Fiddle players of the Kootenays, a weekend just for you is approaching.

The inaugural Creston Weekend Fiddle Camp is being held in Creston on May 13, 14 and 15. The event is being organized by Velle Weitman of Velvet Strings and Creston Fiddlers.

Sue Trombley of Cranbrook, the camp’s assistant director, says four top fiddle instructors are lined up to impart knowledge, technique and repertoire. They include Velle Weitman herself, Karen Dignan of Sandpoint, Idaho; Mark Sullivan from Vancouver; and Austin Castle from Swift Current, Sask. All four are professional touring fiddler players, recording artists and instructors.

A unanimous ruling from the Supreme Court of Canada has determined that the federal government must recognize Metis and non-status Indians as Aboriginal groups on par with ‘Indians’ as defined in the constitution.

It’s a landmark decision after a 17-year legal dispute, which sought to establish that Metis and non-status Indians should be included with status Indians and the Inuit as a federal government responsibility.

Marlin Ratch, the president of the Rocky Mountain Metis Association, welcomed the ruling.

“What the ruling is about, is it’s a confirmation that we’ve held forever that the government’s duty to the Metis people, as well as to the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, should be the

same as the other Aboriginal peoples of Canada,” Ratch said.

“The Metis have always been passed off to other jurisdictions or they haven’t been listed in the Indian Act, therefore you can’t access any of these services…

“So it’s always been a bit of a sore contention because the Metis people themselves suffer from some of the same social ills and problems that the other Aboriginal peoples of Canada do and we don’t have any recourse or resource to take care of them.”

Officially, the legal battle has wound through various levels of court since 1999 when a lawsuit was filed by the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples and Harry Daniels. However, the ruling confirms a view that the Metis have long held, according to Ratch.

Top Indie songwriter back in action, on tour

One of Canada’s top songwriters is back on the road, and will take the stage in Cranbrook at the end of this month.

Jason Collett, one of the prominent voices out of Toronto’s burgeoning Indie rock scene, will play the Live Lobby Lounge at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook, April 29, along with Zeus, a Toronto band who have collaborated with Collett throughout his rock and roll career.

Collett is also known as a member of Broken Social Scene, a renowned Canadian musical collective, currently on hiatus. Collett himself has

been on a hiatus of several years from recording and touring, but he’s glad to be back.

“It’s been four years maybe,” Collett told the Townsman, prior to setting out for a whirlwind Western Canadian tour. “But I am looking forward to going out, particularly because Zeus is the band. I have a real affinity for those fellas — we go back a ways and they’re such great players. And I’ve done a few ‘tours of duty’ across the country and back over the years. I am familiar with and fond of Canada.”

B.C. declares drug overdose emergency Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. government has declared its first-ever public health emergency to deal with the sharply rising cases of opioid drug overdoses across the province.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the measure will allow for rapid collection of data from health

authorities and the B.C. Coroners’ Service, so overdose treatment kits can be deployed to regions where there are new clusters of outbreaks.

Overdose deaths have been mainly clustered in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, but cases have spiked upward in the Interior and Vancouver Island health

regions as well. Kendall said there is no area of the province unaffected, and that is why he is using the authority to declare an emergency for the first time in B.C. history.

There has been a steady increase in overdoses of drugs containing fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid made in Chinese drug labs and smuggled to Canada. It has

been found mixed with heroin, cocaine and even marijuana sold on the streets in B.C. Kendall said fentanyl is so concentrated it can be easily smuggled in small packages, and overdose cases linked to the drug started on the west coast and are spreading east across Canada. Prescriptions of fentanyl and other opioid pharmaceuticals such as oxy-

codone have also ended up on streets, and medical organizations are working to shift doctor prescriptions to alternative pain medications, he said.

Health Minister Terry Lake said kits containing an overdose treatment called naxalone have been made available to paramedics, firefighters and police, but the

alarming rise in cases means more action is needed.

“We have to do what’s needed to prevent overdoses and deaths, and what’s needed is real-time information,” Lake said. “Medical health officers need immediate access to what’s happening and where so they can deploy the necessary strategies to prevent these tragedies.”

RCMP honours Frances Boulton B a r ry Co u lt e r

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police paid tribute to a remarkable woman and her remarkable life on Thursday, April 14.

Frances Boulton was presented with the RCMP’s ‘Second Person’ award at Joseph Creek Village Thursday afternoon, with members of her family, Mounties, media and various dignitaries in attendance.

Mrs. Boulton celebrated her 100th birthday in January.

The Second Person Award is given to the spouses of those RCMP members who served in days gone by in small detachments, where they helped out by answering detachment phones, cooking meals for prisoners, guarding prisoners, searching female prisoners, sometimes even backing up their spouses on call!

