ike the phoenix, one of Cranbrook’s most notable and lovely heritage buildings has emerged from the ashes of a 2013 fire, and will be taking part in the local economy as a new antique store. The rejuvenation of the Elko Station, sitting at the corner of Van Horne Street and King Street, is due to the efforts of the Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmarks Foundation, and the generosity of local volunteers and businesses. “This building has great potential,” said Don Langvand, owner of Dragon Antiques on 10th Avenue South downtown. “I’ve been eyeing it for a while.” Langvand said the new store — named, appropriately enough, “Phoenix Antiques” — will be different from the current location in downtown Cranbrook, but will still display vintage pieces, with more of a focus on “guy stuff” than the downtown store, and pieces displayed outside in balmy weather. Both Langvand and Balfour agree an antique store is a great
addition to the complex that is the Canadian History Centre, and along with the eye-catching, freshly painted vintage locomotive, will go enhance it as a tourist attraction. This week, Langvand brought a mint condition 1918 grain wagon to the site, which is now on display between the station and the locomotive. The Elko station is a “Crowsnest B” type station, and the only one of its kind left in North America. It was assembled in 1901, from a kit shipped to Elko. Balfour said in those days, Canadian Pacific surveyed its towns along the way to determine what kind of station needed, and Elko got the Class B type. The building — in kit form — was shipped out in numbered pieces, which were assembled in Elko in 1901. The 2,000-square-foot building was moved the 54 miles to Cranbrook 86 years later. The highway was closed to traffic for that job, and power poles were even removed to make room. The station was settled on the existing foundation of another
ancient building, and served as the first headquarteres for the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel (now the Canadian History Centre). In the intervening years, the Elko Station as been headquarters to the Cranbrook Community Foundation and to Blue Beetle Creative Media. The low point for the building came in July of 2013, when it was set on fire. Balfour said the insulation helped slow the fire enough to save the building, and the fire department quickly put it out, but smoke damage was extensive, and some of the walls were charcoaled. Pigeons also made their home in the damaged rafters afterwards, filling the space with their guano. But it’s been a labour of love over the past two years, and that labour has paid off, with a beautifully renovated heritage building. “What’s cool about it is we couldn’t have done it without contributions from the community,” Balfour said.

Dr. Stefanie Falz returns from “rewarding” sojourn at Médicins Sans Frontières hospital in South Sudan TRE VOR CR AWLEY
In
a refugee camp of 120,000 in the South Sudan, a local doctor has been working for the last six months as a volunteer with Doctors without Borders. Dr. Stefanie Falz, who has been working at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for the last eight years, recently returned from South Sudan after working and volunteering at a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital. South Sudan is the newest country
in the world, gaining it’s independence from Sudan in 2011, however, it has been mired in conflict stemming from a civil war that erupted two years later between government and rebel military forces. Dr. Falz went through the application process, including a week of training on security issues, managing stress in the field and managing personnel before she was accepted and sent to Bentiu in South Sudan.

In a time where everything is changing, to keep up with the times, everything must change. There is a fine balance between keeping some things the way they have always been done, and constantly changing to ensure that a business stays vital to the community. Many businesses have come and gone, while others have come to stay. The oldest business that has been in the same location longer even than the post office or city hall is The Kimberley City Bakery, which has been in the same location for 94 years. They say they
have done this by keeping up with the times. From a little bakery to provide for the Sullivan Mine to providing Wholesale breads to grocery stores, golf courses, restaurants, coffee shops, and even with an outlet store in Cranbrook back in the day. Before the current owners, Eric and Michelle Forbes took over, the bakery was following the latest trend of moving to using mixes, like 99% of other bakeries, but under new management, everything is now baked from scratch daily. “Baking from scratch is what sets us apart,” Forbes reveals. “Baking from mixes or bringing

in frozen product is obviously easier, but if you have the skilled staff, the difference in taste is worth the extra time and effort.” In fact, the extra effort put in brings people on a regular basis from Invermere, Fernie, Calgary, Edmonton, and even Idaho. Forbes says that the steady increase in business has caused them to switch their focus from wholesale and retail to more of the retail focus. The Kimberley City Bakery has been looking for new and innovative ways of doing things since taking over. They have imported a leavener from Italy to make their own yeast, created their own recipe for the traditional French croissant, added croissant donut hybrids (Fritssant), croissant muffin hybr ids (Kouign Amanns), Pretzel crois-

says Cristina Atkinson of Calgary, Alberta. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked down the Platzl in the evening and wished that I could have something from the bakery. Now I’ll be able to satisfy my cravings whenever I want!” Jack Therrieux of Cranbrook was the first to try the machine. “I was able to grab my loaf of bread on the go. It was really easy,” he stated. The bakery will still have tables available inside during the day, although the front counter staff will be retrained in different positions in the bakery. “We will be able to keep up with the demand with our current staff members, while making it easier for both staff and customers,” Forbes says. They believe that this innovative technology will help the bakery stay current and continue focusing on making the best baked goods possible.

