Huge increase in overdoses In 2015 firefighters responded to 25 drug overdoses – 18 already in 2016 Kevin Mills Mission Record

The number of drug overdoses in Mission have risen rapidly so far this year. New fire chief Dale Unrau told council on Monday that firefighters have responded to at least 18 overdoses in 2016. That’s more than half of the 25 overdose calls in all of 2015, in just the first two months of the year.

Based on the current response statistics, Unrau said “we’re in for a large increase in this type of incidents.” Police are aware of the increase and continue to target traffickers. “This reported increase highlights the dangers of illicit drug use,” said Mission RCMP Insp. Ted De Jager. “There is an increase in the distribution of Fentanyl, although we have no evidence to suggest that this is the cause at this point.

We will continue to work with our partners to target those who traffic in these types of drugs. These dealers prey on some of our most vulnerable citizens and are a direct threat to the safety of our community.” UNRAU Fentanyl is a fast-acting narcotic that is said to have heroin-like ef-

fects. It is similar to, but more potent than morphine. The increase in overdoses is not just a Mission problem. Numbers have been rising across the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. In an attempt to prevent overdose fatalities, the B.C. Ministry of Health is now allowing first responders to administer naloxone, if needed, in overdose cases. Currently, Mission firefighters are only Continued on A4

STORM TOPPLES TREES A parked vehicle on Grand Street and 3rd Ave. was encompassed by a fallen tree as a wind storm blew its way through the Fraser Valley Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Gusts hit the 90 km/h mark at the peak of the storm. As of Thursday morning, approximately 2,500 Mission homes lost power, according to the BC Hydro website. About 100,000 customers were without power in the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and North and West Vancouver. The storm forced several Mission schools to close for the day. Crash victim mourned 15-year-old girl killed in Mission car accident Monique Tamminga Black Press

A tragic accident in Mission early Saturday morning has claimed the life of a young Langley girl. Brookswood Secondary student Lidia Ramos was supposed to celebrate her 16th birthday this week. Instead, her family and friends are mourning her death. Lidia, who was in Grade 10, had told her parents she was sleeping over at a friend’s house but instead had gone that night to a bonfire party off a logging road in Mission. At around 1 a.m., four young people were driving back from the bonfire along switchback roads during a heavy rainstorm, Mission RCMP said. Lidia was riding in the backseat of the 1999 Nissan Sentra. There were three young men in the vehicle with her. The driver, a 21-year-old Langley man, lost control on the muddy turns coming down Burma Road. The vehicle slid 15 feet down an embankment and came to rest on its passenger side, with the roof against a tree, said Mission RCMP. The driver and the front-seat passenger, a 19-year-old man from Surrey, were taken to hospital with upper body injuries and both were released from hospital. Lidia, who was sitting behind the driver, died at the scene, said police. The 16-year-old Langley boy sitting beside her – thought to be Lidia’s boyfriend – remains in a coma, in critical condition. On the weekend police said speed may have played a role.

Langley’s Lidia Ramos, a 15-year-old Brookswood Secondary student, was killed in Mission early Saturday morning when a car in which she was a passenger slid off Burma Road and crashed into trees. FACEBOOK PHOTO Mission RCMP said they have spoken to the driver but the investigation continues. The weather that evening was so bad that the Air Ambulance helicopter was unable to land near the scene of the crash. It was raining heavily and the roads were slick. Lidia was one of six children in the Ramos family. Her sister, Rosita, described her as a ‘beautiful angel, gone too soon.’ Her mother is calling on all drivers to slow down and think of their passengers. “There is no need to speed. No one wants to lose their child or sibling,” said Angela Ramos. Friends of the Ramos family, Shelby DeLisle and Brandy Minch started a gofundme ac-

count to help ease the family’s financial burden. More than $5,000 had been raised by Monday morning to help cover funeral costs. “She was a sweet girl taken too soon,” wrote DeLisle on the gofund page. “She was a sweet, caring, funny little girl who never forgot to say hi and give you a hug no matter how many times you saw her.” Rosita said her family is one of faith and they know their angel is in heaven now. According to the gofundme page, donations can be dropped off at any Church’s Chicken location in B.C. Or people can email beautifulshelby@gmail. com or bminch@shaw.ca.

allowed to assist with breathing, perform CPR and apply oxygen until an ambulance arrives. The new program allows firefighters to inject naloxone – a drug used to block or reverses the effects of opioids – if needed. Mission firefighters will be receiving training for this new program, which should be running in about four months. “It’s a very simple training program, done in under two hours. It will make a huge difference in our ability to respond to these types of incidents,” said Unrau. The naloxone will be issued in a predetermined amount. “It is a very specific dose in a single use vial. Each person would get exactly the same amount,” said Unrau, who added there are strict procedures that have to be followed before administering a drug, including contacting a physician by phone to get approval.

