Citizens on Patrol could be formed in Rimbey BY TREENA MIELKE The formation of a Citizens on Patrol group in Rimbey is a distinct possibility and the mayor and council are doing their part to ensure such a group gets a green light. “We looked at the issue (a citizens on patrol group) a couple of months ago during the budgetary process and we do have money in our budget,” said Mayor Rick Pankiw. The mayor said tough economic times that people are facing presently can be one of the indicators that causes crime to escalate and having such a group in town would
help safeguard citizens and assist the RCMP. Pankiw said the RCMP has been notified about the possibility of a COP group being formed and are very receptive. Being the eyes and ears for the RCMP is exactly what the mandate of Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol is all about, said Irene Wegmann, secretary for the society. Wegmann attended Monday’s council meeting to give councillors an overview of the Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol. Incorporated in 2003, the group has been actively conducting patrols in the lake neighborhoods
of Poulsen’s Pasture, Sunnyside, Summer Village of Parkland Beach, Poulsen’s Estates, Westlake Estates, Birch Meadows and Birch Bay. Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol has 40 members and about 27 active members. Wegmann said COP use their own vehicles and are self-funded. Binoculars, flashlights, safety vests are available for members. “We patrol in the safest manner we can,” she said. “It’s all volunteer.” Following Wegmann’s presentation Jeremy Crossman from GFI Systems talked to council about the company and
offered to assist through the use of their technology. He noted that GFI Systems provides location-based technology solutions that improve, safety, efficiency and productivity. Use of cellular date networks and a complex reporting algorithm ensure that users have a clear picture of where vehicles are and how drivers are operating at all times. “This would be a new endeavor for us, but we would like to do whatever we can to assist,” said Crossman. “We would like to provide the equipment.”

Treena Mielke On The Other Side The spotlight has been on Rimbey, lately, in a good way. Sports! Right now it’s all about sports. Hosting the PeeWee provincials was a good thing and it brought lots of attention to our small town.

tance of teamwork. The spinoffs from the provincials were positive and one can be sure retail outlets and eateries and lodgings all benefited from our out-of-town guests. Of course, hockey has hit the limelight, but kudos also go out to all the athletes in Rimbey and area. The junior high Spartan A basketball team who recently won the Central West Alberta Junior High Athletics Association championship did their school and their community proud. Loni Mounkes and Olivia Quaife, junior high students at Bluffton School represented Zone 4 at the winter games on the U15
volleyball team. No doubt, there are many other athletes out there who also deserve recognition in their pursuit of excellence. While sports plays a significant role, not only in Rimbey, but in all our towns and cities, it is important to recognize the significance of cultural events that, thanks to the hard work and dedication of committed individuals, continues to flourish here. The Beatty House is a perfect example of culture, alive and well, based in an amazing historical venue. The last of the Home Routes concerts for 20152016 season will be held this Friday, April 8 at the Beatty House. These con-
certs have been highly entertaining, delivering a variety of talented musical artists from all over the globe. While this is the end of the season for the Home Routes concerts, other concerts are planned for May and June. The people who work behind the scenes to keep culture alive in Rimbey are to be commended for a job well done. It is through the efforts of the people in our community, each bringing their own diverse interests and talents to the forefront, that Rimbey is able to offer both cultural and recreational activities, both of which, will continue to have positive spinoffs for the town.

People came from far and wide to watch our youngsters perform on ice. And they were not disappointed. Both Rimbey and our neighbour to the south, Bentley did well at provincials displaying lots of heart, hustle and determination, not to mention skill. Kudos need to go not only to the young players themselves, but to the coaches, the team managers, and lastly, but definitely not least, the parents themselves. The importance of sports in a young person’s life cannot be minimized. Participation provides life lessons regarding achieving one’s individual personal best and the impor-
Outside of Red Deer College’s Library is a couple of birds building a nest in a tree. If I’m lucky, the chairs near the corner windows are unoccupied, and I can grab front row indoor seats to the modest spectacle of nature. Though, it’s been nice to take a moment to stand outside to watch the pair of magpies. The noise they make isn’t particularly appealing to the ears, but looking upon their little project grants a little respite from my studies.
