Jason Rasmussen read an excerpt from one of the letters to the media who were present when the stolen mail was handed over. “I was very glad to get your letter at last. I couldn’t imagine what had happened to you,” the letter said. Rasmussen and his sisters appeared amazed that the long ago letters between their grandpa and a great-aunt were found. “It is absolutely amazing,” Rasmussen said. “What are the odds?” The siblings explained that their grandpa, who served with the Canadian Army, Overseas; 40th Battery, 11th Field Regiment, talked about the war very little. They said he lived alone after their grandma died and was a private man. In his later years he lived in a nurs-

After a judicial interim release hearing, Holmgren was released from Rimbey Detachment on bail, and is scheduled to appear in court in Rimbey on Mar. 4, 2016. Holmgren has also been charged with possession of a stolen firearm and other firearm offenses including a firearms prohibition order, unsafe transportation of a firearm for a purpose dangerous to public peace and possession of break in tools. Holmgren has been released on bail. Meanwhile RCMP continue to investigate the matter and Const. Carman Dutz said it has not been determined how the mail got in the car. “That remains a mystery,” he said.

Trish Rasmussen said her grandpa lied about his age and joined the army when he was only 16, serving overseas when he was still a teenager. The siblings scanned the letters while at the RCMP detachment, a play of emotion clearly visible on their faces. “He was a front gunner on the front lines. It is amazing he made it back at all,” said Jason. “I can’t wait to read all of them.” He said the letters were verbal proof that his grandpa was loved and missed. “It will be pretty emotional, especially for our mom,” he said.”These letters show he was very caring, loving. The war had changed him. It would change anybody.” The letters mysteriously

Bowl for Kids’ Sake coming soon BY ANNETTE PECK It’s time once again to Bowl for Kids’ Sake! It’s almost time to slip on the bowling shoes and raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rimbey at the fifth annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake. The event, to be held on Sunday, March 6 at Striker’s Alley, is sure to be fun for everyone and the money raised supports mentorships right here in Rimbey. Whether you decide to bowl with family, friends or staff, sponsor a bowler or a lane, donate food or prizes or volunteer for part or the day, your efforts will be greatly appreciated. At this point in the winter everyone needs to have some fun and the Mardi Gras theme adds excitement. As always, we will have lots of hourly and fundraising prizes, contests and games, and delicious snacks throughout the day donated by local restaurants and caterers. Fundraising has been more challenging this year for very good rea-
son. The changes we have experienced in our local economy have put added pressure on local families and made the need for mentors even more critical. We still want people to be aware that the most precious donation is their time. Growing up, kids are at
an impressionable stage. If they don’t have many positive role models to guide them, they will look to whoever happens to be around. Sometimes those options are not very positive and may come from such questionable resources as television, video games and movies.
The kids who chose these role models the ones who just need the peace of mind and security of knowing that someone real is there for them. We are fortunate to have about 40 mentorships each year in Rimbey but some children still wait too long to be matched.
The majority of our volunteers are women and they do a fantastic job. Some boys need a male influence and some conversations can only happen with another guy. Volunteers are always surprised by how much they get back from their mentorships, and all they need to do is show up and be themselves. Most play games, cards, read or bake and everything needed is provided. The program helps teach kids
that the best things in life are free, and just an hour a week for one year, is a gift that a child will keep for a lifetime. We are proud of our Big Brothers Big Sisters program and want it to continue – but we need your help. Treena Mielke On The Other Side I’m not sure what is the worst day of the week. They always talk about blue Mondays like they are a bad thing, but then we get around to Friday and it’s like everyone is thinking TGIF (thank goodness it’s Friday). That’s how I felt last Friday. On that day, it seemed like my brain could only absorb that one thought! TGIF. I dragged my sorry little self home and gracefully retired to my bed even before I could fall asleep on the couch while the open-

