Council looks Jann Arden into decades in Cranbrook old complaint TR E VO R C R AWL EY
Cranbrook council heard from two separate cases involving infrastructure complaints at a regular meeting on Monday this week. One complaint actually dates back decades. The first, a petition submitted by six residents on 18th St. South and one on 12th. Ave S, is a request to have city and water services routed into their homes. In their petition, the residents noted they have been petitioning the city since Maurice Klinkhamer was mayor in 1970. “There should be a fire hydrant at the end of 17A St and 11 Ave to have the system looped and therefore the ability to flush the line,” wrote
the residents in their petition. “We understand that a property owner to the north of us on 12 Ave has also applied for water and sewer services which could be included in the loop. This could all be implemented into the plans. “We have paid taxes on these properties for approximately 38 years with no water and sewer. It is time this was addressed.” The petition suggested pursuing grants from the provincial and federal governments to pay for the work. “It is imperative we get figures on this as soon as possible due to lowered water tables affecting wells and septic systems,” they wrote.

Your Top 10 Scams of 2015 Avalanche warning issued ahead of long weekend B A R RY CO U LT E R
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has announced its list of the top scams of the year past. “The smoke has cleared and BBB has a better understanding of the scams that affected you and yours over the past year,” said a press release issued by the BBB. The BBB wrote said the Top 10 Scams is a “good news/bad news affair.” In 2014 Canadians were scammed to the
tune of roughly $71 million. In 2015, that number came down by about $10 million. “That’s the good news. Canadians are becoming more savvy, more adept at spotting a scam and letting others know. The good news, however, is still tainted by under reporting.” The BBB said the $61 million lost in 2015 is likely just 5 per cent of what was actually lost, “as victims often feel too ashamed to do anything about it.”

Avalanche Canada is issuing a special public avalanche warning for backcountry users for the upcoming long weekend. The warning applies to Banff, Yoho, Kootenay and Jasper national parks, Kananaskis Country, and the Purcell and North Rockies regions from March 25-28. “The main issue is a deeply buried weak layer that has recently produced large hu-
man-triggered and natural avalanches. While not obvious to the eye, large human triggered avalanches are possible, as are naturally occurring avalanches with triggers such as cornices or daytime warming,” reads a bulletin from Avalanche Canada. Avalanche Canada warns that people who are unfamiliar with the backcountry and do not have any training in avalanche safety should avoid dangerous terrain this week-
end. For those with experience and training, be extremely cautious in areas with thin snowpack and limit your exposure by avoiding large slopes. “Avalanches can be initiated from a distance and can propagate across entire mountain features,” reads the bulletin. “It’s also very important to avoid slopes threatened by cornices. Pay particular attention to where your group
stops to group up and ride in avalanche terrain one at a time.” Avalanche Canada advises backcountry parties to have an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel. Backcountry users should also take a two-day Avalanche Skills Training 1 course as the minimum in training for working or recreating in avalanche terrain. College of the Rockies Hosts Indigenous Event Daryl Sc hmidt
College of the Rockies’ Aboriginal Gathering Place was the site of a unique event on Friday, March 11. ‘Our Voices, Our Future’ was organized for Indigenous students and community members and saw over 50 participants throughout the day. Organized by College of the Rockies Indigenous student mentors, the aim of the event was to have participants learn from the Indigenous community and to encourage attendees to take Indigenous education seriously. Throughout the day, six Indigenous guest speakers from the region gave 20 minute presentations. After introductions by some of the student mentors and Student Association member Jerod Dobson, Dr. Christopher Horsethief offered a presentation about his work examining the relationship between culture and communication, the dy-
namics that pose challenges to Indigenous leaders and organizational resilience that drives language revitalization. Dr. Horsethief was followed by Eldene Stanley, a member of the Ktunaxa Nation who has nearly 30 years of experience policing all over Canada, including in many First Nation areas, during her career with the RCMP. Mrs. Stanley presentation centred on education and traditional knowledge Ktunaxa Nation member, Robert Williams, the majority owner of two businesses – Tipi Mountain Native Plants and Tipi Mountain Eco-Cultural Services, shared his experience with being an entrepreneur in Ktunaxa Territory. tance of art in the development of youth and community. The final presentation of the day belonged to Herman Alpine. As a long-time resident Elder at College of the Rockies, Alpine was
able to incorporate his many years of guiding students into his presentation about the contributions Elders provide to education. ‘Our Voices, Our Future’ was the first event of its kind at College of the Rockies. In addition to the organization by the College’s student mentors, it was also supported by the Students’ Association and College of the Rockies’ Faculty Association. Andrew Judge works closely with the mentors on a regular basis and was impressed with their work to pull together the event. “The Indigenous student mentoring group came together to organize a fantastic community event,” Judge says. “Not only were the presenters able to speak to their personal stories as indigenous people, but those who attended were able to walk away with a deeper understanding of the importance of indigenizing education.”

