Ponoka and Maskwacis RCMP located the vehicle a short time later southbound on Highway 2. RIMBEY REVIEW 3

Rimbey town council highlights BY TREENA MIELKE Business walks presentation given Jackie Stratton, rural business network board member and representatives from Blackfalds and Clive met with council at its March 7 meeting to do a short presentation about the business visitation program taking place in Rimbey, Blackfalds and Clive this summer. The business walks are to be organized by the Regional Business Network in partnership with municipal staff and service providers. Volunteer walkers (teams of chamber and relevant board members, civic leaders and business support service providers) are assigned areas and will walk from business to business for approximately three hours. The objective of the walks is to identify successes and obstacles the local businss communities face within the Central Alberta region and track that information over time.

Municipal development plan gets green light Council gave the nod to a new municipal development plan which has been put together through consultation with adminstration, local developers and builders and town council. Resident input was gathered through the community survey conducted in 2015. Additionally, town residents were asked to present their feedback at the public hearing on Feb. 8. Border Paving to do street improvements The tender for street improvements has been given to Border Paving Ltd. for $493,989.25. Tender submissions were also received from Central City Asphalt Ltd., TBL Construction Ltd., Kantrax Contractors Ltd., Richardson Bros (Olds) Ltd. and Carmacks Enterprises Ltd. However, Border Paving’s submission came in the lowest and Tagish Engineer is confident the contractor is capable of completing the work. Border Paving plan to begin work June 1 and finish work by Sept. 1.

Caste-A-Waste awarded contracts Council accepted Caste-AWaste’s submission to continue as the town’s residential waste collector. CanPak Environmental Inc. and Progressive Waste Soluitions also submitted requests for proposals. Caste-A-Waste’s annual fee for waste collection is $65,520. Council agreed to include the condition in the contract that there would be no extra cost to the town if the alleys are closed due to snow and curb pick up is necessary. Council will not go to automated curb pick up this year. “Is there a $20,000 advantage to going curbside?” questionned Coun. Paul Payson. We would be increasing taxes to pay for this and I imagine there will be a few people not in favour.” Council also agreed to accept a contract by CastA-Waste Inc. for bi-weekly blue bag recycling collection and disposal for an annual cost of $38,400.

Development agreement with town is extended for two years for local developer BY TREENA MIELKE A development agreement between the town and a local developer, originally extended for a year, will stretch into another year. On Jan. 25 Steffen Olsen with Brix Construction Inc. requested the development agreement between Brix Construction and the town be extended for one year. At its March 7 meeting council agreed to extend the agreement until April 17, 2018. Acting CAO Donna Tona said it is common practice to extend development agreements during economic downturns. “It offers them a hand up and it doesn’t cost the town any money. It gives them an opportunity to take a breath (while things are slower).” Olsen said the development agreement is for an industrial parcel of land in the southeast corner of town.

Due to the economic downturn Alberta is now experiencing, interest is low in purchasing industrial land, he said. There were 25 develop-

Treena Mielke On The Other Side When I was a kid winter was longer than forever and we talked to each other without texting. When I was a kid there was no Facebook. No computers. No cell phones. A wall telephone was held in awe by those of us who were lucky enough to have one. And a handwritten letter – ahhh, that was a rare and wonderful gift. I remember my father getting these mysterious pale blue airmail letters from his native Scotland. It was a grand day when those letters arrived. My fa-

my tiptoes just so I could see over the top of the wicket, feeling all grown up and proud when he handed me our mail. The post office was kind of like the social hub of our community. It was a great place to meet, to catch up on the latest gossip and finally, when all was said and done, to come home with the proud announcement, “I got the mail.” When I travel down the hallowed halls of childhood memories, I seem to remember the post office also had its own peculiar smell, probably a combination of old wood and newspapers and mail and those big burlap gunnysacks the mail came in. I was thinking about that long ago post office today as I scrolled down the many entries on my Facebook timeline. I am not a Facebook fan and yet I am a closet user. I find myself reading all

the posts, the inspirational ones, the stupid ones and, accidentally, I even have found my little cursor hovering over the occasional post that is worth sharing. But, Facebook does serve another and more serious function. It keeps us in contact with family and friends who have somehow, almost, but not quite vanished from our lives. I think about my brother, who is completely cool and wears his Korean veteran hat at a jaunty angle with more than a touch of class, even though he is confined to a wheelchair and lives in a nursing home. Sometimes, his pale blue eyes seem far and distant and he talks about those long, lonely days in the service and how letters from home were his own personal key to survival. Can you imagine if he had Facebook? But still I wonder if

Facebook, for all its instantaneous capabilities, can ever replace the absolute delight of receiving a handwritten letter. How can you match the anticipation of breaking open a sealed envelope, smoothing out the pages of the letter inside and maybe sitting down with a cup of tea, as you read the pages. And finally, after going through that ritual you read news from home: the five-year old sitting on the writer’s knee, your brother who batted a homerun in the bottom of the ninth, and your sister who is off to a dance at the town hall with a group of young people. Another gift of the past to be remembered and cherished. And, perhaps, even though we now have Facebook and texting, one that will not be completely abandoned. I hope not!

