Wildfire contained by Roosville Mainroad signs new KEY TO THE HIGHWAY
seven-year contract TRE VOR CR AWLEY
A new seven-year contract has been signed between Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting and the provincial government, announced Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett on Friday. The new contract, which provides for $16.7 million annually over the term, replaces an expiring contract between the same two entities that includes new standards and specifications and close to $500,000 in additional annual funding. “This new contract increases the amount spent
on maintenance by $490,000 a year so Mainroad will be able to meet the expectations of people in the region,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, in a press release. “With Mainroad continuing as the maintenance contractor for this area, there will be a smooth transition to the new contract and the comfort that an experienced contractor with employees who are knowledgeable about the local issues will continue to keep our highways safe.”
Jack Bennetto, District Manager for the Rocky Mountain District with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, noted that the the new contract contains higher standards and more stringent requirements. “We’ve heard you, the public, and because of that, we’ve changed the specifications, primarily in winter, and we’ve also added some money to the contract, almost half a million dollars per year,” Bennetto said, during the announcement.

A small wildfire that broke out last Wednesday was quickly contained within a day by B.C. wildfire crews as conditions start to dry up. The fire, a 22-hectare blaze seven kilometres east of Roosville near the Canada/U.S. border, was contained and mopped up by a crew of 18 personnel by Thursday after-
noon. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, however, it was in a remote area that didn’t threaten any structures or communities, according to Karlie Shaughnessy, a fire information officer with the Southeast Fire Centre. “The fire was reported [Wednesday] and when crews got out there, it was in the later
evening and when they returned early [Thursday], they managed to get a good handle on it,” Shaughnessy said. Wildfire season as already begun in other parts of the province, as the Prince George Fire Centre — northern B.C.— has responded to 45 new fires since April 18.

Kimberley Aquatic Centre down for two months Main water pipe breaks flooding mechanical room
C AROLYN GR ANT
A major mechanical break down has caused the Kimberley Aquatic Centre to close and it is estimated it will be at least eight weeks before it re-opens. “It’s really unfortunate,” said Mayor Don McCormick. “What
happened was that the bracing that supports the main six inch water pipe gave way and the pipe broke. The mechanical room is in the basement and it filled up with water. There was major damage to components.” The good news is the dam-
age will be covered by insurance. “That was the first thing we checked,” McCormick said. “It’s covered. “The major issue is the inconvenience of the facility being out of commission.”

This means more animals are nding forever homes. It is often rumoured that the SPCA euthanizes animals that are brought into our care. Nothing could be further than then the truth! We are in the business of saving animals! Our live release rates are much higher than most No Kill Shelters. The small percentages of animals that don’t make it are due to illness that can’t be treated or if the animal is deemed unadoptable due to aggressive behaviour.

10 Minutes to Disaster! With the temperatures already soaring please leave your pets at home when running errands around town. Dogs (and cats) cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. On warm and hot days the air and upholstery in your vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. The risk is real! If it is 26°C outside, inside a car, even with the windows cracked, the temperature can reach 37°C in 10 minutes and 43C in 20 minutes. If your dog’s temperature reaches 41C cell and organ damage begins to occur. Please leave your animals at home when running out to do errands. If you do spot a dog or any animal in a car on a hot day please call the BCSPCA hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or the local RCMP immediately. Members of the Filipino-Canadian Association of the East Kootenay and the Philippine Consulate in Vancouver — including Vice Consul Charmaine Guevara (centre, right) — take a moment together after a two-day outreach service at the Best Western Hotel in Cranbrook last week. Filipino Canadians from across Western Canada came to get important official documents updated.
Filipino consulate provides outreach from Cranbrook Barry Coulter
Filipino-Canadians from Cranbrook, the southern B.C. and even Western Canada arrived in town to take advantage of an outreach program by the Philippine consulate out a Vancouver. A team headed by Vice Consul Charmaine Guevara set up in the Best Western Hotel in Cranbrook to help process or renew or update passports, visas, medical certificates, authentication — any documents maintain dual citizenship and other official connection with the Philippines. Any legal documents that needed to be signed could be processed, said Davidson Javier, President of the Filipino-Canadian Assocation of the East Kootenay. “They sent us five of their members to do renewals of passports. They took some of their time to come and do that for the people of the area.” The Philippine consulate in Vancouver covers British Colum-
bia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories — but at the moment it’s reach is far greater. Davidson Javier, President of the Cranbrook Filipino Association, said many coming to get their documents updated were from the prairies as well — Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as from the Kootenays. But with the recent opening of a new Philippine consulate in Calgary will be able to handle the needs of prairie folk in the future. More than a 100 people a day came to take advantage of the outreach. The Filipino community is prominent in Cranbrook and the East Kootenay, a fact that Guevara mentioned in comments to the Townsman. “In the past two days I could see the Filipino community here is very cohesive, and teamwork runs in the blood for them,” she said. “That’s part of Filipino values which they have brought into the community in Cranbrook.” Guevara said the Filipino-Ca-
nadian Association in Cranbrook has been instrumental in making the outreach a success in southern B.C. “Providing this service for our Kabayan — our fellow countrymen, who’ve been stationed here by work or who’ve immigrated here — is really an important accomplishment for us. It’s not just a job, but it’s how we share the Filipino spirit with them as well. Guevarra said the bond between the two countries — Canada and the Philippines — is a strong one — not just culturally, but politically and economically. “Justin Trudeau’s first foreign trip as Prime Minister was to the APEC conference last November, and the Philippines was the host. “And I’d like to share as well that the British Columbia trade office will open within the year in the Philippines — the first office with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). So that bodes well for the Philippines, Canada and British Columbia.”