A doctor without borders in South Sudan Continued from page 1 “I’ve wanted to work with MSF for a long time, probably since I applied to go to medical school, which is a few years ago now,” said Dr. Falz. “It’s always been on my to-do list, but the timing has always been a bit challenging because I knew for their first mission, they expect you to commit to 6-12 months, and to take that kind of time out of your life is challenging. “But last year felt like the right time to go.” She’s been to Africa before as a med student years ago, spending 10 weeks in Tanzania, so the culture shock and the expectations of the conditions she’d be working in weren’t too unfamiliar. However, as an emergency medicine specialist, she handled all kinds of medical situations, with the majority of her patients being children. In fact, the camp, with a population of 120,000 within 2.2 square kilometres, included 40,000 children that were under the age of five years old. “The greatest need is mostly children,” Dr. Falz said. “It’s another unimaginable number, but out of the 120,000 people living in this camp, 40,000 are children under five [years old] which is just mind-boggling. “A large, large part of what we were doing is paediatrics. Children under five are the most vulnerable too, they tend to die from things like diarrhea and malaria more so than adults do, so just by default I kind of became a paediatrician.” The hospital facilities, operated and managed by MSF, were just one part of services provided by roughly 40 Non-Government Organizations (NGO) that also included the likes of International Rescue Committee, World Re-
lief and UNICEF under the protection of United Nations military forces. Arriving in October, Dr. Falz hit the rainy season, which turned the ground into mud. Temperatures reached as high as 42-44 degrees Celsius, but dipped to 18 degrees in December and January, which was enough to be a factor in causing cases of pneumonia for the local population. The hospital, spread out over a series of tents, had an operating room, an inpatient therapeutic feeding centre, 160 beds and a staff comprised of close to 500 local South Sudanese and 40 expats. “It’s unfortunately, in it’s short life, this country has already experienced a lot of conflict and so there isn’t a lot of functioning infrastructure in the entire country,” Dr. Falz said. “MSF and other organizations basically constitute the health care system of South Sudan to speak of at this time, so it’s a place where MSF does a lot of work now.” Much of Dr. Falz’s experience was based in the UN camp, however, she also managed to get out for a few mobile clinics and spent three weeks within the Bentiu townsite proper. “A lot of it was destroyed, so when you drive around Bentiu town, you can tell it was a pretty nice town at one point, there were parks and a basketball court that was still standing and traffic lights,” she said. “It seemed like it was a pretty nice place, but now it was completely destroyed. There were overturned cars everywhere, the houses were mostly gone, so there were lots of empty space with cattle running around.” Malaria, malnutrition, pneumonia and diarrheal illnesses were the most common medical situations that re-

of medical issues because they are highly treatable. However, there were times where Dr. Falz and the staff were heartbro-
ken over seeing other patients—mostly children, die from any number of medical conditions. In 14 years of practice
in North America, Dr. Falz only recalls one of her paediatric patients who passed away. In the first week at Bentiu, three had passed away.
“You ask yourself what you are doing wrong—this doesn’t just happen, this never happens in Canada where kids just die,” Dr. Falz said. “You’re trying to beat yourself up, looking for mistakes you made and how you can prevent it. “Then you realize after a while that there are so many things at play there that you have no control over and so you actually see a lot of—not just kids—but a lot of people dying, but especially the children, that was really, really hard. “We had three kids die of rabies which is absolutely horrible to watch and there’s nothing you can do to prevent that death. You can alleviate their suffering, but you cannot prevent their death because there’s no cure or treatment for it.” However, amidst the misery and the suffering, there were good things to pull from the experience, such as bonding with the local staff and expat volunteers and providing vital health care services that South Sudanese people simply would not have access to if MSF wasn’t there. The local staff were very keen on learning new things as well, and Dr. Falz and other medical experts would often hold sessions to teach them a new skill or medical concept. “MSF hires people from all over the world so I really enjoyed working with people from countries all over the world,” Dr. Falz said. “We’d have a surgeon from Rwanda, a nurse from England, a logistician from Holland, so it was really, really interesting just working with people from such a broad background and now I feel like I have friends in almost every corner of the world, which is definitely pretty cool.”

The annual Spring Splash celebration goes this weekend
CAROLYN GRANT
It’s the best of times and the worst of times. The best of times because there is nothing more fun than the Spring Splash weekend at Kimberley Alpine Resort; and the worst of times because it means skiing is over for another year — except for those hardy souls who continue to hike the hill until there is no more snow. In any event, it is time for Kimberley Alpine Resort’s biggest party. It will follow the same schedule as every year, the splash pond on Saturday, the Dummy Downhill on Sunday; live music, big crowds and fun, fun, fun. And new this year, the
Resort is offering heli-sightseeing flights. Five seats are available per flight, at $139.95 plus tax per person. That gives you a 15 minute flight over KAR and Kimberley. Spring Splash gets started on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the plaza with a barbecue and beer gardens, photo booth, plaza games, free facepainting and more, although if you want to register for the splash pond, registration opens at 9 a.m. Live music with Mile High Club begins at noon and Spring Splash events, including the splash pond, begin at 2:15 p.m. Awards will be presented at 4:45 p.m. At 5 p.m. there’s more live
music with Jory Kinjo and the Static and then at 7 p.m Oak Republic plays at the Stemwinder. On Sunday, April 3, registration for the Dummy Downhill begins at 9 a.m. The barbecue and beer gardens open at 11 a.m. Live music begins with Lucas Hanny and The Fable Hoppers. The Dummy Downhill begins at 3 p.m. with awards at 4 p.m. The Good Ol’ Goats perform at 4:30 p.m. The Resort is reporting spring skiing conditions with great coverage, so come on up and take a few final runs and watch, or take part in, all the Spring Splash festivities.

