tion. “I was very impressed with how they stood behind us for the event.” He said he is pleased to donate to a worthwhile cause. “It is quite a bit of money and it will all stay in town,”
he said. Sawyer is planning to organize another bullarama next year. “We’ve booked it for next year,” he said. “We are open to suggestions as to what charity to support at that time,” he added.

Sunnie and Justin Ride chat with Fingerprints Playschool teacher Jenny Stout at the Rimbey Christian School while their baby, 15-month-old Oakley plays with toys. The family stopped in at the Rimbey Christian School during the open house held last Thursday.
Vernanda Buwalda, development director for Rimbey Christian School is ready to greet the public at an open house held last Thursday.
Rimbey Christian School holds open house BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey Christian School opened its doors last Thursday for a few hours so the public could get an inside view of the school and enjoy a visit and tour. Principal Edith Dening said the open house was a way to promote the school, which is going through a slight decline in enrolment. “A lot of people don’t even know we are here,” she said. “We want them to get a feel for the school and learn what we are all about.” The school, which houses Kindergarten to Grade 9 students, as well as Fingerprints Playschool, is a great place for children to learn and grow, she said. Classes are small, no more than 14 students, giving teachers the opportunity to give more individual attention to those who are struggling or needing more of a challenge. “No student goes unnoticed,” said Dening. “Every child’s needs gets addressed quickly.” Dening said there is a very strong community within the school. Programs which encourage Grade 4/5 students to be buddies with kindergarten and Grade 1 students and Grade 8/9 students to buddy up with Grade 2/3 students are ongoing. The Fingerprints Playschool is available for children aged three to five and is a vibrant program that is proving to be popular and attracting new families. The Alberta curriculum is taught at the school and students write government exams, often achieving higher than average marks. Options, including sports programs are offered. Bible classes are taught at the school and religion is infused into daily lessons. The school has 13 teachers and support staff as well as a secretary, business administrator, development director and janitor. Dening has been at the school for 11 years, and has been principal for five years.
She loves the school. “It is a good place to be. We have very committed families and there is a strong community within the school.”

Treena Mielke On The Other Side “Let’s go to the corner.” Although it was long ago and I was but a child, not yet old enough to drive a car, but old enough to ride my bike using no hands all the way there, I hear the words in my mind. All the way there was probably not much more than a few city blocks, but it was a gravel road and to get to the corner you had to cross a highway, which even in those days, if memory serves me correctly, was busy. I think of those words, “let’s go to the corner,” every time I drive by that old corner store, which I do quite often as it is in route to my daughter’s house. The store is falling

case, which, for some reason, I found quite fascinating. In those days you could buy a bottle of pop and a chocolate bar for less than a quarter if you were lucky enough, of course, to have a quarter. The corner store was part of the small town I grew up in. The town should probably be referred to a hamlet as it had not much more than one street and pretty much all of us lived on that one street. To me, at least, the hamlet boasted some, if not all of the necessities of life. It had a school. The school, when I was growing up, only went to Grade 6 and then, all kids, even
those of us who were less than brave and did not want to, had to go to this great big high school. The great big school housed all the kids from all the little one-street towns nearby as well as all the farm kids who lived in-between. They called it amalgamation. I didn’t like it. I liked coming home for lunch and playing catch with my dad or my brother in my front yard, which, with a little imagination, could easily be turned into a ball field. The town also had two grain elevators, at least it did until one of them burned down, and then, a
few years later, the second one disappeared too, along with the railroad tracks and the station house. The general stores were probably the last to go. But in my mind’s eye, I see it all again. The way we were. The store, alive and full of customers, my brother, sitting inside, the pages of a newspaper scattered in front of him, and me, riding my bike, no hands, down a gravel road on my way to the corner. And then the image is gone, and I’m back to the present. But I remember. And I can only hope I will always remember. The way we were!