Mainroad signs new contract Continued from page 1 Five major points of Mainroad’s contractual operations moving ahead include: • Increased investment in larger, more efficient equipment (6 tridem axle, 18 tandem axle and 8 single axel plows, all with wing plows attached) supplemented with one tow plow with anti-icing capacity and one trailer sanding unit which creates a 14 per cent increase in winter material carrying capacity. • Having all plows equipped with AVLS (Automated Vehicle Locator System) which uses GPS to track the plow locations and ensure efficient deploy-
ment of the fleet. • Relocating the maintenance yards and having greater stockpiles of materials at those yards to save the local area better. • Increasing the use of liquid anti-icing chemicals by 250 per cent (currently, Mainroad uses one million litres, usage will increase to 3.5 million litres) by having liquid chemical production capability and storage at all five yards. • Having a ‘Snow Desk’ staffed 24 hours a day which will have the capability to deploy equipment anywhere in the service area as required that the public
PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE OF INTENTION TO CLOSE A PORTION OF ROAD AND SELL CITY LANDS The City of Kimberley hereby gives notice, pursuant to Section 40 and 94 of the Community Charter, of its intention to adopt Highway Closure and Dedication Removal Bylaw No. 2536, 2016 to permanently close to traffic that 371.3 m2 portion of lanes adjacent to 165 Bank Street shown as “CLOSED ROAD” in heavy outline on the map below, situated adjacent to 165 Banks Street (Lots 8 & 9, Block A, District Lot 1879, Kootenay District, Plan 1592) in Kimberley, and as shown on reference plan EPP60926 certified by R. can contact. “I’m satisfied as local MLA that Mainroad can and will do a good job,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “I think there have been issues the past where I have raised publicly and also directly with Mainroad and I think Mainroad has addressed those issues. “In combination with those issues and the commitment of the unionized workforce that works with them and the new contract that the Ministry of Transportation put in place and the new money, I think we’re in pretty good shape going into next winter.” Mainroad’s service area stretches from the Alberta/U.S. border and covers Highways 3, 93E and 95, stretching up north to Vermillion Crossing and west to just past Yahk. The highway inventory includes 3,600 lane kilometres of maintained roads, of which 570 lane kilometres are numbered highways. The area also includes 11 rest areas, 100 bridge structures, four tunnels and 40 retaining wall structures.

Mainroad’s highway inventory includes 3,600 lane kilometres of maintained roads, of which 570 lane kilometres are numbered highways. The area also includes 11 rest areas, 100 bridge structures, four tunnels and 40 retaining wall structures. Peter Ashcroft, Mainroad CEO, said the new contract builds on the experience the company has had working in the region and that he’s confident the bid will meet the new government standards. “We’ve heard the public as well and the minority that has complained, we have always looked inwardly and look in the mirror at how we are performing and we want to do a really good job in the region, so with these new
contract standards, we’re committing to provide that service that the Ministry expects,” Ashcroft said. While Bennett said he is confident that Mainroad will meet the new contract standards, he also said the public has a duty to drive responsibly on the highways if winter conditions are bad. “The people driving the vehicles on the highways, have by far and away, the greatest influence on whether
there are accidents or not,” Bennett said. “Where we live in the Rocky Mountains, we have weather that’s unpredictable, it changes, we have temperature changes that come with differences in elevations. We are never going to have roads guaranteed to be even safe at certain times of the year with the weather that we do have, so people still have to accept the responsibility to drive safely.”

Of the 45 new fires since April 18, 14 are estimated to be over 100 hectares in size. Though conditions aren’t as extreme in the Southeast Fire Centre, Shaughnessy warns that there are some hotspots. “Most of the Southeast Fire is currently at a moderate fire danger rating with a couple pockets at high [rating],” she said. “We are seeing some weather patterns that are very similar to what we normally experience in July. “We’ve had about nine fires
this season and they have burned 54 hectares and all of those nine fires except for one were person-caused.” In terms of fire activity at this point of the season, the five year average is five fires that have burned 13.5 hectares, meaning that this year has been higher than the normal average. Much of the current fire danger is coming from valley bottoms, as the snowpack on mountain peaks is guarding against any high-elevation fires. “We’ve had a fairly good snowpack this season, so we do
have snowpack still on the mountain peaks, so obviously that reduces the possibilities of fires starting at higher elevations, however, with the warmer, dryer conditions we’re experiencing right now, it’s elevating the risk in the valley bottoms,” Shaughnessy added. There are no burning restrictions in the Southeast Fire Centre, however, if any burn is larger than three metres in width and two metres in height, a burning registration number is required, which can be obtained by checking the BC Wildfire website.

very experienced and riding in a group that included seven other snowmobilers. The BC Coroner’s Service investigation has taken lead in this investigation as it appears no criminality was involved.

