Cranbrook has new CAO

FOR THE TOWNSMAN

The City of Cranbrook has officially announced the appointment of David Kim as the new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). The announcement concludes the search for the replacement of outgoing CAO Wayne Staudt, who retires on March 24 after being with the City since 2002, both as Director of Finance and CAO. “There were a large number of applicants for the CAO position and a series of interviews were conducted with some excellent candidates,” Mayor Lee Pratt said. “As a result of these interviews conducted by Mayor and Council, David Kim was the unanimous choice. We are pleased that David has accepted the position.”

Social media alive with false rumours TO W N S M A N S TA F F / R C M P

Facebook and other social media are swirling with false rumours that a young man injured in a tragic car accident last week has died of his injuries. Cranbrook RCMP took the step of issuing a press release to stop the spread of these rumours, which are causing great distress to the family.

Two other young men were killed in the accident early Friday, March 4, on Gold Creek Road. “Please be advised that the third male who had been travelling as a passenger in the 1985 pickup truck is NOT deceased,” RCMP said. “The Cranbrook RCMP and the East Kootenay Traffic Services Unit have received telephone calls from

the family of this third teenager, advising that social media is alive with rumors of their son’s death. These rumors are completely untrue. The 18-year-old is alive and being treated for serious but not life threatening injuries in Calgary hospital. “The family asks for their privacy and an end to these rumors which they find very upsetting.”

East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH) announced the appointment of Cassandra Schwarz as its new Executive Director. Ms. Schwarz brings several years’ experience in fundraising, non-profit leadership and community service to the role. Ms. Schwarz most recently served as the Admissions & Development Coordinator for the Aberdeen Hall Preparatory School as lead for donor stewardship and engagement and the coordination of the organization’s annual and capital campaigns. Wes Rogers, Chair of

EKFH said, “We are very excited that Cassandra will serve as EKFH’s next Executive Director.”

Woman sentenced on manslaughter, arson charges Townsman Staff Daily Townsman

Claudia De Assumpcao was senteneced on manslaughter and arson charges in Cranbrook Supreme Court on Thursday for her role in the death of a Marysville man in 2013.

A Brazilian woman has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for her role in the death of a Marysville man in March, 2013. Claudia de Assumpcao was sentenced on charges of arson and manslaughter for her role in the death of Jordon Lomsnes by Justice Terrence Schultes in Cranbrook Supreme Court. Lomsnes died of carbon monoxide poisoning from smoke inhalation that came from a fire outside his bedroom. De Assumpcao started the fire after an argument between the two as a way of lashing out against Lomsnes by damaging his property, which she believed he valued more than her. De Assumpcao, 41, has been in custody since her arrest the day after the incident on March 7, 2013 and pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson charges last year. She was given a pre-trial credit of four years, six months and six days of time served for the manslaughter charge and sentenced concurrently to one day for the arson charge.

At about 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning, Cranbrook RCMP received a call to a motor vehicle accident on King Street between a snowplow and a pickup truck. According to RCMP about seven kilometres

down King Street, northwest of Cranbrook. The pickup was travelling on snow covered, slushy roads and as he moved over to avoid an oncoming snowplow he began to fishtail into oncoming traffic. The driver of the

2016 TUNDRA 4X4

snowplow attempted to lift the blade of the plow in order to avoid the truck, but the blade hit just behind the driver’s seat of the pickup and embedded itself into the wall of the cab. The 18-year-old driver of the pickup received minor injuries.

Although Cranbrook has seen unusually warm mild days, the RCMP is reminding drivers that we are still in the winter season and the weather can change quickly. Cranbrook RCMP is also reminding drivers to drive to the road conditions.

For the Townsman

A middle-aged man is preying on the kindness of Cranbrook residents. On March 9, Cranbrook RCMP were approached by a citizen who advised he was scammed out of $50. A man had approached him near the Cranbrook Mall saying he had just come to Cranbrook by ambulance and needed money in order to get back home.

of the couple’s bedroom into a room in the basement as she worked towards obtaining sponsorship to become a permanent resident of Canada. On the evening of March 7, 2013, Lomsnes had been drinking with a friend in a outbuilding beside his house before having a verbal argument with De Assumpcao in the kitchen. Lomsnes went to bed lightly intoxicated and De Assumpcao stared a fire in the hallway outside the door using gas from a jerry can. De Assumpcao left the house and waited outside, expecting Lomsnes to emerge soon afterwards. The next day, De Assumpcao met with a social worker at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, who called RCMP after their conversation. Justice Schultes noted that aggravating factors included starting the fire right outside the bedroom and that he did not accept that she was targeting his possessions. Mitigating factors included it being a first-time offence, her relative youth, her guilty plea, and expressions of remorse for her actions.

