or thousands of years, the Stó:lo village of Ts’qols and, later, the town of Hope have played an integral role in the history of British Columbia. Our place at the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers and at the edge of the Fraser Canyon makes Hope a natural stopping point along the journey for anyone travelling between the interior and the coast.

In 1848, this area was described by Hudson’s Bay Company employees as the “best hope” for finding an inland trade route that bypassed the Fraser Canyon. Thus, a European settlement and its name were born. Stó:lo and Nlaka’pamux guides subsequently helped established what is now the 74 km HBC (1849) Heritage Trail. Mining and logging were the primary industries throughout the 20th century. In the last decade, tourism has overshadowed resource extraction to become the top industry. In 2016, the Hope Visitor Centre and Museum will be moving into the historic CNR (Canadian National Railway) Station House.The Station House was completed in 1916 and originally sat on the corner of 5th Avenue and Hudson’s Bay Street. In the 1980s, a group of volunteers moved it to its current location. Hope’s natural beauty and pristine wilderness continues to evoke a sense of hope in visitors and residents as they dwell in the shadow of giants and walk in the footsteps of B.C.’s diverse history.

he town of Hope sits on traditional Stó:lo territory. Thousands of years of Stó:lo and Nlaka’pamux life are written into the rivers and mountains of Hope and the surrounding area. Prior to European settlement, the thriving Stó:lo village of Ts’qo:ls existed on the current townsite. Stó:lo are part of the Halq’eméylem language group. Halq’eméylem is part of the Coast Salish family of languages, and speakers in our area speak an Upriver dialect. “Stó:lo” is the Halq’eméylem word for the [Fraser] river, thus Stó:lo are “the river people.” At its lowest point in the 20th century, there were approximately five fluent Halq’eméylem speakers. Thanks to a concerted effort by the Stó:lo Nation and the school district, there is increasingly more traditional language training. Halq’eméylem classes are now part of elementary education in the district. The northern section of the Fraser Canyon (around Hell’s Gate and Boston Bar) is traditional Nlaka’pamux territory. The traditional language of the Nlaka’pamux is nłeʔkepmxcin. Stó:lo history in this area goes back 9000 years. Salmon and cedar allowed for permanent settlements and an elaborate social system. When the HBC set up Fort Hope in 1848 and 30,000 miners flooded the region in 1858, life was forever changed in the Fraser Canyon. Initially, the first peoples retained significant political power thanks in part to their knowledge of inland trading routes.

egardless of the bike you have or your experience, Hope has a place for all visitors to ride.

For cross-country cyclists, Hope is a popular destination to stop for the night as it offers some respite before the mountains to the Interior. For local and single-day riders, the steep hills outside of town offer some of the most challenging (and rewarding) riding in the area. Our mountain bike community has been growing over the last five years and new trails are being built all the time. With the addition of the Bike Park (behind the recreation centre), riders are now able to work on their skills before undertaking some of the more challenging trails in the mountains around town. See Bike Park story on page 30. Families, beginners, and those looking for a restful day on the bike will also find a variety of rides to do in and around Hope. Below you will find some of the local favourites for all types of riders and experience levels. For more information on trails and maps of the area, visit the Hope Visitor Centre. Note that all routes are multiuser and cyclists must adhere to the rules of the road. ROAD Hope Slide Distance: 18 km (one way) Advanced The ride to the Hope Slide is a great training ride for anyone endeavouring to do long-distance riding as well as a fun challenge 10 â&#x20AC;&#x192; Hope Visitor Guide 2016

for those who enjoy the climb as much as the descent. Cyclists encounter a six per cent grade as soon as they reach the highway and do not stop climbing until they reach the Hope Slide rest area. This portion of Highway 3 offers relatively wide shoulders. Airport Distance: 10 km (one way) Beginner/low-intermediate Cyclists can either leave from downtown for a longer ride that includes Richmond Hill (Flood-Hope Road) or can drive to the airport and enjoy a three kilometre loop with no hills or traffic. The 20 km loop from downtown is an easy introduction to roadriding that offers spectacular views of gliders around the airport. Town Bike Route Distance: 7 km Beginner The marked bike path around town leads riders of any skill level past Memorial Park, Christ Church, the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers, and the Hope Recreation Complex. LIGHT TRAILS Kettle Valley Railway: Hope-Othello Distance: 8 km (roundtrip) Beginner This portion of the Kettle Valley Railway offers beginner trail riders an easy introduction to the KVR. This abandoned railway bed is now used for biking and hiking,