A proposal to renovate Mission Municipal Hall has some councillors wondering if a new building should be constructed. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

New city hall needed? Kevin Mills Mission Record

A renovation project for Mission Municipal Hall has some councillors calling for an entirely new building. Staff presented council with its plan to revise the current floor plan and eliminate many of the interior walls, in order to create more floor space for 10 additional work stations. However, Coun. Carol Hamilton noted renovations may be a short-term solution. “We need to have a bigger

conversation, sooner than later, about replacing city hall because the working conditions here are not good.” Other councillors agreed. Jenny Stevens said she has been asking about an elevator for the building since 1995. “There are stairs everywhere. I’m not the only one around on a walker.” Pam Alexis called the building “limiting,” while Jim Hinds noted they’ve been talking about “revamping” the building for two decades. “We are at a point where we can’t really revamp much

more. Staff is going to try and squeeze a few more feet out of a building that has outgrown its use,” said Hinds. No decision was made to pursue a new building plan. The renovations should cost approximately $216,000, which was already budgeted to create a modular office building on the lawn behind municipal hall. That proposal has been scrapped in favour of the renovations. In 2003, the annex portion of municipal hall was constructed, to alleviate overcrowding at that time.

Three more telecommunication towers could be constructed in Mission. WIND Mobile telecommunication network wants to launch in Mission, and has requested permission to construct a 41-metre tower at 32086 Lougheed Highway (behind the Mission Sikh Temple) and a 10.9-metre tower at 8294 Cedar Street. A third, 2.8-metre rooftop tower would be located at 32700 7th Ave. on top of the Chartwell Carrington House Retirement Residence. A public consultation/information meeting will be held for the two freestanding towers. No meeting is required for the rooftop structure. The meeting is scheduled for March 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Main Purpose Room #4 at the Mission Leisure Centre located at 7650 Grand Street. Council will wait to hear the public’s response to the proposal before moving forward. More towers: Council has decided to support an application by TM Mobile Inc. (Telus) to construct a 60-metre telecommunications tower at Red Mountain, located on Dewdney Trunk Road in the Steelhead area. The property is Crown-owned land located on the east side of the mountain. Coun. Carol Hamilton said the tower is “long overdue” and residents are in support of the move. Coun. Jim Hinds attended the public information meeting and told council “nobody was against it.”

Local student awarded $5,000 scholarship Mission’s Richard Kunze planning to study biotechnology at University of BC Kier Junos Mission City Record

Richard Kunze says he missed out on a lot of things when he was younger. Unlike most students at Mission Secondary School, who play organized sports and have time to hang out, 18-year-old Kunze works on the family chicken farm in Hatzic where he was raised. But now that he’s been awarded a $5,000 scholarship, Kunze just might fly the coop. The scholarship is from the Horatio Alger Association (HAA), and the awards go to high school students that overcome significant adversity while demonstrating character and a will to pursue higher education. The average family income of recipients is about $20,000. Many recipients have experienced the death of a parent or guardian, or are living with disabilities or other challenges

Housing values on the rise

– all while maintaining high grades and finding time to work. Kunze has just applied to attend classes at the University of British Columbia (UBC) this September in biotechnology. Kunze has always been interested in science, and to him the field “seemed cutting edge.” He just finished reading Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, about an autocratic neo-London where all human beings are engineered on literal assembly lines. He wants to study the gene therapy aspects of the biotech field, which he believes will evolve into a more disease-defeating direction, and thinks that designer baby aspects should be illegal. HAA vets thousands of applications across Canada. There are 85 recipients this year, and Kunze is the only Missionite to receive one. “It’s very nice to just get that extra help,” said Kunze.

in February from $421,600 just in January. The rest of the Fraser Valley is also seeing increases, with housing prices almost doubling in the Valley since 2005. “In my 25 years of real estate, I have never seen such consistent demand for housing in the Fraser Valley,” said new FVREB president

Charles Wiebe. Within a year, Mission’s single-family dwellings have increased in value by 23 per cent, or about $89,000. Housing sales in the district increased 77 per cent from January to February, and new listings are up by 14.5 per cent. “Mission has a lot to offer,” said Wiebe. He said the transportation

accessibility is a bolstering factor, speaking to the proximity of Highway 1 and Lougheed Highway and the option of the West Coast Express train. He said that people find the vistas attractive, too. Housing prices are now at record highs. But Wiebe added that it’s still more favourable to buy in the communities farther east of Vancouver.