Snowplow hits truck on King St. For the Townsman

Without the credit of pre-trial time served, the manslaughter sentence is seven years and the arson sentence is two years to be served concurrently. Crown and defence counsel had presented their sentencing arguments in early February, with Justice Schultes delivering his decision on Thursday. Justice Schultes referred to a report from a psychiatrist that detailed De Assumpcao’s history of mental illness, including personality disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Major Depressive Disorder, severe anxiety and four suicide attempts in his report. However, he added that her mental health history didn’t excuse the moral culpability for her actions and took issue with an addendum to the report that noted she wasn’t a danger to anyone but herself. De Assumpcao and Lomsnes met over the Internet in 2012, with De Assumpcao moving in with him after spending a week together in Vancouver. The relationship soured after a year and De Assumpcao moved out

for 36 months APR

The concerned citizen handed over the $50 after the man said he would meet him a week later and pay him back. The Cranbrook citizen went to the allotted meeting point but the man never showed. Cranbrook RCMP would like to warn people to be more mindful when giving money to people they don’t know.

endar development has been a yearly process for the Board. The government legislates –to the minute—exactly how many hours of instruction they require and for which they will provide funding. These requirements are different for kindergarten, elementary, middle and secondary students. It is

CPR worker Walter Komar leaves his legacy with a gift to the Cranbrook History Centre Submit ted

Walter Komar was born in Brandon, Manitoba, on October 24th, 1929. He worked as a Canadian Pacific Railway locomotive engineer until he retired and would often state that the best times at the railroad were the days of the steam engines. Walter was a resident of Cranbrook and passed away on December 9th, 2013 at the age of 84. In 2015, the CAMAL Foundation received a donation of $47,000 from Komar’s estate. The majority of the gift is being used to leverage grant funding for much needed projects, such

as the new Freight Shed Roof and the future Paleontology Gallery and Research Lab. A lump sum of $10,000 has gone towards the establishment of the Cranbrook History Centre Endowment Fund, which will be managed by the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation. “The CAMAL Foundation would like to extend our gratitude to the estate of Walter Komar for fulfilling his bequest wishes of a donation to the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel,” said Char Murray, Executive Director and Curator of the Cranbrook History Centre. “We are

honoured to be a part of Mr. Komar’s legacy, and will work hard to ensure his gift will have a positive impact on the lives of Cranbrook residents and visitors to the Cranbrook History Centre. We are also very committed to growing our endowment fund, which will help ensure a sustainable, vibrant future for the Cranbrook History Centre.” A framed commemorative picture has been placed in the Royal Alexandra Hall entrance to honour Walter’s memory and donation.

Neither rain nor snow, etc, will stop the Bigfoot Running Club from their appointed rounds. Pictured here, runners at the start of the March Forth Food Bank Prediction Run 2016. This fun event is a timed event, where you “predict” your finish time and whomever is closest to their predicted time wins. Up next for the club is the Loop and Soup, set for April 17 at Eager Hill. There is a choice of one or two laps of the five kilometre course on the Eager Hill trail systems. Walking one loop is also an option. Bring your own mug and spoon for some delicious soup afterwards. Registration is at 9:30 a.m., the race starts at 10 a.m. Entry is five dollars for members, 10 dollars for non-members. More information available at bigfootrunning.ca

Fines increasing for forest fire violations Tom Fletcher Black Press

The pilot of a recreational drone that forced waterbombers from smoke-filled skies around Oliver last summer was never located, but future offenders who impede forest firefight-

ers will face higher fines. Fines for 19 offences under the Wildfire Act, including interfering with wildfire protection efforts, are being increased to among the highest in Canada, Forests Minister Steve Thomson said Thurs-

day. The fine for failing to comply with fire restrictions such as campfire bans will increase from $345 to $1,150. A new penalty of failing to comply with a stop-work order made because of fire risk will carry a max-

imum penalty of $100,000 and one year in prison. Thomson said there are “constitutional” issues with a proposal to seize vehicles from people who toss cigarette butts out the window while driving, but the

