THE 20-YEAR SAGA OF A FOULED CREEK ‘Muted’ official response to complaints of waterway’s stench Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

While there is a plan in place to stop manure runoff and discarded milk from a McMillan dairy farm from fouling a local creek, residents are questioning why it took 20 years to find a solution. Last September, The News reported that a pair of McMillan Court residents were fed up with a small creek that smelled “like an outhouse”

for much of that summer. Karen Copeland and Sherri Godfrey said the small creek had been a source of rotten smells dating back more than a decade. The small watercourse is known as Gill Creek and collects water from local storm drains along McMillan Road and runs west into Lonzo Creek Park. Copeland and Godfrey said the stream had periodically turned a white colour for years. When her sister visited last August, Copeland said “there were times where we couldn’t stand

to be outside on my back deck because the smell was so bad.” Officials have since traced the source of the odour to a dairy farm about one kilometre north of Gill Creek, on McMillan Road. The family of the farm’s current owner, Kathy Cooper, has lived and worked on the property for 90 years. As development has overtaken the area, drainage patterns have changed, but the dairy operation has remained. A barn on the property sits just feet from a steep retaining wall built Continued on A4

Multiple complaints over two decades dumping milk down a drain behind her barn, thinking the milk went into the sewer system and the James Wastewater Treatment Plant, rather than into the storm culverts. On Sept. 30, a “whole tank of milk” had been dumped, causing Gill Creek to again turn white. Told the milk runs into the stream, Cooper pledged to stop the practice. According to the emails, Cooper told the officials the “timing isn’t right” to work on an Environmental Farm Plan, as suggested. Neither was she “overly interested in discussing infrastructure upgrades,” although an independent environment consultant had become involved. Officials deemed the problem to be “primarily an environmental issue,” and forwarded it to the ministry of environment. By November, though, the city was “looking to disconnect the owner’s connection to the storm system” and asking the farm owner to look at “on-site solutions.” The emails obtained by The News end in October. But since then, City of Abbotsford spokesperson Katherine Treloar told The News that the farm owner has now pledged to undertake work

decades ago by the District of Matsqui, with McMillan Road below. Emails obtained from the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture by The News through a Freedom of Information request show issues from runoff at the farm was first noted two decades ago. The Ministry of Environment said in a statement that it had been aware of the farm’s “waste management practices since 1996,” and that its “compliance approach in this situation has been to work with the farm operator, the dairy association and local and provincial government agencies to improve the onsite waste management practices and see the operation in compliance with the Agricultural Waste Control Regulation.” However, the emails suggest that even after two decades working with the farm, the environment ministry had to be prodded to respond to last summer’s issues. And they show plans to address the issue accelerated only after The News published an article on the problem on Sept. 16, 2015. Cooper told The News that she was only notified last fall that a drain at the back of the property led to a storm-runoff culvert, rather than a sewage treatment facility. In September 2010, the city sent Cooper a letter about concerns about runoff. After a second complaint was received just four months later, in January 2011, the city issued two tickets under its Waterways Protection Bylaw and contacted the Ministry of Environment. The problems continued, though, and the City of Abbotsford contacted the Environment Ministry after receiving complaints in January 2012 and April 2013. The fines issued in 2011 were also never paid. Last August, another complaint was received and an official report was submitted. Four more complaints were recorded over the next three months, according to a report compiled by the city’s environmental co-ordinator, Pauline Favero. Copeland, meanwhile, began to tweet pictures of her sludgy and smelly local creek. On Sept. 17, a day after The News first wrote about the issue, Orlando Schmidt, the ministry’s regional manager, referenced the article in an email and noted the ministries of agriculture and environment had been dealing with the farm for 20 years about “discharge events.” Schmidt noted the city was looking to arResident Karen Copeland publicized problems with a local creek that omitted a foul odour range an inter-agency meeting “to strategize Submitted photo and periodically turned a milky colour. so that the issue can be resolved once for all, rather than continue to reoccur.” When a colleague, who had the farm on her list of places to visit, queried Schmidt how to proceed, given the newly sched- in the spring to control surface runoff from entering the city’s uled meeting, Schmidt replied: “there were a few developments storm sewer system and finding its way to the creek. A ministry of agriculture staffer noted that the farm “likely disappointing it took this many years,” she said. In its statement to The News last week, the ministry said: needs manure storage,” and did not seem to have “anything other than a solids pile in the field … and some pad storage.” The “Manure management does however continue to be a challenge official continued: “I have never seen any liquid manure manage- for this operator. April 13 event will light up the Games Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

