Shelter extension frustrates neighbouring businesses
The RainCity-operated facility remains open until the end of June.
TROY LANDREVILLE
tlandreville@mrtimes.com
A three-month extension to Maple Ridge’s temporary homeless shelter isn’t sitting well with some neighbouring business owners. RainCity Housing opened the 40-bed facility inside the former Sleep Shop location at 22239 Lougheed Hwy. on Oct. 1, 2015, and it was to close its doors March 31. On March 10, the B.C. government announced it is providing $270,000 to allow the shelter to stay open until June 30. BC Housing stated that the extension “will ensure that vulnerable individuals continue to have access to a warm, safe place to stay, while permanent housing solutions are being arranged.” Mission Ridge Auto Sales at 22245 Lougheed Hwy shares a wall with the shelter and is fairly new to the community, having opened its doors on April 1, 2015 after 15 years in Mission. Behind the shelter is Louis Leather Shop & Motorcycle Wear, operated by Louis Bayard. Both Bayard and Mission Ridge Auto Sales president Darren Wellander had hoped the shelter would close at the end of this month. Now, the two businessmen say, they will have to continue to deal with the open drug use and other problems which they allege take place around the shelter on an almost daily basis.
“We’re not happy about it,” Bayard said, about the shelter staying open for another three months. “If we start telling all our customers that this is happening, it’s going to kill us even more. We don’t want our customers to be scared about coming around. We could affect our business more by talking about it all the time than we could by not saying a word.” The morning of March 11, a handful of needles were collected near Bayard’s store. For his part, Wellander said there are “10 needles a day” discarded outside his fenced lot. Wellander said the City broke its promise that it would close the shelter after six months. “The whole idea was to house them for six months and find an alternative,” Wellander said. “We know a month ago they had nothing planned. It seemed like they went five months and no one did anything about it, and then as it got close to the end, they decided they needed to do a little research and find out where they could put these people.” Wellander said he called 9-1-1 four times on March 10. The reasons, he alleges, were “drug use, [an] OD [overdose] on the front street… we’ve seen people come out, lean their arms into the windows of cars, they get shot up with their drugs, they go back in.” RainCity Housing associate director Sean Spear said cooperation from local businesses and “community partners” has led to people being safely indoors during the last six months. “We hope that businesses with concerns will reach to us and together we can address issues

that may arise,” Spear said. “This has been extremely effective in other neighbourhoods [which] operate programs.” Spear pointed out that people staying in the shelter have called it “a blessing.” “One person has said ‘It helped me from killing myself,’” noted Spear, who said the first step was to bring Cliff Avenue campers indoors, “which we were able to do.” Over the past six months RainCity has determined these were vulnerable people with complex needs, and more than everyone had realized, Spear told The TIMES.
“It became clear that a 24-hour facility was needed in this community, and the folks now indoors, RCMP, the fire department, and many businesses have confirmed this,” Spear said. “We look forward to continuing this work through the spring while the people in the shelter await more permanent housing.” In an email to The TIMES, City of Maple Ridge manager of corporate communications Fred Armstrong said the homelessness issue is being managed in “crisis” mode. “The emergency shelter was put into place to offer a roof for people who were living on the

streets,” Armstrong said, noting that the former Cliff Avenue camp was the only one of its kind in B.C. “to voluntarily decamp.” “We dealt with this issue straight on as a community and we succeeded where cities larger than ours failed,” he said. Armstrong pointed out that no one from the neighbouring business community have shown up for community liaison meetings. “This reflects a disconnect with the people who are alleging the problems and their ability to have direct input to the community standards team,” Armstrong said. “Since the shelter opened they have not been dealing with the same 40 people,” Armstrong added. “A lot of people have cycled through the facility. Over a hundred. Many of the people from the original Cliff camp are housed now. The people in the shelter have challenges. Some have addictions, some have mental health issues, some have both. There is no quick fix.” The province made an offer to purchase Maple Ridge’s Quality Inn for roughly $5.5 million, with the intent to use the building to provide 61 units of long-term supportive housing for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, including people currently living in the temporary shelter. “They made the proposal to [Maple Ridge] council with one month to go before the shelter is to close,” Armstrong shared. “If we don’t have a temporary shelter we will take a giant step back to camping in the community and there will still be crime and prostitution like there has been for a decade.”
Hikers helped Two hikers who were stuck in Golden Ears Provincial Park this weekend due to fallen trees and possible power lines down, made it home safe, thanks to cooperative efforts between emergency crews and BC Hydro.
A proposal by BC Housing to turn the Quality Inn into supportive housing was a big talking point in Maple Ridge City council chambers this past Monday.

Anne Marrison grew up with dirt underneath her fingernails. And while the retiring TIMES columnist has spent a large portion of her working life as a journalist, she has had a lifelong passion for gardening. “I love it, plus it’s good exercise,” she said. “I’ve always loved growing vegetables.
Today’s edition includes Anne’s final column. Anne, 79, says that as enjoyable as writing her weekly gardening column has been, she needs to focus on her own garden, and her, 93-year-old husband, Eric. “I’m more tired than I was, my balance isn’t as good as it was,” Anne said. “So I said, this is time.” Eric no longer drives and for the past 29 years, the couple has lived in Whonnock. Anne plans on easing into full-time retirement. “I’m a self-confessed

Her decision to retire her gardening column closes the final chapter of a working career that started when she was 14 years old and living in England. first our plants were cuttings and divisions from family. Then I joined the Alpine Garden Club of B.C. This club triggered my love for growing things from seed. These included six seed-grown witch hazels – and some years later, after I had spoken severely to them about compost, they all flowered. A few years later, I was single and my garden was a city lot in warm, sunny White Rock. I began the garden column in 1985 in the same week that Eric and I got married. Two years later, I was gardening on an acreage in Maple Ridge. In 1994 I began writing features. But now I’m older and slower. It’s time for another life change which means ending this column. Thank-you to the ones who helped me so much: to Eric who is my proof-reader and office manager, to my editors – and the gardeners over the years who asked me questions and taught me so much. Since I can’t quite give up, I’ll still answer questions.