and entrances to the trail can be accessed at various points along the route. More adventurous cyclists may want to under take the multi-day journey from Hope to Midway along the old railbed, but day riders will enjoy the nearly flat, doublewide trail that passes through the Othello Tunnels. Rotary Nature Trails Distance: 2 km (roundtrip) Beginner With a few more twists and turns than the Kettle Valley Railway, the Rotary Nature Trails is a fun place to ride with kids and anyone who is new to trail riding. The trail follows the Coquihalla River, so it is a good place to see salmon spawning. It also connects to the Town Bike Route. Thacker Regional Park Distance: 1 km (roundtrip) Beginner Thacker Regional Park is an old stretch of rail-bed, so it is flat and suitable for families. The trail follows the marsh and is a good place to see a variety of wildlife. Riders can connect with the Kettle Valley Railway at the end of the Thacker Regional Park to make a longer ride. MOUNTAIN BIKING Hope Bike Park Beginner-advanced The skills park is the newest addition to the mountain biking scene in Hope. Opened in 2015, the park allows riders of all skill

levels to practice their skills for the more advanced trails in the mountains. Elements include pump tracks, a wall ride, and dir t jumps. For more information on the bike park, see page 30. Mt. Hope Lookout Distance: 3 km (roundtrip) Advanced The mountain bike trails on Mount Hope star t just below the hikers’ trail-head and at points crosses the hiking trail. The advanced trail has some man-made features and follows the Joan Greenwood Loop. HBC 1848 Heritage Trail Distance: 12 km (return) Intermediate The HBC Trail from Peers Creek is open to mountain bikers to the first campground (below Manson’s Ridge). The trail is mostly double-track. There is a shor t stretch of rock-slide near the beginning of the trail (25 m) that riders may have to hike past. BMX Hope Skateboard Park The skateboard park continues to be a popular spot for BMXers. Located behind the Hope Recreation Complex, it is close to the Bike Park. An expansion is being planned for the park, so veteran riders will have new features in the coming years. Hope Visitor Guide 2016

Rambo: First Blood Filming In Hope

9. Intersection near Highway 1 Exit 170.This is where Rambo was greeted by Hope’s original “Welcome to Hope’’ archway as he came into town. Remnants of the archway can still be seen at the Hope Station House and Coquihalla Campground.

ver 30 years ago, Hollywood came north and transformed Hope into a small American town. The popular Rambo franchise continues to draw First Blood fans to town for a chance to visit some of the key filming locations, which are mapped out on page 13. 2. Trying to escape from police, Rambo – on a stolen motorcycle – flies over the train tracks at Third Avenue. 3. With the police in hot pursuit, Rambo rides along Hudson Bay Street, passing Hope’s H-tree at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Hudson Bay Street. 4. The sheriff ’s office was located in front of District Hall, at the corner of Wallace Street and Third Avenue. It has since been moved (see #8).

10. Location of the gas station that Rambo blew up as a diversion.The station was built specifically to be destroyed. 11. Site of the bridge to Portland where the sheriff drops off the drifter. The original bridge was taken down in 2011 and a kiosk now stands at the picnic area paying homage to the movie which made the site famous.

5. The current location of Treehouse Health Foods was temporarily renamed Mountain State Savings. Across Third Avenue from the bank, a Coke billboard was placed on the building’s roof to provide a hiding place for the crew’s cameras.

12. Othello Tunnels – known as Chapman Gorge in the movie. Here, the police officer falls out of the helicopter. See where Rambo clung for his life as he hung precariously on the rock walls of the gorge (between tunnels one and two). Col.Trautman also located his base camp near here while tracking down John Rambo.

6. Rambo rode his stolen motorcycle down the sidewalk in front of businesses on the north side of Wallace Street, between Fraser and Third avenues.

13. When evading capture on a stolen motorcycle, Rambo passes through the Chevron parking lot.The distinctive roofline of what is now Hope Pizza Place can be seen in the background of the scene.