Over the course of a few days, I’ve learned a couple of things watching those birds. They don’t seem to worry a whole lot about anything else other than getting that nest built. But there isn’t really much outside of getting food and shelter that those birds have to worry about, actually it’s really all they have to worry about. As other students get dropped off or walk off the city buses at the front, they stroll right past the birds nesting in the tree. Most of the students seem to be glued to his or her smart phone and are completely unaware of the nest. I suppose there isn’t a like button on the trunk of the tree, nor is
there share button (unless I decide to mention the magpies’ nest to someone else). Something real is right within view, and the majority of people walk right past through the library doors while looking into a screen. I won’t dismiss the fact that there are some very real recent events that people should be aware of. It sounds like Donald Trump still wants to build a wall, and terrorism is unfortunately still and thing: two suicide-bombers carried out attacks in Brussels lately. The only terror to nesting birds is a kid with a sling-shot. Thankfully, RDC’s campus doesn’t have any of those and RDC isn’t considering
putting a wall up either. RDC students have weird little nesting habits. There is usually a semi-circle of protective objects around them: notebooks, papers, coffee mugs, and sandwich wrappers—with a computer terminal or textbook as the focal point. But in many regards these little nests are actually walls. These habits say stay out of my space, or don’t talk to me, or I just trying to survive (academically that is). A lot of those same students that sit within a semi-circle nest will bash Trump and his desires for a wall along his nation’s borders. I’m not for or against Trump, I simply
want to point out some parallel behaviours. I’m guilty of them too. Students needs a wall to get an A; Trump needs a wall to keep out the bad guys; Birds need a nest just to survive the night. And this column certainly won’t award anyone with what they need. It’s just too bad that when I step outside my own semi-circle and notice my fellow students trundling past something real. It’s disheartening to see people walking with their ears buds in, their Toronto Blue Jays ball cap low on their brow, and their eyes transfixed on a mobile device. In many ways Trump’s wall is already up.

RIMBEY REVIEW 5
Walking trails will be temporarily disrupted BY TREENA MIELKE The people who use the walking trails can expect a temporary disruption when work begins on the new senior’s lodge. Coun. Mathew Jaycox, who sits on the building committee for Rimoka Housing Authority said the portion of the walking trail on the west boundary of the property on which the new lodge is to be located will be moved. “We plan to put a temporary gravel path on that section of trail,” he said. Jaycox said there will be a short time lapse between moving the cement and getting the gravel trail in place, but the town and Rimoka will work together to ensure it happens as quickly as possible. The gravel path will eventually be replaced with cement and the gravel may be used for a base. Work has not begun on the lodge to date, but the fence has been put up. Jaycox said work may begin before the formal sod turning takes place. A management team consisting of representatives from Berry Architechture, Rimoka and the province will oversee the project. The lodge is to be approximately 480,000 square feet and is to be located on 8.64 acres of land south of the Rimbey Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel. The new facility is to have 82 rooms, including six double-occupancy suites.
Correction A caption for a photo of the Rimbey Ladies Auxiliary in the March 29 edition of the Review incorrectly stated the auxiliary donated $500 to the Blindman Handivan. The ladies auxiliary, in fact, donated $5,000. The Review apologizes for this error.

Letter to the Editor: In my first letter to the Editor, I would like to correct some misleading statements made by Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) regarding Rimbey Christian School (RCS) in the article published by the Rimbey Review. First of all a brief history about education in this great country of ours. The beginnings of our educational system began with two equally funded choices, the Catholic School System and the Protestant School System now referred to as Public Schools. In the beginning students were seen as more than their future occupation, and schools strove to educate their students academically, physically, emotionally, socially AND spiritually! Over time that has changed and sadly the spiritual aspect of education which needs to be included in every subject, has slowly been removed from the public school setting. The fund-
Reader says statements regarding Christian school are misleading ing of education has also changed. While Catholic Schools still receive the same funding as Public Schools, Christian Schools or Alternative Schools do not. They receive only a portion of the educational grant for a student, and no funding for administration and no funding for their building. We have supported Rimbey Christian for 30 years, and the reasons for sending our children to Rimbey Christian School had nothing to do with the technology, or whether they had a gym, new windows or a phone system. We believe that everything in this world has God’s claim on it, and that includes the education of our children. If our curriculum and our customs leave God out, we teach with great force that He does not count. I am very thankful for all the teachers, board members, families and volunteers that have impacted our children with the good news of what God has done for us, and have shown
