“50 artists. One month. See and hear what they did in a place you’ve never been before.” The open invitation from organizers of an art event unlike anything seen in the Creston Valley promises to open the eyes of residents to the remarkable range of art created in the area. Paintings, sculpture, ceramics, music, dance, film, spoken word and drama — expect the unexpected, says Gary Deatherage, one of the event’s organizers. “The first step was an evening six weeks ago that we named Call and Response, based on the old blues music tradition,” he said. Deatherage’s co-creator of the event, Alison Masters, described how the 45 invited artists were shown samples of music, writing, film and paintings, then given Ziploc bags “containing things to smell, such as soil, limes, leather. They heard sound recordings, saw video clips, and felt inside cloth bags containing objects that were smooth, heavy or rough. These were the calls.” Artists — more than actually attended the event — responded in droves. “We are expecting 13 performances pieces and another 40 or more art pieces,” Deatherage said. “After the call was given, they quite simply got down to work,” Masters said. The artist response evening will be held on Friday at the former (and soon to be renamed) Kootenay Hotel. Doors to the April 15 event open at 6:30 p.m. and guests are invited to dress warmly because the building is under renovation and is unheated.

n celebration of Earth Day (April 22), the Regional District of Central Kootenay is promoting its annual Trash to Treasure (T2T) event on Saturday. T2T is a zerowaste focused event that provides residents with an opportunity to give away unwanted but useful household items to those who may find value in them. Participating in T2T is easy and encourages reuse while diverting waste from the region’s landfills. After all, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure! On April 16, residents are encouraged to place any gently used, unwanted household items (such as books, bicycles, clothing, toys and furniture) together at the front of their properties. Residents should clearly display a “T2T” or “Free” sign (samples are available on the RDCK website) so that treasure hunters will know which items are available to

take home. By 4 p.m. the same day, all remaining items should be gathered up and taken off the street. Posters and site signs are available at tinyurl.com/rdck-t2t. •••

Hayden and Nadine Persad brought home gold and silver medals from the West Kootenay Boundary Regional Science Fair in Nelson on April 2. Hayden, who is a Grade 6 Adam Roberston Elementary School student, earned a gold medal for innovation. Nadine, a fourth grader, earned a silver medal for her project about the “best before” dates on food packaging. “I want to make clean energy for the world — something I can use in my daily life,” Hayden said. His project, “Walking on Energy: The Power of a Step”, demonstrates how energy is created when pressure is put on certain solids, including crystals. After researching piezoelectricity, Hayden ordered small metal discs containing crystals (“We got 16 discs for $16,” he said) and other necessities. “I had to learn to use a ‘breadboard’ and to make a diode rectifier to change the AC current that the piezoelectric disc makes into DC current that the LED light uses,” he said. He set the discs and wiring into a rubber mat that is placed on a step. When person walking on the stairs treads on the mat, the pressure creates mechanical stress that produc-

es a tiny spark of electricity that activates an LED light. It is the same technology that creates the spark in a pushbutton barbecue starter or quartz watch. “It’s used on dance floors and light-up shoes, too,” he said. “I think the discs could be put into car tires to create energy when the car is moving.” He is already planning another project for next year’s competition that will feature a bigger model to generate more electricity. “The judges said I could just keep going on and on with my food projects,” said Nadine. In previous years she has done projects demonstrating that aging corn kernels affects how they pop and about how gummy bears absorb various types of liquids. This year, Nadine’s interest was stimulated when “my mom gave me a yogurt that was past its ‘best before’ date.” For her project, “How Do They Know?”, she researched on the Internet about how those dates are determined and then went on a shopping excursion to purchase different brands of yogurt. She and her family sampled the different brands over a span of days that began before the best before date and ended a week after the date had passed. She was fascinated that in different brands varying

amounts of whey floated to the surface of the yogurt. “Liberty yogurt had a little more whey,” she said. Even a week after the best before date the yogurt tasted fine. “In my research I learned that yogurt can be eaten until it starts to mould,” she said. “I’m not sure how long that would take.” Like her brother, Nadine looks for ways in which her projects can change lives. In a visit to Overwaitea Foods, she queried manager Ron World about how the store deals with best before dates. With yogurt, she said, the product is pulled from shelves two days before the date printed on the packaging. “I asked him what happens to that yogurt and Ron said it is thrown away,” she said. “Then I told him that our school has a breakfast program and that the yogurt could be used for that so it doesn’t go to waste.” Now, she said, arrangements are being made to include that yogurt in the school program. “This is going to help lots of kids have a healthy breakfast in the morning,” she wrote in her project. Nadine doesn’t know what the subject for her next project will be, but food has become a fascination. “I learned that about onethird of the food in the world goes to waste,” she said. “I want to find ways to make sure more of it gets used.”