Five Lessons of Good Friday T his year, Christians from different churches in Cranbrook will participate in our 12th annual Good Friday CrossWalk. We will walk through the city, stopping to pray for our city and all its citizens. I’ll have more to say about that next week. This week, I want to think about why we mark the suffering and death of Jesus. Why bother with something which is so far removed from our everyday lives? What relevance does this story of Jesus’ crucifixion have for us? I can’t count the number of people who, from time to time, have said to me, “Why do you worship a God who dies?” Let me suggest five elements to consider as part of the meaning of this Friday which we call Good. First, physical suffering is part of life. Above all else, the cross tells us that suffering is real. As a fully human person, Jesus suffered. On Good Friday, he was beaten, tortured and then nailed to a cross. In terms of the cross, the Roman authorities of the day used crucifixion as capital punishment. They made an example of enemies of the state. Crucifixion is one of the most agonizing ways human beings have ever devised to put someone to death. Victims of crucifixion usually died from asphyxiation as the weight of their bodies pulled on their wrists, compressed their lungs and made breathing impossible. Suffering is part of our lives, and much too often, that suffering comes at the hands of other human beings. Christian faith is intensely realistic about the suffer-

ing that is so often a part of life. Life is marked by loss and pain, even if that’s not all there is. Secondly, this suffering is not just physical, but also emotional. On the cross, Jesus felt a deep sense of abandonment. His friends left him. Peter, one of his closest friends, denied ever knowing him. He even cried out that God had abandoned him. He was all alone. Thirdly, suffering is not the result of sin. Much too Rev. Yme often, televangelists and Woensdregt preachers are far too happy to say that suffering comes because we are making immoral decisions. Pat Robertson, for example is happy to say that hurricanes and tsunamis are God’s punishment for human sin. Not so. On the cross, Jesus is not being “punished for his sins.” Before his death, Jesus taught us that suffering is not punishment for sin. Too often, we react, “What did I ever do to deserve this?” The same attitude could be found among the ancients. In John 9, Jesus meets a man who was born blind. The first question from the disciples is, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered bluntly, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned.” Suffering happens. It’s part of life. We see it in nature. We see it in human nature. Fourthly, the cross shows us that Jesus is fully human. Too many people think that Jesus was really divine; therefore he knew that the cross wasn’t really the end. (By the way, if you think that this somehow lessens the suffering, think of being

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

in a dentist’s chair: knowing it will soon be over does not remove the pain.) Sometimes I call this the “Superman Phenomenon”: that is, people think that Jesus was mainly divine, aka Superman; Clark Kent is just a simple disguise. He’s not really in pain. He doesn’t really hurt. But that’s not so. Jesus was fully human. And in the drama leading up to his crucifixion, we see Jesus’ humanity on full display. He prays that God might “take this cup away from me”—in other words, I don’t want to die. (The scene in Jesus Christ Superstar portrays this magnificently!) Even so, Jesus chose to trust God even in the midst of this deep suffering. He is taken by the Romans, and even though he experiences the absence of God deeply and profoundly, at the end he commends himself to God’s care. Fifthly, death is not the end. Suffering is not the last word. The church affirms that this story is not just the story of a man being brutally tortured, nailed to a cross, and executed as a political prisoner by the Romans. This is the story of a man who, even in the midst of such great suffering, was able to trust God completely. The story ends in resurrection, in God’s great gift of life made new and whole and abundant. This is why we call this day of darkness “good”. What happened on the day isn’t good. Not at all. But Good Friday is not the final day. Good Friday is the penultimate day, and therefore it is made holy by what followed on the day of resurrection. “C