7. The Outpost gun shop was built in the intersection of Commission Street and Third Avenue. It was destroyed during filming.

14. Station House - In the movie, Station House was still at the corner of Hudson Bay Street and Fifth Avenue (see #3).

HBC (1849) Heritage Trail I

n 2016, the 74 km HBC (1849) Heritage Trail will join the ranks of the West Coast Trail, Juan de Fuca Trail, and Stein Valley as epic, multiday, bucket-list hikes in British Columbia. The trail was the Hudson’s Bay Company’s first overland route connecting B.C.’s coast and interior. Prior to HBC use, First Nations had been traversing the Tulameen Plateau for centuries. The HBC Trail can be hiked over several days or in a series of day trips. Trail Distances (traveling east – Hope to Tulameen). Access points: Peers Creek, Sowaqua Creek, and Jacobson Lake. Camps have bear caches and pit toilets. This is a short walk winding through a marshland habitat. Complete with walkways and bridges, this ecologicallysensitive area is filled with spawning salmon every fall.

Mount Hope Lookout (or ‘The Hope Hustle’) is Hope’s answer to the Grouse Grind in North Vancouver. The trail offers spectacular views of Hope from two viewpoints and ends at the highest viewpoint, which includes benches and interpretive signs.

Needle Peak and Flatiron are classic hikes in the Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area. For hikers not wanting to undertake the scramble to the impressive summit of Needle Peak, the trail veers right past a lake and up to Flatiron – which has impressive views itself.

Whitewater Rafting A

t the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla Rivers and within easy driving distance of the Thompson, Nahatlatch, and Chilliwack rivers, Hope is a haven for rafting enthusiasts and provides an excellent base camp for single or multi-day rafting trips. Depending on snow pack and river levels, rafting in the Hope area starts in May/June on the Coquihalla and Nahatlatch Rivers. These rivers typically only run until July 1, so there’s a limited time to paddle some of B.C.’s wildest rivers.

waves that make the Thompson trip an unbeatable adventure. For those wanting a chance to paddle through history, power trips down the Mighty Fraser River run all summer. The Fraser is a Canadian Heritage River and one of the longest in Canada (1,375 km). It was an integral part of First Nations culture, brigade history, and the colonization of British Columbia. The best time to run the Fraser is late July to early September. Year-round rafting is offered on the Chilliwack River.

If you miss the early season rapids, rafting companies in the area run the Fraser and Thompson rivers all summer.

Family-run rafting companies with experienced guides are here to help visitors of all skill and comfort levels find a suitable trip.

he Fraser River salmon runs draw hundreds of fishermen from all over the Lower Mainland. Sockeye salmon run throughout the summer, spring salmon run from May to December, and pink salmon run in the fall. Public access points in Hope include Wardle Street, Rupert Street, and the north end of the Fraser Bridge. Another major public access point is F.H. Barber Provincial Park, which is located off Highway 1 west of Hope at exit 153 (Laidlaw/Jones Lake). The Fraser River is also known for its sturgeon fishing with many guides operating fishing excursions in the region. Anglers travel from around the globe for an opportunity to battle the largest freshwater fish in the world. These prehistoric fish can be caught in the Fraser River throughout the year, but the best months are April to October. Kawkawa Lake is home to one of the most unique fisheries in the Upper Fraser Valley with more than 10 different species. Lake of the Woods is stocked annually with rainbow trout. Jones, Ross, and Silver lakes are also popular spots for wilderness camping and fishing. For the fly fisher, the Skagit River is considered by some to be the best dry fly stream in the province. Silver Creek is steelhead and rainbow trout heaven and the Coquihalla River offers steelhead and dolly varden.