It’s almost officially time to light up the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games. The torchlighting ceremony for the event occurs April 13, marking 100 days until the beginning of the Games in Abbotsford. “The torchlighting ceremony is really a rallying cry for the community,” said Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games president Steve Carlton. “We’re going to light the ceremonial torch at city hall and it’s a chance for all the team to come together with

the public and bring awareness to the Games for the community.” The ceremony kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, with the torchlighting taking place at 8:30 p.m. at Thunderbird Square. The public is invited to attend both events. But due to limited indoor seating, officials are recommending locals contact the Games office for seating availability inside the auditorium. Speeches and local entertainment will occur at both events. Once the flame is lit outside Thunderbird Square, it will

remain illuminated until the conclusion of the Games in July. Carlton said volunteer numbers for the Games are encouraging, but more are needed. “We’re very pleased with the progress of our recruitment for volunteers,” he said. “We’ve received a really good response from the community, and already over 20 per cent of the volunteers have been assigned to a role. Typically, that doesn’t happen till much later. We’re now making the push for the next 2,000 volunteers.” The Games run July 21 to 24 in various locations across Abbotsford. For more information on the event, visit bcgames.org.

Construction starting on housing project A groundbreaking ceremony Thursday to mark the start of construction on a new 30-unit supportive housing project on Gladys Avenue came with more good news for advocates for the homeless, as the province announced it will provide funding to keep the 40-bed temporary shelter on Riverside Road open until next spring. Dozens gathered at the Gladys site to celebrate the start of construction on the project, which is anticipated to open next spring and will include 30 low-barrier units for men who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The building will be operated by Abbotsford Community Services (ACS), which will work with Fraser Health and other

service providers, to provide assistance to residents. “We have been waiting a long time for this day to happen,” said ACS executive director Rod Santiago. A previous proposal by the organization had been denied by a tie vote in council in early 2014 before the present project was approved later that year. “It’s been a tough slog but for it to actually happen is thrilling.” The provincial government is providing $5.1 million of funding for the project, while the city provided the land and $250,000. The province also committed to funding the Riverside shelter until next spring. The facility had originally been slated to close in the spring.

Abortion debate You call this intelligent discussion? Should a free society not have room for people with opposing points of view without the vilification? Harold Ludwig This isn’t an opposing point of view, this is trying to guilt women in to unwanted pregnancies. There’s a huge difference. Sam Crossley It probably makes everyone who has been put in the situation to have an abortion feel horrible about themselves. Courtt Fraser I am pro-choice, but I will defend the free speech of pro-lifers. Limiting free speech puts us down a very dark path. Mark Switzer

Regulate, don’t close, pot dispensaries Rather than trying to close medical marijuana dispensaries, the city, or any other municipality, should first do some proper research as to the benefits of the cannabis plant rather than the typical authoritarian approach of it’s a drug and drugs are bad as opposed to it’s an herb and therefore beneficial. What the city could consider is regulation inasmuch as, knowing exactly what the THC/cannabinoid ratio is as this is important to know. The THC is largely for

from healthy people or a plant that can heal and will grow in abundance. Responsible research dating back to the 1800’s will confirm this. Make the medical pot producers pay for a scientific analysis of each strain they sell and demand regular quality control reports from trusted labs. This is what happens in Colorado. The hemp oil known as “Charlotte’s Web,” which reduced the child Charlotte’s epileptic seizures from 300 per day to just a few, has a ratio of one part THC to 28 parts cannabinoid. Taxpayers carry massive government debt We live in a politically correct world where we accept that politicians will not keep their promises. Massive government debt is the result and every British Columbian owes $30,512 for federal and provincial debt. Recently, Canadians were informed that the annual payment taxpayers make to finance government debt is

