Overdose deaths on the rise BARRY COULTER
An increase in the number of overdose deaths is accompanying an increase in availability and type of illicit drugs in southeast B.C. According to Interior Health and ANKORS (Aids Network Outreach & Support Society) recent BC Coroner statistics show there has been a gradual increase in opioid related overdose deaths over the last 24 months across B.C., including communities within Interior Health. In addition, community agencies continue to receive reports about individuals experiencing fatal and non-fatal overdoses. Dr. Trevor Corneil, Medical Health Officer for Interior Health said that with a general increase in the number of overdose deaths, related to illicit drugs, more than 80 per cent of them have an opioid involved or detected post mortem. The majority of overdose symptoms are being reported after using opioid drugs such as OxyContin and heroin. “The availability of drugs on the illicit market has been increasing.,” Dr. Corneil said in an interview with the Townsman. “The number of options and types of drugs within that market have been increasing, and we don’t have a lot of control over that.” Dr. Corneil said it is important to know there is not one particular
group being affected. We have those people with significant mental health issues and significant addiction problems who are dying, but we also have recreational users. People don’t realize that there are recreational injection drug users. Those people are at risk as well.” Every year, at least since 2008, has shown a gradual but steady increase in the number of overdose deaths. “In Interior Health in 2008, there 20 overdose deaths related to illicit drugs, and in 2015 there were 16,” Dr. Corneil said. “So every year it was more than the year before — basically a straight line heading up. “Into this year, we already have some preliminary numbers from January — they’re preliminary because the data is fluid in the sense that coroners are constantly adjusting or changing decisions that are made around the final cause of death. But the preliminary number for January is 15 overdose deaths for the region. It’s a trend, unless the February total was nine. I wouldn’t call it a spike yet, until we have a couple more months of data.” Information coming forward shows there is not one specific “bad batch” of drugs. The majority of overdose symptoms are being reported after using opioid drugs such as OxyContin and heroin.

THE SITUATION AT THE TRANSLOCATION: An immobilized deer is tended to Tuesday, March 1, in a vacant field near downtown Cranbrook. Members of the East Kootenay Urban Deer Translocation project are attaching data collection devices (an ear tag and radio collar), and monitoring the deer’s vital signs before shipping her out of town along with others in her herd.
A day of translocation BARRY COULTER
U
npleasant temperatures, stiff winds and snow would blow into Cranbrook later, but the morning of March 1 was as balmy a late winter day as you could hope for. In a vacant grassy lot near downtown Cranbrook, bounded by a fence on two sides, the street on another and Joseph Creek on the fourth, a herd of six deer laze about, munching on fresh hay. Another deer lies a short distance away, immobilized by the fence, while a half dozen humans cluster around it.
It’s Day 2 of the East Kootenay Urban Deer Translocation in Cranbrook, a trial project that has already taken place in Invermere and Kimberley. Six deer were removed from Cranbrook the day before, and the project is hoping for a similar number today. Twenty deer is the total number allowed by the permit. The immobilized deer on the ground has been knocked out by a dart fired from a dart gun. A couple of minutes after being hit, the deer gets drowsy, lies down and nods off while the rest of the herd continues to browse nonchalantly.
Members of the translocation team — biologists, veterinarians and volunteers — attach a radio collar to the recumbent ungulate, tag its ear and keep a close watch on its vital signs. Other members of the team stand in a semi-circular perimeter of some 25 metres — “border collies,” as one member puts it — to encourage the rest of the herd to stay put. But the herd remains complacent. The process of preparing the deer takes about five minutes, At one point, a neighbour wanders from the other side of the fence, and attempts to en-
gage in conversation, but he is shushed. Tranquility is key, the goal is to minimize stress on the animals, asleep or awake. The operation proceeds in silence. With the data collection devices attached, the team carefully enfolds the deer in a blanket and then carry the animal hammock style to the livestock trailer parked by the street, taking care to keep its head elevated and airway open. The rest of the herd watches idly as the team slips by with their bundle.

Both the men and women’s Avalanche volleyball teams were feted at the College of the Rockies on Thursday, as both were recognized for their accomplishments at the Pacwest provincial championships last weekend.
For the first time in college history, both teams qualified for the tournament, with the men finishing fourth and the women capturing their first-ever gold medal. The women, ranked sixth heading into the championship, steam-
rolled through the third and second-ranked teams to earn their berth into the final matchup against the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The Avs struggled early, dropping two sets to their opponents before roaring back and
winning the next two and the final tiebreaker. Adriel Goodman, Ari Benwell and Kelsey Thompson were recognized as players of the game in three matches. Kennedy Koop, Alexa Koshman were given tournament all-star honours and Thompson
was recognized with the tournament MVP award. For the men, Patrick Toze, Julio Lins and Zach Fedechko were recognized as players of the game in their three matches, while Alex Cassels was named to the tournament all-star

