Rodeo cancelled by Agrifair this year Cost-saving measure after $51,000 deficit for 2015 Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

This year’s Abbotsford Agrifair rodeo has been cancelled to save money following a $51,000 deficit in 2015. The decision was made in January, four months after the fair’s board of directors announced the contract of general manager Pamela Brenner would not be renewed, in order to save about $68,000. Brenner had been the organization’s GM since 2007. Board president Ernie Silveri and vice-president Stephanie Nelson said cancelling the Mighty Fraser Rodeo will result in savings of between $75,000 and $80,000 for 2016. These costs include prize money, Canadian Professional Rodeo Association approval fees, and contractor fees. They said the 21-year-old rodeo, which is just one portion of the decades-old fair that runs annually on the B.C. Day long weekend, could return in future years. The board has also decided to reduce this year’s fair from four days to three, running Friday, July 29 to Sunday, July 31. In past years, Agrifair has

also been held on the holiday Monday, and Nelson said the board hopes to return to the longer fair in the future. Silveri and Nelson said the cost-cutting decisions were difficult but necessary. “It comes back to sustainability. We want to be here for another 100-plus years,” Nelson said. They said they anticipate losing some attendance from people who come to Agrifair solely for the rodeo, but hope to make up those numbers with other initiatives. Silveri said other activities are being slated for the rodeo ring at Exhibition Park, although he couldn’t go into detail because those plans have not yet been finalized. Recently released figures indicate that Agrifair recorded a deficit of just over $51,000 last year (about $605,000 in expenses and $554,000 in revenue), compared to a $16,000 shortfall in 2014. Silveri said some of the 2015 losses were due to a drop in attendance because of extreme record-breaking heat. Almost 36,000 people attended the 2015 fair, compared to about 37,000 in 2014 and 41,500 in 2013. Continued on A3

Agri awareness part of new approach From A1

The Abbotsford Agrifair will turn to other events this summer to replace the annual rodeo.

Keep ‘em Guessing Trixie Turner

Nelson said last year’s deficit also included about $30,000 that was spent on additional attractions and activities to try to draw in more people. She said the board has since realized that approach didn’t work. “We recognized that we polarized the fair with small pockets of things to do, rather than more of a cohesive fair,” Nelson said. She said the plan for 2016 is to make activities at the fair blend together better – for example, by offering an agriculture awareness tour that takes people to the different sections of the fair, explaining where their food comes from. Measures to address the heat include cooling stations, a misting tent and an indoor fun zone with activities such as mini golf, rocking climbing and a literacy centre. Nelson said the emphasis will be on family fun, affordability, and agricultural awareness and education. Silveri said the absence of a general manager has meant that the 10-member volunteer board has taken on more work, but they are committed to seeing the event continue long into the future. “We should be proud of our fair,” he said. Agrifair has received a $90,000 grant from the City of Abbotsford the last few years and anticipates getting $85,000 this year, but Nelson said the board’s strategic plan is to make the event self-sustaining in the next few years. She hopes that people continue to attend Agrifair and that more people choose it as part of their vacation plans instead of going away for the long weekend. “We want you to have a good time so you see good value in it and it becomes part of the tapestry of your family.”

‘I have survived this nightmare’

