Hockeyville bid fuels optimism RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

It’s a waiting game in Lumby. Voting ended Monday night and the community will now have to wait until April 2 to find out if it’s won the Kraft Hockeyville title. “I feel optimistic. I think we did awesome,” said Angie Clowry, who has been leading the troops. Lumby first made it into the top 10 and then was selected as one of two finalists with Saint-Isidore, Que., on Saturday night. Voting meant people using their computers and phones non-stop. “People right around Canada have put their lives on hold for this,” said Clowry. “There’s a strong sense of community. It’s about the relationships we’ve had as a community with others.” Lumby and Saint-Isidore, Que. have automatically won $100,000 each for arena upgrades by being in the final two, and the final voting Sunday and Monday determined who wins the Hockeyville title and an NHL pre-season game. The winner of Kraft Hockeyville will be announced April 2 and there will be a live broadcast from Lumby during Hockey Night In Canada. “We will have a tailgate party,” said Clowry. “Everyone can bring their lawn chairs and enjoy each other’s company.” Kevin Acton, Lumby’s mayor, has challenged his counterpart in Saint-Isidor a case of 24 beer to see who wins the competition. “Our local brewing company, Okanagan Spring, makes a wonderful selection of beer

your challenge for a case of beer, and with the best beer that we have with one of our local breweries in the area, Frampton Brasse,” he said. Clowry is confident that win or lose,

the Hockeyville experience will be beneficial for Lumby as there has been national exposure. “Everyone knows where Lumby is,” she said.

Police nab suspects after home invasion Morning Star Staff

Two men have been arrested following a weekend home invasion in Vernon. RCMP were called to a residence in the Bella Vista area Saturday shortly before 5 p.m. “An 83-year-old man phoned police to report that two men had entered his home and tied him to a chair,” said Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy, with the Vernon RCMP. “The men stole numerous items from the house and left in a Winnebago.” The 83-year-old homeowner managed to get himself free and called police.

The entire North Okanagan is known for its incredible generosity and ability to step up in support of various causes and groups. And now is the time to recognize those who go above and beyond to make our community such a great place. The Morning Star is looking for nominations of those who are making significant, positive contributions to our area for the inaugural Community Leader Awards. “These people are true community leaders and can be found in schools, on a sports field, in care centres, at the food bank and at many local events that take place in and around our community,” said Ian Jensen, Morning Star publisher. “Many of these wonderful people have families of their own but still find the time to make a difference by sharing their empathy, enthusiasm, inspiration and energy.”

nity partners from various local organizations, all submissions will be reviewed and a voting process will determine the top three in each category. The top honour, as well as two honourable mentions, in each category will be celebrated at a special awards night in June. They will also be featured in a special publication in The Morning Star following the awards. “The Vernon Morning Star would like to create an annual event that recognizes and honours the commitment and efforts that are essential to maintaining and supporting our growing community,” said Jensen. “By highlighting these inspirational stories, our hope is that others will be encouraged to contribute their compassion, knowledge and enthusiasm along with those around them.” Businesses or organizations interested in

District seeks treasurer RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

There’s a vacancy within Lake Country’s senior administrative ranks. The district is accepting applications for chief financial officer now that Rose Bronswyk Kassa is no longer in the role. “I can’t discuss personnel issues with anyone,” said Coun. Owen Dickie when Bronswyk Kassa asked about Bronswyk Kassa’s departure. Kassa was named chief financial officer in 2014 and was originally hired as the district’s finance manager in 2003. Mayor James Baker is also not providing any details.

“Personnel is private and confidential,” he said. “We can’t talk about it. We deal with it incamera.” Bronswyk Kassa’s departure comes as the municipality is finalizing its 2016 budget, but Dickie insists the process is moving ahead. “For all intent and purposes, we have approved the budget and we are waiting for year-end materials,” he said. “We have incredibly confident staff and everything is in hand.” In February, the district and Bronswyk Kassa were awarded the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for their 2014 annual financial report. It was the first year Lake Country had submitted for the award. The deadline to apply for CFO is March 31. Bronswyk Kassa could not be reached for comment.

Enderby gets tough on dog waste RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

Dog owners in Enderby better have a poop bag handy or face a fine. Council adopted the dog control bylaw Monday to include a $100 fine if an individual fails to remove fecal material created by their dog or doesn’t have a disposal bag. “I have been hearing absolutely positive things from people about the bylaw,” said Coun. Raquel Knust. “They hope our bylaw people will be out enforcing Raquel Knust the rules. People are thanking council for bringing the issue forward.” It was decided to target individuals without disposal bags because there has been a problem with people telling city staff that waste is not from their dog. The bylaw states, “an owner of a dog shall, when on public or private property without the express consent of a property owner, be in possession of at least one dog fecal matter disposal bag for the purpose of removing any fecal matter that their dog may deposit.” The bylaw also states that dog waste must be immediately removed from the property and dis-

posed of in a suitable refuse container. The fine will be reduced to $50 if there is early payment within 30 days and the late payment penalty is $110. Knust insists the city is not being heavy-handed with dog owners. “Most responsible dog owners are already picking up,” she said. “It’s for those people who are allowing their dogs to run free and they are not picking up after them.”