They often used their homes as a hotel for visiting senior officers, court Judges, doctors and nurses to

whom they also provided meals and entertainment. All of this done in very remote locations with inadequate housing and growing families of their own to which they had to tend.

Generally, these people were not compensated financially; back then the responsibility came with being married to RCMP members, who were stationed in various areas of the country, each location bringing their own unique challenges.

The award was started by the RCMP Veterans Association.

Frances was married to Phillip Boulton, who passed away many years ago. Phillip Boulton was a Staff Sergeant when he retired from the RCMP in 1968.

While her husband arrested the “bad guys” Frances would assist him in any way she could.

While living in Fort Nelson, the Boulton’s called the RCMP Office home. They served in

places like Fort Nelson, Burns Lake, Dawson Creek, Port Haney and the East Kootenay.

Frances’ family was able to attend the ceremony Thursday where Frances was given an RCMP broach, and a certificate thanking her for her service to the RCMP. Officers from the Cranbrook and Kimberley Detachments also came out to thank her.

“It was important for the membership to come to be there out of respect for the service Frances provided to the RCMP as a dedicated spouse of a member and to recognize her contribution to the overall culture and traditions of the RCMP as much of that has been lost with each generation that passes on,” the RCMP said in a statement. “We need to remember where our core values were cultivated and nurtured as they are what many of us aspire to meet today,”

RCMP respond to 139 calls April 4-11

Cranbrook RCMP responded to 139 calls for service from April 4 (6 a.m.) to April 11 (6 a.m.), according to a press release issued by Staff Sergeant Hector Lee. • One alcohol-related Immediate Roadside prohibition was issued, and one 24-hour prohibition (alcohol related).

• One vehicle was impounded – the vehicle was caught travelling 148 kmh in a 100 kmh area on Hwy 95A. The driver was charged with excessive speed and had his vehicle impounded for seven days.

• Six collisions were reported. Two of these were “deer strikes” on

the highway. RCMP reminds the motoring public to be aware of wild life on our highways.

• There were 10 responses to Mental Health calls — one individuals was apprehended.

• There were six assault complaints, two of which were domestic in nature.

• There were four incidents of theft reported. One was a shoplifting report, and one was a bicycle theft. RCMP advise there have been a few of these, and remind the community to make sure property is secured.

• Two break and enters were reported this

week past, one turned out to be unfounded, the other was to a rural property outside of Jaffray.

• There were four drug seizures – three marijuana seizures and one methamphetamine seizure related to the news release last week regarding the recovery of stolen vehicles, firearms and possible explosives.

Monday, April 11, was the Regimental Funeral for RCMP officers Cst Sarah Beckett, who was killed in the line of duty on Vancouver Island last week. Detachment members’ thoughts and prayers are with Sarah, her family and co-workers.

“We’re looking for at least 40 students. “We will take 30 — we can go with three instructors — but we would like 40 so we can go with all four instructors.”

Students arrive on the Friday, staying in Creston and environs — there’s plenty of camping space, Trombley said — and checking in.

“We’ll be splitting them into approximately four different grade levels,” Trombley said.

“When they register Friday night they will tell us what level they believe they’re in so we can give them the best group learning experience possible.”

The groups will be small, three or four in-

structors, depending on how many students register. All levels will be registered Friday night, and later that evening there will be an instructors concert, with intermission and refreshments, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Students can come to the concert with their families, Trombley said.

Admission is by donation.

On Saturday, students will learn four songs during the day, with breaks in between, and lunch.

“Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m., we’ll have an old-fashioned country barn dance, with callers and squares, jigs, reels and waltzes and everything,” Trombley said. “ It’s going to be led by the instructors, and the advanced students can join the orchestra if they

want to.”

Saturday night’s dance is five dollars per person, 10 dollars per family.

“We’re hoping people come into our community with families — and these are events their families can come to.

The camp will be held in two locations: Prince Charles Secondary School for the classes, and the evening events will be held at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church.

On Sunday, students will go for classes in the morning, and after lunch there will be a student performance

back at the church.

Trombley said that Karen Dignan’s husband conducts percussion workshops, “so if there is a family member interested, they can take that elective workshop.”

Continued from page 1 “Song And Dance Man,” Jason Collett’s sixth full-­length album, covers the trials and triumphs of the modern musician with poignant poetry: “If you can tweet something brilliant, you got a marketing plan.”

“I had a fair bit of ambivalence about making this record — it took me a while to sift through my relationship with the music industry,” Collett said.

“But ultimately, I’m a songwriter, and I need to create. So I got back into the saddle. Just getting into the studio and making some music with some close friends, and reminding myself how much I enjoy doing it. Same thing with going out on the road with Zeus. Rehearsing with them reminds me how much I enjoy playing music with people that I love.”

