Moore Rd. landowner ordered to protect fish habitat along the Cherry Creek ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A Moore Road landowner who has cleared trees from his agricultural property next to the Cherry Creek must take “immediate action” to protect sensitive fish habitat, says Fisheries Canada (DFO). The DFO last week issued a letter, under the Fisheries Act, to the property owner who is clearing land along Moore Road in the Cherry Creek area. The letter, according to Carrie Mishima, DFO communications advisor, is directing the landowner to take immediate action to protect fish and fish habitat in Cherry Creek and its tributary.

“The landowner is directed to cease discharge of sediments into Cherry Creek and to stabilize exposed soils along Cherry Creek and the tributary,” Mishima said. The sediments that Mishima is referring to are “silt, sand and other materials that come from exposed soils on the bank of a creek or river, and is potentially harmful to fish and fish habitat.” Mishima said that heavy rain can wash these materials into a creek and that the DFO is continuing to assess the situation to determine what further action may be required.

ith the seasons changing to warmer weather months, Port Alberni horseback riders say there will be more horses and riders trotting along roadways around the Alberni Valley. Cheryl Oickle and Terry Reynolds are members of the Port Alberni Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of B.C. who want to spread awareness about road safety and education for motorists when passing a horse on the roadside. Educating motorists on sharing the road with horses is important knowledge that drivers need to know to ensure safety for all, they said. “There’s lots of

horseback riders in Port Alberni. Our group has 22 or 23 senior members but there’s private people all over Alberni that have horses,” Oickle said. “We’re seeing more and more on the road all the time.”

I have landed in a ditch and it’s not a nice place to be. – Cheryl Oickle The message the group wants motorists to know is to “pass slow and wide” around horses. “I have landed in a ditch and it’s not a nice place to be,” Oickle said. Cont’d on A3

Second refugee group prepares for family KRISTI DOBSON

he congregation of the Notre Dame Catholic Church is anxiously awaiting the arrival of its sponsored refugee family. This is a second group working to bring a refugee family to the Alberni Valley From Syria. Months of preparation and fundraising have led up to the pending arrival. The date is still unknown to organizers but they intend to welcome them with a warm homecoming within the next couple of months. Of the two options provided by the government regulating sponsorship agreements, the church chose the Private Referral Sponsorship. It allows the group to choose a specific family,

presently in Lebanon, who are originally from Iraq or Syria, and have been displaced by the activities of ISIS,” said Mike O’Gorman, an active member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul for 13 years.

One such refugee has close ties with members of the local Catholic church and is in contact with those currently looking to flee from the war-torn countries. Father Karam, a government sponsored refugee, arrived in Canada in 2014. From Ontario he made his way to Victoria and, finally, to Oceanside where he was posted at Parksville’s Church of Ascension. He left Iraq to a small village further north after his parish was gunned down and many of the parishioners murdered. When he was forced to leave, he claimed refugee status in Lebanon, but is still in contact with those currently living under stressful conditions. “We selected this family of four from a list that Father Karam

We pretty much have enough stuff in storage, but could use some more furniture.” Currently at about $31,125 of a targeted $46,000 raised to support the family once they arrive, organizers are relying on an upcoming dinner to reach that goal. Set for Sunday, April, 3, a chicken and spaghetti feast, complete with a 50/50 draw and silent auction is the next opportunity for the community to help out. It will be held at the Notre Dame Parish Hall where tickets are available ahead of time.

The investigation began several weeks ago after the DFO received a report of “possible noncompliance” with the Fisheries Act related to “works in the Cherry Creek area,” Mishima said. Alex Dyer, AlberniClayoquot Regional District planner, said he hasn’t heard any updates on development or

Reynolds was determined to get road signs in the Valley after a member of the BCHBC was injured last summer when her horse fell over, squishing her leg, because of a motorist driving by too close and too quickly, frightening the horse. Fisheries Canada has directed a Moore Road landowner to cease discharge of sediments into the Cherry Creek.