them that they are part of a community bigger than themselves. The WCPS “comprehensive review” of RCS was only a short visit. I cannot address all the comments made, but there are two that I feel need to be addressed. First, the WCPS board stated that “right now, they don’t pay for bussing and we provide it for free”. The full story is that a few years back, WCPS decided to stop providing bussing for children attending Christian Schools even though their parents pay the same taxes as everyone else in the district. Instead they tried to charge us the highest fee legally possible to continue the service. Their decision forced us to look at other ways of getting students to school, and is why we now provide our own bussing, even for pre-school students. Second, the building maintenance that WCPS is concerned about being “on the hook for” and the “significant spending” to upgrade Rimbey Christian

is ironic coming from a board that has a $2-million deficit despite receiving full funding. Perhaps they could learn from RCS, which has faithfully maintained a balanced budget for 30 years with less funding. Furthermore, alternative schools in Alberta that have gone under the umbrella of a school division, have retained the property and buildings and continued to pay the maintenance cost with no additional costs to the school division. Lastly, the article implies WCPS views RCS as below par when it comes to academics and Phys Ed. If this were accurate, then why have so many alumni gone on to excel scholastically and athletically? We believe it is because we treat the student as a whole person. We teach that people are endowed with God-given gifts that should be developed into a passion to serve their community. If you would like to see the difference for yourself, come tour the school or check out our website. The WCPS board decision reaffirmed their “status quo” approach to education—if you are a parent who believes there is more to learning than phone systems and computer labs, come join the adventure of being part of Rimbey Christian School. Russia’s military background based on borrowing
Stu Salkeld Pipestone Flyer While the Cold War ended 20 years ago, the world certainly doesn’t seem any safer. It doesn’t seem that long ago imag-
es of Berliners swinging iron hammers at “The Wall” were on TV coupled with optimistic predictions that the Soviet Union and its citizens were no longer our enemies. Russia and the rest of the USSR’s remnants were on “our side” now. With the recent meddling of Vlad Putin’s government in its neighboring countries, the impression that Russia is not threat to anyone is quickly fading. Russia, at the very least, seems to be a threat to Ukraine, as the recent invasion and absorption of Crimea proves. Too, Russia’s military intervention in Syria’s civil war is not only the former USSR
looking out for its traditional Middle Eastern ally but is also akin to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany interfering in the Spanish Civil War: let’s test out some of these awesome new weapons we’ve got. Pundits around the world waxed eloquently about Russia’s military prowess in Syria. To be sure, the Russian military is strong. It’s the best military technology that a nation could steal. Ever wonder where the famed AK-47 assault rifle came from? If you think it developed purely from continued on page 16
Me and mom and taxes BY CHRISTINE FERNIE, CPA SPECIAL TO RIMBEY REVIEW Tax season comes at the same time every year and each year I feel a bit more prepared. I am a retired accountant and when I am in Alberta, I prepare my mom’s taxes. I know many people are having a tough time with low oil prices so I thought I would share some tips to help others get organized, be on time and get all the deductions possible. DON’T BE LATE. To avoid interest, taxes must be paid by April 30. This year we have until May 2, 2016 because that day falls on a Saturday. To avoid unnecessary and costly penalties file your tax return when it is due, especially if you owe money. Most people must file their tax return by end April. If you are self-employed or have a business, you have until June 15 to file, but the taxes must still be paid by May 2, 2016. DON’T BE TOO EARLY! Financial institutions and businesses have until 31 March to prepare and send out their T3, T5 and other slips so if you have savings or investments, you might want to wait until early April to be sure you have all of your T-slips. HOW DO I FILE? You can hire a professional or you can DIY. If you hire a professional, ask about their fees as some charge per slip and some charge hourly. If you have someone else prepare your taxes, do NOT separate your slips as it takes them more time to sort the paperwork. If you DIY, consider using an online
product as you can try before you buy. This means you can fill in your return and see what the result is before you pay. You only pay when you file the return. You could buy a program at an electronic shop where you may be able to get some advice on which package to buy. Visit the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website for free information and for a list of acceptable programs for e-filing at http:// www.cra-arc.gc.ca. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO PREPARE YOUR TAX RETURN? To determine income, gather all your T-slips which could include T3, T4, T4A, T4A, T4A (OAS), T4A (P), T4E, T4RSP, T4RIF, T5, T600/T5008, T5013. If it has a T at the beginning, you will need it. Do you have other income including alimony, social assistance, foreign pensions, investment income for which no slips are available? Document details of business, professional, self-employed or farming income and expenses, plus any asset additions and disposals in the year. Record details of any rental operations, both income and expenses, plus asset additions and disposals in the period. First reading given to rezoning, public hearing to be held April 25 BY TREENA MIELKE
Gone fishing: Ellie Anderson is intent on catching a fish while her twin brother Henry takes time to smile at the camera. Two-year-old Noah Kerklaan and his four-year-old sister Summer are also enjoying some time to fish in the pond set up in the foyer of the Peter Lougheed Community Centre during the Town of Rimbey recreation department’s spring festival held Treena Mielke Photo Fri., March 18.
