A sold-out crowd packed Mission’s Clarke Theatre on Friday night as Canada’s own Jann Arden was in town to perform. The audience was treated to a mix of songs and stories as Arden used her sense of humour to talk about life growing up in Alberta as well as singing her greatest hit songs. The multi-platinum-selling artist received a huge ovation at the end of her show. BOB FRIESEN PHOTO
Mission RCMP responded to 17,098 files in 2015, an increase of about 2,000 from the previous year. According to Mission RCMP Insp. Ted De Jager, 14,000 to 15,000 files is the norm for the district. “So there was a big spike last year bringing us up to 17,000 and we’re on track this year to hit 17,000 as well, he said. However, less than half of those files can result in chargeable offences. “All the rest of them are everything from mental health calls to assistance calls,” he explained. De Jager made the comments to a crowd of about 200 people who came out to the second annual Policing Forum, held at the Mission Leisure Centre on Wednesday night. The forum provides the public a chance to ask questions and provide input to the district’s top Mountie before he prepares a list of policing priorities to be presented before council. “I think we are all in agreement that property crime is going to be one of our priorities, without a doubt,” he said. Other possible priorities in-
clude traffic enforcement and disorder in the downtown area and at Stave West. The top call for service in Mission in 2015 was theft. There were 1,415 files, 75 per cent of those involved theft from vehicles. Traffic offences were second with 947 files. Other files that made the top20 list include 759 false alarm calls (sixth on the list), 539 accidental or abandoned 911 calls (11th) and 327 suspicious vehicle calls (17th). Despite the recent series of break-ins in the downtown area, the RCMP only responded to 391 break and enter files, putting it in 14th place. Of the top 20 crimes, none were violent. In fact, only four per cent (699) of all files in 2015 were considered violent crimes against a person. Thirty per cent were domestic violence. The majority of the remaining 70 per cent involved a known attacker – people who know each other getting into disagreements. “It’s very rare that a stranger attacks another stranger. It does happen, but not often.” De Jager said he has seen many comments on social Continued on A5

Recyclables, food thrown away Audit indicates more waste still needs to be diverted Kevin Mills Mission Record
Many Mission residents are still throwing out food waste and recyclables in their garbage bags. A new report to council indicated that the curbside garbage stream in Mission contained 28 per cent compostables and 14 per cent recyclable materials. Those figures come from the district’s bi-annual 2015 curbside waste audit. The audit examines waste from 100 random single-family homes and helps identify areas that need improvement. Mayor Randy Hawes said the amount of recyclables and food waste being thrown out is still “pretty significant” and more needs to be removed. The compostables found in curbside garbage bags consisted of food waste (83 per cent), contaminated paper (16 per cent) and yard waste (one per cent). The breakdown of recyclables found in household garbage is plastics (37 per cent), paper (21 per cent), EPR materials (15 per cent),
other depot-drop materials (eight per cent), metal (eight per cent), glass (six per cent) and refundable beverage containers (five per cent). EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) materials include household batteries, lightbulbs and other items than can be recycled, but should be dropped off at a recycling depot, not placed in garbage or blue bags. Diversion targets: Overall waste reduction targets are required by the Fraser Valley Regional District’s approved Solid Waste Management Plan. Municipalities are required to achieve a goal of 65 per cent diversion by 2018. In 2015, Mission was at 53 per cent diversion of curbside waste and 17 per cent for landfill drop-off. The district is currently examining two initiatives to improve the landfill percentages. One is to implement and enforce disposal bans at the Mission landfill and the other is to investigate mandatory waste diversion for the insti-
tutional, commercial and industrial sectors. One initiative that will begin in April is the move to bi-weekly garbage collection. Beginning April 4, residents will be allowed to place up to two 80-litre cans of garbage, not exceeding 20 kg in weight, for pickup. The garbage will
be collected once every two weeks. Compostables and recyclables will still be collected in unlimited amounts once a week. “I think this will drive people to actually do the right thing and it will improve our diversion rates but then there will be some people who will probably keep doing
OBSERVE THE SABBATH
Even God had to rest after six days of labor, and the observance of the Sabbath, besides commemorating that day of divine rest, is instituted to give all who labor a rest from their toil. Notice how in the formulation from Exodus, the requirement is extended even to one’s servants and animals: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.” (Exodus 20:8-10) For those of us who are inclined to work seven days a week, this is surely a good rule. Everyone needs rest, and with work taken out of the picture we have time to worship, time to spend with family and friends, and time to recharge life’s batteries. Throughout the Old Testament, we see unequivocal statements commanding us to observe the Sabbath, with plenty of warnings from the prophets if we don’t. In the New Testament, however, we see a loosening of the particular rules governing the Sabbath, in essence saying that the Sabbath was instituted for us and should be observed as each person or church sees fit.
what they’re doing, but they’ll throw their bags of garbage on the side of the road somewhere,” said Hawes. He suggested it may be a good idea to create a reward system to help deter illegal dumping, adding people who notice dumpers could snap an iPhone photo to catch them in the act.