down, sticking out like a poor wounded appendage on the prairie landscape, a desolate eyesore, interrupting the fresh face of spring as it slowly springs to life, nodding and quivering and shaking itself free of winter’s clutches. Some of its windows are gaping holes, others are boarded up and the whole place cries of desolation and loneliness. But, it wasn’t always like that. And every time I drive by, I see, in the camera lens of my mind, the flash of a memory and the way it was. It was a busy store, thriving and always full of customers. It seems to me that the door had a bell that jingled when you walked in and I think there were stools around a short counter. They must have sold newspapers there, because I remember the storeowner saying my brother could tear a newspaper apart like nobody he ever knew, reading it from cover to cover. I remember thinking, “is that a good thing? Should I be proud or embarrassed?” The store also had a meat counter with a glass
I always like getting stuff in the mail. Lately anything I receive is usually from Amazon’s website. The package is either an old blues CD or a new book. The other day I had a parcel waiting for me at the post office: The volume one summary of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada arrived. It was as recent as within the last year I first heard of the residential schools
that existed in Canada. I felt a great deal of cognitive dissonance when I learned what occurred to the aboriginal children kept and (for lack of a better term) incarcerated at these schools. I didn’t like hearing Canadians were responsible for attempting cultural genocide. In 2008 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada was formed. Justice Murray Sinclair, the first aboriginal judge in Manitoba and Chair of the TRC, spoke at Red Deer College’s Perspective Speaker Series on March 30, 2016. I attended. Part of Justice Sinclair’s presentation included a series of small video interviews with intergenerational survivors and di-
rect survivors of the residential school systems that were in Canada. I had to dry my eyes a few times. I was hearing that Canadians were responsible for the beatings and raping of children within Canada. Justice Sinclair’s presentation brought light to the fact that residential schools have a fresh history in the true north, strong and free. While white kids during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were happily singing O’ Canada in the school halls, aboriginal children were taken (sometimes) forcibly from his or her families and placed in residential schools. While the white kids were learning literature and world history,
aboriginal children were abused and indoctrinated in attempts to “take the Indian out of the Indian”. These residential schools weren’t something that existed and happened in a faraway place and a faraway time. The psychological, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse that occurred to children (not adults, but children) is very real and is very current. The tears of the survivors are still flowing. The oppression of indigenous populations in Canada is built right into Canada’s foundations. Sir John A. Macdonald is infamously known for saying, “when the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages, and though he may learn to read
and write, his habits and training mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who can read and write.” The guy that said this about human beings appears on our purple ten dollar bill. There is a lot I don’t know about the abrasive history in Canada. But what I do know now is that it happened. How do Canadians repair this? I don’t know. That is why I had a book arrive in my mail box. I’m going to do my best to learn, educate myself, and understand how situations like this, that darken Canada’s history, happened and what can be done to repair the damages inflicted upon human beings. My veil of ignorance is slowly being lifted.

A memorial moment that happened at the playground BY IRENE LOVELL The playground construction in Bluffton was completed on a cool and windy day in June, 2014. It was two years in the planning. What made it memorable for me was the final few hours. Volunteers had been working for four days assembling the equipment and curbing. Now was the time to spread the required pea gravel. It was 3:30 p.m. A nasty, windy day. Down the road came a group of elementary school kids. “Can we help?” Do you
have any shovels we could use?” Shovels were distributed. More kids arrived. More shovels distributed. A mom arrived with her two-year-old who brought his own yellow plastic shovel. Marvelous mayhem ensued. Then came the adults with their potluck supper. The vehicles were parked in a circle to break the wind. A table was set up and chairs were found. There was food for all. Happy kids. Smiling neighbors. Truly a marvelous memorable volunteer moment in Bluffton.