New pothole season comes to Cranbrook For the Townsman
Potholes have begun their annual spring appearance on the streets of Cranbrook and are sure to become a hot topic of discussion for residents. Potholes are weather related and can occur at any time of the year. They are normally formed following extreme weather, with the freezing and thawing of sub-surface water from rain or snow runoff that has infiltrated into the ground through surface cracks. The weakening of the pavement structure combined with heavy traffic loads eventually leads to the formation of potholes. The City deals with a large network of streets and Public Works has a fixed number of work
crews, equipment and other resources with which it can respond to and repair road defects. “When a pothole is reported to us, the repair work is scheduled and carried out accordingly,” says Public Works Director Joe McGowan. “In normal circumstances our crews can respond to pothole repairs in a timely manner. During extreme and unfavourable weather conditions when pothole problems are numerous and proper repair work cannot be carried out, only temporary repairs will be made until conditions improve.” To report potholes, please contact the City of Cranbrook Public Works Department at 250-489-0218.

Lilith Revisited — new life for Lilith Affair C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley’s long running By Women For Women variety show, Lilith Affair, was reborn this year, with new energy and a new generation leading the charge. Lilith Affair was organized for the past 15 years by the Steppin’ Out Dancers. The Steppin Out Dancers announced they would be retiring from Lilith after all those years in 2014. But there was a new dance group in town, and with a smooth transition the reins were handed to the Lady’s Leg Dancers to carry on the Lilith tradition. The Lady’s Leg Dancers include: Kylee Ablett, Lauren Rokosh, Emily Korven, Corissa Rees, Kelsey MacPherson, Jill Lehto, Hayley Cooper, Kim Hoffmann, Alex Ablett, Kylie Newton, Tessa Rokosh, and Elli Bamsey. “The group was formed in 2012 out of a desire to spend more time together,” said group member Emily Korven. “Half the group include Kimberley Dance Academy alumni and half are new to dance.” The Lady’s Leg Dancers named themselves after the famous strip of snow on Mount Bill Nye that takes until late spring to melt, but always in the shape of an ever-shrinking lady’s leg, The dancers performed at Lilith in 2012 and were invited back in 2014. Then came the suggestion that the Lady’s Leg Dancers take over. “The Steppin’ Out Dancers gently suggested they would love to see our group take over,” Korven said. “We were honoured, excited, and a few glasses of wine in, so we accepted and announced that we would be back with our own take on the Lilith Affair in 2016. That take was very successful. Lilith Revisited took place on February 25, 26 and 27 and was completely sold out. Once again the show featured an all women cast, all women audience and all women

From Page 1 What’s interesting is that we’re seeing it everywhere. Certainly the bigger cities are being impacted, but so are the smaller cities. Where this really a ‘never occurrence’ in Cranbrook Trail area, we’ve see anywhere between one and three every year for the past three years, and that is likely to increase.” There has been a lot of recent publicity concerning the painkiller Fentanyl, which has become a problem in terms of substance abuse. But Dr. Corneil says Fentanyl is “only one piece of the puzzle.” “We have seen an increase in fentanyl — fentanyl has flooded the market in the last five years. About a third of cases have fentanyl detected in the system post-mortem. But two thirds of the cases are not fentanyl related. If you pulled out all those cases, you would still see increasing trends that speaks to access and a market (market for illicit drugs) clearly … having some success. “Heroin is the same drug it always was. The
“But two thirds of the cases are not fentanyl related. If you pulled out all those cases, you would still see increasing trends that speaks to access and a market (market for illicit drugs) clearly … having some success. problem is that like fentanyl it’s an opiate, and opiates suppress the respiratory system in a very uncontrollable way. You have to be really knowledgeable as a user if you’re going to try and use it safely, or at least in a safer way. That’s why we speak a lot about education and knowledge awareness, testing, using smaller doses or hits before your usual amount so you know what you’re using. Interior Health has
several harm reduction programs to help users, including a Take Home Naloxone programtath trains participants to recognize and respond to an overdose situation, using a naloxone kit. Naloxone can reverse (stop) an opioid overdose – in the event of an overdose, naloxone restores breathing within 2-5 minutes of administration and offers the opportunity to save a life and reduce harm related to the overdose while waiting for help to arrive. “And of course access to treatment is essential, these are opportunities to get people into treatment when they’re ready, and I think that’s the direction we need to go,” Dr. Corneil said. The subject of safe injection sites, as exist in Vancouver, is likely to become a subject of discussion across the province, and perhaps a reality, Dr. Corneil said. “There’s been a lot of questions about safe consumption sites, or safe injection sites as they’re also know,” he said. “They’ve been shown to be very effec-

A Cranbrook youth has pleaded guilty to arson. Early on Nov. 11, 2015., the Cranbrook Fire Department responded to a fire at Laurie Middle School in Cranbrook. Cranbrook RCMP also attended the scene. Arson was suspected as the cause of the fire. An extensive investigation by the Cranbrook RCMP General Investigation Section led to the arrest of a 14-year-old male who was charged with arson. On Monday, Feb. 29, the youth pled guilty in Cranbrook Courts receiving a one year intensive support and supervision order. The Cranbrook RCMP would like to thank members of the public for helping ensure that this case came to a successful conclusion.