QUALITY

Black Press

“Exhausting.” That’s how an Abbotsford teenage rape victim described her feeling after dozens of court appearances over more than four years leading up to her assailant’s sentencing. “It’s just been exhausting,” K.W. said outside BC Supreme Court in Chilliwack last Friday after the sentencing of 47-year-old Gilles Leger, formerly of Abbotsford. But despite the torment that nearly tore her family apart and caused suicidal thoughts, lack of sleep, estrangement from her friends and even bullying at school, the victim of the Oct. 1, 2011 rape that took place on the back of an ATV at Gill Bar on the Fraser River in Chilliwack wants to tell her story. “I want my voice heard,” she said. “I think it’s important for people to understand that it can happen to anyone.” K.W. has struggled with suicidal thoughts, depression and night terrors. She has been on anti-psychotic medication and still needs sleeping pills. And the court process added only further trauma as she was cross-examined by Leger’s lawyer in a way that made her feel blamed. Still, she bravely agreed to testify in open court during the trial, and read her own victim impact statement at sentencing. “I read it, and as hard as it was, it was very empowering,” she said. K.W. wants other victims of sexual assault and rape to come forward and be brave in the face of a system that seems stacked against them. She said she plans to pursue a career in counselling or victim services. “My door is open and I can’t turn a blind eye because I know what it’s like. I don’t think that it gets better but you can get better.” (K.W. wanted not only to have her story told, but to have her real name used. However, a publication ban that was not requested by her prevents Black Press from doing so.) ■■■■ Before October 2014, K.W. was popular in school, fun-loving, got good grades and played soccer five times a week. “I was so happy,” she said. The then 15-year-old was what any parent would hope their teenage child would be. Then came a camping trip at Gill Bar on the Fraser River, shattering everything when the stepfather of her best friend turned on her. “The [K] I once was, died that night,” she told the court in a victim impact statement on Jan. 29. What exactly happened that night was the subject of some uncertainty in court, because both Leger and K.W. were intoxicated. K.W., Leger and his stepdaughter went to Gill Bar to ride ATVs and camp with a number of other people. Leger’s wife was scheduled to meet them the

argued. Justice Brian Joyce rejected Leger’s defence. “It’s simply no excuse,” Joyce said. At the sentencing hearing, both K.W. and her mother read victim impact statements to the court. K.W.’s mother’s voice quavered as she said there were no words to describe when a parent learns their child has been harmed. “I was horrified that someone could do those things to a child,” she said. “He betrayed us all, and I will never forgive him for the harm he has done.” In her statement, K.W. explained how her friends turned against her, spread lies about her and bullied her. “School became an absolute nightmare for me.” She developed a hatred for men, so deep-seated that she couldn’t be touched by family members. “I had to explain to grandpa why he couldn’t give her a hug,” K.W.’s mother told the court. ■■■■ After the sentencing hearing on Jan. 29, Joyce told the court he wanted to think about the case, and called the parties back for Feb. 5. It was then that he briefly outlined the submissions at trial and the sentencing hearing, calling it a “very troubling case.” He sentenced Leger to three years in jail and ordered he be placed on the sex offender registry for 20 years. Immediately after the sentencing, K.W. and her parents met with the Crown, who explained that a prison sentence is never what it appears, because of what is known as “statutory release.” Unlike parole, which is a discretionary type of release, statutory release is built into the system and means that except in extreme cases, offenders are released after serving two-thirds of the time handed to them by the courts. “It’s just very disappointing,” K.W. said. She is not OK with the length of the sentence, and the statutory release bothers her. “I think it sends a message to victims that no matter how hard we try in getting a sentence, in wanting ‘justice,’ it won’t even be served.” As for getting back to normal, K.W. doesn’t think that’s possible but she is moving forward with an urge to help other victims. She said she wanted her real name used because she is not ashamed of what happened to her. “I want people to know I have gone through this, but have survived this nightmare. “I want other victims to not be ashamed either, so I hope this could pose as an example. Shame and stigma is a large piece in sexual assault, maybe even a reason why people don’t report it. “And if people work together and not express shame, then I think it will help.”

next day. Leger drank beer, and the two girls drank Palm Bay coolers he had purchased for them. They sat around a large campfire, and at one point K.W. went with Leger for an ATV ride. It was then that Leger got her onto the back of the ATV, and violently raped the 15-year-old – something he claims not to remember. Back at the campsite, K.W. said her best friend immediately knew something was wrong. “My eyes were huge. I was in a panic and started bawling my eyes out. I told her and she started saying, ‘No, no, no, no.’ “My life just changed all of a sudden.” Police were called and Leger was arrested before his wife arrived at the campsite.

