Another leak found in water main By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

There has been another leak found in the new multi-million dollar water main extension from Metro Vancouver to Aldergrove. “The contractor has recently confirmed that a leak has now been detected at a pipe joint around 246 Street,” said councillor Bob Long this week. The contractor is now in the process of draining the system to be able to undertake the necessary repairs. “The cause of leak is unknown at this time, but investigation is underway, in collaboration with the consultants, contractors and pipe manufacturer. All of those parties will be present for the repair currently scheduled for early next week,” said Long. The water main extension is the single largest infrastructure project ever under-

taken by the Township of Langley, at a cost of $12 million. The new water main serves Murrayville, east Langley, Gloucester Industrial Estates as well as Aldergrove. The water main was to have been operational by this spring but has been delayed by the need for repair to a couple of serious leaks found in the system during tests. The costs of those repairs have been borne by the contractors and pipe suppliers, so far. Aldergrove and Gloucester is currently served by eight Township-owned water wells, and due to a declining water table, particularly in the dry summer months, there are severe water use restrictions required at times in Aldergrove. Once the new water main is operational, the Metro Vancouver water will be blended with the Aldergrove well water for provision to local water users.

This will ensure reliable supplies of water to the community as well as keep costs down as the Metro Vancouver water will be metered and paid for based on usage. This will also result in Aldergrove having the same water restrictions as the rest of Metro Vancouver, and Aldergrove will not have the severe stage 3 restrictions it has endured in recent summers unless those restrictions are also required in the rest of Metro Vancouver. The reliable water supply will also enable new residential development in Aldergrove, which has been hampered by capacity of water and sanitary sewer service. A new, multi-million dollar sewer main from Aldergrove and Gloucester to Metro Vancouver’s treatment plants was completed a couple years ago and is now operational.

Imagine coming to your work or home and discovering that someone had ripped off part of your roof in an attempt to gain entry. This is what Heath McKenzie found when he came to work at his Cranky’s Bike Shop on Monday morning. About 150 square feet of asphalt roofing and shiplap sheathing had been torn off the shop’s roof in two places, on the front of the old wood frame building facing 272 Street, in the 2900block of the busy, mostly-commercial retail street. The would-be B&E artist failed to gain entry for all his work that night. In the early hours of Monday morning residential neighbours were awakened by the sounds of dogs barking and wood cracking and splintering. Neighbours investigated and found a man trying to break into Cranky’s Bike Shop by removing a large portion of the roof. However, what initially baffled McKenzie is that he was told that police, acting on complaints from the neighbour about the noise, had Damage to Cranky’s Bike Shop apprehended the suspect in roof has since been repaired. the act of breaking in, yet he returned twice to carry on with the dismantling of the roof until 7 a.m., at which point he apparently gave up. “The suspect is known to police,” added McKenzie, who has now spoken directly to the police officer who was on the scene that night. The officer came back on duty Friday and explained what he had witnessed to McKenzie. Acting on the original call the officer found the man on the roof, who claimed to be helping a raccoon get down. The officer told him he had to get down and took him into custody but as there was no visible damage and commercial trespass is a bylaw offence, he was let go. When the officer was called the second time the man leapt off the roof and fled on foot. The officer then was called to a case in Langley city and was unable to respond to complaints about the man returning to Cranky’s roof. It was this time that the most serious damage was done to the roof. Police told McKenzie that the suspect is a homeless man with substance abuse issues who has been occupying the ATM lobbies of the local banks and credit union. “They hope to charge him with mischief and thereby get a mandatory psychiatric assessment, and hopefully a positive solution,” said McKenzie. McKenzie and his friends have restored the roof.

Cat burglars strike Aldergrove Star

KURT LANGMANN PHOTO

A frustrated south Aldergrove resident has installed this sign on the front of his 24 Avenue acreage between 248 and 256 Streets, after his family and several others have been hit by night-time thieves. Items such as generators, utility trailers, tractors and even the front gates of residences have been stolen in recent weeks from several dozen homes in this neighbourhood. The suspect is believed to have pushed or dragged the goods to the street and then transported it away by truck. Residents are aiming to have a public meeting with Langley RCMP regarding measures to combat this rash of thefts.