Experiencing an individual test of human psychology

Jonah Kondro

Production:

ther had only reached the tender age of seven when he left his homeland. No doubt, his parents wanted a better life here in Canada for themselves and their family, but I believe my father, though I only knew the man for 15 short years, never forgot his Scottish roots. But whether it was an airmail letter, or a plain old handwritten letter in a plain old white envelope, snail mail was as much a part of my childhood as were visits with the owners who lived behind the general store and Sunday School every Sunday morning. If memory serves me correctly (which quite often it doesn’t), the post office was a little white clapboard building with the sign ‘Condor Post Office’ written over the door. Inside there were two wickets and the postmaster, a kindly old bachelor whom I think lived in the back, was always behind one of those wickets to hand out the mail. I remember standing on

One of the hardest tests of an individual’s psychology is how he or she behaves when encountering a solitary child. I was getting a takeout pizza from a pub in strip mall in Red Deer. The storefronts reflect-

ed my image as I walked past. My mind was set on a two-topping ten inch. It would put me in a sufficient nap like coma before I started a weekend shift working security at a pair of night clubs. I was thinking Italian sausage and ham when my gaze peered into a bank’s ATM vestibule. On the other side of the glass was a small boy sitting with his knees to his chest; he was absorbed in the screen of his mobile device. The boy’s clothing looked baggy on him: almost like he was wearing an older siblings hand me down clothes. His ball cap sunk down low enough to cover the tops of his ears. The boy looked up briefly from his device and our

eyes met momentarily. My mind shifted to Italian sausage and pepperoni—still hinged to the stream of consciousness I carried in the reflection of the storefronts. I ordered the pizza up at the bar; then my mind thought of the boy. The bank entrance was a curious place for any child to be sitting alone. I couldn’t recollect if I saw an adult standing up at the ATM. No there wasn’t. In my mind I became sure of that. It was just the boy on the other side of the glass sitting like an exhibit. The cheese on the pizza I had ordered was likely already melting when I thought I should have opened the door and asked, “hey kid, you alright?”

I began to reason. The middle school across the street was probably done class for the day. The kid was probably waiting for a parent, guardian, or sibling to come pick him up. The bank has lots of security cameras. That device he was looking into could have been a phone. If he needed, he probably could have phoned someone— anyone. I thought about how small he looked in those big clothes. I replayed my reasoning in my head a few times until the pizza I had ordered arrived. When I walked past the windows of the bank, the boy wasn’t there. I opened the lock to my sister’s house, no one was home yet at that hour in

the afternoon. My Italian sausage and pepperoni pizza was consumed in discomfort. A boy that small could be snatched up by a predator pretty quick. Over the next few days I turned up the volume in my car when the FM radio channels broke the stream of music for a news brief. I was listening to hear if any recent kidnappings had occurred. If there wasn’t any reporting, my thoughts certainly weren’t relieved; or if there was an abduction, my thoughts certainly wouldn’t be relieved either. No amount of reasoning can solve the equation in my head: should I or should I not have asked, “hey kid, you alright?”

You know pro wrestling is phony, right?

Stu Salkeld Pipestone Flyer Being a news junky, I read a lot of different newspapers and scan lots of different websites every week. One particular set of headlines bothered me last week. On the Yahoo Sports site the week of Feb. 22, the three top headlines were pro wrestling stories. Near as I could tell Yahoo Sports is a legitimate sports news site where factual information, such as final scores and injuries are supposed to be available. What’s pro wrestling doing on there? In fairness to Yahoo Sports, they aren’t the only ones who are obviously trying to profit off the popularity of pro wrestling. Even so, it’s very disturbing to see the number of people in the general population taking this stuff seriously. Even sportswriters who work for respected agencies treat this stuff like an actual sport, which of course it’s not. Even one of the top men in pro wrestling testified under oath pro wrestling is fixed, and nothing more than a soap opera. The owner/operator of the world’s biggest pro wrestling organization, World Wrestling Entertainment, stated on the record in 1989 that wrestling is fake. On Feb. 10, 1989 McMahon testified to the New Jersey Senate that pro wrestling was a scripted TV show in essence; McMahon, ever the savvy businessman, made the admission in order to dodge regulations and fees being placed on pro wrestling as a sport. Soap operas, for example, don’t have to have mandatory steroid testing. According to a story in TV Guide, McMahon’s wife Linda admitted in 2010 during a run for senate as a Republican that wrestling “isn’t real,” and pro wrestling is a “soap opera that entertains millions every week.” Pro wrestling is a soap opera, and it’s a business; in fact, some critics go so