Found needle hurts boy An accidental poke could be life altering for a four-year-old boy.
Kesler Wied, 4 loves to play outside. Melissa Cook Special to The TIMES
ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
A Maple Ridge mother is facing her worst nightmare after her four-year-old son accidentally poked himself with a needle that he found while playing outside. Melissa Cook was bringing groceries into her apartment in Maple Courts, located on 224th Street and 121st Avenue, on March 11, while her three sons were playing right outside. When she walked back outside, she said, her 11-year-old son told her that his brother, Kesler Wied, had picked up a needle off of the ground. She told The TIMES she immediately took the needle, and checked Kesler for anything that would suggest he’d been
poked. Then she took the needle to her apartment manager, which she noted had blood inside the barrel of the needle, as well as on the needle. She showed it to the manager, alongside eight RCMP officers who were also in the building, and asked what she should do. The Mounties asked her if Kesler had “been stabbed,” and she said “no,” to which they responded “okay,” and took the needle, she said.
Moments later, the officers knocked on her apartment door, asking Cook where the needle was found, and confirming that her son hadn’t been poked, she said. Cook surveyed her sons hand again, and found an “incision between his right thumb and forefinger,” she said. Asking the officers what to do, “they just said go to the clinic or to the hospital,” and asked her if she had transportation and left, she said.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the mom was told Kesler would need to undergo tests for HIV, hepatitis C, and hepatitis B. “They told me that no matter what, it would test negative because it was too soon,” she said. Now, for the next year, every three months Kesler will have to be retested for transmitted diseases. “We have to go in and be reminded of what happened,” she said. The mom told the story of what happened to Kesler on Facebook, she said. “Somebody wrote me a comment on how I should be considerate and have kind thoughts for the drug addict – compassion,” she said. “I do have compassion, I had some friends go through drugs and get clean... I don’t have compassion for people who are leaving needles, and not having compassion for my son who could be playing.”

Backup LNG plan needed
T
he Liberal government’s plan to develop a liquified natural gas industry was not a bad one. When they first set out to sell LNG to overseas markets, China was booming and demanding more and more energy, and there was hope that other Asian countries would also need the relatively clean power of LNG in the near future. While LNG isn’t entirely green – it does produce greenhouse gases – it is a heck of a lot cleaner than coal. Half a loaf is better than no loaf, when it comes to the environment, and if B.C. could benefit financially as well, then so much the better. Now prospects are bleaker. China is indeed reducing its reliance on dirty coal-burning power plants. But it is taking advantage of wind and solar power, planning to add more than 20 gigawatts of the former and 15 of the latter this year, not to mention new hydroelectric projects. A decade ago investing that much in solar and wind would have seemed foolish, but the cost of solar power is dropping rapidly, as better designs and ramped up manufacturing have slashed prices. Solar is getting more efficient all the same time, meaning that for many countries, in just a few years, switching to large scale solar will be cheaper than LNG, by some estimates, sometime in the next five to 10 years. Meanwhile, on the home front, the opposition to fracking and pipeline projects has not faded, and while LNG is preferable to Albertan bitumen, it would still face some protests if it ever gets off the ground. The question isn’t whether we get some LNG terminals up and running, or even whether LNG can still find a niche in the world’s energy supply. It’s what comes next. What is Plan B? The Liberals are still touting LNG, and show little to no sign of finding a new plan for B.C.’s long term economic growth. Where do we go from here? Should B.C. be a technology hub, a high-tech manufacturing powerhouse? A tourism and lifestyle retreat? An old-school resource extraction province? It would be nice to know soon.

and I walk a kilometre in the annual run which falls between our birthdays in September. I have had cancer. I beat it. I wear the red Terry’s Team t-shirt, proudly. I watch the movie that was made about the run, even though it will never win an academy award, not unless DiCaprio plays the lead role, with Neil Patrick Harris as Terry’s brother and De Niro as Rolly. Rolly has been described as a quiet optimist who faced death with courage and grace, like his son. Terry’s mother, Betty who died in 2011, was more the bulldog – and I say this with the greatest respect. Their son inherited traits from both parents that gave him the determina-

R
olly Fox died last week at the age of 80. For those of you who have been on an extended vacation in the Turks and Caicos for the last 35 years, Rolly was the father of Canadian hero Terry Fox, a modest and unassuming young man who died at the age of 22 after completing part of a cross country run to raise money for cancer. That was 1981; and since then millions and millions of dollars from the annual Terry Fox runs around the world have contributed to cancer research that, ironically, would have saved Terry’s life today. I am a Fox fan. I can still shed a tear when I see Terry, in an old film, hobbling down some highway in the worst of weather on a prosthetic leg. I have part of a map from the 25th anniversary t-shirt tattooed on my chest. Every year the Angel Andrew
tion and the guts to try and cross this country on an artificial leg and a pair of Adidas running shoes. He has been immortalized in statues and schools and street names. His legacy endures in the Terry Fox Foundation, a family-run affair, including Maple Ridge’s Fred Fox, his daughters and his lovely wife who offers the friends and family discount down at the transfer station. (If her employer is reading this – just kidding!?). News of Rolly’s death should allow us all a moment to consider our TIM TYLER heroes. Do you really want to idolize the likes of Tiger Woods, golf course Lothario, or tennis gazillionaire Maria Sharapova, recently
busted for doping, or any of the toothless rich boys playing our national game? No, it is young Fox towards whom you should look for perspective and inspiration. To wit, my bad back recently went ‘out’ though where the hell it goes I never know. It disrupts my schedule when it acts up, it hurts, even when I cough or sneeze, I whine and complain and demand service and succour from family members. When I hear about Rolly, though and think about Terry, I feel ashamed, I shut up and suck it up, knowing I’ll be back to normal – should that term apply to me – in no time at all. My deepest and sincerest sympathy goes out to the Fox Family. Read Bob Groeneveld’s Odd Thoughts online this week at mrtimes.com