IHA adding substance treatment beds BY BILL METCALFE Nelson Star

The Interior Health Authority will open 16 substance use treatment beds in the Kootenay Boundary next year. The contract will be awarded this summer and the facility is expected to be ready by the summer of 2017, according to Chris Huston, the IHA’s mental health and substance abuse adminstrator. He says the facility will fill an important gap. “This is something that we have not provided in the area before,” Huston said. The exact location of the facility is not yet known. Cheryl Dowden, executive director of ANKORS (AIDS Network Outreach and Support Society), says the announcement is good news because currently people have to go to Kamloops, Kelowna, or the Lower Mainland for treatment. “I am thrilled to hear these beds are coming to our region,” she said. “For people who want to go through detox and treatment there have been so many challenges. So having detox and treatment available closer to home is huge.” ANKORS provides a variety of harm-reduction and education services related to sexual health, drug use, addiction and HIV. A private company will run the planned facility under contract to the IHA. It will have eight support recovery beds and eight withdrawal management beds. The withdrawal beds are a form of short term acute care commonly known as detox. “If you think of the substance use as a continuum,” Huston says, “the beginning is withdrawal. Someone is actively using to the point where substance misuse is taking up a great part of their life and if they stopped they could experience life-threatening symptoms. So we provide a place

with physician and professional nursing support to allow them to withdraw safely with a medication managed process.” He said withdrawal management is a short term process, usually five to seven days. “For some it is the beginning of change, but for others it is just a break. They may be so medically compromised that if they stopped the substance abuse for a period of time, the medical benefit [of the break] could be significant for them, even without a commitment to stop using in the future. But for some people this initiates the supports that will allow them to make a profound change in their lives, curbing or abstaining from substance abuse.” The eight recovery beds, Huston says, are for longer term treatment — from one to six months — and are for people who want to discontinue substance use, “but who are not feeling able or comfortable to do that in their home setting in their family or community, so a support recovery bed is a place with professional support that would help them maintain their goal of recovery.” The treatment is residential — the patient will live in a small apartment in the facility. The service will be staffed with life skills support workers trained to work in substance abuse and mental health. Also during their stay, patients will be in contact with a variety of other outside supports for both their physical and mental health. “You would be committing to a health care plan of recovery,” Huston says, “and having somebody check in with you to support recovery and maintain your health care goals.” The facility will be part of a larger program of 73 beds to be introduced across the health authority, including four support beds to be provided by an aboriginal organization in an as-yet-unknown location.

Open for business

“Ah, that would have to be my children,” she said. “They’re the business.” Imagine those words being spoken in the loveliest, liltingest Irish brogue. In the car last week I caught the tale end of a CBC Radio interview with an Irish author whose name I didn’t catch. She was answering a series of prepared questions, one of which asked, “What is your greatest achievement?” Her response was so beautifully said that I couldn’t help but thinking back to raising our own kids, and about how gobsmacked parents can become. Then, later in the week, I had the chance to sit and chat with two elementary school students who won medals in the regional science fair recently. Brother and sister Hayden and Nadine Persad arrived at my office in the company of their mother, but Karen was pretty much a bystander. Hayden, a Grade 6 student, was barely through my office door when he pulled part of his science project from a bag and launched into an explanation of how piezoelectricity works. Piezoelectricity? Are you kidding me? If I hadn’t Googled the word a few minutes before his arrival I would not have had the slightest idea of what it is and how it works. Once Hayden had given me an introductory lesson into this fascinating bit of science, the patient Nadine, who is in Grade 4, jumped in to tell me about her project. Hayden and Nadine are old hands at science fairs. They obviously love learning and are good and thoughtful researchers. No doubt they get plenty of support from their parents, but make no mistake —

these projects were the kids’ own labours. Farmers’ market visitors might recall them selling their handiworks at a table last summer. As I learned about their projects I couldn’t help but think of my own

Lorne Eckersley single foray into the science fair world, when two schoolmates and I put together a display about UFOs, which were a hot topic in Calgary in the 1960s. That project, made when we were in junior high, couldn’t have held a candle to the Persads’ efforts. For Hayden’s project, he researched piezoelectricity, which is the creation of energy when certain crystals are put under pressure. He ordered loonie-sized discs of metal containing crystals and a cut a rubber-like mat to protect them, then learned to wire the discs to a little gizmo (a diode rectifier bridge) that changes the electricity from alternating to direct current. Step on the rubber mat and the resulting energy powers tiny lights. It is very cool, because no moving parts are involved, aside from the pressure of a foot landing on the discs. He also learned to wire two or more discs in sequence to generate more power. Nadine has a particular interest in food and how much of it is

