilled to be tagged to compete at the 2016 BC Winter Games. “I was just so excited,” she said. Emi said her goal for the Games is to do her best to win it all. She added that she’s familiar with the course at Apex, and is feeling confident heading into the races this weekend. She said a lot of her strength comes from the tight bond she’s formed with her friends on the Hemlock Ski Team, where she trains several times a week. “They’re like a family to me,” she said. “I can trust them with anything, and we’re always pushing each other to do better.” The 12-year-old is in Grade 7 at Hatzic Middle School, and plans on attending Mission Secondary School to follow in her brothers’ footsteps on the ski team. Also hitting the slopes is Mission native and Manning Ski Club member Aiden Rebele. His dad introduced him to the slopes, and the rest is history. “My dad used to take me skiing when I was really young and I really liked it,” he said. “I like going really fast and just being outdoors and in the mountains.”

Musical trip down Sa memory lane Tip Tribute band focuses on Everly Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel

If you plan to replace your kitchen or bathroom taps, lever-type or control-arm-type faucet handles are easier to use. Install grab bars in the bathroom, make sure to install them solidly on the wall studs. A hand-held shower head is easier to use when using a bath seat. Door locks and latches should have large, easily manipulated knobs or levers.

Listening to an old favourite can be soothing, especially if you are not a fan of modern music. Hearing a classic song is like visiting with an old friend – it brings you back to a time when life seemed simpler. Mission music fans can hear some old favourites when the musical group Byrd Dawg and the Vintage Electric Band come to town on April 8 to present its Old Friends Tour. The group presents a tribute to two iconic musical duos, the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel. The show will take place at the Clarke Theatre beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at OnTourTickets. com or at the Mission City Record office. Byrd Dawg features Joel Dietrich and Wayne Rempel as lead vocalists. They both grew up listening to those amazing harmonies and lyrics painting vivid pictures. Playing together in bands for several years they discovered their mutual love for singing and harmonizing. They read about Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and many other artists saying they were influenced by Phil and Don Everly. But how did the duo begin performing? “A few years ago we were backing an Elvis tribute artist and doing a lot of back up singing. We found out at that time that our voices had a nice blend and we thought some Everly Brothers songs might be a nice fit to go with the Elvis. After that we

continued learning more of the Everly’s songs and have developed it into the tribute it is now,” said Rempel. Dietrich credits Rempel with coming up with the idea to perform Everly Brothers tunes, while he came up with Simon and Garfunkel. “I think I mentioned that Simon and Garfunkel were heavily influenced by the Everly’s and maybe we should try some of their songs too. It’s just a great fit,” said Dietrich. Both singers agree that their fans come out to hear great classics and take a quick trip down memory lane. “I think our show will most definitely take people back. The songs we’ve selected for this tour should all be pretty well known. With the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel it’s hard to pick a song that isn’t known,” said Dietrich. Rempel said some of the greatest bands in history were influenced by the work of the Everly Brothers. “Artists from the Beatles to Queen. John and Paul even called themselves ‘the English Everly Brothers’ early on. Rolling Stone magazine recently ranked Phil and Don as the greatest musical duo of all time,” said Rempel. The duo said the Mission show will leave the audience smiling cheering, and singing along. “The show has been a lot of fun to put together. I love every song we perform. If you don’t leave the theatre singing or humming one of the tunes you better check your pulse,” said Rempel.

Gord

SAYS Gordon Dainard

What was I thinking? Have you misplaced or forgotten something and begun to wonder if you are having memory loss problems? There is no doubt that our brains change as we age and with this also comes changes in our memory systems. Memory loss is a great concern

for many seniors; however, it’s not an inevitable part of aging. We all have memory lapses from time to time. Misplacing keys, forgetting an acquaintance’s name, forgetting what your spouse asked you to pick up on the way home, are common experiences for people of all ages. It’s important to understand what changes in memory are associated with normal aging and those that are more serious and require medical attention. Generally speaking, our memory peaks in our 20s and then begins to gradually decline. However, research shows that some types of memory decline, various stay constant, and with training, others can even improve as we age. Memory lapses and declines in certain memory systems are a normal part of aging. In contrast, memory changes that negatively affect one’s daily functioning are much more serious. These are typically associated with memory loss and not part of normal aging. Some examples are: Not being able to find your way home while in your neighbourhood; Forgetting how to do everyday things; When memory problems affect your daily living, it may be time to seek out

