Explorer told to stay off property
CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
A local explorer finds himself in hot water after a Gazette story heralding his accomplishments. On Dec. 16, 2015, the Gazette ran an article about Grand Forks resident Frank Schlichting and his adventures exploring the mine shafts around Phoenix as well as flying around Canada. Unfortunately, the principle title owner of the Phoenix Mine site, New Nadina, read the article and have reached out to Schlichting saying he is trespassing and has stolen property from the mine. New Nadina is the parent company of Kettle River Resources Ltd. which is the registered • See EXPLORER page 7

needed someone to come in and take over the coordination part of it and I could still stay on a little bit as an advisor. It’ll be Jessica Mace who will be leading the work and making sure everything is ready to flow.” Watt said he will continue to support the events already underway with the plan and connecting on some of the shared initiatives between the city and the RKDB around water conservation and protection of the aquifer. Mace originally comes from Ontario but lived in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for the past six past years before coming to Grand Forks with her family. Her first job was doing environmental work on the distant early warning (DEW) line sites. Most recently when living in Yellowknife, she helped clean up contaminated mine sites as a project manager working for Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. “I think it’ll work well,” she said. “I can use my management skills to manage the project. We’ll hire con-
sultants when we need to and work with partners to ensure the implementation of the plan is underway.” With three children under six, Mace has spent her time in Grand Forks mostly as a stay-at-home mom although she has been active in the community with sports and groups such as the agricultural society where she sits on the board. “I think the timing has been really good for looking ahead to the rest of this phase of implementation,” said Watt. “We kind of have an end goal of understanding how to have governance over the watershed. It’s a really complex task.” Watt said the “passing of the baton” is a great chance to refocus on the big initiative to get the big tasks done around drought management, drought response and governance over the complex issue of water. He said it’s important that all the stakeholders work together for the betterment of the project. The stakeholders include the RDKB, local municipalities, agricultural organizations, environmental groups, industries, and more.

The vote came about after a request from the operator/owners of neighbouring Luna Bed and Breakfast to have the city remove the two mature maple tree due to safety concerns and a maple bug infestation. The city received a third party assessment of the trees from arborist Fred Marshall stating that the trees are considered healthy and that removal of the trees would “not measurably affect insect populations.”

Volunteers step up
It’s great to see a number of North Fork residents step up to join Grand Forks Fire/Rescue. An inadequate number of volunteer fire fighters based out of the George Evans Fire Hall would have meant sky rocketing insurance rates for residents not to mention the loss of security for people in the area. “Having these fire fighters there means now we have enough people to have an adequate response time,” said deputy chief Kevin McKinnon. “Having 10 firefighters gives us a much better chance of having an adequate response out of that hall.” For those who stepped up—kudos to you. It’s not an easy job and although there is a stipend for time spent training and working, firefighters can spend a lot of time away from their loved ones doing an often dangerous job. Of course, the rewards go far beyond the financial aspect. Volunteer firefighters are part of a team that must work together to be successful. Besides teamwork, firefighters are trained and gain skills in a wide variety of areas such as first aid, air brakes, vehicle extraction, fire suppression, swift water rescue, hazardous material, and so on. It’s not uncommon to hear firefighters talk about their fellow firefighters as family; and what’s more important than family?

March is a season of madness On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY The first two rounds of March Madness are over. The NCAA college basketball tournament is always a hotly contested, action-packed three weeks. The first couple of rounds are famous for upsets and this year was no exception as second seeded Michigan State fell to the 15th seed from Middle Tennessee State. Stephen F. Austin, a 14th seed, beat 3rd seeded West Virginia as well. Of course, many people up here follow the Gonzaga Bulldogs from nearby Spokane. After a season in which they struggled to even get to the tournament, the 11th seeded Zags upset Seton Hall (6th seed) on
Thursday and then crushed 3rd seeded Utah 82-59 on Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16. Gonzaga will need big games from star players Domantas Sabonis and Kyle Wiltjer to get past Syracuse Friday. But after this past weekend I wouldn’t bet against the Bulldogs. Speaking of things that are sweet, or quite possibly mad, another election is forthcoming in Grand Forks. Byelection
After a long wait, Grand Forks will finally have its byelection to fill the vacated Michael Wirischagin seat. The general voting day will be Saturday, May 28. Candidates have from April 12 to 22 to file their nomination papers. As with any election, this will be a telling one. The results
should show the pulse of the electorate. Although a few people have put their names out on social media, we won’t know for sure everyone who has put their name forward until after the nomination period ends. Do residents go for a familiar face? An experienced former council member perhaps? Or do they go for a new face? One that may have a new, fresh look on issues. It’s hard to say and should make for some interesting choices on May 28 for voters. Is the water mater issue still important to voters? What about the deer? Whatever happened to the deer committee and the cull? If nothing else has come out of the first year and a half of this council it’s that working together and communicating is much more effective than attacking each other.