ranbrook Beer Proves a Nectar Fit for the Gods. The first product of the Cranbrook Brewing and Malting company was placed on the market Monday last, and while the public were hoping for the best no one expected the superior article served up to them at the hotel bars. The liquid is of a beautiful amber tint, clear as crystal and pleasant to the taste and in the opinion of connoisseurs is equal to any beer on the market, not excepting the famous product of Milwaukee.” So spake the Cranbrook Herald newspaper of August 11, 1904. High words of praise, although the newspaper praised just about everything in Cranbrook in those days, the better to attract business. Of course, being newspapermen they probably knew their beer pretty well. In fact, a great many people knew their beer pretty well, what with typhoid making regular rounds thanks to the often polluted water. Beer was a cheap and reasonably safe beverage. In those days every town worth its salt had a brewery: Fort Steele, Moyie, Nelson, Rossland, Fernie, and Trail, for instance. Cranbrook was notably absent from the list. It’s not that Cranbrook didn’t have beer. Cranbrook always had beer. One of the first business enterprises in town was a liquor store. And the hotels, of course; every hotel had a pub and every pub had beer. In August, 1898, Joe Mitchell of the poetically named Drewry Brewery of Winnipeg arrived in Cranbrook to break ground for a wholesale liquor warehouse on Durick (7th) Avenue, filling the cellar with Redwood Brewing Company ales, porters, lagers and aerated waters. Mr. Kaiser who, with partner Mr. Sick, ran the Fort Steele Brewing Co., paid tri-weekly visits to Cranbrook to sell their product. That is, until the following year

ONGOING

An advertisement from the Herald – Oct.13, 1904 when Kaiser took sick and Sick, who wasn’t, took over his shares in the company and was joined shortly thereafter by Mr. Mutz. Sick and Mutz moved their brewery to Fernie where it remained in business into the 1930s. In the tradition of brewers with one-syllable names, Messrs. Blue and Dias of the Red Lion Brewery of Rossland arrived in 1900 to establish a cold storage plant in association with James Kerrigan, manager of the local East Kootenay Bottling Co. By then a number of leading Cranbrook citizens, including John and Jake Fink (Cranbrook mayor 1908-1910) had purchased the New York Brewery of Spokane for something in the order of $150– 200,000, and it is likely that their product was filling Cranbrook tankards. It seems that it took the appearance of Carl Band of the Kaslo Brewing Co., and formerly of the New York Brewery of Spokane, to truly spark the local liquid flames. He hit the city in late December, 1903, had a good look around, gave a thumbs up, approached a few leading citizens — hotel owners James Ryan, L.B. VanDecar, Joseph Brault, and Vic Rollins among others — and immediately formed a company to construct a local brewery with a capacity of 30 barrels a day to be built somewhere to the north of town near Joseph Creek.

Construction began almost immediately although not on the site originally proposed but rather in the neighbouring community of Slaterville. There is little information concerning the exact location of the brewery. According to Dave Kay and D.A. McDonald, authors of a local history column many years ago, it was “… in Slaterville on what is now Third St. W., back of the old Spence home … close to the hill.” So, too, there is little known of the design of the brewery. One of the buildings was at least 18 feet high because that is the distance that Carl Band plunged on January 5, 1904, landing head first on the frozen ground. He was helping the carpenters on the roof when he slipped while attempting to grab some loose shingles during a sudden high wind. He seemed fine following the fall, asking for only a wagon ride to his room at the Cranbrook Hotel. He was later taken to the St. Eugene hospital where he lingered through the night, died the next morning of what seems have been a severe concussion and was buried in the Old General Cemetery. For whatever reasons; perhaps common sense given the time of year, but more likely to take the necessary time to find another brewmaster, work was suspended on the project until early February. At that point,

Fred Geiler, a brewer of long experience, arrived to spearhead the project. As construction renewed, Mr. Geiler, now a large stockholder in the company, travelled to Vancouver to purchase the necessary brewing equipment with a capital authorization of $25,000. The company, now including Frank Clapp and local wholesale liquor merchants Alex McDermot and Aulder Bowness (Cranbrook mayor 1912-13 and 1915), expected to open for business in May but it took until mid-June to start the first brew and August until “the beer that will make Cranbrook famous” made its debut. The brewery’s capacity was 60 barrels per day with storage for 800 barrels to allow for up to six months aging and was brewed from fresh spring water taken from the Baker estate. The first annual shareholder meeting of the Cranbrook Brewing and Malting Co. was held in March, 1905, with all reports showing a profit “far beyond expectations.” Perhaps not, for in February, 1906, the brewery was put up for public auction to meet mortgage payments. It was purchased by the aforementioned Mr. Mutz and, despite his pledge of continuing the operation, appears to have shut down shortly thereafter; such was the rather short shelf-life of Cranbrook’s first brewery.

