KRISTI DOBSON Coulson Aviation is the new owner of the Salvation Army building on Redford Street. Wayne Coulson confirmed the sale in an e-mail on Friday but declined to comment further. “Once we take possession we will be able to discuss,” Coulson wrote. The sale was finalized by realtor Dave Koszegi. The Salvation Army announced in February that the organization will be moving to the Libberock building on Argyle Street. Lt. Michelle Cale said she has not been in discussion with Coulson and does not know a specific timeline for the purchase. Although none of the parties involved would confirm possession dates, Cale said she is confident the Salvation Army will have adequate time for the move. “We are in good shape to accomplish the move in a fair amount of time without too much pressure,” she said. “We anticipate to be fully up and running by the summer.”

he gym at Alberni Elementary School was full of enthusiastic French Immersion students clapping and dancing along to the French-speaking band, Réveillons, during a celebration for the Quebec Winter “Carnaval” last week. The up-beat atmosphere and engagement from the students could be construed as signs that the French Immersion program at School District 70 is going strong. French Immersion offers an opportunity for students to become bilingual and receive a double-Dogwood Graduation Certificate at the end of Grade 12. Early French Immersion in the Alberni Valley begins for students in kindergarten and goes to Grade 7 at École Alberni Elementary, and then Grades 8–12 at Alberni District Secondary School. Late Immersion students begin in Grade 6 and 7 at École Alberni Elementary and go on to
Grade 8 at ADSS and join early French Immersion students in Grade 9. “There is not a single other comparable and comprehensive school second- language program in this country,” said Marc Fryer, vice principal at École Alberni Elementary and district coordinator for Frenchlanguage programs.
This is an opportunity to learn a second language while at school. – Marc Fryer “This is an opportunity to thoroughly learn a second language while at school.” Fryer said most other Vancouver Island districts have lotteries and waitlists for new French Immersion registrations and not everyone is accepted. Program poised to break grad record in 2017 “However, in SD70, we have been able to offer unfettered access to both early and late French Immersion,” Fryer said. “Both programs are viable options for families looking for second language acquisition for their children.” According to an SD70 newsletter, late French Immersion is designed for students whose first language is not French. All subjects are taught in French and students meet the same learning outcomes as they would in an English-speaking class. Students who make good candidates for late French Immersion are motivated, proficient in numeracy and literacy in their Grade 5 class, willing to take risks and have a sincere desire

Jean Contant teaches French Immersion at Alberni District Secondary School for Grades 9–12. He said the program began close to 35 years ago because a group of
parents in the Alberni Valley wanted to see French being taught in SD70 schools. “Next year will be the 25th group of graduates who get a bilingual diploma,” Contant said. “Next
year is a big year for us and we should have our largest graduated class of bilingual grads, about 25 kids.” Contant said there are many reasons why kids join French
Immersion and that over the years enrolment numbers fluctuate but have been more steady since late Immersion was added six years ago. “With late Immersion kids who are doing well in school, parents want to offer another opportunity, a challenge, so learning a second language at that point is worth it for them,” he said. Contant said he hasn’t noticed any loss of skills from French Immersion students once they reach high school, when Frenchlanguage classes go from full-time to about half-time, and that having a second language is beneficial for student career opportunities. “It always adds another layer for [students’] applications when
they say they’re bilingual,” Contant said. “We have some kids who have applied for some government jobs with the RCMP... even though it’s not a requirement to get in, it helps their application.” Contant said approximately half a dozen teachers in Port Alberni, who are graduates of the French Immersion program, are now teaching French Immersion in the Valley. He said some graduates have gone on to teach French Immersion in other places in B.C. and even Quebec. Online ‘farm market’ aims to connect producers with buyers SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
A transplanted Alberni Valley family is bringing their urban farm from the gate to the Internet in the hopes of connecting producers and buyers of agricultural products. Rick Jorgenson and his daughter Talia, his partner Jane Oliver and Talia’s partner Josiah Gadsby are ViewStreetMarket. ca, and they went live with their website on March 1.
“The feedback has been wonderful,” Rick Jorgenson said. “People have been read for this for a while,” Talia said. The quartet work well together: Rick is the sales and marketing manager, Jane looks after branding and accounts, Talia is the customer service and events manager and Josiah takes care of growing food for their market as well as the distribution centre. The hope is that everyone from