The new councillor can be part of a well-oiled machine that helps the city move forward. Unfortunately, the possibility of someone coming in and disturbing the balance even further exists. Yes, the voting process can be seen as a popularity contest. Hopefully voters see past the rhetoric and look at each candidates’ past records and work for the community. Are they a builder or a destroyer? Are they looking to be part of a team or a thorn in the side of the city? There’s nothing wrong with having a differing viewpoint and saying your piece; but each councillor has one vote and sometimes it doesn’t go your way. Once the vote goes, council must work together and direct staff in a positive manner forward.

to the editor
Park not the place for housing Editor, The Gazette: Firstly I’d like to say that regardless of how Christina Lake’s Feb. 16 “open house” and meeting was run, or should have been run, depending on your views, I don’t think any citizen of Christina Lake is opposed to building senior housing. There are plenty of properties available here for people 55+ that may be looking for it. What we in fact should be considering is affordable senior housing that will provide different levels of care for the seniors who are in need. Lot 498, the Christina Lake Nature Park, I feel is not the place for the purposed “55+” senior housing development. This beautiful park is already inhabited. There are 139 species of birds known to have occurred at the park. Ten of those are on the Blue list as per the Ministry of Environment’s species at risk. That is to say, an indigenous species or subspecies which is considered to be of concern. There are 28 species of mammals reported seen within Lot 498, and though studies have not been made on shrews, bats, mice or voles, there are at least 14 that could very well be present as reported in Mammals of B.C. by Cowan and Guiguet. The rubber boa, blue racer and gopher snake, all uncommon, as well as the painted turtle, garter snake, alligator lizard, salamanders, and various frogs all call this place home. The insects and plant species both terrestrial and aquatic all play a very important role in keeping this entire habitat healthy and vibrant. Although you may not actually
see wildlife, even the areas within the park that have been referred to as “ scrubby,” and “awful looking,” the tracks and traces of many species are there for those who care to look. These areas are just getting back to their natural state, so given a little help, and protection they would do just that. A short distance down Christina Creek is the home of the jewel winged damselfly, another blue listed species, and the olive club tail dragon fly, which is Red listed. The committee on the status of endangered species in Canada have ranked it an E, which means a species facing imminent extirpation or extinction. The proposed development will definitely have a negative impact on this important habitat further downstream. In fact Christina Creek is the last undisturbed warm water creek habitat left in Southern British Columbia interior. Ecosystems are profoundly local, based on individual interactions of individual organisms. It may be debatable how much it matters to nature how many species there are on the planet as a whole. But it is clear that local biodiversity matters a very great deal. Knowing this, should we risk our very own local species that are depending on us and charge ahead to develop more natural habitat? We have to be the guardians of our own backyards and of our shared communities. Please let’s take action and save whatever we can. I’m asking the Senior Citizen’s Housing Society to consider this so perhaps it may take precedence over the bottom line. Sue Walker, Christina Lake

The young attendant volunteered to offer $20 in gas if that was enough to get me where I was going. Did she break a company rule or policy? Probably. Did she show compassion for a fellow human being who needed help? Definitely. We had never met before and to put trust

in someone you do not know, especially a different generation was extremely heartwarming. I have no doubt all of us in the older generations hope we will be treated with respect. I hope with gestures such as this we return the favour. On March 18, I did and then some. I hope she has a wonderful life, she deserves it. A. Macleod, Trail, B.C.