Poverty rates among single mothers and senior women are increasing and women continue to make only 77 per cent of what men earn for work of equal value,” reads Malcomson’s statement, before calling for the government to play “a crucial role” in advancing gender equality by creating strong social programs, including access to affordable housing, childcare, healthcare, and legal aid. Those are things that benefit us all. - Black Press

On March 8, we once again recognized the women in our world on International Women’s Day. Sure, we recognize them every day. They are our mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, friends and colleagues. So if we recognize them every day, do we still need an International Women’s Day? Hasn’t it pretty much been accepted that we need equality between the sexes? That women deserve the same rights as the rest of us? Yes. The answer is yes. Granted, we’ve come a long way since the United Nations invited their member states to proclaim March 8 as the official UN Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace in 1977, but women are still well behind men in terms of their rights and privileges. YOUR VIEWS

THE SHOPS AT

Theft impacts everyone I read the story in the Mission City Record printed last week (Thieves hit downtown – again, Feb. 26) that included an account of being broken into, and wanted to send some best wishes. When I read the story I felt disgusted – after all the flowers and hanging baskets stolen during summer… and now this. I was raised and went to high school in Mission; after about eight years of living across Canada I’ve returned to call Mission home again for the past two and a half years. During this time each one of my cars has been stolen, once when I was living on 7th Ave. and once living on 14th Ave. Items have also been stolen from my fenced private yard on two different occa-

sions (propane tank hooked up to an RV, a tent left out to dry after a camping trip, lawn furniture etc). I really feel your pain and I just wanted to say I hope you hang in there. It’s a violating experience and I completely understand how you might need some time and support to recover. In all four of my thefts the police attended the scene but no one was ever apprehended regardless of the officers always feeling like “they had suspects in mind that matched other cases.” In fact after my cars were recovered, or the report was made, I never heard from anyone ever again. When I read that part in your story my heart sank because it always seems the RCMP has

“an idea” but yet these criminals are let loose and commit crimes over and over and over again to good, honest, hard-working people. Your small business brings vibrancy and life to Mission, not to mention your taxes fuel our municipal needs, and this is how you’re repaid? The theft in this city is just overwhelming. It seems every neighbour and friend has a story of their own. So when I say you’re not alone, you really aren’t in the literal sense. But you’re not alone in thoughts either, and myself and my family wish you a full recovery, financially and through peace of mind. Sean O’Brien Mission

Every parent wants their child to have an inquisitive mind, to follow their heart, to be capable of overcoming obstacles and to make healthy choices. 4-H helps youth discover their passions and cultivate their self-confidence, as well as connecting them with caring mentors in their community. If your child is between the ages of six and 21, and loves animals, photography, gardening or mechanics, then 4-H is the program for them. Members have the chance to choose a project, and spend the year learning about it and caring for it. Some of the most popular projects are horses, beef or dairy cattle, dogs, sheep, photography and more. A common misconception is that you have to

live on a farm to be in 4-H, but the program is here to accommodate you. I have been in 4-H since I was nine years old, and during that time I have met life-long friends and have blossomed from a shy kid to a confident young woman, a 4-H B.C. ambassador and a youth spokesperson for the program. As a first year university student, I know that 4-H has prepared me to take on my future by giving me a good work ethic, an open mind and strong public speaking skills. It is clear when you talk to any of the volunteers who make 4-H possible that I am not the only one who feels this way; we all support the program because we truly believe it is changing the lives of kids all over the world, and we hope you will join us. David Brooks’ recent bestseller The Road to Character makes a compelling case for the importance of character in our lives. He draws a distinction between what he calls the résumé virtues and the eulogy virtues. The résumé virtues are our accomplishments and competencies which help us gain employment while the eulogy virtues are those things which have most to do with our character. Are we kind, honest, or brave, and do we form loving and lasting relationships? Do we spend as much time cultivating our character as we do our work skills and educational credentials? His book is a powerful and moving exhortation to spend more time and effort working on our characters. counts related to the unauthorized possession of a firearm. Mission RCMP were called to a home on Swan Avenue on June 14, 2014 after they received reports of shots fired and a woman yelling for help. Police found the 69-year-old victim – Croft’s wife – being tended to by neighbours in the driveway. She had sustained a wound to her lower posterior, from which she later recovered. Police surrounded the home, and Croft eventually exited the residence with a shotgun pointed at the ground. He dropped the weapon when he stumbled and fell, and police arrested him. He was charged the following day. Croft was again charged in December 2014 with two counts of breaching his bail conditions. Those charges are still before the courts.