media about stating the downtown area is not safe. He disagrees. “I would not feel unsafe having my wife walking downtown by herself because this is a safe town. There are people who need help. There are people who are just bad people and we will go after those people. “The reality is, the town is very safe.” He said there is a need to change the perception that there is something nefarious going on in the community.
Mission RCMP Insp. Ted De Jager speaks at the policing forum. “About 90 per cent of the crime in this town is created by probably 20 to 50 people,” he said adding that prolific offenders
need to be targeted. He also said there is a need to look at root causes like addiction, because the police won’t be able to “arrest our way out” of the problem. “The majority of those property offenders are drug-driven. They are desperate for their drug fix. And if you think that our way forward is to lock them up and throw away the key, it’s not going to work.” Echoing his message from last year’s forum, De Jager said the community, government and resource groups all have to work together to resolve those issues.
Another downtown break-in There was another break-and-enter in downtown Mission early Wednesday morning. Mission RCMP are investigating the incident, which occurred at the Big Box Outlet store on First Avenue. Police received the call at approximately 7 a.m. from a person who noticed a broken window at the Remax office next door. When police arrived, they discovered a hole had been cut through the wall and into the outlet store. This is similar to several other business breakins which have occurred over the last several months in the downtown core. “Our prolific offender suppression team has identified a suspect responsible for some of those offences,” said RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. The investigation is ongoing and until charges

On Monday morning (March 21) at approximately 1 a.m., police responded to a robbery call in the area of 6th Avenue and James Street. A man in his 40s was walking in the area when he was approached by an unknown suspect who demanded his money. The suspect may have had a weapon of some type. The suspect fled on foot when a passing vehicle stopped. The suspect is described as a black male in his 30s, 5’10”, with a slim build, wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants. His face had blotches of different coloured pigment. Police are requesting anyone who may have observed this incident to contact them at 604826-7161.

So much trash talk
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
In one more week, Mission residents are going to have to start getting more creative with their waste. The district’s new policy of bi-weekly garbage pickup starts in April and all of those people who have been half-heartedly separating their recyclables and compostables are going to have to become more vigilant. If not, those bags of trash are going to start piling up. Weekly pickup will continue for recycling and food waste, but your garbage is going to hang around for an extra week. Public reaction has been mixed at best. While some agree that the new system will promote more diversion, others feel it is just an excuse for people to illegally dump their trash on the side of the road. Hopefully, the public will see it for what it is – an attempt by the dis-

trict to get to the 65 per cent diversion rate mandated by the Fraser Valley Regional District. Let’s face facts. Landfills aren’t getting emptier and everyone is going to have to start doing their part to divert as much waste away from them as possible. However, if the district thinks this will solve their waste issues, they are mistaken. It’s a good step, but like any change, education is going to be needed to help alter people’s routine. Suggestions on how to make recycling easier, what can be recycled and how to keep your stored garbage safe from animals will also help. Much like the rot pot campaign for food waste, it will take time to achieve change. But for now, it’s time to roll up our sleeves, dive into our garbage and take a closer look.

Alternatives to urban drug ghettos Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views My recent columns on B.C.’s struggle with the growing westward migration of transients have produced responses that fall mainly into two groups. The largest is people relieved that somebody is questioning the urban media narrative. That’s the one where drifters, drug addicts, welfare shoppers and thieves are the victims, and working people whose hardearned communities are being degraded are the problem because of their selfish, uncaring attitudes. Then there are readers so marinated in our nanny-state education, media and political system they object to anything other than a big-government response. They tend to ask, what’s your solution, Tom? As someone who has lost one relative to heroin addiction and almost lost another, I reflect on the history of successful addiction treatment. That is one of detox and abstinence.
That’s why I oppose the failed model of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where resources are poured into concentrated housing and “harm reduction” that perpetuate addiction, handouts and helplessness. Housing Minister Rich Coleman is rolling this out in other communities, in what I fear is an effort to paper over the problem for an election year. The Globe and Mail recently profiled a methamphetamine addict enrolled at Onsite, the belated treatment addition to Vancouver’s Insite supervised injection site. It was his fifth try, which may have something to do with the fact that when he walks outside he is in the middle of Canada’s biggest street drug bazaar. Contrast that with a facility called Baldy Hughes, a therapeutic community 30 km outside Prince George. It’s a working farm, designed to provide a year-long program of abstinence-based therapy and meaningful work. It uses the traditional 12-step program developed by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, with peer support and group therapy. There’s a greenhouse for winter farming, livestock to tend and the residents have designed and built a new horse
stable. There’s also a beekeeping project. Residents can complete their high school education, take first aid training and learn basic computer skills. What they can’t do is leave unescorted during their treatment program. They can’t bring drugs, alcohol, weapons or

