Aldergrove pool plans protested By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

A group of Aldergrove residents are organizing a demonstration against the Aldergrove Recreation Centre project. Unanimously approved by Township of Langley Council in June of 2015, following years of public consultations and discussion, the Aldergrove Recreation Centre is under construction at 27032 Fraser Highway, on the site of the former Aldergrove Elementary School. Deconstruction of the derelict school buildings are complete, and site work, including geotechnical reports and other preparations, are ongoing. Tenders have been issued for some of the work, with more tenders to follow. Residents will notice significant construction activity beginning in August and September of this year. Following 18 to 20 months of construction and a commissioning period, the facility is scheduled to open in May of 2018. The new centre will feature a covered 25-metre outdoor pool, a two-level arena, fitness centre, indoor walking surface, and multipurpose rooms. The outdoor water park will include waterslides, tidal pool, current channel, a children’s’ aqua structure, playground, and picnic area. However, there are a number of issues that have been raised over the pool aspect of the project and a campaign continues to seek to change council’s unanimous decision to build the centre. Langley politicians talk about local priorities Aldergrove Star

Things got political during the March meeting of the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce. Conservative MP for LangleyAldergrove Mark Warawa and John Aldag, Liberal MP, representing the new riding of Cloverdale-Langley City, joined Langley Township and City mayors Jack Froese and Ted Schaffer on the dais at Coast Hotel on Tuesday, as they presented Langley’s version of the state of the union. Each man was given five minutes to speak on topics of their choice before the floor was thrown open to questions. The four politicians were quizzed on transit and related infrastructure, crime and homelessness, legalization of marijuana and a push to extend hours at the Aldergrove border crossing. During his five-minute talk, Warawa, who is opposition critic for seniors, spoke about the implications of an aging population, noting that currently one in six Canadians is a senior and by 2030, that ratio is expected to narrow to one in four. “It’s a dramatic shift; we need to prepare for that day,” he said. Warawa also told the gathering that he has urged Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale to expand the hours of the Aldergrove border crossing to round the clock. The Conservative MP used the last of his five minutes to lobby for a pipeline to move liquid natural gas (LNG) to the west coast, so that it can be shipped to China and replace coal as a cleaner burning option for manufacturing. Langley Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Hoffman has accepted a position with the B.C. Ministry of Education. The popular district leader will join a team of field-based educators, dedicated to working with school districts around the province on the three-year implemen-

tation of the new B.C. curriculum. Hoffman’s secondment is for a two-year period, commencing May 1. She will be in transition through May and June, while completing current projects in the district, including consultation about the proposed catchment changes on the Willoughby slope. Effective May 1, assistant

superintendent Gord Stewart, who has 27 years of experience in the district, will be appointed acting superintendent of schools. A search to select his replacement as assistant superintendent will commence soon. “The board is very grateful for the significant leadership Suzanne has provided to the district over the past four years,” said

Board of Education chair Robert McFarlane. “Her dedication and her collaborative, inclusive and caring style have created a true sense of ‘community’ in our district and we thank her for that and wish her all the best in her secondment.” Hoffman took on the position of superintendent as the school district was paying off a large

deficit that had been caused by human error. It was also a time when the public’s trust in the district leadership was not strong, amid controversial changes to H.D. Stafford from a high school to a middle school as well as some school closures. Hoffman focused on full transparency and public consultation in all changes within the district.

Randy Hagen

Outstanding community contributor passes Randy Hagen of Aldergrove passed away in his 59th year after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Randy was born in Nanaimo but left his mark on the Aldergrove community in many ways. Randy and wife Debbie had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this month, in the company of their sons Ryan and Tod, daughter Devon, and many extended family members. Over a period of 18 years Randy and Debbie had fostered many children in their home, as many as five at any time, and many of these now grown foster kids still keep in contact with the Hagen family. Randy also played an important role in the development of Aldergrove Minor Hockey Association, where he served as coach alongside Scott Cleeve and Mike Toth. He recreated the AMHA’s juvenile hockey program and over 10 years

