About 1,000 were set free in the Kootenay River at the public event, and schoolchildren released about 500 in the morning near Sutcliffe Farms, helping to repopulate the endangered species. Out of every 1,000 released, 280 will survive two years, 220 will survive five and 190 will survive eight. After 12 years, about 180 will still be alive.

If town councillors were tempted not to declare a Clean Air, Water and Soil Day, a presentation by Canyon-Lister Elementary School Be the Change students at the April 26 regular meeting quickly changed their minds. About 20 students, along with teachers and parents, packed council chambers. The students made a verbal presentation (on page 5) to back their request, showed posters promoting environmental responsibility and then sang the Blue Dot song. “We tried to help the environment just by making little changes,” the students said in the presentation. “For example, in one month we saved about 1,500 litres of water just by using one cup of water each time we brushed our teeth instead of the Canadian average of eight litres of water per day just to brush their teeth.” They joined the David Suzuki Foundation’s Blue Dot movement about two months ago. “It is an organization that believes that every person has the right to have clean air, water and safe food,” they said. “It is a movement that is growing across the country with 95,403 participants and counting.” After the presentation, Mayor Ron Toyota thanked the delegation and declared a two-minute recess, inviting visitors to leave or stay at their pleasure. “And just so you know, council will be declaring June 7 Clean Air, Water and Soil Day,” he added, getting a roomful of smiles and thank yous.

and recovery time. Reducing the stigma toward mental health illness starts by exposing the myths through delivery of correct education and service access information. The Canadian Mental Health Association provides the following statistics on the mental health of children and youth in B.C.: Approximately one in seven young people in B.C. will experience some sort of mental illness at some point, and between 50-70 per cent of mental illness first shows up before age 18. Mental illness can affect how well a child does in school, in sports and other activities, the quality and sustainability of friendships, and positive connection between family members. This can in turn affect a child or youth’s sense of ability to develop into an independent adult with the capacity to function fully in life. The more common mental health issues affecting young people are: anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention and disruptive disorders, dependency/addictions, psychosis, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, suicide and suicidal thoughts. Suicide and ongoing thoughts of suicide may accompany mental illness. A recent B.C. survey found that approximately five per cent of youth had attempted suicide while 12 per cent seriously thought about it — and for those who are inclined to believe that talk of suicide in youth is just a call for attention, suicide remains the second leading cause of death among 15-24-year-olds in B.C. Fortunately, through increased awareness of the issues, such as the contributing factors, and access to Creston New Horizons Seniors Society invites you to a a p p r o a c h e s

the points mentioned here are specific to this demographic. The outcomes of a recent national survey on attitudes toward mental health indicate that there is still widespread misunderstanding about what mental health is and what mental illness is, so let’s start with a definition derived from the World Health Organization and the Canadian Mental Health Association: Mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. Mental illness is a recognized, medically diagnosable illness that results in the significant impairment of an individual’s cognitive, affective or relational abilities. Mental disorders result from biological, developmental, and/or psychosocial factors, and can be managed through specific treatment approaches. Despite an increase in focus on the importance of mental health, there remains a stigma toward those who experience mental illness, which prevents many people from feeling they can talk about it openly and find the help they need. This can result in symptoms that start as mild (often dismissed as irrelevant), moving to moderate and then severe before people get practical help. Knowledge about maintenance of mental health and emotional wellness plays an important role in reducing the development of mental illness as well as reducing treatment