Scam Tracker is a microsite with a heat map and search function that allows the user to find information on specific scams throughout

But those numbers keep going up. The BBB says one of the key things people can do to prevent getting scammed is to regularly change their passwords to online accounts.

EKC’S Community Cash Awards a chance to ‘invest’ in local groups For the Townsman
East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKC) has received 17 applications for its first ever Community Cash Awards, and will soon be announcing the six finalists. EKC has created this
unique event for local community groups as a chance to apply for funding creating awareness. Unlike other funding initiatives, the Community Cash Awards provides EKC members and members of the community an opportu-
nity to “invest” in and select the award winners. EKC CEO Jody Burk says the Community Cash Awards is aimed to develop healthy and diverse communities. “We’re so impressed with the quality of the 17

Each of the Community Cash Award finalists will go to the next round which is to set up information tables to promote their organization and project at EKC’s branch of their choice April 5-9 and in Sparwood April 4 to 8 from 11am to 2 pm. After showcasing their projects at EKC’s Cranbrook branch, all of the finalists will be invited to set up displays to promote their initiative at EKC’s Annual General Meeting taking place in Cranbrook on April 22 at the Heritage Inn. At the AGM, members, non-members and
youth will receive EKC Community Cash to ‘invest’ with one or more of the community groups of their choice. Each of the groups will receive $500 for attending the AGM as well as the real cash equivalent to the Community Cash they accumulate throughout the event. The group who receives the most Community Cash will also receive an additional $500 in funding. “We’re excited that this process provides a fun and inclusive way to involve both EKC members as well as local youth and the community in selecting the Community Cash Award recipients,” Burk said. During the meeting portion of the event a children’s movie will be shown in another room. Popcorn and limited su-
pervision will be provided for those that would like to attend the meeting. Additional supervision by parents and or caregivers may be required. After the meeting all guests are invited back for the announcement of the winner of the Community Cash Awards. Local martial artists bring back trophies from Calgary For the Townsman
Three fighters out of Huncar’s Warrior Arts went to Calgary this weekend to test their mettle in the Five Elements WKU provincial try outs in the Five Elements headquarters on Macleod Trail. This was the first outing for the HWA crew after moving to their own home in the Rocky Mountain Martial Arts Family Centre. This outing was a controversial one for the Cranbrook fighters who all brought back trophies, but for two of the three who went this was not the way they wanted to get the first three trophies for the new gym. Representing HWA were Seth Ryley, Carter Duncan and Brody Harris, aged 13 to 14. These young warriors trained hard and left blood and sweat on the mats at the RMMA facilities. Preparation for this kind of competition is intense and these young men
worked without complaint. Padwork, bagwork, sparring, shadow boxing and very hard fitness training is a must for any combat sport fighter but for Muay Thai fighters hard work is the currency that pays for fighting skills. Seth Ryley had a great time in Calgary. In continuous fighting, he was grouped with a handful of fighters and managed to come home with a first place trophy. Seth, unfortunately, was unable to continue in any of the other categories as he suffered an injury to his jaw in the continuous competition but coming home with a first place trophy on his third outing as a kick boxer was a pretty great accomplishment. This being the second time in three competitions is quite impressive. For Carter Duncan and Brody Harris the experience was not a great one. They wanted to do a little tougher competition so en-
tered the K1 Kickboxing and Muay Thai provincial tryout competition, however no other fighters their age wanted to contend with low kicks and knee strikes to the body so they ended having to fight each other. This was not what the boys wanted after travelling to Calgary and working so hard. However, fighting in front of a crowd is always a good experience and they are both ready to test themselves again. All the fighters did their gym and their community proud by being brave enough to travel out of town and having the courage to fight under the pressure of being in front of a crowd. It is an experience that many wonder about but few experience. To do it with composure is an accomplishment indeed — and these young men did exactly that