Bag sets off alarm

Langley RCMP has recently received several reports of ‘cat burglaries’ in the Langley area. A cat burglary is defined as in incident in which a suspect breaks into a residence or into an attached residential garage overnight while people are at home asleep and is primarily undetected by the occupant of the home. The suspect in a March 30 incident was arrested shortly after the break-in trying to steal a television. He managed to flee the property with wallets and cash. He gained access to the residence through an insecure back door. A second break-in took place on April 1 when the suspect entered through the garage using the garage door opener left in a vehicle parked outside. The culprit stole a Rolex watch, a wallet and keys to a vehicle. Corporal Holly Largy, spokesperson for Langley RCMP, said, “With the warmer weather upon us, many will choose to leave doors and windows open to welcome the fresh air and sunshine. Please remember to consider security as well. It’s easy to forget windows have been left open

as you head to bed and unfortunately, this gives the criminal an opportunity. Make sure you do one last pass around the house in the evening to make sure all the possible entrance points have been properly secured. “Ideally, we would like to avoid this situation altogether. You wouldn’t normally leave your house key in your vehicle, and the door opener is practically a key to the palace. Please consider removing the opener from your vehicle each day, particularly when you are parking outside. “The second thing to remember is to lock your inner garage door so criminals aren’t able to access your home or family. Two small things can make such a difference.” Another consideration is that many people are starting their spring cleanups and have ladders around the house for window washing and the like. Remember, the ladder offers the culprits a key to your upper floors. Where you may have thought the windows were not a risk because they are second floor, they are now wide open for criminals with your offered “staircase.”

Protesters picket planned pool By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The Explosives Disposal Unit was called in to check out a suspicious duffle bag left on a bench in front of a business in the Gloucester business district early Tuesday morning, March 29. The duffel bag was discovered just before 5:30 a.m. in the 27000 block of Gloucester Way. The placement of the bag led to someone calling the Langley RCMP. Police set up a perimeter to ensure the safety of people in the area while the Explosives Disposal Unit looked into the bag. There was nothing of KURT LANGMANN PHOTO concern found inside, conProtest organizer Cathy Dunn and her sons collected petition signatures firmed Cpl. Holly Largy, Saturday calling for a larger indoor swimming pool. and police left the area.

Over the course of three hours protesters rallied outside the Fraser Highway location of the planned Aldergrove Recreation Centre Saturday. They unfurled a huge banner that called on Township council to build a larger multi-purpose aquatic centre instead of the outdoor facilities currently under construction. They gathered petition names as well, in their quest to have the project redesigned. Spokesperson Cathy Dunn said the planned 25-metre lane pool is too limited in its uses, and needs a deep end and a shallow end so that swim-

mers can jump in the deep end and the handicapped and infants can walk in the shallow end. She also says the larger pool needs to be enclosed. “Aldergrove needs something more inclusive, and our fear is that this won’t attract the numbers and so the Township will pull back on life guards and shut it down in the winter months,” said Dunn. “I’ve lived here for 20 years and have been frustrated by the lack of amenities here. I think it’s wonderful that the other stuff (ice arena, community rooms etc.) has been incorporated into the plan, but an outdoor pool 365 days a year is not feasible.” Protest organizer Alice

Swenson said the support shown by passersby, “validates what we have been saying: the community needs a swimming facility that is open 12 months of the year.” “We are not a destination resort,” she added in reference to the outdoor waterslides and other aquatic play areas that will be built. Township mayor Jack Froese was out of town at a conference and unavailable for comment. However, deputy mayor Bob Long told The Star that the Township will “forge ahead with the current plan,” which was unanimously approved by council in a June 2015 vote. “We can’t change it now.”

The Starfish pack fundraising campaign thermometer is tracking Rotary’s goal of 50 packs for the 2016/2017 school year. Aldergrove Rotary has already raised funding for the Starfish program for the current school year, purchasing 50 food backpacks every weekend for 50 youths at Aldergrove schools: 20 each at Parkside and Shortreed elementary schools and 10 at Betty Gilbert middle school. The Starfish backpacks provide youths with food for weekends when school breakfast and lunch programs are not available. Each backpack costs about $600 per year to supply.

