Gender-neutral wording a focus
A City councillor wants more inclusive phrasing.
ASHLEY WADHWANI
ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
One Maple Ridge City councillor has made it her next goal to make the community more gender inclusive, and is asking her fellow council members to remove gendered language in city documents. Councillor Kiersten Duncan gave her first notice of motion to council on Tuesday, Feb. 23, and told The TIMES that she’s
excited to see what she hopes will be a positive change for Maple Ridge. “I think this is a huge step,” she said. In October 1990, the province of B.C. replaced the title of “aldermen” with the term “councillor.” In the same vein of removing gendered references in the workplace, Duncan is proposing to similarly remove the gendered language of “he / his,” and “she / her,” from city documents moving forward. This issue, the councillor explained, has been something she’s brought up at council meetings in the past, and said that council

council has discussed replacing “him” and “her” with “them” or “their,” nothing has been set in stone with exactly what reference will replace the pronouns. “I’ll leave that up to staff,” she continued. Duncan hopes that the council agrees with her on March 8, when they meet, vote, and debate her motion for gender neutral language. “We want to show that we don’t want to have gendered language that makes people feel that they can’t run for council or be included in conversations,” she said.

Maple Ridge pair spared extradition to India
Concerns over torture behind court decision.
A brother and sister from Maple Ridge won’t be extradited to India. The B.C. Appeal Court overturned an extradition order against Malkit Sidhu and Surjit Badesha, over concerns they will be tortured. A B.C. Supreme Court judge had ordered the surrender of Sidhu and Badesha to police in India in
May 2014, believing there was enough evidence for them to face trial for the murder of Jassi Sidhu. Sidhu and Badesha were arrested in 2012 and charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the June 2000 slaying in India of the 25-year-old victim. In March 2012, prosecutor Deborah Strachan, acting on behalf of the state of India, argued the mom and uncle had targeted Jassi Sidhu and Mithu Singh Sidhu – the young man she

the end of the year. Strachan told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Mark McEwan that Jassi told friends and co-workers she feared she’d be killed if her family learned of the marriage. Badesha and Malkit Sidhu travelled to India and told Punjab police that Jassi had been abducted at gunpoint and forced to marry Mithu, Strachan said. The two accused told Mithu to forget about his marriage and have it nullified. “They threatened Mithu’s mother and

During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. A Maple Ridge man has pleaded guilty to shooting another man dead in a mall parking lot. Edward Marke Antonsen, 32, entered the plea Monday in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster to a charge of manslaughter with a firearm. He was initially charged with second-degree murder. Shortly after 8 p.m. on April 29, 2013, 26-yearold Claude Gille DeGuire was shot in the parking lot of Thrifty Foods at Haney Place Mall in Maple Ridge. DeGuire was airlifted to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. Police said at the time that the shooting was drug related. Antonsen was arrested at his home four days after the incident. During the brief appearance on Monday defence lawyer Troy Anderson told the court that Crown and defence agreed to a resolution in the case last week. Monday was scheduled to be the first day of Antonsen’s trial. Justice Gregory Bowden read the amended charge to Antonsen and asked how he pleaded, to which Antonsen replied, “Um, guilty.” The mandatory minimum sentence for manslaughter with a firearm is four years in prison. Sentencing has been scheduled for March 16. – Jennifer Saltman is a reporter with The Province

Disabled citizens poorly served by government
T
he most recent increase to the government’s disability allowance was touted as if the provincial government was passing out gold bars. In fact, the province was merely boosting the monthly amount by $77. For many people living in this province, that will be less than a month’s rent if the year’s worth of increase is combined. It’s a single trip to the grocery store. Then the province decided to compound its stinginess by yanking back some of the money. If you get a government-funded bus pas, you only get $25 a month. And depending on your transportation method, it can be as low as $11 a month. These allowances are intended for people who, by definition, may have great difficulty finding work, and an even greater challenge finding housing. Transportation is astonishingly difficult. For those with physical disabilities, a cracked sidewalk or poorly built crosswalk can be insurmountable obstacles. And transit, while better than a generation ago, does not provide anything like full mobility, especially with the death by a thousand cuts being inflicted on HandyDart, through a failure to increase service levels over the past few years. Most government assistance in B.C. can barely keep an individual or family out of abject poverty. It keeps people from starving or freezing, and that’s about it. It is supplemented by a variety of non-governmental programs, including food banks and Meals on Wheels. Without countless volunteers and the aid of scrambling non-profit groups, things would be dire indeed. Clawing back a meagre increase, as the cost of living heads ever upward across our province, shows that the B.C. Liberals do not value all citizens equally.