It’s a bittersweet time for Kootenay Ice captain Tanner Lishchynsky. On one hand, the 21-year-old native of Saskatoon has had the best season of his junior hockey career, tallying career highs in games played (55), goals (seven), assists (13) and points (20). On the other, his Kootenay Ice squad faces the reality of missing out on the Western Hockey League post-season for the first time since its arrival in Cranbrook. “A lot of ups and downs, obviously,” Lishchynsky said Thursday afternoon prior to practice at Western Financial Place. “I was happy to be named captain and try to help lead these guys. It’s been tough things to go through, but a good thing to go through in life. “It was a lot of learning this year, but I was happy to do it, happy to lead these guys and it was fun all around.” The learning isn’t quite over yet with five games remaining on the regular-season schedule and though Lishchynsky and the Ice won’t see the WHL post-season, they’re treating the final seven-game stretch as a their own personal playoff series. “We’ve broken our whole season down into

seven-game segments and haven’t had a lot of success with it, but we really talked about putting the emphasis on these seven as a playoff series and trying to do what we can to win it,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice, Thursday afternoon. “I know [Wyatt Hoflin] and Lish, that’s what they’ve talked about. They just want to put that in their own minds — this is a playoff series because they’re not going to be in one. “You just want to finish your year off as positive as you can so you head into your off-season feeling good about coming back. There’s still a lot of work to do.” The first two games of Kootenay’s personal playoff series didn’t go exactly to plan, as injuries derailed the club, resulting in losses at Saskatoon and at home to Lethbridge. Trailing 2-0 in the best-of-seven series, the Ice refuse to quit. After all, a best-of-seven series isn’t won or lost in the first two games and with a leader like Lishchynsky, quitting simply isn’t an option. “My work ethic is a big part, I never gave up,” Lishchynsky said. “We want to try to win as much as we can. If we can win at least two of the last three, that would be a pretty happy

goal for me.” Ever the loyal soldier, Lishchynsky has arguably saved his best hockey for last. Since being named the 20th captain in Kootenay Ice franchise history on Jan. 12, the 6-foot-1, 182-pound defenceman has elevated his play with the elevated responsibility of leading a young club. “It’s obviously a very challenging time for him, being a 20-year-old you always want to finish your career off on a high note,” Pierce said. “The way our season has gone, it’s obviously been frustrating for him, but he’s handled it with class. He’s been a role model for our guys for sure and been a very vocal guy. “His play took a giant leap forward in the time since we named him

captain. He should have a ton of confidence continuing on his career.” Offensively, six of Lishchynsky’s career-high seven goals and 11 of his career-high 20 points have come in 24 games since being named captain. Lishchynsky will look to continue that trend as the Ice (10-51-6-0) will look to even their personal playoff series this weekend when they take on the Medicine Hat Tigers (27-35-3-2) in a home-and-home series beginning Friday (7:30 p.m.) in southern Alberta. Following Friday’s festivities in Medicine Hat, the Ice and Tigers trek back across the border for a Saturday night contest (7 p.m.) at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook.

Dolphins sign RB C.J. Anderson to offer sheet Ste ven Wine Associated Press

MIAMI - Now that C.J. Anderson’s a Super Bowl-winning running back, the Miami Dolphins want to give him the ball. The restricted free agent signed an $18 million, four-year offer sheet Thursday with the Miami Dolphins, a person familiar with the situation said. The person confirmed the offer to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins have not commented. Anderson rushed for 720 yards last year for

the NFL champion Denver Broncos, who have five days to match the offer. They’re considered unlikely to do so. New Dolphins coach Adam Gase needs a replacement for running back Lamar Miller, who signed a free agent deal with Houston. Gase was offensive co-ordinator for the Broncos and Anderson in 2013-14. Anderson, undrafted out of Cal in 2013, rushed for 90 yards and one touchdown in the Broncos’ 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl. He chose Miami to make

his first free agent visit. So far this week the Dolphins have added defensive end Mario Williams, cornerback Byron Maxwell, linebacker Kiko Alonso, safety Isa Abdul-Quddus and tackle Sam Young. In addition to Miller, they lost defensive end Olivier Vernon, cornerback Brent Grimes and receiver Rishard Matthews. Maxwell said he passed two physicals before the trade that sent him and Alonso to Miami from the Philadelphia Eagles was finalized. Maxwell missed the

final two games last season with a shoulder sprain, and he acknowledged his health was a concern before the Dolphins approved the deal. “The issue was the physical,” he said. “Everything is good now. I passed physicals both with Miami and Philadelphia, so I’m ready to go.” As if to underscore his point, Maxwell was 15 minutes late for a conference call with reporters because he was working out.