far as to call it one of the sleaziest businesses in the entertainment world. Don’t agree with that? On May 23, 1999 pro wrestler Owen Hart fell to his death at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. Hart had recently taken on the identity of the “Blue Blazer,” a good-natured and bumbling super-hero character. It was later revealed Hart was supposed to be lowered from the arena’s rafters down to the wrestling ring, and when close enough was supposed to activate a “quick release” catch on the wires, dumping him in the ring. The general effect was supposed to make The Blue Blazer look like a clumsy idiot. Unfortunately, something happened when Hart was still 78 feet above the ring, and he fell free, plummeting into the ring below. Hart suffered serious internal injuries and soon after died in a nearby hospital. To make this tragedy even worse, the World Wrestling Federation (now called World Wrestling Entertainment) didn’t even call off the show as Hart suffered injury then died. They just carried right on filming as the poor fellow lay there. An announcer pointed out that Hart’s obvious injury “wasn’t part of any storyline.” I guess if they stopped the show they would’ve had to refund the gate, right? Hart’s widow Martha ended up suing WWE for exploiting Hart’s name and likeness to (you guess it) make money for the business. Apparently, WWE settled out of court with her in 2000. Does it matter that pro wrestling is fake? No, not at all. Everybody is entitled to the entertainment they prefer. Personally, I couldn’t care less if wrestling is phony. The problem that concerns me, though, is when sports sites like Yahoo who call themselves legitimate news providers include television shows in their sports headlines. When you’ve got material that’s admittedly scripted and phony, then group it in with actual athletic competition; the line between fact and fiction is blurred. Organizations like Yahoo that do such things damage the credibility of all news providers, regardless of size or location. Stu Salkeld is the new editor of the Leduc/Wetaskiwin Pipestone Flyer and writes a regular column for the paper.

403-843-4909 Provincial Transit Engagement and GreenTRIP third call announced The Alberta government took some big steps in March toward improving public transportation for Albertans across our province – and we all have a say in what the future will bring. Alberta Transportation has recently launched a provincial engagement plan for regional transit and rural bus service. It’s my hope that everyone will weigh in with their thoughts on what transit in Alberta should look like. How could transit best serve you and your family? Regional public transit and rural bus services are part of our government’s mandate and we want to know what you think the criteria should be for these types of investments.

Long Stay Deluxe 2 bdrm Suites 4205 - 64 St., Ponoka, AB Includes: Fridge, Stove, Fireplace, Air Conditioning, Window Coverings, Oak Cabinetry with Corian Countertops, Balcony, High Security Card Locks. (Fully Furnished Extra).

It’s important to understand that this province – wide conversation about transit builds on the successes and lessons learned from our government’s experience and ongoing program called the Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP). Recently, my colleague, Transportation Minister Brian Mason, announced the third call for GreenTRIP applications. Our goal with the new provincial transit strategy and funding criteria for future investment in municipal transit initiatives and rural bus service is to move beyond GreenTRIP while maintaining our commitment to public transportation in rural and urban communities. Alberta municipalities that meet the criteria will have access to $415 million to support projects such as buses, parkand-ride facilities and LRT systems. Deadlines for applications has been extended to August 31, 2016 and can be accessed at www.transportation.alberta.ca/5409.htm. We know Albertans support our plan to enhance public transit as a safe, affordable, accessible and environmentally sustainable transportation option. Everyone needs to be able to get where they need to go. This can be especially challenging for seniors, students, people with disabilities and families working on a Ƃxed income – folks who don’t necessarily drive their own private vehicles.

ING! NOW RENT

We are inviting you to tell us what you think the government ought to do about such transportation challenges. What criteria should municipalities follow if they want access funding for transit operations? For more remote areas, what should a provincially supported rural bus service look like?

These are important questions... Questions we know Albertans are prepared to answer. Please visit the Alberta provincial transit engagement website

and complete the online survey. The survey is available until April 29, 2016. During challenging economic times it’s important that the government invest wisely in infrastructure projects that create jobs in the short and long terms and, ultimately, provide valuable service to Albertans. I look forward to working with you to develop the criteria for new municipal transit initiatives and rural bus service programs, along with a provincial transit strategy, to ensure that they best meet the needs of all Albertans. Help us get where we need to go. Sincerely,

RIMBEY REVIEW 9

Developer needs to follow municiple government act to initiate bylaw change and rezoning Council agrees to ahere to process, though developer is anxious to proceed with change BY TREENA MIELKE Human error may have been the cause for a hold up in a land deal now being experienced by a local developer, but he will still have to go through the legal process to rezone three lots located across the street from the proposed lodge. Stan Cummings appeared somewhat frustrated at last Monday’s council meeting with the process which council is adhering to regarding the rezoning. Cummings wants council to give him the green light to subdivide the lots, but he believes legalities are holding the process up. He said his original application submitted to the town was to re-designate one parcel of land, but somewhere in the process, additional lots, including three lots he wants to rezone, were added to the re-designation without his knowledge. At council’s Feb. 22 meeting, Cummings met with council to request a change to the zoning of the lots so there would be no need for a back alley. At that meeting, town planner Liz Armitage said an application for rezoning needed to be made. “A change in a bylaw requires a first reading, public hearing and second and third reading,” she said. At council’s March 7 meeting, she said no application had yet been received. “I don’t see why I have to apply,” said Cummings.

