The Port Alberni RCMP have arrested a suspect in the 2012 murder of Mervin Hankins. “On Feb. 26, 46-yearold Channon Coulter— previously a resident of Port Alberni—was arrested without incident for the second-degree murder of Mervin Hankins,” RCMP Inspector Mac Richards said at a press conference. Hankins was found dead in his Fourth Avenue home on Jan. 13, 2012 by a relative. He was 75. “His son-in-law discovered him unresponsive and lying on his living room floor,” said Richards. “Port Alberni RCMP responded and in speaking with Mervin’s son-inlaw, noted there to be a number of items missing from his residence. he mouth of the Alberni Inlet will soon look a lot different as the Huu-ay-aht First Nations ramp up their investment in the area. The HFN purchased 11 properties in and around Bamfield in January. The purchases include Rance Island, the Bamfield Airport and the Kingfisher Lodge and Marina. According to Coun. Trevor Cootes, who is the councillor in charge of economic development, the purchases were an investment in the Huu-ayaht’s long-term future. “What would a strong Hua-ay-aht economy look like? A big part is that we need to have a strong presence within our traditional territory. We have treaty settlement land and we have traditional territory. Bamfield falls into that traditional territory,” said Cootes. The Huu-ay-aht’s economic plan—set for completion in the spring— was another reason

behind the purchase. “A large component of the economic plan is not to necessarily just looking at what we’ll be doing during my term or looking at five-year plans

but taking that idea of planning for the future,” said Cootes. “Something that’s often used right now is planning for seven generations down the road.”

The purchases will help not only Huu-ay-aht—they used to be owned by the notorious Jack Purdy, who owned many Bamfield properties as well as some in Port Alberni.

“Those properties were being held by an asset company, and they used to be Purdy’s properties,” said Cootes. “There was an asset company out of Alberta that wanted to unload all these properties.” Purdy—the subject of numerous police and FBI investigations—has promised since 2011 that he would invest “millions” into Bamfield, but nothing ever materialized and buildings sat empty. The Huu-ay-aht saw the opportunity to invest and jumped on the deal. “All 11 were a package deal... the seller didn’t want to break up the package,” Cootes said. Some of the 11 properties are unlikely to be developed anytime soon. “The airstrip is a longterm investment. We want to keep the opportunity open,” said Cootes. “Half the properties wouldn’t be necessarily desirable for businesses to come in but for Huu-ayaht, it’s very desirable... Cont’d on A3

The Port Alberni Port Authority has undertaken a study of its economic impact in the region in an attempt to underscore the value that investment in it can generate. “When we’re speaking with provincially elected officials and at the federal level, to have those types of real economic numbers when we talk about the larger investments we want to make helps give us legitimacy and credibility as an economic driver,” said PAPA director of public relations and business development Dave McCormick. The port authority undertook a similar study back in 2012 that found its total direct, indirect and induced economic output to be $492 million in 2012. That

figure includes the “impacts of ongoing operations at PAPA and ships’ crew spending at Port Alberni.” With recent developments like the attraction of CanTimber,

Huu-ay-aht focusing on coast tourism

...because we know we’re going to be there for generations to come so those lands are very important to our economic growth.” The Huu-ay-aht, who have talked about investing in culture-based tourism in their traditional territories, are gearing up to provide a full visitor experience in Bamfield. Purchases of restaurants and hotels meshed well with the Huu-ay-aht’s current properties in the area. “The Bamfield Motel is a 30-40 unit motel with a pub attached to it. It works very well with their tourism... it sits beside the restaurant and general store that we bought and it sits in between that and the government dock that we own,” said Cootes. “It’s a great strategic piece for the overall focus for our tourism plan.” The purchases will expand the experience that the Huu-ay-aht can offer in their traditional territories at the mouth of the Inlet. “The progression is that we had the Pachena Bay Campground and the gas bar, then we bought the restaurant and general store and then the motel just

add another piece to that,” said Cootes. “We’ll be able to offer a very diverse and complete package for tourists.” No matter the style of traveler that comes to Bamfield, Cootes said, the Huu-ayaht will be able to accommodate them. “We have a campground, it’s very economical. The motel is a little step up,” he said. The motel works well with the Huuay-aht’s government dock. “The motel is so close to it so it supports fishermen coming in. They’re using our dock and now we can provide accommodations for them.” They hope to offer accommodations and amenities to any visitors, including passengers off the Frances Barkley, and far outmatch what’s been done in the past. “We want to provide people with a product. Jack Purdy wasn’t known as the greatest business developer,” said Cootes. “With Huu-ay-aht playing a bigger part now there’s going to be more energy, more staff, more focus on the attracting tourists and utilizing the ones that are there already.” The Huu-ay-aht