ouveau Voyage Aux Isles de l’Amerique’ (New Trip to the Islands of America) is a striking yet not uncommon example of censorship in 18th century France. First published in 1722, the book’s full title is ‘Nouveau Voyage Aux Isles de l’Amerique: Contenant L’histoire Naturelle de Ces Pays, L’origine, Les Mœurs, La Religion & Le Gouvernement Des Habitans Anciens & Modernes. Les Guerres & Les Evenemens Singuliers Qui Y Sont Arrivez Pendant Le Long Sejour Que L’auteur Y a Fait. Le Commerce & Les Manufactures Qui Y Sont établies, & Les Moyens de Les Augmenter. Avec Une Description Exacte & Curieuse de Toutes Ces Isles. Ouvrage Enrichi de plus de Cent Cartes, Plans, & Figures En Tailles-Douces’ This massive title takes up most of the entire title page. Below this, in what little room is left, is printed “A Paris: rue S. Jacques, chez Pierre-François Giffart, près la ruë des Mathurins, à l’image Sainte Therese, 1722.” Here we have the name of not only the publisher/bookseller (Giffart), but also the street address of shop. House numbers hadn’t made there way onto S. Jacques street, so Giffart’s shop was the one with the image of Saint Theresa displayed out front. Squeezed below this is smaller print is the statement “With Approbation & Privilege of the King.” The King’s endorsement was only the first of five marks of state-sponsored censorship. The book’s front matter lists four more lengthy endorsements by different royal censors. Besides the King’s stamp, statements praising the book have been written by two professors, a priest, and another bookseller. All used complimentary language, calling the work “fascinating,” “useful,” and “impossible to put down.”
BOOKNOTES
Mike Selby All this is very strange — shouldn’t censors be ripping out offensive language and suggestive imagery, not heaping admiration upon a work? Two things can explain this phenomenon. The first is the word “privilege,” associated above with the King. At this time in history, privilege was reserved for the high-born class of people. As French historian Robert Darnton has noted, “all men (and all the more women) were born unequal. The idea of equality before the law was unthinkable for most Europeans.” This upper-class of people needed an upper-class of books to read, so the “Privilege of the King” stamp was created to assure exactly this. The second was the nature of the censors themselves. Far from being the modern stereotype of an uptight zealot removing books from the shelves of the local library, the royal censors during the first half of the 18th century were all literary men — what England called at the time “men of letters.” Far from excising objectionable writing, France’s censors were more concerned with promoting great books. More often than not they collaborated with authors, hoping to create a publishable product. There first concern was promoting French books, not censoring them. Of course not every book submitted to the censors earned the King’s Privilege. In fact, most books would not. This problem was even
recognized by the King’s own director of the book trade, who stated “a man who reads only books that originally appear with the explicit sanction of the government, as the law prescribes, would be behind his contemporaries by nearly a century.” Fortunately for the majority of French literature, the censors devised a way around the King’s Privilege. Instead of a series of written endorsements, a censor could issue a “tacit permission” — an approved stamp of non-approval. This allowed a book to be published and sold, but without any royal endorsement. “I think there is no risk in tolerating its printing and that it can be published with a tacit permission,” one censor wrote, “although the public will hardly be flattered by a present of this sort.” Other works could circumvent the censors entirely, by simply having permission from a policeman to publicly sell a work. An unstable arrangement at best, as the permission could be revoked at any time. There were also pirated works which sold outside the law. At this point in history the term censor carried no negative connotations with it. A royal censor was an unpaid side occupation, but one that looked nice on a person’s resume. It wasn’t until the late 18th century, when the belief that everyone had a right to freedom of expression began to be bandied about, that the term“censor” began to be frowned upon. If anyone is wondering, ‘Nouveau Voyage Aux Isles de l’Amerique’ was written by Jean Baptiste-Labat. His name doesn’t appear until sometime after the book’s preface; the author was no where near as important as the censor. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

A concerned citizen is reporting that urban deer have been found wandering the old mine shafts at the Sullivan site up in Kimberley. According to a government spokesperson, the deer were malnourished, but happy to be found as they pranced back out into the light. This concerned citizen, who wished to remain anonymous, noted that 20 deer were found in the mineshaft — the same number that were recently captured as part of an urban deer translocation study. “I can’t help but wonder, are these the same deer that were captured in the translocation trial?” asked the man. “I know Cranbrook and Kimberley have been complaining about their urban deer problem, but translocating them into a mineshaft feels like it’s sweeping the issue under the rug.” An official at Kimberley city hall confirmed that the deer were moved into the mineshaft in an effort to prevent damage to local property. “The deer have been destroying backyard veggie plots and a herd has been camped out feeding at Cominco Gardens,” said the official, who only agreed to speak on the condition
of anonymity. “It’s been so bad that city council is currently debating if it’d be easier to shut down the Gardens to save all the money they’re pouring into it because of what the deer are doing!” The same official noted that translocating
the deer to a winter range didn’t make sense because they’d likely end up wandering back into town. Translocating them to the mine shafts serves two purposes— the deer are not culled, as public pressure has forced officials to pursue non-lethal actions,
while relocating them to mine shafts will keep them disoriented and their escape unlikely. “Out of sight, out of mind,” said the official. If you’ve continued reading this far, fear not, because this entire story is fake. Happy April Fools Day!