City council looks into infrastructure complaints Continued from page 1 The second correspondence, sent in by two families on Anderson Crescent, is requesting that the infrastructure beneath their road be replaced this fiscal year. “Far too frequently there are problems with sewer and water leaks that necessitate the water being turned off for a day at a time,” wrote one resident. “This is inconvenient, unhygienic and does not seem fair treatment of taxpaying residents. “After the water is turned back on, it is brown and full of sediment. This raises concerns about the safety of drinking water in such a state.” City staff investigated and noted that the road is not listed as a priority road or having priority infrastructure underneath it as detailed in the 2015 Integrated Infrastructure Capital Plan (IICP). “However, records confirm that, while the water line is not as old as in other areas (1971), it is experiencing premature failures similar to older water lines in the city,” read a staff report to city council. “A recent site visit confirmed that these failures are also negatively impacting the road surface i a similar manner. In addition, it appears that groundwater issues are present and contributing to the road deterioration.” The city notes that there were 17 repairs on Anderson Crescent from 2002-2015 with the last repair occurring in September 2015, adding that it is a significant number of issues relative to the length of the road. “The repairs are attributable to corrosion (electrolysis), rocks on the line (holes), main breaks, service repairs, and valve issues,” read the report. “Some of this can be attributed to soil conditions and others to poor initial construction.” Engineering staff reported that roads and infrastructure are monitored and updated on the IICP accordingly. Anderson Crescent doesn’t sit in the five year plan, but could be accelerated if premature failure of the infrastructure continues. Both mayor and councillors sympathized with both cases on 18th St. and Anderson Crescent, directing staff to look into both situations; Mayor Pratt asked staff to get a preliminary budget figure on system loop at 18th St. while also asking staff to look into the IICP priority lists to look into bumping up infrastructure work on Anderson Crescent. Downtown business priorities Council received correspondence from Joey Hoechsmann, the president of the Downtown Business Association, that provided information on priorities as identified by DBA members in recent meetings. The information was gathered at a Town Hall meeting hosted at 1710 Workspace a few weeks ago.
“The Cranbrook DBA appreciates the interest received from Mayor and Council and desires to continue to work proactively with the City towards improvements that will benefit everyone. There were many suggestions named at our Town Hall event,” wrote Hoechsmann. Priorities varied among a few different categories with the following just a small selection. • For beautification, seasonal outdoor patios, meeting space/conference centre, additional bike racks and clean up of empty lots were noted as key priorities. • For downtown events, members identified music festival, beer/wine festival, community dinner outdoors (picnic) with local food/block party/ cookoff and and art crawl/art festival/ busking festival as ideas to pursue. • For growing business, DBA members suggested additional dining/ pubs, improved promotion of events and signage, more town hall networking events and collaborative marketing and advertising/map of downtown/strengthened branding. “The Cranbrook DBA is actively coordinating further discussions with its members and stakeholders with the objective being to hear different perspectives on some of the more popular issues. We will keep the City of Cranbrook updated on our progress,” wrote Hoechsmann. Request for Funding City council received a few requests for funding from a few different groups. The 1813 Army Cadets asked for their $70.30 fee to be waived at Rotary Park for a Walkathon on April 9 to honour veterans who served and died during the battle of Vimy Ridge 99 years ago in France. The organization is hoping to bring together men, women, children and other service groups in the community to assist in walking the 3.6 kilometres to honour the 3,600 Canadian soldiers who died. There is no fee for the event, however, a $5 donation is appreciated. The walk will commence at 10:30 a.m. from the Kennedy Hall at 1305 1st St. S and proceed for 3.6 kilometres ending at the Cenotaph in Rotary Park with a barbecue. The event is raising money to assist cadets travelling to the 100th anniversary of the Vimy Ridge battle, which will be marked by a special centennial ceremony in France in 2017. The city also received letters requesting funding from Kootenay Zone (Zone 7) for financial support towards the 2016 B.C. 55+ games, which is being hosted in Coquitlam, B.C. and the Mount Baker Dry Grad committee, which requested funding for providing food and punch at Prom.