“We’re just trying to get our message out there about being respectful; they’re big animals, pass wide and slow on any of our roads,” said Oickle, who rides her 14-year-old horse, Jewel, almost every day. Common areas in the Valley where riders will take their horses are the Beaver Creek area, particularly around McLean Mill, the Cherry Creek area and the Sproat Lake area. “We have some of the same rights that drivers do,” Oickle said. “But our responsibility with the horses is to make sure we’re well seen and that we have as good of control as we can of that horse. We never have 100 per cent control because they’re a prey animal and they could explode in a heart beat.” A person riding an animal or driving an animal on a highway has the rights and is subject to the duties of the driver of a vehicle, according to the Motor Vehicle Act of B.C. South Port residents gained a neighbourhood drugstore this week with the official opening of the Medicine Shoppe’s new location inside Quality Foods. “It’s been something we’ve looked forward to for the south end of Port Alberni. We feel like this side of town hasn’t had a lot of pharmacy services since Zellers went down a few years ago,” said Port Alberni Medicine Shoppe owner and pharmacist Larry Johannessen. “It’s giving someone an ‘at-home’ option. A lot of people live here, they walk here and it’s a long walk down the [10th Avenue] dip.” The two companies also make a great fit,

according to Medicine Shoppe Canada president Terry Stychin. “The kind of care we give to our patients lines up exactly in parallel with the Quality Foods model and the high level of customer service they give to their customers,” Stychin said. Quality Foods president and co-founder Ken Schley agrees. “In Port Alberni, we were looking for better ways to serve the customer. This gives us the opportunity to add another service,” said Schley. The new pharmacy is located just inside the store’s main doors to the left, where the flower shop used to be located. The flower

– Larry Johannessen by-case basis. Johannessen opened the first Medicine Shoppe in Port Alberni on Southgate Road in 2007 and the second one in 2012 at the then-new Maple Way Urgent Care Clinic. He sees continued investment in Port Alberni as a no-brainer. “I talked to someone

who just came from Victoria saying that people are scrambling to get here so as far as I’m concerned Port Alberni is a wonderful place to invest in. The future is here.” The new location will have a different, more modern feel than the other two, Stychin said. “This is our second new store design in B.C.,” he said. The old design is 23 years old and it was time for an update. “It’s a more contemporary look and feel. This has got the new modern fireplace, the brick and the very contemporary feel behind the counter. It’s a more clinical, customer-centred look and feel.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/alberninews

«TEN YEARS AGO DRIVERS NEED TO SHARE ROAD WITH EVERYONE

SUSAN QUINN Editor

We’re celebrating a decade of bringing community news to the Valley.

W

e North Americans need to get over ourselves every time we get behind the wheel of a car. The road is not solely ours: we have to share it with others, like horseback riders. We’ve heard stories of riders falling into ditches after drivers startled their horses, and others who have suffered grievous injuries because of similar problems. Riders have to follow Motor Vehicles Act rules, so cars should treat them as vehicles. The courtesy shouldn’t just extend to horses. Port Alberni will be getting bicycle lanes in some parts of town in an effort to integrate two-wheeled with four-wheeled traffic. The city engineer proposed a plan to introduce bike We need to lanes so both types learn to share of transportation can learn to live with the road. each other, and it’s a good approach. The Ministry of Transportation has heard the horseback riders by erecting signs in rural areas warning motorists that horses and riders use those rural roads. Now, it’s up to drivers to take up the campaign, giving horseback riders a wide berth and slowing down while passing them. There are other countries in the world, like India and China, where it seems there are no rules of the road, yet everyone seems to be able to get from point A to point B without serious bodily harm. We should be able to do that here in North America too. We need to learn to share the road, and realize that just because a metal vehicle is bigger than a bicycle or harder than a horse doesn’t mean we win. There is no prize for running a horse and rider off the road, or squeezing out a cyclist. — ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

ANASTASIA FINLAY I went to Parksville Urgent Care Unit and they told me I’d have to wait. As I was talking to others...two of the ladies were from Port Alberni because they wouldn’t take them...it’s pretty harsh to be turned away from the ER.

Anybody can say we need more: more staff, more something. They’re understaffed and there isn’t enough room, so yeah, it’s probably critical.

It is a big issue; we’ve built our hospital too small. I go there every day and I see it; it’s terrible.

Fire hydrants within the city got a little bit more dependable last week as city crews replaced old models with newer ones. Crews were replacing the fire hydrants along Sixth Avenue between Wallace Street and Roger Street as part of the water main replacement project. “The current hydrants are the slidegate style and we’re replacing it with the compression style so when they do get knocked over they don’t shoot up water,” said City of Port Alberni waterworks charge hand Amar Giri.

According to Giri, when the old style hydrants were hit by a car, they shot water into the air and caused localized flooding. When it happened at night, that meant the city crews worked overtime to fix the damage. Hydrant replacement has been an ongoing project for the city since the early 2000s. Each fire hydrant costs about $2,300 to replace, Giri said. “Within the last 15 years, everything that we’re replacing has been changed to compression style hydrants,” he said.