hope to work with the Bamfield community in their initiatives and have their own growth benefit the entire region. “That’s something that’s been in place for a long time. Our previous chief was always one that invited the Bamfield community out to our events to include them and also to partner with the Bamfield community,” said Cootes. He sees a larger role for local first nations in the landscape of the region. “The Uchucklesaht, in developing their business and their government business here, is an opportunity for Nuuchah-nulth to develop more tourism in Port Alberni. I think it’s an opportunity to promote Nuu-chahnulth.” Cootes, who

worked in the guiding industry for close to a decade, wants to take advantage of tourists already headed to the Pacific Rim. “We have the abundance going to Tofino and Ucluelet but we also have a large amount going through the West Coast Trail,” he said. “International travelers, they view the Island differently. They see Pac Rim as Pac Rim and I know Pac Rim is always looking to better themselves and inevitably Tofino is in a good place and Ucluelet is starting to get to a good place. “Even the Barkley Sound is in a good spot with the amount of paddlers that go there so naturally the last frontier is the West Coast and we’re going to develop around that.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

While he was in Victoria pushing the No. 7 Challenge, Collette was inspired

hen Brian Callender organized the first “No. 7 Challenge” three years ago, he saw it as an opportunity to create a unique destination race for runners. Inspired by a similar event while living in Australia, Callendar returned to his hometown, networked with the running community and held the first “race the train” run on Aug. 17, 2013. Despite little advertising outside of Port Alberni, the race attracted about 40 participants who ran from the train station to McLean Mill alongside the steam train route. It was well-received and carried on for the next two years. Numbers dropped, but the potential for a signature

by the interest and brainstormed ideas to make it bigger. “I wondered how we could take it further, so I thought about a tri-concept,” he said. That is when he came up with the proposed Iconic Challenge. Initial plans include a swim portion at Sproat Lake following the Canada Day parade. He had hoped swimmers would be able to swim out to the Martin Mars bombers as the first iconic attraction, but whether the Mars will be on the water by then is iffy. “That is the tricky part because we’ve discussed the possibility of it being available but as that can’t be confirmed for some time we will be looking at various options,” Collette said. That evening will be highlighted with fireworks at Harbour Quay. “Friday, July 2 will be the really interesting day,” Collette said. “Now the icon becomes the Frances Barkley.” Mountain bike racers will start at Harbour Quay in an attempt to beat the vessel to Bamfield. He said it is possible because the boat will

race capturing the Valley’s historic icon, has captured the interest of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce. Bill Collette, executive director of the chamber, is spearheading a new marketing campaign for the No. 7 Challenge, but also has plans for multi-sport athletes to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary in Port Alberni in 2017. “I got wind of it being on the McLean Mill committee and decided to push it,” said Collette. A number of strategies have already been put into place and he said marketing the idea will be key. Part of that included the purchase of a trade show booth skin with images of the train and McLean Mill. “We brought a backdrop to the

VARIABLE FARES «TEN YEARS AGO COULD BE A FERRY FIX

erry fares are going to start bobbing up and down, and there’s a possibility Island passengers could be better served because of it. B.C. Ferries is planning to roll out variable pricing, with the most expensive fares at peak hours and discounted fares on the least-popular crossings. The intention is to try to fill up some of the emptier, moneylosing trips, with the added benefit of potentially relieving pressure elsewhere on the sailing schedule. It’s a tried-and-true model used by other types of transportation companies, such as airlines, which would go out of business in a hurry if they sent half-full jumbo jets flying around the globe. Good business practice at B.C. Ferries matters to British Columbians who subsidize the corporation. Dollars and cents can’t always be the primary consideration – ferries are an essential transportation link and must provide a service – but any relief from subsidies and fare increases will be appreciated, now and in the future. A new fare model is likely to benefit Island residents who understand ferry ridership patterns and plan our travel accordingly, avoiding the worst of the long-weekend lineups. Part of us hopes that variable pricing might end up as a sort of tax on tourists who aren’t as familiar with the ferry system. It’s a selfish notion, perhaps, but certainly we on Vancouver Island will continue to pay our fair share of rising fares. Some commuters, unfortunately, will get dinged by the variable fare scheme, and for any of us, peak-hour ferry rides will be unavoidable sometimes. Ultimately, we’re going to be taking the ferry no matter what, and paying the fares we’re charged. If B.C. Ferries can find better ways to make its service efficient, affordable and sustainable, then hey, that floats our boat. — NANAIMO NEWS BULLETIN

Move more, eat better to reduce your risk

At the last medical check-up, the physician mentions that blood work shows ‘borderline diabetes’ and it is suggested to lose some of that extra weight. Although the word ‘diabetes’ evokes a bit of a shocked reaction, those years of sedentary work, eating convenience fast food too often, drinking some beer after work and that gradual weight gain twigs a certain sense of realization that this news was bound to

