Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project
Open House and Invitation to Comment NWP Coal Canada Ltd. (Proponent) is proposing to develop an open pit metallurgical coal mine in the Elk Valley, referred to as the Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project (proposed Project). The proposed Project would be located approximately 12 km northeast of Sparwood, British Columbia, and it is estimated that it would produce 3.7 million run-of-mine tonnes per year. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an Environmental Assessment Certificate (EAC) before work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. Prior to the submission of an Application by the Proponent for an EAC, the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) must approve the Application Information Requirements for the proposed Project. As part of the Application Information Requirements, Valued Components must be identified, which are environmental, economic, social, heritage, and health components that may experience potential effects as a result of the proposed Project. The Valued Components are outlined in the Valued Components for Environmental Assessment document, which details components to be studied and the areas in which the studies would occur. Open House EAO invites the public to attend an Open House about the environmental assessment process, the proposed Project, and the draft Valued Components. An open house will be held: At:

On:

a large humanitarian impact year after year.” Asked why he thinks the event is so successful each year, Cutler pointsed out a variety of reasons. “Grand Goave is approximately the same size as Cranbrook and it’s easy for people to envision themselves when they think of the residents there”. He also said that an important factor is that 100 per cent of the profit from Gala evening goes directly to helping the people of Haiti. “Our guests are gratified that their donations go directly to the people,” said Cutler, adding that one of the easiest ways to contribute is to attend the annual Hungry For Life Gala and Auction, uncovering a third reason; it’s an entertaining, fun evening to attend. “This event is the result of many volunteers and businesses working together locally to financially support our work in Haiti. It’s what keeps us going back.” There are still a few tickets available for this year’s Hungry For Life Gala and Auction which takes place on Saturday, May 7th at the Cranbrook Curling Club. Once again it will feature renowned auctioneer and entertainer Gery Schubert and the Prime Rib and Seafood Dinner is catered by the Stone Soup Challenge Winner and Executive Chef at The Heid-Out, Rusty Cox. There will be over 250 silent auction items and 10 live auction items. Live music for dancing starts after the dinner and auction portion of the evening and there will be free rides home provided between 10pm and 2am. This year’s theme is ‘Under the Sea’ and guests are encouraged to dress either semi-formally or in the style of the event. Tickets are $125 each, a portion of which is tax deductible, and can be purchased individually or in tables of eight. For more information, to purchase tickets or to donate auction items please contact Michele Bates at 250-919-5403 or Jill Cutler at 250-4264669.

OBITUARY
DIANE MARGARET DUNBAR It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our daughter, sister, auntie & friend, Diane Margaret Dunbar, who passed away on April 20 at the age of 56, after a lengthy illness. Diane's family was everything to her and she loved having them all over for big family dinners. She was an excellent cook and prepared many wonderful meals for family and friends. Diane loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own, showering them with love and many treats and gifts. Diane was predeceased by her father Donald, sister Melanie and by her longtime common-law husband and the love of her life, Pete (Walter) Boggs. She is survived by her mother and best friend Eileen, her brother Allen (Margaret), sister Betty-Ann (Scott), brother Gerald (Lana), 6 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews. She had a special place in her heart for the nurses on the 3rd floor and especially for Dr. Madelaine, whose kindness and warmth towards Diane will be forever appreciated by her family. Diane's warmth, generosity and kind, gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. Diane was laid to rest with her father on Monday, April 25, followed by a celebration of her life. "Go rest high on the mountain, your work on Earth is done."
OBITUARY
Hazel, Beryl Durham August 12, 1929-April 29, 2016 Hazel Beryl Durham passed away peacefully April 29, 2016 with her husband and children by her side. Hazel was predeceased by her parents Bill and Alice Dilts. She joined her eldest sister Lill, who passed away on the same day 44 years prior. She was also predeceased by her sister Nancy and brother Buzzy. She leaves to mourn; her husband of 66 years, James (Jim) Durham, daughters Roberta, Debbie (Tom), sons Mac and Greg (Kathy), grandchildren Randie (Thomas), Amanda (Riley) Scott, Tim, Tessa, Samantha, Megan, Brianna, Kayla, Austin & Jackson and 7 great grandchildren. Hazel was born in Elko on August 12, 1929. She was the third eldest in a family of 12 children. She was raised in Waldo and on the family farm in the Plumbob. As a young lady Hazel worked as a waitress at the Nu Way Cafe in Cranbrook. Jim saw Hazel standing on a hill side in a nice white blouse. It was love at first sight for Jim. Hazel took a while to convince. Jim pursued the relationship and after a 5 year courtship married her on September 27, 1950. The first 6 years of their marriage were busy. They moved around, living in logging camps working for Knight’s Lumber Camp in places like the Crowsnest. In 1956, they moved to their present residence so that Roberta could start school. Over the years they expanded the house, the farm and the family, making Jaffray their home for life. Hazel worked hard beside her husband, teaching her children how to throw and stack hay bales, drive a tractor and move irrigation. Hazel volunteered as a Brownie and Guide leader, as the Galloway Curling Club and Jaffray Hall secretary and an organizer of Mayday celebrations. She couldn’t teach her husband to dance, so she spent many hours dancing with her children around the living room. Hazel loved music and had a lovely singing voice. She will be missed, but will always be remembered as feisty, candid, and bold. She was selfless, providing wisdom and advice as needed. She was and will continue to be a source of strength and courage inside us all. A Celebration of Life at the Jaffray Community Hall will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 2pm to 5pm. In lieu of Flowers please make donations to the Fernie Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
OBITUARY
John William Bissett “Jackâ€? 1935 – 2016 We sadly said farewell to our Jack on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Kimberley Special Care Home. Jack was born on August 14, 1935 in Vancouver and started his career with his dad doing lighting at Empire Stadium leading to long support for the BC Lions. Jack went on to BCIT and achieved an Electrical Trade Certificate and thereafter worked mostly for BC Hydro. Over the years Jack played baseball, curled, bowled, golfed and was an avid Kootenay Ice fan. Many fun trips were made to Reno and Vegas with pals. He and Lil enjoyed camping at the local lakes and taking road trips across Canada. Jack was a very special man who loved his family and was dearly loved in return. He was kind and generous with a wonderful gift of laughter bringing many good friends into his life whom he cherished. Even through the long journey of Alzheimer’s his beautiful spirit shone through charming everyone with his smiles and gentle good nature. He will be greatly missed. Jack leaves to mourn his loving partner Lillian, sons Daryl (Bev) Bissett and Monte (Laura) Bissett, daughter Jaimie Lee Glass (John Futa), grandchildren Shawn, Jarret, Stephanie, Mathew, Jesse, Cameron, Ashley and Dolan and nine great grandchildren. Also sadly missing Jack are his extended family Rob (Jacki) D'Etcheverry and children Rylan and Tyson and Ryan (Tanya) D'Etcheverry and children Daxton and Jasper. Favourite words of Jack’s by Henry Van Dyke were‌. Time is too slow for those who wait Too swift for those who fear Too long for those who grieve Too short for those who rejoice But for those who love Time is not. There will be no service by Jack’s request. Many hugs and thanks to the staff at the Pines for Jack’s excellent care. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Protect your horse by 1. putting on flysheets and fly masks 2 . use fly repellent sprays or ointments 3. keep up to date on vaccinations 4. clean water troughs often to reduce potential breeding grounds 5. practice good manure management Lastly, for all of us, we often overlook one area of insect control, the natural predators. Bats, for example, consume up to a 1000 flying insects in just one hour. Helping them helps us and our pets in the battle with some of those annoying insects. Be aware that some insects like mosquitoes are more than an annoying inconvenience. For example, they can carry the dangerous heartworm disease that can be deadly to dogs, cats and other animals. For dogs and cats the most sensitive areas for insect bites are nose, ears and stomach. Some natural remedies to bring your pet relief from these bites can be: - Aloe vera works as a repellent and a remedy. Use the juice from the plant or purchase an aloe vera lotion permitted to be used on pets - Make a paste of baking soda mixed with water to be applied a few times a day. Be aware that some products contain permethrin or specific essential oils which are toxic to cats. As well, try to keep your pets inside during the times when insects are most active which is early mornings and evenings. The west nile virus is perhaps the most well known disease which can affect horses due to mosquito bites. As well horses tormented by insects sometimes do not feed properly which can result in weight loss.