While Armitage was sympathetic to Cummings concerns, she stressed the municipal government act needs to be followed for any bylaw change which requires a public process. Administration will begin working on the application immediately after it is received, she said. The servicing for the lots in question was to be tied in to the proposed new lodge and Pankiw said he understood having the lots serviced were part of the tri party agreement between Rimoka, Ponoka County and the developer. However, town planner Liz Armitage said the subdivision where the lots are located is not part

of the agreement, but the utilities located on those lots are. Due to the possibility of an error on the part of the town’s previous administration, council waived the $750 fee required for the application. “If administration made the mistake, how can we charge?” said Pankiw. In my opinion, we cannot.” At the Feb. 22 meeting, concerns were voiced by a couple of people in the gallery about rezoning the lots from medium density to low density and eliminating a back alley. These concerns can be brought forward at a public hearing.

Oil industry workers deserve some credit and respect Dear Editor I happened to be in a local coffee spot and overheard a conversation that really rubbed me the wrong way. It was regarding those guys in the oilfield and the gist of the conversation was that they were overpaid, overspending, show-offs who deserved to lose their jobs. And I’ve heard the same opinion on the John Gormley show several times, expressed with a lot of anger. I don’t get it. The numbers for Alberta were 86,000 jobs lost at this point. Jobs. That means employees, who, as far as I know, pay taxes without option – it’s coming right off their cheque. So I checked around. According to the Financial Post, the average oilfield wage was $154,000 per year. Lotta money. Also a lot of taxes. And these guys, as wage earners, pay full rate – they do not get any write-offs. Do the math! Alberta taxes were slightly less than Saskatchewan’s,

but if I ran the tax calculator right, at that wage, the federal and provincial taxes would amount to $44,241 per year. About $60,000 if that same wage was in Saskatchewan! Now if there’s been 86,000 people laid off in Alberta, if you add the ones lost in Saskatchewan, you can bet it’s now close to 100,000. So 100,000 wages gone that used to be paying $44,241 in taxes is $4,424,000,000 in lost tax revenue. I had to turn my iPhone sideways to get that number to show up! That’s four billion, with a “b”! Now while some of these guys were maybe overspending, they were also contributing a lot towards funding each and every government service. Not to mention the fact that if they did buy a big boat and a big camper and a big truck, they bought it from a local business, plated it at a local business, bought gas for it at a local business, took it to a local park, paid the fees, enjoyed the scenery, etc., and paid more taxes on every one of those things to boot. Who, exactly, do you think will be making up that shortfall? Was the price of oil too high before? In my opinion, yes, it was. Did any of the people working on the patch set that price? No, they did not. It’s a world market, kind of like the canola or beef market. In years past, when grain prices were low, or when BSE hit the cattle market, I do not ever recall hearing one person in the oil patch say, “serves them right!” I do remember talking to a lot of young local guys who are now farming, but back then were very glad to be able to get a well-paying job in the patch. If you talk to two or maybe three of your neighbours, you’ll be talking to someone who either is involved in the oilfield, or has been in the past, or has kids who are. That’s a large piece of the population and they deserve a bit more respect. They are out there whether it’s hot or cold, wet or dry, doing what it takes to get the job done so that there is fuel to heat your home, put in your truck or car or tractor, or maybe your own big boat. If they’re some of the unfortunate ones who have lost their job, all they’re trying to do is get by until they can get back to work. They want to get back to work! Next time you’re in the warm coffee shop, give a bit of thought to why it’s warm and how you get the gas in your vehicle to get there, and what you maybe should (or shouldn’t) say. during campaign periods, Notley and company scrapped the bill by sending it to committee. I guess now we know why. These old-style political party tactics came on the heels of yet another NDP

Well, that didn’t take long. Less than a year after taking office, the NDP government has abandoned any pretense of cleaning up government, and fully adopted the former PC government’s unethical political playbook. The Notley administration’s most recent attempt to rig the system in the NDP’s favour came earlier this month, with the Minister of Education hosting a funding announcement clearly designed to influence the Calgary-Greenway by-election. The practice of vote buying during by-elections was a staple of the former PC government, and perfected under former Education Minister Gordon Dirks. Of course, while in opposition, the NDP vehemently opposed the practice. Former NDP leader and current minister Brian Mason lambasted the Redford PCs of “misusing resources for partisan purposes, while Notley called for amendments to the Elections Act to, “prohibit MLAs from using government resources during elections or by-elections.” Yet, last fall when my friend and colleague Rick Strankman proposed legislation to ban government vote-buying announcements

yarns relate to her family and her growing up years. Her storytelling career got off to a rather unlikely start when she was a mother helper for her daughters and found that she was asked back by popular demand. Soon she was being asked to perform on a much broader scale and since that time she has never looked back. She enjoys working with children and bringing their dormant imaginations to life. She said everyone has an imagination, but if children are handed ipods and other electronic devices and only watch movies, they will find the process difficult. “Imagination is like a muscle that gets out of shape,” she said. “You need to work that muscle.” Jessup indulges her passion for storytelling through helping children create their own stories and also by working with teachers to give them insight into the creative