wasted (about a third of all food produced never gets consumed, she says) and picks projects that might make a difference in her own life. Her fourth grade project idea came when her mom gave her a container of yogurt that was past its “best before” date. When does yogurt go bad, she wondered. In her research she learned that the dates printed on food packages are not “expiry” dates, but guides indicating when the food taste and quality might begin to decline. Producers, not the government, calculate the dates. “Do you think that’s a good idea?” I asked. Could the dates be manipulated so more food is thrown out, resulting in increased sales? “Yes, we talked about that,” she said. The especially cool thing about Nadine’s project was that her curiosity pushed her to make a visit to Overwaitea Foods, where she asked manager Ron World about what happens to yogurt that is past its best before date. When she learned that it is pulled from shelves two days before that date is reached, she started a ball rolling and says that arrangements are now being made for that yogurt to be picked up for the Adam Robertson Elementary School breakfast program. When Nadine and Hayden left my office I couldn’t stop smiling. How great to be able to chat with these two bright, enthusiastic, articulate and very thoughtful youngsters. They made my week. They are, I have been telling people in my best Irish accent, the business! Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Beaver traps not a fit with CVWMA To the Editor: I visit the Summit Creek Park most days and take my dog along the various trails I have come to know over the past 20 years or so. Last night, I took a trail that runs along the edge of a beaver pond that I have watched being constructed over the past year. This trail, if you were to follow it, eventually leads to Williams Creek and the falls above. There are numerous beavers in the area. What surprised me was the sudden appearance of signage warning me that I should keep my dog on a leash as there is a trapping program on right now. The signage is lacking because anyone entering the park (especially someone new to the park), following the trail and letting their dog run ahead won’t see the warning until it is too late. There is no warning at the gate entrance. Granted, there is a notification that insists all dogs be leashed while in the park. Most people I meet in the park don’t leash their dogs. If I see no vehicles at the entrance, I let my dog run free because I know no one else is in the park and, anyway, I take the trails less used. I am more concerned about the reasons for trapping beavers anywhere in the park. One of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Authority’s mandates is to ensure the diversity of habitats and wildlife. I am aware of the damage done by these beavers and have noted the carnage they have created in some areas by the number of trees they have felled — and the sizes of some of these trees would astound you! But just the same, they belong in the area and are an integral part of the ecosystem. I witnessed the same trapping program several years ago when a similar tactic was used, complete with the use of heavy machinery to smash the beaver dam. The same amount of water runs through to the slough despite being slowed by a beaver dam. The leghold traps look pretty brutal and are set beneath the surface of the water along the pond’s edge. I can imagine some poor beaver stepping on one and having to drown slowly. I don’t pretend to be knowledgeable about traps or trapping but this just seems like a pretty significant disconnect in the pristine settings of Summit Creek Park. Bruce Paterson Creston

More trails would boost ecotourism To the Editor: After reading both “Trails Society Proposes New Footpath” (March 24 Advance) and wildlife area communications director Carla Ahern’s concerns, in the March and April I Love Creston magazines, whether it is dogs (and their owners) causing problems at the wildlife centre or on any town or Regional District of Central Kootenay lands, face it: Stepping in dog droppings or having unrestrained pets unduly stressing wildlife is not acceptable. A few years back, I moved here from Golden simply because I love the outdoors and this is one of the most beautiful areas in B.C., with the highest potential. When I left

there, Golden had far more trails and access to its beautiful areas than this wonderful valley we live in. There are many people in this valley who value access to natural areas, and love hiking. Arrow Mountain (what some call Goat Mountain) could (and should) be a mecca for those who love these activities, not to mention the building of a path from the old ferry crossing all the way to the dike road at Duck lake or upgrades to Mount Thompson (and the trail across the top of the Skimmerhorns). Having people take their pets to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is, at best, problematic, as indicated by Ahern, and though it is a move ahead, a mere half-kilometre trail should be only the tip of the iceberg relative to what this area really needs, instead of “an informal network of paths in the area, beaten down by pedestrians.” We hear about this type of infrastructure happening in Nelson and Castlegar, and many other places in our Central Kootenay area, but I personally feel we have a far more beautiful area with much more potential. If it is done it right, Creston could really benefit in terms of ecotourism, rather than the money grab aspects of the tourist industry (which, fortunately, we don’t have much of). I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love the small-town feel of Creston, and although the area is moving ahead, we have to strive to protect the wonderful features of this area — and no, I won’t go into the discussion of repairing or repainting our heritage grain elevators or the removal of the eyesore bunker. Let’s just move ahead! Duncan Simpson Creston

