Views Opinion: What do you expect for $25(+)? by Brian Coombs So the recent changes to basic cable packages mandated by the CRTC aren’t what people were hoping for. While the providers are offering a $25 basic TV package, which can be added to with pickand-pay channels or other bundles, in practice, apparently this isn’t really going to save much money for many cable subscribers. Many of the cable companies are attaching fees, stopping discounts, making people get an internet package to get the ‘skinny’ $25 package or making it difficult for people to choose the lower priced deal. To be fair, Shaw cable has been far more transparent than other providers in letting people access this deal. Now there have been numerous stories over the years that range from calling the CRTC toothless, all the way to alleging that the regulator is in the pockets of the big telecom corporations. After all, it has allowed a very small amount of players to dominate how Canadians get their news and entertainment. This is contrary its original mandate, at least according to its mission statement where it states “We encourage competition in telecommunications markets to ensure that Canadians have a choice of innovative and affordable services.” It has been many years since the CRTC has been seen as a friend for the average working citizen, and many more years since the big cable pro-
viders have had warm fuzzy feelings directed at them. But none of this is a surprise, and indeed, barely news. Yet, there is a real furor over the supposed ‘skinny’ package. This seems, at first, like a distraction. Food prices are at an all-time high. BC Hydro cost is increasing by 28 per cent over the coming years, gas prices for your car are lower than last year, but far off what it should be, and generally your dollar buys far less today than what it did a few years ago. So getting less than what was expected for a cable package seems less important. But let’s take a look at that. Cable companies generally make a good portion of their cash from purchasing shows from producers and beaming them into your home. Let’s look at the value of that. Even with the basic package, there are hundreds of hours of news, sports and general entertainment to be had. Compare that with the cost of taking your family to a restaurant for a single meal, or going to a movie or even for a drive with a picnic lunch. All of those activities cost far more than a basic cable package and only last for a couple of hours or so. But this is entertainment, and it appears to fall under a different category in this age of bit torrent and cheap Netflix. We seem to be living in a time where we all expect to receive news and entertainment for free,

or next to nothing. Even large news and entertainment organizations such as The Huffington Post seem to be proud not to pay the people that give them the content that has made them valued at over $1billion, according to Stephen Hull, the editor-in-chief of Huffington Post UK. As for the cable companies, you can bet they are more than aware that people have been cutting the cable cord for years now. With on-demand streaming services bringing the news and entertainment people want, without those horrendous commercials, they are probably trying to get as much money as possible from their cable infrastructure while they still can. But where does this all stop? In North America, we are an entertainmentobsessed culture that wants it all for free. When news agencies and entertainment producers stop being able to pay their bills, who will produce the content? There’s actually a pretty simple answer to that question, and we have seen it for some time now. Entertainment, and yes, even news, will be paid for by wealthy individuals and corporations that are definitely pushing an agenda. Independent visionaries will be sidelined, the common citizen will be ignored and bold ideas will be stifled. That is intellectually unhealthy and even undemocratic. Taken in that context, paying the same price for cable for a month – for as much as you would to take your loved one to a single movie – doesn’t seem like too much of a price to pay.

Mountie gets his man – safely back home On February 26, 2016 Cranbrook RCMP received several calls of an elderly male who was loitering near the 711 Store. Cst. Robert Notari spent considerable time looking for the male before he finally found him. The man had missed his medical transport back to Fernie and had no money for a hotel room. Cst. Notari approached the Salvation Army and found him a bed for the night. For those of us old enough to remember the old radio show, “The Rest of the Sto-
ry”, here’s how this one ends. Cst. Notari, who was in between nightshift, went back to the Salvation Army in his personal vehicle few hours after the end of his shift picked up the gentleman and drove him back to his home in Fernie ensuring he got home safely. It’s these types of incidents that show the Cranbrook RCMP’s dedication to our community as a whole whether they are on shift or not.