MEMORIAL PARK

Parks & Gardens Memorial Park Memorial Park features some of Hope’s original and most iconic chainsaw carvings. It is a vibrant, multi-user park that forms the hub of Hope’s downtown core. The park has a bandstand, picnic area, playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, street hockey courts, restrooms, and a lit pathway. Interpretive signage offers more information on the history of the area. Japanese Friendship Garden The Japanese Friendship Garden (adjacent to Memorial Park) was built in 1991 and is dedicated to the Japanese-Canadians who were sent to internment camps during the Second World War. From 1942 to1946, 2300 Japanese-Canadians were interned 23 kilometres east of Hope at Tashme (now Sunshine Valley). The garden is a place to find peace and tranquility below the Japanese cherry blossom tree or by the waterfall filled pond. Centennial Park Centennial Park – at the foot of Wallace Street on Water Avenue – offers travellers beautiful views of the Fraser River. Enjoy a relaxing break, learn a little history, or watch the sun set over the river from the viewing deck, constructed by the Hope Rotary Club. Directly across from the park (though inaccessible to visitors) is Welqamex Island. Archaeological discoveries on the island include a large Stó:lo village with many pit houses. The island is also home to blue heron nesting sites.

August 12-14, 2016 The Fat Dog 120 Trail Race through Skagit Valley and Manning Park is considered the most scenic ultra race in Canada. Racers gain 8,672.7 metres in elevation, which is only 175.3 metres less than Everest!

kagit Valley Provincial Park was born when Seattle City Lights attempted to raise the Ross Dam and flood the Skagit Valley. A herculean international effort followed as loggers (led by Curly Chittenden), environmentalists, and outdoor enthusiasts opposed the project and lobbied government to preserve this pristine region of British Columbia. For more information on the history of the park, check out the Skagit Wedge at the corner of Flood-Hope and Silver Skagit roads. Silver and Ross lakes are the most popular areas in park and offer the best swimming and paddling. Ross Lake is actually a reservoir whose levels change throughout the year. One can expect to find the reservoir full by July 1 each year. When the water level is low, visitors can still see the stumps of trees that were logged to make way for the rising water.

of the park, and to support a long-standing garbage removal initiative. Garbage cans throughout the Skagit Valley are emptied by volunteers during the summer. Friends of the Skagit supports that initiative by handing out garbage bags to users on weekends and encouraging them pack out what they pack in. Skagit Valley is one of the most popular camping destinations in the area. Four campgrounds offer basic amenities (well-water only and no electricity). Whitworth Horse Camp also offers individual corrals and hitching rails. In addition to camping, the park boasts amazing swimming, paddling, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Visitors looking for a multi-day hike or epic trail run should check out the Skyline II and Skagit River trails.

esigned by engineer Andrew McCulloch, the five tunnels were built through solid granite cliffs between 1911 and 1916 to complete the Kettle Valley Railway. The Othello Tunnels in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park are a must-see when visiting Hope. As a result of rock falls within the tunnels over the winter months, B.C. Parks closes the tunnels seasonally. The parking lot and Hope-Nicola Valley Trail remain open throughout the year. While visitors cannot go through the tunnels in the winter, the short walk from the parking lot to the mouth of the first tunnel is well worth it for those who have never seen it. In the summer, visitors can walk the length of the tunnels and return the way they came or loop back over the Hope-Nicola Valley Trail. Flashlights are recommended for cyclists and those who are scared of the dark or have mobility issues. The ground is uneven in the tunnels 24 â&#x20AC;&#x192; Hope Visitor Guide 2016

due to erosion caused by dripping water and some of the tunnels are quite dark. The park has picnic areas, benches, and pit-toilets. Kettle Valley Railway

2016

The Othello Tunnels opened on July 31, 1916. This marked the completion of the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR). The KVR linked BC’s interior with the coast and made it possible to transport resources without going through the United States. Constant washouts plagued the railway and caused the route to close in 1959. The Coquihalla Highway (1986) follows the original KVR route very closely. In fact, the highway was built on the old railbed in some sections. The topography of the land made it impossible to build elsewhere. Chief Engineer Andrew McCulloch named the stations along the Coquihalla subdivision after Shakespearean characters. Today, drivers will see highway exits and bridges named for Romeo, Juliet, Iago, Portia, Lear, Jessica, and Othello. 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the tunnels and the completion of the KVR. Join Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning for cycling trips along the KVR from the Coquihalla Summit to Portia, and guided walks through the tunnels to mark the anniversary. almon spend their early life in rivers and streams before migrating to the Pacific Ocean. Adult salmon later return to the same area where they hatched, guided largely by smell, to spawn and die. Though the exact dates can vary, the major salmon run typically starts in Hope in late September.