Plans in the works for elevators To the Editor: (Re: “Elevators, Bunker Need Paint Job” by Michael Bunn, March 17 Advance) While I can only speak to your concern of the grain elevators, I would first like to touch on your overall letter. You start with the godawful concrete bunker, and how painting murals of a forest and a bunch of critters will somehow turn the town into a major tourist destination. It seems you have the idea but don’t go into any detail about how this would be accomplished. You then move right along to the town sending me a letter saying, “Paint the elevators or tear them down.” What a can of worms such a letter would open! What about all the houses in town that need paint? Perhaps they too should receive such a letter. You and I could get together and start a demolition business. If you had done any homework, you may have found there are plans in the works involving both elevators. There’s also a lot of history here on “Tobacco Road”. A copy of the history of the elevators is available at the Creston Museum. Regarding the Mounties speeding through the school zone every day since you moved here: My apologies to the RCMP if the paint job on the elevators causes them to speed in your particular area. If you have such evidence, a picture or even a licence plate number, you could take that information to the detachment and I am sure it will be dealt with. You, or anyone else, is welcome to drop by and talk to me personally, as I will be at the elevators for the rest of this month. Ray Gauthier Arrow Creek

Swim club encourages teamwork

To the Editor: Swim club was one of few sports I did not participate in growing up. I was not introduced to swimming until our four-year-old son joined the Creston Wave Swim Club. I have been most impressed with swim club for many reasons. Swim club provides the benefits of both individual and team sports. I love that swimming celebrates achieving personal best times as much or more than what place a swimmer came in. The ribbon given when a personal best time is achieved is larger and fancier than the place ribbons. Although swimming is mostly an individual sport, there is also a strong sense of team. Swimmers can participate on relay teams, as well as participate in team building activities during the summer, such as hikes, mini golfing and movie nights. At swim meets, the team aspect is prevalent as they cheer each other on and have fun while waiting for their events. Swimming is important for children’s health and safety. Learning how to swim is, of course, imperative for safety around water, but what swim club provides that swimming lessons do not is strength and endurance. If there were an accident on the water, I am confident that my children will not only have the ability to swim but also the strength to stay in or get out of the water if needed. Swimming is a great low-impact exercise with very minimal risk of injury that they can continue for life. One of the unique aspects of swimming is the multi-age grouping and the role modelling this provides. Although there are two practice times for junior and senior swimmers, often there are senior swimmers who volunteer and help with the junior practice. Last year while watching our son play soccer during a morning dryland practice, I remember thinking how lucky he was to be surrounded by such great older role models, both as athletes and students. Since joining swim club, I have watched our current head coach progress from participant, volunteer with the junior swimmers and assistant coach to head coach. Some may be afraid to join swimming because of the time commitment. One of the great aspects of swimming is that you can compete in as many or as few swim meets as you want. Swim meets are held in Creston, Trail, Salmo, Grand Forks, Kimberley, Castlegar and Colville, Wash. Practices are held Monday to Thursdays, with some morning practices starting in July. We have missed many practices over the last few seasons due to conflicts with other sports, vacations or just wanted a day at the lake. With over 70 practices in the season I know that even if we miss a few we are still getting our money’s worth. All ages are welcome. The youngest division is age six and under. Swimmers in this division swim one length across the pool and can have another swimmer in the pool with them for assistance. There is no prerequisite to know any of the swim strokes; coaches are there to teach them. I feel lucky that my children have such a great opportunity here in Creston and hope more will join this wonderful team. Carolyn Ziefflie Canyon

So, do these techno wonders work? Pretty sure they do, but whether you need one is a different question. What is your objective in gathering all this info? Do you have a fitness regime you are following, in which case you have a measurable way of seeing progress, perhaps sooner than your bathroom scale tells you something you don’t want to

hear? Like anything with technology, however, it’s garbage in, garbage out — if you don’t enter in all the info accurately, you can’t expect the device to calculate and provide useful information, much like talking to your doctor and omitting pertinent details. One piece of useful advice I came across is, “Don’t trust

the device more than you trust yourself.” In other words, if your body is saying it’s done but your fitness tracker is saying do another 20 minutes, I would opt to listen your body; I don’t believe there is an app yet to tell you how you feel. Warmth brings blossoms out

It is early April but the weather is warm. The first asparagus spears have popped up in the garden. The apricot trees are in bloom. As per usual we had a touch of

season. Every year is a little different! In the nursery, there are several plants in bloom, perennial plants like the primulas, bleeding hearts and doronicum, and hardy shrubs like the red flowering currant and the yellow flowering forysthias. Many trees even flower at this time of year, magnolias and maples, for instance. Some flowers are a lot more noticeable that others. One shrub in Evan Davies flower now is frost the other morning but I Fothergilla “Mount Airy”. They hatch into worms that kill the top shoots and disfigure these beautiful ornamental trees. Now is the time to deal with them. One more note: You may also want to water in some of the evergreen plants you transplanted last year. The ground may not be as moist as it is normally at this time of year. deep heart of our species. Without this, our species would not go on. In other species, mothers give birth and then move on. It works for them, but in humans it doesn’t work. Unless mothers feel like mothers, we don’t go on. Dogen’s proposal of motherhood as a model for spiritual development is radical. Usually, spiritual quest involves a hero who leaves his family, rejects all help, and goes forth. But spiritual transformation isn’t about having a fantastic experience that makes us smarter than others. It’s about the common events of human life, such as giving birth. My heart is open now. I identify with others. I have kindness and concern for all beings. Dogen is saying that every time our practice goes deeper it is because we are going deeper into feeling a motherly care for others. Suggested practice: Imagine a world in which everyone saw all beings as their children or grandchildren. What then? Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Sakura-ji, Creston’s zendo. Sun power, solar panels, greenhouses