kind of grandma does that?) By Sunday, I felt much better, so much better, so much more alive. I decided to go the gym. I arrived early. It was only about 6:30 a.m. and here I was off to the gym just like the self-disciplined type person whom I know lives inside me somewhere. Wow! This is awesome, I think, momentarily forgetting I was also the type of person who would steal part of a candy-coated donut from a baby. I notice there is no one else at the gym and I feel good. Pumped. I will have the whole gym to myself, I think gleefully. I like it when that happens. I bound up the steps and get my access card ready to swipe. It was then
I looked in the glass door. There was nothing there. The entire gym was gone. Apparently, it had moved. What? I refuse to feel elated, instead choosing to feel mad. What kind of gym is this? Moving on me, when I’m all ready to pump some iron. My mad feeling stays with me for about two and a half seconds. Actually, I’m elated. I don’t have to work out! Yeah! Someone moved the gym. I can go home and drink coffee or, better yet, go back to bed. I can hardly believe my luck. As it so happened, the gym moved to a new location over the weekend and it is now back in full service, thank you very much. I was there this morn-
ing, grudgingly back to the old routine. Treadmill, weights, blah, blah, blah! Welcome to Monday. I force myself to stay on the treadmill until I have burned 100 calories which seems to take until Tuesday. Today, however, as I was treading along on the treadmill, some dear, sweet lady came along and said, “ma’am, did you know your shoelaces are untied? I don’t want you to trip.” I mustered up some dignity and said, “of course, I know, but I can’t quit running or I will lose my calorie count and have to start over.” She looked at me in sympathy and shook her head and walked away and I reluctantly pressed ‘stop.’ Mondays! What a way to start the week!
Columnist celebrates first year anniversary, maybe
Proofing Deadline Friday at 10 a.m.
Production:
ing credits of some Netflix movie flashed on and off the screen. I managed to rouse myself Saturday with some semblance of my usual get up and go, simply because I am the grandma of a future NHL star and I had to make it to the arena by 9 a.m. to encourage him to keep skating really hard for about another 10 years and not to let that little girl in a pink helmet who is also seven and on his team keep hogging the puck. Anyway, my get up and go got up and went as soon as the three 20 minute periods ended and my future NHL star and his mom and his brothers all went to Tim Horton’s to be treated to those really delicious donuts with icing and sprinkles. Not me, of course. I sipped my black coffee mournfully mentally calculating how many calories such a donut would carry inside its sinfully decorated self. I figured it out, but still my eyes were glued to the eye candy and I finally snuck a small bite of the baby’s donut. (what
This might be my one year anniversary as a columnist at the Rimbey Review. I’m a little uncertain though. This column could be a month too early, or it could be pretty close based on nothing more that some of my recent reflections. I think it was Steven Martin (the funny guy) that said something to the effect of: after doing
something long enough, you can say you’ve been doing it for ten years. Ironically, he was talking about playing the banjo and not comedy. My complete career as a mechanic lasted a decade. I spent a few years as an apprentice and a few years with a ticket under my belt. For the purposes of a resume, time spent doing something counts for something. Career epochs have this weird value attached to them, as if more time enhances the value of something. People feel similar about old cars and old books. The time/value concept is arbitrary though. Who’s to say that my one year anniversary as a columnist is a big success; maybe it’s not and the measure of success comes at thirteen months rather than
twelve. Regardless of how long I’ve been attached to my weekly homework assignment for the Rimbey Review, I have written some good columns, some bad columns, and some noteworthy columns. I’ve done my best to produce something unique and curious to read every week. I’ll admit that I’ve missed, forgotten, or simply decided not to write a weekly column; and other times I may have been tangled up in a motorcycle mission, wrote complete garbage, and thankfully my editor quietly sends those e-mailed columns to the trash folder. It was during the fall last year when I was at my grandfather’s house during the same time the guy was over that mowed grandpa’s grass. The landscaper asked me what it
was like writing for the paper. I may have been on a birdhouse building shift in grandpa’s garage when I was asked and was subsequently completely taken by surprise. I didn’t know how to answer what it was like. I was just happy that someone out there was reading my work. There has been other times when people from town catch me at the post office. Hey, I like the style of your writing, they say to me. Cool, I’m glad someone is reading my stuff, is often how I respond. I ran into an old acquaintance at the grocery store a few months ago. He stopped me in the aisle that has all the canned fish just to talk about a recent column I had wrote. It feels good to learn that my stuff is being read. There is a gal I know
through Red Deer College, and she suggests I try to get a gig writing for a larger publication. Nah I said. I like writing for the Rimbey Review. Why? It’s simple, I can write and submit about whatever is on my mind that week. If I got a spot writing in a larger paper, they would likely try to govern my column’s direction and send me to Bower Ponds three times a year to write about the ducks. A mutual friend through one of my old Rimbey Ford co-workers said he liked my writing because it is about my life. This guy said he didn’t care about what colour someone in town painted their house. Maybe there is something intrinsically different about a year’s worth of my columns that I should proud of.