Improving the system for people with disabilities 1. The proposed legislation will incorporate changes to the application process for person’s with disabilities. When the legislation comes into force those who have already qualified for similar services, may be eligible to complete a much simpler PWD application. 2. The Ministry will be working to streamline the PWD application process. This will help the applicants and it will also reduce paperwork for doctors and other health care professionals. 3. Easing the process surrounding PWD applications is one of the steps in Accessibility 2024. Company credits customer service as main reason for awards If you like hot tubs, are interested in fitness or for that matter, drink water, chances are you already know Culligan Water & Beachcomber Hot Tubs & Flaman Fitness Cranbrook. What you may not know is that this year Beachcomber Hot Tubs have won the coveted Unique Super Centre Store of the Year award. The business was also awarded Flaman Fitness Store of the Year for B.C. On the Culligan side, Cranbrook’s local store has also been in the Top 25 in North America for many years and have received Excellence in Manufacturing year after year. – which is no small feat. Shane Ouillette, Store Manager for the business outlined some of the reasons for achieving the awards. “One of the biggest things we do is have the best long-term value in the market,” explained Ouillette. The original owners got into Culligan in the 1970s, with Beachcomber starting here in 1983. Eventually Flaman came under the umbrella as well.
Photo Amy Soucy
Management and staff at Culligan Water & Beachcomber Hot Tubs & Flaman Fitness seen here with the many awards won over years of service to the area. “We got into Flaman because of their commitment to quality and customer care. Flaman donates money into the community every year, in fact “Kootenay Haven” - a program of Canadian Mental Health Association, benefited last year. Another reason why the business has received this many awards is its variety and it’s di-
versity. Anyone can be diverse but to do it without sacrificing customer service is another. “The most important thing for us is customer service, we appreciate and respect our customers and try to exceed our customers expectations. We’re a non-commissioned store and work for the customer. Customers pay our wages
and we know that.” To that end, the company came back recently to selling patio furniture because customers liked the convenience and our commitment to quality in all that we do. Ouillette noted that products are not the only thing that makes a successful company. “We have an awesome staff and Ownership
here. The awards we win are because of the whole team and people want to stay here. We have a warehouse/technician who has been here 26 years, a hot tub technician who has been here 17 years, Murray (Murray Floyd) has owned the business for over 15 years, many 10 or close to 10 year employees and I’ve been here 15

years,” said Ouillette. “It’s a family style of business who sincerely cares about it’s community” Combine the products and staff with a large amount of sponsorships the company gives out to the community, such as donating water for various groups, or sponsoring numerous holein-one competitions and
the business stands to win more awards in the future. “We are very proud of what we do, at Culligan Water, Beachcomber Hot Tubs and Flaman Fitness Cranbrook and look forward to serving you in the future, just look for our seven-foot tall running man out front and stop by to say hello,” said Ouillette.

Chef Cox crowned champion of the Stone Soup Challenge It was a spectacular community turnout for the final showdown of the Kootenay Granite Stone Soup Challenge. More than 180 people gathered in the Grand Ballroom at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort and Convention Centre to sample the soups of Chef Rusty Cox of the Heid Out Restaurant and Brewhouse and Chef Graham Barnes of Max’s Place. The crowd buzzed with energy and conversation as they enjoyed the two soup creations; tables seemed

WE’RE HUMBLED. SUBARU OWNERS, HOWEVER, OUGHT TO BE FORGIVEN FOR TOOTING THEIR OWN HORNS.
A highly regarded consumer testing magazine recently named Subaru to an exclusive list of the world’s top automotive brands. While the news is very flattering, we’re happy to remind ourselves that our cars and crossovers are at their best when getting groceries, running the kids to practice or heading out to our favourite fishing spot on a mucky back road. Isn’t it time you asked yourself if a Subaru is right for you?

to be equally divided between Cox’s Lemongrass Ginger Chicken with Vegetables and Chef Graham Barnes’s Split Pea and Bacon. The 11 chef judges and celebrity guest judges were also torn. By a vote of 6 to 5, the judges leaned ever so slightly to Cox’s soup. “We are absolutely thrilled with how the community once again embraced this event,” says Riley Wilcox, Executive Director of the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation. “It truly was a collaborative community effort that concluded with a joyful celebration of food, friends, fun, and funds raised. We offer our most heartfelt thanks to our chefs, judges, sponsors, silent auction contributors and those who came and joined us today for lunch.” About $10,500 was raised this year at the 2nd Annual Kootenay Granite Stone Soup Challenge, bringing the total funds raised during the lifespan of the event to $22,500. The Kootenay Granite Stone Soup Challenge is in support of the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation general endowment fund, which provides annual grants to local non-profits, as well as Salvation Army homeless shelter project.