A teen who was raped by a friend’s stepfather in 2014 now wants to help other victims. ■■■■ During the entire trial, the diminutive Leger sat in the prisoner’s box, eliciting no emotion, even when the terrible details about what he did to a young girl were read to the court. Through his lawyer, he said he accepts the court’s verdict but he has not apologized, he did not plead guilty and he claims he does not recall the violent rape that may have left the young woman unable to have children. “He cannot speak to the truth of it himself,” Leger’s lawyer Vincent Michaels told the court. His lawyer even suggested Leger was a victim as he has suffered financially, socially and emotionally since the rape, particularly because his second wife left him within three months of the incident. “This is now the second family he has lost,” Michaels told the court, referring to his first common-law relationship that ended acrimoniously. Michaels also suggested to the court that since Leger blacked out that night, something that had never happened before, it is a “reasonable possibility” that someone spiked his drink. For K.W., that’s a ridiculous suggestion. Michaels went further and attempted to claim that Leger’s drunkenness could be a form of mitigating circumstance because the state makes people do things they wouldn’t otherwise. “That he chooses to get himself drunk is aggravating,” Crown counsel Grant Lindsey

EARN YOUR ECE CERTIFICATE IN LESS THAN A YEAR

Betty Urquhart Award recognizes community service The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is seeking nominations for the Betty Urquhart Community Service Award. The award recognizes an individual or a group who has made the Fraser Valley a better place to live and people who make everyday contributions to their community but who may not be recognized. Betty Urquhart was one of the first employees of the university and believed strongly in volunteering and giving back to the community. She passed away in 1995, but UFV keeps her memory alive by honouring a person or group exemplifying her commitment to life-long learning and community. Some past recipients of the award have included the Crystal Gala Foundation, Kosum Soni of Mission for her work with vulnerable communities, Veronica Back of Mission for her outreach activity, and Dr. Elizabeth Watt for her work with the Abbotsford Youth Health Centre. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 11. Nomination forms are available online at ufv.ca/board/bett y - u r q u h a r t - awa rd / or by calling Lori Ann Waites at 1-888-5047441 (local 2614) or emailing loriann. waites@ufv.ca.

OF THE WEEK Do you agree with the decision to cancel the Agrifair rodeo this year to reduce costs?

Refugees arriving So ironic. We bring others into this country and provide homes and all the necessities for them while some of our own citizens live in squalid conditions in tents. Mary McNeill

To answer, go to abbynews.com

Welcome, fellow humans who need saving from their war-torn country! Please try to ignore those who are not welcoming – they do not represent how we are as Canadians properly. Chelsea Michele Smith

LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:

Do you believe foreign property ownership is driving up real estate prices in the region?

Wonderful to hear our community doing its part to help. News flash, naysayers. Canada is a multicultural country, based and developed on this. It’s a sad day when we can find negative feelings about helping our neighbours. I hope everyone coming feels warm welcomes, a home, and an embracing community. Samantha Lordon

Unreliable information is true for the people supposedly sleeping in the hallways. The article further stated that 20 people came from the old buildings and today six remain. Once again, it casts a shadow of doubt over the Society. The

facts of fatality and a change to medical-dependent living played a big part of this. At our recent Lynnhaven Society meeting of management, directors, and 19 tenants, the sleeping item was brought up for

discussion and no one knew of this happening. The Lynnhaven Society is not perfect but both the management and the board of directors pay strict attention to the daily operations and Continued on A10

The Lynnhaven Society is an organization that provides low-cost housing for single seniors in the Abbotsford area. It started with a number of smaller single-floor units on Lynn Avenue shifting into two modern four-storey units on Braun Avenue. The housing changed but the care and attention to the tenants improved. As a director of the board, I was offended by the irresponsible article written in the Jan. 22 News. For all the good and responsible work that Lynnhaven has done to improve the living conditions for older people under stress, a reporter chooses to base a front-page article on poorly researched, extremely biased, and very unreliable information. There are a number of items that need correction. Yes, there were 54 calls made to the police, but 32 of them came from one disgruntled person. The same

Many studies have shown a significant link between hearing loss and dementia, which may lead to Alzheimer’s. Processing auditory information uses a significant portion of the brain. Sound travels through your ear to nerves that send signals to the brain. The sounds are processed in the brain putting the information from your ears into speech. But, if the brain cannot hear that information due to hearing loss, then brain activity lessens. This causes a reduction in gray matter of the brain over time. In other words, your brain shrinks! Patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s can receive appropriate hearing loss treatment, and in turn, reduce their cognitive decline. Therefore, it is imperative that those being diagnosed with dementia have hearing testing to determine if hearing loss is contributing to the patient’s dementia. The symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s can mimic hearing loss.