Council has given the green light to begin a somewhat lengthy process to make way for the rezoning of three lots located across the street from the proposed seniors’ lodge. At its Monday, March 30 meeting, council gave first reading to a bylaw to change the zoning of the lots owned by Stan Cummings from R3 to R1. The R1 zoning will allow for a transition along Rimstone Drive from high density to low density. In order to adopt the bylaw, council must give second and third readings after a public hearing is held. The public hearing, to be held April 25, needs to be advertised for two consecutive weeks in the Rimbey Review. It will also be advertised
on the town’s website and copies will be available at the front counter for residents to pick up. Additionally, relevant agencies and adjacent neighbours must be notified. “What we have to do is follow the legal process,” said town planner, Liz Armitage. Cummings met with council on March 7 to discuss the re-designation. At that time he indicated that he never intended for these lands to be designated R3, and his application in 2014 did not specify re-designating these lands. Therefore, as a possible administrative error in the preparation of land use re-designation bylaw 890/14, Cummings felt that he should not be charged to rectify the situation. Administration noted
that regardless of that possibility, a new bylaw would be required to designate the lots back to R1. As such first reading, public hearing, and second and third readings are required. Council ag re e d Cummings needed to apply for the re-designation, which he did on March 9. The fees were waived due to the potential error. The land surrounding the lots is country residential and institutional and public uses lands which will house the future Rimoka seniors’ lodge. At the Feb. 22 meeting concerns were voiced by a couple of people in the gallery about the rezoning of the lots to low density which would eliminate the need for a back alley. Such concerns may be brought forward at the public hearing.

“The idea that folk music needs to exist in glass boxes is what tends to hold it back. Emilyn and John have a tremendous way of progressing folk music that is respectful but at the same time so freeing and playful. I wouldn’t be surprised if these tunes and arrangements are played for generations to come. It’s very hard to be unique, but Emilyn and John have such personality and playfulness that makes for an incomparable record…quite literally, there’s nothing else that sounds like it!” – Tom Power, CBC A unique duo will be in concert on Friday, April 8 our last Home Routes bash of this season – featuring the gifted Emilyn Stam and John David Williams. They are Toronto based musicians with long resumes of achievements in the genres of world, folk and jazz music. Emilyn, pianist and protégé of renown fiddler Oliver Schroer, and John, a classically trained clarinetist and wailing harmonica player, have joined together to produce a fusion of sounds that is creatively unique. John and Emilyn met while playing in bands “Jaron FreemanFox and the Opposite of Everything” and the
“Lemon Bucket Orkestra” (nominated this year for a world music Juno award). Their musical relationship started when they would find a quiet place after rehearsal or between sets and improvise strange and beautiful music together. Later they discovered a mutual love for danceable traditional tunes and songs. Their duo show is always alive and evolving and spans this wide range of musical interests. Think of a repetoire pulled from the World of music: Klezmer, New Orleans jazz, the Blues, Eastern European, and Quebecois old time traditionals, all loosely knit together into free-flowing and textured melodies. Emilyn hails originally from Smithers, BC but her musical interests and talents have called her to study and teach globally and particularly Central & Eastern Europe. She studied classical piano in the Netherlands, traveled around France playing for traditional folk dances (Balfolk) and is known for her solo improvised piano album, not mention her musical involvement in clowning! She’s been called upon to improvise violin accompaniment to poetry, write and continued on page 14

record piano music for short films, and compose and perform in modern dance theatre pieces, all the while playing with any of the many bands she’s joined. Yet no matter what the context, the sound is clearly her own: emotive and sensitive solo piano improvisations, odd metered, jazz-tinted-chamber-folk arrangements and compositions, & groovy piano accompaniments to traditional music. John studied classical clarinet at University of Toronto, then ventured out on his own exploration of music cultures and eras, with musical influences extending much farther back than the early 20th Century. wacky clarinet sounds and groovy harmonica playing, especially while fronting the New Orleans Jazz and Klezmer inspired band “The Boxcar Boys”. John’s clarinet is the source of both gorgeous classical resonations and happy honking, depending on the venue and the music genre. Improvisation and a vital performance are two of the hallmarks of John’s work. “You can really develop your music and make it slick and perfect in the studio,” Williams has stated for the Toronto Jazz Festival blog, “but for me the beauty of music is in all of the imperfections; all those little glitches and scratches that come with acoustic performances. The scratchy fiddle sounds, the clarinet clicks … they just add something special to it.” Here’s your chance to hear that unique scratch and click, in the House on April 8th, 7:30pm Tickets available at Stationery Stories and Sounds, Rimbey. RIMBEY REVIEW 15