process. Her wonderful gift as a storyteller is her own special tool for sparking young minds and letting their imagination wander to great and crative heights. Jessup’s bio explains her stories and articles have appeared in various publications including the Canadian children’s magazine CHICKADEE, and the Alberta Centennial anthology Under the Wide Blue Sky: Alberta Stories to Read and Tell. She’s also been featured on CDs produced by T.A.L.E.S. (The Alberta League Encouraging Storytelling). In 2010, her solo CD Listen Up! Tellable Tales for Hungry Ears was recommended by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre in their guide “Best Books for Kids and Teens.” Jessup offers writing workshops for children and is also in demand as a presenter at teachers’ conventions and professional development days, for educational and literacy organizations.

BY TREENA MIELKE Three-year-old MacKenzie Stimson is a happy child, who is beginning to add more and more words to her vocabulary and will wait patiently in line with other children when the situation calls for it. But she wasn’t always that way. MacKenzie’s mom, Tricia said her little girl was always a happy child, but she few words and often demonstrated hyperactive behavior. The speech delay and the hyperactive activity led the parents to seek a professional diagnosis. “She was diagnosed on the autism spectrum, said Stimson. Aspire provides diagnostic and assessment services (Transdisciplinary Assessment and Consultation, or TAC), and a specialized preschool (EASE, Early Access to Supportive Education). For the Stimsons, who live at Meridian Beach, the school proved to be most beneficial for their little one. “She is now talking in small sentences and is learning what’s expected of her in social situations. Keyera’s Rimbey gas plant’s expansion enhances recoveries of ethane and other natural gas liquids BY TREENA MIELKE The Rimbey gas plant, Keyera’s largest natural gas processing facility, is an impressive processing structure of huge columns of steel and metal, outlined sharply against the blue Alberta sky. At the plant, located about 15 kilometers northeast of Rimbey, it appears to be business as usual with trucks coming and going and personnel suited in blue coveralls and hard hats all busily going about their duties. Bob Morrish, general manager, operations said even with the uneasy financial woes, Albertans, specifically in the oil and gas industry, are facing, Keyera’s Rimbey gas plant is busy. However, Morrish said volumes have leveled out and management is cognizant of the importance of keeping costs down. “We are working very hard to reduce operating costs,” he said, “but we have not laid off any Keyera personnel.” The gas plant, in operation since 1961 has a stellar reputation of rolling with the punches and withstanding the constant ebb and flow that characterizes the oil and gas industry. In keeping with their innovative approach to the industry, the Rimbey gas plant has invested in a $257 million project including the installation of a 400 million

NGLs are naturally occurring hydrocarbons found in natural gas and include several products (e.g. ethane, propane, and butane) which are valuable as separate products.

The project, first announced in 2012, came to fruition on July 4, 2015 after almost two years of extensive planning and a great deal of teamwork and manpower.

“The expertise of our local employees played a huge role in the project,” said Morrish. “Everybody took ownership. There was amazing team effort and every resource group within Keyera had a part to play.” He is proud of the individuals involved and also pleased that there was no loss of time due to injuries while the project was ongoing, even though there was up to 850 people working on site at one time during peak construction. “It was highly organized chaos,” he said. “Keyera views safety and safe practices as our highest priority,” he added. Darrell Nichols, operations foreman and project lead has worked at Rimbey Gas Plant for 31 years. During this time, he has seen many changes, but he said the turbo expander and pipeline is the biggest change he’s seen. “It was something they

talked about for years,” he said, “and it was pretty amazing when it all finally came together.” While the expansion is huge and has allowed the Rimbey plant to secure Dow Canada as a customer for their ethane, Morrish noted the plant’s overall volume capability is the same as before the upgrade. “We upgraded one section/ process of the plant. We did not make the plant able to produce higher volumes of inlet gas than it did before. We simply have the ability to recover more of the NGLs from the raw inlet gasses.” He explained that up to 95 or 96 per cent of the ethane is being recovered and sold to Dow Canada. The deep-cut liquid extraction capability means the Rimbey gas plant can offer processing services including NGL fractionation, rail and truck loading facilities and an NGL pipeline connection to the Edmonton/ Fort Saskatchewan NGL hub.

Keeping kids safe priority Each year, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association teams up with sponsors and friends to celebrate Canadian Agricultural Safety Week. For the next three years CASA is asking everyone in the agricultural community

to “Be An AgSafe Family” and this year, you can do just that by “Keeping Kids Safe.” The ag family is large; it includes all those who work and care about agriculture. Ag family members come from farming communities,

schools, agri-businesses and other organizations that work to make Canadian agriculture vibrant and thriving. For each of the next three years, Canadian Agricultural Safety Week will focus on different parts of the ag family.