Judas Asparagus and the Joy of Easter
S
ome ancient Christian imagery shows the risen Christ confronting the devil and laughing at him. Part of the lore of Easter is that God played a joke on Satan by raising Jesus from the dead. This old Christian custom celebrated the day after Easter as Bright Monday, a day to laugh and frolic and delight in the good news of resurrection life, a day of joy and laughter. Risus paschalis (the Easter laugh), the early theologians called it. We’re not completely sure about the origins of the custom, but it may be inspired by a sermon from 4th century Greek preacher John Chrysostom, who envisioned the resurrected Christ laughing at the devil. An old adage has it that the devil can’t stand the sound of laughter and slinks away from it. G.K. Chesterton once wrote: “Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly. Never forget that the devil fell by force of gravity. He who has the faith has the fun.” In the spirit of Bright Monday, and in honour of April 1, I offer this take on the Bible by an 8–year–old: In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God, darkness, and some gas. The Bible says, “The Lord thy God is one, but I think He must be a lot older than that.” Anyway, God said, “Give me a light!” and someone did. Then God made the world. He split the Adam and made Eve. Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren’t embarrassed because mirrors hadn’t been invented yet. Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating one bad apple, so they were driven
from the Garden of Eden. I’m not sure what they were driven in though, because they didn’t have cars. Adam and Eve had a son, Cain, who hated his brother as long as he was Abel. Pretty soon all of the early people died off, except for Methuselah, who lived to be like a million or something. One of the next important people was Noah, who was a good guy, but one of his kids was kind of a Ham. Noah built a large boat and put his family and some animals on it. He asked some other people to join him, but they said they would have to take a rain check. After Noah came Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Rev. Yme Jacob was more famous Woensdregt than his brother, Esau, because Esau sold Jacob his birthmark in exchange for some pot roast. Jacob had a son named Joseph who wore a really loud sports coat. Another important Bible guy is Moses, whose real name was Charlton Heston. Moses led the Israel Lights out of Egypt and away from the evil Pharaoh after God sent ten plagues on Pharaoh’s people. These plagues included frogs, mice, lice, bowels, and no cable. God fed the Israel Lights every day with manicotti. Then he gave them His Top Ten Commandments. These include: don’t lie, cheat, smoke, dance, or covet your neighbour’s stuff. Oh, yeah, I just thought of one more: Humor thy father and thy mother. One of Moses’ best helpers was Joshua who was the first Bible guy to use spies. Joshua fought the battle of Geritol and the fence fell over on the town. After Joshua came David. e got to be
king by killing a giant with a slingshot. He had a son named Solomon who had about 300 wives and 500 porcupines. My teacher says he was wise, but that doesn’t sound very wise to me. After Solomon there were a bunch of major league prophets. One of these was Jonah, who was swallowed by a big whale and then barfed up on the shore. There were also some minor league prophets, but I guess we don’t have to worry about them. After the Old Testament came the New Testament. Jesus is the star of The New. He was born in Bethlehem in a barn. (I wish I had been born in a barn too, because my mom is always saying to me, ‘Close the door! Were you born in a barn?’ It would be nice to say, ‘As a matter of fact, I was.’) During His life, Jesus had many arguments with sinners like the Pharisees and the Democrats. Jesus also had twelve opossums. The worst one was Judas Asparagus. Judas was so evil that they named a terrible vegetable after him. Jesus was a great man. He heled many leopards and even preached to some Germans on the Mount. But the Democrats and all those guys put Jesus on trial before Pontius the Pilot. Pilot didn’t stick up for Jesus. He just washed his hands instead. Anyways, Jesus died for our sins, then came back to life again. He went up to Heaven but will be back at the end of the Aluminum. His return is foretold in the book of Revolution. May you delight in the risus paschalis. Happy Easter. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Then & Now
Jim Cameron
A
large and curious crowd gathered in the Wentworth Hall on Baker Street in Cranbrook on the evening of June 8, 1905. It was a lecture and demonstration of the newest technological advance in communications: wireless telegraphy recently invented by Guglielmo Marconi. “The Wentworth hall was standing room only with many others gathered outside anxious to catch even a word now and then of the interesting lecture that was delivered by Mr. H. G. Robinson. Through the efforts of local entrepreneur John Hutchison, representatives of the Marconi Company arrived in town and installed two machines, the same as those used on board 68 steamship companies and land stations of the company. For two hours the crowd was held spellbound by the story of Marconi and the theory, practical application and demonstration of wireless telegraphy ... although no special effort was made to sell stock the demand has been very heavy and the amount sold ...was large.” Landline telegraphy had by that time been in common use for many years utilizing a code system developed in the 1830s by American portrait painter and inventor Samuel Morse. During any period of time between then and the 1950s, if you wished to send a message to someone and (after 1876) you didn’t have a telephone, then the quickest way to do it would be by telegraph. It’s actually much like the present-day system of “texting” except you had to have someone that knew what they were doing with an electric transmitter tap it out to someone who knew what they were doing with a receiver. The dots