Outlaws push Pilots to brink of elimination Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

The Mission City Outlaws are now just one win away from a berth in the Pacific Junior Hockey League final. Since falling behind 3-0 to the Ridge Meadows Flames in round one, the Outlaws have rolled off seven straight wins, and now have 3-0 stranglehold series lead on the Abbotsford Pilots. The Outlaws went up 3-0 Tuesday after their second overtime victory of the series. Mission beat Abbotsford 4-3 in extra time, as Brody Dyck capped off a comeback win. Mission trailed 2-0 after two periods, but then got three straight goals from Dyck, Sharma and David McGowan in the third period. Abbotsford tied the game back up at 15:57, but 5:23 into overtime Dyck scored the game winner. The game three win comes on the heels of

a 10-4 drubbing the Outlaws laid on the Pilots in Mission on Saturday. Mission got goals f ro m M i t ch e l l Biermann and Baylee Wright to skate out of the first period with a 2-1 lead, and they built that into a 5-2 lead after two. Sharma, Justin Bowerman and Tristan Dundas tallied for Mission in the second. The floodgates opened in the third, as Mission scored another five to reach double digits. Kolby Steen had a hat trick in the third, with Kyle Lennea and Bryce Pisiak also scoring. The Outlaws opened the series with a 5-4 overtime win in Abbotsford on Friday. The teams felt themselves out in the opening period, with Abbotsford’s Mateo Toledo scoring the first period’s opening goal at 17:43. The Outlaws came alive in the second period, as McGowan got Mission on the board,

and the Outlaws went up 2-1 and 3-2 to erase comebacks from the Pilots, but Abbotsford refused to quit. The Outlaws also got goals from Dyck and Brock Padgham in the second. Padgham’s goal, the second of the game for the Outlaws, was not without some controversy. The puck rang the inside of the post and came out, and after play continued a review was done by the referee. The goal was awarded shortly after. Alexander Methorst and Cole Methorst tallied for the Pilots, and the game was tied at three after two periods. Abbotsford’s Francis Bamford scored another weird one early in the third, after a bouncing puck in front of the net found itself in the back of the goal. Mission continued to push in the third period, and it finally paid off for the club when Steen scored the tying goal with 63 seconds

Mission’s Natalie Alves has been named the BC Horse Council’s Junior Athlete of the Year. SUBMITTED PHOTO sports and dance in the past, but the biggest reason why I stuck with this over everything else is the relationship with your partner. It’s something that is really unique.” That relationship hit a snag in March 2015, when Stella had colic surgery to save her life. Alves said it was tough to see her partner go through that pain. “She had lost over 100 pounds due to the

stress associated with surgery,” she said. “But after it she sat in the stall for 90 days and couldn’t really do anything to avoid complication. I missed a lot of the show season last year but she recovered and we competed at nationals.” It will be a busy summer competing for Alves, as she will next head to Oklahoma in July to participate in the Youth Nationals event.

The Mission RCMP Oɉcer in Charge, Inspector Ted De Jager wishes to invite the community to participate in the 2nd Annual Mission Policing Forum on Wednesday, March 23 at 6:00pm to 9:00pm (free Childcare available on site from 5:30pm to 8:30pm) at the Mission Leisure Centre.

Bi-Weekly Garbage Collection Begins April 4 Starting April 4, 2016, up to two 80-litre cans of garbage, not exceeding 20 kg in weight, will be collected every two weeks. Compostables and recyclables will still be collected in unlimited amounts every week. The 2015 waste audit showed that 28% of curbside “garbage” was actually compostable, and 14% was recyclable. That means 42% of “garbage” should not have ended up in the landÄll at all. Properly sorting your waste will preserve landÄll space, reduce landÄll greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources and help us meet our community’s targets for keeping recyclables and compostables out of the landÄll.