Volunteering valuable for future career plans BY THOMAS ANGLIN
I found the volunteering experience at the Rimbey hospital to be very informative and fulfilling. The staff were initially not too sure about what to do with me, but over time I developed
a bit of a work niche with the help of the nurses and the unit clerk in particular. I helped out with handing out the breakfast and lunch trays as well as restocking the laundry and medical supply carts. The physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff were very quick to make use of me when they came down and needed an extra hand or two. Physiotherapy quickly became the highlight of my day, as it al-
lowed me to learn about a wide variety of physical and mental states in a hands-on way. This was a positive experience overall, and I really appreciated the opportunity that it afforded me to be working alongside hospital staff. As I am planning on going to medical school, this has been a very informative experience, and I hope to continue with this in greater measure in the future.

RIMBEY REVIEW 7
Volunteer spirit alive and well in Rimbey, many active volunteers in community BY TREENA MIELKE The volunteer spirit in Rimbey is alive and well and the many citizens who commit their time and talents to improve the quality of life for the entire community are receiving special recognition this week. At council’s March 30 meeting, Mayor Rick Pankiw proclaimed April 10 to 16 as volunteer week in Rimbey. “There is a lot of volunteer hours spent in Rimbey,” said interim CAO Donna Tona, who recommended the mayor proclaim the week as volunteer appreciation week. “Doing so will ensure volunteers, who are an essential service to many organizations, are duly recognized for their tireless hours of support and dedication to so many causes.” Pankiw said the community is fortunate to have such a strong volunteer base. “We are very blessed in Rimbey to have the number of people, young and old, who volunteer. It truly is what makes Rimbey a special place. The countless hours that volunteers put in is truly amazing.” Executive director of Rimbey FCSS, Peggy Makofka said
volunteers play a vital role in many areas. Volunteers help out at the food bank, meals on wheels, help pack school supplies and participate in the friendly visitor program. The program, which has been set up so that shut ins who may find themselves alone due to an illness or because a loved one has passed away, provides volunteers who visit either through a phone call or in person. “We get referrals from home care for that program,” said Makofka, adding there is a waiting list.” Volunteers also help run the community kitchen, a program which gives small groups an opportunity to cook meals for their families under supervision of an experienced cook. Ten kitchens a year are set up in the provincial building. The volunteer Centre, which operates under the umbrella of FCSS, has access to a database of about 400 volunteers. Non-profit groups in need of volunteers may notify the volunteer co-ordinator who in turn notifies volunteers who are willing to help out.

Makofka said the concept is good, but clear communication and plenty of notice between the groups in need of volunteers and the volunteers themselves is crucial to making it work. She said sometimes volunteers will show up at a designated location only to find out no one knows who they are or why they are there and their time has been wasted. Resources about writing policies and bylaws and other information helpful to volunteer organizations are also available through the volunteer centre. The Rimbey and District Volunteer Week Committee, chaired by Lane Dahms, held its annual volunteer dinner Mon., April 11. This year’s theme was ‘volunteers are part of the ripple effect’. Makofka said this is a fitting theme. “It just takes one person to see another person helping out and then they start helping out, too. The end result is it makes our community a better place and people feel included and supported and truly part of the community.”