Blossoming trees have been a visual treat over recent weeks in the Aldergrove community and beyond, as warm weather and rains have brought earlier buds to many shrubs and trees.

Editor: I wanted to voice my concern about the petition being signed about the indoor pool. I understand a lot of people in this community must want an indoor pool to have a rally to go on. However, we haven’t heard of the passive people who might want the outdoor pool with picnic area. Having moved to Aldergrove two years ago and wanting to start my family here I would like to see more outdoor activities for my children and niece. To create an indoor pool it would promote children to be inside on hot days. Not only that but the only outdoor pool around is the already over-crowded, outdated and small Al Anderson pool in Brookswood, which is a good five or more minutes away from W.C. Blair pool (a decent sized indoor pool in Murrayville, only 10 minutes away) or we have Walnut Grove pool, which is a massive indoor pool that also is not very far away, not to mention the indoor pools in Abbotsford. The real thing that will update my community is difference! We need an outdoor pool, it’s a community with small families. We need the outdoor family activities. Justine Ehrenholz, Aldergrove

Aldergrove - good for families, good for business By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Aldergrove is one of the oldest communities in the Fraser Valley, established by the pioneering Jackman and Shortreed families more than a century ago. Named after the numerous alder trees that grow here, Aldergrove straddles the border of Langley Township and Abbotsford City. Family homes and condos are always in high demand in Aldergrove due to the affordable prices and the wide range of preowned and newly built residences in the suburban and rural areas of Aldergrove. It is a preferred area for families, with four elementary schools, a middle school and high school, and many amenities and activities offered by both government and private businesses. There are a number of private studios teaching everything from dance to martial arts, and there are pre-schools and day cares to choose from too. There are many retailers here, offering everything from groceries to apparel to automotive services, and there are transit links with buses connect-

ing Aldergrove to Abbotsford and Langley, and beyond. Aldergrove Community Arena is home to the strong Aldergrove Minor Hockey Association, Aldergrove Skating Club and the Aldergrove Kodiaks Junior B Hockey team, as well as Valley Ball Hockey in the summer months. Aldergrove Community Outdoor Pool is located at Philip Jackman Park, alongside soccer and baseball fields, all of which are very popular during the summer months. Both the ice arena and swimming pool will be replaced in May of 2018 with a new Aldergrove Recreation Centre at 27032 Fraser Highway. Construction work on this $26 million Langley Township project is currently underway, and along with a covered outdoor pool, it will feature a two-level 550seat arena, fitness centre, indoor walking track, and multipurpose rooms. The outdoor water park will include waterslides, tidal pool, current channel, a children’s’ aqua structure, playground, and picnic area. Aldergrove Athletic Park is literally the envy of the Fraser Valley,

providing year-round access to sports fields for both Aldergrove Youth and United Adult Soccer clubs, Aldergrove Minor Baseball, as well as a bike track and skateboarding amenities, and Community Garden plots. The Kinsmen Community Centre and Aldergrove Library are located on 29 Avenue, next to the high school and athletic park. Aldergrove is also home to the Greater Vancouver Zoological Centre, Aldergrove Regional Park, West Creek Wetlands and trails such as the South Langley Regional Trail which links Aldergrove and Campbell Valley regional parks. Aldergrove Fair Days, now in its 104th year, celebrates community and agriculture on the third weekend in July. The fair in the parklands next to the high school hosts a car show and shine, crafts, a chili cook off, amusement rides and attractions, main stage performers, vendors and much more. In addition, the Fair Days Society and Aldergrove Elks cohost a children’s Christmas Party and Parade, which attracts hundreds of happy families to the downtown core.