For the Townsman
On February 26, 2016 Cranbrook RCMP received several calls of an elderly male who was loitering near the 711 Store. Cst. Robert Notari spent considerable time looking for the male before he finally found him. The man had missed his medical transport back to Fernie and had no money for a hotel room. Cst Notari approached the Salvation Army and found him a bed for the night. For those of us old enough to remember the old radio show, “The Rest of the Story.” here’s how this one ends. See Page 5

A Cranbrook day of translocation Continued from page 1 The deer are being taken — “translocated” — to pre-selected mule deer winter range areas in the Rocky Mountain Trench. In Cranbrook’s case, the members of the urban herd are going to a spot on crown land on the east side of the Koocanusa Reservoir. The radio collars and ear tags will allow biologists and Wildlife officials to keep tabs on how the urban deer are making out in their new country home, how far they range, how they endure the elements, how they herd together, how they fare against predators. After all, this is a trial project, and the data will help determine how successful it is. In Cranbrook, one deer is already in the trailer as the team comes up with the other. The trailer can carry a half dozen animals, and the day before came off relatively smoothly. But here’s the trick: For the same reason the unconscious deer’s head must be kept elevated, the deer must be four square on its hooves whilst being transported. Otherwise,
it’s likely to regurgitate the contents of its rumen and die from asphyxiation. So, as each deer must be first immobilized, it must then be woken up with another drug. Inside the trailer, the awakened deer, though confused, tend to be fairly docile if there are two or more of them. But the first deer inside the trailer is made of stern stuff, and as the team opens the trailer gate and eases the second deer in, the first starts knocking and stamping about. Then, an escape! The deer bursts out of the trailer, right over the heads of the humans clustered around the back of the trailer. Full of vim, the deer, conspicuous by its new radio collar, bounds across the field back to the herd. Such unplanned occurrences are part of working with wildlife and the crew seeks to recapture the deer to recover the radio collar. Re-darting is attempted, but the reversal drugs used to revive the deer are strong enough to counter-act any ad-
Drugs seized RCMP
Another Sizable Drug Seizure by Crime Reduction Unit The Cranbrook/ Kimberley Crime Reduction Unit with help from Creston General Investigation Section, continues to make strides in keeping drugs off the streets of Cranbrook and Kimberley. On March 3rd 2016 at around 1030PM the Crime Reduction Unit, along with Police Dog Service and General Duty police officers conducted a stop of a vehicle travelling on the highway from Creston
BC. The car was stopped at Jim Smith Lake Road, and as a result of information received, a high risk take down of the vehicle was conducted. A 33 year old female resident of Cranbrook was driving the vehicle and was arrested. A 23 year old male was located in the trunk of the vehicle. At search of the vehicle located a substantial amount of cocaine. Cranbrook RCMP are requesting charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking against both occupants of the vehicle.
All in a day’s work From Page 4 Cst Notari, who was in between nightshift, went back to the Salvation Army in his personal vehicle few hours after the end of his shift picked up the gentleman and drove him back to his home in

ditional sedatives. Unable to safely handle the deer, a wildlife capture crew from Bighorn Helicopters volunteers its services to use a net gun to re-capture the deer. Later that afternoon, the deer was quickly restrained, had the darts and collar removed and was released after a couple minutes to continue its life in Cranbrook. “The unfortunate escape on Tuesday was part of our learning of the translocation process,” says project biologist Ian Adams of Cranbrook based Vast Resource Solutions. “Our crew assessed steps that led to the escape and we addressed how we transfer deer into the trailer.” A new day on Wednesday saw the improved procedures put in place and work effectively. “We started the day by capturing a doe and her young from last year,” says Adams. “That way we start off with two deer in the trailer and they were much calmer. An added benefit is that we move the family group — mom and fawn can stay together, which has been a priority for us from the start of the project.” The rest of Wednesday’s captures went smoothly and another trip was made to the release point. In total 12 deer are translocated from Cranbrook over the three days of capture work, within the target range of 10 to 15 individuals for each community that the project had hoped to move. All seven radio collars al-

Those data have already showed that the deer moved into the trailer when the first escaped on Tuesday has shown surprising movements. “We’ve seen a wide range of initial movement by translocated deer,” notes Adams. “Some have moved very little and stayed close to their release point.” The deer pictured being handled above and on Page 1 is not one of them. In the first night she crossed the ice-covered Koocanusa
Reservoir and headed up the Gold Creek area. In the first 24 hours she moved close to 20 km