Local SAR, military wrap up training exercise
T r e vo r C r aw l e y
Local ground and air Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers wrapped up a training exercise last week that included military support on April 18-19. The training exercise, simulating the steps required to locate a small aircraft crash site, consisted of ground volunteers laying out a mock site with complete with victims requiring medical attention. The simulation started with the deployment of an Emergency
Locating Transmitter, which initiated the tasking of a local Provincial Emergency Preparedness (PEP) Air Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) aircraft to home in on the beacon, find it’s specific location and evaluate the crash site. Once the PEP CASARA aircraft found the location, the information was relayed to a CC-130 Hercules, which homed in on the area and dropped supplies and emergency personnel by parachute.
The volunteers on the ground acting as the victims were treated for their injuries by the military SARTechs and transported by ground to medical facilities. At the completion of the simulation, the Hercules aircraft landed at the Canadian Rockies International Airport to retrieve their SARTech crews and returned to Calgary. The same exercise was repeated the next day on April 19, however, the Hercules experienced some mechani-
cal issues and suspended it’s part halfway through the simulation. Prior to the mechanical issues, another PEP Air - CASARA aircraft had located the position of the ELT and evaluated the crash site before returning to base. Louise Shynuk, a volunteer with Cranbrook CASARA, said the exercise was very helpful for local ground and air SAR organizations to build co-operative resources that help locate lost individuals in the area more quickly and efficiently.

Burundi: The Next Genocide?
T
he good news is that the killing in Burundi has not yet grown into a civil war like the one that killed 300,000 people in 1993-2005, let alone a genocide like the one that killed 800,000 people in neighbouring Rwanda in 1994. The bad news is that Burundi is getting there. It’s hard to speak well of Sepp Blatter, the disgraced former head of Fifa, the international football federation. But Africa would owe him a large debt of gratitude if he had persuaded Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza not to seek a third term, and instead to accept a job as Fifa’s “ambassador for football” to the world. When the story came out recently in Blatter’s autobiography, the Swiss foreign ministry (which asked Blatter to make the offer) explained that “The intention was to contribute to a peaceful solution in order to prevent the current crisis in Burundi.” It might even have worked. Nkurunziza is a keen footballer, and he certainly has put aside enough money to retire on. But he chose to stay on and run for a third term, and started Burundi on the road back down to Hell. African presidents suffer from two besetting sins. One is the belief that they are irreplaceable: almost two-thirds of African countries had two-term presidential limits in their constitutions by 2000, but since then ten of them have seen attempts by their presidents to remove the limit. The most recent was Rwanda, where President Paul Kagame’s last permitted term will now end in 2034. But Pierre Nkurunziza’s excuse was particularly pathetic. He became president at the end of the civil war in 2005, when the peace was precarious. There was no time for a presidential election, so he was elect-
ed to the presidency by a parliamentary vote. On the basis of that, Nkurunziza began claiming last year that his first term shouldn’t count towards his constitutional two-term limit because he was chosen by parliament and not by the people. Even Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe (seven terms and counting) saw the humour in that. “They say the first term was not a real term,” he said at an African Union summit last June, “but you were there for five years!” Burundi’s Constitutional Court accepted Nkuruniza’s claim, however, as it would have been hazardous to the members’ health Gwynne to do otherwise. (One of the judges then fled the counDyer try, saying that they had all been bullied and threatened into giving that judgement.) The opposition parties all boycotted the election last July, so Nkurunziza “won” – and by then the level of violence was rising rapidly. The killing started after a failed military coup that tried to stop the sham election, and the reported death toll is now around 400. The known victims are mostly political activists and ordinary citizens murdered by the police in Bujumbura, the capital, but the real total of the killings must be far higher. Rural killings are rarely reported, but a quarter-million people have fled the country in the past year and now live in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. The one consolation in this dreadful situation until recently was that it wasn’t a tribal confrontation. In both Rwanda’s genocide and Burundi’s civil war the majority Hutus (85 percent of the population) were on one side and formerly dominant Tutsi minority on the other. Since the civil war, however, Burundi’s army has been
evenly divided between the two ethnic groups, and the opposition groups have also included both Hutus and Tutsis. The other besetting sin of African presidents, unfortunately, is that if they come from the biggest tribe (as they most often do), when they get into deep political trouble their default solution is to fall back on tribal loyalties. That is what Nkurunziza is doing now. The army is being purged of Tutsis, and the very same language used by the Hutus in the run-up to the Rwanda genocide is now being used by Nkurunziza’s Hutu backers in Burundi. Révérien Ndikuriyo, the president of the Burundian senate, has been referring to the regime’s opponents as “cockroaches” (the same word used for Tutsis by the Hutu extremists in Rwanda). He has even called on the government’s supporters to “start work” (“kora”), which was the code-word used in Rwanda for the launch of the 1994 genocide. Nkurunziza is trying to turn a political confrontation he might lose into an ethnic conflict that he could win, but the cost would be another genocide. The future of an entire country of ten million people is being put at risk by his personal ambition. The African Union offered to send 5,000 soldiers to help quell the violence, but backed down when Nkurunziza objected. There are 19,000 United Nations peacekeepers just across the border in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the political will to send them in is lacking. So far the opposition parties (which are, of course, mostly Hutu) are resisting Nkurunziza’s attempts to scapegoat the Tutsis, but in the world’s poorest country many ordinary Hutus will be tempted to go along with the regime’s lies in order to steal their Tutsi neighbours’ land. We may be weeks away from Africa’s next genocide. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

