COTR launches new program in Kenya College of the Rockies, in partnership with Camosun College, has been contracted by the Lundin Foundation to

conduct training for the Lodwar Vocational Training Centre (LVTC) in Lodwar, Kenya. Training will be provid-

Wednesday, March 23, 2016 Kootenay News Advertiser ed to LVTC’s Board of Governors as well as to the Centre’s instructors. The Lundin Foundation, founded in 2005 by the Lundin family, works with publicly traded natural resource companies to design, implement and monitor projects that benefit communities in Africa. The Foundation chose College of the Rockies

to provide training to LVTC because of the College’s expertise and success with previous projects in East Africa. The project officially kicked off in June 2015. In January, College of the Rockies President David Walls and Executive Director of International and Regional Development Patricia Bowron visited Lodwar

College of the Rockies’ President and CEO, David Walls (far right), and Executive Director of International and Regional Development, Patricia Bowron (fourth from right) provided training to the Lodwar Vocational Training Centre’s Board of Governors in Lodwar, Kenya. and co-led a training session for the LVTC’s Board of Governors. Using College of the Rockies Strategic Plan 2015-2020 as a guide, Walls and Bowron helped the LVTC Board develop strategic goals for their own institution. “The LVTC Board of Governors were highly committed during the governance and strategic planning training,” says College of the Rockies

WE’RE HUMBLED. SUBARU OWNERS, HOWEVER, OUGHT TO BE FORGIVEN FOR TOOTING THEIR OWN HORNS.

A highly regarded consumer testing magazine recently named Subaru to an exclusive list of the world’s top automotive brands. While the news is very flattering, we’re happy to remind ourselves that our cars and crossovers are at their best when getting groceries, running the kids to practice or heading out to our favourite fishing spot on a mucky back road. Isn’t it time you asked yourself if a Subaru is right for you?

President, David Walls. “Though they are a volunteer Board with other jobs and responsibilities, they came to the training each day with the energy and enthusiasm required to take LVTC to the next level.” Providing the training had its challenges in 38 degree heat with no air conditioning, so Walls and Bowron did their best to supplement theory with applied learning opportunities. “We facilitated discussions with the Board on their specific challenges and opportunities and these were used as incentives to complete their own Strategic Plan,” Walls continues. “The Board members were able to envision how the information being presented could help them to position LVTC to where they want to see it.” Their strategy seems to have been successful. When polled by Lundin representatives at the conclusion of the training, Walls and Bowron were given good reviews. During their two weeks in Kenya, a new training building at LVTC opened and equipment needed for training students arrived – all made possible through funding provided by the Lundin Foundation. “The Lundin Foundation is proud to support skills development capacity in Turkana County by delivering modern and fully equipped training infrastructure and building human capacity at the LVTC,” notes Joy Muballe, Program Manager, East & Southern Africa – Lundin Foundation. “College of the Rockies is an important partner in developing management capabilities and strengthening instructor’s competence at the institution” “It was a worthwhile trip,” Walls concludes. “It was very rewarding to feel like we were contributing to the advancement of this developing region of Kenya.”

Supreme Court will hear Ktunaxa Nation’s Qat’muk appeal The Supreme Court of Canada announced today that it will hear the Ktunaxa Nation’s appeal to set aside the August 6, 2015 B.C. Court of Appeal decision that found B.C.’s approval of a Master Development Agreement for the resort in an area known as Qat’muk did not violate the Ktunaxa’s Charter right to

freedom of religion, saw no problem with B.C.’s failure to even consider that right, and determined that B.C.’s consultation with the Ktunaxa regarding their constitutionally protected Aboriginal rights was reasonable. “We are pleased with today’s ruling from the Supreme Court,” said Kathryn Teneese,

Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair. “Our right to freedom of religion should not be held in less regard than that of other Canadians. We are confident that the Supreme Court of Canada will agree that Ktunaxa beliefs and practices are vital to who we are and must be taken into account by statutory decision makers. This