The Laughing Christ: An Unfamiliar Image
I
RE V. YME WOENSDREGT
’ve attached one of my favourite images of Jesus to this column. Have you seen it before? Some of you may have seen it. It was drawn by artist Willis Wheatley in 1973 for the United Church of Canada, one of four sketches Wheatley drew. It was originally titled “Christ the Liberator”, but has widely become known as “The Laughing Christ.” This image was one of the very first in the whole history of Christian art which shows Jesus laughing. Look at other works of art depicting Jesus. I dare you to find even one that shows this kind of laugh. It’s not just a polite snicker or titter. It’s a full– throated belly laugh. Jesus throws his head back and lets ‘er rip. Early art tends to show Jesus with a serious look. His lips are usually turned down. Even in works of art showing joyful events, Jesus was depicted stoically, as a somber guy — you know, one of those serious religious dudes with straight laces and long faces. You could never imagine the Jesus of early icons and paintings to crack a joke or share a laugh. He was just a pious bore. Now, the Bible never explicitly says that Jesus laughed. It does say that Jesus wept — and we hold on to that notion tightly. We talk about Jesus as the Man of Sorrows, or other such titles which perpetuate the notion of a serious, humourless, pious Jesus. But you can hardly imagine that Jesus never laughed. He went to weddings and ended up making more wine when it ran out; he told stories; he played with children; people were attracted to him. You’ve got to think he wasn’t really a gloomy Gus. His parables also show us a man with a wicked sense of humour. Ever hear the one about a camel trying to squeeze through the eye of a needle? In fact, some people thought he was having too much fun and called him a drunkard and a glutton. Does this sound like someone who wasn’t en-
THE LAUGHING CHRIST, BY WILLIS WHEATLEY
joying life? “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh,” he says in Luke’s version of the Beatitudes. An image like this help us remember that Christians are called to show joy. “Rejoice in the Lord always,” says Paul. Always. Not just once in a while, and not necessarily just a quiet joy. Too often I hear people tell me that joy doesn’t necessarily mean you have to laugh, that joy can be expressed quietly and reverently. Really? Honestly? Oh come on now! When you do something that brings you joy, don’t you laugh? Don’t you smile? Don’t you radiate that joy so that other people catch it from you? I love this image. Part of the reason is that about 15 years ago, I became so depressed that I thought I would kill myself. I almost succeeded. Thankfully I didn’t. As I worked through the depression, I discovered that one of the things that had happened was that I had forgotten how to laugh. I started taking life much too seri-
ously. For me, laughing is a sign of health — good physical health, good emotional health and good spiritual health. When you laugh, you are saying that you look at reality as life–giving and nourishing. Granted, there are moments of pain and grief. There always will be. But laughing is a choice which says that despite the sorrow that comes our way, life is filled with wonder and beauty and grace. So I’m going to hold on to this image of the laughing Christ. Here is a man who loved life to the full, who was able to marvel at lilies and sparrows and see the love of God in those oh–so–very–ordinary things. Here is a man who drew people to him, and taught them to revel in the goodness of God in all of life. Along with an anonymous 10th century Irish writer, I will celebrate the joy of life with this prayer: I would like to have the men of Heaven In my own house: With vats of good cheer laid out for them. I would like to have the three Marys, Their fame is so great. I would like people From every corner of Heaven. I would like them to be cheerful In their drinking. I would like to have Jesus too Here amongst them.
I would like a great lake of beer For the King of Kings, I would like to be watching Heaven’s family Drinking it through all eternity.

JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

Jim Cameron “Captain Frank Armstrong bumped a lot of scenery … but he always got through.” Robert Randolph Bruce, Lt. Governor of B.C. 1926-31
On
the evening of Thursday, April 28, 1898, the citizens of Fort Steele gathered to mark the end of winter with the firing of sticks of dynamite, lively tunes from the Fort Steele Brass Band and general cheering and jubilation all around. Technically, the first day of spring came weeks earlier but for the townsfolk it wasn’t the calendar that marked the event. For them and many others along the Kootenay River the true solstice came when the first steamboat of the year hove into view, in this case the J.D. Farrell, carrying 16 tons of merchandise from Jennings, Montana. It took her 12 days to fight her way up the Kootenay River which, for Captain McCormack and his crew, wasn’t bad given the low water, sandbars, rocks and snags. The Farrell, built during the winter at Jennings, was the largest craft on the river at 126 feet stem to stern and a 26 foot beam. She was a shapely boat for the time and place, fitted as she was with elegant (all things considered) staterooms, bathrooms, a dining room all electrically illuminated, plus a searchlight enabling nighttime navigation. It was a long haul but once the water was high she and three or four other boats would do the trip in 24 hours each week. Before the railway came to the Kootenays, when a trip by wagon from the towns of Golden or Kalispell entailed a very arduous journey, travelling by boat was a luxury. Of course, it wasn’t necessarily the safest way to go — the J.D. Farrell made only eight trips before striking a rock and sinking, a fate that befell many of the vessels although generally no one was hurt and oftentimes the boat was back on the river in short order. The Farrell was not the first steamship on the river, mind you. Boats had been plying the waters since the “Annerly,” ran the river in 1893, bringing supplies to the North Star Landing upriver from Fort Steele and loading tons of ore for the return journey. The East Kootenay region forms the upper eastern edge of the Columbia River Basin, an area that includes southeastern B.C., most of Idaho,