$50B. A new report reminds us of another aspect of how badly they fail Canadians who do not work for government. Public sector employees at the federal level earned 17 per cent more than comparable workers in the private sector and, if benefits are included, cost 42 per cent more. At the provincial level the advantage is

eight per cent and 25 per cent respectively, while at the municipal level the advantage is 11 per cent and 36 per cent respectively. The U.S. is even more ridiculous with CNN reporting 78 per cent higher costs. No wonder Americans are yelling, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!” According to the re-

cent report, if government workers were paid at the same rate as their private sector counterparts, Canadian taxpayers would save up to $20B a year. The annual cost to an average taxpayer for paying interest on the debt and funding these additional costs beyond the private sector is $3,220. Responsible govern-

ment would now have $70B annually to spend on infrastructure or the average Canadian would have $3,220 more dollars to save or spend. Our government’s careless management has produced a public workforce where jobfor-life is an expectation and where costs for salary and benefits exceed reasonableness. Jim Dueck

Easter Eggs in the Kitchen A tradition in my family has always been the customary ritual of decorating eggs for Easter. As far back as history can take us, the egg seems to have always been a symbol of continuing life and resurrection. Therefore, it was natural to decorate them and give out as gifts for part of the feasting after the solemn fast of Lent. Although it is now more contemporary to exchange chocolate or candy eggs, many families still carry out the historic practice of using real eggs. However, what is to become of all the excess hard-boiled eggs other than the habitual egg sandwich?

than two-toned slices of egg.

Allow me to give you a few examples that will hopefully inspire some culinary creativity in your kitchen.

My favourite hard-boiled egg recipe is Scotch Eggs. This Scottish recipe is prepared by encasing hard-boiled eggs with sausage meat. They are then rolled in a mixture of cracker crumbs and fresh chopped parsley, and baked in the oven. Once cooled, they are sliced into quarters for a sensational presentation.

Dear Janet: Firstly, when selecting eggs to boil, one wants to make sure they are choosing older eggs rather than the freshest ones. This is because over a period of time more air develops between the shell and the shell membrane, and thus making it easier to peel. Also try rolling the cooked egg on the counter with some gentle pressure to makes cracks all over the surface, and then peel under cool running water. The “green ring” indicates a chemical reaction between the iron in the yolk and the sulfur in the white. This happens when the egg is either cooked too long, or at too high of a temperature. Try adjusting your cooking time and plunge them into an ice water bath immediately to stop the cooking process.

Hopefully all of this egg inspiration will keep your mind from questioning, “what was cooked first — chicken or the egg?”

E-mail chef dez at dez@chefdez.com or write to P.O. Box 2674, Abbotsford, BC, V2T 6R4.

Egg slices are better used along with spinach and cheese rolled inside the middle of a pork loin for a stuffed roast that is extraordinary. Egg slices can also be layered in many different casseroles. If one were to search the internet or visit the local library, they would discover a variety of hard-boiled egg recipes. They will include a number of egg & cheese dips, pickled eggs, and many versions of deviled eggs. For example, try combining the yolk mixture for deviled eggs with smoked salmon before stuffing back into the egg white halves for a delicious change.

Dear Chef Dez: I hate making hard-boiled eggs. I find it difficult to peel them without having

huge chunks of the cooked white staying attached to the shell pieces. Also, they always have that “green ring” around the yolk. Are there any tricks to help me? Janet C., Maple Ridge, BC

A quick and simple idea would be to crumble them to garnish salads. This would not only add bright colours to the salad, but is also is a fantastic way to add additional protein. Crumbled eggs are also vivid garnishes for stir-frys or around the outer edge of a platter of rice. Add a splash of freshly chopped parsley over the rice, and you will have transformed the bland grains into something more attractive. The crumbled mix of white and yellow is much more eye appealing

Inquest into Humble beginning, bright future inmate death for Abbotsford transport company

Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

The BC Coroners Service has announced that a public inquest will be held this summer into the death of an inmate at Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford. Christopher Robert Roy, 38, was being held in the segregation unit of the federal prison on June 1, 2015, when he was found hanging from a ligature in his cell and was transported to Abbotsford Regional Hospital, where he died two days later. The inquest is scheduled to take place beginning July 18 at the Coroners Courtroom in Burnaby. Presiding coroner Brynne Redford and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding Roy’s death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances. At the time of his death, Roy had been serving a two-year sentence for a break and enter at a residence in Kelowna.