2016 GMC Sierra Overall: The heavy hauling 2500 and 3500 (3/4-ton and one-ton) HD models have some minor updates for 2016, including an available fifth-wheel prep package straight from the factory. Drivetrain: Base 360-horsepower 6.0-litre gasoline V8 is back with a version that can be switched to compressed natural gas; optional 6.6-litre turbo-diesel spools out 765 pound-feet of torque; six-speed transmissions for all. Selecting a big-rig Sierra over a similar Chevrolet Silverado HD mostly boils down to which body style you prefer since both pickups are identical beneath the

shiny paint. However one other important difference is that the GMC offers the luxury-laden Denali crew cab, in addition to the base, SLE and SLT trim levels. Chevrolet doesn’t. The usual cab styles return, including the double-cab with rear doors that are hinged at the front. Both the 66-inch and 96-inch cargo boxes have been strengthened and the rear bumper has built-in recessed steps at the corners for easier bed access. All HD powertrains return unaltered for 2016. The base 6.0-litre gasoline V8 puts out 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. For serious grunt work, there’s the optional 6.6-litre turbo-diesel V8 rated at

397 horsepower and 765 poundfeet. Both employ six-speed automatic transmissions: a GMdeveloped Hydramatic comes with the 6.0; and the turbo-diesel employs an Allison-built unit. Chevy mates its “smart exhaust brake system” to the turbo-diesel that, when the vehicle is coasting, holds compressed exhaust gasses inside the engine’s cylinders, creating resistance, which in turn slows down the truck without touching the brakes. The result is less wear and tear on the brake hardware and greater control for the driver, especially when hauling or towing heavy loads downhill. Included is a stability program that reduces a trailer’s

tendency to wander about, while hill-start assist prevents the HD from rolling backward when on an uphill incline. For the 2016 model year, the Sierra HD gains available active steering assist, which helps keep the truck in its lane regardless of load, and a fifth-wheel gooseneck trailer prep package can be ordered straight from the factory rather than as an accessory. Also new this time around is the way the HD’s maximum towing is measured, which means conventional towing capacity is up to 9,000 kilograms, while fifth-wheel capacity remains 10,520. As is the case with all GMC pickups, the level of content, body and powertrain

customization is practically limitless, guided only by your specific needs and budget. Base price (incl. destination): $38,900 (2015) Type: Heavy-duty three-quarter/one-ton pickup Base Engine (hp): 6.0-litre OHV V8 (360) Optional engine (hp): 6.6-litre OHV V8, turbo-diesel (397) Layout: Front-engine, rear- / four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): n/a Weight (kg): 2,630

Refugee group’s fundraising pays off Community engagement in the Kimberley Refugee Resettlement Group (KRRG) got a boost from two sold-out Middle Eastern dinners last week. Altogether KRRG raised over $2,500 toward the initial $15,000 that must be in KRRG’s checking account before the actual process of welcoming new families to Kimberley can begin. Just ahead are more opportunities to move the group closer to its initial financial goal. First, a look at the successes on March 9 and 11, when more than 80 people gathered at The Green Door for a fourcourse Middle Eastern dinner plus surprises. In addition to building a stronger existing community around abundantly spread tables, guests broadened their experience of Middle Eastern culture. They savored regional dishes, enjoyed the company of new friends and longtime acquaintances, and joined in the fun of a raffle for unusual prizes donated by generous local individuals and businesses. And assuring a lively crowd, on Wednesday the Anadil Dancers delighted and on Friday, Tim Park plied guests with extra potent Middle Eastern coffee throughout the evening. Kimberley residents Allan and Jill Sayegh prepared and co-hosted the two Middle Eastern feasts, with Green Door’s chef Jamie Funk enthusiastically supporting the effort in the kitchen. They were guided by recipes Mr. Sayegh’s mother brought with her to Canada when she left the part of Syria that is now Lebanon. In addition to tasty results from the kitchen, diners were treated to Ty Turner’s enthusiastic support in the dining room along with other Green Door helpers. Their clever decorating efforts assured a festive Middle Eastern atmosphere for the occasion. Musicians Jay Robinson and Nathan Taron filled both evenings with music. Participants were urged to increase their own involvement with KRRG, both as financial contributors and as volunteers. On Wednesday, Peggy Frederikse, KRRG’s Chair (pictured with co-host Allan Sayegh) shared her enthusiasm