OPINION/EVENTS
If you go out in the woods today What’s Up?
S
pring has sprung, and urban humans have begun their annual assault on the natural environment. With a strong tourist season expected, it’s likely to be the Wild West out there. B.C.’s Conservation Officer Service has begun to provide regular updates on safety and enforcement issues through the camping, fishing and hunting season, to help with public education and wildlife preservation. Some of the incidents they have faced so far this year are troubling. Freshwater fishing licences had to be renewed as of April 1, and enforcement patrols are underway. In the Kamloops area, checks on 243 anglers resulted in 19 warnings and 17 charges, mostly for fishing without a licence, using too many lines or fishing in closed areas. That’s law and order compared to a recent boat patrol on Lake Cowichan. Conservation Officers found about 80 per cent of people were fishing illegally, either with barbed hooks, banned bait, no licence, multiple rods or some combination of these infractions. Speaking of boats, one of the tasks for B.C.’s 148 Conservation Officers is to prevent the spread of invasive zebra and quagga mussels to our many lakes. Native to the Black Sea,

Fraser River fishermen catch a white sturgeon, one of many regulated species of fish and game in B.C. these prolific mussels got established in Eastern North America via ship ballast tanks and have spread to the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. More than 400 boats and waterBC VIEWS craft entering B.C. from other Tom provinces and Fletcher countries have been checked at inspection stations. They came from Ontario, California, Florida, Missouri, New York, Arizona and North Carolina, with 24 considered high risk and three quarantined. Three boaters were charged for trying to refuse inspection. Other introduced species are a bit scarier than mussels. A
Burmese python was seized this month from an Abbotsford man, under recent legislation requiring permits for “controlled alien species.” There have been no further sightings of a cheetah that was photographed wandering along Highway 3 in the Kootenays last December. Officers recently got a call claiming a tiger was on the loose in Maple Ridge, but no evidence of an actual tiger has turned up. Bear conflicts are on the rise around B.C., says Chris Doyle, Deputy Chief of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service. There were 300 calls to the service about bears in the first three weeks of April, as they started emerging from hibernation and looking for food. Tourists are fascinated by
bear sightings, and the ever-present smart-phone cameras come out when bears eat new grass on the roadside. Doyle says the resulting “bear jams” on highways can be dangerous. There are still people who attempt to feed bears from their vehicles. This is not just illegal and dangerous to these unwary people, it conditions bears to associate vehicles and people with food, and to wander into traffic. The B.C. government is testing a new electronic system that can detect large animals approaching the road using thermal imaging and radar. It activates a flashing warning sign telling drivers to slow down. The Victoria Day long weekend marks the official start of camping season, and as the weather heats up there will be campfire bans that will need to be enforced. As with fishing and hunting regulations, there are people who decide the rules don’t apply to them. We hear a lot these days about the B.C. government’s effort to seize the proceeds of crime, such as gangster vehicles. This is a long-standing policy in enforcing the federal Fisheries Act and the B.C. Wildlife Act, where violators lose their gear as well as facing fines of up to $1,000. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.
Pascha/Easter: The Gregorian, the Julian FATHER ANDRE W APPLEGATE
M
ay 1 is Pascha/Easter in the Orthodox World – Why is it over a month after Western Easter? Our little Orthodox community of St. Aidan of Lindisfarne will be celebrating Pascha (Easter) this week on May 1. This will be my second Pascha since my wife Sonia and I became Cranbrookians just before Pascha last year on April 12, 2015. We love Cranbrook! Thank God (and Archbishop Irénée) for sending us here! Last year our Pascha was only one week later than the Western Church’s Easter. This made for a great deal on Easter candy for our Easter egg hunt! In 2014, the eastern and the western Church celebrated Pascha/Easter on the same day — April 20. It is always a great joy when we can all celebrate this great feast together on the same day, but this happens very rarely. Next year (2017) we will again be together, but then we will not observe the same date again until 2034. The feast of the resurrection (Pascha/ Easter) is known as the “feast of feasts” in the Orthodox world. It is one of the earliest Christian celebrations, and the date it should be celebrated has been an issue of debate from the earliest days. We have writings from very early Church fathers such as St. Irenaeus in the 2nd century quoting St. Polycarp (born 70 AD) regarding when the feast should properly be celebrated. The controversy was largely put to rest when 318 Bishops gathered at the 1st
Ecumenical council at Nicaea in 325 and formulated the Nicene Creed, outlining the nature of Christ (fully man and fully God) and the boundaries of the Christian faith. They also decided on the universal method of how the date of Pascha/Easter was to be determined. This formula was then followed by the Church and the date remained the same in the eastern and western parts of the Church even after they parted company around the 11 century. However, when Pope Gregory VIII in 1582 instituted the more accurate “Gregorian” calendar, the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Churches that existed, and later the many more that were formed in the west, adopted it for their Easter calculations, while the Eastern Orthodox Churches stayed with the original Julian calendar. This has resulted in varying dates for Pascha/Easter ever since. The formula is essentially the same; “the first Sunday after the first full moon, on or after the vernal equinox,” (the Orthodox also add “always after the Jewish Passover”), but the differences in the calendars and other factors too complicated to go into here, usually serve to give us different dates for the great celebration of the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I am asked about this almost as often as I am asked who I belong to, wearing the rather visible cassock with the large pectoral cross; and that’s about as short and simple an answer as I can come up with. Regarding the “who I belong to” ques-
tion; wearing a cassock is pretty much standard dress for priests in the Orthodox Church. This would include among the more than 250 million members: the Greeks, Ukrainians, Russians, Romanians, Serbians, Georgians, Bulgarians, Ethiopians, Egyptians, Syrians… Also included would be a whole pile of us garden variety North American born “converts” who just read too much Church history and discovered this rather large but unknown (in North America) Church that traced its existence in a visibly unbroken lineage, right back through every century to the 12 Apostles and Christ Himself! These would be the Orthodox types that mostly inhabit the little Orthodox Mission Church known as St. Aidan’s (a 7th century Celtic saint) here in Cranbrook. However, to explain more, even in very simplistic terms, would require at least another column. The best way to see who we are would be to simply come on over and see for yourself. Please, consider yourself invited! Check out one of our many services this week leading up to Pascha – see the schedule in this paper – or come on out to our great Agape Paschal Vespers this Sunday at 1 pm for some roast lamb, Easter egg hunting and great fellowship with our loving, joyous and welcoming community. Fr. Andrew Applegate is Rector at St. Aidan’s Orthodox Church at 201 7th Ave. S. in Cranbrook. He can be reached at 250-420-1582