Career Fair today at COTR The tenth annual Career and Job Fair is shaping up to be another great event. Representatives from dozens of local and national companies, government agencies and professional associations will be on hand from 1 – 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9 at College of the Rockies’ Cranbrook main campus. The Career and Job Fair, a partnership between Kootenay Business Magazine, the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce, the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and College of the Rockies, is the largest career networking event in the East Kootenays. “This is an excellent opportunity for those looking for work or for a career change to discover what opportunities are available to them,”
says Mary Davies, College of the Rockies Career and Placement Officer. “We encourage job seekers to come to this event prepared – to dress neatly, have resumes on hand and take the time to talk about their skills to employers – whether they are looking for a career, for summer employment, or both.” The event will bring companies into direct contact with College and secondary school students, providing them with the opportunity to get young people interested in their industry. Members of the general public are encouraged to attend as well. “The Career and Job Fair offers an important benefit for businesses,” notes Keith Powell, publisher of Kootenay Business Magazine. Attendees of the Career and Job Fair will have
the opportunity to enter to win numerous door prizes, including a $300 tuition award for College of the Rockies. Fees paid by participating exhibitors contribute to College of the Rockies’ Career and Job Fair Entrance Awards, available to students entering the College’s Business programs and who have a goal of earning a minimum of a diploma in any major. Entrance award values are up to $1,500. Details on award criteria and applications will be available at the Career and Job Fair, in schools and online at cotr.ca/financialaid. For more information on the Career and Job Fair, contact Mary Davies at 250-489-2751 ext. 3441 or mdavies@ cotr.bc.ca

2016 Jeep Renegade Overview: Jeep’s take on small off-roading is an ItalianAmerican 4x4 gets some minor polishing for its second season. Drivetrain: Turbocharged and non-turbocharged four-cylinder engines as well as six-speed manual transmissions and nine-speed automatics; Four-wheel-drive optional with either engine. Despite being sold alongside the Compass and Patriot, the Renegade is the smallest of Jeep’s miniscule off-roaders, and by a quite a bit. It was designed here, but it’s built at a Fiat plant in Italy and sold in more than 100 countries. The front and rear body overhangs are practically non-existent (perfect for
off-roading) and there’s plenty of space between the tires and the fenders. The vehicle’s narrow width does place a premium on elbowroom, but the dash and control panel are well laid-out, the oversized knobs are clearly marked and the meaty steering wheel closely replicates what you’ll find in the larger Grand Cherokee. Base Renegades run with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a sixspeed manual transmission. The non-turbo 2.4-litre option puts out 184 horsepower and 177 pound-feet and is matched to a nine-speed automatic. Front-

wheel-drive is standard on all but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk, while Active Drive four-wheeldrive is optional. The system’s Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes are augmented by an exclusive Rock setting for the Trailhawk. Additionally, the Trailhawk comes with a lowrange 20:1 crawl-ratio gearing, unique wheels with all-terrain tires plus other off-road goodies. Renegades equipped with either drivetrain should prove reasonably thrifty with just 1,400 kilograms to move around. A gassaving automatic-axle-disconnect feature for 4x4 models will reengage the rear wheels when maximum traction is required.
The base Renegade Sport includes only the bare essentials, while the Latitude adds air conditioning, roof rails, fog lights, touch-screen audio, Bluetooth connectivity and now rainsensing wipers. Buyers of the “Limited” model get dual-zone climate control, heated leathertrimmed seats (including eightway power driver’s seat) and 18-inch wheels (16- and 17-inchers come on lower trims). The optional MySky dual roof panels can be removed to maximize the open-air experience. And the new optional BeatsAudio system combines over 500 watts and nine speakers, including a 16.5-centimeter subwoofer that

The cadets meet one evening per week from September to June and during the summer months they have the opportunity to attend courses up to 6 weeks long at various locations throughout Canada. The Royal Canadian Air Cadets, in partnership with the Air Ca-
det League of Canada and the Department of National Defence has been training youth in Canada for over 70 years. The Cadets are the largest government funded youth program in Canada with over 50,000 participants across Canada. The Royal Canadian Air Cadets accepts youth between the ages of 12-18 who have a desire to learn more about the air element of the Canadian Forces,
wish to develop the attributes of leadership and good citizenship and who wish to promote physical fitness. While the program is military based, there is no obligation for a cadet to join the Canadian Armed Forces when he or she finishes their cadet career. Cadets are also encouraged to learn more about opportunities within Canada’s Aviation Industry.