Kawkawa Lake Kawkawa Lake Municipal Park is the perfect place to spend the afternoon swimming, waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, or cliff-jumping. With a boat launch, boat-accessible cliffs, and a roped off swimming area, Kawkawa Lake is a family’s dream. First Beach also boasts a playground, picnic tables, and washroom facilities for those spending the whole day on the water. There are no boat rentals or lifeguard on duty. Kawkawa Lake is 10 minutes from downtown Hope along Kawkawa Lake Road. Kawkawa Creek in Thacker Regional Park For families looking to get away from large crowds, Kawkawa Creek is a great place to relax. Known locally as Sucker’s Creek, it offers a shallow water play area and a sandy beach. The best time of the year to visit Kawkawa Creek for swimming is mid-to-late summer.

Hope. As motors are prohibited, it is a quiet place for both swimmers and paddlers. Confident swimmers can access rocks on the west side of the lake. There is no public boat rental available. A day-use area includes picnic tables and washrooms. Lake of the Woods is five minutes north of Hope on Highway 1. Silver Lake

Lake of the Woods

Silver Lake is located in Silver Lake Provincial Park, 12 kilometres south of Hope. Access to the boat launch (electric motors only) and dayuse area is through Silver Lake Campground. A spectacular mountain backdrop awaits swimmers and paddlers in this cooler lake.

Panning Instructions:

To start, fill the pan with gravel then submerge it in slow moving water. Keep the pan in the water, tip it slightly away and swirl the mixture. Lighter material will be the first to fall out, leaving behind the gold. A common novice mistake is to try panning river sand. Bigger gold flakes can be found in gravel or coarse sand.

Our diverse history has also made Hope a popular location for documentary filming. In 2009, local filmmaker Eva Wunderman chronicled the 1858 conflict between resident First Nations and European gold seekers in the documentary Canyon War.

More than 15 feature films (including Shoot to Kill, Hope Springs, The Stickup, and Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog) have been filmed in the area. Most recently, the latest instalment of Planet of the Apes was filmed at Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park in fall 2015.

Our rugged terrain is perhaps most highlighted in the Discovery Channel show Highway Thru Hell. The series follows Jamie Davis’ crew as they work to keep local highways open for truckers during unpredictable winter weather.

Christ Church C

hrist Church National Historic Site at 681 Fraser Avenue is the oldest operating church on mainland British Columbia. Built by the Royal Engineers and consecrated in 1861, the Anglican Church was designed to bring civilization to a community in the throes of the Fraser River Gold Rush. Rev. Pringle lead the parish from 1859 to 1864. With its dark wood interior and leaded glass windows, Christ Church is an excellent example of an Anglican parish church in the Gothic Revival style. Interpretive signage on the exterior allows visitors to explore the building’s history during the off-season. Guided tours are available during the summer months. The grounds offer a classical labyrinth, old-growth trees, and a peaceful garden.

ope and the surrounding area has a vibrant arts scene that ranges from enthusiastic amateurs to seasoned professionals. Community programming through the Hope and District Arts Council encourages residents and visitors to participate in many artistic endeavours. Professional writers, master carvers, painters, and potters all call Hope home. One of the newest additions to our artistic family is Sanford Williams, a master carver and graduate of Gitanmaax School of Art. Sanford has been carving for over 30 years and his accomplishments include carving for the Bill Reid Gallery. There’s always a seat at his table for visitors to watch the creative process. Hope Art Machine offers affordable classes for adults and beginners. If you’ve ever wanted to learn to paint or are missing the pottery wheel on your vacation, check them out at 777 5th Avenue. The Hope Arts Gallery is open year-round and showcases some of the best Hope has to offer. There are special monthly exhibits and a gift shop.

he first chainsaw carving appeared on Wallace Street in 1991. It was carved from a Douglas fir by Pete Ryan and we have been growing our collection ever since. Every two years, the International Chainsaw Carving Competition comes to Hope (last held in 2015) and our collection grows. Check out last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winner on Third Avenue in front of Town Hall. Also worth checking out is the Edgar Allan Poe inspired fan favourite carving inside the Hope Library.