The Alberni Valley has a thriving agricultural community and farmers’ markets, and View Street Market should be viewed as an enhancement, not competition, Rick said. City adds new beach
YPAV installs tsunami pillar
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
The City of Port Alberni will have a new beach on the Alberni Inlet as of March 23. The city has finally purchased what is locally known as “Esso Beach”, between the Harbour Quay Marina and the boat launch behind Harbour Quay. The city paid Imperial Oil $209,000 for the property, equal to its BC Assessment value. The money came from the land sale reserve fund. The city had been leasing the land for $1 a year from Esso,

The piece, constructed out of three slabs of McLean Mill cedar with designs wood burned onto it by local artist Shayne Lloyd, will commemorate the 1964 tsunami. The Good Friday tsunami claimed no victims but destroyed property and cars and ultimately was a factor in the amalgamation of the two Albernis in 1967. The tsunami pillar was a collaborative project between the Young Professionals, McLean Mill, Canadian Alberni Engineering, the Rotary Club of Port Alberni Arrowsmith, the City of Port Alberni Local Government and Shayne Lloyd.

and built a staircase leading down to the small beach so people could better access it. Mayor Mike Ruttan said that the city isn’t yet willing to talk about their long-term plans for the site but plan to beautify it in the short term. “The first plan is to clean it up and essentially make it look like it belongs to the rest of that area,” said Ruttan. “We do have some longer plans moving forward that will take a bit of money but what we can do right now that is relatively inexpensive is we can
take down the existing fence, put up a railing, do something with the beach to make it more beach-like—add in some gravel that may have been dredged up t out of China Creek.” When the city a leased the land in n 2014, it was still t classified as a D brownfield site due to contamination from f its former life as a r fuel depot. Former city director of Parks s and Recreation Scott Kenny said at the t time that the area had w potential, because the boat ramp could a be improved and t amenities added. a

$249,500 winning bid by K&G Installations. The extra costs were incurred due to forced relocation of a Fortis BC gas line and extra work on the bridge underside. “The existing substructure itself is sound but there isn’t enough strength or capacity in the substructure to make the road really wide— we’re widening the road a little bit,” Cicon told city council in December. “That will accommodate cycling lanes on each side but pedestrians we’re guiding down to the new foot bridge that we put in just upstream last year. We’ve got an interesting combination there.” The foot bridge was installed in 2014 at a
cost of $152,000. Widening the vehicle bridge will involve both surface and substructure work, city streets superintendent Wilf Taekema said in October. “The existing sidewalks that are on there—and they’re raised above the roadway—those will be removed,” said Taekema. hey’ll be replaced with “pre-cast concrete deck supported by girders underneath.” “A four-foot concrete guard rail will separate the bicycle path from the vehicles,” added
Taekema. A steel fence will separate the outside of the bike lane from the river below. The bike lane will be 1.9 metres as per provincial regulations; that opposed to the current 1.5 metre sidewalk. The work done on the bridge will also encompass the bridge’s underside. “There’s quite a bit of woodwork and steel work that has to be done,” Taekema said. Cicon said that any work identified outside of the original contract would result in increased costs for the city.

The minimum improvement value needed to qualify for that is $100,000. “It really came down to painting the store front or putting a new canopy on it or putting new windows in, putting in a new door... something that will change the look of it, catch the attention of people from the sidewalk or the road,” said Deakin. A facade improvement bylaw could be “a stop gap” for improvements that didn’t meet the commercial tax revitalization bylaw criteria, said city planner Scott Smith. Other municipalities have adopted similar bylaws successfully, he added, generally via matching funds. Deakin suggested an annual budget of $10,000-25,000 for the program but was challenged by Coun. Sharie Minions who felt it was insufficient. “I think this is
something we could get a lot of uptake on and really see a drastic difference... but my thought was that $25,000 was low,” said Minions. “I’d like to see a good difference so that people could actually feel the difference. My thought was $50,000.” Minions added that for the first year of the program, she would like to see it target key areas. “I’d like to see it specific to main streets like lower Johnston, lower Argyle and Third Avenue so that we’re getting the biggest effect.” Deakin added that
SHARIE MINIONS some communities were even more specific and chose to focus on corner properties for the biggest impact. Coun. Ron Paulson suggested that the program be firstcome first-serve and provide up to $5,000 in matching funds but Mayor Mike Ruttan suggested that be left up to the discretion of Deakin and Smith. “The advantage of a first-come [system] is that you get the applications coming in right away,” said Deakin. Staff will prepare a program for council to review. reporter@albenivalleynews.com