Left to right: Coach Bill Watson, Carter Bannink, Austin Flowers and Ty Kolbeck. For The Townsman

The Cranbrook Eagles Boxing Club returned home from competition in Hamilton, Mont., Feb. 27, with boxer Carter Bannink, Ty Kolbeck and Austin Flowers putting forth admirable efforts. Entering the ring for his first fight, the 17-yearold Flowers stepped up to the senior division and took on a 22-yearold opponent from the Polsen Boxing Club. The Polsen boxer came out swinging, trying to score an early

knockout, but the slick-moving Flowers used his footwork and counter punching to survive the first round against his aggressive opponent. Round two saw the Polsen boxer again come out swinging, trying to put Flowers away, but the Cranbrook boxer responded with good defense and counters. Halfway through, Flowers took control over his opponent thanks to superior boxing skills and conditioning. Round three was all

Flowers as he dominated his bigger, older opponent. In the end, Flowers won a well earned unanimous decision. Novice boxers Bannink and Kolbeck each stepped into the ring with Electric City (Great Falls, Mont.) boxers and lost close, hard-fought decisions. For Kolbeck the most experienced of the two, with five previous matches under his belt, it was a toe-to-toe war for three rounds with his more experienced opponent.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Once more, a dream could spur you to action. You will see a situation evolve that might cause you to ask questions. Play the waiting game, and don’t squander someone’s spontaneity. This person’s impulsiveness defines him or her. Tonight: Meet a friend for TGIF. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might be hesitant to make a move, and could keep stalling. If you don’t take action, you won’t understand what possibilities are available to you. Try not to be so set in your ways. You’ll feel much better once you make a move. Tonight: Greet the weekend with a smile. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Zero in on what you want, and allow yourself to head in a special direction that a friend has suggested. You might be surprised by a parent’s or higher-up’s supportive advice. Once you achieve your objectives, you will mellow out. Tonight: Feel free to break patterns.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Others seem to observe your actions. Your mellowness and sense of security comes through in a situation where you normally would be reactive. You will see positive results later in the day. A friend or associate supports you and your actions. Tonight: Where the crowds are. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You have a desire to pull away from the traditional type of thinking. You might sense a need for a change of scenery. If you can, make last-minute plans to take off this weekend. Wherever you are, others seem to admire your choices and strength. Tonight: A force to behold. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You can try only so much to reach an understanding with a partner. You both have such different perspectives that you have difficulty identifying with each other. Without creating uproar, just accept where the other party’s head is. Tonight: Try out a new idea. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might want to pay atten-

tion to some last-minute details that come up. If they slip away from you, they could mess up a project at a later time. You can’t afford to let your guard down. A dear friend or partner becomes supportive and helpful. Tonight: With a special person. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Be willing to be challenged by an associate. This person might not grasp your imaginative plans, and likely won’t react the way you want. Allow others to ask more questions. As a result, you will see that a mutual agreement comes more easily. Tonight: Go with others’ suggestions. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might feel very content about a domestic or personal matter. This happiness radiates from you, and is likely to draw in many people. In the morning, you are far more likely to be met with agreement. Fatigue could become an issue. Tonight: Make sure you get enough exercise. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might want to spend the day at home. A conversation

with a loved one delights you, plus it gives you a lot to consider. Make plans that are fun, and don’t get hung up on what you should do. A child could delight you with his or her silliness. Tonight: Act like you feel. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Don’t hesitate to speak your mind, but don’t make any commitments. Allow yourself some wiggle room to explore your ideas. Spend time close to home or at home in the afternoon. You need that time to center yourself. Tonight: Invite others over to your place for a get-together. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) No one doubts your creativity. The ideas that pop up today might seem fabulous, but are they workable? Be careful about investing in any wild ideas at the present moment. In the late afternoon, test out some of your ideas on a dear friend. Tonight: Out at a favorite spot. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar

Dear Annie: My son is 36 years old and was raised in a Christian home. However, twice in the last two months, he has posted pictures on Facebook of women being hit by men. The first was a cartoon, and he posted it on his teenage daughter’s page. I sent him a message asking if he thought it was a good idea to tell his daughter that it is OK to be hit. He removed the post, but there was no explanation or apology. Then last week, he posted a video of a man doing a parody of a kung fu fighter kicking a woman in the head. Because they played a rock song in the background, you are supposed to think that it is funny. I told my son it was inappropriate. His wife made excuses, saying it was not intended to be mean. Am I out of line telling him that it is inappropriate to post such things? -- A Mother Dear Mother: Your son is a grown man, and he gets to post what he likes on his Facebook page. If others find these images objectionable, they can tell him so. Expecting him to “listen to his mother” is probably not going to get you anywhere, and may end up with you being blocked from his page. You have registered your complaint. He knows how you feel and why. We hope his wife and daughter will likewise tell him that these pictures are offensive and inappropriate. Other than that, Mom, leave it alone. Dear Annie: This is in response to “A Frustrated South Dakotan,” who has epilepsy. My son was just diagnosed with epilepsy, and I am sure I could rival his mother in my overprotective nature. I knew keeping my very active, football playing, skiing, social, 11-year-old under my thumb would never work, so I started researching. There are two smart wristwatches available (Embrace and Smart Monitor Smart Watch) that will send an alert to whomever you choose in the event of a seizure. Both have several features that will make it safe for “Frustrated” to go out on his own and will alert his mother if he has a seizure. You recommended The Epilepsy Foundation, and readers should know that it also has support groups for parents of people with epilepsy. And a quick search on the Internet can provide great ideas to enable those with epilepsy to still do all that they love, but safely. Our son has a harness that he hooks on to the ski lift. We let everyone know that he has epilepsy and they help us out, too. He has a great life, and I have peace of mind. Good luck to both “Frustrated” and his mom. Epilepsy isn’t an easy thing to live with, but it is possible to live well. -- Mom of an Active Son Dear Mom: Thank you for the helpful and upbeat letter. We received many informative letters from our readers who have experience with epilepsy, and we will be printing more in future columns. In 1923, Andrew and Jeanie Aitchison emigrated from Paisley, Scotland to join their extended family in Didsbury, Alberta. They brought with them their two year old son Hugh Aitchison. Later they moved from the farm to Calgary, where Hugh received his education. Hugh was a cadet for the RCN. When he reached age of acceptance he became an active member of the RCN. He became a Petty Officer. When re-entering civilian life, he worked for Dominion Bridge. The workers went on strike and Hugh needed a job and found one in Trail, BC. He signed up as a worker for CM & S Company. The company expanded and built a fertilizer and steel plant in Kimberley, BC. Hugh was transferred by the company to Kimberley, where he worked as a shift boss, first aid attendant. And, upon retirement he was the Assistant to the Fire Chief of Cominco. When he was in Trail he met Betty and this is where they began a long life together. Hugh and Betty were married in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Hugh was the father to two sons; Laurie (Anne) and Lennie (deceased), he also had a daughter; Vicki (Peter). He also was a proud ‘papa Hughie’ to Cassie (Rory), Lucy and Isabel, and two little g.g.’s; Elora and Ewen. Hughie’s family loved him and thank him for a life long-lived. It is fitting to quote Rabbi Burns; A Man’s a Man for a’ that. Hughie enjoyed his many years of retirement, his family, friends and his home. He also enjoyed playing golf, and gardening. Hugh was able to see many places by plane, car and train. Hughie also supported Betty in her many endeavours. With the comforting support of Home Care, Hugh died quietly in his home on March 1st, 2016. There will be a celebration for Hugh’s life sometime later in the summer. Donations in honour of Hugh can be made to the: East Kootenay S.P.C.A., PO Box 2, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 4H6. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Obituaries Bob Hockley 1929 - 2016 With full hearts, the Hockley family announces the passing of Bob Hockley on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 in Calgary with his family at his side.