Vernon is on track

hile at last week’s Okanagan Rail Trail open house in Coldstream, it was brought to my attention that Vernon isn’t listed as a participant in the process. And if you look at any press releases or fact sheets, Kelowna, Lake Country and the Regional District of North Okanagan are named as the interjurisdictional team that purchased the corridor, but Vernon is nowhere to be found. Now the basic answer is the identified jurisdictions are the organizaRichard Rolke tions that physically cut cheques for the land deal and will own the trail. But of course, nothing is ever straight forward when Greater Vernon governance is involved. The local money to actually acquire the corridor came through the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee, but because RDNO is the parent body, it is the regional district that ultimately signed off on the deal and gets the public profile. Now as most know, GVAC consists of Vernon, Coldstream and Areas B and C. They pool together cash on water, culture and parks. Many years ago, Greater Vernon residents voted to borrow $7 million for parkland acquisitions and since then, the account has been dipped into when a property of interest comes on to the market. When Canadian National ended rail traffic, communities in the Okanagan Valley banded together to investigate retaining the 49.5-kilo-

metre track as a public asset. At the GVAC table, there was a lot of debate about the possible purchase, particularly because the corridor only goes through Coldstream and Area B, and not Vernon or Area C. But a decision was made that the project was regionally significant and part of the remaining borrowed $7 million would help with the cost. Based on how much of the corridor is within RDNO boundaries, GVAC directed $1.9 million towards the total $22 million price tag. Now as mentioned before, there is always more to Greater Vernon governance than first meets the eye. The reality is that Vernon, because of its significantly larger population base, not only has the most political representation at the table, it also has the largest cheque book. Vernon’s share of the service that funded the rail trail purchase is 68.4 per cent, so about $1.3 million of the $1.9 million is directly attributable to the city. Now, should $1.3 million guarantee the city is mentioned as a funding partner? Perhaps. But any time a property is purchased by GVAC, such as the former Camp Hurlburt or Swan Lake wetlands, it comes under the umbrella of RDNO, which GVAC legislatively can’t exist without. However, the regional district could have done more to make the public clearly aware of where the money came from, and that credit be given to elected officials in Vernon, Coldstream and the electoral areas for their vision. In the end, whether it is mentioned on a press release or not, the City of Vernon was actively at the table and that’s what counts.

What a ride it has been. First, Lumby was nominated for Kraft Hockeyville and then it made the top 10 list, kicking off mass voting by thousands of people over two days. That was followed by the news Saturday that the village had cracked the top two. And during Sunday and Monday, thousands of people once again took to their computers, casting ballots over and over again for Lumby. Earning a spot as a finalist automatically means $100,000 will go towards upgrades at Pat Duke Memorial Arena, and that will particularly benefit female hockey players who have been coping with inadequate facilities. What everyone is now waiting to learn is whether Lumby earns the Kraft Hockeyville title and a pre-season NHL game. This has truly been a team effort and everyone has rolled up their sleeves to make the campaign a success, but some individuals deserve special credit. They include Stephanie Mccluskey-Davyduke, Kim Leach, Rhonda Catt and Angie Clowry, as well as Lumby’s mayor and council and MLA Eric Foster. From Grindrod to Oyama and from Cherryville to Falkland, residents cast aside artificial borders and proved that we are all one region, one community, by putting their support behind Lumby. No matter the final result April 2, everyone in Lumby and the entire North Okanagan should be extremely proud of themselves. You successfully took on the country and demonstrated what we have always known, that the North Okanagan is a great place to call home. A job well done.

A reason to celebrate

n Feb. 26, we, along with thousands of North Okanagan residents, celebrated when we heard that our beloved Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park would not be divided and reduced by a highway and transmission line corridor. We celebrated on behalf of those insightful members of our community who, years ago, had the wisdom to work towards protecting this provincial jewel. We celebrated on behalf of our future generations, who will also be able to enjoy this rare grassland landscape and ecosystem, when so much else has disappeared under development. We celebrated on behalf of the grassland birds and wildlife that will have one less threat to their fragile existence. We thank MLA Eric Foster, Coldstream council, the RDNO board, B.C. Parks, the Ministry of A RESPONSE Regarding Not a suitable location, the enthusiasm of the Okanagan Summer Festival Society for the potential amphitheatre site at Okanagan College has proceeded from its location close to a major highway, its beauty and the slope down towards the lake. This combination of features is not found frequently. We are aware of the concerns of neighbours with respect to traffic and parking as well as noise and light pollution. We are working to mitigate these but we cannot address all concerns at once. We are not a commercial developer with teams of experts and large resources. After our open house in December, we determined that our top priority should be an acoustical engineering study which we hope will begin this summer. It is desirable to schedule onsite sound measurements during the summer so the atmospheric conditions will be comparable to those when the facility would be in use. We hope to have funds available to start in May or June. Traffic studies and parking designs will

