Abbotsford News

Nearly two years after the Abbotsford Heat played their last game in the Fraser Valley, the arena the American Hockey League team once called home is consuming fewer tax dollars than ever, council heard Monday. The Abbotsford Centre recorded an operating deficit of $1.24 million in 2015, and is on pace for a better year in 2016, council was told. The 2015 figure is nearly $500,000 better than 2014 and about half of the subsidy the facility received between 2010 and 2013, when the city was also paying millions of dollars to guarantee the now-departed Heat broke even. If a new major tenant is found, city manager George Murray told council that he is confident the arena’s deficit will drop to below $1 million. But finding a hockey team for the facility is proving elusive. Although rumours suggested the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants may be considering moving, possibly to the Langley Events Centre, the team’s owner has ruled out playing further east in Abbotsford. And while a Giants’ move to Langley could affect that city’s British Columbia Hockey League team, the Rivermen, there has been no indication that club would consider the Abbotsford Centre as a possible home. And while it was announced earlier this month that two American Hockey League teams will relocate for next year, neither is coming to B.C. Mayor Henry Braun told The News that he was less hopeful a tenant would be found than he was three months ago. He confirmed the city had spoken to the Giants, but those discussions hadn’t Continued on A3

City continues to pay down debt progressed. Talks with other potential tenants – both hockey teams and some from other sports – have taken place, he said, but other obstacles remain, often beyond Abbotsford’s control. “We’re letting it be known to everyone and anyone that we have an arena that is looking for an anchor tenant,” Braun said. “We can’t make something happen if there’s other stuff going on in the league.” And the next year could prove critical. “If [finding an anchor tenant] doesn’t happen in another year, it might not happen in the next five years, in terms of hockey,” Braun said. A lack of a tenant also makes it impossible to sell the naming rights to the

Abbotsford Centre, cutting off another source of revenue. Despite that, the facility, located on King Road, has improved its books since the launch of the arena’s “A New Game” strategy, by focusing on hosting profitable shows and hosting more community events. “We really focus on ensuring we try to bring the best quality of events to the venue while we keep an eye on the bottom line,” the facility’s general manager, Andrew Nash, told council Monday. Last year, the facility hosted 33 such events, with paying attendance of 70,042. That number is down considerably from the 90,129 who paid to take in a show in 2014. Nash attributed the drop primarily to touring schedules by major acts, and predicted that the venue would be busier in 2016. A

two-year touring rotation often sees artists play large arenas in major markets one year, then return the next to perform in secondary venues, Nash said. Nash also stressed higher community usage of the facility, with ice time by local groups up more than 20 per cent. Braun was pleased with the decrease in the arena’s deficit. And while he has expressed skepticism the facility can ever break even, he said “we are going to get to that $1 million subsidy, one way or another.” The city continues to pay down the cost of building the Abbotsford Centre. According to the annual centre report, last year $2.34 million was paid towards the debt and interest incurred in the construction of the facility, which opened in 2009.

Impaired charges in head-on crash Impaired-driving charges have been laid against a man in relation to a head-on crash last September that seriously injured 21-yearold Jocelyn Visser of Abbotsford. Balraj Cheema, 53, has been charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and impaired driving causing bodily harm. The collision took place at about 11:20 p.m. on Sept. 13 on Old Yale Road near St. Moritz Way. When emergency crews arrived on scene, they located Visser trapped in a Dodge sedan and another driver in an overturned Dodge pickup truck. The driver of the truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by ground ambulance. A GoFundMe page was soon started to help Visser, who was on her way home from her job at the Save-On-Foods on Whatcom Road at the time of the crash. Fleeing car thief hits two vehicles Culprit causes chaos at Mt. Lehman and Fraser Highway Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A car thief on the run hit two vehicles and caused traffic chaos on Thursday night in Abbotsford. Sgt. Judy Bird said the incident began after 8 p.m., when Abbotsford Police officers patrolling the Townline Hill area – where extra enforcement is in place due to recent gang-related violence and a recent fatal shooting – were running licence plates of parked cars. A Ford F-150 in the parking lot of the Apollo Athletic Club on Townline Road came back as being stolen from Surrey. An officer observing the vehicle saw a male driver and female passenger drive