The Duchess II, captained by Frank Armstrong, on the Columbia River. She was dismantled in 1901. Wiki Commons Oregon and Washington, western Montana and small portions of Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. The Kootenay River runs south from near Golden and then back north to drain into the Columbia River near Castlegar. The Columbia River runs north from Columbia Lake near Canal Flats and then south and west through the United States to Astoria, Oregon, pouring more water into the Pacific Ocean than any river in North or South America. The fact that the two rivers are only a mile or so apart at Columbia Lake spurred William Baillie-Grohman, in 1889, to undertake the construction of a canal at what is now known as Canal Flats: A man a plan, a canal, a failure. It was used but twice. Of the numerous riverboat pilots of the day along the Kootenay and Columbia, unarguably the best was Francis Patrick Armstrong. Born in Sorel, Quebec, to the Hon. James and Charlotte Armstrong, Frank first came to the area as part of a group of engineers under Major Albert Rogers, surveying the route that would become the Rogers Pass. Frank settled near Golden and took up farming for a time. During the winter of 1882-83 he strapped on his snowshoes and made an overland trip from Golden to
Joseph Prairie (now Cranbrook) to deliver the mail. Undoubtedly finding the journey somewhat taxing he soon began construction of a riverboat from salvaged lumber. The craft was 75 feet long, 17 feet wide and powered by 45 year-old engines salvaged from a ferry on the St. Lawrence River. “She’s a pretty crude steamship,” he stated when he launched her in the summer of 1886 along the Columbia River, a narrow, shallow, crooked route, dry in the autumn, frozen in the winter and fraught with obstacles. She sailed successfully and with great fanfare into Lake Windermere on her maiden voyage and continued to do for the next two years carrying settlers, livestock, food, merchandise and mail. When she sprang a leak and sank he built the Duchess II and the Marion, both much improved from his first effort, the latter of which drew only 18 inches of water when fully loaded. As Captain Armstrong pointed out, “the river’s bottom was often very close to the river’s top.” The steamers plied the Columbia, often stopping along the way to see to settler’s needs, deliver mail and load wood for the journey. Captain Armstrong built
and sailed numerous boats over the next 20 years. In 1915 he accepted a volunteer overseas commission by the British Government and, at age 56, undertook service as superintendent of all military vessels on the Tigris and Nile Rivers, at one point barely escaping with his life when his ship was torpedoed in the Mediterranean. Following the war he returned to the Kootenays as a member of the Department of Public Works. Thirty-four years after the Duchess made her initial run, he captained the steamer Nowitka from Golden, carrying material to construct a bridge at Briscoe which effectively closed the river to paddlewheel navigation. In October, 1922, he was struck by a broken cable on a wharf in Kaslo, suffering a broken hip and internal injury from which he never recovered. He died in Vancouver on January 26, 1923. Endnote: A more thorough discussion of the life and times of Frank Armstrong may be found in the B.C. Historical News, Vol. 28, No.2, 1995, written by his great- niece, the late Winnifred Weir. Frank was brother to J.F. Armstrong, local government agent for whom Cranbrook’s Armstrong (9th) Avenue is named.

To say Cale Fleury’s play has been strong of late might just be an understatement. “Outstanding performance,” were the first words to escape the mouth of Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce, when asked about the play of his sophomore defenceman following Wednesday’s 5-3 setback in Regina. The 6-foot-1, 192pound native of Calgary has come into his own during his second season with the Kootenay Ice and was involved in every facet of Wednesday’s game right from the first puck drop. After a video review and overnight deliberation, it was determined he scored his team’s first goal with a seeing-eye point shot that eluded Pats goaltender Tyler Brown. Late in the second period, Fleury’s intuitive play with the puck from the point once again led to a goal, this time a redirection courtesy affiliate Reed Morison. And that’s just what Fleury did on the scoresheet. What he does off the scoresheet is arguably more impressive, especially when you consider we’re talking about the play of a 17-year-old defenceman who isn’t eligible for the NHL Entry Draft until 2017. The Ice (10-48-6-0) will need all of that and more from Fleury come Friday night (6 p.m. Mountain) when they visit the Prince Albert Raiders (34-21-7-1) at the Art Hauser Centre. “We put a lot of responsibility on him midway through the year when we named him an assistant captain at a young age,” Pierce said. “There’s no question, as with any young player, he’s had his ups and downs. But his minutes are extremely significant, so the downs tend to really stand out. You can’t really hide or protect him because he’s such an important part of our team. “[Tuesday in Medicine Hat] he was real good. [Wednesday in Regina] he was out-