Transportation and ICBC for the time they took to hear our concerns and provide information. Finally, we thank the thousands of citizens and many organizations who shared their passion for this precious provincial park by signing our petition, writing letters, attending meetings and meeting with elected representatives. Their involvement was critical in preventing the removal of land from the park. We look forward to continuing our collaborative work with B.C. Parks to improve the protection of and visitor experience in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park. have to come later when further funding is identified. Our architect, Bill Chomik of Kasian Architecture, has produced an inspiring initial concept which is designed to leave much of the site in its natural state. The design includes significant solar power generation capacity and we are planning to collect run-off water for irrigation of the site. Our charity has no ability to purchase other land for this purpose. We are proposing a charitable use for suitably-zoned land which has few alternate uses and which is not designated as agricultural or park land. Diane Bond, Managing Director, Okanagan Summer Festival Society SPEAK FOR ALL ANIMALS Animals and birds need to be protected from anyone who means to do them any harm. Whether it's traps, poison or any other means, it needs to be dealt with. Thank God for the new law that is protecting them. N. Smith

TRAIN TIME I've asked Vernon council if we could add a small train in Polson Park. It would add a few jobs plus I was thinking about Stanley Park in Vancouver. They have a train and it is popular. With the high real estate market there, people will be moving here. A new train in the park will make people happy and might help them make a decision to move here. We have to get people to look at things like this. Art Gourley BYPASS BLUES With regards to a bypass around Vernon, think for a minute. A bypass is exactly that and one only has to look at how Kelowna has grown without one and Penticton has stagnated since their bypass was built. I am also told by long-time residents that when a developer proposed building in the area where the bypass is proposed a few years ago, the developer's own ecological report recommended against the development as the area is

one of the few open grasslands remaining. I am also told that after viewing the plan for a bypass when it was first proposed, a retired engineer burst out laughing as he said in order to build a highway to provincial standards, rock cuts would have to be so deep that the proposal was totally a no-brainer. Also, if I recall right, one new member of city council, who originally voted to keep this long-term proposal alive, said she would be changing her mind at the next vote as it was not reasonable to tie up development of land along the proposed route and in fact, it may make the city liable if it does so. Finally, given the extremely poor state of the roads and sewer system and the cost of such a basic as water in Vernon, it would be political suicide to even seriously consider such frivolous projects when the basics need attending to. As just one example, I went over a pothole on the upper part of Alexis Park Drive, which came within a hair of removing all of the enamel off my teeth. And you want to spend taxpayers money on bypassing the city?

Really? Give your head a shake. Brian Sutch

Vernon’s Caetani family is subject of new art project Sveva Caetani’s fascinating story has reached the ears of international artist Rebecca Key Morning Star Staff

The story of Vernon’s aristocratic Italian family has been heard all around town. But it has also received some international attention as of late. British artist Rebecca Key is in Vernon to conduct an art installation based on the enigmatic and mysterious Caetani family. She is staying at the Caetani house on Pleasant Valley Road, now run as a cultural centre with artist studios and residences, which was once the home to the Prince of Teano and Duke of Sermoneta, Leone Caetani. He moved to Vernon with his mistress Ofelia Fabiani and their artistically inclined daughter, Sveva, from their native Italy in 1921. Key is here to conduct research at both the Caetani house and at the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives, which has both materials and objects once belonging to the Caetanis. Key’s area of concentration is the time period following the death of Leone in 1934 to the death of Ofelia in 1960. “As many local residents are aware, this was the period of time that the young Sveva was kept a virtual prisoner in her own home for approximately 25 years, not allowed out

Key talks about her plans for an art installation on the family, and specifically the artist Sveva Caetani, at the museum Thursday. of her house for the first three years, and restricted to the grounds and short excursions into town for the remainder,” said Caetani Cultural Centre executive director Susan Brandoli. “Sveva was encouraged to read, but vehemently denied the freedom to write, draw or paint. “Following her mother’s death, she was to emerge into the community, eventually able to obtain her teaching certificate from

the University of Victoria, and returned to the North Okanagan to become a respected teacher, mentor, artist and writer for many years before her own death in 1994.” Key’s investigation focuses on this 25-year period of Sveva’s life, using archival objects and new visual metaphors to illustrate the relationship between mother and daughter, and the dynamic similitude of love and control, isolation and suffocation.