Local NEWS BC Parks seeks public input on engagement policy

Feedback is being sought to increase the public’s awareness about activities taking place in BC Parks. The goal of the Public Notification and Engagement Policy is to better inform the public about park use permits and the status of applications. It will also set out how the public is notified when a permit will be issued, and when public input is being sought. Currently, local newspaper advertisements are the only
means of public notification about permits required for commercial use that take place in parks and protected areas. As part of the new policy, all types of permit applications and subsequent decisions will be posted online, similar to the current park boundary adjustment proposal process. The intent is to ensure transparency on decisions to authorize activities within parks, and increase awareness of permitted activities within parks by reach-
Local grad gets Ph.D. in Biomedical Science from Tulane University Submit ted
On March 4, 2016 Christina (Tina) O’Grady successfully defended her Ph.D. Dissertation on Viral Genetics in the pathology department at Tulane University in New Orleans. Tina O’Grady graduated from Selkirk Secondary in Kimberley in 1998. She then attended the University of British Columbia where she earned a degree in Biology in 2002. From 2003 to 2006 she attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. During that time she worked fulltime in the Science Libraries and attended University half-time. She obtained a Master’s Degree in Library Science and a Master’s Degree in Cell and Microbiology in 2006 from The Catholic University of America. From 2006 to 2011 Tina worked first at the University of New Orleans and later at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York as a Science Librarian. From 2011 to her recent PhD completion Tina was a Research Fellow at Tulane University. In 2013 Tina received a pre-doctoral fellowship grant from the National Institutes of Health, and won the honor of Graduate Student of the year in 2014 in the Pathology Department. Dr. O’Grady, her husband Phillip Williams, and son Sid Francis Wil-

be posted on the BC Parks website for 90 days until June 22, 2016, and people are encouraged to review the policy and provide feedback. BC Parks will review all input received when drafting the final policy,

We
all live our lives according to celebrating the triumph of God’s love and different calendars. Of life. We reflect on the joy of Christ’s resurcourse, we are most familiar rection. To make the connection between the resurrection of Christ and the Jewish Passover also helps us see that the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is not simply about Christ. It is about the whole of this fallen creation. Everything that has been broken is now healed. All that has died has been brought to life again by God’s grace and love. This story of resurrection and life is the story of God turning again and again towards us in grace and love. Easter is a bursting forth of faith. It is not a day for explanations, as if we could explain what God has done in raising Christ from the dead. Many have tried, suggesting that resurrection is a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit. Or they say that the teachings of Jesus live on, immortal like the plays of Shakespeare or the music of Beethoven. I want to suggest that Easter is much more radical than that. We celebrate the love of God in all its mystery and all its power. Easter is about the renewal of life of creation. Easter is a day for celebrating, for rejoicing, for immersing ourselves in the mystery that in the midst of our ordinary lives, God is at work revealing another dimension of existence. God brings the dead to life, demonstrating his presence in the world. The resurrection is not primarily about some change in Jesus. It is about the change that God works in the world. It is about the change which God is working in us. The resurrection is about our salvation and our healing. In Greek, those two words are related. Salvation is about being made whole and healthy. Letters to the Editor Support for Refugees The reason that I am writing this letter is that I am shocked that the City of Kimberley has not renewed the cleaning contract run by a former refugee. To top it off, the city has hired a company that is not even a Kootenay company. In 2012, members of the East Kootenay Friends of Burma (EKFOB) toured the West Kootenay to garner support for refugees. Their presentation on the Burmese Karen refugees revitalized our refugee committee and in 2013 a refugee family related to a Kimberley family in arrived in Creston. They have been a wonderful addition to our town. It is very exciting at the present time to see how Canadians are rallying to bring Syrian refugees to Canada. I have been in touch with members of your new refugee group in Kimberley and know that your community is getting involved again. It is wonderful to bring the Syrian people who are in so much danger to our welcoming country but we can’t forget that there are refugees all over the world that have been in camps their whole lives. One of the tasks of a refugee committee is to work on reunification of refugee families. Usually, when the first refugee family is established they will work with a refugee committee to get their relatives out of the camps. One of Kimberley’s Burmese family’s wants to bring the last brother, his wife and five children to Canada. They have been in a refugee camp more than 15 years and some of the children have never known what freedom is. Now his relative that cleaned for the City of Kimberley has lost