to prevention and intervention, we can address the pain, and ease the distress of sufferers and their families. Education and awareness are also about identifying and celebrating the ways in which children, youth, adults and seniors are maintaining, and can continue to maintain, positive mental and emotional wellbeing. Many questions may come up, and often the focus is on whether or not one has a family member struggling and how to get help. Fortunately, there is quick access to a wide range of information on mental health matters via the Internet. The following sites are an excellent first stops for helpful information on mental health for children youth and families: the Canadian Mental Health Association of BC (www.cmha.bc.ca), BC Mental Health and Addictions (www. bcmhsus.ca) and Kelty Mental Health (keltymentalhealth. ca). Don’t forget the local library as a possible resource for information on mental health both online and in printed form. For those who do not frequent the digital highway and want information about local and regional mental health services for children and youth, the local action team for the BC Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative has developed a community resource guide that can be obtained by contacting Valley Community Services at 250428-5547 or East Kootenay Addictions Services at 250428-3036. Museum season includes new exhibits, bus tours Its season may last less than five months, but the Creston Museum is always ready to pack in as many events as possible — allowing visitors plenty of opportunities to learn about the Creston Valley and its history. The season officially starts Saturday, and will be open seven days a week starting June 11. The first full week of June is Locals’ Week, featuring extended hours and special admission rates just for Creston Valley residents, wrapping up with Kids’ Day on June 11, when families can enjoy a wide range of activities from the past. In previous years, the day’s events have included “gold” panning, tug of war and fruit packing. From June 18-July 9, visitors can check out “Retro Girls”, “a special exhibit by four local artists, taking retro and vintage clothing with old objects gleaned from second hand stores, and combining them in new and unexpected ways,”

said museum manager Tammy Hardwick. “The exhibit will be dispersed throughout the museum’s exhibit galleries, so visitors will come across the unexpected… unexpectedly.” Returning this summer are the popular “Pioneer Lessons”, which explore how the Creston Valley’s pioneers lived, Tuesdays and Saturdays in July and August (except Aug. 13). Visitors can find out how they made their homes, grew their food, did their chores and learned their school lessons. “It’s totally hands-on, sometimes messy and always fun,” said Hardwick. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the heritage and orchard bus tours will return, with a variety of routes and stops to explore the valley’s history, as well as food, agriculture and the arts. “Orchards will only be the start of it — we’ll be visiting greenhouses, gardens, galleries and grain elevators, with some delicious food samples and maybe even a pig roast along

the way,” said Hardwick. The annual tea, a perennial favourite, will be held Aug. 13, with the theme “Hard Times” and a menu that reflects the hobo lifestyle. Guests are encouraged to attend in their best hobo attire, with prizes for the best costumes. Special guests from Creston’s past will also be on hand to tell what life was like in the Dirty Thirties. A special exhibit, “Born to the Soil”, already opened April 30 (in conjunction with the museum’s annual general meeting) and runs through the summer, highlighting the efforts of European settlers forging a new life in the valley. “Some had farming experience in their old countries; many did not,” said Hardwick. “Either way, once they arrived in the Creston Valley these industrious, stalwart people discovered a love of the land and became integral members of their new communities.” To learn more, contact the museum at 250-428-9262 or visit www.crestonmuseum.ca.

CLES students’ council presentation

Canyon-Lister Elementary School Be the Change students Merrilyn Palmer, Abbey Prier, Melody Palmer, Willow Marean and Annika Johnson made the following presentation to Creston town council at the April 26 meeting: We are here today to introduce you to the Be the Change group from the Canyon-Lister Elementary School. We are a group of approximately 20 students and we volunteer our time to make the world a better place. We believe that we are a small group that can make a big difference. During the past few years, we have been involved in raising money to build a water well in Asia and a school in India. We have picked up garbage at Duck Lake and we recycled batteries to provide zinc to children living in developing countries that suffer from zinc deficiencies. Did you know that the zinc recovered from one AA battery saves six children’s lives? Last year we collected 954 batteries to save approximately 5,400 children’s lives. We will do the same this year! This year we are focusing on sustainability. We tried to help the environment just by making little changes. For example, in one month we saved about 1,500 litres of water just by using one cup of water each time we brushed our teeth instead of the Canadian average of eight litres of ($786), Kootenay Council of Seniors ($536), Kootenay Regional Association for Community Living ($4,847), Lister Community Association ($1,893), Northern BC Friends of Children ($1,429), Quilts 4

water per day just to brush their teeth! Some of us brought garbage-less lunches to school. Some of us recycled electronics and we all picked up garbage. Right now we are fundraising to buy an education kit for a student in a developing country, and we are going to buy goats and chickens to help someone feed their family and have a business selling eggs and milk. Two months ago we joined the Blue Dot movement. Blue Dot is connected to the David Suzuki Foundation, which is all about educating people about how important our environment is. It is an organization that believes that every person has the right to have clean air, water and safe food. It is a movement that is growing across the country with 95,403 participants and counting. Around the world, 110 nations recognize the right to live in a healthy environment. In 2012, Canada officially recognized our human right to water at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. The only way we will preserve our water, air and food for future generations is for everyone to be a part of the solution — starting now. We need to take responsibility for our actions and do our best to prevent any more pollution. We need to educate people. Did you know that in the United States alone, there are enough bat-