The Facts: • 83% of patients diagnosed with dementia also have hearing loss. • A mild hearing loss doubles the risk of dementia and a moderate hearing loss increases the risk of dementia fivefold.

• Mild hearing loss is linked to brain atrophy. Those with hearing loss have less gray matter and decreased brain activity in their auditory cortex. • Early treatment is essential in restoring cognitive function for speech perception.

WHEN TREATED WITH HEARING AIDS: • 33% of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s were reclassified to a less severe category. • Improvement in memory of patients with dementia increased, hearing aids can boost cognitive function 50% within a year.

February 10, 2016 Notice of Public Hearing to consider amendments to Abbotsford Zoning Bylaw, 2014; and Land Use Contract No. 141 Abbotsford Council will hold a Public Hearing at 7:00 pm on February 15, 2016, in the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford, B.C., under the provisions of the Local Government Act to consider the following bylaws. At the Public Hearing, all persons who believe their interest in property is affected by the proposed bylaws will be afforded a reasonable opportunity to be heard or to present written submissions respecting matters contained in the bylaws that are the subject of the hearing. The following is a synopsis of the bylaws amending the Zoning Bylaw and Land Use Contract No. 141 of the City of Abbotsford, and is not deemed to be an interpretation. A copy of each bylaw and relevant background documentation may be inspected in the Planning Services Division (2nd Floor), Abbotsford City Hall, 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford, B.C., on February 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15, 2016 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. the security of the two buildings. The City of Abbotsford has an excellent police force and fire department that quickly serve people in times of need. The Society cannot provide any added security beyond what all local multi-family residential units offer. All of this emergency information is placed at key points in the building. Management has a decade of strong established methods of screening people before they are allowed into the building. This is not done alone, as outside bodies are referenced for corroboration of information and all personal references are checked. All tenants sign off on this and the policies Lynnhaven has in place. Perhaps this is one of the many reasons why people enjoy living at Lynnhaven. Tyler Olsen, instead of meeting with disgruntled, former Lynnhaven tenants who were evicted for not following the rules, maybe next time you can attend the meeting with the board and all current tenants, to get the real sense of Lynnhaven’s operations. Pharmacy break-in warning Tracy HOLMES Black Press

Police in Surrey are on the hunt for at least two people involved in a series of pharmacy breakand-enters in Surrey, Abbotsford and Langley. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said there have been 12 incidents between Nov. 2 and Jan. 18, with most taking place in Surrey. “Of note, all the pharmacies are basically independent or smaller pharmacies,” he said. “Some of them, the point of entry is a neighbouring business.” Schumann said the culprits are mostly targeting safes that are used to store various narcotics. While the time-delay safes and other security mea-

sures are proving to be a deterrent, the thieves are making off with other items. There are no suspect descriptions as yet. However, police believe at least two people are involved, as well as a variety of vehicles, including a white Ford pickup, a Jeep Cherokee, a silver SUV and an older, blue, four-door sedan. It’s hoped that sharing what details are known will encourage people who spot anything or anyone out of the ordinary around such businesses in the early-morning hours to contact police. Schumann said while the activity may be deemed harmless, it’s possible an alert cit-

izen’s report “could crack this case wide open.” To report a crime in progress, call 911.

Suspicious activity or other information may also be reported in Abbotsford at 604-8595225.

The concert features Randy “Elvis” Friskie, Cassandra Friskie and the Extraordinaires. It takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. All proceeds go to support Greta Loewen, 6, who was diagnosed more than a year ago with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. She has since had ongoing treatment at BC Children’s Hospital and also travelled to LOEWEN Boston, where she received a type of radiation treatment not available in Canada, and to Toronto. Fundraisers throughout 2015 – including a bottle drive, a craft fair, an art auction and a book drive – have helped cover expenses such as medication, travel, meals and living costs, as mom Heather and dad Tim stay by Greta’s side. Tickets are $30 and are available at HOFA Art Supplies and Framing, King’s Music and House of James.

LOUISE HENRY Pair Home Design

No matter what you’re trying to sell, presenting it in the best possible condition will ensure you the best return. A professional home stager will provide you a written report suggesting ways to get focused, organized and prepared to list your home for top dollar.