He renamed the new town Ladysmith in honour of his beloved. The stories behind the names of a majority of Island communities seem to fit one of two categories. The first is those communities bearing a name given that location by its First Nations people, names that typically signify what was attractive about the area, names like Esquimalt, Nanaimo and Comox. Historian Patrick Dunae said he never before realized the pattern of the place names reflecting positive characteristics of those places, but said it fit with what respected Snuneymuxw Elder Ellen White told him about First Nations naming conventions

for people. Commnunities with European names were given them by explorers in honour of British or Spanish officials, names like Port Hardy, Alberni and Tofino. Dunae said explorers followed a protocol of first naming things after a sovereign, then highranking officials in the fleet or company. The mix of Spanish and British names comes from the early competition for the territory between the two nations. A negotiation between Britain’s George Vancouver and Spain’s Juan Francisco Quadra led to peaceful co-existence and an island originally named “Quadra’s and Vancouver’s Island.” The current absence of Quadra tells you which colonial power stuck around. john.mckinley@blackpress.ca

We worked really hard for it and were surprised how it went.” The new transition this year to middle schools resulted in a lack of a full Grade 8 boys team, but Parmar said a

growing interest at the elementary level should solve that. “We had a hard time finding a coach to facilitate a team, but we have it covered for next year,” he said. “Some tried out and made the junior level but in a perfect world it would have been nice to have full Grade 8 girls and boys’ teams.” That growing interest was evident at the Elementary Basketball Jamboree in February. Twentytwo teams, including 11 Grade 4/5’s and 11 Grade 6/7’s, took part

he Alberni Armada held a wrap-up of the high school basketball season for players and coaches on March 1. It was a chance for athletes to participate in recreational co-ed and multi-age games to get to know each other and feel a part of a larger family. It was also a time to recognize the hard work teammates and coaches displayed all season. When Neelam Parmar started coaching basketball at the high school five years ago, each of the junior and senior boys and girls’ teams held their own season finales. It was then that he decided to combine them all into one large event with a dinner and awards ceremony. “Out of the four teams, we created six mini-teams and it was a fun way to finish off the season,” Parmar said. The highlight this year was the junior girls. The young team finished in third place at the Vancouver Island championships. “It was a successful year for the junior girls,” Parmar said. “As they transition over the next couple of years to the senior team, they will be one the community will want to watch. They will be a contender for the Islands.” At the senior level, the boys attended the North Islands and the girls made it to compete at the Islands. Players of all levels went home from the wrap-up with a variety of awards. Nick Donahue was

They loved walking the dyke with the dogs. Quadding was a love of theirs, especially on the Beaufort Range. They also moose hunted up North for years, where they met a great group of friends. Mom also loved garage sales and the farmer’s market every Saturday for years. We’ll miss Mom’s antipasto. Our heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Nanaimo hospital that cared for our mother. Much love to family and friends for the support they’ve given us.

community through silent auction donations as well as working around employees’ volunteering time. McNabb opened Nexcar four years ago, and says he is still building his business. “Groups come in to see us on a regular basis for silent auction donations,” says McNabb. He comes prepared, with detailing packages for them to auction off. Some of the groups he has supported recently include the Rotary clubs, minor hockey and the Alberni Charity Golf

Van Isle Ford has held seven such drives in the past five years: $20 per eligible test drive (to a maximum of $6,000) is donated to a charity. Ford will hold another such drive on Saturday, May 7 in conjunction with National We Day and are looking to partner with a community charity, he

Promoting the ‘buy local’ philosophy when you’re asking people to purchase new or used vehicles is a ‘give-give’ relationship, says one Port Alberni car dealer. “It’s our responsibility not just as auto dealerships, but businesses in general to support the community that supports us,” says Will Pulford, dealer principal at Van Isle Ford and owner of Pacific Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd., both in Port Alberni. Pulford is only one example of an auto dealer who is giving back to his community. Pulford moved to the Alberni Valley and opened Van Isle Ford in May 2010, then purchased the Chevrolet dealership and renamed it in November 2012. He has been contributing to the community since he moved here—bringing his philanthropic ideals with him from Kelowna, where as part of the Kelowna Auto Dealers Association he was able to help many charities. Three and a half years ago Pulford decided he wanted to try and make a large impact with charities in the Alberni Valley. He was already sponsoring minor hockey teams and other charities with different small contributions, but felt he could do more. He decided every time someone bought a new or used car from his lots, he would donate $50 to one of three charities: Ty Watson House hospice, the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad or the Alberni Valley Charity Golf Classic (which in turn helps the BC Children’s Hospital as well as four or five other local charities). “In three and a half years we’ve donated just over $95,000 to those