Amnesty International’s Stop Torture Campaign coming to Rimbey BY FLORENCE STEMO Amnesty International has been working to stop torture for more than 50 years. AI was part of the campaign in support of the Convention Against Torture, which was adopted by the United Nations in 1984, and has been signed by 155 countries, including Canada. However, the use of torture still thrives in more than 100 countries, behind closed doors and in corners of prisons where no one can see. The Optional Protocol of the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) is a treaty which supplements to the above-mentioned Convention. It lays out a framework for regular national and international level inspections of detention centres, to ensure there are no conditions that allow torture of detainees to take place. The OPCAT was adopted by the UN in 2002, and entered into force on June 22, 2006, upon its ratification by 20 countries. As of September 2015, the Protocol has 75 signatories and 80 parties. Canada is not one of them. AI is campaigning to urge Canada to sign this global treaty. Beatings, waterboarding, starvation, long periods of
solitary confinement, sexual assault, threats of execution, and death threats to family members are some of the means of torture used by those in authority around the world, in order to get information or admission of guilt from detainees, many of whom are innocent. The practice of torture is flourishing, as more governments seek to justify torture in the name of national security. Over the next two years Amnesty International Canada is committed to a STOP TORTURE CAMPAIGN with the ultimate goal of stamping out torture everywhere and forever. In support of this campaign, and to draw attention to the ongoing worldwide issue of Torture, Rimbey’s AI Group’s action this Spring is threefold. 1. We are bringing to Rimbey the photo exhibit, In/ visible Scars, which presents the photos and stories of eight torture survivors living in Canada, each of whom bears the scars of torture, but has not allowed the scars to break his/her spirit. This exhibit will be on display at the Public Library in Rimbey from April 9 until April 16. 2. On Wednesday, April 13, at 7:00 pm we are showing the 2014 political drama doc-
Home Routes concerts attract sell out crowds BY TREENA MIELKE The Home Routes concerts held at the Beatty House for the last several months are drawing to a close. The last concert, featuring the gifted Emilyn Stam and John David Williams, will be held Friday, April 8. The Toronto based musicians have long resumes of achievements in the genres of world, folk and jazz music. Bronwen Jones from The Beatty House Historical Committee said hosting the Home Routes concerts has been a good experience. Concerts were held in September, October and November and then started up again In February, March and April. Jones said the response has been good and the musicians have provided an interesting
variety of music. “The variety has been really interesting. Some of the types of music has been a stretch for some people, but overall it’s been great.” Jones noted that some of the musicians had never been to Rimbey and the exposure was positive for their careers. “We were almost always a sold out crowd,” she said. Musicians who took part in the Home Routes concerts were billeted to different families in Rimbey. “It was a nice experience and gave people the chance to get to know them.” Rimbey was part of the Home Routes circuit, which included Eastend, Saskatchewan, Rocky Mountain House, Ponoka, Red Deer, Olds, Okotoks, Lethbridge, Lundbreck and Medicine Hat.
Ommission An article in the March 15 edition of The Rimbey Review with the headline, ‘School provides positive learning environment’ omited the following: The evening will also include the draw for Aspire’s Children’s Raffle. The grand prize is a 2016 Jeep Compass high altitude 4x4 valued at $34,100. The second prize is a 14-blue diamond dinner ring valued at $8,000 and the third prize is a cash reward of $2,500. Children’s Raffle tickets can be purchased at http://aspirespecialneeds.ca/events/raffle.
umentary film, ROSEWATER, written, directed, and produced by Jon Stewart. The story is based on the experience of Iran-Canadian Maziar Bahari, who was detained for 118 days at the Evin Prison in Tehran after he reported on violence against the country’s presidential election. Bahir was usually blindfolded during his brutal interrogations, and his interrogator’s only distinguishing feature was that he smelled of rose water. 3. We are inviting/encouraging all interested people to sign the AI petition which calls on the Canadian Government to join the OPCAT (see Paragraph I of this article). This petition will be available for signing at the Rimbey Library April 9-16.