Top-left photo submitted by Holley Landscaping; top-right photo submitted by Rootzone Landscaping & Design; bottom photo submitted by Eau Naturelle Water Features. Submitted photos may not be reflective of Home Expo feature.

GARDENS WITH WOW-FACTOR

Street appeal, removing clutter and de-personalizing your home, plus storage and pre-packing solutions are just some of the items that will be included in the report. Your professional home stager will also be able to suggest tradespeople to assist with the needed adjustments if you’re not able to do them yourself.

In addition to presentations at the show theatre, the 2016 Home & Garden Expo will have garden features for your enjoyment. Stroll through the displays and imagine the ambience you could add to your home with an outdoor display.

If you want your home sold faster, and for maximum dollar, you need to invest the time, energy and money it takes to make a positive first impression!

Special thanks to Holley Landscaping, Rootzone Landscaping & Design and Eau Naturelle Water Features and for their beautiful and inspirational creations!

The Mole Man

01/16W_FVWC27

Bert Pulles has been controlling moles for more than 20 years. He has been studying and researching the creatures for just as long – he even wrote a book about moles and their habits. He learned the trade from a farmer and began his business with just one trap. Now, Bert makes more than 10,000 traps a year and sells them to pest control companies as well as individuals across Canada and the United States.

QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST. SPECIALIZING IN CUSTOM HOMES & RENOVATIONS

His traps, called Mole Busters, are popular because they are easy to use. “Any trap on the market will catch a mole, but it’s the ease of use that makes my traps special, said Bert about his product, which is manufactured in Mission. The traps are based on a European design that has been around for 300 years. He demonstrates the mole buster and happily shares his knowledge at local garden shops and trade shows. Bert is a familiar face at the Fraser Valley Home and Garden Expo in Abbotsford. He returns to the Tradex stage every year to share his knowledge.

Pilots continue fight for first Abby wins conference with two more victories Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

With just two games remaining in the Pacific Junior Hockey League season, the Abbotsford Pilots can make their first-place dreams a reality, as long as they continue winning. The Pilots picked up another win on Friday at home, besting the Richmond Sockeyes 6-4. Erik Olson opened the scoring, but the Sockeyes tied the game up late in the first period. Richmond took the lead just 56 seconds into the second period, but the Pilots responded with four unanswered goals in the second period to cruise to the win. Sean Olson, Francis Bamford (two), and Cole Methorst all tallied in the second

after the win. They remain just two points behind the first-place Mission City Outlaws, but do have one game in hand. Abbotsford head coach Jim Cowden said his team turned it on when they had to. “Our first five minutes of the second period weren’t that strong and they kind of took it to us,” he said. “But then BEN LYPKA Abbotsford News we found a bit of a Pilots forward Alexander Methorst finds some open ice groove and took over against the Richmond Sockeyes on Friday. the second and third. PJHL season. He said he likes the fact his team controls its own destiny. “We should beat Langley [this coming Friday] and I think first place in the conference will come down to that final game with Mission,” he said. “We still have some work to do as a team, but it doesn’t really matter who we play in the first round.” He said he’d like to play Mission in round one, despite the fact that it isn’t mathematically possible. The Pilots next play the Langley Knights on Friday at home, and then conclude the season against the Outlaws in Mission on Saturday. If the Pilots win on Friday, then the winner of Saturday’s game is the Harold Brittain conference champion, and will get home ice advantage throughout the Brittain conference playoffs. The conference-winning team gets the Port Moody Panthers in round one, while the second-place team squares off with the Aldergrove Kodiaks. OT pain for CBC women Team loses pair in overtime, men drop two Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

