Plans forge ahead for new lodge

Kennedy Palmer, 10, from the Rimbey gymnastics club finished her vault at the rock ‘n roll fun meet held March 13 at the high school in Rimbey.
A new seniors lodge in Rimbey is on the horizon, but the future of the existing manor remains uncertain. Rimoka Housing Foundation board chairman Paul McLauchlin said several options have been brought forward, but nothing has been finalized to date. “The next step for the existing lodge is re-purposing. Hopefully it will still be part of the seniors’ housing portfolio,” he said. However, the lodge which now houses more than 60 seniors, may also be used to house a complimentary facility, he said. McLauchlin noted such options such as the library, playschool and Outreach School have been mentioned. The board chairman said the lodge could provide self contained housing for seniors such as the type that is available in Kansas Ridge and Kansas 11. He noted that these seniors units are now being operated under Bethany Group.

Meanwhile the dream of a new senior’s lodge for Rimbey should become a reality about 18 months from now. McLauchlin said no schedule has been set for the official sod turning, but he expects it to happen in early April. The new facility is to have 82 rooms, including six double-occupancy suites. Shundra Construction has been awarded the contract for the lodge, estimated to cost $14.7 million. Barry Architecture & Associates from Red Deer has been hired for the project. “We went through a rigorous procurement process,” said McLauchlin, noting the architectural firm has extensive experience building senior’s facilities. A management team consisting of representatives from Berry Architecture, Rimoka and the province will oversee the project. The proposed facility is to be approximately 480,000

RIMBEY REVIEW 3
Rondeel receives Alberta’s Farmer’s Market’s Community Builders Award BY TREENA MIELKE Gayle Rondeel’s passion for gardening and her desire to enhance and grow her community has not only resulted in her creating a top notch farmers’ market, it has netted her the Alberta Farmers’ Market Association Community Builder Award. Rondeel, the manager of
the Rimbey Farmers’ Market, received the award at the Old Strathcona market in Edmonton recently. She received her award along with Elaine Varty, president of the market. “It was really quite an honour, she said. “It was very humbling. Rondeel was quick to add the success of the Rimbey’s
Farmer’s Market is not only due to the efforts of one individual. She noted board members Elaine Varty and Annette Peck as well as assistant manager Connor Ibbotson, his brother Ronan and ambassador Brian McKilligan all play a role in making the market a popular hub of the community on Saturday

mornings from spring until fall. Rondeel began as manager in 2007, the same year the market was moved to Pas Ka Poo Park. “When I started, the market had 10 vendors and it had had a few different homes, she said. “But I had a vision of how I thought it should be so the community would get a total experience. Rondeel’s vision included having great vendors with eye catching displays which would be spread out on the grass, a live band playing catchy ear pleasing tunes and the delicious smell of breakfast cooking wafting in the air. With hard work and dedication, the plucky manager has been able to turn her vision into a reality. “We usually have around 35 vendors, but our goal has always been to have 50, she said. There are also two Christmas farmer’s markets in Rimbey, held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. These markets are popular with around 100
vendors in attendance. For Rondeel, the road to becoming manager began in a rather unlikely, but almost predictable way. In 1984/85 she and her husband Ed made and sold wooden toys to local markets. She also did ceramics and sold vegetables at the markets. Now, as manager of the Rimbey market she is always open to new ideas and welcomes vendors who
have new and interesting products. “I want a really well balanced market offering lots of diversity, she said. For Rondeel, meeting and chatting with the people who crowd to the market is one of the highlights of being manager. “If you bring anything to the market at all you should bring a smile or at least take one home with you, she said.

Treena Mielke On The Other Side The child is not yet two and his verbal communication skills are limited, but everyone knows that he is the boss of the family. His two older brothers know it. His mom knows it. His dad knows it. His grandpa knows it and I, his grandma, know it now, if I ever had any doubts before. I had received an SOS call to babysit, so after juggling this, that and a weekend work schedule, I arrived right on time at my destination, somewhat bleary eyed and confused, but otherwise alert and ready.