Opera in a chill-out world I am, along with a number of others in the Boundary, a huge fan of New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Luckily the Royal Theatre in Trail has been bringing in the Met’s live theatre transmissions for the past five opera seasons. On select Saturdays between October and April, the Met stage virtually unrolls in front of our noses, along with world-class musicians, stage direction, high definition sound, and up-close-and-personal backstage views and interviews. The productions are consistently outstanding but a few stand out beWaxing cause of their legendary status. Madame Butterfly would be one of those and she’s in Trail Lyrical this Saturday, April 2. Most people agree that what makes Gia- J. KATHLEEN THOMPSON como Puccini’s masterpiece—Madama Butterfly—so unforgettable is the story: a young Japanese geisha is wed and forthwith abandoned by an American naval officer. Her unwavering vigil for his return, despite being ostracized from her family, enduring financial hardship, and raising their child on her own, meets a heartbreaking end (and yes, an adaptation of this story was used for the musical Miss Saigon). The music beautifully underscores the whimsy and tragedy of this young geisha’s love. Un Bel Di (One Fine Day) and Coro a Bocca Chiusi (The Humming Chorus) are the two most heartwrenchingly famous “tunes” from this opera. Should you be tempted to dip your toes into the opera world, however, be prepared for your modern sensibilities to be a tad ruffled. At the last Met production—Turandot by Puccini (set in mythical China)—within 15 minutes into the opera we were beset by seemingly unproblematic sexism, racism, ageism and violence in the opera libretto (script). And then there seemed to be another large issue—that of the EQ factor of the principal characters. From what I have observed, the principal characters in operas are notoriously lacking in emotional intelligence. A greed, a hunger, an ambition or a quest inevitably consumes them with passions we label “unhealthy” today: anger, jealousy, resentment, lust, hatred, despair or intransigence. They’re either after a wrong woman/man, made a promise that costs too much to keep, have lost that which is important to them (love, power, position) or are gnashing teeth about something that has offended their pride. In an opera, emotions ignite the stage and drive the plot, carrying characters headlong into spectacular finishes that are more often disastrous than triumphant. This is where we get a bit rattled—the dialed up emotion and some of the unforgiveable missteps of the principals flummox our modern day spiritual or psychological compasses. Guides to a happy life today urge us to cultivate an inner peace by weeding out emotions that will impede our connectedness with the world. Mindful, selfregulated approaches to our relationships, careers and desires are believed to be the key to a quiet mind and a peaceful world. How antithetical and unenlightened, then, are the outbursts of emotion, the stirring pledges of fidelity to the unattainable, the cries from the depths of the soul that are the warp and weft of opera! But we continue to tolerate these self-indulgent, anachronistic displays of emotion because without them, we’d have a tepid story. To fill an operatic stage, to give singers a reason to plumb the possibilities of their instrument, we need to give them something to sing about. So the story needs to be dramatic and replete with people with a lot more heart than sense. There’s no such thing as a cold and calculating hero, an unruffled heroine, an epic comedy—this is life at its most colossal, its most intense. It’s the stuff of tall tales, myths, allegories and mortals learning immortal truths. Perhaps our divas are just the stand-ins for human folly everywhere, allowing us to heed the lessons their stories portray. Opera heroes as scapegoats? As fallen angels? Or as momentary flashes of honesty from what has become an emotionally flattened, albeit much more reasoned world? Whatever it is, the carthasis effected by being in the presence of those who are expressing the gamut of what it means to be human—the dark and the sublime— is undeniable. I think it’s good to let it all hang out—in a gloriously constructed art form—once in a while. Besides, guaranteed, you’ll love the music. (Madame Butterfly shows at The Royal Theatre, 1598 Bay Street, Trail, 9:55 a.m. Saturday, April 2. Tickets are $24 each and are available at the door.) J. owner of the many Crown grants (surface and/or undersurface), the old open pit as well as mineral tenure over the area. A representative from the company said that under Ministry of Energy and Mines regulations, Kettle River Resources is to keep the public out of the area. Schlichting told the Gazette he received a warning letter from New Nadina in December after the article came out. “I guess they read the article and read some stuff on Facebook,” he said. “I talked to them, they sent a copy to a Mines guy and to a member of the RCMP and said they were charging me with trespassing.” Schlichting said he didn’t hear from the RCMP so he followed it up with a call to the detachment. “Basically they said there would be no charges,” he said. “I did quite a bit of research on it. As far as I know if you object to someone being on your property you have to put up a fence and post a warning.” When contacted by the Gazette, Midway RCMP said they were unable to speak to any alleged trespassing on the site. In a Dec. 30, 2015 reply from Schlichting to New Nadina, he stated that mining history is important to the residents and this history should be documented and preserved. “For this reason I think it is important for me to document this history,” Schlichting wrote to New Nadina. “I understand your reluctance to grant permission for persons to enter on to lands that your firm has a interest in because of liability issues that may arise on those lands if an injury or