RCMP busy maintaining law and order in Rimbey and district BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey RCMP continue to deal with impaired drivers, illegal drugs and break-ins. Const. Carman Dutz reported that a 55-year-old Bluffton woman is to appear in Rimbey Provincial Court on March 4 to face a drunk driving charge. Susan Peters was traveling south on Hwy. 20 near Bentley at around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 when the vehicle she was driving drifted into the northbound lane, sideswiping another vehicle. Peters suffered minor injuries and was taken to Rimbey Hospital, but was later released. The other driver was not injured.
Cost. Dutz said on Feb. 22, Rimbey RCMP stopped a vehicle in front of The Bargain Store after receiving a call about a suspected impaired driver. Four people were arrested and later two females were charged in the incident. “Amber Achtemichuk, 39, from the Rimbey area was charged with possession of drugs and possession of stolen property. Shayanne Ost, 23, from Balzac was charged with outstanding warrants, possession of stolen property including stolen mail, possession of break-in tools, possession of drugs and failing to comply with conditions. Oost is now in jail and will appear in Rimbey Provincial Court on March 4.
Achtemichuk was released with the condition she will appear in Rimbey Provincial Court April 1. Rimbey RCMP are on the look out for culprits who attempted to steal a truck at Frontline Compression Service on 44th Street on the night of Feb. 22. The culprits were unsuccessful and drove through a fence to get away. That same night unknown individuals broke into Nikirk’s yard in an attempt to steal a vehicle, but were also unsuccessful. Rimbey RCMP is encouraging anyone with any information on these or other crimes or impaired drivers to contact them or call Crime Stoppers Tips Line at 1-800-222-8477.

Municipal funding cut for counselling service BY TREENA MIELKE The services of a family counsellor in Rimbey are in danger of being discontinued unless more funding can be obtained. At a Community Wellness Group meeting held recently, members learned the town had chopped funding for the program.
The program began in 2014 and since that time council has contributed $5,000 annually. However, this year during the budgeting process, council agreed to discontinue the funding. The Community Wellness Group, who identified the need for the service several years ago, is looking for other options as they believe the counselling
service is very much needed in the community. “We’re looking into other funding options or other ways of funding the program so there is no interruption of service,” said Leanne Evans, facilitator of Community Wellness Group. Committee members agreed the service needs to continue if at all possible.
“I feel very strongly that we need her here,” said committee member Helen Coers. “I think she could be a full time person,” added Annette Peck. However, Coun. Brian Godlongton said council had decided to increase funding to FCSS and cut the funding for the counselling service. “I was not in favour,” he said.
16024OS0
However, he noted that providing funding for the counselling service would mean taxes could increase by another mill rate. The Catholic Social Services counsellor comes to Rimbey once a week and her services have been very well utilized. Funding had previously been supplied by the town, FCSS and Victim Services.
Citizen driven crime prevention programs on the horizon BY TREENA MIELKE Town council plans to initiate a citizens on patrol program and has earmarked $5,000 to get it off the ground. “It is one of the higher priorities on our plate right now,” said Coun. Brian Godlongton. There is enough interest in town to make it fly and the funding is in place, so it’s just a matter of getting if off the ground.” Const. Carman Dutz said such a group would be beneficial to the town. “COP is a group of concerned citizens who basically take ownership of their community. They are volunteers who watch for suspicious activities. Such a program is more eyes and ears with the same intent to report criminal or suspicious behaviour.” Dutz said he has suggested to interim CAO Donna Tona that individuals could receive feedback and training from the Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol. “It is a well established healthy group that’s growing,” he said. The possibility of another group with a focus on community safety was discussed last week at an Community Wellness Committee meeting. Committee member Helen Coers said a group called ‘Abundant Communities’ is being investigated. “It is more like Neighbourhood Watch,” she said. “It is citizen driven and there is no finances involved. It isn’t going to cost the community.” Dutz said such a group which promotes being neighbourly and community awareness is helpful in reducing crime. it seemed liked it would make a lot of sense and bring people together.

TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2016
Musician, writer and adventurer coming to the Beatty House SUBMITTED Another Home Routes concert to be held on Thurs., March 3, brings multi-instrumentalist, multi-award winning artist Ian Tamblyn to Rimbey. Ian Tamblyn has written over 1,500 songs, released 38 albums of his own work, and has produced music for dozens of other well-known artists. He is passionate about Canada – its history, its natural environments, its people and their stories - and that passion has been the well from which many of his works – musical and written – have been pulled. Last year he worked with the Art Gallery of Sudbury to create the album Walking in the Footsteps, created to express the paintings of the Group of Seven: “15 songs steeped in the rocky soul of Northern Ontario. Lush and lyrical, it’s fitting that a group of songs about painters and painting would paint such a beautiful musical picture itself (Penguin Eggs, Les Siemieniuk). With a career spanning more than thirty years, Tamblyn has moved beyond the “singer-songwriter genre by
recording albums featuring the sounds of nature as the prime component of the instrumentation. Ian has received a number of awards and nominations. In 2012, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society for his guiding and creative work in the Canadian Arctic. He has been awarded the Estelle Klein and Helen Verger Awards for his contributions to Canadian folk music, an honourary doctorate from Lakehead University, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Trent
University, and was voted English Songwriter of the Year in 2010 by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, to name just a few accolades. He’s contributed as a mentor and teacher and activist for many years, and has recently worked as Writer-in-Residence at Carleton University, teaching songwriting and composition to fourth year music students. Tamblyn continues to invest in composing and performing music while he works as a guide on Lake Superior and with