The installation will also include Key’s own photographs taken in response to her research on the Caetani family. “I am pleased to be able to stay in the house where she (Sveva) and her mother (Ofelia) spent the many years following the death of her father,” said Key. “This will be a great piece of work to engage dialogue with all ranges of people, to talk about the life of such a unique and generous woman.” Key, who has exhibited internationally and also worked as an art director in the film and television industry, uses objects to examine the relationship between artist and gallery space and also uses props to explore myths that surround the creative process within the institution and other specific sites. “Once we’re familiar with a place, we almost always tune it out. Key jolts us awake by making the familiar strange. For a moment, at least, we’re aware of what surrounds us,” reads a review by The Washington Post about Key’s previous work: Key is currently studying a practice-based PhD at the Art & Design Research Institute at Middlesex University, London, which is financially supported by the BBC Grace Wyndham Goldie Trust and The Snowdon Trust. Her residency in Vernon is funded by Arts Council England. The public is invited to attend a reception and conversation with Key on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Vernon museum. She will give a short introduction on her work and will answer questions about the installation, her research and the Caetani family, along with Brandoli. For more information, visit caetani.ca.

Duo is on a first-name basis with its audience

T

he North Okanagan Community Concert audience was treated to an evening of unadulterated excellence by the Wolak Donnelly Duo Sunday. The two musical showmen had us eating from their hands, from Kornel Wolak’s first explosion on to the stage, with his clarinet slithering through the opening notes of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and, soon Christine Pilgrim afterwards, Chris Donnelly’s discreet walk to the piano to join him, precisely on cue. After they’d bent and moulded the dots to their own unique style and even gleaned applause before the end of Gershwin’s masterpiece, they played a medley from his Porgy and Bess. We could feel the lazy haze during their rendition of Summertime, and when Wolak played I Loves You Porgy and Bess, You Is My Woman Now with the profound passion demanded of true, lasting love, Donnelly’s accompaniment matched it sublimely. Wolak admitted, “We played it lovely.” He went on to announce that the duo

had covered their gamut of interpretations, and, as a result, the concert was over. He topped our laughter by saying, “But we’ll play the rest of the program to fulfill our contractual obligations.” The rest of their program did much more than that. We were on first name terms in no time and primed for more laughs. Chris played his composition about his nightmarish gig at the Edmonton club of a bankrupt called Henry. Kornel told of their Kaslo billet the previous night, when he’d asked their host how many cats he’d lost to coyotes, the casual reply was, “We get through two a year.” Meanwhile, both plucked at dog hairs left by the host’s huge retrievers. There were also serious moments of great beauty. For instance, when the two paid homage to Mozart with the Adagio from his Clarinet Concerto in A Major the audience sat, hushed, and finally breathed a collective sigh before letting rip with applause. And they watched in awe when Kornel played the entire Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, adapted for clarinet, without taking a breath. We learned about, and practised his circular breathing technique during the duo’s question and answer session

in the second half of the program. But not before we’d been treated to a second contribution by Bach; this time, the Allegro from his Violin Sonata No. 3, played brilliantly on clarinet by Kornel and accompanied spectacularly, on spoons, by Chris. First, they playfully tuned the spoons to the clarinet to enhance this unique experience. We’d already tasted Chris’ percussive expertise, as well as his clowning ability, when he’d augmented his left hand on piano with maracas in his right, to accompany Kornel’s race through Zequinha de Abreu’s Tico-Tico no Fubá (Swallow in the Corn Meal) made famous by Carmen Miranda in the 1947 movie Copacabana. When the pace grew to fever pitch, Chris threw the maracas over his shoulder and used both hands on the keyboard. He too had his hour of glory, when he played Hymn to Freedom written by Oscar Peterson to support the Civil Rights movement in 1962. Wolak and Donnelly topped the evening with their interpretation of Rossini’s Introduction, Theme and Variations. It earned them a spontaneous standing ovation and us the encore: Flight of the Bumblebee. An all-round entertaining evening opened graciously with music by classical guitarist Brent Matterson.

Tax News

from Dean Chapple at H&R Block Moving expenses can be a big tax deduction. To qualify you must move at least 40kms closer to your new job or 40 kms closer to a new work location with an existing company. Your move must be considered to be a permanent move - not just a job that is a short contract and then you plan to return home. If your move qualifies here are some of the expenses you can claim: Moving van costs, travel & meal costs for yourself and family, cost of selling your home i.e. legal fees and real estate commission among others. You must have all receipts for hotels, moving vans and house sale etc. Receipts for meals and travel are not necessary as CRA provide a simplified calculation for this purpose. Most important is a letter from you employer stating that whether or not you were reimbursed for your move – if “yes” then the $ amount must be stated and also the date you started work. Moving expenses can also be allowed for self-employed people. Moving expenses can only be deducted against income earned in the new work location, but can be carried forward to be applied to a future year if they cannot all be used in 2015. Come in and see our tax specialists and they can advise you on this and other deductions.