Russia’s military background continued from page 8 the imagination of Mihail Kalasnikov, you’re mistake. During WWII the German military developed the first assault rifle, the MP44. Many thousands were
manufactured, and many thousands captured by the Soviet Union. Two years after the war ended, the AK-47 appeared and looked suspiciously similar to the MP-44. While Russian apologists try desperately
to deny any connection, Russian historian Aleksei Korobeinikov had written in 2009, “Famous Soviet arms builder Mihail Kalasnikov recently acknowledged he didn’t work alone at the design and development of
the AK-47 assault rifle, but he benefited from the help of Hugo Schmeisser, the most prolific small arms inventor of the Third Reich.” Then there’s the famed MiG-15, the first Soviet jet fighter. The early Soviet jet industry was built on German designs captured or stolen by the USSR at
the end of WWII. Most military historians agree the MiG-15’s swept wing design was cribbed from German research. Needing a decent jet turbine, Soviet envoys bought “test engines” from the British government, Rolls Royce Nenes, then blatantly copied them for use in the MiG-15 (Rolls

Royce subsequently tried to sue the Soviet government for 200 million pounds). Then there’s the famous Mig-29 high-speed interceptor, the so-called “Foxbat.” Being a jet and military history buff, I always wondered why the Mig-25 looked so similar to Canada’s failed Avro Arrow. The Arrow was a late 1950’s, early 1960’s interceptor designed to stop Soviet bombers that may be carrying nukes across the Arctic circle. There’s a reason why the MiG-25 looks so similar. It’s a proven fact the Canadian government was infiltrated by Soviet spies, and that the Avro Arrow was one of the projects penetrated by those Russian spies. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, many files were declassified, including the Mitrokhin archives which described how the Canadian aerospace industry, and particularly the Arrow program, had been infiltrated by Warsaw Pact spies. Coincidentally, by 1964, the MiG-25 appeared. Just out of the blue. So take Vlad Putin’s veiled threats about his rejuvenated military with a grain of salt. No doubt, every weapon in the Russian arsenal probably originated in the West and our engineers are familiar with their strengths and weaknesses. Because all of our engineers designed it first. RIMBEY REVIEW 17
Snowshoe hare smallest of hare family BY HAROLD FISHER Snowshoe Hare (Lepus americanus) The Snowshoe Hare inhabits the forested regions of Canada and is one of two hare species found in Alberta. While the other hare species, the Whitetailed Jack Rabbit, prefers the open country and parklands of the south, the Snowshoe Hare is never found far from forested regions or dense woodland. In the brushy chokecherry-filled coulees of the south, the Snowshoe hare is replaced by the smaller Nuttall’s Cottontail, a rabbit species. Hares and rabbits, sometimes called lagomorphs, are often confused as there is a strong superficial resemblance. While rabbits are born naked and blind, hares are born fully furred with eyes open and are quickly able to fend for themselves. Most hare species are larger and more robust than rabbits and often have a more northerly distribution. The Snowshoe Hare, sometimes referred to locally as the ‘bush rabbit’, is one
of the smallest of the hares. By day it rests in a form which it hollows out under a deadfall or dense clump of grass or willow thicket, becoming active with the approach of night time. Its presence is detected by the runways it creates through the dense vegetation. Its diet consists of vegetation, usually various grasses, forbs and buds. During the winter, bark from shrubs and trees may form a large part of the diet, and when hare populations are high, considerable damage to forest stands may occur. It will often move to more open areas to feed, especially in the spring when the first green grasses emerge, but it is never more than a few hops from dense cover. A unique adaptation in hares is the ability to turn white in the winter. This change is governed by photoperiod; as daylength decreases in autumn, the hare begins to grow a white-tipped winter coat. The brown summer coat is gradually replaced and by the time the snow flies, the hare has a complete coat of white except for the black
tips of its ears. In the spring, the change to a brown summer coat usually coincides with the snow melt. In Alberta, the Snowshoe Hare usually produces one or two litters per season with a brood size of 3 to 6 young. The mother returns to nurse the babies once or twice a day, usually under the cover of darkness. The young are hidden together for a few days, but soon make their way into cover and begin life on their own. Snowshoe Hares are known for their periodic population fluctuations, with numbers increasing dramatically every ten years or so and then rapidly plummeting to scarcity. Mammalian predators include foxes, coyotes, mink, fisher, wolverine and especially the lynx, whose populations closely parallel the hare numbers. The most important avian predators in Alberta are the Great-horned Owl and the Northern Goshawk. The Snowshoe Hare is a keystone species of the northern forests since its numbers influence the health of so many other species.

Alder Flats 4-H Club report BY QUINN WOODS CLUB REPORTER Thanks to Altalink for sponsoring 4-H speeches at club level. There were four of our 4-H club members that went to District Public Speaking in Wetaskiwin at the Moose Hall.
When times are tough, we all need to make smart decisions to save money. 16041DG0 Starting April 1, 2016 the Alberta Government is saving taxpayers $3 million a year by ending mailed renewal reminders for vehicle registrations, drivers’ licenses and ID cards.
You can choose from a variety of free electronic reminders, mark your renewal dates on your calendar or set an alert on your smart phone or computer. Sign up to receive a free electronic reminder at eservices.alberta.ca/notify or visit your local registry agent or AMA.