That’s right, I felt homeless dear readers, for I have written – by my estimation – more than 1,000 columns since the early 1980s. Clarity provided about CareCard mixup Dear Editor, We were sorry to read that Mr. Rutherford and his wife were left confused when recently applying for a B.C. Services Card [Cautionary tale: keep your CareCard, Feb. 25 Letters, The TIMES]. The B.C. Services Card was launched by the provincial government back in 2013 and replaces the CareCard. Each customer has the choice to either combine it with their B.C. driver’s licence or have a standalone card. The card was designed with many benefits in mind, including enhanced convenience and
improved patient safety. When a customer qualifies for a Services Card, we do ask the customer to surrender their current CareCard with a guarantee it will be securely destroyed. The reason we do this is because the CardCard is no longer needed as the customer will be given an interim B.C. Services Card document which will display their personal health number (the same number which would have appeared on their CareCard). If a customer really does not wish to surrender their CareCard, we would advise
them to securely destroy it themselves. It is unfortunate Mr. Rutherford was incorrectly advised when he made calls to non-ICBC services that his wife would need to retain her old CareCard and pay for services until her new card arrives – this is completely, 100 per cent incorrect. If anyone has questions about the new B.C. Services Card, they can attend any of ourdriver licensing offices or call us at 1-800-663-3051. The mother and uncle of a woman murdered in 2000 won’t be extradited to India, over concerns they will be tortured. Readers react: “#justiceforjassi this is a dishonor to our justice system. She was a beautiful person with a vibrant soul. I keep praying that she will get the peace she deserves.” – Catrena Kilthau “So our justice system is saying it’s alright to pay to do a hit on someone in another country. As long as you have lots of money.” – Robert Wallace “So sad I went to high school with her” – Daryl Leidenius “Once again our Mickey Mouse justice system sends the wrong message. This is disgusting at best.” – Sylvain Fortin “Too bad... that’s what they deserve.” – Laurie Young Fancy “Too bad if they will be tortured... they didn’t give Jassi a chance to live her life!” – Lisa Mueller Hiemstra

also gone back on their election promise to cancel the contract for F-35s, expensive and unsuitable for anything but bombing Third-world countries, and are continuing to pay an annual deposit to participate in the program. As for our military mission with the Iraqi Kurds, despite Liberal denials, it is a combat mission, and its goal seems to be to help dismember Iraq by promoting Kurdish independence. Last month, Human Rights Watch censured our friends the Kurdish military for its policy of destroying Arab villages as part
of an ethnic cleansing program, which is a war crime. When will the Liberals address that? At the UN, Canada’s image of being the most abject toady to the U.S. is continuing. Since the Liberals came to power, Canada has been one of less than a handful of countries which has sided with the U.S. in voting against UN resolutions to discourage the glorification of Nazism, and to guarantee Palestinians in occupied territories the use of their own natural resources, including water. Hospital staff wonderful Dear Editor, I was recently in Ridge Meadows Hospital for six days – first in Emergency with heart attacklike symptoms. Within two hours, I’d had four tests and was found to have low potassium, instead. Later, follow up tests showed I was okay. The staff was wonderful, efficient, professional, and kind. We are all so lucky to have wonderful hospitals and a superior medical system. L. Melanson, Maple Ridge

Trump poses threat Dear Editor, Is Mr. Mowatt [Americans tired of ‘political correctness, Feb. 11 Letters, The TIMES] suggesting the Berlin Wall was actually instigated by the East Berliners who tried to escape in droves? And the orders from the Kremlin were only incidental? His revisionist history certainly fits nicely in the Trump-ette crowd. In this case, anyway, it is Trump who is calling for walls, and posing a humanitarian threat to American Muslims and others. Tread carefully on that new path that the Trump Carnival would build, lest it take us all through the House of Horrors. Bob Groeneveld, Langley

Readers Choice Awards honour best:
Late last year, TIMES readers were invited to vote for their favourite local businesses in more than 100 different categories. After thousands of ballots were cast and calculated, there were several companies that stood out. Last Thursday, the special pull-out section in the newspaper, as well as the reception, were all about recognizing these accomplishments in the local business community. There were many acknowledged for the first time, and others recipients who were back again, such as Lisa Blaine of Warm Hearth Heating.
Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy operators were so tickled to receive the award again
Jeff Weaver, a young ReMax Lifestyles realtor out of Pitt Meadows, couldn’t be more elated with the coveted recognition. “There’s a lot of realtors out there, so it’s pretty awesome that I’d be considered,” he said. “It’s so cool. Actually, it’s absolutely amazing that I won.”