out in the sun and benefit from automatic physical controls. However, none of these would be of much help if Earth were to vary by one very small fraction in its distance from the sun. If the sun were slightly farther away we would freeze to death and if it was a fraction closer we would roast to death. It is of considerable benefit, to us and all life, that the orbits of the sun, Earth and other planets stay precisely in the same path. Much is written about the sun and how much it means to mankind and also to all forms of life. “Truly the light is sweet, And it is pleasant for the eyes to behold the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 11:7, New King James Version) Many plants are phototropic, turning to the light and to the sun. In evening, some species face the setting sun but turn, the following morning, to face its warming and lifegiving rays. The sunrays warm up plants and provide essential rays that enable plants’ life processes to go on from spring’s leaf emergence to autumn’s leaf falling. Billions of leaves, “solar panels”, spread their blades in the spring to become food factories for the plant, hence providing firsthand nutrition for herbivores and to those of us who choose to be first-order consumers. How many leaves does a tree have ? A very large tree might have 250,000 leaves. Now, spreading them on the ground one layer deep (if that were possible) they would cover just under 14,000 square feet if each leaf had eight square inches of surface. That is a very large solar panel array. (Six electrical energy solar panels might cover 90 square feet.) That is for a broad-leaved tree. A coniferous tree has leaves too. We say they have needles but actually coniferous trees in this area are needle-leaved trees. (Spruce leaves feel like needles.) Needle leaves are very efficient solar panels. Individually, they have a very small area but collectively they more than totally shade the ground. As much as leaves are solar panels, flowers are solar collectors and sun catchers. One very striking flower sun catcher is the Ozark sun drop. Its bright yellow eve-

The sun is not just essential but has a very critical and powerful role in our biosphere. If there were no sun, there would be no life, either plant or animal. Life on Earth depends on both direct and indirect sunlight to survive. We are indebted to the sun for every

Out There Ed McMackin minute of life from one day to the next. How often do we even think of that? And, yet, the sun is a long way away, all of 93 million miles, so they tell us. It must be very powerful to give us heat and the right kinds of rays from that far away to keep us healthy both physically and emotionally. Scientists tell us that the sun is so powerful that if one part of it, the size of a pinhead, were placed within 100 miles of one of us it would kill us. I prefer that the sun keep its distance. The sun, as a matter of fact, can keep its distance in both being not too close and, yes, not too far away either. Now plants, to some degree, control the effect of the warmth and light they get from the sun by turning, like sunflowers, to the sun, folding their leaves, closing pores and so on. Humans and animals can seek shade, get

ning primrose blooms may reach as many as six inches in diameter, a truly magnificent yellow saucer shape that can cheer any heart, especially in the afternoon and evening, hence the name evening primrose. Sun catchers come in many different shapes, sizes and colors and designs to suit the need. I think of alpine lanterns (Selene uralensis) found at high elevations in our Purcell Mountains. The major portion of the bloom is a bladder, a large round compartment, functioning like a miniature greenhouse or solarium housing the reproductive parts of the flower. The walls of this little greenhouse are opaque, but the sun’s warmth still gets through. This little greenhouse shelters the developing seeds from excessive cold and drying winds. A very small flower sun catcher is the scarlet pimpernel, a half-inch brick red five-petalled flower. It is phototropic, closing when shaded by clouds. Because of that, it has also been called poor man’s weather glass. A few plant names reflect the connection they have with the sun and its energy — sunflower, sundew and suncress. Many others are sunlight yellow. Plants feed the body. “Flowers feed the soul,” said Mohammed. Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. MP life in Ottawa

As we approach the six-month anniversary of the Oct. 19 federal election, I want to provide you with a brief summary of life in Ottawa as your member of Parliament. Let’s start with legislation.