his job and cannot help bring the family to Canada. They say that it takes a whole community to raise a child: to successfully resettle a refugee family also takes the whole community. At the February council meeting the town of Creston gave a $250 grant to our committee to show their welcome to the next refugee family we bring. Establishing a refugee family means finding work for adults who often do not speak English. There usually is not a lot of available employment of this type in a small community and we find in Creston that it takes really caring business people to hire our refugees and help them learn what is expected of an employee I cannot understand why the City of Kimberley is not proud of their refugees and showing their support by continuing to have them clean their offices. Cominco Gardens The Mayor and City Council need to reconsider the possible closing of Cominco Gardens. I feel very strongly against the closing of one of the most beautiful gardens our area has to offer. My father Ted Duivenvoorden was a supervisor for 20 years 1968-1986. It was owned by Cominco then the city took it over. He took pride in living in the house at the gardens with his family and made it his life long passion to make it what it is today.
It draws in tourists from all over the world. They spend time and money in Kimberley and that is much needed in a town that relays on tourism. The crew at the gardens, Dan and Larry, do their job with passion and direct many tourists to our attractions in this area. The gardens are important for our seniors to spend time at the garden and reflect on the past. It is a place to relax and enjoy nature. The memorial rose garden and heritage perennial beds are a tribute to those who have made Kimberley there home. I for one enjoy going to sit by Teddy Creek and the perennial bed named after my father. Somehow the city needs to find the money to keep this tourist attraction going. So I ask the city council to find a way. Losing this would put another nail in the coffin for Kimberley — we have lost so much already. So council please wake up and smell the roses. Budget doesn’t balance itself
T
he first Justin Trudeau budget continues the new Liberal government’s epic string of broken promises. Expanding the Canada Pension Plan went by the wayside to start the year, as jacking up payroll taxes wasn’t seen as a good way to respond to rising unemployment. Then there was the national carbon price, which dissolved into a vague commitment to keep working at it with the disagreeing provinces. Now there is the torrent of red ink that washes away the solemn promise that deficits would be no more than $10 billion a year, for no more than three years. According to rookie Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s new guesses, deficits will be $29.4 billion this year, $29 billion next year, $22 billion in 2018 and a mere $17.7 billion in 2019 as the governing party campaigns for re-election. The budget even projects another deficit for the year after, apparently assuming that all this borrowing and spending will deliver another majority government. The campaign promise was built around the claim that infrastructure spending was needed because the country had slid into deficit and recession. Turns out there was no recession, except in oil-dependent Alberta and Newfoundland, and no deficit until the Liberals opened the spending taps. And what about the promise to cut the

federal small business tax from 11 to nine per cent? Priming the engine of job creation and all that? Gone. Not even the infrastructure promise is kept. Most of the spending is for ongoing programs, including “equalization,” even though B.C. appears to be the only “have” province left at the moment. On budget day, the B.C. government sent out Communities Minister Peter Fassbender with strict instrucBC Views tions to bite his tongue about this busted fire hydrant of Tom borrowed money. FassbendFletcher er announced that he and Premier Christy Clark are “delighted” at the infrastructure spending, of which the only identifiable new project for B.C. is a sewer system in North Vancouver. Massey Tunnel replacement? Nope. Transit lines in Vancouver and Surrey? We’re continuing preliminary engineering work. Widening the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 16 to Alberta? Maybe these will be promises for the next federal election. Fassbender tap-danced when asked why the only province with a balanced budget should be pleased about a federal pledge to increase the national debt by about a quarter. He kept circling back to his key talking point, that Ottawa didn’t sabotage B.C.’s liquefied natural gas plans by taking away capital cost allowances for this industrial