standing, We need contributions from our backend with the guys we’re missing up front. He was instrumental on [two goals] and he was good start to finish.” While Fleury has been impressive since September, his emergence perhaps became more noticeable to the average eye when he was named an alternate captain in mid-January following the trade of Luke Philp. “It’s huge, it’s nice we’re a young group and I can be a leader of that group moving forward,” Fleury said after being named part of his team’s leadership group. “I just try to lead by example, not try to do anything too much, keep it simple like coach says.” Spending most nights anchoring the second blue line pairing for Pierce, Fleury has become a steady, reliable presence at both ends of the rink and done exactly what he set out to do — lead by example. Offensively, he has shattered his rookie scoring totals. In 70 games played last season, Fleury amassed one goal and 13 points. In 53 games this season, he has already eclipsed those numbers by a long shot, having collected seven goals and 23 points. When he arrived at camp this fall, he carried with him a much more imposing physical presence and he’s used that to his advantage. Fans at Western Financial Place have probably lost count of the number of unsuspecting forwards Fleury
has rag-dolled to this point in the season. Defensively, Fleury is often matched up against opponents’ top units and more often than not, he has done well to keep skilled, veteran scorers to the perimeter and limit their grade ‘A’ opportunities. What more could be asked of a 17-year-old defenceman? With third-year veteran Troy Murray (neck/ throat) out due to injury, Fleury’s minutes have become more critical since the Ice embarked on a four-game road trip. Now with veteran centre Matt Alfaro (undisclosed) out of the lineup, along with big-bodied winger Austin Wellsby (undisclosed), Pierce is going to need even more from Fleury outside of his own end of the rink. “They’re a big, physical group and we haven’t seen them for a long time,” Pierce said of the Raiders. “They play well at home and they’re right in the thick of the battle. I expect everyone to be at their best.” There’s no question the Ice have already received great value from Fleury after selecting him 78th overall in the fourth round of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. The only question that remains is how much greater will the return get as the former Notre Dame Hound continues to mature? After visiting the Raiders, Fleury and the Ice wrap up a four-game trip when they take on the Saskatoon Blades (24-35-4-0) Saturday.