•the 2016-2017 federal budget where the Liberals went from a campaign promise of three years of annual deficits of $10 billion and a balanced budget the fourth year, to a whopping $29.4 billion deficit for next year followed by significant deficits for the following three years with no balanced budgets in sight. Adding it all up, the Liberals will add $69.5 billion to our deficit over their four-year term if they meet their revenue targets. This will bring our national debt to $718.2 billion by 2019-2020! How will future generations pay it down? from the current first-past-thepost system to a form of proportional representation. I recently attended a breakfast meeting on this topic for MPs and senators and asked the presenter, who has studied PR around the world, which system he thought worked best. He suggested we check out Finland. You will be asked for your input as part of this significant change. The third bill will be looking to fulfill the Liberal campaign promise to legalize marijuana (our position was to decriminalize it, which could have already been put in place). There are many questions that need to be answered. What should the legal age be? Will it be sold only through government stores or will mom and pop businesses be licensed? Who will be allowed to grow it and under what circumstances? Governments really don’t like to miss out on taxes, so will enforcement against nonlicensed growers be increased as a result of its legalization? The minister has reaffirmed in Parliament that all existing laws should be enforced until the new legislation comes in, as police agencies were wondering what to do in the interim. Another role for MPs in Ottawa is to meet with individuals and groups important to our ridings. In the first six months, I met with over 50 organizations including CP Rail, BC Fruit Growers, a Montana state representative, BC Building Trades, BC Dairy Association, Canadian

Cattlemen’s Association, Canadian Health Coalition, Canadian Police Association, Canadian Association of Firefighters, the National Allied Golf Association, Teachers Institute, Canadian Federation of Students, Teck Resources, the Green Budget Coalition and several unions and ambassadors, to name just a few. I have also held meetings with, and written letters to, senior government ministers and staff to talk about infrastructure and other needs for the riding, and to discuss concerns related to my critic portfolio, national parks. I generally leave my apartment around 7 a.m. and return around 9 p.m. daily. While it is extremely busy, I like the fact that every day is different and every day brings new challenges and learning! Every MP works long hours both in their riding and in Ottawa, and is dedicated to their job and to their constituents. When I’m in my office in the evenings I will often see lights on in other offices long after the staff have gone home. We recently lost one of our Conservative MPs, Jim Hillyer, who exemplified that commitment. The morning of March 23 I arrived at the Valour Building for an 8 a.m. BC Caucus meeting. There is always tight security at every location frequented by MPs and senators but that morning there was more security than usual with questions being asked about what floor people were heading to. We found out later

that Jim had died in his office overnight. Even though he wasn’t feeling very well, he wanted to be in Ottawa for the presentation of the budget on March 22. After Parliament finished for the day he went to his office to catch up on work. When he didn’t call home later that night, his wife called security and asked them to look for him. They found him in his office. I felt a deep sense of sadness for his wife Livi and his four children back home in Medicine Hat, Alta., along with an intense feeling of loneliness — Ottawa can feel a long way from home sometimes. But I was pleased and proud of what happened later on that Wednesday. Parliament convened for question period at 2 p.m. but instead of the usual, and unfortunate (my words) acrimony, the prime minister and the leaders of the other four parties took the time to praise and thank Jim for who he was and for his dedication to the people of his riding of Medicine HatCardston-Warner and to Canada. After the last tribute was paid, the House of Commons shut down for the rest of the day to honour him. While we as members of Parliament come from differing perspectives, in the end we are a family of 338 people who can and do pull together in time of tragedy. It doesn’t get much more Canadian than that… Wayne Stetski is the member of Parliament for the Kootenay Columbia federal riding.

They had welcomed two sons and a daughter into their family who have blessed them with seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Her passion was the farm life on the prairie and her home was her castle. Her table was always set and her famous pies and coffee ready. Edna enjoyed her bingos and card games and skunking one at cribbage. Edna was predeceased by son Melborne in 1969 and husband Coyle in 2008, besides her parents and six of her siblings throughout the years. Edna will always be fondly remembered for her love of family, kindness and generosity. She will be dearly missed and forever loved by her son Gordon (Elsie) Duvall of Bluesky, AB; daughter Yvonne (David) Richardson of Creston, BC; brother Robert (Esther) Bradley of Oliver, BC; grandchildren: Mel, Kenny, Tracy, Kim, Dawn, Jody and Nicole; greatgrandchildren: Brandon, Brittany, Tilar, Jordyn, Natasha, Jessie and Lillian; great-great granddaughter Emmalyn; and last but not least two other very special girls, whom she referred to as “those little ones”, Annabelle and Hailey. She treasured memories of family, in-laws, nieces, nephews and many lifelong friendships throughout her many years. We would like to thank her doctor, nurses, home care team and the Swan Valley Lodge staff for all the tender loving care given to Mom (Little Edna-as they had soon nicknamed her). A Graveside Service will be held at a later date at the Waterhole Cemetery, Fairview AB. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Red Cross, 312-15th Ave N, Bag 3000, Creston, BC V0B 1G0 or charity of choice.