‘Line not crossed’

After driving his truck for eight years, Pardeep Arora decided to start a small transport company, operating from the garage of his house, in Abbotsford. He spent long days working alongside with his wife, and his first TEAM: Raaj Kang, Rami Gulati, Kaushal Gakhar & Deepak Kapoor to launch Triple Eight Transport Inc., which began with just the one truck in 2001. This was 15 years ago, and now it has grown into a thriving and successful business. Having grown from its humble beginning, Triple Eight Transport provides service from B.C. to Toronto and all points in between, as well as to 48 U.S. states, with a diverse fleet of equipment and drivers.

toe to toe with them along with my fellow classmates to debate ideas,” she said. Dave Pinton, UFV’s director of communications, said UFV values “an exchange of knowledge and ideas in an environment of intellectual freedom… However, that line gets drawn if there’s any kind of speech or display that promotes hatred, contempt, discrimination against any social or national or ideological group or ethnic group.” That line was not crossed on Monday, said Pinton. The demonstration was a collaboration with We Need a Law, a national organization which advocates for abortion-restricting legislation. Monday’s demonstration concentrated on late-term abortions and abortions conducted based on the gender of the fetus: scenarios which Canadians are most likely to oppose, according to the group’s director Mike Schouten. Schouten said that by starting a conversation where people are most likely to have common ground, his group hopes to “build a groundswell” from there.

The current B.C. penalty is a $167 fine and three demerit points, the same as disobeying a school crossing guard. In Ontario, a first offence of passing a school bus results in a fine of $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points, and a second within five years can result in a fine of up to $4,000 and up to six months in jail. Local costs of climate change calculated A report lays out the potential impacts of warmer weather on local water and fish Kelvin GAWLEY Contributor

Mitigating the effects of climate change could cost Abbotsford and Mission more than $600,000 to keep its creeks flowing and full of life. Three scenarios explore the possible effect of a warming climate on the region’s waterways in a report from Amy Peters, the water conservation program coordinator for the A b b o t s f o rd / M i s s i o n Water and Sewer Services. The most extreme scenario would occur if the area saw five consecutive years as hot as the current record for hottest year. It is considered “extremely improbable,” and a mitigation strategy was not proposed as a result. A second and more probable scenario would

require the city to spend an additional $330,000 a year to mitigate lower water levels, if the next

A flow monitoring station is also recommended for Downes Creek, in the second scenario.

More trails, more parks and better washrooms Parks in and around Abbotsford will cater more to the aging population, provide more access to lakes and rivers and have better washrooms, if a new plan is executed successfully. The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), has laid out a plan for how it may improve in the next 10 years in a report titled “Regional Parks Strategic Plan 2014-2024.” A number of key priorities were identified after a “multi-pronged public consultation process.” They include an apparent desire for more walking trails, more access to waterways, and a need to improve the state of washrooms. The plan also includes the desire to expand existing parks and acquire new parkland. The report acknowledges “the reality of limited funding” and the need for more money to accomplish all of its goals. Part of the plan will include pursuing grant funding to pay for the FVRD’s goals.

Give our team a chance e to earn your business!

The Abbotsford Atom A1 Hawks were the big winners at the Hometown Hockey event in Abbotsford last month, and now they are seeking your vote. The minor hockey team, made up of 10and 11-year-old players, won the Cheer Like Never Before contest on Feb. 21, and now have a chance to compete against the entire country for several prizes. Way back in November, the team, with help from parents, put together a song and cheer to submit for the contest. The Hawks became a finalist to perform when Hometown Hockey came to Abbotsford in February, and the club beat out four other clubs to wow the judges and win the Abbotsford region. They were shown live on Sportsnet, and also received hockey sticks from Bauer for the big win.

