“Silver City Days was like our PNE back in the day,” chuckled volunteer Keith Smyth. So this year’s polishing of the traditional Trail shindig may bring back some of that old city nostalgia and thrill along with new amusements and a revitalized look. “It’s called a Homecoming Celebration,” said Smyth, the operations manager. “We want to bring back more excitement for the kids and have others come back to see their folks and relatives in town - all converge to make that social and cultural thing happen.” Smyth gave a nod to all the past volunteers who carried off the five-day affair, which is slated from May 4 to May 8 this year. “There’s been so many changes over the years because of the work involved in the midway, the vendor piece in downtown Trail and Gyro Park on Sunday,” he explained. “But it wasn’t the arena, and everyone talks about that, so we put a lot of emphasis on going back into the arena with the Sidewalk Cafe

and entertainment - it’s already going around town and there’s a real buzz in the air.” A popular bare foot challenge that’s been absent near a decade, the Grape Stomp, is set to return on the busy Saturday. But all day, the stage will be filled with entertainers, like Dan the One Man Band, an international musician with a career spanning more than two decades, and David Cassell Space Commander, an interactive comedian. Locals will rock centre stage later that night when Gary Stewart and the Flashbacks hit the high notes for a dance that runs from 8 p.m. until midnight. And that is what this year’s Silver City Days is really all about, showcasing locals in the Trail area, says Smyth. “We are trying to create a win win with partners in this town and putting on this thing together,” he said, mentioning the 16 planning meetings to date and many other small group gettogethers. “What I do when I go on the road, is show people why this is important to Trail,” Smyth added. “It may look like a small town event, but a lot of our town goes into it and it changes the

flavour of our city for those (five) days. “People start again, spring is about values we

seeing each other just starting - it’s the whole thing want and the traditions we have.” And with those traditions, comes the fabulous food. The spaghetti feast and live Italian musica at the Colombo Lodge is a go for Friday night, and a host of community volunteers will offer a “feisty” pulled pork bun, coleslaw and crunchy pickle during Saturday’s Sidewalk Cafe. “We went a different route for the entrée meal in the Sidewalk Cafe,” said Smyth, noting social clubs are smaller these days and unable to make an all-day pasta dinner. “The city, Geoff Tellier (chef instructor at Selkirk College, Trail campus) and his students and the Gateway Christian Church are going to put this together for the price of a fast food meal, that’s what we are aiming for.” Continued on A4

Rossland skier places sixteenth at Worlds ROSSLAND — Local cross country skier Julien Locke placed sixteenth in the skate sprint at the U23 World Championships in Romania. He did well given that he was competing against some of the top cross country skiers in the world. Locke placed third in his quarterfinal and missed out on the semi-finals by 0.1 seconds. “It was very disappointing not to make the final, which was my goal, but I know that I was able to ski at the level they’re skiing at,” he said. Conditions were less than optimal for the cham-

pionships. It was warm and snow had to be trucked in to setup a 2.5-km loop. Locke will finish off his season at the National Championships in White Horse where he’ll compete in five races: the team sprint, a two-person team relay, a 10-km classic, a 15-km skate sprint and a 50-km classic. Before leaving for Romania, Locke was the sprint leader for the NorAm Sprint Series, but while he was away he missed the Westerns where Bob Thompson bumped him into second. At Nationals, his goal is to reclaim the top spot.

Castlegar Russian students visit San Francisco CASTLEGAR — Twelve students from Twin Rivers Elementary’s Russian bilingual program, together with their chaperones, travelled to San Francisco, California last week. The purpose of the trip was to attend the annual Russian Festival that has been held in that city for 28 years. The festival included performances ranging from traditional Russian dances and ballet to

gymnastics and balalaika music. One stop on the trip was a luncheon at Katia’s Russian Tea Room. Katia is a first generation Russian immigrant and she prepared the group home-made traditional foods including piroshki, pel’meni, marinated mushrooms and other cultural dishes. In turn, Cheveldave presented her with a hand-carved ladle made by Kootenay artisan Harry Hadikin.

The group then explored the area around Geary Blvd., also know as “Little Russia”. While visiting a Russian Orthodox church, they checked out the architecture and were treated to a tour and explanation of the symbolism in the church. One-hundred thirty-fifth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Earlier in this series we saw that Nelson’s Fairview neighbourhood was originally called Salisbury, or Salisbury Landing. It also had three other names. A Victoria consortium surveyed the area as a townsite and called it Nelson City, first mentioned in an ad in the Victoria Daily Colonist of Aug. 7, 1889. An auction of lots was held that month, and a beautiful colour prospectus was issued including a street map. The avenues were numbered first through sixth plus Nelson and Kootenay, while the streets were given alphabetical names that mostly survive today: Anderson, Behnsen, Cottonwood, Davies, Elwyn, Fell, and Gordon. (Gordon St. is now Gordon Rd. and Kootenay Ave. was renamed Kokanee Ave., probably when Fairview joined the City of Nelson in 1921 — there was already a Kootenay St. in Nelson.) The Nelson City Land & Improvement Co. promoted what they called Nelson City but what locals referred to as Bogustown. Today it’s known as Fairview. This 1899 stock certificate is made out to BC business titan Joseph A. Sayward, a partner of Joshua Davies, for whom Davies St. in Fairview was named. The company’s president was James F. Fell, for whom Fell St. was named. The secretary was Edgar Crow Baker, a Victoria politician, although he’s not Baker St.’s namesake. Ed Mannings collection Anderson, the police officer and mining recorder who named his pre-emption Salisbury. Anderson Creek was also named after him. Most of the other street names were after prominent Victorians, including Thomas Elwyn, Joshua Davies, and James F. Fell, some or all of whom were involved in the townsite promotion. Additionally, there were Pine, Maple, and Oak