Yet, instead, this news should be taken as a serious wake-up call and warning of a lifestyle disease that may take fifteen to twenty years off the end of life. The course of which could still be altered for a better outcome with small adjustments to daily

living. Along with elevated blood sugar (‘borderline diabetes’ as some refer to this state), the growing ‘spare tire’ around the middle, higher than normal blood pressure readings and cholesterol abnormalities points to a condition known as “metabolic syndrome”. Identified as a medical condition less than thirty years ago, metabolic syndrome affects more than 47 million North Americans and one in six people. Metabolic Syndrome is not a disease in itself, but is

a cluster or group of risk factors that once combined double the risk of blood vessel disease, heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes and increase risk of developing diabetes by five times. It may soon overtake smoking as the leading cause of heart disease worldwide. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute indicate that a diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome requires at least two of the following risk factors, in addition to abdominal obesity. Any two of the following risk factors include; elevated Triglycerides, high blood pressure (or on medications for blood pressure), low HDL cholesterol (High

As metabolic syndrome has many lifestyle causes, chances of developing metabolic syndrome increase with a sedentary, inactive lifestyle, eating lots of processed foods, having insulin resistance (body doesn’t use insulin properly), and hormonal imbalances. Family history, ethnicity/race and increasing age are also risk factors, but are not within an individual’s control to change. There is still time to improve health through daily lifestyle changes. The main goal of treatment is to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and diabetes development. Moving more can improve many of the risk factors for metabolic syndrome, including lowering blood sugar levels, improving blood cholesterol, reducing insulin resistance, lowering blood pressure, which can all help to support heart function. Making dietary adjustments to help lose extra fat around the middle will lower bad cholesterol levels and reduce all of the risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Identifying

dietary pitfalls, such as overeating at meal times, evening snacking, overindulging in sweet or salty food cravings, including highly processed convenience and fast foods often will help to pin point areas for improvements to address for change. Quitting smoking is critical. Walking daily or swimming and/or cycling and joining programs or drop-in sports can all be ways to improve exercise tolerance gradually without injury. Gentle weight-bearing activity can also help with improving muscle strength for better metabolism. Yoga, dancing, Zumba, Pilates and Tai Chi

will all help improve balance and flexibility. There is a comparison about the term ‘borderline diabetes’. Like pregnancy, a person is either pregnant or not pregnant and the same goes for diabetes, there is no ‘borderline’ diabetes. Take this occurrence at the physician’s office as an opportunity to ask questions and start on a journey of improving health through lifestyle changes. within an easy paddle of China Creek Marina, too. Cous Creek, MacTush Creek and Franklin River are all within 6 km of the beach there. This offers multiple options for pleasant day or overnight trips in the area. Going any further is a little problematic because the next suitable landing spots are unknown to me. And it is still 30 km to the end of the inlet and the prime paddling locations of the Deer Group and the Broken Islands. That’s a long paddle to do in a day. If the community is serious about attracting this activity to the area, a better idea of where

so clear you could see the pebbles on the bottom beaneath us as we passed by. We watched an American Dipper swimming below the place where the creek met the inlet. This was pretty unusual for a perching bird. Later, we listened to its loud wonderful song as it perched on a log a few feet away. The way back was along the shore opposite to the way we arrived. The wind had come up a bit and there were a few waves. So the trip back was a little exercise and it took a couple of hours to arrive at Canal Beach. But by 3:30 p.m. we were looking for a latté at SteamPunk Café. It occurs to me that until lately there has been very little infrastructure for this kind of activity around the end of the Alberni Inlet. If you wanted to kayak, you had to use the boat ramp either at Clutesi Haven or at Harbour Quay. But the latter one is very steep, making a launch from there very difficult for most people. And in both cases you potentially have to

couple of weeks ago Robert Gunn and I took a little day trip in kayaks down to the estuary of Cous Creek five kilometres down the Alberni Inlet. The weather promised sun. But this was February and the inlet is notorious for lingering fog. I had planned to catch the high tide expected around 12:40 so that we could paddle up the creek as far as possible. I figured it would be a leisurely two-hour paddle. We left from Canal Beach around 10:30 a.m. in the fog and followed the shore past Polly’s Point and Coulson’s mill. Before we knew it, we were at the narrows across from the creek, and it was only 11 a.m. Although the tide was against us, the light breeze was behind us and made our progress quick and easy. As we made the crossing, the fog started lifting and a brilliant day greeted us. We were astonished to see four women and a dog on the shore as we approached the delta. It turned out to be the Ladies Tuesday Hikers group. They had hiked down from the Arbutus summit on a little known trail. The tide was so high that we were concerned that they might get wet feet if they didn’t leave soon. I’m happy to report they were fine. We went on up the creek and enjoyed the flat, calm water in the narrow confines of the creek mouth. It was