The Hawks now take on 23 other teams from all across Canada to battle for the top prize, which is a trip to Vancouver and all-access to the Vancouver Canucks final regular season game against the Edmonton Oilers on April 9. The winning club gets the chance to meet Canucks players, participate in a game day skate, perform the cheer in the Canucks dressing room, and also receive more prizes from Bauer. Hawks parent Karen Pretty said it’s been quite a ride for the team. “They were super excited when they won,” she said. “They’ve become so good at cheering and have such good team spirit.” Pretty said she wants to see Abbotsford come out and support the boys. “We are the only Abbotsford team competing against 23 other teams across Canada,” she said. “The winner is determined by a public

vote starting the evening of March 27 and runs till midnight on April 1. “You can vote once every 24 hours and you can also vote on multiple devices each day. We need all the support and votes we can get. Last year’s winning team from Newfoundland had 100,000 votes in a week.” She said winning the grand prize would be a thrill for the team. “Lots of the kids have never been to a Canucks game so this would be a fabulous experience to do it all with their team. They would also get to stay two nights in a hotel in Vancouver and be treated like real NHL pros.” Locals can follow the team on Twitter, @ Vo t e _ A b by H aw k s , and can help vote the team in at hometownhockey.com/contest. To watch a video of the cheer, visit yo u t u b e. c o m / watch?v=qrpeePI6i5I.

Local cadets bring home gold Biathlete championship held in Valcartier, Que.

Cadets Emmanuel Bussani and Ethan Algra from the Silverfox air cadet squadron in Abbotsford are shown competing in the patrol race at the National Cadet Biathlon Championship.

Six biathletes from the local 861 Silverfox air cadet squadron in Abbotsford returned home with 13 medals, two top unit team awards and Top Junior Male trophy after competing at the National Cadet Biathlon Championship. The event, held March 2 to 7 in Valcartier, Que., had two individual competitions and two team competitions scheduled. B.C.’s junior male unit team made up of the Silverfox squadron’s Emmanuel Bussani and Ethan Algra finished second behind Team Quebec. The local pair also finished first in the patrol race in both the open male (12 to 18 years) category and the junior male category, taking two gold medals. Algra also won an individual gold in the mass start competition and was awarded the Nikki Keddie trophy for the

Top Junior Male. The Algra/Bussani team was awarded Top Junior Male Team as well as Top Open Male Team. The entire Team BC then received another medal for scoring the second highest aggregate points among the provincial teams. Algra and his teammates Bussani, Thomas Schratz, William Schratz, Ariel Bussani, and Caelen Pennington all came home with silver medals. Algra then packed his skis and rifle again to head back to Valcartier to join his brother and Canada Winter Games alumni Jarod Algra to represent B.C. along with 14 others at the Canadian Biathlon Nationals from Mar. 13 to 20. As a 13-year-old, Ethan had raced up to the senior boys (15 and 16 years) category this season in order to be eligible for provincial team consideration.

Danny Boy, Noreen and Buachaille On Eirne. Continuing their tradition of paying homage to the musical culture and traditions of Ireland, Celtic Thunder’s latest show is a depiction of both their musical footprint over the past eight years and their heritage of Irish and Celtic music. The powerful anthems Ireland’s Call and Caledonia, heartwarming ballads Song For The Mira and Take Me Home, and lively crowd favorites such as Seven Drunken Nights all serve to showcase the musical talent of each soloist. Celtic Thunder was formed in Dublin in 2007 and was named Billboard Magazine’s Top World Album Artist in 2008, 2009 2011 and 2015, while the group has had LPs placed in the World Album Top 10 every year since 2008. Tickets for their Abbotsford show will be available at ticketmaster.ca, by phone at 1-855985-5000 or in person at the Abbotsford Centre box office.

Readers challenged to think about diversity Ken HERAR

# C y c l i n g 4 D i v e r s i t y, along with your response. In past years the question has been age-restricted, but this year we’ve opened it to all ages, and hopefully we will get an outstanding response before the March 31 deadline. There will also be a colouring contest for children ages five to 10 which parents can pick up at The News front desk. It’s popular with young kids and usually gets entire classes at schools vying for the top three spots. If you are a teacher and would like me to come to your class to speak to the kids about The Diversity Challenge, send me an email at my address below and I would be more than happy to come for a visit. Whether it is the diversity question or the colouring contest, I think it’s a fabulous idea for schools to participate, and it’s really exciting for me as an organizer to witness young minds in action tackling this opportunity in a positive way. News publisher Andrew Franklin says, “The News is excited to partner with Cycling4Diversity in this awareness campaign. Our city reflects a true multicultural community and this campaign allows us to engage like-minded people to share a positive message in social media. A huge thank you to Ken Herar for spearheading this important message of an inclusive community.” For more information, contact Ken Herar at kenherar@ gmail.com

LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST

A dream job at The Reach When Kris Foulds began working at The Reach Galley Museum in 2008, she knew she had found her dream job. As the curator of historical collections, Foulds often leads tours through exhibitions that bring together The Reach and MSA Museum Society’s rich material culture collections, photographs, and archival material.

“At that moment, I knew I had to work harder to become the best person I could be and help create the best community and world that I could.”

You have to choose to be happy.

“I fell in love with museum work from the moment I started. I’ve always had a passion for history and I enjoy working with the public,” she says. “I couldn’t believe my good fortune in finding a profession that was comprised of learning, sharing fascinating stories, and caring for precious objects.” Established in 2008, The Reach Galley Museum has become a hub of cultural and creative innovation in the Fraser Valley, and aims to expand the community’s understanding and appreciation of art. While Foulds spends her days sharing the stories of others, she has some of her own that she holds dear. One of the most significant is when she got her first summer job at the MSA Museum more than 30 years ago, setting her on the path that eventually led to her current role. The other, she says, was when she became a parent.

KRIS FOULDS

“You have to choose to be happy,” she says. “We all need and deserve beauty and creativity in our lives, and The Reach is a great place to be inspired.”

The stakes are high for medication mistakes As people age and begin to face various conditions that make daily living more difficult, caregivers and care-receivers should start to consider a plan for aging-in-place. While there are many considerations for being able to continue living independently, the ability to manage one’s medication is key. The reality is that medication errors are common and can lead to unnecessary doctor or hospital visits. In fact, many hospital admissions are due to incorrect use of medication. Unfortunately, it is only after a medical event occurs that many caregivers become aware that their loved one is struggling with their medication regimen. While it may seem like a daunting conversation to have, there are two questions a caregiver can ask their loved one to determine if more sup-

port is needed for taking their medications properly: Can you tell me how you feel when you don’t take your medications correctly? How would you feel if we looked into getting you a service that provides enhanced support to help you follow your medications regimen? When it comes to options for medication management, both caregivers and care-receivers need to consider the health, wellness and comfort of the care-receiver. While pill boxes offer minimal support for anyone managing complex medication regimens, there are automated options available, like the Philips Medication Dispensing Service.

tiple medications with 24/7 monitoring,” explains Lidia Kowalski, Executive Director of Valley Alert Lifeline Society. “It’s designed to help seniors take the right dose of medication, at the prescribed time, so they can continue to live independently at home.” Valley Alert Lifeline Society has been serving seniors and caregivers for more than 20 years. While the majority of their subscribers use the Philips Lifeline medical alert service to get help for falls or medical emergencies, more and more families are discovering the benefits of the Philips Medication Dispensing Service as well. “I told my pharmacist how the bubble pack was

not working for my dad,” says Sherrill Bond, a local caregiver. “He was forgetting to take his medications on time or was taking them too often. The pharmacist recommended that I contact Valley Alert Lifeline. Both my parents used the Philips Medication Dispensing Service until they went into full care. With the support it provided, they took their medication when prompted, and if they didn’t take their dose on time, I would get a call from Philips Lifeline.” For more information about the Philips Medication Service or to receive a free self-assessment brochure, call Valley Alert Lifeline Society at 604854-5991 or visit www.valleyalertlifeline.ca