investment. Instead Ottawa is jeopardizing the biggest LNG project by dithering over environmental impacts that have already been studied for three years. The biggest Trudeau promise of all is to rescue the middle class from the awful stagnation inflicted by the Harper years. The title of Morneau’s debut budget is “Growing the Middle Class.” A quick fact check takes me to Statistics Canada’s most recent table of median family income by province. After the 2009 economic crisis (triggered by reckless debt among other things), B.C.’s median income for all family types was $66,970 in 2010, $69,150 in 2011, $71,660 in 2012 and $74,150 in 2013. That’s about the same increase as the national rate – not spectacular, but pretty good considering low inflation. Better than most of the world, in fact. Again, this government is borrowing gobs of money to throw at a problem that may not even exist. At this point I’ve all but given up on the Trudeau government displaying actual competence, for anything other than going to parties and flinging rose petals at climate change. Dynamiters & Wranglers set to scale KIJHL summit Kootenay International Junior Hockey League championship series begins Saturday at Kimberley Civic Centre

When the Kimberley Dynamiters advanced to the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League championship in 2015, it likely came as surprise to many fans and pundits around the league. Finishing second in the Eddie Mountain Division, the Nitros played the role of underdog through nearly the entire run, before defeating the Kamloops Storm in the six-game championship series to become the first Kimberley-based KIJHL team to win it all since the Kimberley Knights defeated the Trail Smokeaters in 1980 — a whopping 35 years back in time. After winning the league crown last season, expectations for the Dynamiters 2015-16 campaign quickly shot as high as the 9,336-foot summit of Fisher Peak. Having seen what a motivated, speedy and skilled Dynamiters squad was capable of in 2015, there have been few surprises in 2016. Finishing the regular season atop the KIJHL with a record of 41-7-0-4, the Kimberley Dynamiters claimed the regular season title before skating past the Fernie Ghostriders, Creston Valley Thunder Cats and Beaver Valley Nitehawks to claim the Kootenay
Conference belt and advance to the 2016 KIJHL championship, earning the opportunity to defend their 2015 title. Now, Kimberley’s beloved junior hockey heroes will aim to do something that hasn’t been achieved in 12 years — string together back-to-back KIJHL championships. “This is the true test of not too high, not too low,” said Dynamiters goaltender Tyson Brouwer. “It’s been our motto all playoffs. Have that burning desire inside that you want to lift that trophy again and go to Victoria [for the Cyclone Taylor Cup].” The last team to score consecutive league titles was the Nitehawks in 2003 and 2004. Achieving the repeat feat won’t come easy as the rough-and-tumble 100 Mile House Wranglers — making their first ever appearance on the KIJHL championship stage — provide the opposition after finishing 33-12-3-4 to win the Doug Birks Division before running over the Revelstoke Grizzlies, Chase Heat and Summerland Steam to win the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference banner. season, splitting the season series. Travelling to 100 Mile House Sept. 18, the Dynamiters were shutout 2-0 by the Wranglers who were backstopped by a 22-save effort from goaltender Zane Steeves. “When we played them in 100 Mile House they were very, very physical and got away with it,” Bancks said. “I’m hoping the games are well officiated and it’s hockey. I want it to be a hockey series.” Oct. 24, the Kimberley Civic Centre was host for the regular-season grudge match and once again it was the home team skating away triumphant as the Dynamiters claimed a 5-2 victory. “They’re big, they hit a lot — we played them at the start of the year,” Brouwer said. “I’m not sure if we weren’t ready or it was because we were a new group. But they came out hitting in their own rink.” Keenan Haase provided a hat-trick performance to spark the Dynamiters on home ice. Despite splitting the
regular-season series, all that happened in those two games can be thrown out the window. Too much has happened — for both clubs — since those early contests. “It’s going to take everyone — everyone’s going to have to go all in,” said Dynamiters captain Jason Richter. “Everyone needs the will to win and the heart to win. We’re going to do everything in our power to get the win. “They’re a hard-working team. They’ve got kids who want to win and they like to bang the body quite a bit.” While it’s easy to focus on the difference-makers that may exist within each team’s lineup, there’s something to be said for the game-changing presence of the crowd. Both the Dynamiters and Wranglers are renowned league-wide for having rabid, passionate fans and that added energy could factor in to the best-of-seven championship more than one might imagine. “A lot of fans made the trip down to Sum-
merland and no word of a lie, we had more fans than [the Steam] had,” Wranglers head coach and general manager Dale Hladun said to Pat Matthews of MyCaribooNow.com. “The owner, when we were in the lobby, had fans calling him to make sure they could get tickets to get in. So when we won [at the Summerland Arena], we saluted the fans as if it were a home game.” Should any of those passionate Wranglers fans make the 800-plus kilometre trek to the East Kootenay, they might have a bit more difficulty out-roaring the Kimberley crowd. For a Monday night Game 5 against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks a total of 1,155 fierce fans packed their way into the hallowed halls of the Kimberley Civic Centre.