Collett takes an intense view of the world and his place in it, and transforms them into unique and original rock songs, acoustically inclined and beat favourable. At the same time, these songs have a universal access — anyone can see themselves in these songs.

“What I learned

He only ever seemed to write about himself. And then, without really thinking about it, I found myself really loving John Lennon … for the very reason I wasn’t into him before.

He’s very universal and accessible because he’s acutely vulnerable in writing about himself.

And that is the best way to be universal.

“So what I learned from that as a writer is that I was tending to distance myself in writing in the third person. I made a concerted effort

“It’s often what makes a song more interesting. I think people have good bullshit detectors and you can tell if there’s truth in a song if it’s coming from a truthful place.”

In spite of his complicated feelings about the evils and perils of the music industry, the thing Collett loves most is writing songs. “It is that sort of mysterious thing — I am completely enthralled and in awe of the process. I love nothing more than to just spend my days writing songs.”

Could it in fact be described as a dream job?

“It certainly is,” he

answers. “I’ve spent most of my adult life working as a carpenter, I have pretty good perspective on what a hard day’s labour is about. So getting to go out with a band and make records, for sure it’s a dream job.

“But then, getting back to my ambivalence in regards to the industry is just being aware of how the ground has not stopped shifting for a number of years.

“The title track ‘Song and Dance Man’ is a comment on that. You really got to hustle to make it work, and you need a lot of luck. And even that sometimes isn’t enough. It’s a very precarious business to be in as long as I’ve been in it.

“A lot of people that you would think are successful in this industry — their lives are far more financially precarious than you would ever imagine.

“People’s ideas of success can be a little mythical.”

Jason Collett and Zeus take the stage April 29 at the Key City Theatre’s Live Lobby Lounge. Opening the bill is Polaris Prize nominated songwriter Kalle Mattson. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be a great show,” Collett said.

“Zeus is really one of the best bands in the country.”

Do you have it in you to be a Nelson?

esmond Tutu, the retired Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town in South Africa, writes “I believe in MasterPeace. World leaders cannot push back armed conflict alone. We need the whole world to make this happen.”

I had never heard of this organization before, so I went to that modern omniscient, all–knowing force which we call Google. The more I read, the more excited I got.

The short answer to the question is that MasterPeace is a UN award–winning grassroots peace movement which challenges us to create peace together, inspiring people to use their talents and energy for peacebuilding. Established in 2010, it urges us to help create a sustainable future for the world. Thirdly, it inspires us to “be a Nelson—to mobilize 200,000 Nelsons to bring change in their local communities.” (More about being a Nelson later.)

What really turned me on about MasterPeace is that it works through the power of music, art, media, sport and dialogue to prevent new armed conflicts and help the world achieve the Social Development Goals (SDG’s). Sponsored by the United Nations, over 190 world leaders committed to these 17 goals in 2015 to “help us all end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and fix climate change.” (I will have more to say about SDG’s in future columns.)

MasterPeace is currently active in over 40 countries around the world, inspiring people to become peace–builders in their local communities. As people are inspired, local groups begin to have a global impact. The mission of MasterPeace,

what they call their “Passion Statement” is, “We are dedicated to put Music above fighting; Dialogue above judgment; Bread above bombs; Creation above destruction.”

They list the four key values that guide their work: “We have selected four values as guideline for our work: positivity (we focus on solutions, not on ‘who is to blame?’), co–creation (we focus on innovative & equal collaboration), autonomy (we encourage entrepreneurship & personal leadership) and ‘walk your talk’ (because you are what you do, not what you preach).”

MasterPeace celebrated the International Day of Peace on September 21 with 55 different events in 45 different countries, including many in conflict zones of the world. Musicians performed in places from Moscow to Tunis, from Mexico City to Kabul via Istanbul. You can find some of these concerts on youtube quite easily.

You’ve got to love it when people get together around things that fill them with life, and the movement takes off because it touches the lives of so many others.

The question they ask of all of us is, “Would you like to be a Nelson?”

There is a haunting short video, only a minute long, which shows young people from many different nations walking along a beach at low tide, speaking in their own languages, “I don’t want your money. I don’t want your likes. I don’t want your food. I don’t want your pity. I don’t want your guilt. I don’t need your asylum. We don’t want your weapons.”

They all stop, and a young girl gazes directly into our eyes as she says, “I want you.” The video ends with a voiceover, “Give people in conflict areas the best of you. Donate your talent and be a Nelson.”

So what’s a Nelson?

“In every nation, in every country, and in every alley, there is someone who stood up and changed something. Small or big, it doesn’t matter! We here at MasterPeace are on the lookout for these local heroes and recognize them as what we call ‘Nelsons’—named after the most famous Nelson of them all: Nelson Mandela.

eath is inevitable, it would seem.

The Grim Reaper takes many forms upon this mortal coil: war, disease, famine, water, fire and, in the case of local fatal misadventures, ceramics, Christmas trees, elephants and sleeping.