The same location today at the west end of Baker Street. Cameron, March 2016 and dashes would then be translated into letters to form words to be printed on a telegram and delivered to your door by a messenger. It was fast, accurate and relatively expensive. Words were at a premium and thus the messages tended to be terse. “UNCLE HENRY DEAD” or “ARRIVING TODAY THREE TEN FROM YUMA BRING GUNS” or other such tidings. Notice the use of capitals. Telegraphy did not distinguish between upper and lower-case so the translation tended to be written in capitals making EVERY MESSAGE APPEAR IMPORTANT. Due to the fact that Morse code relies solely on the use of dots and dashes, punctuation was nonexistent. For instance, a dot cannot be a period because it is the letter “E,” while a hyphen (or “dash”) is the letter “T.” In essence, dots and dashes are bursts of electronically generated noise. A “dot” is the shortest noise, a “dash”

is three dots long and the space between words is 5 or 7 dots, depending on the system in use as, for example, the title of this article, which is Morse code for “THE TELEGRAPH.” Telegraphers of both sexes mastered the system with amazing accuracy and speed and for many years the Cranbrook Telegraph Office was under the capable management of ladies who could dot and dash with the best of them. And so it was, as the smoking, soot-covered, lumbering iron beasts began rolling into town on the spotless rails in August of 1898, they brought with them not only commerce but communication, for where went the Canadian Pacific Railway, there went the telegraph, a single copper wire riding the rough, limbless poles of technology connecting the forsaken to civilisation. The townsfolk eagerly marked the advance of real-time contact with the outside world. By, August, 1898, there was
a temporary telegraph office located in a tent near the trestle two miles from town. “Poles are being set across the prairie and the line will be in town this evening,” exclaimed the Herald. The Cranbrook Townsite Company — consisting of the CPR and V. Hyde Baker, son of town-founder James Baker — had plans for a new office at the west end of Baker Street on the north side. Plans that would not see the light of day until April, 1909, when construction began on a building located just west of the original fire hall (itself just west of the present day Cranbrook Photo building on Baker Street). The CPR wasted no time in having the B.C. Land Department/Telegraph Office erected; it was up in under a month. The Herald proclaimed: “The Canadian Pacific Railway company have put up a building ... that coming generations will look at with pride and bless the name of the Canadian
Pacific Railway company. “If Christopher Wren were alive, the architectural beauties of this wonderful building would make the designer of St. Paul’s Cathedral green with jealousy. The scheme is distinctly Gothic in treatment; with a touch of Old Spanish or Moorish arches about it, especially the roof, of which the tiles are very artistic. Corinthian columns decorate the portico, which is flanked by beautiful plate glass windows. The interior decorations are in keeping with the general theme. The mosaic floors and walls make this one of the most beautiful office buildings in the west. The cost will be about two hundred and fifty dollars. W.R. Beatty has the contract.” Have another look at the picture and see if you caught all that. The CPR controlled much of the town at the time but the description is completely over the top even for the newspaper of the day. Tongue in cheek? Sarcasm? Blatant fawning? Hard to say. Nonetheless, it was a sturdy, rather appealing building, constructed amazingly cheaply by William Beatty, the local undertaker. It served its purpose as the commercial public telegraph office — the CPR maintained a private line at the station — until June, 1920, when a new building, boasting little to make anyone jealous, was constructed about half a block south on Van Horne street and remained in use for the next four decades as telegraph communications gradually became teletyping and then became obsolete. The old telegraph office/land department office, a catch-all for numerous businesses over the years, disappeared in the 1960s, as with many of its neighbouring downtown buildings that were either demolished, fell to flames or maimed into the architectural submission of modern fashion. “... A building that coming generations will look at with pride ...” Well, for a couple of generations, at least.