It’s a costly program, with a small number of spaces available on referral from B.C.’s social development ministry. Others can finance it with the help of medical employment insurance. I mention this not to suggest it is a solution for every community, but to compare it with what the B.C. government is spending millions on. A news event was arranged to greet the
first resident moving from Victoria’s squalid downtown tent camp to a refurbished nursing home. And who was the poster child for this project, hand-picked by the agency that runs the growing network of shelters in the area? He described himself as a former Edmonton resident who was hitch-hiking around, going from shelter to shelter and ending up camped in the squat. He was impressed by the tidy room with three meals a day he was being given, in a “low barrier” facility where booze and drugs are brought in, no questions asked. What he was really looking forward to, in addition to accommodations, was an opportunity to kick back and play his favourite video game. That would be Grand Theft Auto, where your character runs around stealing cars, escaping police and meeting with criminal gangs. It’s popular with adolescents, which these days means anyone under 30. This is where your tax dollars are going. Waves of people come in, with key trouble spots being communities on the major highways coming into the Lower Mainland. Forty-two per cent recyclable in waste cans does not work out to a viable 50 per cent reduction in collection! In fact, unless council’s plan is to subsidize furnishings for a Mission version of tent city with our excess waste, I’d like to understand their plan for the thousand bags of legitimate garbage per month that are not collected.

ship and began to get involved. After he was “railroaded” into joining the government affairs committee, Sawatzky said he began to realize what the chamber was about. “The chamber is a group of concerned business individuals that really think about each other and the viability of business and community.” He also spoke of the ABCs of the chamber – Advocacy, Benefits and Connections. “The advocacy part doesn’t have to be lobby i n g b i g government. It can be as simple as SAWATZKY advoc a t ing on behalf of your neighbouring business.” He said nobody can question that the chamber has “fantastic” benefits, and the chamber’s job is to get those benefits out to members. And making connections is key to any successful business. Also joining the chamber board are newly acclaimed directors Asvind Mani (Mission Automotive) and J.J. Whitley (DV8 Media), who will serve a term ending in 2017, as well as Andrea Walker (Walker Park Media), Jason Hughes (Taylor, Tait, Ruley and Company) and Brian Rock (Fraser Valley Real Estate Board), who will serve terms ending in 2018. The new directors join current directors Ilona Klimczak (CEC Health and Safety) and Alana Martens (RONA). Director retires: One of the longest serving board members of the Mission Chamber has retired. Cal Crawford has been an active board member for the chamber for more than 28 years and chose not to let his name stand for re-election this year. “The board will certainly miss his insight, experience and support around the table,” said Sawatzky.

District Update THIS IS OUR MISSION In the Spotlight Economic Development Select Committee Applications District Council is seeking up to 15 appointees for the Economic Development Select Committee (EDSC) to act as the advisory body providing advice and support to the District of Mission in its economic development initiatives.
Bi-Weekly Garbage Collection Begins April 4 Starting April 4, 2016, up to two 80-litre cans of garbage, not exceeding 20 kg in weight, will be collected every two weeks. Compostables and recyclables will still be collected in unlimited amounts every week. The 2015 waste audit showed that 28% of curbside 'garbage' was actually compostable, and 14% was recyclable. That means 42% of 'garbage' should not have ended up in the landÄll at all. Properly sorting your waste will preserve landÄll space, reduce landÄll greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources and help us meet our community’s targets for keeping recyclables and compostables out of the landÄll. Over the next two weeks, an information package will be hand delivered to all homes currently receiving curbside collection. For more information and for answers to your questions, visit mission.ca/waste-management.
Community Service Awards The District of Mission Community Service Awards honour those who have demonstrated exemplary volunteerism within our community. Join us on April 7 at the Clarke Theatre (33700 Prentis Ave ) to honour the 2016 award winners. Visit our Community Service Awards page at: www.mission.ca/municipal-hall/community-service-awards to see award categories and the list of 2016 winners.