asweage∙ Have you had “the talk” with your parents yet? If you haven’t, and your parents are over 75, now is probably a really good time. What I’m speaking of is their plans for implementing and paying for the cost of in home care, should one or both of them need extra support at home. The need for care can happen very quickly, due to a fall, an illness, or a sudden flare up of a chronic condition. It’s a fact that 1 in 3 seniors will experience a fall this year. Our provincial health care system provides an excellent level

of emergency help through your local hospital. However, where we see gaps is when a loved one leaves the hospital. What was it that caused the emergency in the first place? Has anything changed at home to prevent it from happening again? Who is going to help with the day to day activities like grocery shopping, cleaning, cooking and laundry? Often, this falls on the family (aka – you, the busiest person on the planet). If no one is there to help, they often end up back

in the hospital over and over again. The vast majority of seniors want to stay in their home as long as possible. It’s also a fact that people recover better at home. And people who are monitored by a health professional in their first week home from leaving the hospital, have a significantly reduced chance of getting sick again and returning. If that’s the case, planning ahead for home care is the only way to make that happen. I know this from personal

Carol Lange, Owner/Care Designer

Did you know you don’t have to move into Assisted Living to have assisted living? It’s true. You can have the freedom of living safely and securely, all in your own familiar home. If you want help with nutritious meals, housekeeping, driving to appointments, getting groceries, and getting out to activities you enjoy, you don’t have to move into an assisted living apartment. We can set up your own unique wellness program that provides safety, security, healthy meals,

transportation, grocery shopping, housekeeping and fun outings and community experiences. We will help fall-proof your home and keep your mobility up. And when needed, extra care can come home too. Similar to doctors that make ‘house calls’, if you need help with medication, mobility, or personal care, our CertiÀed Care Aides and Licensed Nurses come to assist – in the comfort of your own home.

up 24/7 Care Service, and brought mom home. Although she was on a small disability pension and cash poor, she did own her house that was paid for many years ago. Without selling, we were able to access the equity in her home which we used to pay for the care she so desperately needed. Because we did not have “the talk” before she was deemed incapable of decision making, she paid a steep legal bill in order for me to assist her with her financial decision making. It is much better (andmuch cheaper) to do this while loved ones are still 100% capable. You may also want to remind them to review their life insurance, update wills, and create a Power Of Attorney for the future. I urge you to start talking with your parents about their wishes, so that if and when they need your help, you’ve got a plan. Bring in professionals to talk about their specific situation and

make sure they have information about home care costs, what is actually provided by the government, how long it takes to access government care, setting up a mortgage or line of credit, etc... Planning for it now is what will allow them to stay in their own home as long as possible. If you think these decisions are tough to make now, waiting will only make them harder. I’m here to say it absolutely IS possible for people to stay in the home they love and raised a family in, with the support and care that they need, and still provide a healthy inheritance for the remaining family members (I know from experience!) In order for that to happen, you must have a good plan in place so start today! Carol Lange is the local owner of Nurse Next Door Homecare Services and can be reached at 604-468-2273, or carol@nursenextdoormr.com.

experience. Around 2003, before I ever knew about Nurse Next Door, my mom was diagnosed with Dementia. I had no idea what that meant at the time, but over the next 2 years, I witnessed a decline in her capabilities that landed her in the local hospital every few months. She was fiercely independent, and refused help, but finally it reached the point where the doctors would no longer allow her to return home without 24/7 supervision. My mom had expressed over and over to my brother and me that she did NOT want to move from her home of 40+ years, and she did not want to go to a nursing home. So I set about making that happen without knowing how much it would cost, or how to pay for it. I consulted a company like Nurse Next Door, plus legal help, as well as a Financial Planner with experience working with seniors. Together we set

Author tells a novel tale Kevin MILLS MISSION RECORD

Walter Schmur loves to write. It’s not an attribute you would expect in a man who spent most of his life working with numbers rather than words.