away, and began following the truck from a distance. The vehicle soon made its way to the area of Fraser Highway and Mt. Lehman roads, and the driver indicated he was going to make a left turn onto Mt. Lehman. Instead, he made a sudden lane change to the right, causing several cars to brake and hitting a vehicle in his path before swinging back to the left and proceeding through a red light. The driver then hit a second vehicle as he was proceeding south on Mt. Lehman Road. Bird said officers who were following the pickup stayed behind to assist the

drivers who had been hit, while others were dispatched to the scene. Those officers followed the trail of vehicle fluid to find the stolen vehicle abandoned in a driveway in the 2000 block of Martens Street. The female passenger was located nearby. Searches of the area, including use of the Air One police helicopter and a K9 unit, failed to turn up the driver. Bird said that man, who is in his 30s, is still wanted by police. Charges pending against him include possession of stolen property and dangerous driving. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or text abbypd (222973).

Alternatives to urban drug ghettos Tom

Fletcher

B.C. Views My recent columns on B.C.’s struggle with the growing westward migration of transients have produced responses that fall mainly into two groups. The largest is people relieved that somebody is questioning the urban media narrative. That’s the one where drifters, drug addicts, welfare shoppers and thieves are the victims, and working people whose hardearned communities are being degraded are the problem because of their selfish, uncaring attitudes. Then there are readers so marinated in our nanny-state education, media and political system they object to anything other than a big-government response. They tend to ask, what’s your solution, Tom? As someone who has lost one relative to heroin addiction and almost lost another, I reflect on the history of successful addiction

treatment. That is one of detox and abstinence. That’s why I oppose the failed model of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where resources are poured into concentrated housing and “harm reduction” that perpetuate addiction, handouts and helplessness. Housing Minister Rich Coleman is rolling this out in other communities, in what I fear is an effort to paper over the problem for an election year. The Globe and Mail recently profiled a methamphetamine addict enrolled at Onsite, the belated treatment addition to Vancouver’s Insite supervised injection site. It was his fifth try, which may have something to do with the fact that when he walks outside he is in the middle of Canada’s biggest street drug bazaar. Contrast that with a facility called Baldy Hughes, a therapeutic community 30 km outside Prince George. It’s a working farm, designed to provide a year-long program of abstinence-based therapy and meaningful work. It uses the traditional 12-step program developed by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, with peer support and group therapy.

There’s a greenhouse for winter farming, livestock to tend and the residents have designed and built a new horse stable. There’s also a beekeeping project. Residents can complete their high school education, take first aid training and learn basic computer skills. What they can’t do is leave unescorted

They tend to ask, what’s your solution, Tom? during their treatment program. They can’t bring drugs, alcohol, weapons or phones with them. It’s a costly program, with a small number of spaces available on referral from B.C.’s social development ministry. Others can finance it with the help of medical employment insurance. I mention this not to suggest it is a solution for every community, but to compare it with what the B.C. government is spending millions on.

A news event was arranged to greet the first resident moving from Victoria’s squalid downtown tent camp to a refurbished nursing home. And who was the poster child for this project, hand-picked by the agency that runs the growing network of shelters in the area? He described himself as a former Edmonton resident who was hitch-hiking around, going from shelter to shelter and ending up camped in the squat. He was impressed by the tidy room with three meals a day he was being given, in a “low barrier” facility where booze and drugs are brought in, no questions asked. What he was really looking forward to, in addition to accommodations, was an opportunity to kick back and play his favourite video game. That would be Grand Theft Auto, where your character runs around stealing cars, escaping police and meeting with criminal gangs. It’s popular with adolescents, which these days means anyone under 30. This is where your tax dollars are going. Waves of people come in, with key trouble spots being communities on the major highways coming into the Lower Mainland. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