coached many AMHA youth players. Randy had worked in the modular building industry for almost 40 years, including Atco for 30 years. Randy had originally opened Atco’s office in Aldergrove next to Otter Co-op, then travelled the world, from Australia to Iceland to Dubia, representing the industry, before working the past seven years at the Horizon North modular factory in Kamloops. He was still travelling to work at Horizon North when his cancer was diagnosed last year. Over the past year Randy had come through 11 chemotherapy rounds, however, an intense new radiation program had taken its toll on him. Randy passed away at home in Aldergrove on March 16. Many family members, friends, and others whom Randy had a profound influence on are expected at the funeral service for Randy, Saturday, April 2, 1 p.m. at the Sts. Joachim and Ann parish in Aldergrove.

The Arty Awards are hosted annually by the Abbotsford Arts Council to recognize and showcase local artistic excellence in individuals of all ages across multiple genres, ranging from visual art and writing to performance and the culinary arts, as well as community arts advocacy. Her Brothers stand up for ‘sisters’ Aldergrove Star

Her Brothers is a Canadian alternative rock band from Aldergrove. Together since 2008, Gabe Penner (lead vocals, guitar), Josh Penner (bass guitar), and Levi Penner (drums) have performed at a variety of venues and events along the West Coast of North America including fairs, cafés, community events, universities, and churches. They have opened up for big name acts such as Jerry Doucette and Dal Richards as well as have been winners of “Best Performer” and “Best Band”. Their debut album, SHE, released January of 2015, is a mixture of the melodic hooks of Vampire Weekend with the anthe-

mic textures of U2 and flavours of Jack White throughout. “Music isn’t so much an end, but a means to an end; music is a vehicle for which to carry a message, and if we find ourselves singing these songs out night after night with each other, it only fits that these songs would be about something we believe in: Hope,” says Gabe Penner. Between January and March 2013, Gabe traveled through southeast Asia with a film crew documenting stories and experiencing life as it is for millions in that corner of our world. The images of poverty, women being offered for sale, and the attitudes of people who thrive off a caste system designed to keep gift-

Mt. Lehman Cemetery to double in size Aldergrove Star

Construction is underway to double the size of the City of Abbotsford’s Mount Lehman cemetery. In addition to increasing the number of burial plots, the

improvements will see the building of a columbarium for funeral urns, with two more to be constructed later. A scattering garden, decorative fencing and on-street parking are also being added.

The cemetery – located on Taylor Road in the city’s far northwestern corner – will be closed during construction, with completion of the project anticipated in mid-April. Budget for the project is $319,000.

anyone wants to put up a greenhouse, or barn, or a shed for their livestock, or a place to harvest their production, rather than just going through a building permit and dealing with staff under the building code, we’re putting another impediment on them.” Richter countered his argument, saying the intent of her motion is “not about garden sheds, this is about densifying an area over an unconfined shallow aquifer that — by the way — feeds the Salmon River, which is our most prestigious and prolific salmon bearing vehicle that we have in the Township. “So I think there is a need for us to be a little more considerate relative to the natural environment that we are so blessed to have here in Langley … I’m sorry, I think it’s not about garden sheds, Mr. Mayor, I think that’s being flippant about an area that’s important to our Township.” Coun. Michelle Sparrow said a “more fruitful discussion at CPC would be beneficial,” and asked it be referred to CPC. The referral passed with Mayor Froese, Coun. Angie Quaale and Coun. Bob Long opposed.