loss were to occur.” On Feb. 25 by letter, New Nadina responded by stating, “We’ve determined you misrepresented your interest in the mine site for history purposes as evidenced through postings/ discussion on Facebook sites ‘Frank Schlichting’ and ‘Boundary Heritage, History and Genealogy.’ Your derogatory remarks and public display of ongoing blatant disregard with encouragement to trespass and access private property shows the disrespectful person I now believe you to be.” In the letter New Nadina stated that owners of private property have certain rights generally respected by most people. “You appear not to respect private property, encouraging followers of the Boundary Heritage, History and Genealogy Facebook blog to do the same,” wrote Ellen Clements of Kettle River Resources Ltd. in the letter. “Where is your respect for the law and the rights of your fellow citizens and residents? What gives you special right or privilege?” The letter went on to say that Schlichting may have duped some of the followers of the Boundary heritage site with misinformation and that “you are ignorant of the mine site responsibilities…the Boundary heritage site, in my opinion, would have better credibility if properly managed and should not condone trespass on private property.” “By public admission you have entered (trespassed) and destroyed reclamation on private property, therefore you are liable for costs to reinstate damage,” wrote Clements.

“You entered private property, without permission, and removed items. Please return these stolen items to our office.” Schlichting posted on Facebook that he had “found” an old dynamite box from the Giant Powder Company in the Phoenix mines with a photo of the box. Clements said that he has not responded to their requests to return items he removed. Clements confirmed that New Nadina has sent letters to Schlichting warning him to refrain from the property. They also sent copies to the regulating mines inspector and the RCMP. Schlichting said even with the letter he is unclear of what property belongs to New Nadina, which is Crown land and which is owned by other title holders. “It’s kind of a complicated issue,” he said. “If there is private land up there that I’ve been on they’re not in a position to object if they don’t own it. If they own land and tell me I can’t go on it, that’s fine. So I’ve asked them to provide me with a list of which titles of the properties they own. I’ve got a map from BC Assessment of all the private property so I could mark it on there and respect that. But they refuse to do that. I don’t even know if they own any property up there.” Ellen Clements of New Nadina (Kettle River Resources) told the Gazette that they have provided Schlichting with a map showing private property and “made several attempts to explain it to him. Any respectful person would not act in this manner.” Clements said that Ket-

Third Street in downtown Grand Forks was closed to all traffic while city crews made repairs to the sewer main for two days last week. At the March 14 Committee of the Whole meeting, Grand Forks City Council considered a request from the Grand Forks Art Gallery Society GFAGS) for an early release of a portion of their funding for 2016 and amendments to their funding and lease agreements with the city. Council accepted the report and voted to refer the request to the March 29 regular city council meeting. GFAGS is requesting the same funding as last year’s
agreement, $142,000 with the payment dates occuring on or before May 15 (50 per cent) and on or before Nov. 1 (50 per cent). However, they are asking for a one-time partial advancement on their first payment, to occur on April 1, of $35,000 leaving a balance of $35,500 to be advanced on or before May 15. The agreement must also be changed due to the fact that the city is no longer paying for the electrical fees. The lease states that those charges will then be the responsibility of the GFAGS.
A letter from GFAGS stated that due to several issues including a previous new executive director, medical leave of the administrative assistant, a new accounting system, and a funding advance out of cycle, they had to review their financial position. “We’re confident the steps we have taken, and will take in the future budgets, will keep the gallery on track and in good fiscal shape,” the letter said. Council voted to accept the letter and directed staff to gather more information.

Join Amanda Bath, author of Disaster in Paradise: The Landslides in Johnson’s Landing for a talk and presentation about her memoir, in Grand Forks. She’ll be speaking at the Grand Forks and District Public Library on Thursday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and books will be available for sale and signing after the presentation. Disaster in Paradise is the first book about the 2012 Johnson’s Landing landslides—two natural disasters that devastated the picturesque Kootenay Lake community. The landslides made national headlines. Author Amanda Bath’s
house was flattened by the first slide only an hour after she left the area, and when she returned less than 24 hours later to try to rescue her cat, she had less than a minute of warning before a second landslide completely buried what remained of her home. Amanda’s escape from the second landslide was caught on video by a news crew who had left the same beach minutes earlier and the footage went viral on YouTube. The process of writing Disaster in Paradise was like therapy for Bath, carrying her through the painful months that followed. Disaster in Paradise is the story of Bath’s trauma and healing, but it is also the story of a
community as it joined together to mourn and gradually rebuild in the wake of tragedy. In total, the landslides destroyed six homes and killed four people: Valentine Webber, aged 60; his daughters, 22-yearold Diana and 17-year-old Rachel; as well as 64-year-old Petra Frehse. The book is both a chronicle of a B.C. tragedy and a warning for the future. With the increasing effects of climate change, disasters like this could easily happen again, and governments need to be prepared; British Columbians need to know the signs. For more information about this event, please contact the Grand Forks and District Public Library at 250-442-3944.

