Pulse survey could net you a $1,000 gift card How many businesses out there wish they had a crystal ball to find out just what products and services people in the region are in need of? For that matter, how many customers have gone shopping only to discover that the product or service they require is just not here? Lastly, could you use a $1,000 gift card from Save On Foods? Until recently, those kinds of questions were left up to the experience and intuition of a business owner (not the gift card question though, everyone wants one of those!) Now however, there is a tool that pinpoints what services people use and what products they are most apt to buy in the next 12 months. That tool is the Pulse Survey. “The pulse survey is unique in the way that no one else can provide this kind of detailed information on who is going to buy and what they are going to purchase in the next 12 months. No other media outlet

can provide this level of information,” said Zena Williams, Kootenay News Advertiser publisher. “We encourage participation. It’s a very valuable tool for businesses to make sure they are bringing in the products or investing in services that people want to buy.” The survey, which can be accessed on the web at www.pulseresearch. com/kootenays, is a little lengthy, clocking in at an average of 40 minutes to complete, but its depth is pretty astounding. There are questions about news readership, food, arts and entertainment, family activities, sports, education, finan-
cial services, health— the list goes on. The reason for the amount of questions is simple – it’s about providing the best information to local businesses about what people are truly interested in. It’s a win for the business and a win for the consumer. After finishing the survey, you will be asked to provide your contact information (name and phone number) for a chance to win a great prize. Entering is completely optional. The official rules and regulations may be accessed at the bottom of every page of the survey, at any time. Two lucky winners will get to take
home a $1,000 SaveOn-Foods Gift Card! Please note that Pulse Research will provide the name and telephone number of the prize winner to Black Press for the sole purpose of dispersing the prizes. In no way will the contact information provided
be linked to any survey responses. Again, that link is www.pulseresearch. com/kootenays. Spend a little time, help yourself, help the community and you could walk away with a $1,000 gift card.

Views Letter: Hidden taxes and broken promises It’s been five years since Christy Clark became premier. For those who aren’t the premier’s friends or allies, it’s been a very long five years. Five years of rising fees and rising taxes. Five years of ballooning debt. And five years of broken promises. That’s on top of the decade of Liberal government that came before – making it a total of 15 long years of paying more, but getting less.
Today, it’s clear that Premier Clark is out of ideas. Our province has a lot to be proud of. But British Columbians face challenges every day, and that’s where government comes in. It’s the job of the premier to be there for everyone, not just top income earners or political friends. Life in this province is tough, and it’s getting tougher. The premier said she would fix the
unfair medical services tax, but British Columbians will pay more in MSP this year than ever before, and another hike is already scheduled for next year. Hydro rates, ICBC rates, ferry fares - even camping fees are on the rise as this government reaches into the pockets of British Columbians again and again. The only people who can catch a break from this government are millionaires, who are getting a billion-dollar tax break over four years. Premier Clark’s LNG promises - remember
those 100,000 jobs? have fallen flat with not a single project built, and despite her promise to make B.C. debtfree, the province’s debt is growing faster and higher than ever. So when I see the premier spending her time proclaiming the first Wednesday in March Red Tape Reduction Day, it tells me that she is not just out of ideas, she’s out of touch. I dislike red tape as much as the next guy, but surely to goodness the premier has something better to do than stage a day of entirely manufactured photo
ops. Surely addressing the heartless way her government has treated people living with disabilities in its recent budget - by increasing their benefits, only to take away that money again by hiking the cost of their bus passes - is a higher priority. Surely she should be taking real action on affordability in the Lower Mainland, or addressing elevated lead levels in Prince Rupert schools, or addressing one of the myriad priorities across this province, before taking the day off to promote her party’s message.
Then again, this isn’t the first time this premier has chosen to put photo ops before people. Remember Om the Bridge? Last year, the premier wanted to shut down the Burrard Bridge to host a yoga photo op. Only after the province’s collective outrage at the idea she would do something so self-serving – and do it on National Aboriginal Day at that – was she forced to cancel it. Just this week, my New Democrat colleagues discovered that the premier was prepared to spend
$100,000 of your money on her yoga photo op - a plan that included nearly $25,000 for mobile transmission facilities so that she could broadcast her photo op to a province-wide audience. It’s a plan that speaks volumes about the premier and her priorities. Premier Clark has had five years to figure out what matters to British Columbians. The fact that she still thinks it’s photo ops and politics just shows she’s never going to get it. ~John Horgan Leader of the New Democrats