RIMBEY REVIEW 11
Highlights from Feb. 22 council meeting BY TREENA MIELKE • At its Feb. 22 meeting, council tabled a new revised NDP plan until its March 7 meeting as the mayor was absent. The new municipal development plan has been revised to direct future growth and was developed
through consultation with administration, local developers and builders and town council. • The resignation of Jackie Stratton and Gayle Rondeel from the Rimbey Business Sector Sustainability Advisory Committee means additional members are needed.
Advertisements will be placed. • The Rimbey elementary school approved the donation of the main auditorium in the Peter Lougheed Community Centre for the Rimbey elementary school Christmas concert for Dec. 13, 14 and 15. • Council approved $500 to
go towards the Canalta Rimbey Renegades Peewee A hockey team for their provincial tournament. • Council agreed to remain part of Red Deer River Watershed Alliance, although not all of council agreed it would be a good idea. “I don’t see how much
benefit it is to the town,” said Coun. Jack Webb, who voted against the decision. “It gives us a message how we can improve. I think it’s an important thing to maintain our membership,” said Coun. Paul Payson. • Reuben Giebelhaus, who attended the council
meeting said he didn’t understand why he couldn’t drop off varnished wood at the recycle depot in Rimbey, but was told to take it to Bluffton. Council explained the Bluffton facility was equipped to deal with such items as varnished wood.

JESSIE CLARE KINLEY Jessie Clare Burns was born in Homeglen, Alberta, to Robert William Amos Burns and Gertrude May (Stelfox) on November 27, 1931 and passed peacefully on February 23, 2016 at Foothills Hospital, Calgary. She attended school in Homeglen, Ponoka, Lacombe and Edmonton (University of Alberta). While a schoolteacher in Wolfville, she met Fred Kinley, who she married on December 22, 1955. Four cherished children and a hardware store followed. Their retirement from Kinley’s of Berwyn brought them to an unspoiled property in the foothills near Bentley and pets: Highland cattle, cats, deer, chickadees and Jackie the dog. Jessie was a woman ahead of her time in her commitment to conserve our resources and preserve Alberta’s natural environment. Those who knew her well will remember her voice, her ability to connect with young children, and love of and stewardship of the great outdoors. Jessie was pre-deceased by her parents, siblings Jim, Jack, Mary and Betty, and husband of almost 60 years, Fred (2015). She will live on in the hearts of children Marigold (Bob) of Edmonton, Myron of Bentley, Carillon of Vancouver and Trevor (Nancy) of Invermere and grandchildren Graham (Marianne) and Megan of Invermere, along with sisters in law Evie, Viola, Martha, Madalene, Louise and Zunny, and brothers in law Bob “Smitty” Smith and John Kinley, plus many beloved nieces and nephews. We will be thinking of her as she walks through the wildflowers identifying birdcalls, or, perhaps, sings to Fred as he relaxes with a newspaper. The family thanks Dr. Bal and the staff of Foothills Hospital, Calgary, for their professional care of Mom and support of the family before she passed peacefully, two days after a stroke. The memorial service was held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 3 pm at Bentley United Church. Jessie will join Fred at Fairview Cemetery in Lacombe in the springtime.Condolences may be made by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca WILSON’S FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM serving Central Alberta with locations in Lacombe and Rimbey in charge of arrangements. Developer approaches council for bylaw change BY TREENA MIELKE A Rimbey developer who wants the town to change three lots from medium density to low density and eliminate a back alley on his property will have to go through the proper channels to make that happen. Stan Cummings met with council on Feb. 22 to request council to change the zoning of the lots so there will be no need for a back alley. “I don’t want to wait three or four months,” he said. “Putting in a back alley serves no purpose,” he added. Town planner Liz Armitage reminded council any decision they made during the council meeting would not be binding. “A change in a bylaw requires a first reading, public hearing and second and third reading. Even if doesn’t do the actual land use designation and
applies to have that clause removed, he will still have to go through the process.” Council agreed to accept the request as information and bring it forward to next council meeting on March 7 if an application is made. A gentleman from the gallery at the council meeting said he didn’t think the lots, which are located in proximity to the proposed seniors’ complex, would work as low density. “There will be a lot of cars and a lot of people and where are they going to park? He said council shouldn’t amend a bylaw just to suit one developer. However, Armitage said such questions and comments can be discussed at a public hearing. “I think back alleys are very valuable and very necessary,” added Helen Coers, who was also in the gallery.