PREPARE YOUR HOME TO PROTECT AGAINST WILDFIRE
Owners of homes and properties that are not conscious of the risk, not only pose a threat to their properties, but also threaten neighbours and emergency services personnel. The reality is that if you don’t take basic steps to minimize the wildfire risk around your home or property, emergency services will focus their response on properties they can save — the rest will have to fend for themselves.

Dynamiters veterans reflect on end of era Kimberley Dynamiters departing veterans reflect on successful run that helped restore strength to organization
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
There’s been no shortage of documentation when it comes to the changes surrounding the Kimberley Dynamiters this off-season. From head coach Jerry Bancks retiring to general manager Mike Reid stepping aside and taking over the Midget AA program in Cranbrook, the hockey operations department will see a serious overhaul before the next puck drops this fall. While the team enters a new era off the ice, there’s set to be serious changes in the dressing room and on the ice as well. Heading up the list of departing players are a pair of local products, as 20-year-old captain Jason Richter — a native of Cranbrook — heads for the University of Jamestown Jimmies ACHA Div. I hockey program and 20-year-old
forward Jared Marchi — a native of Kimberley — ages out after five full seasons with the club. “It’s obviously really sad,” Richter said. “It’s really tough to leave here, but I’m excited to move on and I know a lot of the other guys are excited to move on, too. “It’s been super special. I’m super thankful for being able to play here. As a 16-year-old, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen and when it turned out I had an opportunity to play here, I took full advantage of it right away. “There’s countless special moments for sure, but the biggest one has to be winning the KIJHL final last year. That was incredible with that group of guys. I still talk to every single one of them. I’ll be friends with those guys for the rest of my life.” Joining Richter south of the border in North Dakota is a host of
20-year-olds, including forward Eric Buckley, defenceman Justin Meier and goaltender Tyson Brouwer. “It’s sad seeing that I won’t put that jersey on again,” Brouwer said. “But how can you not be proud of what we achieved? I’ll remember these times for the rest of my life. It’s tough to bottle, but I can’t say enough about the group — we battled to the very end. “[Kimberley] is a second home, I can see myself living here after I’m done. I’ve met so many great people — billets, board members, fans. It’s a caring community. They care about you. It’s a great place to be, a great place to live. I’m born in Lethbridge but this is my home.” The trio aren’t the only ones headed for an American college as 20-year-old Keenan Haase takes his West Coast stylings to New England College (NCAA
Div. III) on the East Coast. Back north of the border, 21-year-old defenceman and Playoff MVP Jordan Busch has enrolled at Concordia University of Edmonton, set to join the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association hockey program. We’re not done yet. Pesky 19-year-old forward Brodie Buhler announced he was retiring from hockey at the conclusion of the post-season after he was knocked out of action with another serious knee injury. Rookie forward Korbyn Chabot, a 16-yearold native of Cranbrook, is a Tri-City Americans prospect, having been selected in the ninth round (182nd overall) at the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. He could very well follow in the footsteps of former Dynamiter Jordan Roy, 17, who just completed his rookie season in the WHL after

heller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 190 pounds, the hulking native of Taber, Alta., should have no trouble
making the jump to Junior A in the fall.