RIMBEY REVIEW 9
Rental agreement between town and airport caretaker to be negotiated BY TREENA MIELKE A rental agreement between the Town of Rimbey and Evelyn Prince, the caretaker of the town’s airport, is still up in the air. Prince met with council at its March 30 meeting to discuss a letter she had received notifying her that the town wanted to change her contract and begin charging her rent. Prince and her husband, who passed away in 2008, had purchased a mobile home on airport property which belongs to the town 23 years ago. At that time town officials agreed that the couple would live on the property and perform caretaking duties in exchange for rent. The arrangement worked well, with the Prince couple performing caretaking duties, looking after maintenance and being watchdogs for the town if any suspicious activity was going on. She noted that pilots who leave their planes at the hangers do so with the assurance that someone is there to keep an eye on the place. Prince makes arrangements to pay someone to check on the airport property when she is away. Council sold the runway lights several months ago to the Lacombe Flying Club, who made $1,000 donation to the skateboard park in exchange for the lights. The airport lights were installed in the early ‘80s and some work was done on the system in 2006. However, public works foreman Rick Schmidt told council the wiring had been severely damaged due to rodents. Prince said she saw a helicopter, she believed to be a STARS air ambulance landing at about 9 p.m. this year before Alberta switched to daylight savings time. She said it would have been difficult landing. “It is pitch black there, there is not even a yard light.” The previous CAO for the town was to have notified Transport Canada that the lights had been removed to ascertain the airport is licensed for landing only during daylight hours. After more than two decades of being caretaker for the airport, Prince thought things were going well. She said she saw the situation as a win/win. Taxes
for the property are paid to the County of Ponoka and she pays her own power and looks after her own garbage. “I do really like it,” she said. “I don’t cost the town anything and I don’t ask for anything.” When she received a letter from the town she made an appointment to attend a council meeting as a delegation so as to gain a better understanding of what
“I DON’T COST THE TOWN ANYTHING AND I DON’T ASK FOR ANYTHING.” - EVELYN PRINCE
was required of her. Suggestions of charging rental fees ranging from $250 to $500 a month were brought up by councilors at the March 30 meeting. However, interim CAO Donna Tona said she would draw up a new contract and sit down with Prince at a time yet to be arranged to negotiate rent as well as the duties she was expected to perform.

Roughstock series draws to a close BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey Roughstock winter series finals drew to a close last Saturday night at the Agrim Centre, marking the end of a successful season. Cory Glenn, who organized the series along with his wife Stacey, said the last event of the season was well attended. “We had the biggest crowd ever, Saturday night,” he said. The roughstock series has consisted of 33 weeks of practices and six jackpots, during which time more than 800 bulls and 500 horses were ridden. “It’s been a heck of a go,” said Glenn. Saturday’s jackpot saw Luke Ferber winning the junior bull competition with 72 points, followed by Cater Sahli with 70 points. The novice horse category went to Chase Barass with 76 points, Jake Plotts with 74 points and Logan Elder with 70 points. The winner of the bareback competition was Denton Metzger with 78 points, followed by Clay Deley with 75 points, Dylan Bilton with 74 points and Stawbs Jones with 74 points. The winner of the saddle bronc was Kelsey Koening with 72 points. The bull riding winner was Armondo Daville with 81 points and Justin Seimens with 73 points. Glenn is grateful to all volunteers, stock contractors, pickup men and bullfighters who made the event possible. He also thanked Whitgan creations for making the championship jackets. “Hope to see you all in the fall,” he said.

Volunteering for horticultural group brings great rewards BY KATHY SARSON RIMBEY & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL GROUP Our group volunteers in Rimbey and area to keep horticulture growing while we learn of the history and to keep the organization going for many years to come. I enjoy meeting new people while learning about the history of horticulture from our most experienced members of our group, as well as passing the information to the younger generation to encourage all to be involved with our horticulture show in August every year. I have many memorable moments with this group, but one in particular comes to mind. I had just moved to Alder Flats and wanted to check out the Farmers Market in Rimbey at Pas Ka Poo Park. It was there where I met a friend who helped me move out west. She mentioned there might be a few projects in the show book which would be interested in entering in the show. I skimmed through the book with only two weeks to go before the show. Then I baked a couple of items and found a few photos and crafts. I
managed to put together eight projects for the Horticulture Show. The next day while driving back to Rimbey to pick up my exhibits from the show, I was thinking about how it would be great to bring home at least one red ribbon, since I had never won a ribbon in the past. I was amazed and excited to see that I’d won a ribbon for all eight exhibits and five of them were red. That was it. I was hooked. There was no doubt about it as I had also won money. I joined the group in the fall of 2008 and rather enjoy passing on the information I learn to others I meet. I went on to earn three ‘best of show’ ribbons a few years later. Then last year was extremely memorable when I saw the great excitement of two little girls after their names were called at the Horticulture Show Awards for most points in their age groups. This brought back great memories for me and I’m excited to see what the girls bring to the show this year. I hope they encourage the younger generation to be more involved with horticulture just like I encouraged them.