Tesla talk is set to electrify Morning Star Staff

Vernon’s very own electronics expert, machinist, welder, steam engineer, and restorer of antiques, Garry Garbutt, will share his fascination for the “genius” Nikola Tesla during his presentation, “Nikola Tesla: The Man That Designed The World Power System,” April 9 at the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives. Born in 1856, Tesla is best known for his design of the alternating current (AC) that flows through the modern electrical system. “Not only will Garbutt speak about Tesla, the man, but also about his work as an inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer and futurist,” said Denise Marsh, marketing and communications coordinator for the museum. “Audience members will be treated to a Tesla coil demonstration by Garbutt. “Associated equipment, such as a ray gun, as well as Tesla patents, Nikola’s Colorado Spring notes and the book

Spring is blooming

ith the first day of spring came the opening of my first daffodil. The tulips have been blooming almost two weeks now. Looks like the very cold nights are gone and it is time to start planting and transplanting. Somehow one of the snapdragons against the house never saw winter going by. It has rewarded me with an early bud. The plant looks like it is in the middle of June. The rain barrels are already filled up and I didn’t have to Jocelyne Sewell use one drop of the tap water for all my plants in the house from the time they came in until now. The snow is gone and the soil is dry enough in most locations to work it. I was able to rototill a space already and it didn’t stick to the tines even with some clay. The sod had been turned over last fall and

A GArdener’s diAry

bags of grass clippings and some shredded leaves left on top over the winter months. This new spot is ready to plant now. There are some cool weather crops that can be planted in the spring, just as soon as it is warms enough to work the ground. These crops include arugula, beets, carrots, mache, mustard, onions from sets, parsnips, peas, potatoes, radishes, salsify, spinach and turnips. You can start inside: broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, eggplant, endive, leek, lettuce, pepper, and tomato seeds. As soon as they have germinated and show their heads, they can be moved under fluorescent lights or south facing windows and moved outside for short periods when weather permits. I have pre-germinated peas and broad beans and they are growing in the greenhouse ready to transplant in another week or so. Same thing with spinach, kale and lettuce. I have to wait until they are tall enough so the quail won’t feast on them. This is one of the reasons I transplant everything. Sometimes I also use the black trays to cover the new area that has been planted, such as carrots and parsnips.

I tried to transplant these before, but they start to look like octopuses with their many arms and legs. These are the trays you carry plants in and they have enough opened space at the bottom to let the rain and sun go through. Turned upside down, they give height for the plants to grow and be protected from the birds. If you have the space, it sure pays to have a cold frame. We are eating lettuce that spent the winter in there. The other two cold frames, where I had potted perennials, will be emptied this week and I will be putting cold tolerant plants in them. I am cutting my geraniums this week and will be putting them in the greenhouse or outside during the day but they have to come back in for the nights. Canna lilies can also be started. Mine came up in February because it was too warm in the basement for them. Even the dahlia tubers have started to grow. Some of them I will pot up for an early start. More seeds are available at S.E.N.S. Seed/Plant Swap/Sale and annual general meeting Thursday at the Schubert Centre at 6:30 p.m.

Security will continue to roam Coldstream beaches and parks this summer. As provided for the past several years, bylaw enforcement and security services will continue with the Commissionaires. “There is a significant amount of value added benefit in that the commissionaires have marked cars, their officers are in uniform and we have a good relationship with them already for the services they have provided in previous years,” said Trevor Seibel, Coldstream’s chief administrative officer, in a report to council. “Commissionaires will also have the ability to provide bylaw enforcement (not only parks, but zoning, noise, unsightly premises, etc…) while they are performing their duties or on an as needed basis.” The cost for the Commissionaires is $47,463 for April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017. Key services include the Kalavista area between May and September, closing the cemetery year-round, closing the Kalavista boat launch, parking lot and Lavington washrooms between April and the end of October, closing parks and beaches, random patrols of parks and an additional 120 hours of enforcement to be used throughout the year as needed.

LINDENWOOD LIONS HOCKEY PHOTOS

Riley Spraggs was the second-leading scorer with 16 goals and 23 points in 26 games for the Lindenwod Lions near St. Louis. Michael Hails MVP of the ACHA national championship tournament. Hails went 8-4 with a 2.58 goals against average and a .901 save percentage. The Lions shaded the Iowa State Cyclones 2-1 in a thrilling national final.