Love for all things automotive Tar Binng has spent most of his adult life helping people buy cars KARLY BLATS

Port Alberni’s Tar Binng, has been is the automotive business for most of his life and says what he enjoys most about the job is working with the public. “Any business is a people business so when you’re good with public then anything is possible,” Binng said. Binng moved to Port Alberni from India when he was 15 years old and said his love for automotive work developed in a high school mechanics class. Binng dropped out of school in Grade 11 to take on a position as a mechanics apprentice with Chisholm Towing, where he worked for many years. Eventually Binng began working at a Shell gas station on 10th Avenue and Redford Street prior to buying his first

he said. In 1980 Binng opened a Texaco gas station on 10th Avenue. After running the

about six or seven used cars in the 90’s, today the lot is full with more than 60 vehicles ready to be sold. “Business is always up and down, in the end it all works out,” Binng said. “Port Alberni is a good town, to me it’s been good.” Binng begins his day around 5 a.m., exercises and heads to work for 9 a.m. where he runs the shop with his son Tarmeet.

Motorists never know when problems with their vehicles may force them to pull off the road and onto the shoulder. Whether it’s a flat tire, a sputtering engine or an empty gas tank, such circumstances are never welcome. But such situations need not be so unbearable. Drivers who keep roadside emergency kits in their vehicles may find themselves getting back on the road more quickly the next time an unforeseen problem forces them to pull off the highway. The following are some must-have items drivers should include in their roadside emergency kits. • Roadside flares • First-aid kit • Jumper cables • Warm blankets • Flashlight • Extra batteries • Screwdrivers (both flat-head and Phillips) • Tire-pressure gauge • Spare tire • De-icing agent • Nonperishable snacks • Extra fluids (i.e., motor oil, brake fluid, antifreeze, windshield washer) • Pliers • Cell phone charger • Important phone numbers (i.e., mechanic, auto insurance company)

When tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven tread wear. Misaligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to the left or right. Drivers who notice their steering wheel is off-centre or vibrating when they are driving may need to adjust their tires’ alignment. Camber, or the inward or outward angle of the tire when viewed from the front of the vehicle, will be adjusted. When tires are balanced correctly and aligned, vehicles will offer a smooth ride with little to no vibrations. Having tires serviced can maximize their performance and lifespan.

hubs to create a more uniform balance of weight. Lead weights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced will not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven wear. Alignment Tire alignment is another way to reduce wear on tires and help avoid steering and “pulling” problems. Bridgestone Tires defines tire alignment as an adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels.

weight of the combined tire and wheel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the wheel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise weight distribution is nearly impossible without a little help. The slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires wobble, causing noticeable vibrations. Mechanics will test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine will spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting weights will be placed on the tire

Tire balance is checked on a machine that will measure heavy spots. Technicians will apply weights to the tires to balance any consistencies in weight.

That is Port Alberni’s annual drag racing weekend. “We re-arrange his schedule for the time needed for the event,” says McNabb. “He’s also a referee for hockey. For example, he had a week off for the midget hockey provincials in town.” Shawn Elder, general manager with the Alberni Auto Group, says the staff at Alberni Chrysler, Alberni Toyota and Cap-It prefer to fly under the radar when it comes to donating to the community. “We do a whole bunch of stuff but we don’t advertise it,” he said. “A lot of the stuff we’ve done is for people in the community who have needed a helping hand. We’ve had people whose kids are really sick, and we’ll do a fundraiser at the dealerships.” They also open their space to minor hockey and other sports teams or non-profit organizations who want to host hotdog sales, car washes or even bottle drives. “We could literally have a department at the dealership for donations,” because they receive so many calls for help, he said. Everyone’s request is considered individually, and they can’t help everyone. But they try. “My first priority is sick kids or someone who is sick in the community,” Elder said. “I’ve never been in that position. I have three boys and I’m fortunate nothing has happened to them. “When I hear something has happened (to someone else’s child), it breaks my heart.”

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted when everything is working correctly. Wheels and suspension systems bear the weight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some wear and tear is to be expected. Many drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for worn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride. Balance Balancing tires involves equalizing the