Great job everyone - it was difficult to get there. Winter camp was at the end of February - it was fantastic. The councillors were probably the best ever I have had in my life. What you do is play a ton of games that are really fun and there are lots of activities in the snow.
Faith and belief discussed
Alder Flat 4-H club members Emily, Wylie and Eric Pietsch, Quinn Woods, Mackenzie and Cole Photo submitted Dooper. Missing is Jack Willows.
Alberta is modernizing renewal reminders — saving taxpayers $3 million a year.
Our club members did really well at District Public Speaking. Senior Wylie Pietsch won first and he will go onto Regionals. Intermediate Emily Pietsch won second and will go on to Regionals, also. Juniors Erich Pietsch won second and myself, Quinn Woods won third.
BY DON ALQUIST For this essay, I’ll refer to believers with the letter B and atheists, agnostics and other nonbelievers as NBs. Sorry, I forgot that the famous atheist Dr. Richard Dawkins already claimed the letter “B” as belonging to his camp the “Brights”. What a quandary, there must be a suitable acronym …hmm how about the “NVBs” naw, that is too phonetically challenging and may be construed by the umbrageous as inflammatory. Would they see the humour in this offering: Stalwart–Agreeable– Insightful– Nurturing – Thoughtful – Sincere A gentle segue from levity to gravity seems unlikely so here we go – Atheists and agnostics rely quite heavily on the denigration of faith. It is most often a contrived strategy employed not so much to bolster the atheistic position but to attempt to diminish the
credibility of a believer who is probably unaware of the robust strength of his own position. The major anti-theistic, atheistic and agnostic assertion is that faith is belief without evidence. Some authoritative sources register faith and belief as synonymous. Here is why they’re not. I suggest that faith is not necessarily belief and that belief is not necessarily faith. In order to get the discussion off the ground, a semantic distinction is necessary. Let’s start with a brief dictionary definition of both terms: Faith 1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something. 2. Strong belief in God or the doctrines of a religion based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. Belief 1. An acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists. 2. Something one accepts as true or real. You have probably already noticed that faith by definition one is complementary to definition two of the word ‘belief’ the assurance of something excepted as true or real. The crux of the difference lies in definition two of the word ‘faith’. How can an atheist scientist in the absence
of real evidence have a strong belief that black holes, dark matter and dark energy exist and still claim that he has no faith that they do? He only has hope, speculation, conjecture and supportive rhetoric from his peers and colleagues. It becomes so manifestly apparent that the world views of the believer and the secular scientist have access to the same window of reality but only one of them is willing to concede the possibility of a larger view. It seems as though the secularist is restrained by a philosophical event horizon. In times past I have been disappointed to hear how clear thinking, gifted, wholesome people have been intellectually abused and socially spurned for promoting their faith by postulating inoffensive and neutral theorems. The average person (if there is such a thing anymore) can not be expected to maintain a respectable quotient of humility in view of the stupefied, self-willed and chaotic place this world is becoming. The famous atheist of the 20th century Bertrand Russell was challenged with the following question: what will you say to God when he asks why you did not believe? Russell said “insufficient evidence”. “Suppression of evidence” is more like it.

BOORMAN Dr. George Coverdale (1917 - 2016) Dr. George passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 23 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 98 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Blanche in 2011; 2 brothers, Arthur and Samuel; one sister, Mary; grandson, John; and great grandson, Cohen. George is survived by 6 sons, David (Terry) of Red Deer, Michael (Annette) of Rimbey, John (Nancy) of Rocky Mountain House, George (Cristina) of Vancouver, Robert (Rose) of Edmonton, and Douglas (Karen) of Fort Langley. George also leaves to mourn 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, and one sister Betty of Port Alberni. George was born in Lethbridge, and spent his school years in Didsbury and Lacombe. Upon high school completion he spent one year at Normal School in Calgary. He then taught at the small rural school of Andrew for 2 years following which he attended the University of Alberta where he obtained his M.D. and courted and married Blanche. He practiced medicine briefly in Barrhead before moving to Rimbey in 1948 where he worked until his retirement in 1984. As a physician and surgeon George served the communities and surrounding districts of Rimbey, Bluffton and Winfield, providing a broad spectrum of medical services. Many local families recall George’s compassionate and competent care during his 36 years of work in Rimbey, and it is still common to hear “Dr. George delivered me!”. George had endless energy for many activities (skiing, wind-surfing, sailing, golfing, curling, dancing, bowling, and art club). He was committed to Rimbey United Church and served in many capacities (Board, choir, building projects, and related social justice programs). He and Blanche had a keen interest in travel and visited many parts of the globe together. George’s love of nature was evident in his carefully maintained yard and garden, and the time he spent at the family cottage on Gull Lake. Many happy gatherings were enjoyed at the cottage, as George’s greatest joy was being surrounded by his family. The family is grateful to all those over the years who have expressed their high regard for George as a physician, and also as a strong proponent of a socially just society who lived his life as he believed. A celebration of his life will be held April 9th at 2:00 pm, at the United Church in Rimbey. Friends will be invited to share their memories of Dr. George at that time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com) and Rimbey United Church (Box 7, Rimbey, Alberta, T0C2J0).