For 2016, this focus is on “Keeping Kids Safe.” How can members of the ag family (Remember this includes more people than children, moms and dads and grandparents!) work to keep kids safe? Well, there are plenty of things each

National Farm Safety & Health Week When farming please follow all necessary precautions in order to keep yourself, your family and your workers safe.

and every one of us can do. Farm families can work to establish safe play areas where little ones can explore, learn and play without the risk of being hurt or killed. We all know that small children are incredibly curious. Their little minds and bodies are growing and absorbing the big, wonderful world around them all the time. Something as simple as a blade of grass can be fascinating. A small bug or butterfly can send their imaginations soaring. Livestock, farm equipment, and other potential hazards can also be intriguing, exciting and fascinating. That’s why it’s so important to set boundaries and establish rules and guidelines around play areas on the farm. Farm families can also work on determining tasks for children on the farm that are safe and age- appropriate. Understanding how children develop and grow is key in determining what they are capable of and how they can participate in ag tasks safely. It’s important to be honest with yourself and your child. Just be-

cause they might be big enough, that might not always mean they have the attention span or the skills to successfully and safely complete a task. Farming communities and schools can work to teach children about the hazards they might come across on the farm. Some ways of talking with children about farm safety can include incorporating farm safety into the school day, or even hold a farm safety day event. Safety day events, like Progressive Agriculture Safety Days® are available to all Canadian communities. These days are organized by the community for the community and address the safety issues that are of most concern to the community. Agri-businesses are in unique positions to influence safety on the farm. As trusted members of the farming team, agronomists, equipment technicians, and sales representatives all understand their customers’ needs. Agri-businesses hear the problems of their farming community.

Keep Children Safe on the Farm National Farm Safety Week March 14 – 20, 2016 Farming is a very rewarding, important and invaluable industry in Canada. But for all of its benefits, it is also one of the most dangerous industries, and the reality of the profession is that children are often around the workplace. This means exposure to hazards including toxic chemicals, unpredictable livestock and potentially dangerous machinery. This exposure makes it absolutely crucial that children be taught

about the potential dangers around them and how to avoid putting themselves at risk. March 14 – 20 is National Farm Safety Week and this year, the Canada Safety Council is reminding Canadian families to take precautions while on the farm, ensuring the safety of children by understanding the concerns and paying attention to detail. According to a study by Canadian Agricultural

Injury Reporting (CAIR), 272 Canadians under the age of 14 died between 1992 and 2012 in agricultural-related fatalities, with approximately 45 per cent of those being four years of age or younger. The most common causes of death among children are machine runovers (41.9 per cent,) followed by drownings (15.2 per cent,) machine rollovers (11.1 per cent,) animal-related injuries (6.5 per cent) and being crushed by or under an object (5.1 per cent.) Often, bystander runovers occur when children are playing on the farm or near a worksite. The farm vehicle is usually in reverse, and the adult is not expecting the child to be there. This fact alone makes it crucially important to set aside an area reserved for playing in the yard. A fenced-in area with self-locking gate closures will ensure that the child’s

exposure to runover-related danger is greatly reduced. It’s important to remember that what may seem to be an obvious safety measure isn’t always so obvious, especially with younger children. Teach them which areas are off-limits or dangerous. As they get older and start helping out around the farm, take the time to teach them the proper way of doing things, explaining and enforcing safety as the primary goal. Keep in mind their limited experience and strength when assigning tasks, giving them age- and size-appropriate responsibilities. That being said, it’s not enough to tell children how to do things safely. Especially when it comes to work-related tasks, children are driven to follow examples set by their parents and other adults. Farmers and workers have to make sure that they’re following safety

on any equipment. Extra rider runovers are a very common cause of injury. Drownings on the farm occur, especially among children six years old or less. Fence farm ponds, manure pits, and any other source of water that could pose a drowning risk. Designate a specific fenced-off area that is solely for playing. Ensure that it is kept far from animals, as even calm and normally docile animals can become dangerous if they feel that either they or their offspring are threatened. Keep all farm chemicals out of the reach of children and locked away in a cabinet, room or building. Keep grain bins off-limits for children — it takes only a few seconds for a person to become helplessly trapped under flowing grain, where they could suffocate. - Canada Safety Council