Housing ‘solution’ exacerbates problem Dear Editor, Re: the proposal of Maple Ridge’s Quality Inn as supportive housing, this suggestion is totally unacceptable. Many of us who are in close proximity to the previous Cliff Avenue situation are well aware of the issues of property loss and other issues that this escalating situation has caused over the past years, and are no longer sympathetic to the plight of these people. Their activity and presence have done nothing to help
their situation and the enabling of the continuing drug abuse by the various so-called supportive means has only invited further influx of more individuals who care not for regulation, disciplined behaviour, or contribute to the community. There is no accountability to anyone, it seems, and this “solution” will do nothing but exacerbate the previous ugly situation in the neighbourhood, not to mention the poor businesses that are trying to operate in the immediate area.
This will kill business, devalue property, and cause undue stress, similar to what happened last summer. The idea of a taxpayer-funded drug house will travel fast and far, believe me. Just so you know, as longtime taxpayers in this community and the province, we get more and more disappointed in the authorities’ approach to dealing with this ridiculous, ongoing situation. Ron and Catherine Thomey, Maple Ridge
BrandSource combines the purchases of all our 4,500 member stores, which gives us $11 Billion in buying power across North America. We have over 145 owner-operated home furnishing stores across Canada. That means you get the best possible value with fair and competitive prices every day.
Citizens’ sense of safety ‘ripped away’ Dear Editor, To the mayor and council members of the City of Maple Ridge: You showed your ignorance of street culture when you called the homeless and addicted together on Cliff Avenue. You showed your distaste and disrespect of the citizens of Maple Ridge and proved your ignorance of street culture when you opened up that waste of our money, and slap in our collective faces you call
a “shelter.” Remember us? The people who pay you to watch out for our best interests? Warehousing addicts and allowing then to continue to kill themselves with their drug of choice, and by not disallowing the open drug use at that shelter is unconscionable and shows your lack of desire to help get these people the help they so desperately need to become healthy, contribut-
ing members of any society. You went from being disliked and mistrusted for this, to being hated by all the people of this town who are about to have their sense of peace and safety ripped away from them by the provincial government buying up the Quality Inn on Lougheed and spending $5.5 million on renovations, just to hand it over to people who will not respect it, or the people who live here. Mike Hayner, Maple Ridge
Trans Pacific Partnership bad for Canadians Dear Editor, I was disappointed that the Liberal government went ahead and signed the Trans Pacific Partnership – an agreement that was negotiated in secret by the previous government. One of the Liberals’ campaign promises was to have meaningful dialogue with Canadians on the impacts the TPP will have on Canada. They also promised to make decisions using science and facts rather than ideology.
With Justin Trudeau’s visit to Washington last week, this promise appears to have been thrown out the window. The TPP is not good for Canadians. Like NAFTA, this is not a “Free Trade” deal, it is a “Corporate Trade” deal that grants foreign corporations more rights, while workers’ rights remain almost totally unprotected. For example: • Chapter 12 of the TPP gives corporations the ability to bring

employees to Canada en masse, without any requirement that these workers be paid fairly; • employers will be able to transfer skilled trades and technical employees to Canada, with no requirement that they attempt to hire within Canada first; • labour provisions of the TPP have no teeth and provide no guarantees that basic workers’ rights in the TPP partner countries will be protected; and • since the early 1990s, as international trade agreements have
proliferated, thousands of jobs have been lost, work has become more precarious, income inequality has grown, and corporations have found more ways to escape responsibilities to treat workers fairly. A Tufts University simulation that used the UN Global Policy Model projects greater income inequality in every TPP country by 2025 as a result of this agreement. The TPP will only make things worse! Care compassionate Dear Editor, The Bryce family thanks the Emergency Dept. staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital, and the staff of 3North for their excellent and compassionate care of our dearly departed Ann Bryce. All staffing shifts in both departments treated Ann and family gently as well as professionally. We owe the people who serve in 3North a special debt of gratitude for having gone above and beyond the call of duty in their consideration and care of our whole family during our stay. Dr. Williams was not only professionally capable but she also showed us the warm and friendly side of doctoring. She even followed up. Thank you all. H. W. Bryce, Maple Ridge

Sending it back to the 1950s:
The Kiwanis Club of Golden Ears hosted a ’50s themed fundraiser on Saturday, March 12 at the Maple Ridge Legion Branch 88. Guests enjoyed a roast beef dinner, silent auction, and danced to jive music in their best ’50s getups. The club was presented with a cheque for $45,000 by Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing on behalf of the province. The group also presented cheques of their own, to the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society, Ridge Meadows Country Fest, and multi-service charity Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Community Services.
Artist show:
Community members had the chance to purchase local art at the Group of Nine Art Show this past Saturday and Sunday (March 12 and 13). Group members showcasing their work included Betty Coy, Joanne Lewis, and Florence Nicholson. Despite the wet and windy weather, said Coy, the group “had quite a large turnout on both days.”

Haney Public House A great atmosphere, good drinks and even better food are what keep people coming back to the Haney Public House. Chef Ryan Erdman knows the food has to be top quality at an affordable price and he always strives to offer his customers food that isn’t available anywhere else. “We try to be more than just a neighbourhood pub,” he says. “It’s a beautiful room here and we know the food keeps bringing people back.” Chef Ryan brings out a new fresh sheet every month or so and offers a variety

Obviously burgers and the more than 30 flavours of wings are classic best sellers at the Haney Public House, but even these have a Chef Ryan twist. Like the Bistro burger featuring goat cheese, bacon and balsamic onion jam; or the Breakfast Club burger with fried egg, maple bacon and guacamole. “We believe in giving the best quality for the best price,” says Chef Ryan. “You can have a good time here with good food and

As Chef Ryan points out, there are few licensed places in town that can accommodate 100-or-so people in such a nice environment with great food. Appetizers are popular menu items as well with everything from lettuce wraps and potstickers to cheddar ale dip and hot dog sliders. There are daily food and drink specials on the menu as well. Chef Ryan and his team brainstorm around