Border Bruins face Nitehawks in Neil Murdoch Division final Jim Bailey Trail Times
The Grand Forks Border Bruins pulled off a substantial upset in the first round of the KIJHL playoffs, ousting the second-seeded Castlegar Rebels in six games in the Neil Murdoch division semifinal. After splitting the first four games, the Bruins defeated the Rebels in Castlegar, 3-1, in Game 5, and returned home to clinch the series with a 6-1 drubbing Tuesday. The game was tied 1-1 through two periods on goals from Bruins forward Austin Dean and Rebels’ Jesse Reeds, but Grand Forks erupted for five goals in the final frame to put an exclamation point in what had been a close series prior to Game 6. Bryson Yee netted the winner less than five minutes into the third, converting a set up from
Garret Brisbois and Tyler Fyfe, and just 48 seconds later Shayne Pluto added an insurance marker to make it 3-1 Grand Forks. The result was not a complete surprise, as a rejuvenated Grand Forks team had beaten Castlegar in two of three of their matches in the last month of the season. After Garret Brisbois put the Bruins up 4-1 at 11:49, Castlegar lost their cool as Matthew Lambert instigated a fight with Ryland Smaha-Muir to give the Border Bruins a man advantage, and Logan Casavant would make them pay, scoring a power-play marker for the Bruins to put the game out of reach. Dean netted his fourth of the playoffs and second of the night into the empty net for the 6-1 victory. Anthony Galliart was solid in net for the Bru-
ins stopping 29 shots, while the Rebels Logan Sawka made 19 saves in the losing cause. The Border Bruins now take on a rested Beaver Valley Nitehawks team that swept the Nelson Leafs in four games. The Hawks won the season series against Grand Forks 4-3, but the Bruins have given the Hawks problems this season winning three in a row in November, all by 3-2 scores. Nitehawks coach Terry Jones said he would have liked to see the Bruins-Rebels series go seven games, but has no preference when it came to his opponent for the Neil Murdoch division championship. The Nitehawks open their series Friday night at the Hawks Nest against Grand Forks with the puck drop at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
At the conclusion of his team’s first-round victory over the Fernie Ghostriders, Kimberley Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks talked a lot about identity looking ahead to a second-round series with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. “We have to make certain that we come to grips with our identity and then take our identity into the series,” Bancks said. “I know what [the Thunder Cats’] identity is — they play with good skill and I think Columbia Valley found that out. You’ve got to be ready.” If it’s imperative for his team to come to grips with its own identity, what exactly is that? “That’s one of our problems right now,” Bancks said. “We’re a little confused with our identity. For a good part of the year, we were a good forechecking team, played the game with some good speed. “We need to get a little more speed in the lineup and get on the forecheck. Our identity should be to play the game with speed, be
disciplined and I thought we didn’t do that [against Fernie].” Despite not playing to their identity, the Nitros dispatched the Ghostriders in five games and with relative ease. Now, the Dynamiters get an opportunity to rediscover that lost identity beginning Saturday night (7 p.m.) when the puck drops on Game 1 of the Eddie Mountain Division final with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. Using their own identity, the Thunder Cats swept the Columbia Valley Rockies in a four-game first-round triumph, outscoring the opponent by a decisive margin of 19-7. “I don’t think anybody’s being naive that it’s going to be an easy series,” Thunder Cats head coach and general manager Jeff Dubois told Brian Lawrence of the Creston Valley Advance. “At the same time, we did have some success against them on home ice. We can compete with them over a seven-game series.” Over an eight-game regular season series with the Thunder Cats, the Dynamiters were a
perfect 4-0-0 at the Kimberley Civic Centre. At Creston’s Johnny Bucyk Arena, the Nitros suffered three regulation losses. Over the entire 201516 KIJHL regular season, the Dynamiters only lost seven games in regulation. It’s safe to say Creston was not particularly friendly, accounting for 42.9 per cent of those. “They’ve got guys that can capitalize,” said Dynamiters forward Tanner Wit. “They’re not the most physical team in the league and we know that. That’s why we’re going to exploit that. But if you give them a chance, they will take it. They’ve got guys that can put the puck in the net. We’ve just got to watch out for that.” Though Wit and the Dynamiters finished the regular season atop the Eddie Mountain Division with a record of 417-0-4, the Thunder Cats were a not-too-distant second for the majority of the season, finishing 33-15-2-2. After eight regular-season meetings and five-game first round series in 2014-15, the Dynamiters and Thunder
Cats might not own the fiercest rivalry in the league, but it has certainly ramped up over the course of the past two seasons. “We’re such an allaround team and each and every one of us would sacrifice for anyone,” said Trevor Van Steinburg, the Dynamiters local jack of all trades, having spent time as a forward and defenceman during the first round against Fernie. “We have to take it one game at a time, one shift at a time. It’s not going to come easy so we need to just keep working.” With Bancks stressing the need for speed, the Nitros should get some help in that department as forward Austyn Moser is expected back in the lineup come Game 1. The rough-and-tumble native of Taber, Alta., played the first two games against Fernie before being sidelined with an undisclosed injury. Game 2 of the Eddie Mountain Division final is scheduled for Sunday (7 p.m.) at the Kimberley Civic Centre before the series shifts to Creston for Games 3 and 4.