protocols and being careful, or the message will ring hollow to children and they will not see it as important. Take the following precautions to ensure that your farm is safe for children: Inspect your farm with your children for any areas that contain hazards. Make sure to not only identify the hazards, but also to explain why they’re dangerous to the children and, if possible, take steps to mitigate the danger. Before setting children to work on age-appropriate tasks, check local laws to ensure that they are of legal age to operate farm machinery. Train older children before setting them to work on anything. Ensure they understand the proper operation of machinery they’re being asked to use, and that they know what to do at all times. Tips for safe operation of ATVs Economical, versatile and fun, all-terrain vehicles have long been indispensable tools on Canadian farms and ranches. But as the size, power and popularity of ATVs has increased, so too has the potential for serious injuries. This National Farm Safety Week, why not review the facts about ATVs and make sure you and your family are riding safe? “It doesn’t take much to roll an ATV,” warns Canada Safety Council’s resident off-road expert Mike Prud’homme. “And there’s nothing fun about an ATV rollover. If you have 600 pounds plus gear falling on you, it’s going to be hard to push off.” If you use an ATV for work or recreation, follow these safety precautions to reduce your risk: 1. Train up. A few hours in a Canada Safety Council ATV course could save your life. 2. Suit up. Wear a helmet, eye protection, long pants, long sleeves, gloves and non-skid shoes for every ride. 3. Ride the right size. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Adult-sized ATVs are not appropriate for children under 16. 4. Ride by day. Even on familiar terrain, low light and reduced visibility will increase the chances of a mishap. Park your ATV after dark and in poor weather. 5. Never take passengers. Most ATVs are not designed for doubling. Do not attach passenger seats to your ATV. When using ATVs for farm chores, be extra cautious when hauling or towing. 1. Lighten up. Check your owner’s manual for load limits and resist the temptation to over load. Use proper tie-downs to secure your load and

properly distribute the weight. Weight distribution is extremely important. Any load will affect the performance and stability of the vehicle, so adjust your driving accordingly. 2. Don’t alter your ATV. Adding after-market passenger seats or other implements will affect the weight distribution and stability of the machine, increasing the likelihood

of tip-over and rollover accidents. - Canada Safety Council The Canada Safety Council is an independent, knowledge-based, charitable organization dedicated to the cause of safety. We provide national leadership in safety through information, education and collaboration. We are Canada’s voice and resource for safety.

We salute our area farmers and agriculture industry for their contribution to our local community.

New fundraising society donates to Rimbey Junior/Senior High School BY JEAN ORAM

Agriculture is our way of life too 1-800-387-3232 fcc.ca

Last fall a community fundraising society, The Rimbey Jr./Sr. High School Society, was formed with the purpose of enhancing student life within Rimbey Junior Senior High School. So far, approximately a dozen parents with children in the school have worked together to create the society and to hold several fundraisers. Each year, the school struggles to fund projects that increase student engagement and enhance student life within the school. This includes keeping their Spartans bus on the road—a bus used for field trips, sports teams, and other school activities. They also strive to finance items such as guest speakers, awards and prizes for their awesome Assemblies, run extra-curricular sports (which studies show improve student graduation rates, increase problem solving skills, and boost self-confidence) as well as offer a welcome back breakfast, and provide benches outside the school for students and guests. These are just a few examples of items that enhance student life and culture within the school community but are not covered under the Alberta Education school funding model. The RJSHS Society has chosen to donate four hundred dollars from fall fundraisers toward the school’s annual Christmas banquet budget which serves all RJSHS students, grades 7 to 12, as well as the school’s teaching and support staff. The turkey dinner is a much anticipated, massive undertaking that is held for all staff and students on the last day of school before the Christmas break and is a way

for the school to come together as a community and break bread before the holidays. To date, the society has held several in-school fundraisers that have included a hot lunch from Rimbey Subway, a junior high dance snack bar, as well as an October BBQ. In the future, the society hopes to apply for grants as well as casinos to help increase their ability to financially assist the school. The society also hopes to work with an increasing number of local businesses and has plans to offer a Rimbey Co-op hot lunch in the coming months. School principal Tim Lekas, when asked for feedback from the society, mentioned that while the fundraisers have not only the potential to lessen the school’s financial burdens, they have also created a sense of enthusiasm as well as added to student culture within the school. Another offshoot of the society is that it provides an outlet for parents who would like to become more involved in their child’s school to help out while enhancing the school’s positive culture and feeling of community support. The society is open to all parents as well as community members. They will be holding their next meeting on Tuesday, March 15 in the high school library following the school council meeting which begins at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and input is always welcome. As well, the society welcomes community support from individuals and local businesses. If you are interested in assisting the society in any way, please contact Jean at rjshsfoundation@gmail.com. You can also keep up-to-date by liking their Facebook page—search for Rimbey.