Things are getting tight in the Pacwest women’s basketball standings, but the CBC Bearcats still remain in the hunt for an elusive postseason berth. The women’s team battled back from a fourpoint deficit at halftime to send the game into overtime against the Capilano Blues on Friday. The extra frame saw the Blues outscore CBC 10-9 to pick up the narrow 91-90 win. Harvina Kaler had a great all-around game, with 30 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Mandy Van Delden and Deanna Esau added 16 points apiece. The Bearcats shot a sizzling 49 per cent from the field, but were outrebounded and committed six more turnovers than the Blues. The women returned to action on Saturday to battle the top-ranked Douglas College Royals, and again came up short with a 65-60 loss. The fourth quarter was the killer for the Bearcats, as they led most of the game but only scored five points, and the game went to overtime for the second straight game. The Royals outscored CBC 16-11 in the extra period to earn the win. Kaler scored a teamhigh 13 points, with Vanessa Funk adding 12. The Bearcats were outrebounded by 17. The pair of heartbreaking setbacks drops CBC’s record to five wins and 11 losses on the season. They are tied with the Camosun Chargers for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Pacwest. The struggles continue for the CBC Bearcats men’s basketball team, who are in serious risk of missing the playoffs. CBC started hot against the Blues on Friday, opening up a 19-8 lead after the first quarter, but the lead evaporated by the second. Capilano outscored CBC by 14 in the second half to win 79-64. Mitch Krahn led the team with 19 points, while Elijah Calhoun and Umbori Watson added 16 and 14 points respectively.

The hot start and poor finish trend continued on Saturday against the Royals, as CBC had a 20-15 lead after the first quarter, but stumbled the rest of the way to lose 68-58. The Bearcats allowed 27 points off the 31 turnovers they committed to

allow the game to slip away. Watson had a big game, with 21 points and 15 rebounds, with Calhoun contributing with 21 points and seven rebounds. The men’s team falls to two wins and 14 losses on the season, and will need wins in all

their remaining games and help from other teams’ results to make the postseason. The teams hit the road this weekend, playing the Langara Falcons and the Quest Kermodes on Friday and Saturday. They return home for games on Feb. 19 and 20.

LONGSTAFF Clancy

GOERTZ

September 13, 1948 ~ January 16, 2016

Rev. Lester M.

It is with heavy hearts we announce Clancy’s passing on January 16, 2016, surrounded by his family after a 21 year struggle with MS. Clancy will always be remembered as having a kind and generous heart. He loved to laugh and had a wicked sense of humour. He left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He leaves behind his wife Cathy of 32 years, children Donnie (Courtney), Carly (Mike) and Barclay (Connie), brother Rick, grandchildren Alexa, Danica and Marco, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Many thanks to the staff at the Residence in Mission for taking such good care of Clancy. Please join us to remember Clancy on Saturday, February 20, 2016, 1 pm - 5 pm at Donnie’s home, 6438 258th St., Langley. In lieu of flowers a donation to the MS Society or Elizabeth’s Wildlife, P.O. Box 15015 Sevenoaks, Abbotsford, BC V2S 8P1 would be appreciated.

After a long, courageous battle with cancers, and spending precious time with family at his side, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Les Goertz, passed away peacefully at home February 2, 2016, aged 76. Born March 5, 1939 in Waldheim, SK, Les relocated as a young boy to the Fraser Valley with his family. In 1962, he married the love of his life, Vernagean Nelson in Vancouver, BC. They raised three children while living in various cities in BC and Washington State. An ordained minister, Les pastored for over 40 years at churches in Canada and the USA, counselled and mentored many individuals, conducted seminars in North America and overseas, established hospice programs at hospitals, and advised businesspeople and elected officials. He graduated from Bethany Bible College and earned a master’s degree in ministry from Trinity Western University. Les founded Church Evangelism Ministries and later authored and published ‘Not-Yet-Christian’, a book about the stages people go through in their journey of faith. He had a great passion for people - he enjoyed spending time talking over a cup of hot chocolate or while ‘fitting puzzle’ or rooting for the Canucks. Les was especially proud of his grandchildren and loved to cheer them on at their events, rain or shine. Predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Katherine (Berg) Goertz, and his brothers-in-law, Dave Bergstrom and Doug Nelson, Les is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Vernagean (Nelson) Goertz, daughter Christine (Tom) Nichols, son Mike (Kristen) Goertz, daughter Camille (Phil) Goddard, grandchildren Jacob, Olivia, Grace, Kristen, Heidi, Jillian, and great-granddaughter Airlyn. Also survived by sister Elma Bergstrom, brothers Cliff (Norma) Goertz and Ray (Denise) Goertz, sisters-in-law Cheryl Nelson, Cathy (Dennis) Stromme, Dianne (Rod) Neufeld, Janet Sabados, and brothers-in-law Curt (Patrice) Nelson and Brad (Julie) Nelson, aunts Annie Goertz and Alma Goertz, uncles Ed Goertz and Herman Berg, numerous nieces and nephews, a large extended family, and a far reaching network of people who came into contact with Les over the years and who loved him - he loved them back dearly. Many thanks to the doctors and healthcare professionals who supported Les over the years, especially this past month. We take comfort in knowing that his journey in eternity continues and that he is rejoicing with those who have gone on before. Please join us in celebrating his life. The Visitation with family and viewing will be held Thursday, February 11, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, BC. The Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 13, 1:00 pm, at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly (south bldg.), 3145 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford, BC, followed by a reception at Cedar Brook Baptist Church (north bldg. at same address). Online condolences to the family may be made at www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church Evangelism Ministries (CEM) or a charity of your choice.