Life-long artist preps for first show Tidal pull begins March 5 to April 23 at The ACT. ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
Maple Ridge painter Jane Duford Johnston was overwhelmed when she was invited to be featured – for the first time – in Tidal Pull, beginning on March 5 at The ACT Art Gallery. When gallery curator Barbara Duncan asked the local painter if she’d take part
in the show, she didn’t have words. “In my head I thought [that] I don’t believe this is happening,” the painter said. “But if I don’t do it now when will I ever do it?” Tidal Pull is the painter’s first in-depth feature in an art gallery. The exhibit will have about 15 of her oil paintings on display, alongside ceramic artist Laurie Rolland – all depicting the theme of oceans and shorelines. Music was James “Buddy” Rogers’ way of supporting a little girl with cancer and her family. The Juno-nominated musician from Maple Ridge organized and hosted a fundraising concert at Cascades Casino on Feb. 21, in support of five-year-old Kira Short and her family. Kira has a malignant tumour on her spine which is inoperable. After three months of treatment, the family will check to see if Kira’s cancer is responding to chemotherapy in Vancouver. If it is, treatment will continue for another three months, up to 42 weeks total. If it’s not, Kira and her family (including mom Rayanne, dad Peter, and two-year-old sister Jayden) will fly to Boston for two-and-a-half months of proton radiation therapy. Kira is doing well, however the family did have a scare on Valentine’s Day, Peter shared. “We ended up in emergency, she had a temperature of 103,” Peter said, “but now she’s fine.” The dad told The TIMES that the concert was excellent. “The turnout wasn’t as good as we had hoped but the show was amazing,” he said. The lineup for “Blues Aide” – with all proceeds going to the Short family – included Rogers, Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues, and Arsen Shomakhov. “It was good,” said Rogers, who estimated the event raised between $4,000 and $5,000 for the family. “We didn’t quite sell the event out, because having it on a Sunday makes it a little more challenging. All in all, it raised more [money] for the family doing a non-sold out show on a Sunday than a sold-out show on a Friday or a Saturday.” Rogers said the concert was a way for Kira’s parents and extended family to enjoy a night out. >More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Kira’

Open house held for Albion An information night was held at Samuel Robertson Technical. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Albion residents and others got a first-hand look at the results of a workshop, and online community survey, surrounding a potential new community centre and school this past Thursday, Feb 25. An open house was held and jointly hosted by the City and the school board at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary. On-hand were city and

200 people that went online and did the survey about what kind of spaces they would like to see overall in the project,” said Wendy McCormick, director of recreation with the City of Maple Ridge. So where are things at now? “The school board has to apply to the province for provincial funding to build a school,” said McCormick. The open house was part of a process in which the school has to go out to the community, “and the community says this is what we’d like to see, and the application for the new school has to be in by the end of March,” she added.

A Maple Ridge athlete had hopes of winning gold in at least one speed skating event at the BC Winter Games last weekend (Feb. 25 to 28). During the three-day competition in Penticton, Marshal Shupe earned a spot on the podium a total of five times – three of which were for first place. “I think it was one of my best meets ever,” the 15-year-old said. Leading up to the games, he added, his goal was to beat his record from the previous winter games, two years ago in Mission, where the skater earned one silver and two bronze medals. This year, “my goal was to get that gold medal, so I worked really hard and trained really hard,” he said. Over the weekend, the 15-year-old medaled in all of the events he competed in except for one, earning silver and bronze medals in two other events (finishing second in the 3000 metre race, and third in the 500 metre competition). Fellow teammate Timothy Song also took home two silver medals in two 500 metre events.