Overview The Long Beach Airport (YAZ), is situated 11km south of Tofino and 30 km north of Ucluelet on the Pacific Rim Highway. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the Pacific Rim National Park. RFP Specifications Goals and Objectives: The objective of the RFP is to enter into an agreement for services that will provide branding and marketing services to YAZ, including, but not limited to: Identity Airport “brand” (logo and tag messages) and development of a branding strategy. 1. Investigate the possible renaming of the airport; 2. Develop a branding strategy; 3. Create and design a color palette, tag line and brand standards; 4. Identify ways to incoporate new brand to market to public; 5. Develop content that could assist in media/marketing. Scope of Services: 1. Create the brand at YAZ; 2. Create a consistent mesage and color scheme; 3. Evaluate the two current websites and make recommendations for future development; 4. Create a marketing plan to promote the airport to increase passenger movements. Port Alberni is about to get a brand new annual arts festival to celebrate the start of summer. The Solstice Arts Festival will take place in Port Alberni’s Arts District over three days, June 17–19. The Solstice Arts Festival brings four Alberni Valley Festivals together under one umbrella for an unforgettable weekend of art exhibits, music, theatrical performances and street entertainment fun for the whole family. Seed funding for the festival was distributed by the Rotary Arts District grant program amongst four groups. The Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley (“Days with the Arts”) spearheaded the festival, joined by Portal Players Dramatic Society (improv/music), Alberni Art Rave Society (“Art Rave”) and the Art Matters Society (“Festival of Artistic Creative Expression”= F.A.C.E.) in bringing this new community event to the Rotary Arts District. The principal objective of the Solstice Arts Festival is to encourage excellence in all forms of arts and crafts, and to assist in the promotion and sale of quality work, celebrating arts, crafts and music, according to a group spokesperson. Wilhemus was born in 1925 in the Netherlands. He emigrated to Canada on his honeymoon with Mary landing on the east coast of Canada by boat in 1952. They worked for farmers in Saskatchewan, then mill work in Vernon, before ending up in Port Alberni. Dad worked for over thirty years as a planerman mechanic at Somass Mill. Willemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passions were foremost his family, friends, farming, horses, gardening, cars and driving, old Western Dusters, nature shows and second helpings of good food. Dad was the happiest man with the simplest of lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pleasures and absolutely loved Port Alberni and Canada. He taught us all how to live a good and kind life and he was a true gentleman.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 2nd, Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, 4731 Burke Road, with Father Stephen Paine officiating.

Deryl Gregory Voysey December 29,1956~February 21,2016 It is with great sadness that the Voysey family is announcing the passing of Deryl Gregory Voysey on February 21,2016. Deryl was born December 29th,1956 in Port Alberni. He is survived by his parents Sid and Peggy Voysey, sister Cindy(Dennis) brothers Rod (Linda), Lorne (Patricia), Larry (Darlene) and Kevin (Barb). As well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Deryl also leaves his wonderful caregivers of 20 years Bridgette Townsend and her son,Trevor. He had great affection and connection with Bridgette. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

Ed was born in Saanich, moved to Duncan with his parents, then settled in Port Alberni. He married Grace (Gillan) in 1949, whom, after 52 years of marriage, passed away. He is survived by his loving sister, Dorothy (Martin-Taylor), Daughters Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Lona (Les), Anita (Barry) and his son Dan (Joy). He will be sadly missed by grandchildren, Len (Megan), Jeff (Char), Tami (Paul) and Chris (Rhonda) and 10 great-grandchildren. Ed spent his career at Woodwardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department Store, where he was fondly remembered from the hardware department. The most important things in life were his children. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was an active Trap Shooter at the Port Alberni Gun Club. He enjoyed fishing for salmon, but was passionate about trout fishing. He travelled all through B.C .and had a few local lakes that he enjoyed, spending many hours with his good friend Angie at Fredrick Lake. Andy passed away peacefully in Port Alberni on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the age of 78. Andy is survived by his loving wife Francine; children Rudy (Kelly), Sue (Tom), Leanne; grandchildren Taylor, T.J., Darren (Natasia), and Jenn. Born in Belgium, Andy immigrated to Port Alberni with his new bride in 1959. He began working on the docks in February 1960 and continued working as a Longshoreman until his retirement in 1998. Andy was ‘a genius in his own right’ because he had a natural ability to fix anything. He was an accomplished craftsman and proud of the fish he smoked for people near and far. A special thank you to the nurses, staff and volunteers at Home and Community Care and Ty Watson House. The family will hold a private memorial at a later date.