Wranglers defeat Nitros, take title Taylor Rocca Sports Editor
100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — The 100 Mile House Wranglers are the 2016 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League champions. Thursday night at the South Cariboo Rec Centre in 100 Mile House, the Wranglers claimed a nail-biting 2-1 victory in Game 5 of the league championship to claim the best-of-seven series by a 4-1 margin and advance to the Cyclone Taylor Cup for the first time in club history. If there’s one thing you can say about the Kimberley Dynamiters, it’s that they never gave up. To the outside eye, the Dynamiters are quite simply a junior hockey team. To an inside eye, the Dynamiters are nothing short of a tightknit family. Heavily favoured heading into the post-season after finishing as the regular-season kings of the KIJHL, a black and blue Dynamiters squad stuck together — as families work so hard to do — and left every ounce of everything they had out on the ice Thursday night. “It’s a tough night,” said Jerry Bancks, head coach of the Kimberley Dynamiters, Thursday. “We gave it all we had. It’s a happy/sad night. I’m very sad because I won’t be able to see them as often as I have and have these good times together. “For us to win the league was a pretty amazing thing. To do as well as we did in the playoffs was incredible. We definitely know we could have done this. We didn’t get it done. “All you can do is thank [the players] and tell them how much you respect them. They’re family. Once a Dynamiter, always a Dynamiter. My door will always be open for any one of them.” The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie through 40 minutes, with Brett Harris opening the scoring for the Wranglers and Eric Buckley responding for the Dynamiters.
The 100 MIle House Wranglers defeated the Kimberley Dynamiters 2-1 Thursday night to take the KIJHL Championship. Then, with only 3:57 remaining in regulation, 21-year-old Prince Rupert native Brady Ward sunk the final dagger into the hearts of the Dynamiters to give the Wranglers a 2-1 lead, which they locked down en route to the first league championship in team history. “It feels fantastic,” said Dale Hladun, head coach of the 100 Mile House Wranglers. “When you have to play such a good team like Kimberley and with how well our kids played against such a good club, I’m even prouder of our guys. “Kimberley — they were not quitting. They were relentless. It was a good series. Any fans that didn’t manage to come out to any of these games, too bad. Because that was good hockey.” Between the pipes, Zane Steeves was once again lights out, turning aside 40 of a 41-shot barrage from the Nitros. “Zane, I was excited we got him and I was surprised he was even in our league,” Hladun said. “I believe as a 20-year-old next year, he will find a Junior A opportunity. If there isn’t a team in Junior A taking Zane, then they’re silly. “You saw what he did. He’s a good goalie and there was a lot of pressure. Kimberley just came in waves and he
stood them up. I think 100 Mile should enjoy was they just saw here, because I don’t think Zane will be with us next year.” At the other end, Tyson Brouwer was in MVP form as well, making 30 saves. Harris opened the scoring with a first period power-play tally. With Trey Doell serving a hooking minor, it didn’t take long for the Wranglers to set up shop on the man advantage. Taking the puck at the point, Austin Turner fired a long, low shot that Harris redirect past Brouwer to give the home team a 1-0 lead with 7:46 remaining in the first period. The Doell penalty and consequential Harris goal followed an opening half to the period that saw the Dynamiters dominate zone time. But as has been the case all series, Steeves was Johnny on the spot with the glove, keeping things relatively quiet at his end of the rink. Yanked after allowing three goals on 18 shots in Game 4, Brouwer was back in top-notch form to start Game 5. His best save of the period came off a short-handed breakaway opportunity for Ryan Friesen. Jumping an errant pass at the Wranglers blueline, Friesen burst in all on Brouwer, only to have
the door slammed in his face. Tyler Povelofskie was in the crosshairs of the officials from the first puck drop. After taking a goalie interference penalty, the pesky 19-yearold forward then tripped up Eric Buckley, giving the Dynamiters their second man advantage of the evening with less than 45 seconds remaining in the first period. A back-and-forth second period saw more great opportunities for both clubs. Looking for his second of the night, Harris went outside-in on Devon Langelaar to get in tight on Brouwer, but once again, the Nitros regular season MVP wasn’t about to let anything through. At the other end, Steeves remained active with both the glove and blocker, rejecting attempts from Jason Richter and Keenan Haase. With time winding down in the second period, the Dynamiters grabbed a turnover in neutral ice and turned play the other way. Walking over the blueline 3-on-2, Buckley took a drop pass before raising into the high slot and beating Steeves low to tie the game 1-1 with 2:02 to go in the second period. The Wranglers came out with good jump to start the third period,
bringing out the MVP in Brouwer. First, a long point shot was redirected from close range and labelled for the top corner. With cat-like reflexes, the 5-foot-11 native of Lethbridge shot out the glove hand, getting just enough of the rubber to send it wide of the cage. Then, with 12 minutes remaining in the 1-1 game, Brouwer kicked out the left toe on another glorious opportunity in tight to keep his team deadlocked with a pressing Wranglers squad. Still haven’t had enough? With time winding down, Tyler Povelofskie sent a hot shot in on net. Brouwer made the first save but the rebound popped straight up in the air above the crease. With a mass of humanity crashing in on him, the Eddie Mountain Division Goaltender of the Year managed to bat the rebound out of mid-air with the paddle of his stick, once again negating another big opportunity for the hosts. Then Ward struck. “[Stephen] Egan somehow got it down low off a chip in,” Ward said, recalling his championship-clinching marker. “He came around below the goal line there and I decided to come down later. He found me.
“It’s just unreal. I can’t even put it into words right now what it’s like. As a 20-bomb, it’s the best feeling in the world to win it all. I can’t even put it into words. “We’re just a big bunch of tough guys from the north that just love to bang bodies. That’s the way we play our game. Wrangler hockey is the hard way. Yeah, we take penalties for the type of players we are, but we always bounce back.” In true Kimberley Dynamiters form, the visitors refused to quit. Brouwer vacated the cage for the extra attacker at a timeout with 1:34 remaining in regulation. Off a face-off win deep in Wrangler territory, Jordan Busch sent a point shot that ricocheted like a ping-pong ball — up and down off the ice surface — before seemingly hitting Steeves in the shoulder. The rebound came to Eric Buckley at the side of the net, but as he did all series long, Steeves was there to leave everyone in the arena scrambling to scrape their jaws off the floor as he booted out the right leg to make an incredible, game-saving stop. And then the final buzzer sounded, bringing an end to an incredible season of Kimberley Dynamiters hockey.