There’s just no telling how it will end.

The first murder in Cranbrook, in which Edward Ryan was shot to death near the CPR freight shed on the night of March 27, 1899, was a case of mistaken identity. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So was William Reid, a CPR conductor who was killed instantly the same year when a tree fell on him, roots and all, while he was walking along the railway tracks near town on his way to catch a train to Winnipeg to spend Christmas with his wife and son.

CPR fireman James Power met his maker in 1901, when, for no known reason, he plunged from a locomotive while crossing a bridge near Sirdar and, rather ironically for a fireman, drowned in the waters below.

Death seems never more tragic than when it takes the young, as in the 1904 case of the Coulter family of Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Coulter were attending the funeral of their three-year-old son who died from exhaustion while lost on a mountainside, when another young son, apparently unattended at home,

Death by misadventure? Here we go. - Windermere Cemetery 2010 drank from a bottle of disinfectant left by the undertaker and was found dead upon the parents return.

So, too, are the deaths of young ladies particularly tragic. In 1909, Salvation Army worker Miss Lucy Horwood, age 24, met her demise when she was struck on the head by the handle of a CPR handcar upon which she was riding.

In 1912, Cranbrook nurse-in-training Eva Maria Wagstaffe went to local dentist Dr. Hill to have a tooth extracted. She requested an anesthetic which was duly administered by Dr. McBurney of the St. Eugene Hospital. The tooth was successfully extracted but Miss Wagstaffe was not, dying of acute cardiac failure.

Perhaps one of the most tragic deaths is that of Agnes Pearle Parker, age 19, a bright and lively young nurse at St. Eugene Hospital

who spent the week before Christmas of 1916 excitedly planning her part in the annual Christmas party put on by the nurses for the patients. She was happily engrossed in her Christmas Day role as Santa Claus when her outfit brushed against a candle on the Christmas tree. She ran screaming down the corridor, engulfed in a sheet of flames until she finally collapsed.

Friends rushed to extinguish the blaze but it was too late. She died the following day.

The most insignificant of occurrences can lead to death. Joseph Walsh, long-time Fort Steele resident and provincial police constable died in 1922 from a small sliver of dish enamel that embedded in his flesh and led to blood poisoning.

Miss Albina Haddad, age 18, died in 1930 from the same cause following the scratching of a face pimple.

Two-year-old Colin Sinclair, of Tobacco Plains, met his demise in 1904 from the effects of a wood tick burrowing so far into his neck that it penetrated his spinal cord, causing death from paralysis, one of the few, if not the only, recorded deaths from a wood tick in the East Kootenays.

Damon Foster was killed in 1925 during a baseball practice when he was struck in the head by a flying bat that slipped out of a teammate’s hand, one of the rare deaths during a sporting event.

A gentleman known simply as “Alexander,” died instantly in 1905 when he was struck from behind while walking on the railroad tracks. Not a wise choice for a deaf mute.

At least he was moving at the time.

It is somewhat more difficult to explain the deaths of a number of men between the years

1899-1906. It began with James Stewart and Michael Redwood, CPR employees who were drinking heavily at Moyie during the evening and left around midnight for their sleeping quarters down the line. They walked a short distance before lying down to sleep between the railway tracks with their heads resting on the rails and shortly thereafter were struck by the east bound train. Their bodies were later discovered about 80 yards apart, heads crushed and nearly severed.

Mat Black took a siesta on the rails near Fort Steele in 1902. The engineer of the train stopped long enough to place both the body and the head side by side along the track for later retrieval.

John Phillips, a tailor by trade, decided to take forty winks on the track near Yahk in 1903.

He was badly mangled and died shortly after in the St. Eugene hospital. An unknown man suffered the same fate in 1906 near Creston, dying instantly.

Sleeping on the railway tracks? One can only wonder what, besides a freight train, was going through their heads at the time.

And for your final consideration, Jesse Wardlow, age 47, hailing from Denver, Colorado, who may not take kindly to the elephant statue on Baker Street in Cranbrook. He was working as an elephant trainer for the Al G. Barnes Circus during a 1935 performance at what was then the baseball field and is now the site of Mount Baker High School. He either fell or was knocked down and was trampled to death by one of the circus elephants, dying from a crushed skull.

No-one was quite sure what happened as there was too much dust.

Nitro F Haase commits to New England College Pilgrims Dynamiters power forward Keenan Haase will continue hockey career suiting up for NCAA competition on U.S. East Coast Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

First, he was a California kid making tracks in the deep snow of a little hockey-crazed mountain town in British Columbia.

Now, he’s a West Coast kid taking his laid-back, easy-going approach all the way to the East Coast.