The chainsaw carvings represent the best of our community. Each year, hundreds of volunteer hours are put into repairing and refurbishing the carvings. Named in honour of our fur trading history, Hope Brigade Days has signalled the end of summer for the community ever since. Today, Brigade Days is not just for locals: it’s a popular draw for visitors as well as a homecoming for former residents. It takes place the weekend after Labour Day in September. Brigade Days has gone through many changes over the years, but it remains a fun weekend for the whole family. Hundreds of kilometres of snowshoe, ATV, snowmobile, hiking and biking trails wind their way through the forests of the Sumallo and Nicolum River valleys. From its roots as a traditional First Nations hunting and berry picking area to its time as a home for wayward boys in the 1950s, Sunshine Valley has had a varied and fascinating history. One of the most fascinating pieces of Sunshine Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history is its time as a Japanese internment camp. In 1942, the Canadian government created a coastal exclusion zone and Japanese-Canadians living within that zone were interned in camps throughout B.C. and across the prairies. Between 1942 and 1946, approximately 2,600 people were interned at Sunshine Valley, then called Tashme. The name Tashme was derived from the last names of the MLAs responsible for the camp: Taylor,Â Shearer and Meighan. Many of the men worked at a sawmill in the camp or on construction crews that helped build the Hope-Princeton Highway (Highway 3 was completed in 1949).

2016 marks the 70th anniversary of the dismantling of Tashme. Today, the only building that exists from that era is the community centre. After the war, a significant number of internees stayed in the area and have built a vibrant Japanese-Canadian community.

Hope Slide

he Hope Slide was one of the largest recorded landslides in Canadian history. In the early hours of January 9, 1965 – a mere 16 years after it opened – Highway 3 was suddenly and unexpectedly blocked when a slab of rock fractured away from the face of Johnson Peak, resulting in the Hope Slide. The force of the slide was such that the debris travelled sixty metres up Mt. Coulter (on the opposite side of the valley) before settling again over the Hope-Princeton Highway. The resultant debris was 85 metres deep and three kilometres wide. The debris that slid from the mountain was enough to obliterate Beaver (Outram) Lake from the topography of the valley. Four people

were killed in the slide. The impact of the slide set off seismographic readings at a monitoring station in Penticton, which led to the belief that the slide was caused by an earthquake. However, geologists today note that the Hope Slide was caused by weak layers of rock simply giving way to gravity. Visitors travelling along Highway 3 are driving fifty-five metres above the original highway surface. At the Hope Slide viewpoint, visitors can see the scars that were left on Johnson Peak by the slide. Map on page 42.

anning Provincial Park – home to Manning Park Resort – is a fourseason playground. The western edge of the park is 20 minutes from downtown, while the resort is a 45 minute drive from Hope. SUMMER During the summer months, Manning Park is home to some of the best hiking, camping, and swimming in the area. efore Emory Creek gained notoriety as the most profitable section of the Fraser River during the 1858 Gold Rush, it was populated by families who made their living hunting, fishing, mining, and collecting other resources for trade. It has a long history as an integral place in the Fraser Canyon.

In 1858, more than 25,000 men travelled into the Fraser Canyon hoping to strike it rich. Five hundred of those men were believed to have camped at Emory Bar in order to profit from the riches at Hill’s Bar (the site of the 1858 strike that started the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush). The frontier town faded away as the mother lode was never found.

In the fall of 1878, Emory City came to life again as the western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). The city quickly grew to 13 streets, 32 blocks, and 400 homes and businesses. Emory City was even home to the Inland Sentinel, the first newspaper on the mainland. By 1881 the CPR moved its western terminus to Yale (five kilometres upstream) and Emory City faded again into the past. Now, all that remains of Emory City’s glory days is the Hope River General Store and two private campgrounds. Visitors can enjoy a wonderful meal at the General Store and peruse through information about the local First Nations and Chinese miners who worked in the area. Those looking to stretch their legs can walk part of the historic Cariboo Wagon Road.

he small town of Yale was once the largest city north of San Francisco and west of Chicago. Originally established in 1848 as a Hudson’s Bay trading post, Yale grew to an estimated 30,000 people during the 1858 gold rush. With the construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road in the 1860s, Yale became the terminus for one of the largest sternwheeler routes in North America and bustled with the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s.