RIMBEY REVIEW 13
Student athletes celebrate achievements at Red Deer College Student-athletes celebrated at 2016 RDC Athletic Awards Night SUBMITTED Red Deer, April 5 – Red Deer College Athletics wrapped up another outstanding season at the 2016 RDC Athletic Awards Night, held on Monday, April 4. The highlight of the evening was the 2016 Red Deer Bottling Outstanding Athlete of the Year awards, which were presented to Emily Swier from Queens Hockey and Luke Brisbane from Kings Volleyball. “It’s very humbling to be recognized with this award,” says Brisbane, a Kings Volleyball team captain who will be returning to RDC for the 2016-17 season. “This year, I had an opportunity to play with a lot of good players, and there were multiple players on my team that could have received this award, not to mention athletes on other teams, as well.” Swier also feels honoured to receive the prestigious award. “RDC is like home to me, and this is an incredible feeling after our team had such a great season,” says Swier, who finished the season tied for first in league scoring and plans on returning to RDC next fall. “I certainly didn’t expect to receive this award, because the nominees in this category are such incredible athletes, but it’s truly an honour to be recognized.” The ceremonies honoured the achievements of student-athletes, team officials, volunteers and athletic staff, with 55 awards, scholarships and academic excellence awards presented. “RDC has established a tremendous legacy in Athletics, and each year our student-athletes work hard to continue this tradition,” says Diane St-Denis, RDC Athletic Director. “The Awards Night allows us to celebrate their athletic, academic and other achievements from the past year.” The 2016-17 season was strong for RDC’s Athletics
program, with 10 of 11 teams making playoffs, the Queens Hockey and Kings Volleyball teams winning ACAC titles and the Kings Volleyball team going on to win the national CCAA title. Other teams and individuals won silver and bronze medals in their divisions, and many athletes received all-star, athlete of the week and other recognitions. In addition, 86 student-athletes excelled in academics, having a GPA of 3.0 or better, with 17 on the Dean’s List, and one student-athlete receiving the CCAA Academic All Canadian award.
“IT’S VERY HUMBLING TO BE RECOGNIZED WITH THIS AWARD.” - LUKE BRISBANE
The 2016 RDC Athletic Awards Night provided an opportunity to recognize students, and it was also possible thanks to strong involvement from student-athletes and students from the School of Creative Arts. “This event was the epitome of cross-collaboration between different Schools,” St-Denis explains. “Students from Athletics were very involved with planning the event and students from Creative Arts were involved with all aspects of producing the show. This was a great opportunity to not only showcase the achievements of student-athletes, but also to provide experiential learning for a wide variety of students.” RDC | 100 College Boulevard | Box 5005 | Red Deer | AB | Canada | T4N 5H5 | Bus: 403.342.3300 | Fax: 403.340.8940 | www. rdc.ab.ca Additional 2016 RDC Athletic Awards recipients included: Co-Winners of the ACAC Minor Officials Award -

Me and mom and taxes BY CHRISTINE FERNIE, CPA SPECIAL TO RIMBEY REVIEW
Last week I wrote about the deadlines around taxes and tax slips and the options for filing your tax return. If you did the income portion of your taxes from the GET BACK on track! Bad credit? Bills? information provided last week, you will Unemployed? Need money? We lend! If you be ready to go after all the deductions you own your own home have available. you qualify. Pioneer Acceptance Corp. Member It is up to YOU to know what deductions BBB. 1-877-987-1420; are available and a great place to figure this www.pioneerwest.com. out is at the Canada Revenue Agency website where you can look up all deductions at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/tpcs/ ncm-tx/rtrn/cmpltng/ddctns/menu-eng. html. As we age, medical expenses are a category where many deductions are missed so that is where I want to focus this Transportation week. #5000-5300 If you (or a parent) live in Rimbey and have to travel to Red Deer, Innisfail or Edmonton for medical appointments, you Motorcycles may be eligible to claim medical travel expenses. Where public transportation is not readily available and you must travel at least 40 kms one way from home, you may