The physical Resurrection of Jesus Christ is central and absolutely critical to the faith of those who call themselves followers of Jesus. That is why the Passion Week which culminates in the Resurrection of Christ is the most important week of the Christian calendar. Showcase returns for 17th year SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
Spring is here, the sun keeps shining—so the Boundary District Arts Council (BDAC) and gallery 2 have joined forces to prepare for the 17th Annual Arts and Culture Boundary Showcase, April 15 - 30. The opening date coincides with World Arts Day/daVinci’s Birthday on April 15. We are inviting all arts and crafts people to enter the showcase. It is wonderful and inspiring to see all the creations and everyone is invited to participate. Application forms are available at gallery 2 and online at boundaryarts.org. Please hand the completed forms in by March 31. The exhibits are to be delivered to gallery 2 for display from April 5 - 9 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. School tours are being planned for Hutton and Perley students who are available on the Tuesdays through Thursdays for those two weeks. The BDAC member groups will host a gala on Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in the Grand Forks Secondary School auditorium featuring dance groups, music students, drama, the Grand Forks Pipes and Drums, and even some magic! Admission is by donation. A reception for all is planned for Saturday, April 23 from 1 - 3 p.m. at gallery 2. It will begin with a short program with speeches, introduction of all participating artists and crafts people and some entertainment.
The Boundary Showcase school tours, as pictured from a previous year, are popular with students. Submitted photo
Refreshments will follow at 1:30 p.m. Stay tuned for details for the planned Arts Crawl for Saturday, April 30. We are proud of all our artists and crafts people (who are also artists) and invite everyone to participate in
two special weeks of “The Arts” in the Boundary celebrating “The Arts in Learning and Life.” For information call gallery 2 at 250442-2211 or Susan at 250-442-2942.

Molly Eichel of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes. “It is the story of a woman who thought she gave up motherhood, but who had been a mother all along— just not to her biological child.”
“The performances are all good, but Casé’s is outstanding... She is a delight, and thanks in large part to her performance, so is The Second Mother.
Written and directed by Anna Muylaert, The Second Mother is a —Bill Goodykoontz - Arizona Republic Brazilian comedic drama which explores the plight of mothers who must look after other people’s children in order to financially support their own. Stephanie Merry of the Washington Post writes, “The Second Mother feels lovingly handcrafted. Volunteers step up to become firefighters ERIN PERKINS
For the Grand Forks Gazette
Fire insurance rates for North Fork residents won’t be going up thanks to seven new firefighting recruits. In November, the North Fork/Brown Creek community was told by Grand Forks Fire/Rescue Fire Chief Dale Heriot that unless the local fire department gained seven new recruits, the George Evans Fire Hall would lose its status. If that happened, the Fire Underwriters Survey (FUS)—which establishes the Public Fire Protection Classification of a community for fire insurance companies—would cause the fire insurance rates to rise significantly due to the distance between the North Fork community and the downtown fire hall in Grand Forks. Any residents living past the eight-kilometre mark would have seen significant increases in their rates. The FUS has graded the North Fork community as semi-protected but that

grade would have dropped to unprotected had the hall closed, said Grand Forks Fire/Rescue Deputy Chief Kevin McKinnon. Since the meeting in November, the community responded. Last week six of the seven newest members of the George Evans Fire Hall started their training at the weekly practice evening at the Grand Forks Fire Hall. The George Evans Fire Hall will now have the 10 volunteers necessary to keep the hall going. “We’re glad to have the recruits,” said veteran firefighter lieutenant John Billwill-
er the morning after the training session. “It’s a good beginning.” “I’m very pleased we’ve got the seven we’ve got,” agreed McKinnon. “It is the bare minimum, though. We’d like to get one or two more. It is impressive to get this number of people to step up and help.” While keeping their fire insurance rates down was at the top of the new recruits drive to get involved, it certainly wasn’t their only reason. Recruit James Hall has returned to the department after a few years away—he took a hiatus while his children were little. Now he’s back and he said the training

As a basic first aid trainer for Selkirk College in addition to his swift water technician training, Hall finds being a volunteer both rewarding and professionally enriching. “I (returned) to keep the insurance rates where they are at and I feel I can also contribute to the community,” said Hall, who would have seen a nearly $4,500 increase in the insurance rates for his ranch if the hall had closed. “I’m already willing to help my neighbours, so I might as well do it in a more organized and professional