Drivers will have to continue to detour around the Gertrude Street bridge for another three weeks, as the bridge will remain closed. The bridge widening construction, which has been on the City of Port Alberni’s list of projects since they fall, has been delayed months. “It’s being delayed because of delays in concrete panel fabrication,” said city engineer Guy Cicon. Unforeseen design details and the weather are the other two factors behind the delays, he added. The bridge was originally supposed to stay partially open for during construction but Cicon said that it was both safer and faster if the bridge was fully closed. “Part of the original concept was that the bridge would be partially open during construction but it’s much safer for the public and the contractor to have it closed,” said Cicon. The vehicle bridge over Kitsuksis Creek and walkway is being widened to allow for bike lanes on either side of the bridge. The work is being done at a cost $347,000—up from the original

KATYA SLEPIAN Flooding on lower Third Avenue should be a thing of the past after the city completes an extra storm drainage outlet in the area. The city has contracted out the work to Bowerman Excavating at a cost of $400,000. Crews were out in heavy rain on Tuesday working on the outlet, diverting traffic on lower Third Avenue for a time in the morning. “It’s a continuation of the Dry Creek project,” said City of Port Alberni engineering tech Boyd Wong. The budget for the Dry Creek flood mitigation project was $2.7 million and including the storm outfall being constructed now, $2.3 million has been spent. “What we’re trying to achieve there is to install another storm outfall to help alleviate the flooding that we get in that area, in front of Deja Vu Books. seem to have issues with water sitting in that area when we have heavy rains.” Approximately a foot of standing water pooled near Bute Street during the heavy rains in December 2015. While according to city engineer Guy Cicon, the flood mitigation work on Dry Creek addressed the flooding caused by the creek, it didn’t address issues with the city’s aging storm drain network. “When we reached 5 millimetres per hour (of rain), the rainfall exceeded the capacity of the underground
drainage system,” Cicon said at the time. Precipitation reached that rate for four or five hours during the afternoon and early evening of Dec. 5. Wong said that an extra storm outfall will be the shortterm measure to stop flooding on Third Avenue. “This will be a way of helping alleviate the immediate problems in the area and then eventually it’s designed to continue up Bute Street,” said Wong. Currently, the new outfall will only collect storm water up to the Bute Street and Fourth Avenue
intersection. Wong said that while the system used to be able to handle the rains, the city’s one outfall in the area is insufficient now. “Right now, for that lower Fourth Avenue area north of Dry Creek there’s only one storm outfall that goes through the Husky gas station property and that obviously can’t handle all the extra water,” he said. “It seems like the rain is more intense now. It was designed at one time and it worked fine but for whatever reason now it just can’t seem to handle the intensity of rain.”

Multiple water main leaks along Sixth Avenue have spurred the City of Port Alberni to replace the aging main, said waterworks charge hand Amar Giri. “We’re replacing a eight-inch asbestos cement water main [that’s] probably from the early 1970s with PVC C900,” said Giri. Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC pipe is heavyduty plastic polymer. “One of the main reasons for replacing this one is that we’ve had several breaks in it over the years.” The stretch of water main between Roger Street and Wallace Street serves businesses that can’t go without water, he explained. “We have some very important businesses on this line—like the dialysis centre, the health centre, a dentist’s office—so whenever there was a break we had to fix it right away and 99 per cent of the time it was in the middle of the night.” The city has opted to use PVC pipe instead of ductile iron to save on costs. “The ductile iron
John Stephen covers up a water main access on Sixth Avenue on Tuesday, March 1.
is more money and harder to work with,” said Giri. “We will use ductile if we don’t have enough coverage on top of the line— we usually like to see about a metre coverage (of dirt) on the line with PVC.” Replacing the water main on a block like this is challenging, Giri said, because several other lines run underground in the area. “The main challenges on this block is that everything is underground. We have the underground Telus, we have the fiber-optic [cables],
gas, hydro and we had to cross the highpressure gas main and working under the hydro wires... it was a challenge getting around it.” The main work of laying the pipe has been completed, Giri said. “This week we’ll be pressure testing, chlorinating and then a lab sample will be sent. Once that comes clear we’ll be doing a tie-in to the old main on Roger Street and then switching services over and then doing the final tie-in on Wallace Street.” The work should be completed in the beginning of April.