The 75-year-old, longtime Mission resident and former accountant, has penned a fantasy/ sports/golf novel called Strike While the Iron’s Hot. He began the project in March of 2014 and finished a year later.

“I had it printed in May of 2015. I had 50 copies published. Paid for it myself,” said Schmur. The aspiring author is now promoting his book around the Fraser valley and across the world. Schmur travelled to England on vacation

and decided to bring some copies of his new novel with him. He only left a few, but he also went on a cruise and left two copies in the ship’s library. “It’s probably still sailing around different parts of the world.” He has given away several books to friends and family and sold about 20 copies as well. “I’m getting back some of my money, but it’s never enough,” he joked. Schmur decided to write about golf because of his familiarity with the sport. “I’ve been a fan and a player, I’m not a great golfer, but I can play the game.” He said the novel is a Fraser valley story, taking place on the Cheam Mountain Golf Course in Chilliwack. BERGEN

JACOBS Late of Maple Ridge, B.C., age 90 years. Blondie was one of the sweetest women that walked this earth. She loved her friends and her family and was fiercely loyal to both. She was graceful and classy. She was an excellent host and cook. She was creative, loved to paint and was passionate about beauty. She loved wine and travelling. She was private, yet exuded warmth. She was independent, yet soft and feminine. She was so incredibly grateful for everything. She was beautiful… in every possible way, right up until the end of her life. She was loved by everyone who knew her. Predeceased by her sons, Sandy and Brian. Survived by her loving grand-daughter Brandy and greatgrand children Nevaeh and Charlotte. Memorial tea service to be held Saturday, March 5, at 2:30 pm at Cedarbrook Retirement Residence 32331 7th Avenue, Mission, BC.

UNDERHILL Carolyn July 19, 1952 ~ February 6, 2016

In Loving Memory Grandmother, daughter, sister, wife, friend to all, and a mother of three! That was our mom, Carolyn Underhill. One of the most wonderful, caring and loving people, has passed on; however she will always be remembered and never forgotten. Anyone who had the chance to get to know our mom would surely agree that they were extremely fortunate. That we are truly blessed, and happy to know that she is in a better place. We all know you were welcomed up there with open doors.

We love you mom!

Cornelius

Teresa (Terri)/Ross Gust, Colleen/Hasse Marthinsen and Roger/ Judi Holt would love if you could join us to celebrate the wonderful, exciting, fun-filled life of our mom. Her home was always full of love and laughter with family and friends. Mom was so very caring and her home was open to anyone and everyone. She also raised us to be respectful, caring people and we passed that on to our own families. Mom and Dad truly enjoyed their life moving many times throughout the years but they always stayed in BC. Most of the moves were due to Dad’s job and each time they moved they made more lifelong friends. Mom would join Dad when he went fishing along with their beloved kitty, Namu, who would be right alongside them ~ (wait for the humorous story about this when you attend the party). Our brother Martin tragically passed away as well and he is still missed every day. We always had animals (cats, dogs, budgies) growing up in our life so if you wish to donate to your local Humane Society in Mom’s honour it would be appreciated. There will be a donation box at Mom’s “party” so you can donate there if you wish. Stay tuned as there will be more exciting news about Mom’s plans with Dad and Martin when you attend Mom’s party........ The Celebration of Life will be held at Mission Legion, 32327 Logan Avenue, Mission, BC at 11:00 am. Any questions you can call me at home 604-826-6414, Facebook or email me at terri.gust@fraserhealth.ca.

FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Cornelius Bergen was born on the farm north of Saskatoon on June 5, 1919 to Franz and Anna Bergen. On February 14, 2016, with his family at his side, he passed peacefully in Mission Hospital due to the complications from a fall. He is survived by Anne, his wife of 76 years and seven children: Lois (Gerald), Carole (Brian), Beverley (Ernie), James (Wen Xia), Gaydene, Lorene (Andy) and Robert (Laurie). His son Peter predeceased him in 2009. Cornelius also leaves sixteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. He was a true Renaissance man. Among many others, his interests included wood carving, politics, science and even the Hawaiian independence movement. He was never one to shy away from controversial topics, a man of curiosity and intellect with a life long love of learning. He held the firm belief that everyone had a bit of the genius but few ever reached their potential. He did not see problems, only solutions. Cornelius was a selftaught man, proficient in many trades. For many years, he ran a small construction company in Burns Lake. Then, at the age of fifty-five, he took up farming, developing a 1460 acre grain and seed farm from raw, tree-covered land north of Fort St. John. At the age of seventy, he designed and built his retirement home in Mission, doing most of the trade work himself. At his request, extended family held a Celebration of Life for him which was held on Wednesday, February 17. He also requested that his body be used for medical research at UBC. In his memory, you may send donations to the BC Children’s Hospital or the Red Cross.

STRAKON Claire February 28, 1949 ~ February 16, 2016 It is with great sorrow that we announce Claire’s battle with cancer has come to an end. Our loving wife and mother passed away peacefully, surrounded by love on February 16, 2016. She was one of 8 siblings born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan but has been living in the Fraser Valley for over 50 years. She is survived by her loving husband, Dennis, two sons, Lawrence Kimber (Jessica) and Troy Kimber (Lianna), her four grandchildren, seven siblings and many nieces and nephews. Claire was always working to improve her lot in life and as a result of her ambition, achieved many skills throughout her life. Among them was her amazing talent as an artist in needlepoint. Those who have received some of her pieces count themselves lucky. She was an accomplished martial artist and one of the first female pilots in the Fraser Valley. She was a constant volunteer in various groups and organizations. Always working to lessen the suffering of others. Her strengths, courage and determination, in fighting her battle, should be an inspiration to us all. Right up to the very end she blessed us with the joy and grace of her extraordinary spirit. She will be profoundly missed by those of us who loved and cherished her. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all her friends and family that supported and loved her through the years. In particular we would like to thank Dr. Gurjal, Dr. Cook and the staff at the Abbotsford Cancer Clinic, and the staff in Cheam Palliative Care who gave her exceptional care during her battle. They treated not only her body, but her spirit with dignity, care and compassion. Not a word was left unsaid, not a feeling unexpressed. She can now rest peacefully knowing she was loved.

OBITUARIES

FISHER Donald Thorp October 11, 1940 ~ January 28, 2016 Don was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on October 11, 1940 and spent the majority of his formative years in the Vancouver area. He married his wife Ramona in 1965 and together they had a son, Ken, in 1970 and a daughter, Sharon (Shari), in 1981. He worked at Ellett Industries in Port Coquitlam for the majority of his adult life, until he retired in 2006. In 1989 he and his family moved to the McConnell Creek area of Mission where he soon became deeply involved in the community. As a skilled Millwright maintenance guy and all-around Jack-Of-All-Trades, he was always helping a neighbor with something when he wasn’t busy with his family. He is survived by his wife Ramona, son Ken, daughter Shari, grandsons Michael and Johnny, his sister Eleanor and brother Rob, as well as daughter-in-law Kelly and several nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, whether they knew him all their lives or for just a brief moment. He was the kind of guy who was instantly remembered for his warm smile, friendly attitude and willingness to help others. A small memorial service will be held for family and friends to celebrate his life on Saturday, February 27th at 2:00 pm. It will be held at The Residence in Mission (7324 Hurd St., located near the rear of Mission Memorial Hospital). Please come share your stories and help us honour the memories of an unforgettable husband, father, brother and friend.

NEW LISTING – BARE LAND MAPLE RIDGE $279,500 “When we were relocating, a family member recommended us to Bob. When we met we were immediately comfortable with him as his easygoing and fun nature shone through. We looked at SO many homes, some twice, and Bob never once showed any impatience, never rushing us through. He listened to the needs and stipulations we had and showed us places that were within our guidelines, not trying to push us into something else. Our purchasing experience was unique in that, even we were selling and buying, which is the norm, the timelines had to be so tight to make it work, and Bob smoothed everything through with incredible ease (from what we saw). Any stress and anxiety that goes along with purchasing a home was taken care of with professionalism and integrity. In the future, should the need arise, there would be no question or hesitation as to who my realtor would be.” Mr. & Mrs. Mcadie