Spraggs, Hails lift ACHA Lions ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

Even when they fell behind 1-0 in the national championship final, Riley Spraggs was confident he and fellow Coldstream hockey product Michael Hails would finish the night as champions. He was right. Spraggs, a senior playing his final college hockey game, and Hails, a sophomore, helped the Lindenwood (Mo.) Lions win the 2016 American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) men’s Div. 1 national championship at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Ill., just outside of Chicago, with a 2-1 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones. “It’s still pretty surreal and hasn’t sunk in yet but it’s still one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,” said Spraggs, 24, who won a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League championship with the Revelstoke Grizzlies. “Winning in Revelstoke, it wasn’t my last year. This was my last year of college hockey. It was win or I’m done. I don’t get another shot at winning a college championship. “It’s a pretty amazing experience to have my last college hockey game be a victory for a national championship. It’s, by far, the highlight of my hockey career.” The Lions, who lost in the quarterfinals of the 2015 national championship tournament, tied the championship game in the last minute of the second period on a goal from

senior and leading scorer Stephen Bopp of Kirkwood, Mo. The Lions got the winner from sophomore Mike Lozano of Lockport, Ill. at 6:47 of the third. “Iowa State is a very defensive team who won a lot of their games by playing very defensive and waiting on turnovers,” said Spraggs, the team’s second leading scorer with 16 goals and 23 points in 26 games, who graduates from Lindenwood in May with a degree in exercise science and a minor in strength and conditioning. “It was a very tough game, very close. Even when we were down 1-0, nobody was down on the team. We knew we were going to win and go home with a title.” Still, the Lions had to endure what Spraggs called “the longest five minutes of his life.” With five minutes to go and nursing the 2-1 lead, the Lions turned things over to Hails, who stopped 22 of 23 shots in the title game to be named first star. He was also MVP of the national championship tournament. That included a late penalty against the Lions. Iowa State pulled their goalie for a six-on-four but could not beat Hails. In the national semifinal against the Davenport (Mi.) Panthers, Hails made an unbelievable block save with a second left in regulation time to preserve a 2-1 Lions victory. “I had a flashback to when I was trying out for Team Pacific in 100 Mile House where I made an identical save with the same amount of time left,” said Hails, 22, working

toward a degree in sports management and marketing. “I always had it in my mind that the puck wasn’t going to go in. I knew I had the time on my side so I only had to hit the puck once and not worry about the rebound. I just wanted to make myself as large as possible and spread out. I kinda got lucky, I’m not going to lie.” Hails appeared in 12 games in the 2015-16 season, going 8-4 with a GAA of 2.58 and a .901 save percentage. Coach Rick Zombo tagged Hails to be the Lions’ starter in the post-season and he rewarded his coach’s confidence with some of his best hockey of the year. “It was an amazing experience,” said Hails of the Lions’ run to the national title. “I’ve been swamped with tests. The teachers congratulate you for winning a national title but you still have to make up for the week you’ve missed so it hasn’t sunk in and I haven’t had the time to think about it. “But every morning for the rest of my life, I’ll wake up as a champion.” Hails – whose parents Dave and Lynn watched the game via live streaming at home, with tears running down their face as time expired – said winning a national championship will help him with life still to come. “I can tackle any task or obstacle that gets in my way, like school, with mid-terms, or job applications further on,” he said. “I have the confidence now that I can do any of that.”

Hill locks up Spanish silver

Morning Star Staff

Vernon’s Kevin Hill has been sporting a frown for most of the 2016 FIS Snowboard World Cup season. That frown is now turned upside down. The 29-year-old Olympian raced to the best World Cup result of his career in the final snowboard cross event of the season Sunday in sundrenched Baqueira Beret, Spain. Hill struck silver behind Australian Alex Pullin, while Spain’s Lucas Eguibar rounded out the podium in the Big Final with bronze. Brockhoff and Pullin secured a double win for Australia. Hill’s previous best finish in the circuit was third, which he managed twice last season and once in 2013. Last season, he also picked up a gold medal at the 2015 Winter X Games. “It was great to finish this season with my best World Cup finish in one of the toughest finals I’ve seen all season,” Hill told The Morning Star. “I really needed to get on the podium before the season finished. I was getting pretty down with my results this season. I had been taken out in four races, crashed myself and slipped out of the gate once. So out of nine races this year, I’ve really only raced three decent ones so this really tops it off.”

Hill, who carries major sponsorship from Silver Star Mountain Resort, Rancho Vignola and Oakley. won US$6,100. “I felt really strong this season but didn’t have the best of luck, so winning my semifinal against the World Cup overall winner and beating him in the finals was a really good feeling. Along with Lucas who won the race two weeks ago in Switzerland.” Said race champion Pullin: “I loved the course that they built here. It’s been a great race. Everyone did a fantastic job, and I think we really saw that in the final of the last four guys. It’s been a great finish of the season to win here in Spain. I’m already looking forward to the next year.” Men’s title winner Pierre Vaultier (France), who had secured his fourth career Crystal Globe, already ahead of the World Cup tour’s finale, placed fourth. “I didn’t have to fight for the Globe anymore but you want to fight for the victory,” said Vaultier. “So, it wasn’t the final I was going for. I came here to win not to be fourth. But it feels good to officially have the title under my belt.” Italy’s Michela Moioli brought home a tiny lead of 40 points to claim her first career World Cup title after a total of eight races this season.