After two successful seasons with the Kimberley Dynamiters, forward Keenan Haase, a native of Mission Viejo, Calif., has committed to the New England College Pilgrims for the 2016-17 NCAA Div. III campaign.

Dynamiters general manager Mike Reid confirmed Haase’s commitment April 3.

“Before playing junior, it was always the plan at the end of the road,” Haase said this past Wednesday night, standing on the Dynamiters bench for one last time. “Especially being in Kimberley here and having that dream come true, I can’t ask for much more. I’m really excited.

“Jerry and the coaching staff really believed in me. I had some confidence issues in my first year and they sat me down and we talked through it. I got that confidence back and they gave me that motivation, they gave me ice time, they gave me all the opportunities I could’ve ever asked for. I just had to put in the work.”

Haase, oft-characterized as a new breed of “power centre” by head coach Jerry Bancks, produced 52 goals and 106 points in 95 games spanning across two seasons, 2014-15 to 2015-16, with the Kimberley Dynamiters.

“The biggest thing for Keenan when he arrived here, he needed to learn to be consistent,” Bancks said. “It’s the No. 1 thing a coach will hope for, is to know what you’re going to get from [a player] every game, every shift, every practice. That’s what Keenan had to

“He started at it last year, but there were games he just wasn’t internally motivated and you had to help him out a little bit. This year, he grew. His last game against 100 Mile House [in the KIJHL championship] was a definite statement.

“He grew every little bit. He has phenomenal hands, a tremendous shot and a great release. He’s just a wonderful kid from a wonderful family.

“It might have been that little bit of California laid-back that he needed to get rid of. It was nice to see him become much, much more consistent this year.”

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound pivot added nine goals and 24 points in 35 KIJHL post-season games the past two seasons, playing a vital role in the Dynamiters run to the

2015 KIJHL championship and a runner-up finish at the 2015 Cyclone Taylor Cup for B.C. Junior B supremacy.

Having just turned 20 years old on March 10, Haase was eligible for one more year with the Dynamiters, but instead, he graduates from the junior ranks and on to the next chapter in his life, which will take him across the continent and back south across the 49th parallel.

“There are a lot of emotions,” Haase said of playing his last game as a Dynamiter. “A lot of these guys I’ve been with these last few years, it’s insane to think these two years have just gone by. We’ve been pretty good these last two years, but saying goodbye and knowing that I probably won’t be back for a while…I don’t know. I started tearing up the other day about it.”

New England College is located

in Henniker, N.H., a town of approximately 2,000 people, situated roughly 50 km northwest of Manchester, N.H. The Pilgrims men’s ice hockey program, an NCAA Div. III outfit, finished the 2015-16 athletic campaign with a record of 11-9-6.

There’s a pre-existing Kimberley connection to the program, as former Nitro Bryce Nielsen just completed his second season in Henniker. Nielsen, a native of Laguna Hills, Calif., spent two campaigns in the KIJHL, finishing his junior career by playing eight regular-season games with the Dynamiters at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season.

“It’s a big hockey central town [along the East Coast] and it’s kind of in the heart of everything,” Haase said. “I couldn’t ask much more of that. I know Bryce Nielsen, he

played here [in Kimberley] before I came. He had nothing bad to say about it. The coaching staff was really good and the coach sounded like he wanted me pretty bad.”

Apart from the Kimberley connection, there’s also a widespread California flavour to the Pilgrims program, meaning Haase will be right at home, despite being nearly 5,000 km from his hometown in sunny southern California.

There were six California natives populating the Pilgrims roster in 2015-16.

So while there will be plenty of familiarity in faces and backgrounds to help ease Haase’s transition, making the jump from junior hockey to college hockey is never an easy task.

So what does the big Haase expect the biggest challenge to be?

“I hear there’s more snow,” Haase said with a hearty laugh.

“Even more than here [in Kimberley]. I think being in Kimberley helped being away [from home] but I think the biggest thing will be getting back into the school route and routine. Juggling that, hockey and lifestyle and whatnot will be the most difficult part.”

Though he hasn’t settled on it completely, Haase believes he is going to enrol in business studies at New England College as he starts his post-secondary education.

“I just want to thank all the fans,” Haase said. “Through thick and thin, I think they’ve always been there for us. They’ve all stuck with us, especially through the playoffs. We got some welcoming thoughts from them after we lost a couple games there. To see that, it gives you the extra bit of confidence, that extra bit of motivation to go into the next game.

“You really want to do it for the fans and win it for them. Everybody in the town, it’s just been so welcoming and such a great feeling to play here.”

Raptors coach will use early start time to motivate players C anadian Press

TORONTO - Dwane Casey said the Toronto Raptors would be ready to play “at six o’clock in the morning” if the schedule so demanded.

But the Raptors

coach believes his team deserves better.