Plastic in the ocean breaks down into such small segments that pieces of plastic from a one litre bottle could end up on every mile of beach throughout the world. We need to think differently about our environment. Just a few weeks ago, 90 per cent of businesses in Tofino, B.C., signed a petition to get rid of plastic straws — they call it the Straws Suck petition! We believe that the food we eat should be free of pesticides. We believe that when we go outside, we shouldn’t have to choke on smoke in the air because someone is burning things that should be recycled or put in the compost. In 2015, Health Canada said there were 131 drinking water advisories in Canada. We believe that if you turn on your tap, you shouldn’t have to worry about it making you sick. We love Creston and we call it home. We want it to be a healthy place to grow up, now and for future generations. We believe the Town of Creston can be brave and tell its citizens that they believe the environment is important; that we are all important. Today is the day we decide!

The joy of living

Early summer-like weather is upon us and the Creston Valley is looking particularly beautiful these days. Blossoming trees, spring flowers and the drone of lawnmowers make it seem more like late Mays in years past, and even the traditional spring bloom of for sale signs on what seems like half of the homes in Creston doesn’t seem as depressing as it often does. With businesses under renovation on Canyon Street and the sale of an unoccupied building across the street from the Advance office (anticipate a “food-related business,” says the new owner) the optimism in the downtown core continues. And doesn’t the image of Stewart Steinhauer’s Spirit Bear amidst the commemorative planting of tulips at the Pine Street intersection make one feel like all is right with the world? I am especially pleased to see the introduction of sculptures at Creston Valley Bakery and Creston Valley Realty and look forward to seeing the Thirty Birds aluminum sculpture’s installation in the coming days. Like many I have spoken with, I was disappointed by the recent letter to the editor declaring the project an insult to local artists and an offense to local cultural sensibilities. To set the record straight, before the Pine Street location was considered for Thirty Birds, Steinhauer was consulted about the possible moving of the Spirit Bear to another corner of the intersection and he had no objections. In the end, though, a different spot was chosen for Thirty Birds and the bear remains in situ. Art, for me at least, is a way to break down barriers and borders, not to build them up, and

SculptureWalk is a wonderful way to do just that. While the letter writer takes offense at non-local sculptures, I haven’t heard a word of objection from local artists, some of whom are on the committee that

Lorne Eckersley selected the pieces and their locations. Others have expressed interest in creating larger pieces that could become part of future SculptureWalk displays. This week I attended the opening night of Focus on Youth art displays in the community complex’s Creston Room and couldn’t help but think back over the 30 years that this remarkable week of arts and culture has been brightening our community. I loved the idea of showing works by former students and teachers who have inspired with their own creative spirit. So much work has gone into this annual event, and it is provides a marvelous showcase for students. I look forward to taking in some performances at the Prince Charles Theatre, and I am filled with admiration for the volunteers who have kept Focus on Youth going for three decades. Speaking of artists, I owe a huge public apology. In a recent column about the artists challenge show at the former Kootenay Hotel, I somehow failed to mention a performance that I found profoundly moving and coura-