Concerns regarding drinking water, septic tanks and fire prevention services have stalled a rezoning request that would allow for construction of a proposed threelot subdivision, which could include secondary dwellings on each lot. Council held a public hearing Monday night regarding a rezoning application for the property at 11445 Wilson St., in the Stave Falls area, and several residents voiced opposition to the project. Among the concerns was the fact that the mountainous area does not have city water or sewer services. Several residents were worried that because the new project would require septic tanks positioned above other properties, residue could leach into wells, contaminating other homeowners’ water supplies. Others raised concerns that adding more homes could pose a danger as fire rescue services would be unable to combat a major blaze due to a lack of fire hydrants in the area. Still others complained that the developer, Orca Pacific Development, has already begun preparing the land, clearing trees and building an access road, before getting final approval from council. Ed Grice, a representative from the developer, told council that, under the current zoning, the developer is allowed to put in access to the property and no permits are required, regardless of what council’s final decision may be. He also said the access road was being constructed with fire safety in mind. “We had the fire marshal and the assistant fire chief up there to take a look at the property because we were very concerned about the possibility of fire up in there,” said Grice,
who added the road will have a 12 per cent grade because he was

Expanding the business licence program
Chamber asks district to consider including the entire Lower Mainland
The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce has requested the current Inter-Municipal Business Licence (IMBL) program boundaries be extended to encompass the entire Lower Mainland. The request was made to Mission council earlier this month as chamber members surveyed indicated a strong support to merge the existing programs into one. IMBL reduces red tape by allowing construction and trades-related businesses to operate in more than one municipality, rather than by obtaining non-resident licences in each municipality in which they operate. Currently, there are 11 mobile business licence agreements in B.C. with 73 participating municipalities. In the Lower Mainland, there are four programs: Fraser Valley, Metro West, North/West Vancouver, and Tri-cities. Several municipalities participate in more than one if they are conveniently located. “I have heard from my members who have an IMBL that it greatly helps them maintain proper compliance as they only have one or two licences to worry about. This saves them time and money,” said Dave Sawatzky, government affairs committee chair with the chamber. The Mission chamber participated in a survey distributed through 12 chambers and boards of trade representing a membership of over 13,000. Of those responding, more than 80 per cent strongly indicated support for expansion into one convenient program extending from the North Shore through to Hope. Further, the survey results indicated that more than 40 per cent of respondents throughout the region either were not aware of the IMBL program or had little knowledge of whether a licence in another municipality is required if they are just “visiting” a client. The chamber has asked the district to: 1. Develop and implement a Regional InterMunicipal Business Licence program for the Lower Mainland 2. Develop educa-

Mission took on Abbotsford in the first game, defeating them 2-0. Sam Gerbrand scored first for Mission in the second period followed by Kia Murphy’s insurance goal. Next up was Langley, who played a strong aggressive game, defeating Mission 5-1. Darian McKamey scored Mission’s lone goal. Langley and Abbotsford were both defeated by North Delta, which was Mission’s final opponent. The Stars came out strong, drawing first blood with a goal from defenceman Rylan Elson. Captain Daniel Schmidt buried another one a few minutes later to give Mission a 2-0 lead With minutes left in the second period, North Delta scored to narrow the gap to 2-1, but Mission held on the rest of the game to win. Mission finished the tourney with a 2-1 record and had to wait for the final game between Abbotsford and Langley to find out if they would be crowned champions. Abbotsford and Langley finished in a 3-3 tie to secure the championship title for Mission.

Just one win away Ben Lypka Mission Record
The Mission City Outlaws have a chance to win their first ever Pacific Junior Hockey League championship on home ice on Saturday night. Up 3-0 in their best-of-seven series to the Grandview Steelers, the Outlaws saw their 11-game playoff winning streak snapped on Wednesday, after falling 3-2 in overtime in Burnaby. Mission trailed 2-0 after two periods on Wednesday, but stormed back when Sammy Zeinab scored a shorthanded goal to get the Outlaws on the board, and David McGowan sent the game to overtime by tying the game with 4:32 left. Steelers forward Ian Prevost was the overtime hero, breaking the Outlaws’ playoff streak by scoring 6:04 into the extra frame. Special teams hurt the Outlaws, as they al-
lowed both a power play and shorthanded goal in the game. They also outshot Grandview 36-22. Game three on Monday saw the Outlaws display more of their offensive prowess with a 7-4 win in Burnaby. Mission won the first two games of the series at home, defeating the Steelers 7-4 and 6-5. Outlaws head coach Brad Veitch said his squad have so far been able to make the more defensively minded Steelers play the Outlaws’ offensive game. “We’re getting the lead on them and not letting them get into that defensive shell,” he said. “We’re also putting a lot of pressure on their goalie, but at the same time we’re putting a lot of strain on our defence and goalie with the way we’re playing.” Game five occurs on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the Mission Leisure Centre’s South Arena.