Other members of council pointed out that turning this into a mandatory development permit area could have unintended consequences. Residents wanting to simply build a shed or a deck on their property could be negatively impacted. Township of Langley council will consider taking a closer look at development pressures in the rural Salmon River Uplands area, after a motion from Coun. Kim Richter was referred to the Council Priorities Committee (CPC). At the Feb. 15 afternoon council meeting, Richter presented a motion, inspired by an email from a local resident, asking staff to create a report on the feasibility of making the Salmon River Uplands a mandatory development permit area. Development Permits are limited to consideration of form, character and siting of structures. This would encompass land over the Hopington aquifer, from roughly 232 Street to 256 Street, and Fraser Highway to 72 Avenue, Richter said. As new developments are being constructed — such as Hyde Canyon Estates Homes, located on the former Tuscan Farms near 248 Street at 61 Avenue, and Robertson Ranch Estates, located near 248 Street on 44 Avenue — Richter believes the resident’s suggestion is timely. “I actually think that that’s a very good idea because more and more over the last little while we’ve seen this trend towards strata type development, which means they’re putting in the smaller roads (and) they’re clustering housing,” Richter said. “People have been accumulating land in the area, and right now our approving officer has a great deal of flexibility in what the approving officer can and cannot do,” said Richter. “So I think this was a way to make sure that the neighbourhood character is not lost with this push towards stratified, clustertype development that we’re seeing in the Salmon River Uplands. It’s a very important part of the

On February 29, Township of Langley Council unanimously voted to authorize expenditure of $1,574,654 for the addition of a canopy over the pool area of the Aldergrove Recreation Centre (ARC). The covering, which will feature a roof structure with lighting, supported by steel columns, will be included in the current construction project and funded through the Township’s Land Capital Reserve. The canopy will provide shelter over the six-lane, 25-metre outdoor pool, but will not include walls. “The pool at the Aldergrove Recreation Centre will provide a unique, outdoor experience that can be enjoyed year round,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “The year-round pool will be heated, including throughout the fall and winter, by using excess energy produced from cooling the ice in the adjacent arena. Visitors can do laps and take aquatic classes with the added benefit of fresh air and beautiful surroundings.” In December of 2015, Council decided to spend $280,066 for structural enhancements to the base building and footings that will allow for

future construction of a canopy. They requested further information before deciding whether to include the canopy itself in the current construction project, or add it on in the future. On Feb. 29, following a presentation from Township staff and the Project Team, Council opted to move forward with the canopy at this time. Approved by Township of Langley Council in June of 2015, the Aldergrove Recreation Centre will be constructed at 27032 Fraser Highway, on the site of the former Aldergrove Elementary School. Deconstruction of the school is complete, and site work, including geotechnical reports and other preparations, are ongoing. Residents will begin to notice significant construction activity beginning in August and September of this year. Following 18 to 20 months of construction and a commissioning period, the facility is scheduled to open in May of 2018. Along with the outdoor pool, the ARC will feature a two-level 550-seat arena, fitness centre, indoor walking surface, and multipurpose rooms. The outdoor water park will include waterslides, tidal pool, current channel, a children’s’ aqua structure, playground, and picnic area.

Crackdown coming on passing school bus By TOM FLETCHER Aldergrove Star

The B.C. government is preparing to increase penalties for drivers who pass school buses while children are getting on or off. “We’ve had 14 children injured, thankfully none killed, in the last five years,” said Transportation Minister Todd Stone. “There are still far too many motorists who are not getting the message of just how important it is to slow down in school zones and certainly not pass a school bus when the lights are flashing.” Stone said school districts and local governments have been calling for increased penalties. Police in B.C. have issued 1,100 tickets for failing to stop for a school bus for the past five years, with 14 injuries during that time. The current B.C. penalty is $167 fine and three demerit points, the same as disobeying a school crossing guard.

B.C.’s minimum wage will get an extra bump in September because of improved economic growth, Jobs Minister Shirley Bond says. Bond issued a statement Friday saying the new rate will be announced this spring, and it will go beyond the current annual increase based on the federal Consumer Price Index. “The scheduled increase, based on this year’s B.C. CPI, does not reflect the economic circumstances of the prov-

ince,” Bond said. The formula added 20 cents to the hourly minimum wage last September, bringing it to $10.45 an hour. The rate for restaurant and pub servers, discounted due to tip income, went up from $9 to $9.20. The B.C. Federation of Labour, which led a “10 bucks sucks” campaign to promote an increase that took effect in 2010, is now calling for a $15 minimum wage. Using the CPI formula, it might take until 2034 for to reach $15, the federation says.