geous. That it was created and performed by my friend Brandy Hunt (whom I refer to as my honorary niece) makes the omission all the more embarrassing. Brandy’s piece, Who’s That Girl, used a call and response format and it brought tears to my eyes. It served as a reminder that tragedy and sadness are part of our human experience, adding in their own way to the richness and meaning of our lives. These are busy days for the many volunteers in our community. The Creston Valley Blossom Festival committee has been hard at work to organize the 75th anniversary, which will include the return of more than a dozen former queens, and serve as a reminder of the festival’s storied past. And plans are already underway for the Creston Valley Fall Fair, which seems on the cusp of a revitalization, with a number of new volunteers stepping up to help out. The fall fair is nearing its own landmark 100th anniversary, and one can only wish organizers success in keeping the event going and growing. With so much interest in our agricultural community these days, one hopes we don’t lose track of our history of growing and producing food. Another group that should be acknowledged is Trails for Creston Valley, volunteers who are working to encourage the use of our existing trails and creation of new ones. We have made it a priority to get out onto local trails regularly, and it is a joy to explore the natural beauty of the Creston Valley. This is a fine place to call home. Hard work, dedication of CWMA staff paying off To the Editor: I would like to thank the employees of Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area staff for their hard work and dedication in managing the wildlife area. I really appreciate the brushing that has been done along the dikes at Duck Lake. I think it is a real improvement and will make the road much more enjoyable for people to use. I’m no expert about bird or wildlife habitat. The other day I was on the dike and I saw more birds of different types than I have seen anywhere else at any other time. Keep up the good work. Curtis Stankevich Wynndel

Tabletree needed local support To the Editor: Check out the March 30 Kalispell Flathead Beacon. There is an article about former Erickson farmers Gary and Susan Snow and their Tabletree juice business. From what I understand, they couldn’t get enough support from Creston to start up their business here. My question is, who was responsible for this? We have lost this business to the states, so what do we do with our culled cherries? We have lost 10-15 jobs, plus all the infrastructure that goes with setting up a business here. Steven Cochrane Wynndel

Awareness doesn’t help women in terror

To the Editor: How is the article “Week Raises Awareness of Violence Against Women” (April 21) helping those that are in terror of their ex-spouses? My sister has made numerous complaints, hoping the Creston RCMP will stop this narcissistic, brutally violent man from harassing her. He has beaten her for 11 years in their marriage. He has a record of guns, violence and drugs. Now he’s intimidating, stalking and defacing government property with terrible sexual messages on the mailboxes where she picks up her mail. She has called the RCMP, who were to send the report to the Crown who were supposed to get a restraining order on him. They’ve done nothing. Do we sue when she’s dead? What is the alternative? Balancing engagement, governance a challenge

Where does time go? It is hard to believe that we are well into our second year as a council and nothing has slowed down — especially time. Fitting our council commitments into our personal lives can sometimes be a challenge.

Council Comment Karen Unruh Meetings are part of my job, working for you. The Creston Valley has many organizations and committees with active volunteers, and I am proud to serve in the community with them. These people work relentlessly and often go unrecognized. I was pleased to read about 13 of our community members who received the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award in March and two who received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in April. There are many more volunteers that awards could be given to and I hope you enjoyed Volunteer Appreciation Week in April. I had the privilege of being invited to and attending the firefighters’ awards banquet. They are a group of individuals who put others before themselves throughout the year — when the pager goes, their focus changes immediately. Balancing community engagement with our responsibility to govern can be a challenge especially in a small community with diverging interests. We need to ensure that we have a balance between meaningful community engagement and good governance by moving forward with consultation and public meetings. Governing bodies may hesitate to make contentious decisions for fear of losing popularity. Being sensitive to public scrutiny may make us overly responsive to criticism. If anxiety of disappointing others takes precedent over implementing a longterm vision, a council may become

hesitant to make a hard decision and become immobilized. We need to be able to take legitimate community needs and concerns into account before decisions are finalized, without being held hostage by dissenting voices. We have projects in our strategic priorities that need your input. Your phone calls and letters are welcome, but we also need you to come out and take part in public consultation and information processes. Budget discussions are not easy and setting our budget and priorities come from what we hear from you, as well as operational needs. This year, our first priority is the Official Community Plan (OCP). We are excited to be working with Kootenay Employment Services (KES) for public engagement and Alison Mewett and William Marsh as independent contractors for the policy development and document production, as well as 12 community members from various organizations. Coun. Jim Elford and I are the council representatives. We hope to see you at the public consultations and meetings. Ideally the OCP should be completed in December. Another priority that will include numerous public consultations and discussions is the potential of a new fire hall. We have included a onetime supplement in this year’s budget for a professional to undertake the public consultation process and develop a detailed cost estimate of a new fire hall. We want to inform the public of all relevant facts prior to taking the issue of borrowing to referendum. With an understanding of the rationale for a new fire hall, detailed costing, possible location, potential size and amenities, the public will be provided with a common knowledge base to make an informed decision at the time of the referendum. More to come on this topic. And again, public consultation is a huge factor. Take the time to become involved in the decision making process. Striking a balance for the entire community takes your input. Karen Unruh is in her first term as a Creston councillor. She can be reached at karen.unruh@creston.ca or 250-428-4148.

Small communities offer closer connection

The BC Recreation and Parks Association held its annual symposium recently and, yet again, a raft of information was shared amongst some 300 or so delegates comprised of programmers to managers to elected officials,

From the Centre Neil Ostafichuk plus everyone in between. In some cases, I believe smaller centres such as ours can benefit more as they listen to what their peers are doing in that seething mass of humanity called the Lower Mainland. In some ways, I believe we have the advantage as programmers

and facility operators in the Kootenays (and many other smaller centres) since we tend to do a lot more varied duties to move our departments forward. Often, there may be only one or two in a particular department and frequently significantly fewer resources. It was pretty apparent though; no one is sitting around with their feet up on the desk, as many of the obstacles and challenges were the same whether you were in a huge municipality or not. Somewhat related (squirrel!) was an interesting was a news story I caught out the corner of my eye during some downtime about a Just Say Hello campaign a group in the Lower Mainland was promoting. Basically it was to encourage people to take the time to say hello to a stranger to try and develop an increased awareness and friendliness in the area. SEE COMMUNITY, PAGE 8

enjoy life without the constant temptation to scroll through meaningless posts. We can put our access to knowledge to use and educate ourselves. But we shouldn’t completely shut out everything that may seem “pointless” because it is a part of our gen-

eration’s culture and we just need to limit it. We take selfies and laugh at stupid memes, but that’s us and it’s how we are. There are endless pros and cons to technology and the Internet but we just need to be careful that we don’t become slaves to our phones.

My last column ended with these words: “ ‘Michael, your prince’ is the One who was/is the champion on God’s side in the great controversy. And He will save His people.” Consider, Michael, Jesus, “the great Prince who has charge of your people” is in charge of

DANIEL 11 PROPHECIES By Pastor Ian Cotton

Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church God’s work here on earth and He has never lost a war. He has at His command all the angels of heaven and will always be successful in the battle with Satan. Satan also has angels — “one third of the angels fell from heaven when Satan was cast out.” That means that for every evil angel, God has two and He guarantees success in our battles too! If you feel overstretched by temptations and from the allurements all around, just remember that with Jesus on your side you are always in a majority and will be successful in your battles. The phrase “your people” makes it certain that the prophecies pertain to the destiny of God’s people, both in the Old Testament and New Testament times. The themes of chapters 8 and 9 are continued in chapter 11. In Old Testament times, literal Israelites were God’s people and all terms must be related geographically to the points of the compass radiating from a Palestinian centre. In

Community FROM PAGE 7

Bizarre to me, but perfectly understandable, this is one of the intangibles that comes with living in a small community; in fact, if you are walking down main street here and someone doesn’t say hello or give a nod, you begin to wonder what’s wrong. Often I find it’s something simple like your shirt is on inside out or your fly is open, but we all know if you are in a major centre and start smiling and saying hello to everyone in the mall, you get some pretty weird looks. I wish them luck in the campaign — the one challenge will be getting people to look up from their phones and take out their ear buds to actually acknowledge.

Q

When we finally learn a good balance between virtual and true reality we could be amazing. We have the world at our fingertips. Emily Ritter-Riegling is a Grade 9 student at Prince Charles Secondary School. The Teen Take is a column co-ordinated by the Teen Action Committee.

New Testament times, Israel means the redeemed, and the meaning of these terms ceases to be local inasmuch that God’s Israel is scattered all over the world. If we are to make sense of prophecy and current events, it is vital for us to understand this. Remember that the angel said that he had come to give Daniel an understanding of things to come and these events are recorded in Chapters 11 and 12. We find such terms as the latter day “king of the north.” A spiritual “Babylon” and an “Egypt” that denies it knows God. The use of these terms, as with “your people” reminds us that the church is at the heart of all prophecy and all else is present because of relationship to it for good or evil. The language of Daniel 11 is not symbolic but literal. Daniel chapters 2, 7 and 8 are prophetic symbolism. But in Daniel 11 there are no multielement images, no beasts or horns. Even so, its language is far from easy to understand! It is cryptic, many metaphors employed and many pronouns do not seems to have clear antecedents. The cryptic language Daniel 11 has led to many interpretations. To correctly understand prophecies we must take the time to prayerfully study the Bible and history to find the message that God has for us. As the Apostle Peter wrote, “you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,” so read, pray, study for yourself before consulting with trusted scholars and believers. (2 Peter 1:20) Do not be misled by any single translation and be very careful of any footnotes in study Bibles. Let the Bible interpret itself. Charles Wright correctly warned, “These modern attempts to correct the text of Daniel so as to bring it into closer harmony with the records of Maccabean times … are highly suspicious.” Ian Cotton is the retired pastor of the Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church.

While it is a positive factor for me about small town living, I know other people occasionally might like an “I’d like to just get a jug of milk without talking to everyone” campaign. Ask yourself though — what are you going to remember at the end of the day, getting milk or perhaps sharing a conversation with friends and acquaintances? So, as mentioned, at the conference there was a lot of information presented pertinent to the well-being of our communities, some of which hopefully you will find interesting once I gather all the thoughts together. Some key topics revolved around physical literacy in our lives, social media challenges, building diverse and resilient communities, creating remarkable experiences for our patrons and so on. We look forward to continuing improvement! Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Trolls running wild at Canyon Park CANYON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Troll sightings are on the rise in the Creston Valley, and strange photos of trolls have been popping up everywhere! The Canyon Community Association is planning a magical Mother’s Day event — a troll scavenger hunt — from noon-3 p.m. Sunday at Canyon Park. Children will receive a troll map to help them hunt down nine magician trolls hidden on the Canyon Park grounds. Upon successfully determining the location of all nine trolls, kids will receive a special treat, and an opportunity to win an “I Love Mommy” troll to take home for mom. Flowers will also be available to purchase for moms. As troll hunting is tough work, a concession stand providing hotdogs, pop and chips will run concurrently. Proceeds of the troll scavenger hunt, Mother’s Day flower sales and concession stand will go toward the Canyon Community Association’s ongoing upgrades of the park and hall. As trolls don’t mind getting wet or cold, this event will run rain or shine. Cost for the May 8 event is $5 per child or $10 per family.

information is the census. Censuses have been used for centuries to record information about mothers, fathers, children, and peoples’ ways of life, income and occupations. To see the name, address and profession of an ancestor who lived a hundred years ago or more can be quite exhilarating.

The first census in Canada was conducted by Jean Talon, a civil administrator, in 1666. The census counted all 3,215 inhabitants of European descent and logged their age, sex, marital status and occupation. Talon conducted the census to gather information that would help plan and develop the colony. HOME & GARDEN

Add eye-catching design trends to outdoor spaces this summer

(NC) Outdoor living continues to evolve, as Canadians are expanding their living spaces into the front and backyards at an increasing rate. Design enthusiasts are always looking to industry experts to discover what’s new and hot in outdoor design. Here to share some of this year’s latest outdoor design trends is Sharon Grech, a colour and design expert for Benjamin Moore. Bring indoor luxe outside: Glamourous, multi-functional and classic are all key traits to keep in mind when updating the interior of the home, and the same applies for outside. “Outdoor living spaces are an extension of the home,” says Grech. “Creating backyard living rooms with sectionals and coffee tables, and front yard grand entrances with stunning doors and accessories is the new norm. Install shutters, add more trim around windows or switch out the hardware on your front or back door for something more sophisticated. It’s the little updates that have the biggest impact and will bring the flow from your home’s interior to the exterior.” Design more with less: This year, it’s all about simplicity in design. Eliminate clutter and select sleek furniture to

achieve a minimalistic look. Go through outdoor furniture and don’t be afraid to get rid of the items that don’t serve a purpose. Throw out patio chairs, tables or accessories that are old and clunky. Use only a few select varieties of flowers in the garden and keep garden accessories to a minimum. Go contemporary with pops of colour: Although designers often share their favourite neutrals, it’s crucial to strategically add pops of colour to any space. Light, airy shades and dynamic jewel tones are the go-to palettes this year. Incorporate these trendy colour schemes not only with accessories, but try painting architectural features like the front or back door. To easily add a trendy splash of colour to your doors, Grech recommends English Scone or Crete Countryside from Benjamin Moore. For best results, Grech suggests using a premium paint designed for doors, such as Aura Grand Entrance, which is specially formulated to retain colour integrity and gloss and is easy to apply. Bicycle touring next in library speaker series CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY

The next installment of the Creston Valley Public Library’s Great Outdoors speaker series is “The Ups and Downs of Bicycle Touring” at 7 p.m. May 12 in the library meeting room. Join bicycle enthusiast Bryan Miller as he shares his passion for all forms of cycling especially touring for every age. In January 1982, at age 30, Miller decided that life was getting a little too repetitive so he and a friend started throwing around ideas. After a few beers they came up with the idea of cycle touring around New Zealand — it couldn’t be that hard as New Zealand is a small country! He did cycle New Zealand for four months that year, then moved on to Australia and continued to travel and tour there for another five months. Eventually, the money ran out so they had to head home. Since that first trip, he has toured numerous places in eastern Australia by bicycle, parts of southern B.C., Hawaii and Fiji. The last big adventure was in Chile and Argentina in 2012. In his late 30s and 40s, Miller got involved in road

racing; it was very challenging and he has great memories of the victories and the defeats, but most of all the cycling friendships that developed and continue to this day. During that first cycle tour 34 years ago, he met a young Australian lady in Tahiti. They married in 1985 and their passion for cycling continues to this day. He’s now 65, belongs to the Creston Valley Cycling Club and continues to enjoy different cycle sports. Whether it’s riding mountain roads, touring north, south, east or west, or having a good challenging ride with the local club, a bicycle is a great way to get around. Every day is an adventure while cycle touring: the weather, animals (dead or alive!), birds, camping, getting lost, getting found again, meeting people and much more as he rolls down the road of his choice. He hopes to see you on the road someday. The library’s Great Outdoors series will run once per month for the next several months. Learn how you can get out and get active in the Creston Valley. Watch for upcoming topics “Growing Lavender in the Kootenays” and “Basic Bush Craft”. For more information, contact the library at 250-428-4141.

• Do not use a cash box. Keep your money on you at all times. • Advertise. Place an ad in the newspaper. Post simple, effective signs around the neighbourhood. • Get cash - lots of quarters loonies, toonies and $5 bills. Do this two days before the sale, so that if you forget, you can still get the change on the day before.

ice v d A & s p i T

• Prepare your staging area. Make your sale inviting and easy to browse.Walk through your sale as if you were there to buy something. How does it feel? Are things clearly marked? Is it easy to move around? Are your books on the ground in boxes? Or are they placed neatly on shelves or tables? Would you pay $10 for that porcelain cat? • You can lure customers by placing highly-desirable items near the road.

• A group sale is better then selling alone. More stuff draws more traffic. • Label things well. • Be ready to go the night before so that you don’t have to rush around in the morning. • Price things carefully. Surprisingly, you can often make more money (and get rid of more junk) by pricing things low. • Keep a ledger. Jot down a description of each item and how much you sold it for.

• Play background music. It can be a little uncomfortable to visit a garage sale (or to host one) when there’s complete silence in the yard or driveway. But don’t play offensive music either — play something appropriate for your audience. • Make it easy for shoppers to test electronic items. Make sure you have an extension cord handy so that people can test them.

Previous shows like The Elusive Heart and Finding the Common Beat explored this format for the music theatre experience, which is entertaining, informative and moving, far more than the sum of its parts. Timothy Braatz has done a fabulous job with the script that weaves it all together with humor and lighthearted introspection.