CARMICHAEL John Fraser

November 9, 1917 - March 15, 2016 Fraser passed away at his apartment in Abbotsford on March 15, 2016. Fraser leaves behind his 4 children: Rob (Judi), Jean (Rick), Drew (Melanie) and Donnie (Danny); 8 grandchildren and their spouses; and 9 greatgrandchildren. Joys of life meant everything to Fraser. His family was the greatest part of that but he loved his work and play as well. He had a lengthy and well-respected career in Agriculture and Horticulture, the majority of that with the BC Government. He always enjoyed the challenges of a good game of curling, golf or cards. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying family camping, hunting, and fishing, as well as international travel with his wife, Marjorie. Fraser passed on his love and knowledge of horticulture to all of his family and that knowledge carries on in them today. Fraser was known for his compassion towards his fellow human beings, and that was never more obvious than in the past seven years as he provided constant love and attention to Marjorie. There will be a Celebration of Life for Fraser at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 23rd at Abbotsford’s Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fraser’s name to Trinity Memorial United Church - online donations can be made: http://www.trinitymemorialuc.com “Greet everyone you meet with a smile and I will be there to smile back at you.” Online condolences to the family may be made to: www.wiebandjeskefh.com Wiebe & Jeske - 604.859.5885

KEITH

Robert (Bob) John March 2, 1928 - March 15, 2016 It is with great sadness that his family announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Keith on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, with his loving family by his side. Bob was born in Chilliwack on 2 March, 1928 to John (Jack) and Muriel Keith and is survived by Lorna, his wife of nearly 64 years, and daughters Kathleen (Ken) Habijanac, Laurie (David) George, son Ian, grandchildren Keryl Billen (Cory), Dianne and Bryan George and Julie Habijanac, brother Gordon (Helen), sister Margaret Ward (Joe), and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Chilliwack High school and then Ontario Agricultural College. He returned to B.C. and was Assistant Herdsman at Tranquille Farms and it was here that he met his wife-to-be; they married and lived in Chilliwack, Bob running the family dairy farm before returning to another family tradition, the feed business. Working for B&K, he was transferred to manage the store in Courtenay, then back to the Fraser Valley to Abbotsford where the family settled. He finished his working career with the Farm Credit Corporation. Bob lived a good and full life. He joined the Masonic Order in 1959 and the Order of the Mystic Shrine in 1982, and was a proud and faithful member of these Orders for the remainder of his life. He lived according to these Orders’ values, to be principled, civil and humble but kept the Scottish Irish humour and the love of music from the home of his upbringing in his own home. He related to the quintessential Canadian pastimes too, with fast ball in which he played in the local men’s league through his 30’s and curling which he played through his 70’s. His passion in his retirement was gardening, especially tending to his beautiful rose garden. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 2:00 pm at Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way, Abbotsford, with a reception following at the church. Heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for Bob during his long battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to Trinity Memorial United Church Memorial Fund. 1924 - 2016 Henry Teichrob passed away in complete peace, surrounded by the love of his family on March 19, 2016 at Maple Ridge Hospital. Born in Siberia in 1924, he came to Canada as a child of refugees; his parents eventually settled in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. He is predeceased by his daughter, Barbara (1977), his mother, Maria, father, David, his siblings, Mary, John, Peter, Jake and David. He married the love of his life, Freda Hiebert, in 1945, and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Henry excelled in academic life and for more than thirty years, he was an educator and administrator in Saskatchewan, at Caronport High School and in the city of Regina. When he retired from his profession, he and his wife Freda served for ten years in Christian ministry that took them to hundreds of churches in North America, Europe and, courageously, to Russia right after the fall of the Berlin Wall. After moving to Abbotsford in 1975, Henry took up civic life as an expression of his belief that the privilege of Canadian citizenship meant service to his community. Over 14 years, he was both a school trustee and a city councillor during which time he sat on a multitude of boards and commissions. Among many other benefits, he helped to bring public transit, a new library and the Abbotsford Regional Hospital to his beloved city. He mentored and encouraged leaders in government at every level. During this time, he developed Allied Property Management as a successful business partnership. Henry was deeply engaged in church life, offering his leadership at Seven Oaks Alliance and Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren. Most important to Henry were his faith and his family, whom he adored and loved without reserve. Left to mourn his loss and to celebrate his life are his beloved wife, Freda, his daughter Lynn, his son Gerry (Ruth), his grandchildren Leah, Julie (Darren), Matthew (Heather), Rachel (Derek) and his great-grandson, Graham. His memorial service will be held at Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, on Monday, April 4th at 2:00 p.m. Online condolences to the family may be made at: www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com Woodlawn Funeral Home 604-853-2643