The Forum will feature an update on crime trends in the community, a review of the Mission RCMP Detachment Annual Performance Plan and an update on new initiatives to increase our levels of service and coordination with our community partners. The evening will end with a panel discussion and an open question period to raise concerns, oɈer suggestions and meet with police oɉcers and Mission Detachment StaɈ. The Crime Prevention Oɉce and volunteers will be out in force to display the full range of community crime prevention programs available here in Mission. If you would like more information on this event, please contact the Mission RCMP by calling 604-826-7161.

rience the music that Francis has brought to the festival over the last 28 years,” said MFMFS board president John Vissers. “He had an artistic vision and passion for world music that resulted in some stunning programming. To think that we were able to see Buffy SainteMarie, Valdy, Loreena McKennitt, Judy Collins, Ian Tyson and other world-class artists on stage in Mission is simply amazing.” According to the release, the festival attracts more than 10,000 people to Fraser River Heritage Park each year. This infusion of folks has “added greatly to the cultural fabric of the community” and to the local economy every summer. The international scope of the event has also attracted an international audience. In 2015, online ticket purchases were made from Brazil, New York, Norway, Pennsylvania, Scotland, every western U.S. state and several provinces. During this annual networking luncheon, we ask members to endorse by-law changes and yearly financials and elect new Directors to the governing Board and its Executive. The Mission Chamber is governed by the federal Board of Trade Act under the authority of Industry Canada. Spring is the month for renewal and what better way to renew than to elect a new Chamber Board of Directors! Please join us on Thursday March 17th at our regular luncheon time at the Best Western to celebrate the end of one Chamber year and the beginning of another. Your Chamber board has been very busy putting the final touches on our new strategic plan that will be unveiled at this years AGM. We have been very busy planning some great events for the coming year including our China Trip in October, monthly Business After Hours events, great educational seminars and our Annual golf event in May. We are very excited to offer a new “Night Golf” networking event in September for those looking for a different experience! Did you know that our membership is compromised of approximately 10% non profit organizations? A new British Columbia Societies Act received Royal Assent on May 14, 2015 and will come into place when the new legislation is passed. Non-profit society boards will need to understand the new

realities of their reporting requirements which include but are not limited to majority of independent directors, reporting on director and top 10 employee and contractor remuneration, reporting on financial assistance given by societies, and electronic filing opportunities. It is very important to understand the Society Act as it provides rules for incorporation and governance of approximately 27,000 societies in British Columbia. The Chamber is pleased to be offering an Education Workshop for Non Profit Boards. The purpose of this training is to provide an interactive and handson learning experience for non-profit boards and executive directors in order for them to carry out their work with excellence and in line with best board practices. Our workshop will be held on Tuesday April 26 from 7am until noon (Breakfast included). You can register online for this workshop and space is limited! As this is my last newsletter as the President of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce I would like

Spotlight on Business: Big-city expertise with a Fraser Valley heart: Bajpai Law Corporation Kathleen Rake

CLICK MEDIA WORKS

Bajpai Law Corporation, with its office in historic downtown Abbotsford, is where Mission resident and lawyer Vishal Bajpai sees his clients. A graduate of University of Victoria, Bajpai was called to the Bar of British Columbia in July, 2005. He articled at Shook Wickham Bishop & Field (SWB&F) in Campbell River, where he worked primarily personal injury cases under the mentorship of Sidney S. Shook, QC. “I’ve worked corporate law in the big city, where I researched and litigated a number of complex, obscure cases and successfully argued for high-profile corporate clients,” explained Bajpai. “My clients here in the Fraser Valley benefit from that experience

because they get what some call bigcity expertise, but they don’t have to suffer the costs of big-city overhead, which I would have to pass on to recover.” Bajpai has worked cases heard in the Provincial, Federal, and Supreme courts, as well as before the Human Rights Tribunal and Residential Tenancy Branch. Early in his career, he appeared on behalf of the Federal Crown on several occasions and argued for ICBC. After leaving SWB&F, Bajpai practised corporate law, first at a Maple Ridge law firm, and later at a downtown Vancouver law firm, where he concentrated on securities law. Today, in addition to corporate and real estate work, Bajpai’s practice includes personal injury litigation, intellectual property and family law.