Liam Blackburn scored midway through the third period, breaking a 1-1 deadlock, as the West Kelowna Warriors edged the Penticton Vees 2-1 in B.C. Hockey League playoff action Monday night at Royal LePage Place. Penticton led the best-of-seven Interior final series 2-1, with Game Four back in West Kelowna Tuesday night. Nic Jones scored for the Vees on the powerplay midway through the first and Zach Driscoll suffered his first loss of the playoffs, stopping 21 of 23 shots. Jonathan Desbiens scored the Warriors first goal. Matt Greenfield took home second star honours after making 23 saves. Tied 1-1 in the third, Blackburn found a rebound off the pad of Driscoll and poked the loose puck underneath the sprawled goaltender at 8:19. Driscoll stopped the blast from the blueline but couldn’t do much about the rebound that Blackburn jammed in from the inside the crease. Penticton did pressure late, trying to generate an equalizer but unlike Saturday there weren’t any late game heroics on Monday. Penticton even had a late power-play that turned into a six-on-four advantage after they pulled the goalie but West Kelowna held them at bay. Both Dante Fabbro and Tyson Jost ripped onetimers off each post during the same shift on a Vees’ two-man advantage. Later, Jones had a great rush down the middle but it ended with his shot clanking off the crossbar and out of play. Scott Conway scored six-minutes into overtime as Penticton came from behind to beat West Kelowna 3-2, in Game 2, Saturday night. Conway also scored the game-tying goal with 58 seconds left in regulation to force OT. Demico Hannoun scored the other goal in regulation for the Vees and Driscoll stopped 23 shots. Conway, who scored four overtime goals in the regular season, banked in the game-winner off a defenceman’s skate from below the goal-line, and through Greenfield’s legs at 5:57 of OT. The Chilliwack Chiefs were leading the Wenatchee Wild 2-1 heading to Game 4 Tuesday, while the Nanaimo Clippers were leading the Powell River Kings 3-0 going to a fourth tilt.

For Spraggs, whose dad, Robert, took in the championship game live in Bensenville, four years as a collegiate student-athlete flew by. “You come in as a freshman and you think you’ve got four whole years here,” he said. “School makes it go by fast. You go week-to-week doing your homework and living for the weekend, when the games are played. “Before you know it, you’re a senior playing your last game. There’s nothing to prepare you for how quick it is. And winning a national title makes it worth it.” Said Zombo of the North Okanagan pair: “They are quality individuals. Riley didn’t have the point production in the tournament he had in the regular season, but I made sure his line was on against the other team’s top line. And Michael was fantastic. He was just solid, his confidence was high and there was no flappability in him. Easy pick for MVP.” Spraggs is hoping for an internship with the NHL’s St. Louis Blues this summer, and also hopes to continue playing either in the East Coast Hockey League or Southern Professional Hockey League. Hails will return home for the summer before returning to Lindenwood in the fall for his junior year.

The VSS Panthers had five basketball teams take North Zone championship banners this season, represented by the likes of, from left, Nash Cullum, Callie Bertram, Jordyn Cullum, Trent Charlton and Kelsey Falk.

Hoops hot at VSS Program soars under dedicated coaches KEVIN MITCHELL Sports Editor

VSS doesn’t wait around for March Madness to get stoked about basketball. Rarely will you see the Panther Pit not full of students smiling – some not on sports teams – as they ring up threes and flush foul shots during lunch or 10-minute breaks. Here are rather staggering fun facts on the powerful Panther program this season: n All five teams went undefeated in North Okanagan league action as well as playoffs. Four of five teams won their North Zone final game by 30-plus points with the junior boys winning a closer one against the Fulton Maroons. n The Grade 8 boys lost one game all year (to St Georges Saints of Vancouver). Highlights were beating MEI (Eagles of Abbotsford) and Semiahmoo (Ravens of White Rock). They won three tournaments out of four entered and closest league game was 30+ point win. n The senior girls participated in provincials for the 12th straight year and ended up sixth at the Sweet 16 in Langley. Coaches Lonny Mazurak and Dave Tetreault have taken them to 10 zone championships, four valley banners, five final-four provincial showings and finished seventh or better in 11 of 12 years in B.C. playdowns. n The Grade 8 girls played a tough exhibition schedule to get them prepared for provincials. Total record was 10-9. Closest league game was 30-point plus win. Baby Cats have gone to provincials five of last seven years. n Highlights for the junior girls was defeating seventh-ranked Yale Lions of Abbotsford and winning all their league games by 30-plus points. “We are very fortunate to have a dedicated and stable coaching staff at VSS with two coaches at all levels,” said longtime athletic director Sean Smith,