letters Misinformation on bus passes for disabled Unfortunately, there is a great deal of misunderstanding in the community about our government’s recent announcement of $170 million in new funding to increase assistance rates for persons with disabilities and to assist them with their transportation needs. It has been described as being everything from a clawback to an example of government giving with one hand and taking from the other. Nothing could be further from the truth. Let me explain. To begin with, this new funding arose from a concern of our

government that not all persons with disabilities in the province are being treated fairly. Specifically and for example, under the current system 35,000 people receive an extra $52 a month benefit in the form of a subsidized bus pass, while some 45,000 persons with disabilities receive nothing to assist them in their transportation needs. To correct this unfairness and respect more personal choice, we are providing an increase of up to $77 per month beginning Sept. 1, 2016 to ensure everyone gets the same amount of supports.

Some people may wish to spend some of that money on a subsidized bus pass, as they have done in the past, at a cost of $52 per month and the annual administration fee of $45, which continues to apply. This would still leave them with more money than they would have under the current system. Some people have argued that we should let people keep the subsidized bus pass, plus give them the additional $77 a month. Doing that, however, would take us back to being unfair to all of those people who choose or need to

travel in other ways. As significant as this new money is, we will always try our best to assist further with the transportation needs of persons with disabilities. We want to do more, and as much as we

can push the limits of affordability, we will. That being said, in the future, we need to do better so that good news doesn’t become misunderstood news. Darryl Plecas, MLA Abbotsford South

Why Can’t We Talk About Vaginal Health? Erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer and “dribbling” men – we are very comfortable talking about men’s health, but when it comes to women’s health issues we suddenly blush and become shy and reticent.

Abby Medical Laser Centre is proud to introduce FemiLift . A non-invasive procedure for vaginal tightening and urinary incontinence reduction. To discuss your options, please call for a free consultation.

The fact is that many women experience vaginal laxity as they age and more than 90% of women who have had a vaginal delivery will have some level of vaginal trauma contributing to pain and/or decreased sexual enjoyment. At the other end of the spectrum many women entering their menopausal years will experience vaginal dryness and discomfort leading to sexual dysfunction. The reality is that there are numerous non surgical options for women to enhance their vaginal health and prevent or treat many of these symptoms. However many women remain unaware of their options because this topic is just not discussed. Pelvic floor physiotherapy has a lot to offer women wishing to avoid surgical options. Topical hormone therapy for vaginal dryness is grossly underused. The newest treatment is vaginal laser rejuvenation. This is a minimally invasive treatment that employs a laser to administer burst of energy to the vaginal tissue that results in your own body regenerating collagen tissue to improve vaginal health. Clinical studies have confirmed its efficacy at vaginal tightening for mild to moderate laxity, mild stress incontinence and vaginal atrophy in menopause and

There are numerous newer alternative for women who wish to explore options for vaginal health enhancement. Detractors will argue that these techniques have no place in clinical practice. These same critics will ignore the blatant reality that patients chose to enhance many aspects of their anatomy like their breasts, noses and faces – and just because these have been done for years and there is a sense of “comfort” with

Une occasion de protéger vos terres

Do you own a cottage, farm, woodlot, ranch or other property with ecologically sensitive features— such as forests, prairie, wetlands or shorelines—that remain in their natural state? Would you like to see your land protected from development for future generations?

The Government of Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program enables landowners to donate land or a partial interest or right in land (such as a conservation easement, covenant or servitude) to qualified recipients such as land trusts and other nature conservation organizations that will care for it forever. In addition to peace of mind, donors receive significant income tax benefits. For more information, visit the Ecological Gifts Program website at www.ec.gc.ca/pde-egp/ or call 1-800-668-6767.

Twenty-three social service and community organizations in Abbotsford are together receiving nearly $850,000 from the community gaming grant program. Researcher probing bobcat habitat Climate change encouraging species to move north Kier Junos Abbotsford News

Earlier springs and reduced snow packs might be encouraging bobcats to move into more areas of B.C., according to a University of British Columbia Okanagan researcher who is trying to map the current provincial distribution of bobcats and lynx. “Bobcats have moved northwards and into higher elevations,” said TJ Gooliaff. B.C. conservation officer Don Stahl said sightings happen “fairly regularly” in Abbotsford.