She has never been a firefighter before and is looking forward to learning some new skills. “When I heard that our local fire hall, George Evans, would be decommissioned if it was unable to recruit the minimum volunteers, I became concerned for our community,” said Hockley, who lives on New recruit and North Fork resident Jennifer Reece, centre, gets a rural property in the Brown some help adjusting her suspenders from Lieutenant John Billwiller Creek area. “Not only would and Grand Forks Fire/Rescue Department member and RCMP conwe all face massive increases to stable Nicki-Jo Wolfram. our insurance policies but we on occasion we’ll be at the mercy of our abilities would lose a rural safety net. In the meantime, the hall will continue to be supported by the Grand Forks department, as it always has been. The vermiculture demonstration area was only one aspect of the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society (GFBRAS) annual Seedy Saturday event at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Seedy Saturday was an opportunity to share and exchange seeds, connect with the food growing community, check out the Seed Bank and sign up to be a seed bank steward. There were plants for sale and an opportunity to join the community garden; the society’s seed winnower, which is available for loan, was also on display. to the Grand Forks Gazette
Families, friends and outdoor enthusiasts can get ready for another exciting season of camping with the BC Parks reservation system, Discover Camping, opening soon. Discover Camping is now accepting reservations for most campgrounds. Individual camping sites in many provincial parks can be booked up to three months in advance through the Discover Camping website or via the call centre. New for the 2016 camping season, families can now reserve campsites in Dry Gulch, Inland Lake and sxwexwnitkw (Okanagan Falls) provincial parks. There are also reservable campsites at Ruckle Provincial Park, as well as two brandnew group camping sites at Syringa and Kootenay Lake provincial parks. For more adventurous campers, two small, rustic trapper’s cabins in Wells Gray Provincial Park are now reservable for the first time this year. Groups can also now book their favourite picnic spots at Summit Lake, Ten Mile Lake, Lac La Hache and Green Lake provincial parks. Discover Camping, the interactive reservation website, displays the availability, layout and amenities at 122 campgrounds—showcasing more than 5, 800 campsites—throughout British Columbia. Campers can also book their vacation destinations through their smartphones. Approximately half of all BC Parks camping opportunities remain on a first-come, firstserved basis.

and sticks; a friend, Gisele Leclair, helped me move the drum to my home. We received a warning as the box of drum sticks were loaded in our vehicle. “The ends of the drum sticks are known to fly off when we drum!” “I’ll fix them!” I replied. As we were about to close the door of the church, our eyes locked, Juno’s eyes welled up with tears, my heart filled, deeply feeling her letting go and our receiving. Bless you, Juno. Since then, community members have visited the drum in my home, our community is thrilled to have this sacred gift, we are indeed excited and grateful. Shivers have run through more than one visitor when they gently tap the drum’s surface. (We were careful not to wake her up.) The History
Editor’s Note: The following, written by Jean Lloyd, is the history of a drum and how it came to be gifted to the Boundary Metis Community Association as well as the words said while reawakening the drum. When I shared my dream of fundraising to build a large drum for the Metis at a circuit training class, Rosalie Moore said she thought there was a large drum in the basement of the Anglican church, she would check and let me know next class. The drum was indeed at the church! I recently read in the Gazette that Simon Shenstone had retired, it seemed there was a shift was happening (and the drum might be available), Rosalie encouraged me to phone Juno. I did phone Juno Shenstone, introducing myself with my Metis treasurer hat on, and told Juno our association was looking for a large drum and I understood there was such a drum in the church basement. I mentioned an All Nations Art Show in the VISAC art gallery in Trail during the late 1990’s or early 2000’s; the large drum scheduled to open that exhibition cancelled two weeks before the opening. I was somehow directed to call the Shenstones, I am not even sure how I got their name. They agreed to drum. I shared Youngsters (from left) Brooklynn with Juno on the phone, Sterling, Trinity Anthony and Elizahow over the years I had beth Scow have a laugh at the drum so much gratitude when I reawavkening and pot luck dinner at thought of them; the cou- the senior’s hall on Monday. hoop and stand for Juno’s drum. One of the first drummers gifted the drum with a brown leather pouch, the pouch may have tobacco or sage in it and during the time of the pouch being made, there were grouse drumming in the yard of the gifter…she added grouse feathers to the pouch, a tiny, delicate sweet grass braid, a small heart shaped rose quartz stone, a tiny turquoise heart and a dark coloured bead. A local artisan prepared the buffalo rawhide (from a northern B.C. buffalo), and the elk rawhide for the drum. The rawhides were prepared right here in Grand Forks and gifted to the Shenstone’s for this beautiful drum. The two sides have their own resonance, their own vibration; together, the drum’s voices capture our hearts. The artisan who donated the rawhides suggests that when people create a drum they know it is not permanent, the drum will have its own life span, drums are not made to last forever. I believe I can speak for our community and say we intend to honour our drum’s life span, in gratitude. This drum is a Grand Forks drum, born from the love of community, through the hands of generous artisans and with the care of Juno and Simon Shenstone, the drum’s builders…blessings to you both for working together to balance female and male energy in bringing this drum to life! Today, in our reawakening the drum, we honour the larch used to create the drum hoop and stand, the buffalo and elk for giving their lives to be here with us in this beautiful drum. We send blessings to Juno and Simon Shenstone for the work they did together to bring this drum to life. We bless Rosalie Moore who directed us to the drum. Awakened in the late 1990’s, our drum’s short history consisted of perhaps half a dozen or so events, the most recent was about five years ago when a school group borrowed her. Now, please welcome Simon Shenstone in the singing of the Lakota Four Directions Songreawakening our drum with the same song she was awakened with many years ago. We are proud to announce our new Drum Keeper, Jo White. All Our Relations, Ho!