who guided the Grade 8 Panthers this season alongside his wife, Kulwinder. Asked if he’s witnessed five teams in one season reach and win the North Zone playoffs, Smith, who coaches Panther football in the fall, said: “It hasn’t happened in my experience, but it’s the result of a lot of coaches putting in a lot of time from when the kids were young. “We’re fortunate to have had coaches that have been in place and stable. That’s what you need to build programs. Lonny Mazurak and Dave Tetreault have built up the senior girls program and Warren Cullum is a great basketball mind coaching the juniors and Howie Falk knows his stuff with the Grade 8 girls. “They are helping Glenn Garvie, whose senior boys have won two straight valley senior boys titles, with skill developing. “Our coaches not only work hard during the season, but also provide a lot of off-season opportunities for our athletes to get better. Our players have bought in and we are seeing the results. If we open the gym, they’re here. Whether it’s summertime or seven in the morning. Warren runs his practices 6:30 in the morning twice a week and the kids are here.” Garvie only loses Grade 12s Seth Blundell, Jakob Marshall and Nathan Bain. “The VSS program has advanced to the point that there is genuine disappointment if we do not go to the provincial; that is the goal, not just to win a few games.” The Cullum basketball wing of the school is often hectic with coach Warren, superstar Jordyn of the senior girls and Nash Cullum of the junior boys honing their skills and talking the game. Asked about any one-on-one comps with his sister, Nash deadpanned: “She doesn’t want to play one-on-one; she’s scared.”

Moderately Confused

Bridge by Phillip Alder BELIEVE THE CARDS OF YOUR OPPONENTS John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, a Scottish novelist, historian and politician who served as Governor General of Canada, said, “Every man at the bottom of his heart believes that he is a born detective.” A bridge player needs to be a detective. There are clues littered around every deal, just waiting to be interpreted correctly. In today’s deal, first there is a bidding question. North opens one club, East overcalls one heart, South responds one spade, and North raises to two spades. What should South do now? Then we don our deerstalker and decide what South should do in

four spades. West leads the heart jack. East wins with his king, cashes the heart ace, and continues with the heart five. When South ruffs up with the spade six, West discards a diamond. How should South continue? If responder bids one of a major and is raised by opener to two of that major, responder passes with nine losers, insists on game with seven losers, and makes a game-try with eight losers. So, here, South, over two spades, continues with three clubs. Then North should jump to four spades because he has good clubs, two aces and four-card spade support. South, who must hold his pointed-suit losers to one, would usually take the spade finesse. However, if West had that king, surely

he would have overruffed at trick three. South should lead his spade queen, then put up dummy’s ace. Here, the king drops, and declarer can claim. But if the king does not appear, South plays another trump and hopes clubs are 3-3 or East can be squeezed if he has four clubs and the diamond king.

Dry weather could spark fire conditions Morning Star Staff

The Nor t h Okanagan may experience an early drying

interface wildfire risk, but there is a safe way to conduct backyard burning.

Homeowners and industry personnel are encouraged to visit the B.C. Wildfire Service

website at www.bcwildfire.ca/Prevention and consult the newly updated FireSmart

Homeowner’s Manual,” said Max Birkner, fire information officer. The following steps can also be taken. Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control the fire and prevent it from escaping. Do not burn during windy conditions. Weather conditions can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires. Create a fire guard at least one metre around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material. If you are planning a large burn, consider conducting smaller burns around the perimeter beforehand to create a fuel break and help stop the fire from spreading beyond its intended size. Each of these fires should be kept small and must be completely extinguished before starting a new fire. Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure that your fire is completely extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before you leave the area for any length of time. Pay attention to changing weather conditions and follow all burning regulations to help reduce the number of preventable wildfires. Before conducting any burn, check with your local fire department, municipality and regional district to see if there are any open burning restrictions or bylaws in effect. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.

T

his attractive home features two bedrooms plus a den that could be used as a third bedroom, as well as a bonus room over the garage that would make an ideal studio, play area or entertainment centre. The front door is sheltered and opens into a foyer with a coat closet to the left. The den, to the right, overlooks the covered porch. Directly ahead are the open-plan kitchen, dining area and spacious great room. The great room opens on to a covered patio that looks out to the back garden. A coffered ceiling adds elegance, and the gas fireplace will be a magnet for family activities in cooler weather. The dining area is separated from the kitchen and great room by a threeseat eating bar and work island with a double sink. A doorway leads to the covered patio, and both dining area and kitchen will enjoy plenty of natural light through a large window.

The kitchen is designed for efficiency, with a corner pantry and generous counter space flanking the stove. The master bedroom, at the back of the home for privacy, includes an ensuite with a soaker tub for a touch of luxury. Double basins and a glassed-in shower stall complete the layout. The walk-in closet will provide plenty of room for clothing and accessories. The second bedroom looks out to the side garden and shares a three-piece bathroom located across the corridor, next to the linen closet. The laundry room, with its own sink, is separated from the second bedroom by a stairway to the bonus room over the triple garage. This room can double as a mud room, with a bench and cubbies, as well as access to the garage. The stairway to the bonus room can be relocated, to make the second bedroom larger.