We played with the trains and the trucks. We danced to rock ‘n roll tunes that were not old fashioned, but still catchy. We ran around with these foam pool-floating devices pretending we were some kind of super heroes. (I must admit I took a quick coffee break at that time being all worn out from the dancing). That was when the twoyear-old boss took my hand and pulled me into the family’s theatre room. His blue eyes were solemn and his little mouth had a look of authority about it. I obeyed the look. He grabbed his favorite stuffy, a soft blanket and sank his little self into a miniature leather armchair,
looking for all the world like the man of the house. His older brother curled up on the couch. They were ready. What they were ready for was quite obvious. They wanted me to turn on the huge television that took up half the wall so they could watch some kind of kids show that they expected me to magically make appear. They waited. I took the remote and pressed several buttons hopefully. Nothing. “You have to point it at that thing,” said the older child pointing to a big black box in the corner of the room.” His brother said nothing, simply waited.
I pointed and pushed as directed. The screen lit up, but only with a whole bunch of little icons that meant nothing to me. “Why don’t you call my dad?” the older boy said patiently. “Okay,” I said humbly. Their dad laughed through the entire lesson on how to work the remote, even though I sternly reminded him I was the mother-inlaw, a figure to be reckoned with. His two-year-old son simply listened. As I said before he knows and almost everyone else knows who really is the boss of the family. And now I know it, too!
Workshops offer advice on how to be a dad