Ice Breaker LacrosseFest opens Cranbrook box lacrosse season Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kinsmen Arena was packed and rowdy all Sunday long as the Cranbrook Lacrosse Association hosted its season-opening Ice Breaker LacrosseFest. From tyke through midget, athletes of all ages took part in the box lacrosse festival at Kinsmen Arena, with teams from the Elk Valley and West Kootenay visiting to take part in a competitive day of action. “It was awesome, it was absolutely crazy,” said Kath Backshell-Jones, president of the Cranbrook Lacrosse Association, Monday afternoon. “The arena was full from 8:30 in the morning right through to 6:30 at night. I’ve never seen it so busy in there. “It was absolutely amazing to see the kids step back out on the floor. You could see by the looks on their faces they were desperate to do it. For those kids who had never played any games before, it was a real eye-opener and coaches certainly felt they learned a lot about

The Cranbrook Lacrosse Association hosted its season-opening festival Sunday. their new teams.” The day began with the fan-favourite tykes, who took to the floor and entertained friends, family and fans alike with a whole-hearted effort in a mixed-squad festival format. The Elk Valley/West Kootenay Midget team and Cranbrook Midget Outlaws helped round out the day in a fiercely contested tilt that saw glorious scoring opportunities at both ends of
the rink. Unfortunately for the home squad, the cross-region rivals made the most of their chances, scoring a 3-0 triumph. The final match of the day pitted the Cranbrook Bantam Outlaws against the West Kootenay Bantams, which saw the hosts claim victory by a 5-1 margin. “Everyone loves to watch the tykes play,” Backshell-Jones said. “Everyone had a smile on their face. There
were some amazing kids out there running hard and others that couldn’t quite make out what they were supposed to do next, but just having so much fun with it. “To watch the bantams and midgets play was pretty intense at times. Lots of cheering, lots of support from the clubs that came in. It was loud in there all day long.”

East Kootenay girls secure silver at Alberta volleyball provincials
Ice Breaker LacrosseFest a hit Continued from page 13 With Sunday’s festival marking the first organized games of the season for the many minor lacrosse players, there was a bulk of lessons learned by both rookies and returners. “Going to practice is one thing — learning basic stick skills is amazing,” Backshell-Jones said. “But when they actually get to put those [skills] into practice and
they’re up against other kids that have maybe played a little bit longer or maybe have a bit more experience, it was really interesting for them to see how much they need to work on their own skills but also to see how far they’ve come. “Even from novice age, those kids are extremely competitive.” Next up, the Cranbrook Lacrosse Associa-
tion is hosting a Field Lacrosse Festival this Saturday, April 30 (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), for box lacrosse athletes at Moir Centennial Park. Joining the Outlaws for the Saturday showdown will be visiting clubs from Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The Outlaws will follow up Saturday’s home field festival with a Sunday trip west for the Castlegar Kootenay Festival.

Kootenay Ice alumnus Jason Jaffray scores German League title with Red Bull Munich Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Former Kootenay Ice forward Jason Jaffray (1997-98 to 2001-02) is a German league champion after his Red Bull Munich (EHC Munchen) captured the Deutsch Eishockey Liga (DEL) crown with a
four-game sweep of Grizzlys Wolfsburg on Friday, April 22. Red Bull Munich completed the sweep with a 5-3 triumph in Game 4 Friday night, with centre Keith Aucoin striking for the gameand series-clinching tally 7:42 into the third period.
Jaffray, a 34-year-old native of Rimbey, Alta., was in his first campaign in Europe following an extended career in North America that featured 49 NHL regular season contests (4-7-11), 602 American Hockey League regular season tilts (193280-473) and 277 Western Hockey League reg-
ular season outings (107128-235). The veteran forward split his WHL career between the Ice and Swift
Current Broncos, spending 236 games in Cranbrook (84-102186). He was a member of the 2000 Ed Chynoweth Cup champion Ice squad. Jaffray struck for 21 goals and 39 points through 52 regular season games in his first tour with Red Bull Mu-
nich, adding two goals and 10 points in 14 playoff appearances. Red Bull Munich featured a number of North American-born players, including goaltender David Leggio (USA), Aucoin (USA), Jaffray, defencemen Jeremy Dehner (USA), Matthew Smaby (USA), Frederic
St-Denis (Canada), Richie Regehr (Canada) and right winger Jerome Samson (Canada). The club not only claimed the league’s playoff title, but rolled through the regular season as well, finishing atop the DEL with a record of 31-14-1-6 (94 points).
Kimberley Dynamiters veterans reflect upon departing Civic Centre one last time Continued from page 13 That makes for 10 players off the 23-man roster headed for new stomping grounds in the fall, with a number of others with potential to draw Junior A interest as the off-season wears on. Forward Sawyer Hunt saw an extended audition with the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign and could grab attention from Junior A clubs once again after a strong playoff performance saw him post 16 points in 19 games. Defenceman Tyler Van Steinburg elevated his play to another level during the post-season and at 18 could find his way into the Junior A ranks. Older brother Trevor Van Steinburg, 19, has a smooth stride and tireless work ethic, assets that likely put him on the radar of Junior A clubs in the region.
Both Franco Colapaolo and Graham Dugdale brought Junior A experience to Kimberley this past season and rookie goaltender Mitch Traichevich joined the Dynamiters after a long look with the AJHL Dragons. All of this amounts to widespread question marks when it comes to what bodies will fill Dynamiters sweaters come 2016-17. With all that considered, the 2016-17 season will truly mark a new era in Kimberley Dynamiters as some of the best and brightest players in the club’s Junior B history move on to the next chapter in their lives. Captain Richter departs as the franchise’s all-time leading goal scorer, with 104 tallies to his credit over 180 regular season games. The 5-foot-8 forward claimed the 2015 KIJHL scoring
championship with 39 goals and 70 points in 52 games, earning him recognition as Eddie Mountain Division MVP for 2014-15 . Marchi, the hometown kid, rides into the sunset as the all-time point-getter in franchise history, having collected 214 over a 228-game career. “It’s pretty neat what he’s accomplished, he’s a tremendous hockey player,” Bancks said of Marchi. “I’ve known him for a long time and he will be a success in life, he’s just got to sort out where he wants to go. “He’s the ultimate Kimberley kid. I’ve got a lot of respect for Jared and appreciate all the effort that he put into all his years with me in the school program. He’s a great role model. There’s a legacy in the school program that he was a big part of training as
hard as he does. “He can take credit for a lot of the hockey culture in Kimberley.” Buckley was productive during his tour, registering 181 points through 184 regular season games.
“It was a pretty good four years,” Buckley said. “It’s kind of become a second home for me up in Kimberley there. It’s definitely not the end for me in Kimberley in my life. “There was a total 180 [degree change] from my rookie year to my last year. It’s hard to say. Everything changed — the whole outlook on the season. We got swept my first year in
the first round and it was almost expected. Now, the expectation is to win and win all the time and every game. The winning mentality is there now [because of Bancks].” Buckley was recognized as the Most Popular Player as voted upon by the fans and was also honoured as the team’s leading scorer for 201516. Busch ranks as the most productive defenceman in franchise history, with 127 points to his credit over 146 regular season games. He was recognized for his efforts as Eddie Mountain Division Defenceman of the Year in consecutive seasons (201415 and 2015-16). “Jordan Busch found himself here, I believe,” Bancks said. “I think he had been kicked around a little bit by the world of hockey and when he ar-
rived here he was probably a little bit disappointed to not make Junior A. But he’s gifted. He’s a gifted defenceman and he sees the ice and makes subtle little plays. “He’s a gifted player and he learned to play with so much poise and confidence. He was clearly, in my opinion, the best defenceman in the league.” Brouwer is the winningest goaltender in franchise history, with 66 victories racked up in the win column. He was named Eddie Mountain Division Goaltender of the Year for 2015-16. “When I think of being a Kimberley Dynamiter, I think of Jason Richter, Jared Marchi, Jerry Bancks, that entire group,” Brouwer said. “That’s really what it’s about. You’re a team, but when I think back a couple years from now, when I think of the Kim-
berley Dynamiters, I’ll remember that group, everything we achieved, all the good times we had.” There’s absolutely no questioning the past two seasons have been two of the most remarkable and exciting in the Dynamiters’ KIJHL history. What comes next is nothing short of intriguing as the core group that brought the 2015 KIJHL championship, 2015 Cyclone Taylor Cup silver medal and 2016 KIJHL regular season crown to Kimberley departs for its next adventure. “I love all these guys,” Richter said. “There’s nothing like a bond between hockey players, especially junior hockey players. We get to do everything together and I’m definitely going to miss being able to come to the rink every day and hang out with these guys.”