He is survived by his loving wife Lolly, children Dennis (Aldie) Hockley, Louise (Lorne) Derkach, Debra (Ron) Omelusik, Myrna (Lorne) Bailey, Sharon (Al) Nuspl and Kevin (Brenda) Hockley and many, many grandchildren. Born in Fernie, February 17, 1929, the Kootenays were always his home. It was in Fernie where he met the love of his life, Lolly. They shared 65 years together. Bob’s exuberance for life was contagious; he was always telling jokes and teasing those around him. Bob was always an active member in the community, as a businessman and volunteer. He enjoyed watching and participating in sports, especially hockey and ball. As a pitcher, he won gold in the BC Seniors’ Games and just last year he pitched in the annual 5 Generation Hockley Family ball game. Above all things, Bob was a family man. He loved spending time with his wife, kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and great-great grandkids. Come honor his memory on Monday, March 14, at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in, Cranbrook, BC. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29th Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at www.mcphersonfh.com

Community Newspapers We’re at the heart of things™ Kyle Bruce On March 2, 2016, Kyle Patrick Bruce passed away suddenly at the age of 34. Born a bubbly blueeyed baby boy, Kyle was adventurous and funny, capable of keeping everyone from colleagues to neighborhood children entertained with his antics. With a natural tendency to mentor his family and friends, especially those who were considered ‘underdogs,’ Kyle had a unique life perspective.

Dear Hopeful: Thank you so much for your nice comments they are much appreciated. Unfortunately, some people don’t like our honesty when they ask their questions in some of my columns and sessions. Unfortunately, they want us to answer them with the answers they want to hear not what will help them grow spiritually. To tell someone what they want to hear does not give them hope it gives them pain and suffering. The reason why it does this is beASK WENDY cause when the truth or the reality of the Wendy situation has come to Evano pass they are not at all prepared or warned of what to expect or what to do. This then causes anxiety, pain and a lot of misery in their lives. It’s important that we all live and try to be as honest and kind as we can to ourselves and those around us. Yes, I think I may be able to help you and give you a few pointers on how to have an angelic prayer session. First it’s important to relax and get comfortable perhaps light a special white candle when you pray to the angels. If you want to have more money coming into your home or life then you always light a green candle as well. Always have a bowl of fresh water beside your candles and then throw the water away after your prayer session. Now you are ready to make angelic contact and here is the words and prayer that will help you do this. You say, “We ask God to send the Virtues (which is the 9th level of angels) to help us with our prayers tonight to make angel contact. And we ask the virtues as we pray to help us clearly see and communicate with our highest angels.” Sit and pray on that for a moment. Now say this prayer 3 times: ESP Angel by my fingertips, I feel your touch on my eyes and lips, Come even closer let me see, Your brilliance in God’s majesty. Have an attitude that the angels will come to you and you will either see or feel them when they are in your presence. Know that we do not pray to or worship the angels. The angel’s purpose is to enact God’s will, which is peace on earth. This means when you want to make angelic contact you always say, “I ask God to send his angels to me to help me with my prayer session tonight.” Or “I ask God to send his angels to (state the person’s name) to help him or her with (state what you want God’s angels to help that person with.} Then see the angels flying to that person’s place of residence or wherever their location may be at the time of your prayer for them. God and his angels cannot intervene into our lives without our permission. The reason why is because God gave us free will when we came down to this plane. This means we must ask for help before they can assist us. It doesn’t matter how you ask for the help you require, but only that you do. For example: If you don’t know what to ask for because you are confused then simply say, “I ask God to send his angels to help me be at peace.” For when you are mentally at peace you can handle any situation or learning lesson on this plane. Never tell God and the angels how to fix a situation you are in. And don’t waste your time or energy worrying about how heaven will help you. Your job is only to ask for help and then follow the guidance sent to you without arguing or second guessing the information; it’s called having faith. Which no matter who we are on this plane we just don’t have enough of at times in our life. So faith when times are very hard in our lives can be very difficult to master or to have. But we as humans know in our hearts that without faith or hope then what do we really have? Stay in the truth, and keep the faith in these prayer sessions and I think you will be surprised with the results. You have 5 angels and 8 guides around you at this time. If you are interested you may phone me and put your name down for the prayer sessions that will be in the summer. Good Luck! Wendy