Production:
“Bye, mom,” said my daughter, the teacher, who headed out the door as soon as arrived with one eye on the clock, cell phone, lunch and purse in hand. Her oldest child, a slightly bigger blonde, blue eyed version of his brothers, lagged behind her, appearing to be in about the same early morning trance as his grandma. The two little pajama clad boys left at home were super happy to see me and I them, so at the beginning we simply did lots of hugging, quite enjoying our mutual admiration society consisting of each other. As always, stepping out of my world into their world was like breathing in a breath of fresh air all mixed up with wild flowers growing in reckless abandon and puppies with imploring brown eyes and floppy ears who lick people’s faces furiously. My two-year-old boss took my hand and pointed to the downstairs. I followed without question, only pausing to grab my coffee cup.
Many moons ago I was dating a single mom I will call “Carmen.” Carmen’s son “R.J.,” who aged 6 to 10 years while I was in the picture, and I got along very well. R.J. and I became friends, and although I never considered myself a “kid” person, we probably clicked because I tend to behave in a juvenile manner. R.J. had a problem. He didn’t know how to ride a bike, even though he really wanted to. I’m not sure why he didn’t have the skill; he had a father, mother and
older sister, plus aunts, uncles and cousins who could all help him learn. My girlfriend’s ex-husband, the Dad, told R.J. that he would reward his son with a Playstation video game console if R.J. learned how to ride a bike. This blew me away. I thought dads were supposed to do things with their kids, such as teach them to ride a bike and show a boy how to be a man. There are all kinds of things wrong with this “deal,” including the absence of a dad from a kid’s life, the fact that such an offer tells the kid Dad isn’t interested in the kid’s life and that bribes can take the place of parenting. I took it on myself to help R.J. learn how to ride a bike. I was reminded of this episode of my life this past week when I saw a course promoted on a few websites in the area: the Kid’nection Workshop. It’s described as, “(a workshop that) will provide information for fathers about a dad’s role and their
relationship with their kids.” Now, I’m not saying I have a problem with a class that teaches fathers that they should behave like fathers. What I have a problem with is that a workshop like this is needed in the first place. Are some Alberta fathers neglecting their responsibilities? The workshop was offered in Leduc by the Alberta Father Involvement Initiative, an organization I’d never heard of. According to their website, “With the direction from the Alberta Network for Safe and Healthy Children, the Alberta Home Visitation Network and Alberta Health Services, the Alberta Father Involvement Initiative continues its plan. This plan works on increasing the awareness of the initiative and will assist fathers and service providers with resource and training development.” On the AFII website, a recent research project, the Alberta Men’s Survey, was mentioned. Then things
started to make sense. The men’s survey was conducted last year by some U of C folks, gathering input from men around Alberta. The AFII stated the survey has “the goal of better understanding what men need in order to develop and maintain healthy relationships free of violence and abuse, and healthy personal well-being.” It’s no secret Alberta has a domestic violence problem that spans age, income, race religion or other demographics. On the Edmonton Police Service website it’s stated “As of December 31, 2014, there were approximately 7,849 events throughout the city that had a domestic violence component.” That’s just one year in one city. Further, results of the survey are available online at albertamen.com. They are quite eye opening. The responses were tabulated from 2,425 Alberta men who responded to the survey. When asked “Do men some-
times need support for their own well-being and to have healthy relationships?,” 96 per cent said “Yes.” However, nearly three out of four who responded said they don’t know of available services and supports in their community that help men with personal well-being and relationship issues. Nearly one in three men said societal/cultural expectations about being a man would prevent them from accessing support anyway. There was also information about how finances, family conflict, addictions and unsatisfactory career were keep some men from personal well-being. Kudos to those organizing the Kid’nection Workshop, and hopefully other programs like it to help fellows who need some advice. And if some guy down the street doesn’t like it, to hell with him. Letter
Marketing freedom doesn’t equate with happiness On Feb. 16, 2016 NDP leader Thomas Mulcair asked Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay “When he would restore the Canadian Wheat Board”, now that the evidence is in that the private grain companies had taken $6.5 billion from grain farmers in the last two years. The Ministers answer must have shocked Mulcair and certainly should have shocked western farmers. Yes, he said the Wheat Board had been sold (reminding Conservatives that a contract is a contract) and he would not be seizing assets, no matter how they were disposed of from G3, which is the combo of Saudi Arabia and Bunge, one of the world’s giant private grain companies. The fact that this response triggered a standing ovation from Conservative M Ps speaks volumes. In October 2011 Liberal Agriculture and Agri-Food Critic Frank Valeroite, and Liberal Deputy Leader and former minister responsible for the CWB, Ralph Goodale said “The government’s decision to kill single desk selling is a clear violation of the Canadian Wheat Board Act, which insists on democratic producer control. The Act also insists that any changes to the CWB must be made in consultation with their Board of Directors and with farmers directly, something this government has blatantly refused to do.” When Bill C-18 was recently tested in the Federal Court, Judge Douglas Campbell, on Dec 7, 2011, ruled that Ritz violated terms of the existing CWB Act by failing to hold a vote among producers about his proposal to end the CWB’s monopoly on wheat and barley sales In other words, the CWB was then ‘Illegally gained goods’ So, what in fact Macaulay, and the Liberal Government is saying is that it is okay for corporate interests to keep ‘illegally gained goods” leaving western grain farmers to suffer the consequences. In spite of the Liberal election promises, we now find that the Trudeau government and the new Minister of Agriculture, like the “Emperor with no clothes” stand revealed as no friends of Western grain farmers. And don’t tell us that the majority of us are happy with “marketing freedom”, because there has yet to be a referendum that proves it. Joyce Neufeld Waldeck, Sask.

There are no provincial championship tournaments for junior high athletics, so “CWAJHAA” is the Central West Alberta Junior High Athletics Association. This is the highest level of athletic competition in junior high sports. “JJ” is based on student population in your school. The teams competing in this tournament were Lacombe Christian School ‘A’ , Lacombe Christian ‘B’, Ponoka Catholic, Innisfail Catholic, Sylvan Lake Catholic, Red Deer’s St. Patrick’s, Rimbey Jr./Sr., and David Thompson. One school dropped out so the host school played their ‘B’ team. Rimbey played Lacombe Christian ‘B’ in the first game and rolled out
to a 23-4 score at the end of the first quarter (eight minutes], then carried it through to a 28 point victory. Saturday morning they played David Thompson in their second game. This game had a much closer start, but the Spartans hit their stride and took control in the second quarter and closed out a 14 point victory. That set them up for a championship game match up with the Lacombe Christian School ‘A’ team. The Spartans against the Sabres for title. This was the third time these two teams would compete against each other this season. Rimbey won the first game at the zone qualifying tournament that was played in Blackfalds about three