Gunter (Dutchie) Voigt

October 18, 1935 ~ March 31, 2016 Dutchie Voigt passed away peacefully March 31, 2016 at home, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

Dutchie Voigt was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Born in Berlin, Germany on October 18, 1935 he made his way to Canada at only 19 years old. Dutchie was a lifelong learner, showcasing his exceptional talent for the love of woodwork. As a master woodworker, Dutchie loved to create custom furniture, baby cradles and children's rocking horses for family and friends. His knack for building can be seen through the impressive model railroad village nestled in his basement. Every mountain, tree and building is lovingly designed to bring you into a whole new world. By trade he was a painter and contractor in Trail, B.C. for many years. Dutchie was talented at anything he put his mind to; keeping fish in his home aquarium, an accomplished pool player, tinkering with cars and making an amazing home cooked meal. He was also an eloquent ballroom dancer. Everyone stopped to watch Dutchie and his wife

Ingrid on the dance floor. Their polished and impeccable moves were whimsical to watch. He also loved an evening with family and friends playing cards and dice. Dutchie had a distinguished look, a heart of gold and life full of so many wonderful memories. He had a special place in his heart for animals and children, which was evident from the love he had for his dogs and the time he spent playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dutchie will be forever in our hearts. Dutchie was predeceased by his mother, father, sister and stepson Jamie Rowsell. He is survived by his wife and soulmate Ingrid Voigt; daughters Sonja (Garth) Forsyth and Tracey Voigt; son Shane Voigt; stepchildren Christina (Chad) Smith and James (Dina) House; fifteen grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kelowna Cancer Clinic in Gunter Voigt's name.

Carl Erickson, Home Town Band playing at Sasquatch SUBMITTED Carl Erickson and the Home Town Band will play at the Sasquatch on Saturday. “Here I am, after being in Creston for nearly four years, and once again the guys and I get to play for our friends here at the Sasquatch,” Erickson said. While Erickson plays guitar and tenor saxophone and sings, he will be joined in the April 16 concert by Donnie Clark on trumpet, Jason Deatherage on drums, and Micah Snow and Nelson’s James Jost on guitar and bass. Erickson has been performing for about 50 years, having started in what he calls the “turbulent ’60s” in the Nocturnals, a group that

Patricia Valerie Bertrand (nee Hay) June 26, 1940 ~ March 30, 2016

included a close friend, Ron Henschel. “We had suits, trucks and gear all over the place and did dance steps as we played and sweated,” said Erickson. “I spent years in recording studios scratching out a sort of existence. I was fortunate enough to play with all kinds of folks along the way, like Glen Campbell and Ike and Tina Turner. I was a founding member of the Six Cylinder Band in Vancouver and played with the Cement City Cowboys, along with all kinds of other groups like the Muddy Fraser Blues Band.” Tickets are $15 in advance, available at Buffalo Trails, Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books, or $18 at the door ($8 for teens). Submitted Doors open at 7 p.m. and the The Home Town Band will join Carl Erickson at the Sasquatch. show begins at 8.

Obituaries

Robert Ernest “Pat” Clarke March 17, 1929 ~ March 20, 2016

Patricia Valerie Bertrand (nee Hay), formerly of Creston, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2016 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Medicine Hat, Alberta, at the age of 75 years. Pat was born on June 26, 1940 in Geraldton, Ontario to Hazel and Ormand Hay. They moved back to Saskatchewan where Pat received her schooling in Simpson before moving to Alberta. There she met the love of her life, John Bertrand, and they married in 1964. Pat and John resided and worked in Calgary, and on retirement, moved to Champion, Alberta in 1982. They then looked to British Columbia and in 1986, they bought property in Sanka Park and Boswell before making the move into Creston, British Columbia in 1996. After her beloved John died in 2009, Pat made the move to Medicine Hat in 2012 where she remained until her passing. Pat loved to garden, enjoyed camping, cooking, music, entertaining family and friends, and had a love for animals. She was a strong, kind and generous lady who was much loved and will be forever missed.

Pat was predeceased by her husband John; her father Ormand Hay; her mother and stepfather Hazel and Fred Ulmer; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Pat leaves to mourn her brothers Howie (Bonnie) Ulmer, Dean (Margaret) Ulmer, Jay Ulmer, Rod (Barb) Ulmer; her sister Joan (Terry) O’Connor; sisterin-law Betty Utigaard; brother-in-law Paul Bertrand; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. At Pat’s request, there will be no funeral service. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences may be sent through www.saamis.com or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Pat Bertrand. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORIUM, “The Chapel in the Park” Medicine Hat, Alberta. Should you wish any additional information, please telephone 1-800-317-2647.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. “Pat” Clarke after 87 years of living an active and fulfilling life. Pat was a dedicated veterinarian all his working life. Upon completion of his studies at the University of Guelph in 1954 he and his young family returned to Abbotsford where he began his career in private practice. In 1969 Pat joined the Federal Department of Agriculture as the district vet for the Kootenays and later for Vancouver Island. He helped countless animals and people over his career and those he served will remember his generosity, compassion, calm demeanor and reassuring manner. Pat was also a sailor. He loved the water; rivers, lakes, streams but best of all the ocean. Pat was most content when sailing his beloved Osprey around the Gulf Islands. Once on the water he taught his friends and family the most important things in life; how to whistle with your fingers, how to shuffle cards and how to tie knots, many knots. This was when the man of few words said the most and told his stories.