Three Tax Tips for B.C. Homeowners
VANCOUVER, March 21, 2016 – Homeowners can have many questions regarding their income tax filings. The Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia (CPABC) has compiled answers to to three of the most frequently asked questions about income tax filing for homeowners in B.C.: 1. I bought a home in 2015. Do I qualify for the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit? If you acquired a qualifying home, you might qualify for a first-time home buyers’ tax credit (HBTC), which is a non-refundable tax credit worth up to about $750. Generally, to be eligible for the HBTC, the following conditions must be met: 1. You, (or your spouse or common-law partner) must acquire a qualifying home; and 2. Neither you nor your spouse or common-law partner owned and lived in another home in the year of purchase or in any of the four preceding calendar years. A qualifying home is a housing unit located in Canada, acquired after January 27, 2009, and which can be an existing home or one that is being constructed. The home must also be intended to be used as your principal place of residence within one year after acquisition to qualify. This credit may be claimed in the year the qualifying home is acquired. Either you or your spouse or common-law partner can claim this non-refundable tax credit or you can share the credit. However, the total of both claims cannot exceed $750. For more information about the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, visit: www.rrspandtaxtips.com and consult a Chartered Professional Accountant. 2. What is the principal residence exemption? Most of us know that Canada provides an exemption from taxation for capital gains realized on the sale of a “principal residence”. As simple as this may sound, the rules can be complex. • The gain on the sale of your “principal residence” is not tax-free. The gain is taxable to you in the year of sale except to the extent the gain is offset with your “principal residence exemption”. • A principal residence is a housing unit ordinarily inhabited in the year for which it is being designated by you as a principal residence. This
does not require the housing unit be lived in by you on a full-time basis throughout the year but generally it means you must have lived in it at some point in the year. • The principal residence includes the land around the housing unit subject to certain limitations. Generally a maximum of half a hectare of land will be considered to be part of the principal residence but there are exceptions to this rule. • Only one property may be designated as a principal residence in any particular year for you, your spouse and your minor children. • Where the gain from the sale of your personal residence results in business income or “capital cost allowance recapture” as opposed to a capital gain, that income cannot be offset by your principal residence exemption. • You can designate a rental property as your principal residence, subject to certain limitations, if you resided in the property before or after the rental period and filed the appropriate tax elections. Consult a Chartered Professional Accountant if you have questions about how best to utilize your principal residence exemption or if you are considering selling a property and you are not sure you can claim your principal residence exemption. 3. I’ve begun to use my residence as a rental property. How will that impact my taxes? If, during the year, you begin to use your residence or former residence as a rental property, you have what is called a “change in use”, which results in a deemed disposition of the property at its fair market value at the time. Similar rules apply when you have a change in use of a rental property or a former rental property to a residence. The change in use could lead to a significant and unexpected income tax liability. Special elections are available to avoid or defer the deemed disposition in certain circumstances. Consult a Chartered Professional Accountant if you have had a recent change in use of a property to understand the income tax implications and make sure the required elections are filed. Border Bruins bestow awards CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
After an amazing season that saw the Bruins make the playoffs for the first time in 19 years, it was time to honour the players that got the job done. On March 13 the Border Bruins held their year-end awards banquet upstairs at the Station Pub and gave away several awards. Taking home overall team most valuable player (MVP) award was goalie Anthony Galliart. Galliart had a great season keeping the Bruins close in many games as he picked up goalie of the year for the division. “The voting for MVP was quite spread out,” said head coach Emery Olauson. “Dylan Haney had a bunch of votes leading us in goals. He scored a whole bunch of important game-winning goals all season. Chad Grambo leading us in scoring got some votes as well. He also came up huge during the clutch. Leading us on the blueline, Connor Manegre was up there.” Olauson said the team has 1st, 2nd and 3rd ballots in each category and Galliart placed in the
top three in every player’s voting for team MVP. “Everyone thought he was in the mix,” said Olauson. “Even when the team wasn’t playing sound hockey at the start of the year he was giving us a chance. He gave us a chance to win on quite a few nights.” Winning for perseverance and dedication was Nikki Leeder; player’s choice award went to Brandon Savaia; most improved award went to Grayson Neufeld; most sportsmanlike went to team captain Bryson Yee; best defenceman was awarded to Connor Manegre; most goals and most points went to Dylan Haney (goals-20) and Chad Grambo (points-41); rookie of the year was split between Haney, Grambo and Jordan Robertson; unsung hero Logan Hascarl; and play-off MVP Austin Dean. “Dean led us with a point a game in the play-offs,” said Olauson. “With the exception of a few games against Castlegar points were hard to come by in the playoffs. He seemed to always to be in the mix. Pretty impressive particularly for a rookie we picked up off other teams rosters.”
Coach Emery Olauson presented trophies to all the Border Bruin award winners at the team’s year end banquet Sunday. Above, goalie Anthony Galliart with the team MVP trophy. Craig Lindsay photos