The Raptors were slotted into the 12:30 p.m. tipoff time for Saturday’s playoff series opener against the visiting Indiana Pacers -

proof, says Casey, that the team has yet to receive respect from league schedulers it deserves.

“Evidently someone doesn’t respect us,” Casey said Thursday.

“We have all these 12:30 games and they look at us, the team north of the border that plays the early games when the people out west are still asleep. We’ll use that as a little motivation too.”

Eskimos extend QB Mike Reilly’s contract C anadian Press

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Eskimos signed quarterback Mike Reilly to a contract extension through the 2018 season Thursday.

Reilly capped the 2015 season leading Edmonton to a 26-20 Grey Cup win over the Ottawa Redblacks in November and was

named the game’s outstanding player.

The six-foot-three, 230-pound Reilly began his CFL career in 2010 with the B.C. Lions and was dealt to Edmonton in January 2013 for the Eskimos’ second-round picks in the ‘13 and ‘14 CFL drafts.

The 31-year-old suffered a

knee injury in Edmonton’s season-opening loss to Toronto last year.

Reilly returned for the Eskimos’ Labour Day contest versus Calgary before leading the club on a 10-game win streak to end the season, capping it off with the Grey Cup victory.

If the Raptors are truly Canada’s team, their west coast fans will have to tune in at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. By comparison, Golden State hosts Houston at 12:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, while Memphis hosts San Antonio at noon local time in Game 4 on Apr. 24. The next earliest games are Golden State in Houston at 2:30 local time on April 24, and the Raptors’ game in Indiana at 3 p.m. ET on April 23.

The Raptors opened the previous two series at 12:30 p.m. as well, last year against Washing-

ton and the previous year versus Brooklyn.

“I don’t know the reasoning why we’ve been put in that position,” Casey said. “We’re the No. 2 team in the Eastern Conference. We feel like we should have a premiere time slot. . . .

We feel like we have an exciting team and we’ve earned the right by winning 56 games to be a primetime game.”

Casey said the early tipoff time, from a preparation position, is not his “first choice,” but the players can use as a chip on their collective shoulders.

“We have to earn respect,” he said. “We’ve done that all year and we have to continue to do it all year, we have to earn the respect of the league to prove we are who we are and our record is what it is.”

Toronto baseball fans were outraged when the Blue Jays made their first playoff appearance in 22 years last season, and were slotted into afternoon start times. Their beef was more about the fact they were weekday games, so many people had to beg off work to watch.

LOS ANGELES - Kobe Bryant scored 60 incredible points. He carried a miserable Los Angeles Lakers team to an improbable comeback victory.

And with sweat and confetti all over his gold uniform for the final time, he expressed humble thanks to his fans and family for their loving support over two decades.

“What else can I say?”

Bryant asked. “Mamba out.”

Now that’s a Hollywood ending to a remarkable career.

Bryant utterly dominated his final game Wednesday night, wrapping up 20 NBA seasons with one last offensive showcase in the Lakers’ 101-96 victory over the Utah Jazz.

He scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, posting his first 50-point game since February 2009 and rallying

the Lakers from a 15-point deficit to win the final game of the worst season in franchise history.

It was messy, ridiculous and magical - even to the man who did it so many times over 20 years.

“It’s hard to believe it happened this way,” Bryant said. “I’m still shocked about it.”

With the entire Staples Center crowd standing, Bryant made a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left. He hit another with 31 seconds to play, putting the Lakers ahead 97-96. He finished with an assist before checking out for good with 4.1 seconds left in just the Lakers’ 17th win of the season.

“The perfect ending would have been a championship,” Bryant said with a smile. “But tonight was (me) trying to go out, play hard and try to put on a show as much as I possibly could. It felt good to be able to do

that one last time.”

Bryant and his teammates conspired for one last omnivorous scoring performance by the third-leading scorer in NBA history. He played 42 minutes and took a career-high 50 shots, his teammates attempting to set him up for points on nearly every possession.

Kobe came up with the fifth highest-scoring game of his career. He became the oldest player to score 50 points in an NBA game with his highest-scoring performance since getting 61 against New York in 2009 oh, and he had four assists and four rebounds.

The Lakers sprayed him with champagne in the locker room, although he didn’t like it: “That’s only for championships.”

It was still one last classic from the Black Mamba.

“It just didn’t surprise me, the way he would go out,” said Lakers coach

Byron Scott, Bryant’s teammate in his rookie season.

“Sixty points wasn’t a surprise. I knew he had it in him.”

The entire night was a tribute to Bryant, who is retiring after 20 seasons, five championship rings and 18 All-Star selections with the Lakers, who honoured him before and after the game.

Bryant is just the fifth player in NBA history to play 20 seasons, and the first with just one team.

“I think the most important part is that we all stayed together throughout,” Bryant said to the crowd. “You’ll always be in my heart, and I sincerely, sincerely appreciate it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you guys.”