He is survived by his loving wife Connie of 64 years; his children Terry (Mike), Chris (Debi), Kate (Ron) and Cameron (Claudine); grandchildren Chelsea (Daniel), Geoff, Sarah and Spencer; and great-grandchildren Nathanial and Alexander. Those who knew Pat will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and a great friend. Pat respected the skills, creativity and integrity of all the people he encountered throughout his wonderful life. We will miss him forever. The family will host a Celebration of Pat’s Life from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday May 7, 2016 at Goward House, 2495 Arbutus Rd, Victoria, BC. Donations to the Saanich Marine Rescue Society or Royal Jubilee Hospital Foundation are welcome.

White-nose syndrome may harm B.C. bats On March 31, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that white-nose syndrome had been detected on a dead bat near Seattle, Wash. This is very worrisome for the health of bat populations in British Columbia. The BC Community Bat Program, in collaboration with B.C. government and Wildlife Conservation Society Canada, is developing a rapid response to this emerging crisis. “We knew this deadly fungus that kills bats was moving westward across North America, but we thought we had many years to prepare,” said Juliet Craig, co-ordinator of the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) and BC Community Bat Program. Currently there are no known treatments for white-nose syndrome that can be used to save bats in the wild. However, mitigating other threats to bat populations and preserving and restoring bat habitat may provide bat populations the resilience to rebound from the mortality that may be caused by the disease. This is where the KCBP and the general public can help. “Although white-nose syndrome affects bats in caves, it will be during springtime when bats return to building roosts that we have our best chance at detecting the presence of the disease, making the work of our community bat program more important than ever before,” said Craig. Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and the Habitat Stewardship Program, the KCBP conducts public outreach activities, responds to public reports of roosting bats in buildings, promotes the installation of bat houses, and co-ordinates a citizenscience bat monitoring program. “We are asking the public to report dead bats to the toll-free phone number or email below and to also provide information on bat roosts,” said Craig. “Bat carcasses will be submitted for testing of white-nose syndrome and may provide the earliest indication of the presence of the disease in B.C.” If you find a dead bat, be sure not to touch it with your bare hands. Collect it in a bag and label the bag with the date, location and your name, and then put the bag in the freezer. Contact the KCBP as soon as possible for shipping directions and further information. The KCBP also encourages residents to report bat roosting sites in building structures, such as attics, sheds and bat houses, to help identify CRESTON where certain species are present. If you need to evict bats from a structure, contact the KCBP, which can provide information on proper procedures to follow.HOSPITAL For more information, contact the Kootenay Community Bat Project at juliet@kootenaybats.com or 1-855-922-2287 ext. 14.

Opt clinic reducing contraceptive prices

OPTIONS FOR SEXUAL HEALTH

Options for Sexual Health (Opt), Canada’s largest non-profit provider of sexual health care services, has dropped the price of all birth control pills that it offers at its 58 clinics in British Columbia, including Creston’s, located at the Creston Valley Hospital. Providing accessible sexual health clinical services to B.C. residents, including cost-effective birth control options, is among Opt’s highest priorities. Opt will be adding a few contraceptive products that are generic equivalents. As of April 1 the price of all birth control pills that Opt carries was reduced. Generic drugs/medications are copies

of brand name medications that are manufactured after a patent has expired. Generic and brand name medications are subject to the exact same Health Canada regulatory standards. The active ingredients are the same and they work the same way in the body. “By adding generic products, Opt will be able to provide our patients with low cost birth control options and a broad variety of choices in order to serve the needs of our patients,” said B.C. professional practice leader Nicole Pasquino. “Having patients actively involved in making decisions about which options are best for them is an essential part of the services we provide.” “Opt is committed to providing clients

with the easiest access to the lowest cost birth control options possible,” said Opt clinic operations manager Helena Palmqvist said “Buying contraceptives on site in our clinics is the only option for many of our clients.” To achieve this price reduction, “we have been able to source equivalent generic contraceptive products that are more cost effective, and negotiated lower prices from some brand name suppliers. We are very happy that we can pass those savings on to our clients.” For clients/patients, the change means a savings of between $27 and $130 per year. Prices for most birth control pill products will drop from $15 to $13 per month.

“By making the cost of different contraceptive options more comparable, the patient’s and clinician’s shared decision about which contraceptive is best for the patient can be made without having to consider variable costs of different products,” said Opt medical director Dr. Marisa Collins. Opt will also be adding a 10-year copper intrauterine device (IUD) to their contraceptive formulary, and more Opt clinics may be able to offer IUD insertions thanks to the availability of sterile disposable equipment required for IUD insertions. Creston’s Opt clinic is open from 5-7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. For more information about Opt, calling 1-800-SEX-SENSE.