There is no simple or easy answer to the underlying cause and treatment of depression. It is a complex psycho-socialmedical experience and its treatment often requires a holistic approach that addresses a wide variety of factors. As examples, there is good data to suggest that diet, exercise, unexpressed feelings, brain chemistry, traumatic experiences, work and love troubles can all play a role in the development and ongoing struggle with depression. The complexity of the depressive experience is overlooked when there is a knee jerk reaction to rely exclusively on drug therapy. In fact, there is now clear evidence that long term reliance on antidepressants actually makes the underlying imbalance in brain chemistry worse, leaving the depressed person utterly dependent on medication while not addressing the complexity of the condition and neglecting the underlying causes. Sometimes depression is just a healthy dose of sadness and the real problem is that we live in a world that holds the absurd attitude that there is something wrong if you are not happy. Imagine a world where sadness did not inform art and music. Loss, tragedy and the day to day struggles of family, work and relationships make sadness an integral part of the human landscape. I can say personally that periods of depression have given me insight into myself and my life experience that have
made my life more interesting, given it more depth and certainly made me better able to relate to others who are sad and depressed. Healthy doses of depression come and go and allow us to grow emotionally and expand our capacity for self care and compassion. On the other hand, when a depressive experience locks in and becomes chronic and pervasive it needs to be treated. Diet and lifestyle factors play a key role. Regular exercise and eating a diet rich in whole, plant-based foods while being low in sugar, alcohol and caffeine has been shown to improve mood. Counselling and experiential therapy like Gestalt therapy can be used to help work through unresolved feelings and to help come to terms with the struggles or wounding that can contribute to the depressive experience. Amino acids play a key role in the regulation of neurotransmitters and can be used alone or in conjunction with antidepressants to rebuild neurotransmitter levels that may be the underlying cause of depression in the first place. As the underlying level of serotonin and dopamine normalize with the use of amino acids, the need for, and dependence on, the antidepressant lessens and can be reduced and eliminated under the guidance of the prescribing physician. This three pronged approach addresses the underlying cause of depression and does so in a way that does not cause harmful drug related side effects.

Canadian Federation of University Women are proud to announce
Donna Grainger Woman of the Year
Donna Grainger, CFUW Cranbrook’s Woman of the Year, is just as humble, gracious and intelligent in person as you might imagine. Grainger, who is soon to retire from her position of East Kootenay Foundation For Health’s executive director, recently sat down with the Kootenay Advertiser to talk about her past, present and future. Q: What was your employment history before coming aboard with the EKFH? A: Actually, I had been unemployed. I had finished with working for the Delta St. Eugene pre-opening sales team and was not going to bid on the job. But a friend encouraged me and the rest is history. Before Delta, I had spend 2-and-ahalf years in private industry and 23 years with BC Hydro. Q: Have you seen a difference in the region’s health care from the start of your tenure here? A: When I first came on board, we were fairly focused on the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Now it is also about acute care, residential care, diagnostics, lab services
you name it. We are now an organization that looks at all facets of health care. We are also advocates for what the community needs as well. And I like the fact that we are a team - the board of directors, financial officer and volunteers. When I say a team, it is not only the foundation. All of us here have grown to a big family all invested in raising money for health care. I take that close to the heart. Q: Has there ever been a truly heartwarming moment in your time with the EKFH? A: There have been very many. One of the coolest things happened about seven years ago. This little boy was eight-years-old and he took his birthday money and bought a Wii to give to the pediatric unit. He had been there himself and didn’t want the other kids to get bored. That’s a pretty special thing for an eight-year-old to do. Another time was when my dad passed away. Four days later I had to be at the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society. The event was spectacular and I arrived to open arms
Staf f & manag
and hugs and a sympathy card. They saw me as a person, not just an organization. Of course, the major campaigns always warmed my heart. Q: How does it feel to be named Woman of the Year? A: I am truly humbled and its actually overwhelming. When the limelight is thrown back on yourself it is humbling. I can name 25 people off the top of my head who deserve it as well, but I an truly honoured. Q: Now that you are retiring from the foundation, do you have any plans for the future? A: I’m just going to slow down for six months to a year. My Type 1 Diabetes is not where it should be, so I’m just trying to get back and grounded. My husband retired in September and we love camping and cooking and being together. He was a truck driver and I was doing events. We were like two ships passing in the night and now we can dock together. Where are we going to camp? Right here. The Kootenays is where it is at for us.