EK Regional Science Fair thrills and amazes once again Once again the East Kootenay Regional Science Fair attracted some of the best young minds in the region. With 400 people attending on Friday and another 200 attending on Saturday, it also attracted people interested in science. With 148 student participants displaying 128 projects, judges were hard pressed to narrow down their choices for winners. This year’s competition was themed ‘The

Science of Sport and Health’ and the projects included displays on concussions, sport injury prevention, nutrition, sporting equipment and even a study on Australopithecus Afarensis delving into how bone structure can affect the ability to stand upright. “All of the exhibits presented interesting and fun science information for the students and adults,” said Anita Savage, spokesperson for the Fair. The winners of this

year’s competition are: • Sienna Longo, a grade 8 student with the Fernie Academy with the project ‘Growing Pains’ • Rory Smith, a grade 9 student at Laurie Middle School with the project ‘Effects of Polyphenols on E-coli Bacteria’ • Emma Morgan, a grade 9 student at the Fernie Academy with the project ‘Measuring Knee Stress with a Mechanical Model The Best of the Fair

Project was also won by Rory Smith. Those winners will be carrying on to the Canada Wide Science Fair held from May 14 to 21 in Montreal. But the fair is not only about getting prizes for projects. It is about learning as well and to that end, the guest speakers provided information and experience to the attendees. Dr. Dean Kriellars gave lectures on physical literacy, multi-sport activities, movement preparation and the art and science of the circus. Cory Cameron discussed the hot topic of concussions in youth sport. Rob Niedermayer and Joel Savage talked to students about their own experiences playing professional hockey including injury and preparation. There was also a fun event on Saturday, where the Association of Professional Engi-

neers and Geoscientists of BC held the very popular bridge building contest presentation. This is where students can build bridges using specific criteria and then see how much pressure they can withstand during demolition. It should be noted that events such as this are not possible without the

volunteers. This year there were 49 professional science judges and 6 people running the data entry for every project, 10 facilitators that were education students from the College of the Rockies (COTR), businesses that bring exhibits and offer science professionals to judge projects, and the Knights of Columbus

that help run the registration process. There is also the seven committee members that organize and run the event. “It takes a community to run a science fair as school districts, parents, COTR, community and businesses all take part,” said Savage.

Cranbrook para-cyclist captures gold in World Championships

Cranbrook’s Tristen Chernove after winning gold at the Para-cycling Track World Championships. Canada is off to a strong start at the Paracycling Track World Championships in Montichiari, Italy. On Thursday, the first day of competition, Tristen Chernove of Cranbrook, BC, won the Men’s C2 Individual Pursuit title, while Ross Wilson of Edmonton, AB, took

the silver medal in the Men’s C1 Individual Pursuit competition. These championships are the final qualification event for the track competition at the Paralympics that will take place later this year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Chernove, who is attending his first Track

Worlds, was the dominant rider in his category, qualifying first with a time of 3:43.609, almost five seconds faster then the second place rider, Colin Lynch of Ireland. Despite a protest that tried to have him reclassified to C3 between the qualifier and the gold medal final – which was denied by officials – Chernove went on to beat Lynch by over nine seconds to win the world title. “The race was great,” said Chernove. “Obviously, anytime you accomplish what you were going for it feels great. The whole day was fantastic. This was my first time competing at a world level event, and it’s been a big day of learning. I’m just thankful to all the people who got me here; especially my family and colleagues. Without all those people behind me, I couldn’t have been

here.” In the Men’s C1 competition, Ross Wilson came in as the defending silver medalist. Wilson faced the same athlete who beat him for the world title last

year – Zhangyu Li of China. Li proved once again to be the strongest in qualifying, beating second placed Wilson by 2.618 seconds, and then again in the gold medal race, however,

Wilson significantly closed the time gap from the previous year, showing strong improvement as he builds towards the Paralympics. “I think the qualifier went very well,” com-

mented Wilson. “I knew I was on really good form coming into this event; I’ve done a lot of work with my coach, Cam Jennings.”