CALGARY - Everything and nothing will have changed for Meaghan Mikkelson when she pulls a Canadian jersey over her head Monday at the women’s world hockey championship. Reclaiming gold from the U.S. is still the goal. The Americans have beaten Canada in five of the last six world championship finals. A pregnant Mikkelson watched her country’s most recent defeat in 2015 from her Calgary home. Six months after giving birth to Calder, the two-time Olympic gold medallist returns to the national team for the 2016 world championship in Kamloops, B.C. The host team opens the preliminary round Monday against the defending champion U.S. at the Sandman Centre. Mikkelson will play her first international game for Canada since an overtime win over the U.S. for Olympic gold two years ago. There’s anecdotal and some scientific evidence indicating that increased red blood cells and a surge in hormones during pregnancy can make elite athletes stron-
ger in the weeks after birth. Mikkelson will vouch for that theory. “I’m shocked at how much stronger I am,” the defenceman says. “It’s pretty crazy and awesome. “Somehow during my pregnancy and in the past two months I’ve gained a lot of muscle.” It’s a compensatory perk for the hard work she’s put in to re-gain her pre-pregnancy body and game. CLEVELAND - The Browns have signed free-agent quarterback Robert Griffin III, who hasn’t been the same since his dazzling rookie season in Washington. Griffin didn’t play a snap in 2015 and was recently released by the Redskins. The Browns met with RG3 last week and will now give him a chance to resurrect his career and win their starting job. “We are excited about Robert joining the Cleveland Browns,” coach Hue Jackson said. “He brings starting experience to our team and organization. He’s a young, athletic, talented passer and he’s really just starting out in this league. Just like every player on our team, Robert will have to earn every opportunity he gets. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I belong to a large group of friends across several states who get together often to camp and ride motorcycles. Recently, one couple in our group had a terrible accident. The husband was killed and the wife suffered brain damage. “Jane” does not remember the accident and only recalls her husband because she has been told about him. She is not capable of making any major decisions. Here’s the real tragedy: Jane has two children. Her 21-year-old son is now responsible for all of the decisions, and he is overwhelmed. Fortunately, he seems to be adjusting. We can’t say the same for his 17-year-old sister, “Astrid.” Her world has fallen apart. Right now, the entire show is being run by Jane’s mother-in-law, who never got along with Jane. She plans to sell Jane’s house and move Astrid in with her. She recently took away Astrid’s phone and car as a punishment for not doing her chores, leaving her unable to visit her mother or stay in touch with us. No one in the family seems able to stand up to this woman. We have no legal standing and are frustrated watching this runaway freight train. Jane’s family has asked for our advice, but all we can tell them is to get a lawyer and they don’t have the funds for that. I know both sides of the family are grieving, but this is just a mess. Please help. -- Harley Momma from Texas Dear Texas: This is such a tough time for everyone. Try to keep in mind that, although Jane and her mother-in-law are not close, it doesn’t mean Mom is mistreating her granddaughter. You are getting only one side of the story. Also, while your advice to find an attorney is good, the family should clarify what for. Does someone want custody of Astrid? Is the grandmother keeping Astrid from seeing her other relatives? If so, perhaps the entire family can pool their resources or look into Legal Aid. In the meantime, please do your best to stay close to Astrid, not only through social media and phone calls, but also by befriending her grandmother. She lost her son and now has responsibility for her granddaughter. It would be a kindness for you to offer assistance, and it also will be supportive of Astrid. Dear Annie: This is about “Not a Creepy Guy,” whose soon-to-be daughter-inlaw thinks he’s creepy, for no particular reason. My 30-year-old daughter, with whom I have a wonderful relationship, has told me that young women think men in their 50s are creepy