He also had a few laughs after finishing his 1,346th regular-season game with 33,643 career points.

“The thing that had me cracking up all night long is,

I go through 20 years of everybody screaming to pass the ball,” Bryant said with a grin. “And then the last night, they’re like, ‘Don’t pass it!”’

It was daylong tribute with thousands of fans thronging the downtown streets around Staples Center and chanting his name from early afternoon. Fans lucky enough to get inside Staples Center greeted him with ovations at every opportunity. Magic Johnson anchored a brief pregame tribute by calling Bryant “the biggest and greatest celebrity we’ve had in this town for 20 years” and “the greatest to wear the purple and gold.”

Bryant embraced his roles as a hero and villain throughout his career, and he mentioned the duality in describing his outlook on sports afterward. He had rocky times in Los Angeles, from his sexual assault

charge in Colorado in 2003 to his feud with Shaquille O’Neal, who watched the finale at courtside.

It was all forgotten by the time Bryant took the Staples court for the final time.

After blowing kisses and pounding his heart before the game, Bryant got right to work on what the fans wanted to see. He didn’t count on the nerves that caused him to miss his first five shots before he pump-faked and finally connected on a jumper.

Titans to trade No. 1 overall draft pick NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Titans have traded the No. 1 overall selection in this month’s NFL draft to the Los Angeles Rams for a collection of picks in one of the biggest deals in league history.

In a deal agreed to Wednesday night and announced Thursday, Tennessee swaps the top pick to the Rams along with its choices in the fourth and sixth rounds.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My wife and I have been married for five years and we have two children. In the past year, she has been exceptionally critical and unloving.

I work full time. I also cook every meal, do all of the laundry, clean the house, do the grocery shopping and help with the children. My wife works from home as a private tutor. She pays the bills and handles most of the financial stuff. Right now, her job pays better than mine, so I feel obligated to do more around the house despite being gone for much of the day.

It seems as though 90 percent of our conversations are about how disappointed she is in me. She says that I am burdening her with carrying the family because “she has to have a job for us to make it.” I already feel terrible about this without her emphasizing it, but I am clueless as to how to change the situation.

She complains about things she wants me to do, but when I do them, she questions my sincerity, saying I only did it because she nagged me. She often uses foul language, calls me names and insists things will never get better. She frequently threatens to divorce me if things don’t improve immediately.

Right now, I don’t talk to her much, because everything becomes an opportunity for her to criticize me, but she seeks me out. I have to walk away to avoid saying things in anger, and then she snipes at my walking away.

Annie, I promised to love her for better or worse, so I often wish I were dead.

But I love my kids and don’t want them to grow up without a father. She won’t try counseling, because she doesn’t want other people to know. -- Can’t Win in Tennessee Dear Tennessee: Anyone who calls you names, constantly criticizes and threatens divorce is behaving abusively. There is no cause for her to complain that she has to work. The days when a husband needed to be the sole provider are long gone.

Counselors do not broadcast the names of their clientele. Your wife doesn’t want to go for counseling because it might require that she change how she behaves.

This is too bad, because she’d be much happier if the two of you could work on this together. Since she refuses, go without her. And if the constant berating doesn’t let up, try the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. You need help.

Dear Annie: “Embarrassed About the Next Generation” must not know many young people. As a recent graduate of the public education system, I can report that I learned to analyze complex problems and formulate lengthy, coherent statements, thanks to my quality instruction, and so did the majority of my peers. I can indeed articulate what I want, and that’s to not hear the phrase “kids these days” ever again. -- Insulted by the Previous Generation Dear Insulted: Thanks for weighing in on the other side. We’re with you.

Trout Hatchery celebrating 50 Years For the Townsman

For 50 years the Kootenay Trout Hatchery has been raising fish, stocking lakes and introducing people to the pleasures of freshwater fishing. Over the five decades the hatchery has expanded its mandate, taking on conservation initiatives and community outreach to encourage a love of fishing and an appreciation for our lakes and rivers. To celebrate this milestone the hatchery is hosting a family fun day on April 23, showcasing the hatcheryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and offering family-friendly fishing activities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While the Kootenay Trout Hatchery has always been first and foremost a fish hatchery, we are very proud of how it has evolved to become a focal point for conservation and freshwater fishing in the community,â&#x20AC;? says hatchery manager Owen Schoenberger. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We welcome more visitors to the hatchery every year and it is exciting to help develop a new generation of responsible anglers and to educate people about conservation initiatives, such as our work with white sturgeon.â&#x20AC;?

The Kootenay Trout Hatchery was opened in 1966 as a Provincial trout hatchery with a seven person staff consisting of a hatchery manager, assistant manager, three fish culturists, an office manager, and maintenance supervisor. A state of the art facility at the time, fish were reared in open raceways that would freeze over in the winter.