Each year, families flock to Fraser River Heritage Park in Mission to take part in the annual Easter Egg Hunt. While it is a fun, family day, most people don’t see the work that goes into organizing the event. Roy Archer, president of the Mission Elks Club has been helping to organize the event from the beginning. It’s just a small portion of what the Elks do in the community. On a dark winter night, Roy Archer knocked on a basement suite door on Cherry Street. It swings open to reveal a young woman and three children scampering about. No furniture sits in the room. “Merry Christmas,” is all he says when he hands her the envelope. He walks back into the quiet, unlit street. But the silence is broken by the young woman’s voice searching for him, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” In her hands was a $300 cheque for food. Archer is the president of the Mission Elks Club, an organization that supports several groups in the community. He is also still happily helping out with this year’s Easter Egg Hunt in Fraser River Heritage Park on March 27. In a supermarket, he once asked a child if they would attend the hunt that he and the Mission Elks had organized for 25 years. When the child’s mother remarked that she used to go as a kid, Archer realized that he’d been at it for too long. His hair still has all the volume, but it’s almost white. He easily wedges a large basket of chocolate eggs under his arms, but he grunts when he pushes open the Elk hall door. The Elks have been an institution in Mission since 1912, and their vision of community aid gave Archer and many others a venue to volunteer for many years. Archer has been a
member since the ’80s. Food concessions are a large part of the Elks’ budgets. Even on weekends, Archer and others would wake up at 5 a.m. to get food prepped at events. Once, in the heat of the day, Archer was outside boiling corn, and Mayor Randy Hawes walked by and had to ask, “You still at this, Archer?” He says that it’s time for new people to step in. The torch is harder to carry now, “Especially in this economy,” he says. People have bigger tradeoffs and are more preoccupied with themselves. That doesn’t necessarily mean people are more selfish, but merely that it’s hard to find the time to volunteer. As such, Archer says service clubs are going downhill. Archer has been retired from the grocery business for a while. Now, when he’s not doing things with the Elks – which is mostly all he does – he’s tending his garden. He has a bunch of lumber in his yard. So when an envelope from the municipality arrived in his mailbox, he was afraid that the District was finally telling him to clean up. He opened it. In his hands – a nomination for the District’s community lifetime achievement award. An award he so deservingly won. It will be presented to him, and other winners, at the 2016 Community Service Awards Ceremony taking place Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the Clarke Theatre at Heritage Park Centre - 33700 Prentis Ave.

Protect yourself: It is important for seniors to stay up-todate on immunizations and other health screenings. By age 50, women should begin mammography screening for breast cancer. Men can be checked for prostate cancer. Also ensure that all of your vaccinations are up-to-date.

Many seniors are discovering that yoga can be a great health benefit
• Tips rebuilt
Never too old for yoga
• And more
Yoga is designed to promote physical and mental health and has helped millions of people across the globe control their stress and improve their flexibility, and studies have shown that yoga is only growing in popularity. While some men and women over 50 may feel their time to take up yoga has passed, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, yoga can pay numerous dividends for the over 50 crowd. Q Yoga can help alleviate hypertension. Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a potentially dangerous condition that makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body. Hypertension contributes to a hardening of the arteries known as atherosclerosis, and can even contribute to the development of heart failure. A person’s risk of developing hypertension increases as he or she ages, so it’s important that men and women over 50 take steps to reduce their risk of hypertension, and yoga can help them do just that. A normal blood pressure is 120 over 80, but people with hypertension often have blood pressure readings of 140 and above over 90 and above. Studies have shown that yoga can reduce the top number, which is referred to as the systolic blood pressure. Q Yoga helps practitioners maintain healthy weights. While yoga may not help men and women shed weight as effectively as more vigorous activities, it can help them maintain healthy weights.
Many men and women over 50 find vigorous or strenuous physical activity too demanding, and might not be able to perform such activities with the frequency necessary to prevent weight gain. But while yoga is physically demanding, those who practice yoga often find it takes a smaller toll on their bodies than more traditional strength training. Another way yoga can help to maintain a healthy weight is through its relation to stress. Yoga can help to relieve stress, and lower stress levels reduce the likelihood that men and women will overeat, which is a common response to elevated stress levels. Q Yoga promotes strong bones. Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which tissue loss leads to brittle and fragile bones. Aging is a significant risk factor for osteoporosis, and women are at even greater risk than men. Because it is a weight-bearing exercise, yoga forces practitioners to hold the weight of their bodies up against gravity. This resistance to gravity puts mild stress on the bones, which respond by laying down new bone growth. But unlike other weightbearing activities, such as jogging or walking, yoga does not damage cartilage or put stress on the joints Though yoga might not have been popular when today’s men and women over 50 were in their 20s and 30s, that does not mean such men and women cannot take advantage of the numerous physical and mental benefits yoga has to offer.