No contract yet for Bruins’ coach
CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
In the story on page 18 of last week’s Gazette titled “Playoff run ends for Border Bruins,” the story states that Bruin coach/ general manager Emery Olauson has yet to receive any contract offer from the Bruins’ organization. That is true; however, the Gazette did not contact the Bruin’s board of directors for their statement. In an email to the Gazette, Martin Vanlerberg, Bruins’ president, said, “In January a sub-committee of the board of directors was formed to begin contract discussions with Coach Olauson. They met and have yet to hear back from Olauson as to what he is looking for in terms of a contract extension. It is believed that Olauson will enter contract negotiations once the new board is formed after the annual general meeting on April 8.” Olauson said he did meet with two board members, but his understanding is that it is now up to the board to draft a contract proposal.

Author releases free One Seed download
Local writer-author, singer-songwriter Rosemary Phillips has just released One Seed and The Whales’ Secret, children’s books, songs and videos, as free downloads—timely, on the heels of the Seedy Saturday event held on Saturday, and as schools begin their seed programs when they return to school following spring break. Phillips said, “This comes after the huge success of the YouTube One Seed Video that now has over 570,000 viewings.” Children around the world have experienced One Seed in the home and classroom for everything from biology and seed programs, to character building and ideas, and even for programs on courage and how one person (seed) can make a difference. Teachers from several countries have sent along over 300 drawings that are now posted on the One Seed Kids Art Gallery (www.oneseedkidsart.com). The video, story and song have been used for assemblies, Earth Day, and for Kindergarten graduations. The song has been shared in peace and environmental awareness movements, in churches and with spiritual and community groups, and locally in concerts. One Seed was originally published and printed in Grand Forks in 2002 with assistance from a self-employment initiative and a loan from Community Futures. That first edition was a simply-illustrated black-and-white book with one colour plate. That same year the read-along story and singalong song were recorded in Grand Forks with John Vere at Cactus Music along with the vocal talents of Clare and Darbye Turner, and Leah, Monique and Marc Peron, the original “seeds.” In 2010 the second edition was published as a little book in English, French (as Une Petite Graine) and Persian. It was produced in full colour by Phillips herself on a laser printer. It is presently awaiting reprint. Meanwhile Phillips has released all versions free as PDF e-books. The newly revised English One Seed PDF also includes pages from the educational video about seeds, seeds as ideas, and includes several images from the Kids Art Gallery. Phillips is also thrilled to be releasing The Whales’ Secret, a storybook (metaphor) about life which, besides highlighting beautiful paintings by artist Julie Draper, also features drawings from children. Phillips is now retired from her publicity and writing work for the Vancouver Island Symphony, Songs Strings and Steps, British Columbia Boys Choir, and various national and international performing artists, and in her new home just west of Grand Forks is making plans to record more songs and publish children’s stories that have been waiting in the wings. To obtain the free downloads visit: www. quillsquotesandnotes.com or www.oneseedstory.com or www.thewhalessecret.com.