streets. According to the Colonist of Jan. 7, 1896, many people bought lots in Nelson City “under the impression that they were buying lots in Nelson itself.” That, combined with the fact local bills for the development weren’t paid on time, resulted in a colourful if disparaging nickname for the area: Bogustown. West Kootenay community TEETH clinic wants community input West Kootenay Community TEETH Clinic Society (TEETH) is a registered not for profit society whose sole purpose is to increase access to dental care for all. The society is currently operating a low cost clinic within a dental office in Nelson. This one office, currently serves all residents in Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary Regional Districts. Clients of TEETH receive dental care with a 40 per cent discount. Many dedicated paid staff, volunteers, donation of clinic space and other discounts and donations have enabled the program to be viable and sustainable. TEETH recently won first prize — $50,000 from Pacific Blue Cross 75th Anniversary “Share the Care Giveaway.” This prize enables the Board of TEETH to invite dentists, dental professionals and community members of the Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary Regional Districts to unite with the work of TEETH’s mission “To increase access to dental care for all citizens in the communities regardless of income level.” The board is seeking partnerships, for the purpose of increasing access to low-cost quality dental care We are seeking your ideas of how you can partner with TEETH in your community. Although we have envisioned similar clinics operating in the rest of the Kootenay Boundary region, we realize each community is unique.

The Revenant sound team captures two top awards; misses out on Oscar “Mad Max: Fury Road,” during the three-hour Academy Award affair. O’Shea , a 1981 J.L. Crowe Secondary grad, was already on another

movie set in Vancouver, the third film in the “Planet of the Apes” series, when he talked with the Trail Times last month. “I’ve been hacking away at this for 30 years,” he said. “My experience helped me to get the job (“The Revenant”) and have the opportunity to be where we are right now and have these nominations.” The Vancouverbased sound crew included Chris Duesterdiek, a production sound mixer from Salt Spring Island, and Candice Todesco, a sound assistant O’Shea has worked alongside since the science fiction disaster film, “2012.” “Most people knew when we got on the movie that there was a high possibility there would be some type of nomination because of DiCaprio (Leonardo DiCaprio, lead actor who won his first Oscar Sunday night),” O’Shea added. “So everyone is kind of riding on the coattails of that.” Director Alejandro G. Inarritu also won the Oscar for best director, his second consecutive win. Though he acknowledged being on an Oscar nominated movie was a good addition to his 30-year resume, O’Shea said he didn’t think the recognition would lead to more opportunities - he already has 67 credits to date, according to IMDb (Internet Movie Database). The lengthy list includes TV series such as “Psych” and “Da Vinci’s Inquest” as well as popular movies like “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “The A-Team,” “Tommorowland,” and “Godzilla.” “I’ve worked with a sound mixer who was nominated for an Oscar, for the movie ‘Unforgiven,’” he said, clarifying he wasn’t on that particular sound crew. “You might get a job before someone else, it might get you that,” O’Shea added. “I guess I can say I’ll always be employed but it’s been a long time invested in the business and it takes time to gain experience.”

from budding musicians. “It’s the highlight of their two years at Selkirk College,” says Selkirk College Keyboard/ Arranging Instructor Gilles Parenteau. “Our students put these showcases together to demonstrate what they’ve learned and it’s a chance to really express who they are as musicians.” Starting March 10, there will be 12 nights of fantastic entertainment filling Nelson’s Shambhala Music & Performance Hall. Mitchell Hahn is one of 20 students that will bring a wide array of musical genres to the stage including folk, rock, jazz, funk and heavy metal. “I’ve seen some really awesome electronic music with synth medleys, guitar solos that are just jaw dropping, and some incredible song writing,” he says. “For opening night [March 10] James Villa and I have partnered up and we’ll be playing all original songs. The night will feature some awesome

electric soul, dramatic alt rock, psychedelic pop, and funk-hop. I’m excited. It should be a special night.” At the end of their music education, the learning and evaluation continues through these performances where students handle every aspect of putting a show together. From lighting and sound to their promotional poster and what they will say on stage, the musicians must consider even the little things like taking the snare drum off the stage before a ballad so it doesn’t vibrate, explains Parenteau. Hahn, a singer and guitar player, says skills learned in the classroom are easy to understand in theory but putting on a professional show forces students to put it all together and deal with any problems in a dynamic real-life scenario. “It’s your show and if things go wrong, it’s on you,” he says.