Gratia Bakery & Café A new addition to
the food scene in Maple Ridge has brought an urban feel with hometown tastes and service. The reception locals have given to the new Gratia Bakery & Café on Dewdney Trunk Road has been nothing short of openarmed and delighted. Owners Leo Kwon and his wife Esther Ahn have been part of the community for more than 13 years with their former bakery, Bread ‘n Buns Factory. They wanted to bring something different to their community that their fellow residents would love. The new location opened in mid-February and while bread and buns are baked on site as they were at the previous location, there are also new, tasty additions. A deli case offers fresh meats and cheeses next to a refrigerated shelf with sandwiches freshly made on custom Gratia breads. Don’t see the sandwich your mouth is watering for? Just ask the team at Gratia to make one up for you! There are plenty of choice of cold drinks to go alongside your sandwich, but if you’re craving something warmer, the barista will whip up a specialty coffee or tea. There is even a breakfast menu and the team at Gratia
serve breakfast and lunch seven days a week. “We didn’t have food service at the old location,” Esther says. “We just had a few sandwiches. Now we are able to invite the community in to spend time with us. Leo and I love it. We love having people in the space and spending time here.” When your sweet tooth takes over it’s time to check out the items in the bakery area where cheesecakes and pastries are offered. Leo makes some of the pastries, but his true passion is bread. “The bread business is a very honest business,” Leo says. He should know. He’s been making breads for more than 17 years. “I can serve it to people, I can give it to people who need food. People buy it from me and I’m able to keep making more and serving others.” Esther explains that for a number of years the Bread ‘n Buns Factory donated sandwiches every single Friday to those who needed food. It’s part of the couple’s way of doing business – giving to others. There are almost 30 varieties of bread made on site including
22225 DEWDNEY TRUNK ROAD, MAPLE RIDGE | 604-463-9992 WWW.GRATIABAKERY.COM standard white and whole wheat as well as different flavours like dark pumpernickel rye, egg bread, caraway rye, walnut raisin rye, roasted garlic and Swiss cheese, olive bread and ancient grain whole grain. “My start in baking, I tried the ancient Korean and Chinese style, but at that time, I saw that the market for those items was too small,” says Leo. He began to specialize in more traditional European breads. In addition to the great range of breads at Gratia, there are seven different kinds of buns, pizza dough, puff pastry, pie dough and bread crumbs available for purchase. Look to the wide range of bagels too and focaccia breads; one even has jalapeno peppers. Seasonal offerings include hot cross buns at Easter, pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and Christmas, Brioche loaf and stolen are also on the Christmas baking list. “We really love this job,” Esther says. “To be able to offer a good product for a fair price, it’s a good thing.” And while both Esther and Leo love the work, it is the human aspect that makes the business so meaningful to them.
“I’m really happy when I see families here in the evening enjoying coffee and cakes,” notes Esther. “I think people really like this place and we love having them here. Sometimes we don’t have enough seats, but it will take time to get a permit that allows for more.” Leo decided to set up in Maple Ridge because he saw the community’s growth potential. “I saw Maple Ridge growing faster than other cities,” he says. “And now, people come in here and they say ‘thank you’ for offering this space.” Gratia is a family business through and through. AJ Bhogal learned a love for cooking in his mother’s kitchen. Then, as a teen, AJ found himself working in a commercial kitchen where the passion grew. Now at Indian Flavour, AJ delivers authentic tastes of India with Punjabi-style cooking. “I spent most of my money in the kitchen on that,” AJ says of the tandoor clay oven that makes naan bread, kebabs and tandoori chicken. “I want people to see what we do here, to see we make authentic food in an authentic kitchen.”
we make food as good as it can be and offer incredible value.” The creamy, spicy aroma of the buffet is mouthwatering, but it doesn’t even begin to compare to the amazing taste of buffet items like butter chicken, paneer in cream sauce and aloo gobi. Take AJ up on his offer – try his food and tell him what you think.
Jolly Coachman An iconic destination in Pitt Meadows,
the Jolly Coachman has long been known for great food and a fun atmosphere. Chef, Rebecca Hope has been with the pub for close to two decades, bringing her own dimension to Jolly Coachman fare. “These days, people are looking for classics,” Rebecca says. “That means something they recognize, but it also needs to take that familiar taste somewhere exceptional.” One of those exceptional dishes is the Braised Short Rib Grilled Cheese.
Not just the oven is authentic; AJ also imports raw spices from India and makes his own spice blends. The spices and freshness of the ingredients are obvious in the flavor of the food served on the daily lunch buffet (11am to 3pm) and dine-in, pick-up or delivery dinner items.
She considered what other kinds of meat work with the classic grilled sandwich besides bacon or ham. Red wine and sherry braised short ribs, join melted cheese on thick cut sourdough bread with pickled, caramelized onions and arugula.
“I want you to try my food and tell me what you think,” says AJ. “Ask for a sample, see how good it is. We won’t ever scrimp on quality,

Another dish that takes a fresh approach is the fish tacos with mango salsa, Asian slaw and a sriracha mayo to deliver a sweet and sour fusion taste. Of course a pub needs burgers, but it’s the Jolly Coachman’s multi-layers of flavours in burgers like the Big Blue and the Double Trouble that are worthy of being known as signature burgers. Then, a classic that has been part of the Jolly Coachman for years is the Sunday brunch buffet complete with a fresh baked goods section, extensive dessert table, custom omelet station and waffles made to order along with a wide range of expected, and unexpected tastes.