Are you a fan of comedy? How about fantasy/mystery? Or even mild horror? All of those are great on their own, but when rolled into one, they become a darkly funny tale that’s impossible to put down. While it may seem that such a book doesn’t exist, I assure you it does in the form of the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy. Set in Ireland, the action kicks off in Skulduggery Pleasant (sometimes titled The Scepter of the Ancients) when twelve-year-old Stephanie Edgley attends the will reading of her recently deceased novelist uncle. She is joined by her parents, her annoying aunt and uncle, and a mysterious man in a frizzy wig and trench coat. In an unexpected turn of events, Stephanie inherits her uncle’s estate. But what she doesn’t know, is that she’s inherited a lot more than just a house. And there are many people who will do anything to get it, including trying to kill young Stephanie. Luckily, she’s saved by the mysterious man from the reading. A one Skulduggery Pleasant, ace detective, sarcasm expert, sharp dresser and 400 year old sorcerer. Oh, and did I mention? This book is one of my absolute favorites, and I’m a little sad that so few people seem to have heard of it. Derek Landy’s writing is an underappreciated treasure trove of witty comebacks and devious plotlines! However, I must mention that the series does have more mature content as it continues, so it’s more appropriate for readers 13+. Intense fight scenes are offset by often silly one-liners, and a healthy amount of not taking itself too seriously keeps otherwise dark themes light.

An urban search and rescue team will visit the Valley for an exercise as well. Watch for more information on this exercise in the coming weeks. And think about whether you’re truly prepared.

To the Editor,
We would like to publicly acknowledge and thank a number of groups and individuals for the support they gave to the ADSS Life Skills student during the exam week of Jan. 25–29. They made such an immense difference in the educational program of our students. A big thank you goes out to the members of Port Alberni City Council for supplying bus passes that allowed our students to gain the experience

and skills needed to use the city public transit system. We had such a great time getting out of the school and exploring our city. And thank you to the bus drivers we encountered on our travels. They were wonderful. They were always so kind, friendly and helpful. Kudos to the Alberni Bulldogs hockey players, who took time out of their busy schedules to come and skate with our students. Their act of kindness made such a difference. The students had such a wonderful time skating with the
players and it is a memory that will stay with them. A special thanks to the managers at Quality Foods for giving us a behindthe-scenes tour of the store. The students enjoyed seeing all the different departments that make up a grocery store. And thanks for all those cookies. They were delicious. These guys are indeed awesome. Keeping up the land pressure To the Editor,
Sierra Club activist
editor@albernivalleynews.com Mark Worthing (Letters, AV News, Jan. 20) is critical of a Tom Fletcher column against the environmentalist agitation to save more of BC old growth forest (three hectares in the Walbran valley). Worthing’s sarcasm seeks to decry Fletcher’s column. He asserts the majority of BCers support saving forests for a better life and future jobs. BC has the toughest regulations for forest management yet Worthing promotes distrust and demands more oversight of the harvesting. This is how the resource economy
is impeded: by spreading distrust, making counter claims of management violations, and demanding greater oversight based on science. Much of environmental activism science is based on data collection that is supportive only of the groomed hypothesis. Assertions are made of planetary disaster and clarion calls for aggressive expensive correction. Conclusive proof of the premise of science will not be realized for decades. Bruce E. ‘Provincial patchwork’ the least desirable of policies for doctor-assisted suicide in B.C. Cont’d from page A8
(Meanwhile, the term “right to life” is all but banned from university campuses, to minimize the risk of a coarse literal interpretation that it means, you know, a right to life.) A Liberaldominated
committee of MPs and senators has recommended full-throttle implementation, not restricted to terminal illness and including mental conditions such as depression and dementia. The majority suggested even “mature minors” should
have this new right. The politicians support allowing doctors to opt out of cases they won’t condone, as long as they provide a referral to another doctor. In Belgium, one of the pioneers of this brave new world, most of the growing number
of euthanasia patients have had cancer. But as The New Yorker magazine reported in a ground-breaking article last summer, others have been euthanized because of autism, anorexia, partial paralysis, blindness with deafness, manicdepression and
yes, chronic fatigue syndrome. B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake expressed the hope that Canada ends up with a consistent policy on doctor-assisted suicide, rather than a provincial patchwork. The closest Lake came to politically
incorrect criticism was to caution that “deep discussion” is needed around the court’s notion of a “competent minor,” someone not yet entrusted with the vote or access to a liquor store. Three dissenting Conservative MPs went so far
as to say the recommendations don’t adequately protect seniors who might be coerced into checking out and passing on their estates. How old-fashioned. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @ tomfletcherbc