"I also enjoy drop-in notarization as it allows me to connect with more people." “One of the best things about my work,” shared Bajpai, “is knowing that I really am helping people. I’ll never forget the time I received a thank-you card from a client whose case was turned away by several lawyers; Thank you for believing in me, it said.” Bajpai typically sees clients by appointment in his office, but when possible, he works flexible hours to accommodate clients’ special circumstances. Bajpai Law Corporation is at Suite 1 – 33775 Essendene Ave., Abbotsford. Contact Bajpai at (604) 746-2972 or reception@bajpai. ca. Visit www.Bajpai.ca for more information.

GROWTH IN MISSION

BusinessTRACK

A Growing Technology Hub When you think of Mission does high tech spring to mind? More and more, it should. The Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec) runs a thriving Technology Centre of Excellence (TCE) and tech-focused venture accelerator right in the heart of downtown Mission, and its bringing tech businesses and entrepreneurs to our community to launch and grow their businesses. Greenhouse Games, Tech Mist and MyGreen Space are some of the recent successes grown out of this exciting project. Why Mission? Due to the lower cost of living, costs of doing business, and the growing network of experienced tech professionals involved in SRCTec, provides the right mix for anyone looking to launch a tech venture and finding success.

Consider this, for a couple working and living in Vancouver, Mount Pleasant, the expenses each month for paying for their home, transportation, utilities and taxes leave them $2,500 behind that same couple in Mission. For entrepreneurs looking to spend their time and money on growing a business, Mission simply makes sense. The combined programs and services offered through SRCTec and the Technology Venture Accelerator (VAP) operated out of the Tech Centre of Excellence in Mission means entrepreneurs developing new technology businesses have access to world-class skill development, mentorship, funding and connections to experienced leaders in the tech community. SRCTec is a non-profit organization that is making waves in the tech sector with advocating, educating and giving tech-based entrepreneurs the best tools and resources to establish roots in our budding community.

&+,1$

SRCTec offers programs to help accelerate tech businesses, educational workshops to enhance skills, membership to promote networking and the Technology Centre of Excellence which includes a variety of services to help tech entrepreneurs succeed in Mission. SRCTec has also partnered with the District of Mission to launch Tech Starts Here, a campaign to recruit and retain tech focused businesses. Together, our municipality and SRCTec are committed to fostering technology-led innovation, jobs growth, and education for the region. There are a lot of exciting plans in the works that will put a mark on Mission, making it the place to do business. For more information on the programs and services SRCTec offers to tech entrepreneurs, upcoming events and news please visit www.srctec.org or contact us at info@srctec.org. Safety Tip: The start of Daylight Savings Time means darker morning commutes for the next few weeks. Now is the time to pay extra attention to vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians as visibility may be very limited.

Verdict At first glance, the Dune might seem merely a silly styling exercise but on further inspection, it is an alternative to a regular Beetle and at no extra cost. The Dune is based on the Comfortline Beetle, yet it comes equipped with many additional features for $27,000. The Comfortline would need to be equipped with two additional packages and that would actually bring the price higher than the Dune. So, the Dune doesn’t cost more than a nicely equipped Beetle. After a while the idea sank in. The Beetle is for someone that wants to drive something different and the Dune takes that idea as step forward. The only complaints that I have is the fact that VW Canada, unlike the US division, will not offer a convertible

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, June Alsbury on Friday February 26, 2016. Mom passed away on the one year anniversary of Dad’s memorial. They were lovebirds and best friends, married for 62 years. With her passing, Dad will get his angel back. Mom leaves to mourn, daughters Ruth Withers (Rick), Carol Siemens (Mark), Ann Klassen (Matt) and son, Michael Alsbury and precious grandchildren Kelly (Gail), Tyler, Allison (Andy), Jennifer (Shahab), Morgan and great grandsons, Wyatt and Riley. She also leaves her dear sisters, Leone Rose and sister-in-law, Diane Wiesner and nieces and nephews. Mom was an excellent homemaker who always welcomed family and friends. Her house was filled with love and laughter. She had a wonderful sense of humour. Mom had a zest for life and most of all loved being active. She skied, played tennis, sailed and took part in many “fun runs”. She was an accomplished dancer and as a couple, she and Dad spent most weekends dancing with a group of very special friends. Mom was also a talented watercolor artist, belonging to the Fraser Valley Watercolor Society for a number of years. Please join us on Sunday, June 5th at 1:00 PM at the Old Clayburn Schoolhouse 4315 Wright Street, Clayburn Village, Abbotsford, BC.