Chameleon The owners of Chameleon
in downtown Maple Ridge imagined a restaurant where everyone could afford to enjoy relaxed casual fine dining yet find something to love on the menu. Dr. Edward and Nancy Auersperg along with Mario Bitoiu have managed exactly that, a welcome, contemporary environment in the heart of the community that has been serving delicious food for four years. With a menu refreshed twice a year by kitchen leaders Eiichi Echo and Trina Partridge to bring out spring and fall dishes, there is something to delight the

taste buds whether it’s flat breads, burgers, steaks, seafood, or a new creation. Plus, Chameleon always offers special feature entrees and appetizers. “We are unique in providing that kind of variety,” Mario says. “Anyone can dine here without breaking their budget, yet enjoy a fine dining experience.” Crab gyozas are a popular appetizer that put a twist on the familiar. Like a standard vegetable or pork gyoza, these are filled with a tasty mixture, but here we find the meat of snow crab claws, carrots and celery mixed together in a gyoza bundle. The crab parcels are accompanied by Dijon
mustard and red cabbage sesame slaw. “We get our seafood locally as much as possible,” says Mario. “We go to Bruce’s Market. We also get our fruits and vegetables from the local market and a local farm.” The lobster mac and cheese is another twist on a familiar favourite. This decadent and definitely grown-up version makes use of a full tail of lobster, aged cheddar and caramelized onions. “People tell us our lobster mac and cheese is the best,” Mario notes. “It’s a wonderful compliment.”
For another taste from the sea, the pan seared scallops and prawns are served with a bacon corn hash to deliver a subtle smoky flavor alongside a creamy polenta with creole butter. Chameleon also offers an extensive wine list with about 100 wines chosen for their distinctive fit with the food options. There is even live, light jazz music on Wednesday evenings to bring a special touch to the evening for guests. Ideal for groups or intimate dinner for two, Chameleon is the best place for downtown dining close to home.

Not only does AJ Bhogal own two restaurants in Maple Ridge, they sit side-by-side in the downtown core on Lougheed Highway. Sopranos Pizza is another way for AJ to express his love of cooking for others. “Cooking is my passion,” he says. “I would like to learn all the different kinds of cooking in the world.” Second only to AJ’s passion for cooking, is his passion for serving people and he does this every day with pizza, pasta and chicken dishes that have become famous in the community. “We start from scratch every day,” AJ says.
“If you have a favourite pizza, and you order it all the time, we might end up naming it after you,” he says. Pizza is no different than any other food to AJ – all ingredients are as fresh as possible and local. “Pizza has to look great,” says AJ. “If it doesn’t look good, why would you eat it? My food tastes as great as it looks.” The next time you’re looking for a great, affordable meal, visit Soprano pizza for everything from pizza and pasta to ribs and chicken.
That means pizza sauce, Alfredo sauce, even béarnaise sauce are all made from scratch in the kitchen.
GM Restaurant community and love people. It was Joe’s mother that inspired him to bring these two loves to Maple Ridge by way of GM Restaurant.
“My mother, she was the one who told me nobody goes hungry if they come by her house, you give to them, and you get back,” Joe says. “That’s been my truth.” That truth has served Joe and his wife well as they’ve served popular Indian food since 1994. “We eat the same thing we serve our guests,” Joe says. “We don’t make anything different.”
Growing up in Mexico Heriberto was greatly influenced by his Mother´s cooking and Grandma´s Family Recipes, although he went to French culinary school, it was the taste of home that beckoned to him. Now, he applies that love of family made, full flavour Mexican dishes in his own kitchen at The Mexican Gourmet’s two locations. The menu at The Mexican Gourmet is composed by traditional dishes made from scratch, with authentic flavours and fresh ingredients. Some new items Heriberto is offering to his customers include his grandmother’s special dessert “Buñuelo”; The crispy sweet tortilla is served with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of their Home-made “Canela Syrup”.

Perhaps it’s because Joe knows the goodness that goes into each and every dish they prepare. “We buy everything fresh locally,” he notes. “We have everything in Maple Ridge.” When guests arrive at GM, they’ll notice they are usually greeted like old friends, or family whether it’s for dine-in or take-out. The family atmosphere carries through into the kitchen where many of the staff have been with the restaurant for a number of years. “They make the food so good,” Joe says of his cooking team. “We make it first –
you only have to show them once – then they make it even better.” Some of the dishes at GM come from weekly specials Joe and Swarnjit try. The popular ones make it to the next version of the menu and some classics will always remain. “If someone wants vegetarian options, we will recommend the lentil dahl with onion, ginger and garlic. It’s cooked slowly.” says Joe. “Or we might suggest the veggie vindaloo with fresh mixed vegetables and spices.” For those looking for meat dishes, the beef tikka masala or butter chicken may be
offered. “We cater to all tastes,” notes Joe. There are sampler platters as well. The Tour of India comes in a vegetarian or meat version with a wide range of dishes, naan bread and rice. After the dinner rush, a number of guests stop in for chai tea and cheesecake. Swarnjit makes the almost 20 types of cheesecakes herself and has a hard time keeping up with demand. Whether for Indian food or a delicious dessert, the Shah family invite you to join them at GM Restaurant.

The Keg Steakhouse + Bar For more than 30 years,
The Keg Steakhouse + Bar has been serving up a casual, finedining experience locals and visitors to the community have come to expect. It’s a standard that was set long ago when it came to visiting any Keg – great food, exceptional service and value inherent in the experience itself.
Ryan van Baal, General Manager and owner is familiar with customer expectations for an evening at The Keg. Exceeding those expectation is something each of his team members is trained to do from their very first shift. “We’re a steakhouse, it’s what we do,” Ryan says. “So we all work towards being the best steakhouse we can be.” Obviously, as a steakhouse, everything starts with steak and The Keg even has what it refers to as its own “Steak Program” according to Ryan. “We call it steakology internally,” he says. ”Stea• proofsks are aged at minimum of 14 days, but it all depends on the cut.” The steak program is about more than perfectly aged meat.
It also includes how the steaks are individually cut, how they are prepared and the fact that the meat is always AAA beef or better sourced from Canada first. “There are a lot of processes we do internally at The Keg to deliver that great steak experience you come here for,” Ryan notes. “We do things other restaurants don’t and we’re not going to change that. The price of beef may increase in the marketplace, but we won’t change how we do things and we certainly won’t ever serve lesser quality products to cut costs.” Another popular item on the menu is the prime rib and as Ryan explains, the whole roasts are marinated for 24 hours before being slow roasted all day to be served at medium rare that night. Learning how to cook the perfect Keg steak, prime rib, chicken Oscar, lobster or other dish comes from an in-house training program specific to the steakhouse and bar’s unique needs. Most everyone working in the kitchen started there years before, learning The Keg way to do things right.
20640 DEWDNEY TRUNK ROAD | 604-465-8911
“Our Keg standard is taught in-house,” says Ryan. “That way, no matter what Keg you go to, the food experience is going to be the same. You’re going to get that exceptional level of quality and high-end, but relaxed dining experience every time. We create our own cooks and that ensures they have enthusiasm and pride in what they prepare.” While the food and experience is fine-dining, Ryan reminds guests coming to The Keg is a casual atmosphere where you can “come as you are” to either the restaurant or lounge areas of the steakhouse. Whether the intent is for delicious food, libations or both, servers, hosts and bus-staff are all trained to ensure the best evening out possible. “Every one of our staff can answer your questions about the menu,” he says. “They can be prideful of every single item they serve their customers because they know everything that goes into it. I want my team to know they are what makes a great experience and they all take that very seriously.” Ryan explains that almost all of The Keg’s beverages can be Keg-sized which means for
cocktails, double the alcohol, but not double the price. The wine list is chosen by Keg wine experts to ensure an exceptional offering of reds and whites by the bottle or by the glass, regular or Keg-sized. Don’t forget the Billy Miner Pie for dessert, or, for a lighter sweet-tooth consider one of the mini dessert menu options that deliver a decadent dessert in a two or three-bite size. While some things customers have come to expect from The Keg (like the Baseball steak) will always be a standard on the menu, there are changes from time to time to give an expanded food experience to guests. New menu items include a Portabello Mushroom casual plate, an increased number of tasty sauces and sides and a California Greens salad. The Maple Ridge Keg, like all Keg locations, prides itself on delivering exceptional value, satisfying meals and amazing experiences whether it’s a special occasion or simply a weekday treat. Everyone at The Keg is looking forward to serving you.

Al Bhat, owner of Smile Thai has a hard time pointing to a single signature dish on his menu, because everything the restaurant serves is popular.
“We focus on quality at all times,” says Al. “There is no cutting corners when it comes to quality. We believe in consistency and keeping our customers happy.”
“From travelling and serving Vancouverites over the years, I’ve learned the flavours that meet tastebuds,” Al says. “When people tell us how much they love our food, it puts a smile on my face.”
Another favourite dish is the Drunken Noodles or Pad Kee Mao which are rice noodles combined with finely minced vegetables, basil and dark soya to create delicious flavours that blend perfectly.
Smiling is common at the family-run business. Everyone knows how important it is to prepare and store ingredients to meet the exacting standards required. There is nothing hidden at Smile Thai. In fact, the restaurant is open to the kitchen area.
There is never any MSG or dairy in any of the dishes – and Al always strives to meet allergy and dietary concerns.
You can see dishes like the Garlic Beef and Red Curry being prepared. This red curry paste and coconut milk dish includes the crunch of bamboo with red and green pepper and lots of fragrant basil. It can also be made with chicken or seafood.
“We are more healthy now,” Simon says. “There is no added MSG* in the food, we use less oils and there is less salt; but it’s still a family restaurant. We want families to be comfortable here.” Simon’s cooking team is also prepared to meet allergies or sensitivities and other dietary needs.

Making customers happy is what
George Niavis of Bella Vita focuses on. Through the restaurant’s dining room and the Odyssey Room bistro, George gives customers the food they love in an environment where they are comfortable. “If we do everything right, our customers leave happy and to me, that is the most important thing,” he says. Customers may prefer the pub-style atmosphere of the bistro with TVs and a bar, and if they like, they can order the same food as is available in the dining room. Intimate meals for two or a group dinner are ideal in the dining room. No matter which side of the restaurant, the food at Bella Vita delivers excellent flavor and Maple Ridge-sized portions giving value for the money.

“Someone may not know there is gluten in soy sauce,” he says. “When we find out someone has a dietary concern, we will make food recommendations.” Meeting needs also means ensuring the freshest food possible. Pick-up and delivery orders are treated the same as eat-in guests: food is prepared as ordered. For those dining from the buffet, Simon stocks it in smaller portions so that the food is fresh – new batches are added as needed.

the kitchen uses is the freshest possible. “We want our customers to enjoy eating here,” says Simon. “People don’t have to rush. When they are done, we want to know they are satisfied and happy; that they had a great relaxing meal.”
“We are always watching the buffet,” notes Simon. “We want to make sure the food is perfect.”
Fresh ingredients are apparent in dishes like the wonton soup which is made from daily-created soup stock. Then there are a few specialty items on the dinner buffet: seafood favourites like mussels, a breaded deep-fried prawn and another in-shell prawn that is lightly breaded with a chili sauce batter before being fried.
Monitoring the buffet actually starts with the ingredients. Simon ensures everything
“Customers love peeling the shells off,” Simon notes.

Meadow Gardens One of the great
things about dining at Meadow Gardens Golf Club is the incredible flexibility in food options. Whether it’s a bite before hitting the course, drinks and appies after work or a gala event for a couple hundred friends, the team at Meadow Gardens is dedicated to making your experience the best it can be. Food creations begin in the kitchen with Executive Chef Anthony Arnold. “We work very hard to meet the tastes of our members and guests,” says Chef Anthony. Meeting those diverse tastes can be challenging with so many service points. Meadow Gardens serves guests in the Loft Restaurant, at the Wedge Bar & Grill, the on-course gazebo and in three banquet rooms. Yet, this culinary team, together with the service staff, manages to make every meal a great one. From chili and burgers to pasta entrees and beef tenderloin, Chef Anthony focuses on making the majority of items in-house. “We hand pull our own fries,” he says. “And we make our own soup here every single day. It’s something our members expect.”

Certainly, the menu itself includes a significant range of items, but Chef Anthony also supplements these options with a seasonal fresh sheet. The fresh sheet may focus on a special in-season item like fresh halibut, or wild mushrooms, or it may include member favourites like a unique schnitzel creation or a Thai noodle chicken salad. This year’s spring fresh sheet features a pistachio-crusted rack of lamb served with wild mushroom risotto, steamed vegetables and a rosemary red wine just. Pasta is also popular at Meadow Gardens with spaghetti Bolognese topping the list as well as the scallop and prawn linguine. The seafood pasta favourite is made with a rich garlic and onion cream sauce in a white wine base and is served with a tomato concasse. It doesn’t matter what time of day a craving hits. Chef Anthony and his team are prepared to serve breakfast meals for dinner and dinner entrees in the morning. And remember, a meal at Meadow Gardens is far from being just for members. Anyone can come in and dine at the Loft. “We want people to have the meal they want and to enjoy it,”
Chef Anthony says. “We also offer a soup and sandwich special everyday which appeals to a lunch crowd.” Each of Chef Anthony’s dishes has an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients and portions that deliver good value. Even the 6 oz. steak sandwich is made from Canadian beef and the seafood used at Meadow Gardens is always wild – never farmed. Crab cakes are a much-enjoyed appetizer that makes use of cream cheese to bring extra flavor to the crab and finely diced vegetables. Another favoured appetizer is the bruschetta made from concasse tomatoes, Grana Podano cheese, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic reduction served on bite-sized crustini. For dessert, try the lemon curd tart complete with whip cream and blueberry compote. Events at Meadow Gardens allow for as much choice as an intimate dinner for two. Event coordinator Kayla Bell will walk you through room options while gaining an understanding of your desires. “We really commit ourselves to meeting the wishes of our guests,” Kayla says. “No matter what the request, we always
want to deliver that vision.” All shapes and sizes of events can be held at Meadow Gardens from a group of 40 up to 300, weddings to corporate gatherings. Menus range in flexibility as well with options of soup and sandwich bars or pasta stations all the way to plated prime rib dinners served to each guest. Cultural, allergy and dietary preferences can all be accommodated as well. “Even if something isn’t a menu option, just ask us, we want to make your event perfect,” Kayla notes. “It’s important to us to work with you to make everything exactly as you’ve envisioned it.” That help even includes arranging certain outside vendors like decorators, photographers, or florists. Kayla has a list of preferred vendors that she works with and can recommend to clients. “My goal is to make planning the event easy for our guests,” Kayla says. “I want to break down each part of their vision with them to make sure we are covering all of the needs. We do that, because it’s important to us to make every experience here amazing.”

Shinobi If you’ve ever been to
Shinobi Japanese Restaurant you’ve heard the excited greeting as you walk in the door. It’s more than just a routine, it’s the spirit of owner and head chef Chris Lee shining through his business. “I like it when my customers enjoy the food we serve them,” Chris, a 15-year chef says. “It’s my happiness.” That happiness is ingrained in every aspect of what Shinobi does and it’s been this way for the seven years the restaurant has been serving customers in downtown Maple Ridge. “I am so thankful to my customers that they love my food and they love the restaurant,” says Chris. “Sometimes I feel like they are my family. We always try to do our best – the chefs, servers, everybody. We want our customers to feel welcome and happy here.” Chris relies on his team to make sure every part of a visit to Shinobi is perfect whether it’s recommending food choices or inviting customers in. He counts on his servers to tell him how customer tastes are changing and see what new dishes are popular.
“The staff are very kind,” Chris says. “They know how to welcome their customers. To all of us, the food comes second to treating our customers right, but of course the food absolutely must be fresh and excellent.” Chris and his family came to Maple Ridge because of the community. His son goes to Meadowridge School and Chris found a connection with people in the region. “It felt kind of like my old neighbourhood,” He says. Knowing he was part of the community allowed Chris to explore his passion for food and offer something a little bit different to his customers. As a chef, he is constantly exploring cook books, food trends and the latest culinary discoveries of all kinds, not just those in Japanese food. He then takes that learning and applies it to the offerings at Shinobi. One of Chris’s favourite creations is the Salmon Tataki salad. Made with seared salmon sashimi, mixed green salad and a soy mustard dressing, there is nothing like it anywhere else. “I created that,” Chris said. “It’s very special to me. When
11867, 224TH ST, MAPLE RIDGE | 604-466-1811 I’m making food, I change it a little bit to make it different and unique.” Rolls and sauces, even presentation of the food comes from ideas Chris finds and makes his own. He’s always thinking about what his customers might like. The plate for two is a very affordable way to try different types of Japanese food: sashimi, rolls and nigiri are complemented with miso soup, ebi sunomono and a four-piece tempura appetizer. One of the three family boats is a meal for three people with miso soup to start, numerous types of sashimi, rolls and nigiri followed with ice cream for dessert. Lunch boxes and dinner plates are also value-priced, complete meal options. Another creation is the Long Island Roll. Inside is the delicious combination of prawn tempura, cream cheese, avocado and cucumber, while the outside, the roll is topped with baked spicy crabmeat, scallop, corn with cheese, tempura batter sprinkles and a final topping of tobiko. Teriyaki is a commonly ordered dish and at Shinobi, you’ll find teriyaki chicken, beef, vegetables, salmon and seafood choic-
es. It’s always served with miso soup, rice and a bed of grilled bean sprouts, cabbage and onion. Service at Shinobi comes down to meeting the customer’s wishes. “We want our customers to come back,” Chris says. “So I need to make sure they are smiling and satisfied at the end of their visit. My staff do a wonderful job at this. When customers like the food, I know I’m doing a good job for them.” Shinobi is a bustling environment with excitement and people in and out. Because it’s hard for Chris to see his customers from behind the sushi bar, he enjoys hearing the sounds and getting feedback from his staff. “It’s alive in here and I like it that way,” Chris says. “I want to thank my customers for coming here,” notes Chris. “It’s wonderful that the people of Maple Ridge love my restaurant, food and staff.” In the heart of downtown, Shinobi is always filled with life, great fresh food, delicious new creations and wonderful people.

A sibling duo, born and raised in Maple Ridge, will be attending the Banff World Media Festival this summer after winning the STORYHIVE digital short scholarship for their digital short film The Dishwasher. Matt David Johnson, story writer and director for the short, will also receive customized career training, and the short film will air on select Telus platforms. Matt and his sister Alexz Johnson competed against 30 other filmmakers from the province and Alberta. People could vote for their favourite film until March 4, and STORYHIVE chose one winning film from B.C. and Alberta. Matt created the script and directed the short, while Alexz produced and created the soundtrack for the film. The short film, Matt said, is a “visual piece that feels very cinematic, with minimum dialogue. The short’s central character, a dishwasher at a “greasy restaurant is accepted into a prestigious cooking academy, but struggles. With the help of a new friend, a young prostitute in the area, he trades meals for her culinary advice. So far, the film has gained a positive response from the general public. Matt said one person was even “driven to tears. “My goal is to resonate emotionally [with] people, the director said. He added that filming the short in various locations in Vancouver – a task that was done in a mere three

Matt said working alongside his sister was also an experience to remember. “Working with my sister was a thrill, he shared. “Her industry training has been on the other side of the coin. We had to learn quickly to trust each other. During the first day of filming, Matt said, the cast and crew finished the day by handing out the 100 sandwiches featured in an earlier scene. This has all been done by volunteers. In general, “Our dog adoptions are phenomenal,” the manager said, with the average dog being adopted within about two days from when they become adoptable. All adoption fees include vaccination, deworming, flea treatment, spaying or neutering, a microchip with lifetime registration, one free vet visit, six weeks of insurance, and a bag of Hill’s Science Diet dog food. Although the society doesn’t conduct at-home checks post adoption, follow-up phone calls are made. “We want to make sure they understand that they can follow up with us,” Dunlop added. She noted that the Facebook page, BC SPCA Maple Ridge Branch, is a good place to read about updates on the shelter. “We just heard on Facebook that one lady sent updates that they have their puppies in training,” the manager said.

Dinah should go into a fairly quiet home where she won’t be overwhelmed with noise and chaos. Her little body will surely keep someone’s lap very warm on a cold winters night.

A Hope resident recently helped a Maple Ridge friend conquer the complications of multiple sclerosis. Douglas Hondo Stroyan, president of the Hope Rotary Club, sent a letter on behalf of his longtime friend, Maple Ridge resident Greg Turnbull, to petition the Rick Hansen Foundation for the Quality of Life Grant. The grant was given to Turnbull after he made an application to the foundation based on Stroyan’s initial inquiry for the purchase of a scooter. “I have done something for a friend that anyone else would have done,” Stroyan said. The mobility aid will help Turnbull enjoy a higher quality of living, as he continues to fight for and champion the cause of MS, while paying for expensive and progressive treatments not covered by government health insurance. Stroyan and Turnbull’s friendship started at the Scott Road Keg in the early 1980s, where the team raised more than $18,000 for Rick Hansen’s Man-In-Motion tour in 1985. Greg Turnbull With Hondo’s ingenuity and business acumen, he issued a challenge to all the Keg restaurants, during Hansen’s 26 month tour. His efforts did not go unrealized, and upon Hansen’s return home, Stroyan presented the foundation with another cheque totaling $80,000 for spinal cord research. Since the Keg days, Turnbull was diagnosed with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis almost two decades ago, just as he was becoming a father.

Multi-sport athlete wins Aboriginal Youth award Marquesis Haintz will receive the award in Victoria on March 21. ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@gmail.com
At 13 years old, Marquesis Haintz has a lot to be proud of. The Pitt Meadows resident has balanced her time to excel in her academics, give back to her community, and compete in the four sports of cross-country, track and field, soccer, and her new passion of wrestling. Now, Haintz, who is Hwlitsum First Nations, is one of 12 Aboriginal athletes from across the province being presented with the first Premier’s Award for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport for her overall achievements both in competition and in her community. “It’s pretty cool,” Haintz said about the award. “I haven’t gotten an award this big.” Award winners, all 24 years old or younger, were chosen by a selection committee using the
five criteria of sport achievements, leadership qualities, education, cultural awareness, and future goals. The application for the award also required three reference letters to speak on the nominees achievements. In one letter, Maple Ridge Secondary school’s track and field and cross-country coach Ken Elphick credited Haintz’s “great attitude, her incredible athletic ability, and her undeniable work ethic.” “I feel her success is the product of her attitude,” he added. When Haintz read the letters from Elphick and other coaches, she said, she was able to reflect on her accomplishments. “I was pretty happy with how they thought I’ve been doing,” she said. Haintz’s sports achievements include earning BC Junior Development Athletics awards, which recognize the top track and field athletes in the province, during three of the five seasons she has competed. In 2015, she won two of these awards for her performances in the 1200m (3:52.24 min.), and the 2000m (6:58.79 min.).

the U14 age group. During the B.C. high school Cross Country Championships in November, the Grade 8 student competed in the junior category (Grade 9 and 10), and placed in the top 50 out of 200 runners.
Most recently, at the provincial high school championships for wrestling, Haintz represented Maple Ridge Secondary school and placed second on the mat in the 40 kilogram weight class. On the field, Haintz plays for West Coast Auto Group Football Club’s U14 Metro team as a midfielder, as well as referees for the club, and won Small-Sided Games Referee of the Year, for the 2014-15 season. In school, the Grade 8 gives back to her community through her school’s Aboriginal Cultural Leadership club. She hopes to “inspire others” and be “a role model for other Aboriginal youth,” she said, noting that these goals are very important to her. Haintz will receive the award in Victoria on March 21, during a presentation at the 2016 Gathering Our Voices Aboriginal Youth Conference. Award winners will also get to meet Premier Christy Clark, she said. Haintz will have the opportunity to attend an Aboriginal Youth Sport Leadership forum, which will be hosted in conjunction with the conference.

WATER MAIN FLUSHING The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning February 15, 2016. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434.