It’s all smiles with Tim Hortons gift to hospital by Cassandra Schwarz It was all smiles at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital this week when Matt Gareau, Owner of Tim Hortons outlets in Cranbrook and his management team joined members of the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary (CHCA) and East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH) to welcome the arrival of some very special equipment for the hospital’s orthopedic department.

The purchase of a cordless drill set for the department is only possible from the generosity of people like you who supported the 2015 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign. Together the two Tim Hortons outlets, the CHCA and EKFH sold individual, by the ½ or full dozen and case lots of cookies raising $18,760 to support the equipment purchase. The cordless drill set is an electrically operated device, which is used by

surgeons to drill holes through the bones to fix implants during orthopedic surgeries. The annual smile cookie campaign has been supporting health care in the region for over a decade making a lasting impact in many areas of care at the regional hospital. The CHCA, EKFH and Tim Hortons are incredibly grateful for the continued support and thank you for the smile you too have left behind.

Dr. Bernie Driedger, Orthopedic Surgeon (centre), Tim Hortons’ staff, CHCA members and EKFH staff take time to celebrate the arrival of the new cordless drill set.

3 Facts You Need To Know About

Support for BC Seniors

1. We all know seniors retain better health when they feel more independent. The Minister of Health has introduced legislation that will allow seniors to remain in assisted living facilities longer – in many cases enabling them to remain with a loved one or spouse longer, too. 2. Under previous requirements, seniors who needed assistance with more than two “prescribed personal services”, such as assistance with mobility or medication management, had to move from assisted living to residential care homes. This legislation will remove that limitation.

Your body's best friend

The most potent detoxifier in your body a molecule called glutathione. Glutathione is found in all animal and plant cells and is depleted in all cases of chronic disease. In other words, if you have a chronic health condition, odds are high that you don’t have enough glutathione in your body to protect your cells and manage the toxins that you consume and produce. I am not just writing about toxic exposures from dangerous chemicals at work or from industry. Literally every reaction in your body, including breathing oxygen and drinking water, produces waste products that need to be managed by your detoxification systems and then eliminated from your body. In addition, the multitudes of bacteria that call you home and are crucial for your health also produce a wide variety of toxins that need to be managed. Every bit of food and drink you consume goes through multiple reactions that create harmful waste products. Just as an engine produces exhaust from combustion, so too does your body produce its own form of exhaust from metabolism. Detoxification isn’t something you do just when you drink less coffee or alcohol, nor is it something you just do when you go on a cleanse. Rather, detoxification is a process that is continually happening in every cell of your body every moment of every day. Glutathione is the mother of

all antioxidants and is at the heart of this entire process. Many of us are missing key genes that allow for efficient glutathione production and antioxidant recycling leaving us with too little to cope with the more than 80,000 manmade toxic compounds we are exposed to every day. There are a number of things you can do to boost glutathione in your body. Exercise, eating garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, cauliflower and cabbage) and consuming non-denatured whey protein (20 grams a day) all help build glutathione. You can also supplement with a cruciferous vegetable extract called sulforaphane. The key, rate limiting step in the manufacture of glutathione is an amino acid called L-cysteine. L-cysteine is concentrated in eggs, meats, seafoods and soybeans and eating these foods will help make more glutathione. If you have a chronic disease, you might consider using L-cysteine at a dose of 4500 mg daily under the guidance of a health care provider. This amount has been shown in multiple studies to be the key level needed for optimal glutathione manufacture. L-cysteine is a bit smelly (from the sulphur it contains) and can cause nausea and gastrointestinal upset in some people so it is best used with caution and under guidance. Boosting glutathione levels is a critical step in the prevention and treatment of virtually every health condition.