OBITUARIES

STENNER Gordon Venning Born September 5, 1936 Gordon passed away peacefully on February 5, 2016 at 79 years young. Venning originates from the English title “Bog”. Gordon’s name originates from the Scottish Berwickshire of Gourdon in the département of France from the Olde Gaelic “gor”, meaning “large spacious fort, a fortified place of strength, stronghold occupied by protection”. Clearly his name represents the amazing person he was. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Gordon was raised with his younger sibling and sister, Barbara. As a youth Gordon played as a baseball pitcher and was asked to play for the St. Louis Cardinals. He chose to pastor/preach in Blaine, Washington where he started his family. Gordon will be remembered by the public for his career as a well-known Investment Advisor, a bestselling author - “Stenner on Mutual Funds”, and a radio talk show host on CKNW and CFUN. Gordon’s children include Thane, Lisa, Justyn, Leighton and Tanya, who miss him dearly. Gordon celebrates in Heaven with his 2nd youngest daughter Vanessa, his wife of 50 years Zenovia, his father Edwin Thomas (Poplar Sexsmith England) and his mother Hilda Maude Marr (Portsmouth, England). His (past and present) daughters-in-law are Kimberley, Anita, Darci and Lori. As well as his sons-in-law David, Jason, Ray and Bernie. He will be greatly missed by his 14 grandchildren Dustin, Chelsea, Vaughn, Chantel, Miranda, Seth, Gabrielle, Benjamin, Justynne, Tage, Ray Jr., Alexia, Royce, Chanel. In addition to his great-grandson Maverick and great-granddaughter Ava. Gordon adored family, yachting/boating, fishing/the ocean, animals, nature, trains, travel, fishing, swimming, jogging, writing, reading (an avid bookworm spending hours at Chapters drinking his tea), photography and an avid hockey fan. Gordon’s legacy will include his endless energy, generosity, fun sense of humour, family “pow-wows”, his incredible ability to fully engage in and celebrate life. Loved by so many, he is remembered as an accomplished man - one of integrity, strength, humour, charm, charisma, conversation, generosity, kindness, resilience, caring, respected, loyal and tender. He loved the Lord wholeheartedly and his contagious smile will comfort our hearts and memories. Gordon Venning Stenner, you were an amazing partner, father, brother, friend, hubby, Grampa (‘Gee-Pa’) and GreatGrampa. A great teacher. Offering wise words, endless hugs, I-Love-You’s and dropped what you were doing to make time to chat for hours. You were a selfless person giving tirelessly. If anyone needed help, you were the first to offer care and take interest in each person you met. You placed “people” before work and monetary things. You never stopped being a father, not only to your own children but nurtured others. A great friend. Cute. Athletic. Well liked. Fun. Funny. Witty. Unselfish. Courageous. An inspiration. A sweetheart. You will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing you. Always making others laugh. Your goofy jokes will be missed. You are remarkable. Forever Cherished. We love you toooo much “Gordo”! A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Friday, February 19th at 11:00 am at Northview Church located at 32040 Downes Road, Abbotsford, BC (604) 853-2931. Donations may be left at Northview Community Church for Missions. Tributes and condolences may be left at:
