Baker musicians hit the heights at major festival BARRY COULTER

They may have been the smallest school represented at the province’s biggest music festival, but the musicians of Mount Baker Secondary School still stood out from the pack. And what a pack it was. The musical troupe of 71 players and five teachers got

back to Cranbrook early Monday morning from the Cantando Festival in Whistler, a four-day event featuring 45 concert bands, 30 concert choirs, 25 jazz bands, and the best professional music ajudicators on the continent — more than 4,000 musicians all told. Cantando Festivals, held

in Edmonton, Sun Peaks, B.C. and Whistler (the biggest one) are non-competitive festivals designed for North American school wind ensembles, concert bands, jazz bands, and choirs utilizing some basic tenets necessary to promote quality music education. Evan Bueckert, Music In-

structor at Mt. Baker, said the musicians dove into this milieu ready to perform at the highest levels. “Every group had to put on a half-hour warm-up — a huge show in front of a full house,” Bueckert told the Townsman. “All the ensembles are required to sit and listen to each other. We all

had to be an audience when we weren’t playing, and that was fun because we all had a full house to play to. Every group — after they performed a full half-hour set — got taken to a separate facility where one of the panel of five judges would meet us, and we’d get an hour- to an hour-and-a-half-

long clinic and workshop with this amazing person, who would take us apart and show all us the cool things we did and all the things we could do better. They gave us our mark at the end of the festival which was [Sunday] morning.

IN CERVISIA NOVELLUS: Saturday, April 30, was a bookish day, with a celebration of writers and independent bookstores in Cranbrook. Noted authors Jerry Auld (Canmore) and Angie Abdou (Fernie) were in attendence at Lotus Books for “Authors for Indies,” a day where writers help celebrate the country’s independent bookstores. Auld and Abdou spent the afternoon discussing their favourite books of the moment with members of the public. Later that evening, off to the HeidOut, for “En Cervisia Novellus” (“In Beer There Are Books”), where a reading and beer-tasting session were held featuring local writers, each paired with their own HeidOut brew. Searchers ‘go big, really quickly’ Continued from page 1

“With a little person under five, we go big really quickly. We called in as many teams and searchers as possible.” “The survival rate for a young child is quite high - 95 per cent if you find them within 24 hours,” Reid said. “But adding difficulty to that is that even two year olds can travel quite a distance. They found him at least three kilometres from the campsite.” The teams also searched all night, which they don’t always do. “We searched as much as we could although there were cliff faces and areas we couldn’t search in the dark,” said Heatherington. “You have to keep in mind a toddler will move.” Which is exactly what young Isaac did, once he ducked into the bush while walking with his family. “Our best guess is something distracted him,” Heatherington said. “He saw something shiny, he’s a two year old. “He just wandered through the bush. He was on a trail a little bit, then off a little bit, then back on the trail. He slept intermittently. “We don’t know the whole story. When he got back he told his parents he’d tell them the

Volunteers get ready to set out in search of two-year-old Isaac Leuenberger, missing since the evening before from Premier Lake Provincial Park campground. story later, because he was tired. “This little boy is well versed in the outdoors, his parents are well versed. They are an outdoors family.” Heatherington says that in addition to all the SAR teams from around the region, there were volunteer searchers from the campground as well. “Sometimes families will help with the search but typically we ask them to stay back because they are so sad and so emotional. We have a liaison to keep in constant touch with

them.” The search is a terrifying time for the family and very emotional for the searchers as well, even though they are well trained. “It’s hard to train for emotion,” Heatherington said. “But just two weeks ago we had a meeting and talked about the emotional toll. Search and Rescue is risky by definition. We deal with happy outcomes and also sad and emotional outcomes. We really watch our volunteers. It’s up and down. We recover people all the time and it’s

not always a good outcome. It’s really hard on the volunteers, especially in a small town. Because you know everyone. When you recover a victim, you either know them, or know someone who does.” But in this case, the best possible outcome occurred. Isaac is safely back with his family. “We just had a brand new class graduate Ground Search and Rescue and they were in on this search. It’s such a great outcome for them. They are raring to go again.”

MBSS musicians shine at Cantando festival Continued from page 1 Bueckert stressed that the festival is not competitive — the bands aren’t ranked against each other. “But they do give you a standard, where they think you fit in at a national level. If you get 95 per cent or above you get a gold standard. We got three golds, and our other band just missed it and got silver.” Organizers told Bueckert afterwards that only one other school at the entire festival got a higher mark than Mount Baker. As well, Baker’s vocal jazz group got the popular vote as the most exciting vocal jazz performance of the entire festival. “The fun part is is that we were also the smallest school there, from the

smallest community,” Bueckert said. “A lot of people thought we were the Seattle group at first.” “Some of the older guys on the panel thought we were way too loud for them,’” Bueckert joked. The music season isn’t over yet. This week is Wild Drama’s production of “Mary Poppins,” opening Thursday, May 5, at the Key City Theatre. Bueckert said the music program plans to do some concerts for the Parkland and Laurie Middle Schools, a concert for the Baker studentry featuring the repertoire performed at Cantando, the Grad Showcase concert set for June 1, and a big show for Relay for Life set for June 4. Farish — who barely survived the crash of a search and rescue plane near St. Mary’s Lake in 1983 — wrote about his long and unimaginably painful recovery in the book’s first edition published in 1985. College of the Rockies

Kimberley Campus is growing and thriving C AROLYN GR ANT

When someone mentions the College of the Rockies, do you think of the Kimberley campus or does your mind automatically skip some 30 kilometres down the road to Cranbrook? Doug Clovechok, who now manages the Kimberley COTR campus as well as the campus in Invermere, thinks that too often the answer is the latter. “There’s not a lot of awareness of the college’s presence in Kimberley and we’d like to change that,” Clovechok said. The Kimberley campus is located at the former Blarchmont School building. One of the first things that needs to be done, and will be done, Clovechok says, is better signage. “The College has just gone through a rebranding process and Kimberley will get a new sign.” But, signage aside, there is a lot going on at the Kimberley campus; many different options in online and continuing education, and what is perhaps the COTR flagship program in

Graduating class from the College of the Rockies Fire Training Program. Kimberley, the Fire Training Program. The programs is delivered in partnership with the City of Kimberley. The Fire Training Program has two components, the academic, which is taught out of the Kimberley Fire Hall. This part of the program trains firefighters, who graduate ready to join any fire department. It runs from September to the end of February yearly and is so successful that there are plans to expand it. The other part of contract training for municipalities across Canada and even worldwide. “It’s a valuable program to the city,” Clovechok said. “We want to grow the fire program.” And it appears that

will happen. There are currently 32 names on the waiting list for the next session. Perhaps one of the most appealing aspects for students is that instruction takes place in a working fire hall. Though the students don’t go out on calls, they do get to experience being in a fire hall setting, says program instructor Jack Paterson, himself a retired City of Kimberley firefighter. “That’s what sets us apart from other programs, and I think leads students to choose us,” Paterson said. “To have an opportunity to be around the fire department and see the activity when a call comes in — it makes quite a difference. It gives them a

Fraser school rankings are flawed, teachers’ union says Trevor Crawley

Earlier in April, the Fraser Institute released their annual rankings of elementary schools around the province, which was dominated at the top of the list by private schools in Metro Vancouver. As far as schools in the Southeast Kootenay District (SD5) go, St. Mary’s Catholic Independent School had the highest ranking at 222. Kootenay Orchards and Kootenay Christian Academy are next up at 297. After that, there’s a steep drop off Steeples Elementary School at 523, followed by other local schools including Gordon Terrace, T.M. Roberts, Pinewood, Highlands and Amy Woodlands. Shelley Balfour, the president of the Cranbrook and District Teachers’ Association, said that the rankings

are flawed because the Fraser Institute doesn’t take into account a number of factors when compiling the list, which is based off Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) testing. Those factors include classroom size and composition and consideration of socio-economic conditions of schools, Balfour continued. “Schools ranked at the bottom of the infamous list do not receive any further funding, support or care so I question the purpose of the ranking and the purpose of the media covering it as though it was news,” said Balfour. “Underfunding public education is news — certainly. Disparaging the staff, students and families of the schools does nothing to support public education - but of course, that isn’t the Fraser Institute’s con-

cern. The FSA is a test administered province-wide that is used by the government to provide a snapshot of how well students are learning foundation skills in reading comprehension, writing, and numeracy. Balfour says there is oftentimes pressure for students to write the test — even though it serves no academic purpose for student grades — because it could negatively affect a school’s ranking. “The lack of consistency across the province in how much time is spent preparing the students for the test or not, and who gets automatically exempted from the test does far more to skew the already skewed results,” Balfour said. “ Schools have real concerns to worry about — not where they rank in the Fraser Institute’s list.”

taste of what it will be like. It’s a real plus for the program.” The other big plus is that the Kimberley Fire Department has access to a building on the Teck fertilizer property on Jim Ogilvie Way that they use for fire simulation work. Students who graduate the Fire Training Program are certified to work at any fire department. Wendy Moore takes care of the compliance part of the program at the Kimberley campus. The program is in compliance with National Fire Protection Associa-

tion standards. “We are an accredited organization,” Clovechok said. “We are a Pro Board North American institution and we are proud of that.” The contract side works with individual fire departments who require training, which can be accessed online or by instructors sent out from COTR Kimberley. The program also sends out invigilators for exams. A lot of work is being done in the North West Territories through a contract through the territory government. “We are excited to see it evolve,” Moore

So is Bangladeshi society drifting into the chronic terrorism against minorities of all sorts that afflicts its former ruler, Pakistan? The answer, unfortunately, is probably yes – and the blame lies mainly with the two women who have polarised Bangladesh’s political life for so long. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is one of only two survivors of the family of Mujibur Rahman, the leader of Bangladesh’s independence struggle and its first prime minister. (He was massacred with all the rest of his family in a military coup in 1975.) The opposition leader, Khaleda Zia, is the widow of General Ziaur Rahman, who led a subsequent military coup and declared Islam to be the state religion, only to be killed in yet another coup in 1981. In theory, at least, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League represents the ideal of a secular Bangladesh that embraces its minorities, and Khaleda Zia’s BNP depends mainly on the support of conservative Sunni Muslims whose ideal society is explicitly Islamic. Such divisions exist in every Muslim society, but they are made far sharper by the mutual hatred of the two women who have utterly dominated Bangladesh’s politics for the past 25 years. The BNP’s alliance with Islamist parties pushes it ever closer to the religious extremists, and Sheikh Hasina’s pandering to conservative Islamic sentiment (in order not to lose devout Muslim voters to the BNP) is taking her party in the same direction. And Islamic State and al-Qaeda definitely are active in the country. Bangladesh is in deep trouble. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

OPINION/EVENTS Warming industry cries wolf, again

W

hen I was growing up in the Peace country in the 1970s, old-timers used to say spring and fall last 10 minutes up there. It happened again this spring, with a hot wind sweeping across the prairies to bring an abrupt end to winter. A rash of dry grass fires spread into at least one significant forest fire north of Fort St. John. Many B.C. residents don’t appreciate that the northeast corner is on the other side of the Rockies. It’s a different place economically, geologically and climatically. You see sudden chinooks in winter, like the one that confused actor and climate alarmist Leonardo DiCaprio in Alberta. You see snowfalls in August, dry spells, and temperatures plunging to –50. Premier Christy Clark happened to be in Fort St. John to speak at a rally calling for the federal government to approve liquefied natural gas export projects, soon after the fires broke out. She immediately claimed this as proof that forest fire seasons are starting earlier every year, a human-caused disaster that could be eased by selling gas to China to replace coal. Last year’s forest fire season started early, and the now-familiar claims were made that it would be the worst, the hottest, etc. It also ended early and was nowhere near the worst, a point mentioned

by nobody except me. This spring’s early warm spell up north petered out within days. Now the urban media can return to fretting about undetectable earthquakes in the region of the province with the lowest seismic risk, until fires spring up again. Forests Minister Steve Thomson and the B.C. Wildfire Service are more circumspect. There’s no way to predict rainfall this summer, and BC VIEWS thus no brave forecast Tom about “another” bad forest Fletcher fire season. Professional staff emphasize that these northeast fires don’t predict anything. We’re coming off an El Nino winter that has been punctuated by claims of ever-rising temperatures. This cyclical warm Pacific Ocean current swings next to La Nina, a cooling trend, but you won’t hear much about that. We’ve just seen Prime Minister Justin Trudeau join other national leaders, jetting to New York City to formally sign the meaningless greenhouse gas deal they agreed to in Paris last year. It compels them to keep on flying to meetings, and not much else. It defies parody. Yes, the climate is changing, as it always has. Yes, we’re in a period of gradual warming, although the rise is nowhere near what the UN’s climate models predict.

According to the environment ministry’s 2015 “Indicators of Climate Change” report, B.C.’s average temperature has increased about 1.5 degrees from 1900 to 2013, slightly more in the north and less in the south. That’s one one hundredth of a degree per year. The B.C. report ritually attributes this to human-generated carbon dioxide, the only factor the UN climate bureaucracy recognizes. And here lies a key problem for the global warming industry. More than 90 per cent of the greenhouse effect in the Earth’s atmosphere is from water vapour. Antarctic ice core analysis shows that over 400,000 years, increasing carbon dioxide has lagged centuries behind temperature increase. This suggests that rising temperatures lead to increased CO2, not the other way around. Conventional climate wisdom is that B.C. will see more total rainfall as temperatures warm. This is a matter of significance to BC Hydro, which recently released its latest power supply and demand forecast. I asked BC Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald at a recent briefing, what is the utility’s climate change factor in this forecast? There isn’t one. BOOKNOTES

Jack Matcha’s literary career change

It

was fifty years ago this week that television producer Sherwood Schwartz read in the Los Angeles Times that thirty percent of all marriages have one or more children from a previous marriage (today it is forty percent). This sparked the idea for a new television series, one about blended families. Schwartz shopped around a pilot episode he called ‘Mine & Yours,’ but the three networks (which is all that existed at the time) all passed on it, not being comfortable with producing a show about a divorced mother with children. ABC eventually bought it three years later, with the agreement that the mother’s previous marriage never be mentioned. They also changed the title from ‘Mine & Yours’ to ‘The Brady Bunch.’ What became part of American culture (the show’s theme song may be running through your head—I apologize if it is) only happened after the show’s cancellation in 1974, when syndication ensured the show its place in broadcast history. Back when it was being produced in its original run, ABC licensed the show for various merchandise opportunities. Remco produced a Kitty-Kary-All doll in 1969; King & Sealy offered a Brady Bunch lunch box in 1970; Topps offered Brady Bunch trading cards in 1971; and in 1972 Tiger Beat published three tie-in novels. All three —‘The Treasure of Mystery Island,’ ‘The New York Mystery,’ and ‘Adventures in the High Seas’—were written by

the same author: Jack Matcha. Which is incredible. Matcha had a varied career, but he is mostly known for, and spent most of his career writing soft porn novels. These were the “sleaze” books of the ‘50s and ‘60s, the ones with “XXX” or “Adult Reading” splashed across their pulp-like covers, from esteemed publishing houses of with names like Kozy, Venus, Bedtime Reader, After Hours, Adult Classics, Boudoir Books, Casanova, Nighty Nite, Rapture Books, and Pleasure Reader. Many of these were flyMike Selby by-night operations, with publishers often using fake names and addresses, authors using pseudonyms, and bookshops keeping the titles behind the desk or in cornered off back rooms. Their lurid cover art, racy titles and universally bad writing make them all appear hilariously bad from today’s standpoint. Authors of these books were known as the “treadmill” kind, ones who just churned out book after book for a one time fee. Matcha was one of the earliest authors to appear, with his first book, ‘The Love Seekers’ published by Kozy in 1961. He then continued to churn out dozens titles, including ‘Erotic Killer,’ ‘The Mortgaged Venus,’ and ‘The Killer Came Naked. In 1965 he ventured into non-fiction world, with ‘The Rogue’s Guide to Europe,’ published by Geis Associates. Here Matcha promises a guide “for the freelancing, freewheeling male interested primarily in

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

sexual vagabondage from Paris to Rome to the beaches of the Riviera and Spain.” Perhaps sensing there was more money to be made publishing, he teamed up with another sleaze writer Charles Frich to launch the publishing house of Frimac, which churned out more of the same adult paperbacks. Frimac Publishing tried to go “legitimate” during its existence by publishing a science fiction magazine called ‘Gamma.’ Although it featured excellent writing from top writers (Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, and Richard Matheson) it quickly folded after publishing only four issues. The magazine is best remembered today for introducing authors William F. Nolan to George Clayton Johnson to each other. The two would go on to write ‘Logan’s Run.’ Matcha continued to write and publish paperback sleaze right up until the ‘70s, where a shift in social norms killed of their appeal. This shift also made a television show about blended families more palatable to network executives. How a soft-porn writer was able to pivot from wayward housewives and sexual vagabonding to Alice making pork-chops and applesauce remains a mystery. Did Tiger Beat know of Matcha’s previous writing talents? Or did they hire him because of them? Perhaps they just need someone — anyone — to churn out a handful of tie-in novels. It is a puzzle perhaps only the Brady Kids could solve. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Province trims movie tax breaks Jeff Nagel Black Press

The B.C. government is trimming its film tax credits for foreign movie, TV and game makers after warning the annual costs for taxpayers to subsidize their work was threatening to grow exponentially to unjustifiable levels. The province’s payout to the industry through the tax credits was forecast to reach $491 million for 2015, up more than 50 per cent from an average of $313 million in the previous three years, and $182 million for 200711. The basic production services tax credit drops from 33 to 28 per cent and the digital animation or visual effects credit dips from 17.5 to 16 per cent. “We think we’ve arrived at a place that will ensure the industry itself continues to grow and enjoy the success that it has but also there is fairness for other sectors of the B.C. econo-

my,” Finance Minister Mike de Jong told reporters. He predicted there are still “extremely good days ahead” and said the changes were made after a two-month review and close consultations with the film industry. “They recognized that we were heading into territory that was unsustainable.” About 25,000 B.C. jobs depend on the film industry. Government subsidies refund between $33 and $71 out of every $100 spent by a film company on eligible labour – equivalent to an average of $25,000 for each B.C. worker in the sector. Because the credits are refundable, companies get them even if they pay little or no tax to government. De Jong’s move to rein in the tax credits was telegraphed in the February provincial budget, when the review was announced.

Ted Musson is walking across B.C. for the second time in protest of Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberal government. Musson stopped through Cranbrook last week after starting from the B.C./ Alberta border and will con-

tinue on down Highway 3 to the Lower Mainland, before heading over to Vancouver Island. Musson is travelling across the province in a motorhome, where he will drive a certain number of kilometres up the road, park his RV, hitchhike

back to where he started from, and begin walking. Musson, 73, began his walk a few weeks ago to protest Christy Clark’s treatment of education funding in honour of his sister, Paddy Musson, a long-time teacher in Ontario, as well as in memory of Duane

Trovato, a recently deceased long-time teacher from North Vancouver. No stranger to long walks, Musson has also previously walked to Ottawa in protest of Stephen Harper and the former conservative government.

BC WATER WEEK MAY 1-7, 2016

Many of us take for granted that when we turn on our taps, fresh water will appear. And that it will disappear when we flush our toilets, do our dishes, have a shower, or do our laundry. Most of us don’t think about the systems that prevent flooding in our homes and businesses when it rains. But our water doesn’t magically appear and disappear. We all depend on water systems to deliver clean water to our taps and collected and treat wastewater from our homes and businesses so that it can be safety returned to the environment. Wild baseball serves as spring training for many Bandits Wild stake out third place at home; Calgary Redbirds claim crown as high school baseball season nears conclusion

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

It was an all-Calgary showdown Sunday afternoon at Confederation Park in Cranbrook as Redbirds (Red) defeated Redbirds (Black) by an 11-3 margin to claim the fifth annual Mount Baker Wild Spring Baseball Classic. The host Wild finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, grounding Trail’s J.L. Crowe Hawks 14-5 to grab a third-place finish. “We hit the ball and scored a lot of runs in most of our games,” said Josh Lowden, who is in his fifth year as coach of Mount Baker’s high school baseball program. “There were a few errors here and there that cost us in one game. “I don’t think the boys played poorly by any means, [Calgary] just put the bat on the ball and were hitting gaps on us.” Kimberley’s Selkirk Storm whisked a fifth-

place finish from the Grand Forks Wolves with an 11-2 triumph to finish out the tournament. The spring high school baseball season serves as a great warm up for many local athletes ahead of the Mon-

tana State American Legion Baseball season, with many Wild and Storm players going on to kick up dust with the Cranbrook Bandits. “We treat [the high school season] as a type of spring training towards the Bandits program,” Lowden said. “The high school season is quite short. It spans about a month and a half. We get a lot of games in during that period, but my goal is to

get players ready and give them the baseball knowledge to succeed at the next level, whether that’s with the Bandits or further on than that. “In such a short season, to gear up for that summer league with the Bandits is how we treat it — as spring training.” The high school baseball season wraps up this coming weekend for both the Wild and Storm, with Mount Baker Secondary travelling to Medicine Hat and Selkirk Secondary visiting Grand Forks. “It would be great to finish on a high note,” Lowden said. “The boys need to make sure they’re playing smart baseball. They need to eliminate any mental mistakes that can be made. It’s a big-thinking game. They know they’re capable of playing with these teams. We’ll see some harder teams in Medicine Hat, but as long as they eliminate the mental mistakes and stick to the

Wheat Kings eliminate Rebels to advance to WHL championship Perry Bergson Brandon Sun

Nolan Patrick has led the Brandon Wheat Kings back to the Western Hockey League final. The 17-year-old winger from Winnipeg scored his second career hat trick and added two assists as the Wheat Kings beat the Red Deer Rebels 5-2 at Westman Place on Friday and won the Eastern Conference crown for the second year in a row. The Wheat Kings beat the Rebels, who will host the Memorial Cup next month, 4-1 in the bestof-seven conference final. The final begins at Westman Place next Friday against the Seattle Thunderbirds after the Western Conference champs eliminated the Kelowna Rockets 4-0. “It’s obviously nice to get those numbers but my linemates are unbelievable,” Patrick said. “Jayce (Hawryluk) made a great play on my second goal and John (Quenneville) made a great pass on my third goal so I pretty much put it into an empty net.”

Quenneville and Kale Clague also scored for Brandon. Red Deer received goals from Jake DeBrusk and Evan Polei. Brandon head coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon said he was happy for his team, which lost in 2014-15 league final to the Kelowna Rockets. “Our goal right from when we lost out last year was to get back,” McCrimmon said. “Hopefully we’ll be successful this time around.” Brandon dominated early — seven minutes in the shots were 9-3 for the Wheat Kings — but DeBrusk opened the scoring with a nice deflection of a shot from the point by defenceman Colton Bobyk after he held the puck in the zone. It was the fourth game in a row the Rebels opened the scoring, with the goal coming 7:16 in. Brandon tied the game three minutes later when Patrick fired a shot by Rebels starter Rylan Toth on a play created when linemate Jayce Hawryluk intercepted a

Rebels clearing attempt. Patrick appeared to score again two minutes later when a dump-in from outside the blue line bounced by Toth but the Wheat Kings were correctly ruled off-side. The Rebels regained the lead after a power play ended when confusion on a Wheat Kings line change led to a three-on-one, with Polei rolling a rebound up over Brandon starter Jordan Papirny’s shoulder and over the line 14:23 into the opening frame. Patrick scored his second early in the middle frame when he tipped in a pass by Hawryluk during a two-ontwo, and put his team ahead with his hat trick goal when he roofed the puck over a sprawling Toth on a nice pass by John Quenneville. It was the second hat trick of his career; the first came against Saskatoon in February. Three minutes later, Patrick returned the favour when he created a turnover while killing a penalty, skated up ice and passed to Quenne-

ville, who rifled a bullet over the shoulder of Toth to put his team up 4-2 with 47 seconds left in the middle frame. “Obviously it’s no secret what kind of player he is,” Quenneville said. “The night he had tonight was incredible. he took the game over all by himself. He was the man. Having a guy like that step up for you is what you need at playoff time and what a job he did.” Kale Clague iced the game in the third. “When you’re in the conference finals you need high levels from everybody,” said Jeff Truitt, Rebels associate coach. “It’s too deep in the season; if you don’t have maximum effectiveness from everybody you’re going to get beat. We didn’t do enough the little things to gain momentum to put us over the top to beat Brandon. They jump you and capitalize off the rush. You saw that here tonight.” The Wheat Kings host the Seattle Thunderbirds for Game 1 of the WHL championship, Friday, May 6.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The 2003 West Kootenay Wolf Pack spring hockey team lost to the host Kamloops Ice Pirates in semifinal action at the Kamloops Spring Invitational Pirate Hockey Challenge this past weekend. “The boys put in their best effort and most complete game against the eventual

champion Penticton Hornets in a 6-5 loss,” said Rick Meakes, head coach, in a team press release. “In the end, the game is about wins and losses but the most important thing for these 12- and 13-year-old kids is to learn the hitting hame and continue to develop in it.” Nelson’s Joe Davidson scored the equalizer

for the Wolf Pack late in the first period of his team’s semifinal defeat, deflecting a point shot from Raeden Rougeau of Grand Forks. Cranbrook native Andreas Pitre got in on the scoring with a secondary assist. A scoreless second period led into the final 20 minutes of regulation, where the Ice Pirates put the game away.

The Wolf Pack was one of three teams at the tournament to finish with a positive goalsfor/against differential, having scored more goals than it allowed. Fruitvale native Austin McKenzie registered a five-goal performance and was recognized with the Game Changer Award following a victory over Abbotsford’s

Lower Mainland Monarchs. The Wolf Pack is comprised exclusively of players born in the year 2003 and developed in East and West Kootenay minor hockey associations. Representing the East Kootenay on the squad are Pitre and Gavin Damstrom, both of Cranbrook.

Bancks & Utica Comets knocked out of AHL post-season

Kimberley native Carter Bancks (#34) and the Utica Comets have been eliminated from the AHL playoffs by the Albany Devils. Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Kimberley native Carter Bancks and the Utica Comets have been eliminated from the American Hockey League post-season following a 6-3 loss to the Albany Devils in Game 4

of the teams’ best-offive first-round series Thursday. “Anytime you lose, it’s not a lot of fun, it’s not a great feeling in that dressing room right now,” Bancks said in a post-game interview with uticacomets.com. “We battled through

some adversity this year. You’ve got to give [Albany] credit — they’re a good hockey team over there. “We fought hard and laid it all on the line, made our best push.” The Comets fell behind 4-0 before getting on the scoreboard late in

the second period, though the Devils responded to take a 5-1 advantage into the dressing room after 40 minutes. A third-period push saw the Comets claw back with two goals before a late empty-net tally clinched the series for Albany. “We pushed hard, we got some big goals from some guys,” Bancks said. “The energy in the building was buzzing and we had total belief that we could come back in that game. “No one quit. Everyone laid it on the line. We did everything we could to tie that hockey game and we came up short. It’s extremely disappointing, but that’s hockey. That’s the way it goes sometimes.” The 2015-16 campaign was a career best for the 26-year-old Bancks, who registered regular-season bests in goals (14), assists (25) and points (39), while being recognized with the Tom McVie Award as coach’s most valuable player as well as the

Utica Comets Man of the Year Award for his community initiatives. The Comets finished the regular season third in the AHL’s North Division with a record of 3826-8-4 a year after making a trip to the Calder Cup championship. “It’s definitely been a fun ride here,” Bancks said. “Obviously, last year we had a great run but came up short. This year we came up a little shorter. There are definitely positives you can take from it. We’re building an identity for ourselves as a team. I think teams expect a hard game from us every time we show up.” In 357 career AHL regular season games split between the Comets and Abbotsford Heat, Bancks has tacked up 35 goals, 70 assists and 105 points, adding one assist in 39 post-season contests. The Albany Devils advance to the AHL’s second round where they face the Toronto Marlies in the North Division final.

TORONTO - Six. Eight. Five. Thirteen. It was that sequence of four numbers, the 162nd of 200 randomly assigned combinations, that won the Toronto Maple Leafs the draft lottery on Saturday. Toronto, which finished 30th overall this season, had the best odds (20 per cent) of winning the lottery and will pick No. 1 overall for the first time in 31 years. Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan declined to say who the club was prepared to select with that pick, though he said the team had a pretty good idea already. American centre Auston Matthews is widely seen as the top available prospect. “I’ll just say that our scouts were very pleased with tonight’s results,” Shanahan said after the lottery’s conclusion. Matthews, if the Leafs choose him, would be a significant addition to a blossoming pool of young talent in Toronto, which includes William Nylander, Mitchell Marner and Morgan Rielly, among others. Matthews, a Scottsdale, Ariz., native, played this past season in Switzerland and scored 22 goals and 46 points in 36 games. The 18-year-old is also set to represent the United States at the upcoming world championship. He would presumably fill Toronto’s longterm No. 1 centre spot, plugged by less than ideal options following the departure of longtime team captain Mats Sundin. Shanahan described Matthews as someone used to a leading role, a centre with good size (six-foot-two, 194 pounds) who can score from the perimeter and from around the net. “He’s definitely somebody that has earned the right to be where he is today,” Shanahan said. Still, Toronto’s president made it known whomever the club chooses will be just one player among many. “I wouldn’t put too much pressure on any one player,” he said. “The more players you can get of a high calibre, obviously that’s a good thing. But we also recognize that at this stage whoev-

er’s coming in here is going to be a young person, a rookie, and not going to have the weight of the world thrust on their shoulders. “This is not going to be a saviour. That’s not the way the game is played these days. You need to have a full team.” The NHL performed three separate lotteries for the first-, second- and third-overall picks for the first time this year. The Winnipeg Jets proved the second big winner after Toronto, jumping four spots into No. 2 overall. Two other Canadian teams had their fortunes spoiled, meanwhile, with the Edmonton Oilers falling two spots into the No. 4 selection and the Vancouver Canucks tumbling into the fifth. “I have to admit, it was very nerve-wracking,” said Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. Finnish wingers Patrick Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi are expected to follow Matthews at the top, leaving one, potentially, in the hands of Winnipeg. The Leafs last picked first in 1985, selecting Wendel Clark from the Saskatoon Blades. Toronto has been rebuilding under Shanahan since mid-2014-15, seeking to become a consistent contender for the Stanley Cup, which the club hasn’t won since 1967. The Leafs shuffled out core players like Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf in exchange for future assets, including a second firstround pick in June. The Leafs hold 12 picks for the upcoming draft, some acquired at the trade deadline. A purged roster, which demonstrated obvious improvement nonetheless under head coach Mike Babcock, eventually tumbled to 30th place and the best odds at winning Saturday’s lottery. Shanahan, who learned the result on live television, described the result as “Welcome news for the city of Toronto and our fans.” “They needed some good news and while there’s still a lot of work to be done, this was some good news for them and they deserved it,” he said. “I hope they’re out in the streets of Toronto right now just feeling a little bit better.”

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your dream life might be a greater source of innovation than you realize. You often come up with great ideas while you’re asleep, so start keeping a dream notebook. You will have the energy to move any project off the back burner to completion. Tonight: In your element. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might find that you tend to be best in a group situation in the morning. You could come up with some unusual yet workable ideas. You are likely to become more reflective by the afternoon. Consider weighing the pros and cons of a decision. Tonight: Early to bed. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could be in the center of a lot of action, and might not be able to keep the lid on various projects. Use the afternoon to become more goal-oriented. Focus on what works for you. Stop spinning out in different directions. Tonight: Respond to

a friend’s request. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Try to keep the big picture in mind. You seem to have difficulty answering to someone you care about, because you still might be in the process of making up your mind about an important matter. You understand your limits. Tonight: Others will follow your lead. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You could be negotiating with someone to get him or her to agree to your terms, as you see a situation far differently from how he or she sees it. Be careful about how optimistic you are and/or how much money you toss in. Tonight: Put on a favorite piece of music. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Defer to others who want you to think that they know better than you. By letting them take the lead, you’ll give them a vote of confidence. As a result, they will get feedback regarding how good they are at carrying out ideas and working with others. Tonight: A quiet dinner. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Tundra

You could be quite busy completing certain details in the morning. Some of you might have appointments that take up your morning. In the afternoon, if you must work, schedule some meetings. You will love all the conversation. Tonight: Play it easy. Let others come to you. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Use your imagination when making a decision. You’ll come up with unusual ideas, and it might seem as though you have a muse on your shoulder. By the afternoon, you’ll want to get into work mode, as you have a lot to do. Tonight: Know when to call it a night. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to try something very different, but you could react to this opportunity with a bit of reticence. By the afternoon, you finally will decide that you have nothing to lose, and you’ll jump right in. You’ll enjoy the sense of letting go. Tonight: Express your spirited side. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) HHHHH Schedule an impromptu meeting. Someone might try

to persuade you to approach a matter differently. At least be willing to see this matter from a different perspective. You can weigh the pros and cons later in the afternoon. Tonight: Happy to head home. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Be aware of the financial implications involved with continuing as you have been. You might wonder how wise it really is to keep pushing yourself so hard. Remain upbeat and lively with others, especially in the afternoon. Tonight: Welcome a networking opportunity. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) It might be difficult to switch gears midday, but you will. Move forward with any important project in the morning. You could be tired of having to respond to others in the afternoon. Give yourself at least a selfish hour or two. You need it. Tonight: Do some shopping. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Tragedy has struck our family. A cousin killed himself on Easter Sunday. I never thought my cousin would do this. He worked with troubled teens and their families. He was outgoing and strong, and helped others through their own tough spots. A few years ago, his son died by suicide. Since that time, my cousin struggled with depression and a host of other things. Apparently, the pressure and depression overcame him that Sunday. Yet in his everyday life, he was surrounded by people who might have noticed the signs of what was happening had they known what to look for. Sometimes we get so caught up with our own issues that we forget to pay attention to what’s going on around us. We need to take time to see the needs of those we love and care for -- things that may lie beneath the surface. Please help your readers to recognize the signs of someone struggling, and to help that person before it’s too late. Suicide doesn’t solve the problem -- it only creates devastation for those left behind. -- One Left Behind Dear Behind: Not everyone who chooses suicide shows signs that others would pick up on. Chances are, your cousin never got over the suicide of his son, a horrible tragedy that undoubtedly contributed to this one, no matter what face he put on for everyone else. Here are some signs to watch for: Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself; looking for a way to kill oneself; talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live; talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain; talking about being a burden to others; increasing the use of alcohol or drugs; acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly; sleeping too little or too much; withdrawing or feeling isolated; showing rage or talking about seeking revenge; displaying extreme mood swings. If you or someone you know is in danger of suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Trained crisis workers are available 24/7. If you think someone is in immediate danger, do not leave that person alone. Call 911 and stay until help arrives. Dear Annie: I am responding to “Stuck in Upstate NY,” whose wife wants her Greek parents to move in with them. You know nothing about Greek culture if you think your suggestion to move them into a nearby retirement community has any chance of success. First, the wife’s parents probably don’t speak English, and second, the idea of having space of their own is nonsense. I experienced the same thing with my Greek husband and his mother many years ago. It doesn’t matter how small the house is. His wife’s parents will always come first. He needs to face up to the reality that his marriage is probably over. -- American Daughter-in-Law Dear DIL: It isn’t only Greek culture that puts the parents ahead of the spouse. But these same cultures strongly disapprove of divorce. Perhaps once the parents acclimate themselves to their new country, they will be more willing to move into separate quarters -- and preserve their daughter’s marriage. Evylin Marion Weichel (Alaric) June 1, 1933 – April 9, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother early Saturday morning, April 9, 2016. After a traumatic brain injury and prolonged battle with a cancer, she died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by loved ones. She is predeceased by two partners, Donald Weichel and John Hanke. She is survived by 6 children and their spouses: Cheriee Weichel and Randy Rotheisler, Rae and James King, Zoe Weichel and Bruce Hooles, James and Suzanne Weichel, Tim Weichel and Ted Nowicki; as well as 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and countless nephews, nieces and in-laws. Mom was born in New Westminster to Walter and Isabel Alaric, but spent most of her life in Oliver and always felt it was her home. Evy, as she was known by family and friends, was the youngest, and last surviving member of a family of 17. She was a devout Catholic who loved reading, chocolate, dancing, quilting, playing cards and dice, (especially bridge in her younger years) walks in the woods (provided the rattlers weren’t out) and spending time with family. In addition to caring for her children and husband, Evylin worked many years in SOGH as an LPN where she developed many lifelong friendships. A memorial mass will be held for her at Christ the King Catholic Church in Oliver on May 14, at 11:00 AM. Rather than sending flowers, Mom would have liked you to donate to your favourite cancer research or to the BC Brain Injury Association where you can request that your donation be directed to her brain injury support group in Vancouver, BC. Evy was a special person, who thrived in the “tough row she was given to hoe. Although she will be missed by all, we take comfort in the fact that she is reunited with her Donny, her John, and all her brothers, sisters, friends and family that have gone on before her. Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com

Joseph Malcolm James “Jim” Morrison June 17, 1939 – April 29, 2016 Jim passed away peacefully at home. He will be deeply missed by his children Colin (Laura), Janice, Susan (Vince) and Brian and grandchildren Malcolm, Robin, Christina and Salvatore. Jim will also be dearly missed by his sister Lillian (Terry) and brother Alex (Judy) and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Ruth (nee Eckford) and daughter Julie Ann, parents Malcolm and Mary, sisters Edna, Margaret, Jean, Mary and brother John. Jim was a son of the East Kootenays. He spent many years building homes, schools and arenas in Kimberley, Invermere and everywhere in between. He began his career as a journeyman carpenter with FabCo, then continued as an independent contractor. He later became Chief Building Inspector for the Regional District of the East Kootenays — a position he held for 28 years. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and driving through the Kootenays in search of huckleberries. He also loved golfing, bridge and growing tomatoes in his greenhouse. All are welcome to attend a Celebration of Jim’s Life at McPherson Funeral Home, 1885 - Warren Avenue, Kimberley, BC on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kimberley Special Care Home, 386 – 2nd Avenue, Kimberley, BC, VIA 2Z8 will be deeply appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com Courtesy Carolyne Zimich

Kootenay Orchards’ Grade Three students spent an exciting day at the farm thanks to the Wild Voices program. The children visited the Thibeault Ranch, a working cattle ranch near Idlewild Park. Activities included watching border collies herd sheep, playing on a hay bale “parkour” course and helping to feed the cattle. The chickens were a big hit, too!

he marketing tag line for India is ‘Incredible India’ and that is a perfect description. I recently visited India for the first time and it was an incredible experience! After a quick stopover in New Delhi, we travelled to Varanasi and the holy Ganges River. Also known as Kashi (meaning ‘light’) or Benarus, the City of Lights or City of Enlightenment is the oldest city in the world, according to Indian history, over 7,000 years old. Three million live in the city, six million in the area which spreads over seven kilometres along the Ganga-ji, or holy river. This is the ‘real’ India and represents the spiritual, religious and cultural aspects of Hindu Indian life. Loaded with history, ritual and mythology. In the morning, at sunrise, pilgrims (and tourists) head to the ghats (stairs to the water)

for holy bathing, yoga, chanting, and praying. As a Hindu, if you bathe in the holy waters and are cremated here with your ashes scattered in the river, you will achieve nirvana (mukti or moksha) and go directly to heaven when you die. At sunrise, the cremations begin. As we travelled by boat up and down also the shoreline, we witnessed many funeral pyres. Manikarnika Ghat is the main cremation ghat, the most sacred site of liberation and salvation in India. Bodies are brought by male members of the family on a wooden stretcher to the cremation sites along the riverbanks, wrapped in ornate cloth. The body is taken into the water, submerged, given a final drink of holy water, chanting and prayers occur, and then the body is taken to the fire. The colourful cloth is removed, leaving only a

simple white cloth over the naked unadorned body, then it is placed on the fire. Three hours is required to complete the cremation. At that time, the family returns to the site to collect a small amount of ash, and take to the river to complete the ritual. Workers at the cremation site then sift through the rest of the ashes, collecting any valuables, and dispose of the rest of the ashes in the river. There are over 1,000 cremations performed each day between sunrise and sunset. As you can imagine, the merchants who sell the wood have a very good business going on. Near sunset, we again boarded our boats for another cruise by the cremation sites. As it was getting darker, you look up and see the twinkling stars. You look down into the water and see the floating offerings — little boats made of

leaves, marigold flowers and a burning candle – twinkling lights on the rippling waters. It’s an image that stays with you. Ganga ‘Aarti’ is a powerful and uplifting spiritual ritual that is performed every night after the sun has set. Holy men and devotees play music, ring bells, and perform the Worship to Fire dedication to Lord Shiva, River Ganga, Surya (sun) and Agni (fire), on behalf of the whole universe. There are flames and coloured light wheels, and thousands of people, on the river and on land. It is noisy, organized chaos, and it happens 365 days a year!