Finishing the regular season with a marvellous record of 41-7-0-4, the Kimberley Dynamiters claimed the Eddie Mountain Division title, Kootenay Conference title and KIJHL regular-season crown for their supremacy through 52 games. From there, as it always is at any level of hockey, the challenge of repeating as post-season heroes was more challenging than anything else short of winning it the first time around. “I wanted so bad to bring it home Saturday night,” Bancks said. “Just because I know the energy of the fans maybe would have made up for Justin Meier being out and Brodie Buhler. We would’ve been fine. But we had to win one here. In all honestly, I thought it might be the third one because of our fitness. “I wanted to get it back to the fans so much. It’s alive. The word is out there. It’s the place to play and Kimberley can be very proud — the executive, the people that volunteer their time that put it all together — these kids get treated very well. “The Kimberley Dynamiters are alive and well. I just want to thank all the people making the trip from Cranbrook, too. It’s pretty cool. And I will go out of my way to see that it continues.”

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) Try to hold back and discipline the prankster that lives within you. Not everyone enjoys April Fools’ shenanigans. Maintain an aboveboard stance as you tackle certain responsibilities. A friend will manage to get your attention later in the day. Tonight: Among the crowds. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have the ability to take in the big picture. As you do this sometime today, you might decide to split the scene. Whatever seems to have been bothering you is likely to pass. Make it OK to start your weekend early. Tonight: Follow someone else’s lead. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Keep reaching out to someone at a distance. Your ability to incorporate others into your plans might be based on the quality of your personal interactions with each person. You tend to develop a great deal of confidence in those around you. Tonight: Be willing to have some fun.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Has it occurred to you that people’s attitudes colors their perceptions? One person can see a situation as incredibly challenging, while someone else could decide that the same situation is an obstacle that is there for a reason and split. Resist having a knee-jerk reaction. Tonight: Out late. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You seem insistent on completing certain errands quickly. Don’t react to a potential misunderstanding; a meeting of the minds seems to be flawed at the moment. Maintain a kind and open attitude with everyone you meet today. Tonight: Happy to be out and about. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your world could be opening up to a different type of excitement or more creative ideas. Know that it is natural to be hesitant before jumping into a new venture. How will you know the outcome unless you are willing to take a risk? Tonight: Meet friends to celebrate the weekend. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Tundra
All’s well that ends well. You might have to jump through hoops today, and you could stumble a little. Remain upbeat, and don’t take momentary confusion -- or mixed messages -too seriously. Tonight: Jump right into the weekend. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You often can be very serious. When you sense a misunderstanding, you are capable of copping an attitude. Be open to an error, or know that maybe you and the other party have different attachments to words. Make a call later in the day. Tonight: Meet up with a pal. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might be more concerned with your finances than you are willing to let on. Verify your own situation before you worry about anything else. Count your change carefully today; you will be a lot happier if you do. Tonight: Take a quick nap before you head out. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could be focused on completing a lot before the end of the day. You won’t take kindly to distractions. You will want to
get through as much as you can. Others might already be in weekend mode and have difficulty changing their focus. Tonight: Out, but only if you want to. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Take the day for you. You might need to get your taxes done or get some extra sleep. You need some personal time, not distracted by calls, friends, etc. A friend or loved one could get into a tizzy looking for you. Reach out to this person when you’re ready. Tonight: Paint the town red. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Zero in on priorities for your professional life, and complete them as early as you can. Friends might be knocking on your door or texting you with invitations. You will be happy to deal with your social life once you clear out responsibilities. Tonight: Where the action is. BORN TODAY U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Alito (1950), actress Debbie Reynolds (1932), TV host Rachel Maddow (1973) ***