SAYS Gordon Dainard
What was I thinking? Have you misplaced or forgotten something and begun to wonder if you are having memory loss problems? There is no doubt that our
brains change as we age and with this also comes changes in our memory systems. Memory loss is a great concern for many seniors; however, it’s not an inevitable part of aging. We all have memory lapses from time to time. Misplacing keys, forgetting an acquaintance’s name, forgetting what your spouse asked you to pick up on the way home, are common experiences for people of all ages. It’s important to understand what changes in memory are associated with normal aging and those that are more serious and require medical attention. Generally speaking, our memory peaks in our 20s and then begins to gradually decline. However, research shows that some types of memory decline, various stay constant, and with training, others can even improve as we age. Memory lapses and declines in certain memory systems
are a normal part of aging. In contrast, memory changes that negatively affect one’s daily functioning are much more serious. These are typically associated with memory loss and not part of normal aging. Some examples are: • Not being able to find your way home while in your neighbourhood; • Forgetting how to do everyday things. When memory problems affect your daily living, it may be time to seek out professional help. Likewise, you may also notice changes in friends and family members that require further medical assistance. asweage∙ Have you had “the talk” with your parents yet? If you haven’t, and your parents are over 75, now is probably a really good time. What I’m speaking of is their plans for implementing and paying for the cost of in-home care, should one or both of them need extra support at home. The need for care can happen very quickly, due to a fall, an illness, or a sudden flare up of a chronic condition. It’s a fact that 1 in 3 seniors will experience a fall this year. Our provincial health care system provides an excellent level of emergency help through your local hospital. However, where we see gaps is when a loved one leaves the hospital. What was it that caused the emergency in the first place? Has anything changed at home to prevent it from happening again? Who is going to help with the day-today activities like grocery shopping,
cleaning, cooking and laundry? Often, this falls on the family (aka – you, the busiest person on the planet). If no one is there to help, they often end up back in the hospital over and over again. The vast majority of seniors want to stay in their home as long as possible. It’s also a fact that people recover better at home. And people who are monitored by a health professional in their first week home from leaving the hospital, have a significantly reduced chance of getting sick again and returning. I know this from personal experience. Around 2003, before I ever knew about Nurse Next Door, my mom was diagnosed with Dementia. I had no idea what that meant at the time, but over the next 2 years, I witnessed a decline in her capabilities that landed her in the local hospital

Did you know you don’t have to move into Assisted Living to have assisted living? It’s true. You can have the freedom of living safely and securely, all in your own familiar home. If you want help with nutritious meals, housekeeping, driving to appointments, getting groceries, and getting out to activities you enjoy, you don’t have to move into an assisted living apartment. We can set up your own unique wellness program that provides safety, security, healthy meals, transportation, grocery shopping, housekeeping and fun outings and community experiences. We will help fall-proof your home and keep your mobility up. And when needed, extra care can come home too. Similar to doctors that make ‘house calls’, if you need help with medication, mobility, or personal care, our Certified Care Aides and Licensed Nurses come to assist – in the comfort of your own home.

every few months. She was fiercely independent, and refused help, but finally it reached the point where the doctors would no longer allow her to return home without 24/7 supervision. My mom had expressed over and over that she did NOT want to move from her home of 40+ years, and she did not want to go to a nursing home. So I set about making that happen without knowing how much it would cost, or how to pay for it. I consulted a company like Nurse Next Door, plus legal help, as well as a Financial Planner with experience working with seniors. Together we set up 24/7 Care Service, and brought mom home. Although she was on a small disability pension and cash poor, she did own her house that was paid for many years ago. Without selling, we were able to access the equity in her home which we used to pay for the care she so desperately needed. Because we did not have “the talk” before she was deemed incapable of decision making, she paid a steep legal bill in order for me to assist her with her financial decision making. It is much better (and much cheaper) to do this while loved ones are still 100% capable. You may also want to remind