In Loving Memory of Taylor Robert Leverick

December 3, 1998 - March 15, 2015

John Richard (Rick) LEE March 7, 1963 - February 29, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the peaceful passing of John Richard (Rick) Lee. He lost his long battle with cancer on February 29, 2016 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre surrounded by family just short of his 53rd birthday. Rick was the youngest son, born in Calgary, to Marjorie (Gran)and George (Gramps) Lee and was raised on their property in Midnapore. Rick worked across Alberta doing many jobs and ended up in the Rimbey area. He married Karen (nee Gustafson) in 1992 and they built a home in the Town of Rimbey. There they raised six children (Amy Reid, Angela , Greg, Emily, John and Lora). Rick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 24 years, Karen and his beloved children; Amy, Angela (Eric), Greg, Emily (Nick), John and Lora; precious grandchildren; Allison, Brooke, and new baby (April 2016). He will be fondly remembered by his three brothers; Ted(Debbie), Tom(Joanne), and Mike; five sisters; Trish(Bob), Margie(Roger), Jeannette(Mike), Lolly and Beth(Daryl); mother-in-law; Frances Gustafson; three sisters-in-law; Cheryl, Debbie(Ted), Liz; five brothers-in-law; Russell, Terry, Murray, Don, and Eric (Lara), as well as, many beloved nieces and nephews and extended family members and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents George Edward Lee (2004) and Marjorie Mae Lee (nee Fachini) in 2000, his brother-in-law Craig Bernick in 1999 and his nephew David Stewart in 2003. We will lovingly remember Rick for his sense of humour and hard work ethic. He was gifted in doing carpentry and drywalling. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family. Rick enjoyed hunting, camping, horseback riding , the outdoors and spending quality time with family and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 1 pm at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre in Rimbey, Alberta with Pastor Reg Darnell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kids in Sports c/o Janet Stout, P.O. Box 655, Rimbey, Alberta, T0C 2J0. Expressions of sympathy may be made by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca. WILSON’S FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, of Lacombe and Rimbey in charge of arrangements. 403-843-3388 403-843-3388 “A Caring Family, Caring For Families” For 40 years

Today, like many other days brings special thoughts of you of happy times we shared and caring things you used to do. And, once more it’s a reminder that life’s road is sometimes rough because the time we shared just wasn’t long enough. For you were someone special who was thought so highly of who’ll always be remembered with affection, warmth and love. We’re sending thoughts to Heaven on the day you went away and hope you know you’re missed more than words could ever say. We love and miss you always, Dad, Mom and Thomas

Card Of Thanks In appreciation to Teri Ormberg. We wish to say thank you for arranging the annual tea at the Beatty House which allows so many of us to stay connected and continue our valued friendships. Thanks for all you do for so many! We really appreciate you. Rimbey Hospital Retirees

Crestomere school in contest, need public votes editorial@ponokanews.com

Grade 7/8/9 students at Crestomere School are vying for national acclaim and they are hoping to receive some support in the form of votes from area residents for their entry to a video contest. Teacher Kayley Bowie, who lead the students in the project said the whole thing started when she received a brochure from Parks Canada at the beginning of the school year about a contest open to all Grade 8 classes throughout the country. “Since we are a 7/8/9 split class, all of my students qualified,” she said. The contest requires classes to create a one-minute video about a Canadian national park of choice. The video has to explain the selected park’s environmental or cultural significance for Canadians. The winning entry will reward the Grade 8 class that produced it with a fiveday trip Jasper, “which is not something we would be able to afford on our own,” Bowlie added. “I put all of the choice in my students’ hands. Each of them chose a park and researched it, then shared their research with the class,” she went on. After discussing probably 15 different national parks, the students voted for the Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Alberta, which was researched and proposed by Grade 9 student. Emma said, “I had never heard of Wood Buffalo and

wanted to bring attention to a park in Alberta other than Jasper or Banff. It protects endangered animals like the whooping crane and it is the largest national park in the world.” Further research and discussions followed to decide on what the video should depict and how with all class going for a creative and original production instead of rap or a song. Then Bowie said she herself suggested a silent film to the class. “It took pressure off the kids who didn’t want to speak in front of the camera, and it allowed us to be comedic. My group has an amazing sense of humour,” she said. “Because we are rural, we were limited to filming everything at the school so we had to think outside the box,” Bowie said of the production process. “All of our props were things the kids brought from home, including a fake Canada goose and a kayak. We utilized our green screen technology to help out with a few scenes. Every student got to be in the video and watch scenes being filmed. It was extremely difficult fitting everything we wanted to do into only one minute, but I think my students were very happy with the final results.” Commenting on their production, “We tried to take a unique spin on it by doing something different so we would stand out,” said Mackenzie Gillard in Grade 8. Grade 7 student Colter Bresee said “I like all the props we used, and all of the team scenes we filmed where we got to do things together.” To watch the video and to vote for the Crestomere School entry, visit http://contest.myparkspass.ca

MLA holds NDP accountable continued from page 11 public itinerary. Whether or not this violates Alberta’s law banning corporate and union donations, it certainly smacks of the kind of influence peddling that plagued the former PC government. It also breaks the NDP’s own ethical standards, as expressed by Notley in 2012, when she said, “We, in fact, have a principle and a rule in our party that we don’t accept corporate donations. Notwithstanding that the law allows it, we don’t ac-

cept them.” Uh huh. It seems clear to me the NDP’s has fully adopted the kind of old-style politics that is holding our province back. Albertans deserve better. Our Official Opposition remains dedicated to doing democracy differently. We believe that a MLA’s first responsibility is to these citizens, so we recognize that MLAs must have the freedom to vote accordingly. In addition, we recognize that our province is stronger when we give citizens more

power. For this reason we have launched a petition to support new recall legislation. If you are interested in learning more, go to: www. supportrecall.ca As Alberta’s recession continues, the government’s preoccupation with old-style politics is failing our families, our communities, and our economy. As the spring session of the Legislature continues, I will be providing my full support to democratic reform initiatives designed to put Albertans first. -30-