be able to claim vehicle expenses. If you are eligible, you can choose a detailed method or you can claim mileage at the Alberta rate of $.455/km (2014) or $.445/km (2015) cents per km. If the appointment is further than 80 kms from home, you may be eligible to claim a hotel, meals and parking. Keep all of your appointment notices and expense receipts. If you required someone to drive you (eye appointments and surgery normally require this), keep the paperwork that says so. If you have meals, you can choose the detailed method with receipts or you may choose a standard rate of $17 for each meal to a maximum of $51 per day. If you have a PRIVATE health plan, it’s helpful to process all CLAIMS to December 31 before mid-February because you can claim the non-reimbursed portion of prescriptions, medical, dental, eye care and other expenses on your tax return. If you have a private plan, who pays the premiums? Private health plan premiums are usually paid directly from your pay or pension and show up on pay or pension statements, but do NOT show up on T-slips.
KIDS Activities
Therefore, you must check your last pay slip for the year for the annual cost or multiply your premium by the number of pay periods in a year. If you or someone you care for is severely disabled, consider the DISABILITY DEDUCTION. The first time you claim, the doctor must complete form T2201. Read the form carefully and you will be able to figure out if you qualify for the credit. I believe these are the medical deductions individuals most overlook and they may add up to hundreds or thousands of dollars. You can choose any 12 month period that has not previously been claimed so check to see if there is 12 months ending in 2015 of claimable expenses including your private health care plan premiums that exceed 3% of your income. This does NOT include cosmetic surgery unless it was medically essential. Be sure to refer to the CRA website for lists of medical deductions and the details about what is claimable and what conditions must be met. Next week, I will write about other deductions and things you should consider when preparing your tax return.

RIMBEY REVIEW 19
The difference between a true leader and a toxic leader not too hard to figure out I’ve been in the newspaper business for going on 24 years now, and seen a lot of people come and go. Before that, I’d been working full or part time since I was a teenager. Some of my bosses have been true leaders. Some haven’t. Some of the most interesting folks I’ve worked for, whether it was in the newspaper business, contracting, bartending, security or the sports world could easily be described as a “toxic leader. I’m not talking about the day to day stuff that happens (one editor who employed me actually forgot to pay the entire staff one time), I’m talking about stuff that could land you in a padded room. I had one editor I worked for about 20 years ago who often changed details in my story that were correct, then made them incorrect. Then, when a reader phoned in to complain, he’d freak out on me. One time, he freaked out so much he pulled a filing cabinet drawer out of a cabinet and threw it at me. Luckily, I was in my 20’s so I moved quickly. Another fellow I worked for decided to take an office from my department and give it to someone else in the operation

worked in, from construction to licensed establishments to security to newspapers. Friends of mien who work in government, medicine, police and education tell me the same thing: these people seem to be everywhere. According to Psychology Today, “Psychopathy is among the most difficult disorders to spot. The psychopath can appear normal, even charming. Underneath, they lack conscience and empathy, making them manipulative, volatile and often (but by no means always) criminal. This kind of person doesn’t even recognize other people: they’re simply objects to be used then discarded. For myself, I’ve always been the best employee when I have a leader I can look up to, respect or even admire. As a manager at the Pipestone Flyer, I try as best I can to be that kind of leader. And since I recently turned 45 years of age, I am too old to be hurling filing cabinet drawers across the room. Stu Salkeld is the new editor of the Leduc/ Wetaskiwin Pipestone Flyer and writes a regular column for the paper.