Today, only a few of the original buildings remain in what was once a booming gold rush town. At Yale Historic Site you can visit the museum where artifacts and collections from Yale’s historic past are on display in the Creighton House, an original home built in the 1870s. Visit the Living History Tent City to relive life on the 1860s. There’s a general store, jail, saloon, Chinese boarding house, gold

commissioner’s tent, medical tent, and blacksmith shop. Built in 1863, St. John the Divine is one of the oldest surviving churches in B.C. It is home to ‘Enduring Threads,’ a collection of antique textiles hand-stitched by the students of All Hallows Girls School, and it also houses original altar pieces. Regular services are no longer held here but it is available for wedding rentals and special occasions. The historic Ward Tea House is open June to September. Hours are listed on the website at historicyale.ca. The Yale Artisan Market will be open Sundays from Victoria Day to Labour Day. You can also try your hand at gold panning, either on-site or on the banks of the Fraser River. For history buffs, walking tours of the old town sites and Pioneer Cemetery can be booked through the Yale Historic Site or self-guided by purchasing a guide book.

trip through the Fraser Canyon would not be complete without a stop at Hell’s Gate.

In 1808, explorer Simon Fraser described this section of the river as a place “where no human being should ever venture, for surely we have encountered the gates of hell” after he and his men inched their way along its cliffs using rope ladders made by their aboriginal guides. Known mostly for its breathtaking gondola rides, Hell’s Gate provides a fascinating opportunity to learn about the ecosystem and history of the Fraser River. Hell’s Gate is evidence of man’s best and worst feats of engineering.

Blasting during the construction of the Canadian National Railway in 1913 resulted in a landslide that wiped out millions of salmon. In 1937, joint cooperation between and Canada and the U.S. led to the creation of the International Fishways. Each year, millions of salmon battle insurmountable odds on their upriver journey to spawn and die at their various spawning grounds. One of those overwhelming odds is Hell’s Gate. The Fraser River’s entire flow of water from its 135,185 square

Simon’s Café offers homemade salmon chowder, while the Fudge Factory serves up 30 different flavours made on site (famous for its fudge-dipped waffle cones). Gifts, souvenirs, and a great selection of B.C. history books can be found in the Gold Panner Gift Shop.

At Hell’s Gate, Highway 1 passes 244 metres (800 feet) above the Fraser River and it’s here where your family’s adventure begins as you board the airtram. The lower terminal features an educational exhibit showcasing Simon Fraser, the Fraser River Gold Rush, and the life cycle of the spawning salmon. There is also gold panning, observations decks and a suspension bridge.

Adding to all of these adrenaline-teasing experiences is the belief that the property is haunted. Information about these friendly spirits can be viewed throughout the site. Hell’s Gate Airtram is a 35 minute drive northeast of Hope. Parking is free and pets are permitted. The attraction is open daily April 26 to October 11, 2016

Fraser Canyon he Fraser Canyon Highway is a scenic route rich in human history. First Nations traversed the canyon walls using ropes, ladders and bridges. They built a trail network that connected their villages, enabling trade, hunting, and resource gathering. The Tikwalus Trail (north of Spuzzum) is a First Nations trail that you can hike today, providing spectacular views of the canyon. In 1808, Simon Fraser was the first European to travel the Canyon and remarked that he had to travel “where no human being should ever

venture, for surely we have encountered the gates of hell.” Today, visitors can see the sheer granite and boiling water that terrified Fraser and his men at Hell’s Gate Airtram. Transportation in the canyon accelerated with the discovery of Fraser River gold in 1858. Mule trails were built up the canyon in 1860 and you can find a section of mule trail near the southern entrance to Hell’s Gate Tunnel. New gold strikes at Barkerville in 1861 forced the colonial government to upgrade the mule trail to a wagon road.

Completed in 1863, the Cariboo Wagon Road was built by hand and linked the 600 kilometre distance between the gold rush boom towns of Fort Yale and Barkerville. At a pullout south of the Yale Tunnel, a section of the Cariboo Wagon Road is still visible. Visitors can also see the power of the Fraser River and get a sense of the danger of the journey up the canyon as they watch the river crash through a narrow point near Lady Franklin Rock. The crowning touch of the wagon road was the Alexandra Bridge, which

you can still walk over when you visit Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park(40 kilometres north of Hope on Highway 1). Two national railways were ultimately built in 1885 and 1915. The first automobile road came in 1926, but the modern highway wasn’t completed until the early 1960s. As you travel the canyon today, you will pass through seven tunnels, ranging in length from about 57 metres to 610 metres. Engineers were forced to blast through rock faces in order to complete this section of Highway 1.

N’laka’pamux First Nations had been pulling gold out of the river for nearly a decade prior to the European ‘discovery’ of gold. At the time, access to gold (along with furs and salmon), superior knowledge of the land, and a higher population led to the N’laka’pamux holding significant political power in the Fraser Canyon.

Localized disputes regarding disruption of the salmon run and violence perpetuated by miners against First Nations nearly led to all-out war on the banks of the Fraser River in 1858.

The Canyon War was characterized by violent skirmishes between Nlaka’pamux and the Miner’s Militia. In late summer, Nlaka’pamux Chief David Spintlum negotiated peace between the parties and stopped the war from escalating further. As a result of the Canyon War, British authorities acted quickly in establishing a company of soldiers in the region and lobbying London for full colony status.

ust an hour’s drive north of Hope along Highway 1, visitors will discover two cross-river communities steeped in history. Take a break from your travels at Francis Harrington Park in downtown Boston Bar. The park is home to the community’s restored aerial ferry, which was once the only connection over the Fraser River between the two communities. The ferry last operated in 1986 when it was replaced by the Cog Harrington Bridge. Thanks to the work of dedicated volunteers, visitors can trace the history of the ferry and the history of the two communities it served through a series of storyboards that border the park.

ahatlatch Valley features mountain and canyon scenery, waterfalls, pristine lakes, and forests of pine, spruce, fir and cedar. Hiking and mountain biking opportunities are available along the river, lakes and many of the former logging roads that ascend to alpine meadows. Fishing is another popular activity on the Nahatlatch River and lakes. However, the main attraction of the Nahatlatch Valley is its worldclass whitewater. Rafters and kayakers come from all over the globe to paddle its near-continuous Class III-V rapids, which are among the most exciting and challenging in Western Canada. amazing rapids. Camping is available along the upper Nahatlatch River in Nahatlatch Provincial Park, although no services are provided other than pit toilets at designated sites. To reach the Nahatlatch Valley, turn off Highway 1 in Boston Bar and head west across the Cog Harrington Bridge over the Fraser River into North Bend. Continue north on that road winding along the Fraser River until it crosses the Nahatlatch River just before the railway point of Keefers. At the 25 kilometre mark, you will see Francis Lake, the first of three jade-green jewels. At the 26 kilometre point, you will arrive at Hannah Lake and at 29 kilometres you will reach Nahatlatch Lake, the largest of the three lakes in the pristine valley.

oquihalla Summit Recreation Area is one of Hope’s best kept secrets. It is a haven for ski-touring and sledding in the winter and hiking in the summer.

From an easy hike to Falls Lake to an advanced rock-climb up Yak Peak, Coquihalla Summit has something for all outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the most popular year-round peaks in the area is Needle Peak. The trailhead is on the south side of the highway at Exit 217 (Zopkios). The trail passes over glacier-polished granite and offers glorious views of the North Cascades and Coast Mountains.

Hope’s closest neighbours to the west – Harrison Hot Springs, Agassiz, and Harrison Mills – offer plenty of opportunities and adventure for visitors. The village of Harrison Hot Springs is built on the banks of beautiful Harrison Lake. Water-sports and festivals attract thousands of visitors every year and are definitely worth the visit. The natural springs – named Potash and Sulphur – which feed the resort’s private pool and the village’s public pool are inaccessible to visitors. A fenced-in source pool can be viewed at the end of a short

walk along the lakefront. Visitors wanting to soak in the natural pools require four-wheel drive and sturdy hiking boots. Agassiz and Harrison Mills are charming farm communities that boast a Circle Farm Tour, Kilby Historic Site, and the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival in late November. The Fraser Valley is home to North America’s largest gathering of bald eagles and fall is the best time to view them in their natural habitat. From Mission to Harrison Hot Springs, many venues offer eagle watching opportunities.