weeks ago to earn Rimbey’s birth in the final tournament as a number one seed, Lacombe getting a lower seed. The second match up between these two teams took place in Rimbey in a semi- final game at the Wolf Creek League Tournament with Lacombe coming out
on top in this game. There’s an old saying that REVENGE is a dish best served cold. Well, that’s not what happened in this championship game. Rimbey came out red hot and ready to take care of business. The Spartan ladies picked the perfect time to play their best basketball of the season (what every coach dreams of) and con-
trolled both ends of the court. By part way through the third quarter they opened up a 18 point lead, then one of Rimbey’s starting Grade 9 players, Kaylea Greer- Schallock took a frightening crash into the end wall and was removed from the game. As good teams usually do, Lacombe seized the moment as Rimbey scrambled

to regain their composure and refocus their team. The game came back to a seven point Rimbey lead in the fourth quarter when a leader was born. The aforementioned Greer-Schallock came off the bench and rallied her team around her and the Lady Spartans took back control of the game, winning by double digits. Game- Set- Match. Mission accomplished. Let the celebrations begin. A good junior high team wins a game with somewhere in the range of 30-40 points. A really good team occasionally scores in the high 40s. For this team to beat these caliber of teams by these margins was phenomenal. Congratulations on all your accomplishments, ladies. You did yourselves proud, you did your families proud, you did your school proud and you did your community proud. Enjoy the moment. Stand tall, walk proud, and hopefully success and greatness is with you for the rest of your lives. I’ve been told that the high school lady Spartans are graduating only one Grade 12 player from a 13 player roster. There are six Grade 9 players moving up from this fantastic junior high team. Basketball fans in the Rimbey area should mark January to March down on your calendars to watch the Rimbey Spartan ladies basketball team. It’s shaping up to be a stellar season. Spartans rule!

There was a good variety of imaginative costumes entered into the fun costume contest. The winning team was the “Aunt Jemima’s” with Jeannine Siebold, Candace Wilson, Mary Jo McPherson and J’lyn Bickford. There was a “doubles board” and a “hog rock pot” adding to the fun. NORSTROM, LaVerne Dorothy On Thursday March 17, 2016 Mrs. LaVerne Dorothy Norstrom of Edmonton formerly of Rimbey passed away suddenly at the age of 72. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Harvey Norstrom, three sons Arvid, Noel and Patty, Jason. She also will be remembered by two grandchildren and one great-grandchildren; Brittani and Chris, and precious great-granddaughter, Trystan, Steffani and James; her brother and two sisters; Fred and Susan, Doris and LaVern, Joan and Rod, and her very special and cherished nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Shorty and Laurene Fawcett, brother Glendon Fawcett and her son Neal. LaVerne was born the oldest daughter of Laurene and Shorty Fawcett, a farm family that instilled in her the love of family and the countryside that endured her entire life. She married Harvey Norstrom on February 2, 1962 and later as a young wife and mother she moved to the city but continued to return to the family farm every chance she had. In her younger years LaVerne worked in various retail establishments until the birth of her precious twin grand-daughters. She never hesitated to brag about and tell stories as she watched her “girlies grow”. March 18, 2014 a new twinkle was brought to LaVerne’s eye with the birth of her great-granddaughter, Trystan. Her smiles, giggles and smooches never failed to bring happiness to Gramma Vern. Her garden and flowers brought her many hours of enjoyment in the summer. In winter she enjoyed, knitting, crocheting, and watching curling. You could tell how curling was going by how many mistakes she made. LaVerne spent many hours volunteering at S.E.E.S.A, all while she was able, then spent time doing various activities there and with her Monday lunch and “crafty ladies” In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the South East Edmonton Seniors Association (S.E.E.S.A.) Raise the Roof Campaign or Alberta Diabetes Association. PARK PLACE FUNERAL HOME