She danced, she sang, she loved. The family of Minnie Ann “Mickey” Makofka of Red Deer would like to announce that on March 26, 2016 at the age of 87 years, she answered the call of the Angels who were looking for someone to fill a spot in their musical group. Even though dancing was her first love, she would never turn down the opportunity to help someone in need. She will likely bring cinnamon buns for all to enjoy. Mickey was born in Luscar, Alberta. Her teaching career started in Hoadley, Alberta where she met her husband, Charlie at a dance. After 38 years in the classroom she retired and became an avid traveler. In later years she enjoyed line dancing, volunteering, singing with the Ho-downers and spending time with her grandchildren. Left to celebrate her life are her son, Wesley (Janis) Makofka; two daughters, Kammi (Kelvin) Rosentreter and Sally (Dan) Quon; seven grandchildren, Tyler, Jessica, Kellen, Kody, Kacy, Jasmine and Santana; her sister Julie Howe as well as numerous nieces, nephews and family members. PARK, Dale
Apr. 9, 1932 - Mar. 25, 2016 Dale was born in Eckville, the youngest of nine children born to Ken and Gladys Park. He was raised in the Rocky area where he was active in sports as a child. In March of 1955 he married Alice (Counnic), also from the Rocky area. They celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary earlier this month. He started his trucking career at the age of 15 and continued in this occupation for his entire life. He worked for several employers over the years logging over a million miles all across North America. In 1979 he decided to stay closer to home and began driving for Lacombe County, where is stayed for the next 18 years, retiring in 1997. Dale and Alice enjoyed travelling. On The Other Side
The Easter celebration at my house came and went, complete with the lovely, soft pastel blues and gentle pinks and warm yellows of spring. Outside my freshly washed dining room window the birds fluttered around and chirped and sang and scattered bird seed all over the ground in complete disregard for any semblance of tidiness which I was trying to achieve, inside. But, I was happy. I cleaned and cooked and allowed my creative mind to worry about tiny insignificant little things that no one but me would notice anyway which, in the end, is probably quite justifiable. Thinking back over my rather frenzied preparedness, I’m wondering if I was immersing myself in the details of preparation so I didn’t have to think about it. I didn’t have to think about the thin, invisible pall of sadness that hung, unseen like a huge net over our entire family threating to choke out any joy the Easter season had to offer. One of us had lost a child, a dearly beloved daughter with laughing eyes and curly dark hair. A girl who loved to ride horses and run, a girl with a quick and ready smile and a sweet and caring spirit. She died. She would have been 55-years-old on March 22. My sister, her mother, said the church in Little Rock, Arkansas where her daughter had lived for many years was full. “And it was a big church,” she said.
They said the minister who shared in giving the service, cried. “It was the hardest service I ever had to do,” he was reported as saying, later. Everyone nodded in sympathy. The service was for his sister. Yes, it has been a dark time for the family; my sister and her husband and their children and the grieving children and grandchildren left in the States and the shroud of sadness that surrounded them has reached out to touch us all. I invited them for Easter thinking the change of scenery may be good for their bruised and tender souls. I didn’t know, really, but I thought I would extend the invitation, anyway. They said they would come. And so I cleaned and cooked and planned and struggled in my head to find the right words to say when they arrived. I could not, so I washed the floor. I could not, so I arranged my table to make it more lovely. I could not, so I put a ceramic angel on my sister’s pillow. As it turned out, love is a verb anyway and it seemed to be all around us that day. No words were necessary. My nephew arrived, armed with a huge bouquet of pussywillows and crocuses. Another nephew and his wife came with a beautiful card filled with a personal message. Another one brought his quiet self. His presence was enough. The last post written on Facebook by my niece was ‘Find the good in every situation.’ And as I write this, the thought occurs to me that somehow, in spite of all the sadness that this woman with the curly dark hair and laughing eyes has left, she has given us all a reminder to do that very thing. Find the good.