just because of their age and gender -- no matter how gentlemanly or polite they may be. She says now that I am entering my 60s, I am leaving behind the “creepy middle-aged” guy demographic and will enter the “kindly grandfather” stage. I am looking forward to it. Hopefully, this daughter-in-law is looking at a stereotype and has no particular concern. But he is right to talk about it with her. -- Too Old to Be Creepy Dear Too Old: We have never noticed this particular stereotype and think it is odd and potentially damaging. But thanks for mentioning it. We hope the new daughter-in-law will grow up before Dad is too old to care. It was the biggest fight in Canadian boxing history and it turned George Chuvalo into a source of national pride, even if he lost the one-sided contest to the man they call “The Greatest,” Muhammad Ali. Chuvalo’s epic 15-round bout with Ali at Maple Leaf Gardens on March 29, 1966, transformed the lightly regarded Toronto fighter into a symbol of courage and determination and lifted him into the top rank of contenders during a golden age of heavyweights. It was a gripping time for boxing, with Ali embroiled in controversy over his anti-Vietnam War stance and refusal to be drafted. The Louisville, Ky., native famously said at the time that he “ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong.” He had been slated to fight Ernie Terrell in Chicago, but fierce opposition from U.S. war veterans and others over what they called Ali’s “unpatriotic” statements moved Illinois state officials to declare the bout “illegal.” Instead, the fight was offered to Chuvalo — on only 17 days notice. Ali’s promoters originally looked at staging it in Montreal, but when war vets threatened to boycott the Expo 67 world’s fair, then-mayor Jean Drapeau backed out. Even in Toronto, there was opposition to letting Ali fight and officials demanded that they not bill it a title bout, even though it would be the champion’s third defence. That he had converted to Islam and changed his name from Cassius Clay made him even more unpopular to some. But nobody could deny Ali’s magnetic personality and his brilliance in the ring. When he fought Chuvalo, Ali he was coming off the three most talked-about fights of his early career - two wins over Sonny Liston and a dramatic 12thround technical knockout of Floyd Patterson. The Chuvalo fight was supposed to be easy. Ali had named him the “Washerwoman” after witnessing the churning left-right attack Chuvalo had used three years earlier against Mike DeJohn. When the fight finally began, with 13,540 at the Gardens and thousands more watching in theatres, Ali threw all his speed, skill and flair at a comparatively plodding Chuvalo. But a funny thing happened — Chuvalo did not go down. He took Ali past the 12th round for the first time in the champion’s career and was still on his feet when the bell ended the bout after 15. The judges and referee Jackie Silvers scored it a lopsided win for Ali, with most having it 13 rounds to two. But just by staying upright and not giving up against the world’s best heavyweight made Chuvalo a hero to fans across Canada and around the world. “He showed Canadians weren’t soft, that they were durable and they wanted to win so badly and were good,” said Lewis. “It was electric. Everybody was tuned in.” Chuvalo said later he had never faced a fighter with such quick hands, but found Ali’s punches less heavy than expected. Ali said: “He is the toughest fighter I ever fought.” After the Ali bout, Chuvalo starting taking on the top heavyweights, including George Foreman, Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry. And he had a rematch with Ali in 1972 in Vancouver, a 12-round loss by unanimous decision. Chuvalo never got the world championship he coveted, but he retired in 1978 having never been knocked down in 93 professional fights. The 1966 Ali fight didn’t make him rich. After management fees and taxes, Chuvalo said he ended up with only $12,500 of his $49,000 purse. Ali reportedly was paid $125,000, a large sum back then. But the fight remains the highlight of his career, and Chuvalo insists that, in a way, he was the winner. “When it was all over, he was the guy who went to the hospital because he was (urinating) blood. Me? I went dancing with my wife,” he said in his biography “Chuvalo: A Fighter’s Life.” “No question I got the best of that deal.”