Most sightings in the city tend to be in the Whatcom Road area and other parts of east Abbotsford. “What attracts them into residential areas is they’re generally after grey squirrels,” said Stahl. “We’ve always had a very healthy bobcat population up here.” Lynx, on the other hand, aren’t in the area at all. Stahl said they’re more likely to be in Hope, if there are any in the region. Gooliaff is asking the public for photos of bobcats and lynx accompanied with latitude and longitude or

UTM coordinates – or the nearest town or landmark including the distance and direction from them – and the dates of when the photos were taken.

Gooliaff said bobcats and lynx have been historically separated by snow depth. Lynx have long legs and large paws which make them suited for deep

snow, while bobcats are heavier, have smaller feet and will typically sink in the snow. Photos can be emailed to tj.gooliaff@ ubc.ca

Most bobcat sightings in Abbotsford tend to be in the File photo eastern portion of the city.

playoffs. Kawaguchi, the captain of the team, has recorded 11 points in six playoff games, and was named to the BCHL’s second team all-star for his strong play during the regular season. The Providence University commit had 83 points in 56 games during the season. Olischefski had a solid rookie year in the league, producing 48 points in 57 games.

He’s scored two points in six playoff games. The Denver University commit is NHL draft eligible this year, and was ranked as the 131st prospect by NHL central scouting earlier this year. He played for the Yale Hockey Academy before making the jump to the BCHL. Also in the hunt for a BCHL title is Abbotsford’s Ben Brar and the Penticton Vees. The Vees have a 2-0 se-

ries lead on the West Kelowna Warriors in round two of the playoffs, after eliminating the Vernon Vipers in five games in round one. Brar is committed to Denver University for 2017-18. The BCHL title, known as the Fred Page Cup is set to be awarded in April.

UBC continued the playoff run with a 6-4 win over Victoria on March 12, and an 8-3 win over Vancouver on March 12 advanced the Thunderbirds to the final. The Abbotsford Attack bounced back from the earlier loss to UBC to finish third at the event. KEITH

Robert (Bob) John March 2, 1928 - March 15, 2016 It is with great sadness that his family announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Keith on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, with his loving family by his side. Bob was born in Chilliwack on 2 March, 1928 to John (Jack) and Muriel Keith and is survived by Lorna, his wife of nearly 64 years, and daughters Kathleen (Ken) Habijanac, Laurie (David) George, son Ian, grandchildren Keryl Billen (Cory), Dianne and Bryan George and Julie Habijanac, brother Gordon (Helen), sister Margaret Ward (Joe), and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Chilliwack High school and then Ontario Agricultural College. He returned to B.C. and was Assistant Herdsman at Tranquille Farms and it was here that he met his wife-to-be; they married and lived in Chilliwack, Bob running the family dairy farm before returning to another family tradition, the feed business. Working for B&K, he was transferred to manage the store in Courtenay, then back to the Fraser Valley to Abbotsford where the family settled. He finished his working career with the Farm Credit Corporation. Bob lived a good and full life. He joined the Masonic Order in 1959 and the Order of the Mystic Shrine in 1982, and was a proud and faithful member of these Orders for the remainder of his life. He lived according to these Orders’ values, to be principled, civil and humble but kept the Scottish Irish humour and the love of music from the home of his upbringing in his own home. He related to the quintessential Canadian pastimes too, with fast ball in which he played in the local men’s league through his 30’s and curling which he played through his 70’s. His passion in his retirement was gardening, especially tending to his beautiful rose garden. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 2:00 pm at Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way, Abbotsford, with a reception following at the church. Heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for Bob during his long battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to Trinity Memorial United Church Memorial Fund. Online condolences to the family may be made at: www.wiebeandjeskefh.com