A few days last week the sun shone so brightly that thoughts of Spring and getting outside perked up our spirits. Then the cold rain came down and our spirits flagged. But take a look outside everything is beginning to look a lot greener - spring flowers are peeking through the soil. As we continue to the end of the season of Lent it is a wonderful time to remember that God wants us to celebrate life as we go along. Even the disciples had to clarify their vision and confirm their insights. They had walked many a long road. Now was the time to celebrate how far they had come. Don’t we all need to sit back at times and celebrate where we are? Enjoy both what we have earned in life and the gifts we have been given. So on those rainy days in our lives, get out those rain coats and boots and celebrate the life God has given us. For God has promised us a rainbow - and we can rejoice in that.

Ruttan said there is a one in three chance for a damaging crustal earthquake to hit Vancouver Island within the next 50 years and that it is important to be prepared for evacuation. He added that a personal emergency kit doesn’t need to take long and that some people may already have items at home that can be added to a container, like flashlights, clothes, food, water and batteries.

The Alberni Valley Childcare Society will be acquiring a new bus for its Stepping Stones Programs before the end of its large fundraising campaign. Program administrator Julie Spencer said children will be riding to and from school in style by the beginning of March. When the bus was subjected to a mechanical failure last spring, it only received a temporary repair at the cost of $43,000. That was when board members decided to start a fundraising initiative for a new school bus. The ball started rolling with donations from the summer’s Charity Golf Classic, the Society’s annual Halloween Spooktacular and in-house chocolate sales. The final push is the current raffle, with the top prize being a large playhouse built by students of the VAST woodworking program. “To date, we have raised approximately $53,000 and if we sell out of raffle tickets, that will be an additional $15,000,” Spencer said.
A playhouse built by the VAST woodworking class is the top prize in the Alberni Valley Childcare Society bus raffle.
The bus is expected to cost between $70,000 to $80,000. When the Society acquired the 24-passenger micro school bus 15 years ago, it was purchased new, but has experienced too much wear and tear to continue. The new one will be the same size, but will be modernized with new features, including an automatic door opener. Between the three different site locations for before and afterschool care, just over 50 students depend on the bus for transportation. “When parents work in the morning, they can bring their child to the centre and we will bring them to

school on time and pick them up after,” Spencer said. “We also transfer between centres because some kids attend Alberni Elementary but go to daycare at Hilton, so we will pick them up at school.” From a program enhancement perspective, Spencer said the bus will add to the children’s daycare experience. The bus is used for local fieldtrips but the new one will allow groups to visit places further afield, including the Parksville beach, Little Qualicum Falls and the Nanaimo wave pool. “We can go to places as simple as the neighbourhood park, but in the summer,
some kids are not getting the classic summer vacation so we can enhance their experience,” Spencer said. “It broadens their learning experience.” Spencer hopes all raffle tickets will be sold by the cut off on May 20. Only 3,000 are available and can be purchased for $5 each at any of the Alberni Valley Childcare Society locations, through parents of the centre or on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Quality Foods. The second prize is a $500 gift card for Quality Foods and the third is a Wheels on the Bus quilt made by AVCCS board members. The draw takes place on May 25.