Water was sourced from nearby Norbury Creek.

In 1983, the water source was switched to two wells, ensuring a more consistent water supply. Because it was a groundwater source, fish were not exposed to disease or pathogens sometimes present in the river water. In 1987 the raceways were covered and wells supplying water to the hatchery were increased to four. The raceways no longer froze over and winter working conditions became much more pleasant for staff.

In 1998, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho finalized an agreement with the Province to establish a sturgeon facility at the Kootenay Trout Hatchery and the following

year the facility began raising Kootenai sturgeon. The Freshwater Fisheries Society released their last Kootenai white sturgeon in 2015 as the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho are now administering this successful recovery program at their new hatchery in Bonnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ferry, Idaho.

Ownership of the hatchery was transferred to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC in 2003, shortly after the Society was created. In the spring of that year the Upper Columbia White Sturgeon rearing program was transferred to the Kootenay Trout Hatchery where it is operated in conjunction with the Kootenay River Sturgeon Conservation Hatchery. These programs have supported habitat research, restocking and re-introduction efforts from the USA border to the Kinbasket Reservoir.

In 2007, the hatchery opened their onsite fishing pond. The pond was built in a large part from community donations and it continues to be a focal point in the community. In that first year just over 1,000 youth fished the pond in the Learn to Fish program. Last year more than 6,000 youth and their parents participated in a Learn to Fish program at the hatchery pond.

In 2015 a number of upgrades were undertaken to reduce energy usage and improve the hatcheryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operating efficiency. Circular ponds replaced the fish rearing raceways. Water usage is anticipated to drop from 2.5 billion litres to 0.5 billion litres per year, drawn from five groundwater wells.

The improved tank design constantly moves waste out of the system, reducing the time required to clean the tanks. With better access to feed throughout the tank, fish are

better able to convert food to body mass, reducing variance in fish size. The result is more consistent, better conditioned, healthier fish released into rivers and lakes throughout the region.

The hatchery also expects to reduce electricity consumption by about 264,000 kilowatt hours per year, about 22% of overall usage, as a result of less water pumping and warming.

The Kootenay Hatchery annually raises 1.3 million kokanee, cutthroat trout, brook char and rainbow trout for the recreational fishery in addition to sturgeon.

The fish are stocked in 150 lakes in the East and West Kootenays. Some fish are provided to the Clearwater and Summerland Trout Hatcheries for stocking interior and northern regions of the province. The Kootenay and Clearwater Trout Hatcheries are the only facilities that stock kokanee salmon in BC. The hatchery now employs an office manager, assistant manager, maintenance supervisor, hatchery manager, a sturgeon manager, three fish culturists, two seasonal fish culturists and six seasonal tour guides.

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kootenay Trout Hatchery will be celebrating the hatcheryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 50th Anniversary with an Open House on April 23, 2016 from 10 am to 3 pm. Everyone is invited to get to know the hatchery better with tours through the recently renovated hatchery, fish rearing and lake stocking discussions with a fish culturist and fish culture demonstrations.

Family activities include fishing, face painting and activities at the pond as well as birthday cake and goodie bags for the kids. The Bull River Rancherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s BBQ Association will have a food concession available.

Cranbrook has seen an influx of counterfeit American money and have located the people and printer responsible.

Over the past few days Cranbrook RCMP has had numerous complaints of counterfeit American money being used at different businesses around town.

A suspicious delivery person reported to the RCMP that he felt he had been the recipient of counterfeit money and was able to provide useful information to the RCMP. The information provided led the RCMP to a motel in town where a man and woman were located. Also located was a large amount of counterfeit

American money and a printer used in making the money.

Both occupants were arrested for charges including Possession of Counterfeit Money, Uttering Counterfeit Money and Obstruction. The 27 year old man also has outstanding warrants from Alberta and Saskatchewan for Uttering and Producing Counterfeit Money. The 35 year old woman has outstanding warrants from Alberta for Uttering Counterfeit Money. Both are residents of Alberta.

Cranbrook RCMP is asking any businesses in the area who may have had any suspected counterfeit money given to them over the past week to contact the Cranbrook RCMP.

Teck facility spills runoff water Tr ail Times

About 90 litres of runoff water from a Teck Metal’s facility spilled into a creek near Trail on Wednesday, the B.C. Ministry of Environment said.

“The discharge is believed to be the result of a break in a line carrying

runoff water from an historic landfill area to the on-site water treatment facility,” the ministry said in a statement.

The spill lasted for about 15 to 20 minutes into Stoney Creek, which flows into the Columbia River. The ministry said it was then re-

ported to have been stopped and contained.

Ministry officials were in contact with staff at Teck’s smelting and refining complex and samples of the water were taken.

Officials in Washington State and other agencies were notified.