Feb. 12, 1967-March 23, 2012 A Letter from Heaven When tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not here to see. If the sun should rise and find your eyes filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, the way you did today. While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you. And each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re far apart, for every time you think of me, Im right there in your heart. Love Mom, Dad, Crystal & Brad & family, Alisha & children

Obituaries OBITUARY

Lillian Patricia Chilton December 27, 1927 – March 13, 2016 It is with great sadness and sorrow that the family of Lillian Chilton announce her passing at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook with her family at her side on Sunday, March 13, 2016. Lillian was the beloved mother of Randy (Bev), Kim (Darlene), Laurel (Steve Emann), Barbara (Daryl Warner) and loving grandmother to Colby and Courtney Emann, Jesse and Lucas Chilton and Keira and Kaitlin Warner. She also dearly loved her cat Tigger. Lillian was predeceased by her cherished companion Fred Chapman, her devoted son Randy, her parents Maggie and Fred Koshman, brothers Bill and Andy, sisters Marie and Nancy and former husband Bill Chilton. Surviving siblings are Metro, Nick, John, Sandra, Doris and Katharine as well as several nieces, nephews and relatives. Lil was a very dedicated employee in the dietary department at the St. Eugene Hospital and the Cranbrook Hospital. She was a 48 year member of the L. A. to F.O.E., a 20 year member of the Health Care Auxiliary and received a gold pin for her volunteering at Key City Theatre. In earlier years, Lil and Fred enjoyed dancing, especially square dancing. They attended many jamborees and curling bonspiels in and around the area. Lillian requested no funeral service. She would like to be remembered as the woman she was throughout her life time. We will remember her as a kind, loving, caring, intelligent, strong, determined and very spunky individual. She brought up her four children on her own and we will be forever grateful to have had the BEST MOTHER EVER. In honour of our mother Lillian and her kind thought and thoughtful ways, memorial donations can be made to the: Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, Okanagan/ Kootenays Area Office, #4, 1551 - Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, British Columbia, V1Y 9M9 or the: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Of Canada, BC/Yukon Region, Suite, #310, 1682 – West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, British Columbia, V6J 4S6. The family would like to thank Drs. Sawatsky, Aleem, Allen, Wik, and Simons, nurses Trish, Nancy, Julie, Carly, Cory, Leigh and Marianne and care-aides Patty and Nonnie. Thank you so much to everyone involved in our mom's care. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Ben was released from his 18 year battle with Huntington Disease, on March 10, 2016, in Whitehorse, Yukon. Ben lived to hug his children and family, to hunt, fish and pull practical jokes on any unsuspecting soul. To the end, his sense of humour prevailed. Ben was born in Fernie, BC then moved to the Yukon with his parents when he was one year old. He graduated from F.H. Collins, Whitehorse, Yukon in 1990 and went on about forging a life in the Yukon, BC and Alberta. Ben loved his grandparents dearly and spent many summers in Grasmere, BC with them. In later years he worked in the logging industry with his grandpa, drove truck in BC and Alberta, tried his hand at farming, mechanics and tourism but most of all he loved to spend time outdoors doing macho man things! Ben is survived by his partner Tammy & their children Wyatt and Caitlyn; mother Annette Sinclair, step-dad Pat; brother Carl (Marjie) and niece Willow; grandma Betty Sinclair, and several uncles, aunts ,cousins and friends scattered throughout the Yukon, BC, Alberta, Ontario, & the lower 48. Ben was predeceased by his father, Harold, from the same disease. Ben’s celebration of life will be held in Whitehorse in the spring. We shall post the information when we have chosen the date. Donations may be made to Centre for Huntington Disease, Room S179, 2211 Westbrook Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 2B5

The

House Rules!

Does your dining room decor date back to the dark ages? The outdated colours and accessories are no longer appealing or appetizing? Make the most of the winter months to breathe new life into this room. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to do so.

The light fixtures If your dining room doesn’t have dimmers on the light fixtures, invest in some as soon as possible — you won’t regret it. You’d like an original light fixture? Go wild! Warning: for any electrical work, call in a professional.

The walls Get out your brushes and rollers and give a boost to your gloomy looking walls. Be daring and paint them a bright colour to liven up your decor. Not sure which colour to choose? Consult a professional decorator. If your walls are damaged, look into the amazing properties of textured coatings. Besides giving a distinctive look to your walls, they conceal small imperfections. Apply them with a plastic tool, which is easier to handle than a metal one.

The furniture The fabric seats of your chairs are damaged? Buy some pretty fabric that is water- and stain resistant. Using a screwdriver, a good pair of scissors and a stapler, you’ll be able to give new life to your entire dining room set.