Kootenay refugee groups praised in parliament by MP The Cranbrook Hub for Refugees (CHR) was praised on the floor of Parliament last week along with several other Kootenay groups working to bring Syrian refugee families to Canada. Kootenay Columbia MP Wayne Stetski told the House he was proud of the efforts being made in the Kootenays to provide new homes for refugee families in the Kootenays and earned an enthusiastic parliamentary round of applause for his efforts. Stetski began by saying, “I rise in the House today to recognize the hard work of the constituents of Kootenay–Columbia who are organizing to bring Syrian refugees to Canada. Across my riding, we are blessed to have many groups of dedicated citizens working toward this important goal . . .” The Kootenay-Columbia MP then listed nine Kootenay Volunteer groups currently working to bring Syrian refugees here including CHR, the Catholic Refugee Group and the Baptist Group of Friends all located in Cranbrook as well as the Kimberley Refugee Resettlement Group, the Creston Refugee Committee, the Kalso Refugee Committee, the Nelson Friends of Refugees, the Kootenay Refugee Committee and the Cathedral Refugee Committee, all located in Nelson. He later added another group, Kootenay Cares for Refugees, a local grass roots group of friends after finding out they brought a Syrian family of four to Cranbrook Feb. 19 after originally trying to sponsor a family from Burma. “My sincere thank you
to everyone involved in this important initiative. It is a clear demonstration of the generosity of spirit that is so widely held in Kootenay-Columbia! I look forward to personally meeting many of our new citizens - having them here will enrich our lives and our communities,” Stetski said. CHR co chairman Gerry Warner said it was gratifying to hear this kind of support coming from one of our local politicians. “Sponsoring refugees is a monumental effort and we welcome MP Stetski’s support. This is an extremely challenging project and we need all the support we can get.” Warner said CHR
has now raised close to $32,000, just $8,000 short of its budgeted $40,000 to support a refugee family of four. But many of the families coming over are larger than four and more money be needed. he said. “And we’re only budgeting to support them at social assistance levels so it would be nice if we could raise more than we’ve budgeted,” he said. Kootenay Anglican Diocese Refugee Coordinator Elizabeth Huether said since Jan. 21 no new refugee families have been available for the Kootenay groups that hold private sponsorship agreements in partnership with Citizenship and Immigra-
Meeting of the Board
tion Canada (CIC). However, Huether said she expects this situation will change after March 9 when a new list of families needing sponsorships will become available. “Some families have already been referred for settlement and there will be more. It’s a day to day thing and we just have to be patient and wait our turn. There will always be more families.” Meanwhile close to a dozen CHR volunteer settlement teams are doing everything they can to prepare for the refugees. Local skier competes in the Youth Olympic Games in Norway
Zoe Chore was one of 1,100 young athletes, 54 from Canada, aged of 15 to 18 and from 70 nations who competed in the 2016 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lillehammer, Norway. The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) are sporting events for young people, where sport meets culture and education including learning about Olympic values. It also the first time the young athletes appear on the world stage. Thousands of spectators came to see the up and coming athletes. The press, including the YOG youth reporters, covered all events. When athletes were not competing, they were attend workshops focusing on Olympism, skills development, well-being, social lifestyle and a healthy lifestyle among other topics. By collaborating with each other in the workshops they also learned from each other about across borders, cultures, languages and sport disciplines. Chore says, “I met so many new friends, I know I will see again. I felt so proud to be from Canada and from the Koote-
nays. Most of the people didn’t know where that was but I think they will all know about skiing in Kimberley now.” The specially designed course was set up on a natural terrain with artificial features including turns, roller sections, jumps and banked turns. After the gates dropped, four competitors raced gates and features and fought for the line that will get them to the bottom first. Ski cross is not for everyone, racers must not only master the terrain and its features but be confident racing shoulder to shoulder with three other racers fighting for the same best line. You might be the best but if another skier bumps into you, you might lose precious time or worst crash and not finish on the podium, which make ski cross probably the most exciting and entertaining ski event to watch. In ski cross anything can happen! The ski cross event consist of qualification and finals (group heats, semifinals, the small final and the big final). In the qualification phase, competitors
take a timed run, and the top 16 ranked competitors go through to the finals. At this event they raced in a round robin format compared to the traditional elimination format. Competitors are divided into group heats of four competitors. All competitors eventually compete against each other and based upon the ranking of each heat are awarded points. After the group heats, the top eight ranked competitors advance to the semifinals. The top two ranked competitors from each semifinal advance to the big final, while the remaining competitors move to the small final. The Team Ski-Snowboard Cross (two women, two men, two skiers, two boarders) consists of finals only. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, big final and small final are divided into heats of up to four teams. The top two teams from each race advance to the next phase. Zoe Chore, who hasn’t looked back since her friend India Sherret introduced her to the sport two years ago, participated in both events. She was third in the Ladies’

Most of the other girls, despite where they come from, train in Europe all winter. I realized how much I value coming from Cranbrook where I have been able to be involved in other sports like soc-

Molly Miller receiving one of her two gold medals at the 2016 BC Winter Games. Kimberley cross country skier, Molly Miller was announced as the recipient of the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence at the Closing Ceremony of the 2016 BC Winter Games. Miller’s achievements in cross country skiing are unprecedented for an athlete of her age. She competed for Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games as a 13 year old in an under 23 category where many athletes were 10 years older than her. She was an integral part of Team BC’s relay and brought home a silver medal from those Games. At the 2015 Canadian Cross Country Championships she won two golds and two silvers against athletes two years older than her as well as the aggregate award for her age group. She has been identified by Cross Country Canada and as is a member of the National Junior B team and recently competed at the German National where she earned a bronze medal. Miller actually qualified for the National Junior A team but was still too
young to compete at that level. “I was so surprised when I realized that I was being recognized with this award at the Closing Ceremony,” said Miller. “I am very thankful for this support as I am going to Sweden for a training camp so this will be a huge help.” Miller not only has achieved in sport, she has also demonstrated on a daily basis what it means to be a leader within her sport, school, and community. She is an active member of the “Free the Children Club” at her school raising awareness about poverty locally and internationally and has initiated fundraising efforts to support families in Kenya and Nepal. Miller was also one of 17 athletes presented a Coast Capital Savings Athlete Bursary Award at the 2014 BC Winter Games for her exemplary leadership activities. Currently a grade 9 student at Selkirk Secondary School in Kimberley, she maintains an A average and has an interest in pursuing