Forwards Dynamiters Bancks listed Sawyer Hunt (6A) as arguably his best forward during a five-game triumph over the Ghostriders. Eric Buckley (3G, 3A) continues to produce and Korbyn Chabot (2-2-4) scored a big overtime winner against Fernie. Oh, don’t forget captain Jason Richter (1-3-4), Jared Marchi (2-1-3) and Keenan Haase (2-1-3).
suspension during which his absence was noticeable. Justin Meier (1-3-4) and George Bertoia (1-12) have been warriors, while Devon Langelaar (0-33) has taken on some additional minutes.
Thunder Cats Jackson Bruce-Fuoco (1-2-3) leads Creston from the backend, where Sebastian Kilcommons (1-3-4) was a catalyst during the first round. Maverick Lynes was a pain during the first-round meeting between these clubs in 2015 and he returns to do the same in 2016.
Thunder Cats Carson Cartwright (7-1-8) leads the conference in playoff scoring and Alec Wilkinson (1-5-6) has been a masterful setup man. Liam Plunkett (1-4-5) was a pest during the regular season series and Ian Desrosiers (0-2-2) brings an experienced presence.
Goal Dynamiters Tyson Brouwer (4-1, 1.36 GAA, .953 SP, two shutouts) was honoured as Eddie Mountain Division Goaltender of the Year at the start of his team’s firstround series with the Ghostriders.
Defence Dynamiters Jordan Busch (0-4-4) returned from a two-game
Thunder Cats Brock Lefebvre (4-0, 1.75 GAA, .935 SP) provides the backbone for the Thunder Cats.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your willingness to adjust and transform will help you regain your position in a power play. You still could be reactive to a situation, and your reaction might create even more uproar. An exciting opportunity comes through your daily routine. Tonight: Take a step back, then decide. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your imagination rarely has limits. In fact, you might find that staying centered while working with someone is a very dynamic and interesting prospect. Unexpected thoughts come forward that might force you to see whether your instincts are righton. Tonight: Take off ASAP. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) One-on-one relating draws many people toward you. You might want to reconsider a recent conversation. It appears as if you have a strong feeling about what works best for you. As a result, you’ll see dynamic results. Tonight: Spend time
with a loved one or a dear friend. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Defer to others, and be more sensitive to their needs. You could be surprised by how much you have projected your expectations onto them. Do a better job of listening, and you’ll be a better, more caring person. Tonight: Go along with someone else’s request. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You have a lot of ground to cover, and you will do it as long as you are willing to adapt your schedule. The unexpected occurs when you least expect it. Be willing to take action immediately if you want to grab an opportunity before it vanishes. Tonight: Join a co-worker. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your creativity allows you to move forward in a direction that appeals to you. A loved one will demonstrates his or her caring in a way that will mean a lot to you. You could be surprised by someone else’s unexpected words or actions. Tonight: Let your guard down. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Consider taking the day off or working from home. You have pushed so hard to achieve a certain goal that you could be a lot more tired than you realize. The unexpected electrifies you; use the surge well. A partner will be full of surprises. Tonight: Play it low-key. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Emphasize communication in order to achieve your goals. Your ability to network appears to have excelled, as you have so many people around you. Share some of your offbeat ideas with a dear friend who encourages you to open up more. Tonight: At a favorite spot. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Be aware of what is possible, and choose your direction with care. You have a way of handling funds while taking risks that amazes certain people who are close to you. You are changing your position financially, and with it your status. Tonight: Indulge a loved one. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You beam in much more of what you want because you commu-
nicate in a very clear way. You also could be trying to express an unusually creative idea. Try as you may, several people still won’t get it. Your domestic life seems to have a tenuous quality to it. Tonight: Just ask. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Slow down and do a better job of understanding what comes next. You sometimes race through what you have to do, but you miss some details that could be important. Return a call to a loved one who you care a lot about. Tonight: In the thick of the moment. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Others defer to you, as they sense that you have a better indication of what will come next. Be willing to revise your plans, especially if a friend needs you to adapt. You might have gone overboard in trying to make an impression. Tonight: Someone finds you lovable. BORN TODAY Musician Emilio Estefan (1953), politician Rick Perry (1950), writer Chaz Bono (1969) ***

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Yesterday, I tried to help my son do his third-grade homework. One question was: “If Sue runs around the track twice, and John runs around the track four times more than Sue, how many times does John run around the track?” My son submitted his answer as 8, but the teacher said the answer was 6. Do I speak up? Should I simply assume the lesson here is a “life lesson” to respect the teacher’s answer even if it’s wrong, and explain to my 8-year-old son that there is sometime more than one right answer? -Perplexed Dad Dear Perplexed: If the problem had read “four more times than Sue,” it would be an addition problem, but “four times more” makes it a multiplication problem. The teacher made a mistake (she added instead of multiplied) and should be told. She may have been using an answer sheet that was incorrect, and she certainly wouldn’t want to use it again with another class. Most teachers have email addresses. Write to her and say that your son cannot figure out how the answer could be 6, and neither can you, so perhaps there was an oversight when the paper was graded. Be nice. Tell her you know how easy it is for these things to happen and thought she’d want to know so she can correct the papers that were mismarked. The life lesson for your son is how to stand up for himself and register an objection without becoming objectionable. Dear Annie: My husband passed away 10 years ago, when I was 57. After a year, I began dating again. I have met many nice gentlemen. Often, I am introduced by mutual friends, but I have also used online dating. Perhaps your readers would be interested in what I have learned about meeting dates online. I quickly learned to weed out the ones who are just looking for money. Many of them are incarcerated. If they cannot meet in person within one week, I block them from contacting me. I never share my name, address or phone number. I will take their number and call after blocking my own number from displaying on their cellphones or through caller ID. I am attractive, get my hair styled regularly, use makeup and take care of my body and my health. I wear a size 4. I watch my diet and go to the gym. I have a good income and insist on paying my own way. My profiles say I am interested only in dating. But after a few dates, many men tell me that they want to marry me. They are hurt that I am not interested. If a man is looking at online sites and wants something long-term, he should not be contacting a woman whose profile clearly states that she wants only to date. I am upfront about this and always feel bad when I have to break it off because the man gets too serious. -- Self-Sufficient Suzie Dear Suzie: You seem to have a good handle on meeting men in a safe way. (We would add to meet them in public places for coffee, not dinner.) You also present yourself as an attractive, independent woman and we suspect your insouciance about marriage makes you quite appealing to men who are more accustomed to women who seem desperate or clingy.