“We have good attitude to each other,” Shupe said about the duo’s relationship both during practices and in competition. “We both worked really hard.” Shupe’s high scores and quick times also earned him a spot on the Zone 3 relay team for the U16 3000 metre race. “I was super relieved,” he recalled feeling when he was told the good news. “I was pretty much guaranteed a gold medal at that point.” The Zone 3 team celebrated first place – and Shupe’s third gold medal – with a
time of 3:14.320. His positive attitude and confidence played pivotal roles in his overall impressive results, Shupe told The TIMES. With a positive attitude “you feel better about yourself and you have more faith in yourself,” he said. Off the ice, Shupe’s most memorable moment was during the opening ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 25, where athletes, coaches, and supervisors from each zone walked into the stadium together – Zone 3 looking like a sea of baby blue.

Other Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows athletes who medaled in the winter games included wheelchair basketball athlete Colin Huppee, whose team took home gold medals. On the mat, Isaiah Ingram earned silver in advanced kumite (karate), and was also named captain of the Zone 3 karate team, his dad said. In archery, Mikaela Francis earned silver (in match play recurve and aggregate recurve), and fellow Maple Ridge athlete Jesse Hubbard earned bronze in the boys aggregate recurve. Pitt Meadows curler Al Kersey represented Zone 5 and earned silver in the female competition. In badminton, nine Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows athletes made up the 10-person team, which placed fifth overall. Local badminton athletes included Claire O’Neil, Emily Styba, Sienna Skucas, Allen Huang, Stephan Wang, Anvith Thudi, Taric Saunders, Shahil Narayan, and Brianna Dorothy Stockli.

Led by Libby McDonnell’s and Marquosis Haintzs’ silver-medal performances, Maple Ridge Secondary’s girls wrestling team placed fourth at the B.C. high school championships last weekend in Abbotsford. On the boys side, senior grappler Cam Hicks took silver.
The Fraser Valley Boat and Sportsman’s show takes place in Abbotsford this weekend, and TIMES columnist Jeff Weltz can’t wait to go.
Ridge Meadows Burrards U15 girls field lacrosse team took bronze in Coquitlam, during the provincial tournament at the end of February. A total of 10 teams took part in the tournament. They took the third-place finish, after losing to New Westminster, and then defeating Nanaimo and Coquitlam.

“There was a lot of people there,” he recalled. “It felt like a mini-Olympics walking into the opening ceremony, and each zone came in together.” Shupe is now back in Maple Ridge, winding down from a busy and exciting weekend, feeling “really good knowing that all of the work came out and I reached my goal,” he added.

Outlaws erase 3-0 series deficit, stun Flames Ridge Meadows’ season is over. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com
Troy Landreville/TIMES
It’s a toss-up as to what’s more shocking – the underdog Ridge Meadows Flames jumping out to a 3-0 series lead against the Mission City Outlaws, or the Outlaws winning the next four to take the best-of-seven opening round playoff match-up. Yep, that just happened. The Flames were decided underdogs – they finished fourth in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Harold Brittain Conference stand-
ings, 21 points back of the first-place Outlaws, and had lost five times to the Outlaws during the regular season. But they stunned the Outlaws by beating them Feb. 16, 17, and 19, and had Mission City on the ropes, on the verge of elimination. Cue the comeback – the Outlaws won back-to-back games in overtime by identical 3-2 scores on Feb. 20 and 23, evened the series at three wins apiece with a 3-0 shutout victory this past Friday at Planet Ice, and finished off the Flames on Saturday by beating them 4-1 at the Mission Leisure Centre. Flames head coach Bayne Ryshak credited the Outlaws
for staving off elimination on four occasions. “Mission started to play some good stingy ‘D’ and they played a very disciplined, desperate game the rest of the way,” Ryshak noted (in fact, the Outlaws allowed just five goals against over the final four games of the series, after surrendering 15 during the first three games). Ryshak was proud of the way his team battled Saturday, in a winner-takeall showdown. “The goals they got weren’t anything special, just good hard working goals,” he said, of the Outlaws. “I was very impressed and
proud with how the guys competed. It was a great experience for our young guys. Hopefully the ones that return come back motivated.” For the graduating Flames, Ryshak said, “I’m sorry we couldn’t get it done for them but I’m honoured that I got to coach all of them the last three years. They’re all tremendous young men with bright futures.” Bradley Crompton led the Flames in playoff scoring with five goals and 11 points in seven games, followed by Boston Colley (1g, 9a) and Andrew Strelezki (5g, 3a). > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Flames’