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My sister-in-law is going through dialysis. She is able to do it in the comfort of her home with help of a nurse, so she can be close to her young kids. Her husband dotes on her. She isn’t able to get out much, but she tries to see my in-laws for supper or coffee whenever possible. My husband and I make an effort to come over to say hi and be supportive, plus our kids love seeing their cousins. The problem is, whenever I ask her how she is doing, she says something dark like, “I’m still alive, but why would any of you care?” Last week, she said she is going to get a motorcycle because she’s going to die anyway. If you try to steer the conversation to something lighter, she drives it right back to her illness. I offered to help with her cleaning, and to read her a book while she is getting treatment and give her a foot massage. She told my mother-in-law that I was “showing off ” and stopped speaking to me. My husband calls her an emotional vampire. Annie, I have suffered from depression for years. I go to regular meetings with a peer group, take a good medication and have the full support of my husband. When I am around my sister-in-law, my own dark feelings go to a place that I don’t like, and I once came home from seeing her and contemplated suicide. I also don’t want my 12-year-old, who already shows signs of depression, to be near my sisterin-law. My mother-in-law won’t let me say anything to her about it. How do I handle this situation without breaking my mother-in-law’s heart? -- Going Crazy Dear Going Crazy: Your sister-in-law is terribly depressed, as you know, and feels so sorry for herself that she cannot see beyond her own unhappiness. But you should not compromise your health in order to be supportive of someone else. Make your visits brief, and let your husband go without you when it gets too difficult. Don’t try to cheer her up. She only wants to vent. And when she rebuffs your offers of help, ignore it. She is not capable of appreciating the kindness of others. We also suggest you check out the National Kidney Foundation (kidney.org) for additional suggestions and insight. Dear Annie: We have been married 58 years, are in our mid-80s and happy, reasonable healthy and financially secure. On birthdays and Christmas, we always give monetary gifts to the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Two of the grandchildren never acknowledge this with a “thank you” or even a phone call. I say, “It’s time to close the bank.” My husband says, “It doesn’t matter, because we have the money, and they can use it.” To send or not to send -- that is the question. We have decided to abide by your advice. -- The Bank of Grandpa and Grandma Dear Bank: You are certainly justified in stopping, but we say, give them the chance to learn: Tell the two reprobates directly that that there will be no more gifts unless they let you know, via note, email, text or phone call, that they were received. Otherwise, you will assume they do not appreciate your generosity and you will stop. You’ll feel better knowing that the final decision was theirs. Cranbrook Chamber swears in new Board of Directors F o r t h e Tow n s ma n
The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce has a new Board of Directors effective April 1. 11 Chamber members sworn in by Mayor Lee Pratt at the annual general meeting March 30 will form the newly minted board chaired by Chris Thom. The previous board served an extended 15 month term to accommodate changes to the Chamber bylaws to separate the fiscal year and the governance year. The new bylaws facilitating this change, and the reduction of the board from 15 to 11 members, were passed by the membership last September. After the gavel passing ceremony from outgoing president Dave Struthers incoming president Chris Thom commented, “I am really looking forward to a
great year. We have an excellent board and great staff. The Chamber will continue to work diligently to build business and community.” The following will form the board of directors for 2016/17. College hosting noted First Nations political leader For the Townsman
College of the Rockies will host Arthur Manuel on Thursday, April 7 for a discussion on Decolonization, Reconciliation and New Directions. The talk, the latest in the College’s Indigenous Speaker Series, is sponsored by the College of the Rockies Faculty Association and the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC. Arthur Manuel was four-times elected Chief of his Neskonlith Indian Band and three-times elected Chair of the Shuswap National Tribal Council. He served as spokesperson of the Interior Alliance of BC Indigenous Nations, co-chaired the Assembly of First Nations Delgamuukw Implementation Strategic Committee, is a member of the Board of Directors of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples and is a founder and a spokesperson for the Defenders of the Land.

The College of the Rockies will be hosting Arthur Manuel for a discussion on Decolonization, Reconciliation and New Directions on April 7 On the international stage, Manuel served as co-chair of the Global Indigenous Caucus at the
UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and is currently cochair of the Forum’s North American Caucus. Since 2003, Manuel has acted as spokesperson for the Indigenous Network on Economies and Trade. “Mr. Manuel is an impressive representative of his ancestors and, against many odds, stands up for the rights of Indigenous people,” says College of the Rockies’ Aboriginal Education Coordinator, Andrew Judge. “The community is poised to learn a great deal from his career and dedication to reconciliation.” Manuel’s presentation will take place in the Aboriginal Gathering Place at the College’s main campus on Thursday, April 7 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. A social with light refreshments will precede the event from 6:30 to 7:00 pm. Learn more about College of the Rockies at cotr.ca
Minister nixes lower speed limits, photo radar Tom Fletcher Black Press
Transportation Minister Todd Stone has ruled out a return of photo radar and lowering urban speed limits to help reduce motor vehicle fatalities. Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall recommends in a new report that urban areas should have a default speed limit of 30 km/h to protect pedestrians and cyclists from fatal collisions. Safer roads and vehicles have reduced fatalities for vehicle occupants by almost 80 per cent in the past 40 years, but the death rate for pedestrians has remained stubbornly high, and cyclist fatalities have gone up as more people take to bikes in urban areas, the report
says. Kendall said when a pedestrian is struck by a car travelling 50 km/h, the chances of survival are only 20 per cent. When the vehicle speed is reduced to 30, a pedestrian has about a 90 per cent chance of surviving a direct impact. The current default speed limit for streets in B.C. is 50 km/h, and that includes urban streets where vehicles may be parked on both sides and drivers have little time to see a pedestrian stepping out. Currently municipalities have to post signs to establish a lower limit for any selected street. Stone said Thursday the idea of lowering default municipal speed limits from 50 to 40 was debated at last year’s Union of B.C. Munici-
palities convention, and “quite resoundingly defeated.” He said there would have to be a significant change in position of local governments before he would consider it. The report also recommends the province consider returning to photo radar speed enforcement, and Stone restated the B.C. government’s long-standing position against it. “We believe there are more effective technologies that can be employed, and frankly a better way to utilize precious police resources than to resurrect what was largely a failed photo radar program that was nothing more than a tax grab for British Columbians,” Stone said.