WHL Giants rumoured to make move to LEC By GARY AHUJA Aldergrove Star

Rumours of the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants moving to the Langley Events Centre continue to circulate. And a recent visit from Ron Toigo has done nothing to quell them. The Vancouver Giants owner was seen at the LEC on March 5 during the Vancouver Stealth National Lacrosse League game. The LEC was also hosting three provincial high school basketball championships that night, which could have allowed him to see how

the facility operates when hosting multiple events. Toigo was not available for an interview when contacted by the Langley Times. But he did talk about the relocation rumours when he spoke on the radio on March 4. “(The LEC) is a beautiful building,” he said on TSN 1040’s Afternoon Show. “The size is just the thing we are questioning, whether we can make it work at that size with the overhead we run.” The LEC has capacity for 5,276 spectators. The Giants do have some his-

tory with the LEC, having played six games at the venue in 2010 when the team was displaced during the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Vancouver also played a preseason game here last September, and that game left an impression as more than 1,900 fans came out to watch. “That kind of opened our eyes; that is pretty good support for an exhibition game,” Toigo said. By comparison, the Giants had 536 fans for one home pre-season game and 354 for their other at the Pacific Coliseum. With two home games remaining

in the season, Vancouver is averaging 5,035 fans per home game. Last year, that number was 5,815 per game. Toigo hasn’t ruled anything out and admitted it would be difficult to leave the Coliseum,where the team has played since entering the WHL in 2001, including winning a Memorial Cup as the top Canadian junior hockey team in 2006. He did say that playing in Surrey — at a proposed 5,000-seat rink to be build by the Scott Road SkyTrain Station — would be the team’s first choice. The rink proposal was shelved by Surrey city council.

“At the end of the day, that would be the best scenario overall,” Toigo said. “(But) that is not in the cards for now.” “We are still working with the Coliseum to try and see if we can make things work there, but we have a ways to go,” he said. “We can’t carry on with the way things have been the last few years.” He did admit a better on-ice product is crucial to the team’s success. “At the end of the day, people want to see a team win and they want to be entertained and we haven’t done a lot of that lately.”

Pucek faces Essensa at ‘Clash’ Aldergrove Star

Pro boxing comes to Langley April 1 with the return of Langley’s Sarah Pucek to the boxing ring. Pucek holds the Canadian Featherweight championship and will face tough southpaw Stephanie Essensa from Red Deer Alberta in a non-title bout. Pucek has been ranked as high as #10 in the world by the WBC, however, has been inactive recently due to school commitments. Although she is still in collage she has reduced her work load, allowing her to continue her promising boxing career. Pucek has done most of her boxing in the U.S. and was an attraction at the Emerald Queen Casino Complex between 2008 and 2012. She hopes to build the same following in her hometown if

possible. Sarah is a Langley girl and has lived in both Aldergrove and Fort Langley. Her roots are very much in this community. She works for Thunderbird Equestrian Centre. Thunderbird has sponsored her and supports her boxing career in all ways possible. Her long time trainer Dave Allison says Pucek can win a world title if she allows for time to develop her timing. “She needs fights and we need to keep her busy,” says Allison. “She is a dedicated athlete with a work ethic second to none. She also possesses natural ability that is rare, this matched with her athleticism is a great combination. At 28 she is in her prime and came back to the sport with a great attitude,” says Allison.