Legion kicks in $10,000 for Endoscopy Clinic F o r t h e Tow n s m a n
The Royal Canadian Legion Cranbrook District Branch #24 continues to support EKFH and the regional healthcare needs of our community with a $10,000 donation towards the purchase of a colonoscope for the Endoscopy Clinic at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The generous donation came from the proceeds of the annual Poppy Fund Campaign. The Cranbrook gift is joining those from other Legions in the East
Kootenay Zone for a total contribution of $20,000 for the equipment. “It is wonderful to see how the Legions from the different communities in the East Kootenay region come together to support the purchase of a piece of equipment that will benefit healthcare services in the entire region” said Cassandra Schwarz, EKFH Executive Director. The Royal Canadian Legion #24 has been generously donating critical funds to health care
for over a decade. With this recent gift, East Kootenay Foundation for Health is proud to announce that RCL #24 and the Poppy Fund Campaign has had an impact of over $80,000 in gifts aiding veterans and their families in the East Kootenays. Without the generosity of the public who continue to support Poppy Fund Campaigns across the nation this support for veterans and the community would not be possible.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Reach out for others and be willing to do a reversal or change course if it feels more expedient. Express your caring by devoting time to a loved one at a distance. At times, you worry about this person. Recognize your innate limits as well as this person’s free will. Tonight: To the wee hours. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A loved one or a key associate can be, and frequently is, very difficult and demanding. This person attempts to warm up the waters between you in order to have a closer or more reciprocal bond. Don’t stand on ceremony; be willing to take steps forward. Tonight: Eye the big picture through a change of scenery. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could be at a point where you want to make an impression on someone, yet this person seems impervious. What he or she seems to be and what he or she notices might be two different stories. A meeting proves to be positive. You could be delighted and surprised by the support you receive. Tonight: All smiles.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Dive into a project and clear out some errands — just make sure you don’t sit on your duff right now. The more you get done, the more free time you will have. You will have extra hours, if not a whole day, for frivolous fun. Everyone needs a break. Tonight: Have a longoverdue chat with a roommate or family member. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might hear news from a distance that gives you an a-ha moment, allowing you to head in a more appropriate or fortunate direction. Your ability to read between the lines helps you make a decision about which way to go. Tonight: Play it easy. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A partner could do a reversal or something so out of his or her norm that you have to stop and think. Understand your limits within your immediate situation. A financial matter and decision might be necessary; however, be as friendly as possible. Tonight: Follow in the footsteps of a mischievous friend. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might need to defer to another
Tundra
person and get down to what is basic and necessary. You might be well advised to expect a certain reaction to your words, but on the contrary, you receive a bit of a jolt. You cannot put this person in a box. He or she is too eccentric on a deep level. Tonight: Make a special effort toward a loved one. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might feel as if you cannot get a financial matter loosened up. Pull back and consider a solution that might seem off the wall. Let others know what you are about to do, but express appreciation for their efforts and ideas. Tonight: To the gym! Or take a walk. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to approach a matter differently than you originally planned to, especially after a wild brainstorming session with a close friend. You see options that were not clear up until now. A child or young person lets you know how much he or she appreciates you. Tonight: Pay bills. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Know that you are about to turn the corner and feel much better. You
could have been tired, or perhaps you could have been in a funk. In any case, an unanticipated event energizes you. Show your affection to a child or roommate. Tonight: Go along with another person’s plans. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) A conversation you have could take some odd turns, such as the other party disconnecting out of the blue if you’re on the phone. Count on an odd response no matter what medium you use. You could be jolted. Remember, above all you consider this person a friend. Ride with the moment. Tonight: Catch up on another person’s day. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Take care of a personal matter, which could involve your feelings and/or a gift. You might feel better by making a caring gesture to the other party. Thaw the ice; you will feel much better. Understanding goes a long way. Touch base with a child or young person. Tonight: Indulge a loved one. STILL RUNNING OUT TO FETCH THE PAPER?
Baby Blues
By Kirkman and Scott
Dear Annie: My cubicle is separated by a low wall from “Terri,” the woman who works next to me. Here’s the problem: I might be talking with seven other people near me at different times and we could be whispering, but Terri manages to hear the conversation and always has an opinion to add. Every associate who works near Terri has an issue with her constant opinions, her butting into other people’s conversations, and the incessant talk about her failing marriage, her difficult kids and her finances. We don’t invite these personal conversations, especially because no matter what you say, you are wrong and she is right. Management has spoken to the rest of us, saying we shouldn’t talk about Terri when she isn’t present, because it creates negativity in the workplace. Yet they say nothing about her constant, disruptive yapping during an eight-hour shift. The sound of her voice stresses me out so much that it’s hard to maintain a professional manner around her, and I’m afraid that little negative remarks are slipping out. How can we make Terri mind her own affairs until she is invited into the conversation? How can we get her to do some work (and let us do ours) instead of blabbing all day about her personal problems? -- Ready to Tear My Hair Out Dear Ready: Let’s start with the obvious -- you don’t like Terri and you have been excluding her from your conversations. She responds by talking and butting in, so that she feels part of the workplace environment. You respond with annoyance. Imagine how you would react if you were frozen out of your co-workers’ conversations. Have you tried including her? Doing so now and then will make it easier to ask for some quiet time when you both need to finish your work. But if she still cannot stop talking, the next step is headphones and a smile. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Perplexed Grandmother,” who has been unable to establish a connection with her 3-year-old grandson because the family lives with the daughter-in-law’s parents and she has limited contact. Your advice was good, and I agree that she should talk to her son about taking a more active role in his child’s safety. I have another suggestion for Grandma to get closer. I have many friends who live far from their children and grandchildren and they have solved this problem with FaceTime or Skype. Over the phone or computer, they read books to the kids, have lunch “together” and simply enjoy regular conversations. This is what military families do, and it works just as well for everyone else who lives far away from their grandchildren. Please remember this as an option. You would be surprised how many of the older generation manage to make this high-tech connection. -- M. Dear M.: We have often mentioned how easy it is to keep in touch with far-flung family members through smartphones and laptops. We hope those who haven’t yet tried the technology will learn how. Dear Readers: Tomorrow (Wednesday) is Administrative Professionals Day. If you have assistants who make your job easier, please let them know they are appreciated.