Transit service introduced to Willoughby Aldergrove Star

Bus service is coming to Willoughby. TransLink is creating a new bus route along 208 Street that will connect residents from the Carvolth Exchange Park and Ride to Langley Centre. Implementation of the new service was announced as part of TransLink’s 2015 Transit Network Review, which was released March 30. TransLink is currently working to confirm when the new route will be implemented. “We are thrilled to see a bus route being added to the 208 Street corridor,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “Willoughby is the fastest growing area of our community and this is a much-needed service that we have been working towards for some time.” TransLink regularly surveys the

public to identify where tweaks may be required to enhance transit service, and last fall, the transportation authority held its largest consultation ever. The public was asked for feedback on 85 service changes proposed across Metro Vancouver and TransLink received 12,000 survey responses. Of those who participated, 81 per cent supported expanding transit service to 208 Street, noting it will give them direct access to transit, rather than having to drive to the Carvolth Exchange. Through the service update, the 595 bus will be rerouted to 208 Street instead of 200 Street, where there is low ridership. As the 501 bus will continue to accommodate customers who travel along 200 Street, more customers overall can be served.

“We heard Langley residents loud and clear,” said Tim Savoie, TransLink’s VP of Transportation Planning and Policy. “We’re glad to be able to introduce new transit service in this area to meet the needs of this rapidly growing community.” As a member of the Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, which was unable to secure necessary public support for its proposed Transportation Vision in a 2015 plebiscite, Froese knows that many people want and need more transit solutions and are frustrated by the lack of options. TransLink will also be making adjustments to the Brookswood – Langley Centre and Walnut Grove – Lougheed routes, as determined through the Transit Network Review.

Hockey pro Arsene gets back to smalltown roots Aldergrove Star

For 13 hours, Dean Arsene sat in Buffalo’s Marine Midland Arena in June of 1998 and waited for his name to be called at theNHL Entry Draft. Rated 104th heading into the draft, the Abbotsford defenceman saw 258 other players make their NHL dreams come true. Arsene was never selected that day, a moment that still stings to this day. “I sat there with my agent, my dad and his friend and it was quite disappointing,” he said. “That was probably the low point for me.” But he didn’t let that stop him. He finished his junior hockey career with the Kootenay Ice, winning the Western Hockey League championship in the year 2000, and began carving a career in the pro ranks. Arsene earned two Calder Cups and suited up for over 600 games in the American Hockey League, and also played 13 games with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. The long and winding journey for Arsene in the world of hockey ended in 2014, but his legacy will now live on in the

Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame. Arsene is one of two inductees in this year’s class, an honour he said he cherishes. “I wasn’t expecting it, to be quite honest,” he said. “It’s pretty cool; it’s your hometown so to be recognized like that is really special. Having my family there as well should make it a great event.” Being enshrined in the ASHOF is a far cry from his early days learning the game in Aldergrove. Arsene spent the majority of his minor hockey career in Aldergrove, before joining the Abbotsford Minor Hockey Association for his final Bantam year. He said he still has a strong bond with teammates from that time. “Some of my best friends to this day were a part of that team,” he said. Draft disappointment also occurred for Arsene as a 16-year-old, as he was not selected in the Western Hockey League’s Bantam draft. He was listed by the Regina Pats, and made the team after impressing team officials during training camp. Arsene said the move from B.C. to Saskatchewan was a bit

Pucek retains top boxing standing Canadian Featherweight Champion Sarah Pucek fought a non-title fight in the very first pro fight to take place at the Coast Convention Centre, April 1. Pucek fought Stephanie Essensa from Red Deer, Alberta, a crafty southpaw whose only loss was to former world champion Lindsay Garbatt. The fight was fought very well with both fighters displaying good footwork trying to establish ring position. The fourth round changed when Essensa landed a solid straight left that was the best punch of the round. Pucek came

back well in the fifth with some solid right hands in what was a spirited round. The fight was well boxed and strategic in nature and a rematch with more rounds would be of interest to fight fans. The result was a unanimous decision in favour of Pucek, as one judge had it a shutout, the other two had it four rounds to one for Pucek. A rematch with Lucia Larcinese of Montreal in defence of Pucek’s Canadian Championship is next up. This fight is set for June 17 and will take place at the Coast Convention Centre.