The Pucek/Essensa fight will be a five-round fight and the only pro fight on the card. Essensa will be the first southpaw Pucek has ever faced and since Essensa’s only loss is to former world champion Lindsay Garbatt she is going to be formidable. Pucek has never lost a featherweight fight and has been sparring with world renowned kickboxing champion Farinaz Lari, who is a southpaw. The amateur semi main even will be a rematch between Ari Ashari, the B.C. Super Welterweight champion who will be rematched with Josh Wright the former champion. The two fought on March 11 in a very close fight in what many fans thought went to the wrong guy. This amateur fight will be accompanied with other ama-

teur fights including a fourround elimination between Tyson Gemby and Cody Robertson in a super middleweight fight. The winner will fight Branden Kim for Kim’s City title on May 6. There will be an amateur undercard that will feature all senior boxers and six amateur bouts are expected. The fights take place at the Coast Convention Centre in downtown Langley. Bringing the girls to Matthew’s House has had a big impact on their family. They’ve had to outfit their own home with overhead lifts for transferring, shower and toilet commodes, standing frames, walkers, and wheelchairs. Finding a respite home that is equipped to care for her daughters has been a blessing. “Being able to bring our daughters to Matthew’s House means we can do typical family things, like going shopping or to a movie,” Shannon says. “It allows us to spend more time with our other daughter.” None of this would have been possible without Doug and Andrea’s tireless efforts. They rallied support from individuals, community partners and both municipal and provincial governments. Matthew’s House is a testimony to their vision and the support of a community that has made this resource possible to other

Langley—Aldergrove MP Mark Warawa has joined other members of the 2016 Langley Environmental Hero Nominations Committee in calling for nominations for the tenth annual Environmental Hero awards. All Langley residents are invited to submit nominations before the May 13 deadline. “This year is a milestone for the Langley Environmental Hero Awards,” said Warawa. “For ten years we have highlighted the important work of those who give their time and energy to promote environmental stewardship in Langley. Some of the top names to emerge from B.C.’s country music industry will be honoured in Langley next month when the B.C. Country Music Association brings its Hall of Fame show to Cascades Casino. Now in its 30th year, the Hall of Fame is welcoming in 11 new inductees: Red Robinson, Ray Ramsay, Denny Eddy, Laurie Thain, Mike Norman, Farmer’s Daughter, Gerry Leiske, Tammy Ray, Redd Volkaert, John McLaughlin and Ron Sanders. “They’re legends,” said Linda Corscadden, vice presi-

dent of BCCMA. “It’s years put into the country music industry so we like to reward them. It’s not just artists, it’s behind the scenes industry folks as well. “The industry folk don’t get the recognition they need as much as the artists do.” The inductees are handselected by a panel of BCCMA members, based on their impact to B.C.’s country music industry. Their focus is hyper-local. To be considered for the award, music makers must have worked in B.C. for many years, or have started their career in B.C. before venturing to larger

markets, Corscadden said. “If we don’t have the artists we have no music. If we don’t have music, it’s pretty lonely out there. Music is healing to the soul, I think, and I think that’s a big part of it for sure,” she said. This year’s show, which is happening April 10, is featuring performances by Denny Eddy, Laurie Thain, Tammy Ray and Jess Lee, a special medley sung by Farmer’s Daughter and a musical tribute to the late Mike Norman, who wrote or cowrote many hit songs for local artists. “I’m just excited, I think it’s a big reunion with this group

that we have this year, because a lot of them have worked together closely for many years,” Corscadden said. “Everybody knows everybody, and we’re a big family. So when we do any type of show — whether it’s our Hall of Fame or our awards show — every year is a big reunion. It’s pretty cool, I love it.” The Hall of Fame show is being held at Cascade Casino’s Summit Theatre. Jim Davis

Long time Langley Township resident Jim Davis passed away peacefully January 10 2016. Jim first moved to the Fraser Valley with his parents in 1944. He worked in the logging industry and later ran his own construction company in the oil and gas industry near Edmonton. Jim worked for BC Hydro as a backhoe operator when he and his family moved back to Aldergrove in 1962. He coached lacrosse, hockey and was a referee. Jim was a long time member of the Aldergrove Lion’s Club and was active in Jackman Manor and Lions Grove. He enjoyed panning for gold, exploring ghost towns, using his home sawmill and working on his backhoe. Always there to help a neighbor or someone in need, his generosity, laughter and kindness will be dearly missed. Jim is survived by his children Pam (Doug), Sid (Dar), Carol, Janice (David) grand kids and great grand kids.