I urge you to start talking with your parents, so that if and when they need your help, you’ve got a plan. Bring in professionals to talk about their specific situation and make sure they have information about home care costs, what is actually provided by the government, how long it takes to access government care, setting up a mortgage or line of credit, etc... Planning for it now is what will allow them to stay in their own home as long as possible. If you think these decisions are tough to make now, waiting will only make them harder. I’m here to say it absolutely IS possible for people to stay in the home, with the support and care that they need, and still provide a healthy inheritance for the remaining family members (I know from experience!) In order for that to happen, you must have a good plan in place, so start today! asweage∙ Seniors can split their income and save
In 2007, senior Canadians took advantage of the new pension-income splitting provisions to help reduce their tax payable by hundreds or thousands of dollars. According to the government, income splitting provides more than $1 billion in tax relief annually for older Canadians. Income splitting allows taxpayers with eligible pension income to split up to 50 per cent with a spouse or common-law partner. When there is one spouse with very little income, the tax savings can be substantial. However, higher-income taxpayers could find it results in a reduced claw back of Old Age Security (OAS) benefits and the age amount. The first step when looking at income splitting is determining if you are eligible. You need to meet
the government’s definition of a pensioner. This means you lived in Canada at the end of 2015 or, in the case of someone who died during the year, was resident in Canada immediately before death. You also need to have received income eligible for the pension income amount during 2015. The next step is to determine whether your spouse or common-law partner meets the definition of a pension transferee. Generally, it is sufficient if the person was your spouse or common-law partner at any time during 2015. However, he or she will not qualify if you were
living apart at the end of 2015 due to a breakdown of your relationship and the period of separation lasts 90 days
or more. The person must also have resided in Canada at the end of 2015 or, if now deceased, immediately before death. If you are 65 or older at the end of the year, it also includes annuities and
payments from a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). If you are under 65, these types of payments will also qualify if you are receiving them due to the death of a previous spouse or common-law partner. The list of eligible pension income does not include OAS payments, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits, retiring allowances, death benefits or lump sum withdrawals from your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). However, is important to note that splitting CPP with a spouse or common-law partner may be possible through

Human Resources and Social Development Canada. Seniors without eligible pension income to split have a couple of options to consider. If you are 65 or older at the end of the year, but not yet 72, you may want to convert some of your RRSP funds to a RRIF. Any amounts you withdraw from your RRIF will then qualify as eligible pension income. Another strategy is to convert some of your investment portfolio to an annuity or related instrument to take advantage of income splitting. It is important to consult a financial professional before making any decisions about your retirement income. – Information provided by H&R Block This article provides only an overview of the regulations in force at the date of publication, and no action should be taken without consulting the detailed legislation or seeking professional advice.

Last week, the United Way announced that two Mission-based programs will be receive funding this year. The largest grant is for Hope Central, a program of New Heights Community Church, which will develop a circle of supports for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, leading to secure employment and housing. The second program is a new one. Aboriginal Mother Bear, operated by Mission Literacy in Motion, will provide literacy skills for at-risk parents and their children, who would not attend typical community-based early childhood programs. A third, a regional project which assists with one-time loans and financial counselling for individuals at risk of losing their housing, partners Mission Community Services with Mennonite Central Committee.