Bulldogs squeak into BCHL playoffs SUSAN QUINN KARLY BLATS / ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
The AV Bulldogs celebrate after a goal at Saturday night’s game against Powell River.
It took them 58 games to do it, but the Alberni Valley Bulldogs claimed the last playoff spot in the B.C. Hockey League Island Division with a pair of wins over Powell RIver Kings on the weekend. Coupled with a Victoria Grizzlies’ loss on Friday, the wins gave the Bulldogs 54 points on the regular season—two more

than the Grizzlies. The Bulldogs will face first-place Nanaimo Clippers in the first round of the BCHL playoffs beginning this Friday, March 4 in Nanaimo. “I don’t think it’s
a surprise to us,” Bulldogs’ coach Kevin Willison said. “We’ve been playing some pretty good hockey. It’s a matter of finishing games and that we can play with anybody.” The Bulldogs pulled out the points they needed on their final road trip of the season, Willison said, and even though one of the wins against Powell River was in overtime, it was still
a win. “It’s unfortunate it took us 58 games. I give these guys a lot of credit for hanging in there and believing in the coaching staff.” The Bulldogs have a mix of players with playoff experience and those who are new to the post-season. Willison will look to players like team captain Eric Margo or Chris Schutz to
motivate the playoff rookies. “Those guys are going to communicate with these kids some of the experiences they had last year from the seven-game series in Nanaimo. It’s no different than sneaking in the back door to the playoffs.” Playoff tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 3. editor@albernivalleynews.com

individual results that propelled the young ADSS team to their third place finish. Final individual results were: Aaron Badovinac (2nd 70kg), Ravi Manhas (3rd 41kg), Isaac McDonald (3rd 54kg), Kyla McAuley (3rd HWT), Morgan Dagenais (5th 57kg), Kiarra Fong (5th 54kg), Seth Price (5th 45kg), Trevor Barker (5th 48kg), Kylea Anderson (6th 90kg) and Owen Spencer (6th 51kg). “Our wrestlers should be really proud of what they accomplished this
weekend,” coach Chris Bodnar said. “Little Bado (Aaron Badovinac) wrestled really well. He pinned all three of his opponents to get into the gold medal final. In the final he came up against Brookswood’s Trevor Weltzin. Weltzin has been undefeated all year and is a returning national and provincial medallist. “Aaron gave it his all but in the end Weltzin showed why he has been undefeated all season. He was voted as the Most Outstanding Wrestler

of the tournament.” Bronze medallists Ravi Manhas, Isaac McDonald, and Kyla McAuley all had great tournaments, losing only one close match respectively. “Ravi is a two-time bronze medallist at the BCs. He showed a lot of grit wrestling on the consolation side after a disappointing semi-final loss,” noted ADSS coach Russ Bodnar. “He was wrestling well in the semi-final but was a little too aggressive and got caught in a throw. I am proud of the fact

he battled back once again.” Isaac McDonald garnered a lot of praise from opposing coaches for his performance in the 54-kilogram division at the BCs.
Our wrestlers should really be proud of what they accomplished this weekend. – Chris Bodnar “A bronze medal is certainly nothing to shake your head at but it doesn’t necessarily reflect just how good Isaac wrestled,” coach James Messenger said. “His conditioning is so good and he
wrestled very well tactically. In the quarterfinal he knocked off the third ranked wrestler. In the semi-final I think he out wrestled his opponent, a Grade 12 and multiple BC medallist, but just couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities he created.” Grade 9 athlete Kyla McAuley “wrestled the tournament of her life,” ADSS coach Jeannette Badovinac said. “She beat a girl who she has lost to three or four times this season. In fact she beat the gold medallist in the preliminaries but due to the tie breaking criteria in her division finished with the bronze,” Badovinac said.