Students blend art and fashion
Student artists from Mount Baker Secondary School showed off their designer creations of a different sort on Thursday evening at the Tamarack Centre. Using recyclable items, the students have spent the last month designing and creating their fashion pieces for models to strut down the catwalk as part of the annual Trash Fashion show. The event is both a creative outlet for the students to showcase their artistic passion as well as a way to mark Earth Day. All photos by Trevor Crawley

NOW AT NUTTERS – YOU’RE A SENIOR AT 60!!
Sounds of southern rock and blues echoed through Western Financial Place on Sunday evening as George Thorogood and the Destroyers rolled into Cranbrook as part of a cross-country tour. With a no-frills show of straight up rock ‘n roll and boogie-woogie, Thorogood reached back through decades of material with a set list of the pioneering tracks that made him famous, such as ‘One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer,’ ‘Move it On Over’ and of course, ‘Bad to the Bone,’ which closed out the show before a brief encore. Thorogood brought the heat with his Gibson Les Paul guitar, churning out each familiar rock and blues riff and slide with ease alongside bandmates Jeff Simon (drums), Bill Blough (bass), Jim Suhler (guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone). The Ben Miller Band warmed up the crowd as the opening act with a blend of rock, bluegrass and delta blues in a 40-minute set highlighted by a unique cover of ‘House of the Rising Sun.’ All photos by Trevor Crawley