TEICHROB
It is with great sadness that his family announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Keith on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, with his loving family by his side. Bob was born in Chilliwack on 2 March, 1928 to John (Jack) and Muriel Keith and is survived by Lorna, his wife of nearly 64 years, and daughters Kathleen (Ken) Habijanac, Laurie (David) George, son Ian, grandchildren Keryl Billen (Cory), Dianne and Bryan George and Julie Habijanac, brother Gordon (Helen), sister Margaret Ward (Joe), and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Chilliwack High school and then Ontario Agricultural College. He returned to B.C. and was Assistant Herdsman at Tranquille Farms and it was here that he met his wife-to-be; they married and lived in Chilliwack, Bob running the family dairy farm before returning to another family tradition, the feed business. Working for B&K, he was transferred to manage the store in Courtenay, then back to the Fraser Valley to Abbotsford where the family settled. He finished his working career with the Farm Credit Corporation. Bob lived a good and full life. He joined the Masonic Order in 1959 and the Order of the Mystic Shrine in 1982, and was a proud and faithful member of these Orders for the remainder of his life. He lived according to these Orders’ values, to be principled, civil and humble but kept the Scottish Irish humour and the love of music from the home of his upbringing in his own home. He related to the quintessential Canadian pastimes too, with fast ball in which he played in the local men’s league through his 30’s and curling which he played through his 70’s. His passion in his retirement was gardening, especially tending to his beautiful rose garden. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 2:00 pm at Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way, Abbotsford, with a reception following at the church. Heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for Bob during his long battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to Trinity Memorial United Church Memorial Fund. Henry
August 27, 1918 - March 20, 2016
1924 - 2016 Henry Teichrob passed away in complete peace, surrounded by the love of his family on March 19, 2016 at Maple Ridge Hospital.
We are sad to announce the passing of Hazel Irene (Rene) McMaster at age 97 on March 20th, 2016. She was born in Tompkins, Saskatchewan on August 27th, 1918 and was predeceased by her parents Angus and Tina McMaster, her son Howard Lupkoski, her brothers Glenn and Gordon McMaster, as well as her sisters Violet Normandeau and Eileen Renaud.
Born in Siberia in 1924, he came to Canada as a child of refugees; his parents eventually settled in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. He is predeceased by his daughter, Barbara (1977), his mother, Maria, father, David, his siblings, Mary, John, Peter, Jake and David. He married the love of his life, Freda Hiebert, in 1945, and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Henry excelled in academic life and for more than thirty years, he was an educator and administrator in Saskatchewan, at Caronport High School and in the city of Regina. When he retired from his profession, he and his wife Freda served for ten years in Christian ministry that took them to hundreds of churches in North America, Europe and, courageously, to Russia right after the fall of the Berlin Wall. After moving to Abbotsford in 1975, Henry took up civic life as an expression of his belief that the privilege of Canadian citizenship meant service to his community. Over 14 years, he was both a school trustee and a city councillor during which time he sat on a multitude of boards and commissions. Among many other benefits, he helped to bring public transit, a new library and the Abbotsford Regional Hospital to his beloved city. He mentored and encouraged leaders in government at every level. During this time, he developed Allied Property Management as a successful business partnership. Henry was deeply engaged in church life, offering his leadership at Seven Oaks Alliance and Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren. Most important to Henry were his faith and his family, whom he adored and loved without reserve. Left to mourn his loss and to celebrate his life are his beloved wife, Freda, his daughter Lynn, his son Gerry (Ruth), his grandchildren Leah, Julie (Darren), Matthew (Heather), Rachel (Derek) and his great-grandson, Graham. His memorial service will be held at Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, on Monday, April 4th at 2:00 p.m. Online condolences to the family may be made at: www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com
Rene is survived by her daughter Idona Jones, son Garry Lupkoski (Lois), grandchildren Barry, Kim, Shannon, Rebecca & Selena as well as 3 great grandchildren, numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews, and foster daughter Joan Hodge. Rene belonged to the Royal Purple in Clearwater and Kamloops, BC as well she was active in square dancing when she lived in Clearwater, Kamloops and Vernon. She was a Studio Girl Beauty advisor in North Van in the 1950’s as well she ran her own hairdressing salon in Clearwater before becoming a sawmill worker in Clearwater where she joined the IWA. She came back to the world of beauty when she joined Mary Kay and was a consultant in Clearwater & Kamloops; never leaving the house without “her lips on”. Her family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to the staff at TRIM-Dewdney neighbourhood in Mission BC where she resided for the past couple of years whilst she battled dementia. IN-HOME CAREGIVER (Nanny)
CARMICHAEL
He had a lengthy and well-respected career in Agriculture and Horticulture, the majority of that with the BC Government. He always enjoyed the challenges of a good game of curling, golf or cards. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying family camping, hunting, and fishing, as well as international travel with his wife, Marjorie. Fraser passed on his love and knowledge of horticulture to all of his family and that knowledge carries on in them today. Fraser was known for his compassion towards his fellow human beings, and that was never more obvious than in the past seven years as he provided constant love and attention to Marjorie. There will be a Celebration of Life for Fraser at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 23rd at Abbotsford’s Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fraser’s name to Trinity Memorial United Church - online donations can be made: http://www.trinitymemorialuc.com “Greet everyone you meet with a smile and I will be there to smile back at you.”