The Armada finished behind Saint Thomas Moore of Burnaby and Pinetree of Coquitlam. There were 109 schools represented at this year’s BC High School Championships. In addition to the combined team standings the Armada boys team finished fifth in their division. “The most promising thing about our results this weekend is every single one of our wrestlers returns to ADSS next year,” head coach John McDonald said following the competition. “We brought 21 wrestlers and 10 of them finished in the top six. Six more wrestlers were only one match away from placing. other words, it is not sudden death). Powell River scored about halfway through the first overtime period. The Athletics pushed back and played as hard as they could, leaving everything on the field. At the end of overtime, Powell River’s lone goal stood and the host team won 1–0. “It was a great team effort overall,” team spokesperson Shaun Rust said. “Considering that all of Powell River’s players were born in 2002, while the Athletics have players from 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, they played extremely well.”
On Feb. 21 the Athletics played a game against Oceanside’s U15 team in Qualicum Beach. Again, despite being badly outsized due to age difference, the Athletics held their own, only losing 1-0. “It was an exciting game to end the regular season,” Rust said. On March 6, the Athletics will participate in a jamboree at the ADSS turf from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring many of the teams they have played this season. The public is encouraged to come out on March 6 and watch some good soccer.

The Alberni Athletics U14 soccer team travelled to Powell River on Feb. 14 to play a provincial qualifying game, and delivered a nailbiter. The girls came out strong and withstood an early attack by Powell River. From midway through the first half, all the way to the end of regulation time, it was an even game, with only a couple of scoring chances for either side. Being a playoff game, extra time was required to break the tie. Playoff rules dictate that the teams play two, 10-minute halves, regardless of who might score (in

Women’s Day takes centrestage KARLY BLATS / ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
A
n encore presentation of the Vagina Monologues is coming to the Italian Hall on Saturday, March 5 for International Women’s Day. This is the fourth year Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues has been brought to Port Alberni. The last production was on Feb. 20 at Char’s Landing that Gwynne Hunt, artistic director with Art Matters Society, said was a great success. “There was 101 people there including the actors... it was a really good audience and a really good show,” Hunt said. Saturday’s show is part of a whole day celebration for International Women’s Day. Performances begin at 7 p.m. with a 40-minute introduction before the Vagina Monologues. Opening the show is Kat Wahamaa, a West Coast Music Award nominated, singersongwriter from Mission, B.C., who will sing Wise Women, that Hunt describes as sort of an anthem for the production. Next is a rant written by 17-year-old Ruby
Cast members from the Vagina Monologues get together with producer Gwynne Hunt, lower left corner, for a rehearsal prior to Saturday’s show.
Hunt called Rape Culture. Hunt and Lauren Bader, also 17, are part of a group called Just Us Girls and will perform the rant together. Finally, a new play called Breast Friends, that discusses the importance of body image, will be performed by 10 cast members from the Vagina Monologues before the main show. This will be Hunt’s 20th production of the Vagina Monologues—she used to produce the show in Abbotsford, where she lived before relocating to Port Alberni—one
that she said is going to be interesting. “We have a dozen women coming from the Mainland to perform in roles that they’ve done before and joining our local cast of a dozen women,” Hunt said. “It’s going to be quite an interesting production and very lively, I can guarantee that.” Hunt said none of the local cast members have met those joining from the Mainland but have graciously stepped back and are okay with watching the visiting women perform their parts.
This is an important play to bring to Port Alberni, or anywhere, said Hunt, because it raises awareness about rape culture, how women are perceived and how women perceive themselves. Generally from the audience “there’s a lot of crying and a huge amount of laughter,” Hunt said, and that the Vagina Monologues is an “interesting piece that is a worldwide phenomenon.” Performing the monologue Hair and a transgender piece in Saturday’s Vagina Monologues is Port
Alberni’s Ange Brown. This will be Brown’s third time being a member of the cast and said she first saw Ensler’s play when she was 16 years old with her mom. “[The play] was enough to stay in my mind for all those years and then when I saw the audition, I thought, that’s scary but I have to at least try that,” Brown said. Brown said the last show was a lot of fun and brought out a large audience. “I don’t think people can come and not be moved,” she said. “[The play] is powerful, so I hope it draws conversation... or it stays with them for a while.” Aside from the
be bought at Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society (ACAWS) on Third Avenue, the Main Artery at the Harbour Quay or at the Italian Hall on Saturday. Hunt said because of leftover money raised by Art Matters Society last year, it is possible to put on a full day of events for International Women’s Day. “Everyone is welcome,” Hunt Said. “We hope that men come, they can take the belly dancing if they want, its not exclusive to only women. Our audiences are usually 50–50.” karly.blats @albernivalleynews.com