This Mother’s Day, don’t forget Grandma. Regardless of her age and state of health, your grandmother deserves special attention too, and there are thousands of ways you can give her some. Just remember that it’s usually the simplest treats that make her happy. Whether or not you can organize a family get-together, take advantage of Mother’s Day to share quality time with your grandmother. Have a meal at your house or at a restaurant, or picnic together at a park. Take a walk or an outing in the car; visit a museum or go to a concert. These are all activities that your grandmother will remem ber for years to come. Is your grandmother housebound? Bring her a small cake or other dessert she really
likes and take a moment to enjoy it with her. Make her laugh, and talk about things that are close to her heart. Ask for her advice, and make sure she knows that you love and care for her. A photo can be another way to please your grandmother. Give her a recent photo of yourself or the whole family or a souvenir photo that will remind her of a wonderful time. If it’s framed, offer to help her hang it on a wall. Other great gift ideas are a soft cashmere shawl to keep her warm, a personalized mug that she can use to enjoy her favourite drink or a nice cushion to support her back. Above all, don’t miss this opportunity to visit her; on Mother’s Day, your presence will be her most beautiful gift.

Students, parents, teams and solo walkers turned out to help in the fight against MS at last year’s Scotia Bank MS Walk. by Brian Coombs This year’s Scotia Bank MS Walk is taking place on Sunday, May 15 at Baker Park and organizers are hoping for another great turnout. Teams and individuals get sponsors and often donate cash themselves to help out in the battle against this disease. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. It attacks the protec-
tive covering of nerves - myelin. This covering is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses through nerve fibres and the disease can a host of symptoms ranging from relatively minor to devastating. Cyndie Dilts, organizer of this year’s walk, was diagnosed with MS back in 1993. “Initially, it was terrifying,” said Dilts. “I was not walking very well, I had double vision and couldn’t drive. I also had a young child at the time and just didn’t have the energy a mother of a two-yearold had to have. It was
probably one of the worst times of my life.” After spending some time in the hospital, Dilts had an MRI and the diagnosis came. “I started the support group about four years into the disease. I thought this was something that need to be brought to attention,” said Dilts. “Most of us look fine, even when we are having an attack, but inside we are not.” Over the years Dilts has lost people she knew well to the disease and this spurred something within her to try to help find a cure. “Yes, there will defi-

nitely be a cure some day,” said Dilts. “There are lots of disease modifying treatments right now, so I believe there will be a cure for this.” This is Dilts’ fourth year organizing the MS Walk. While it is a large undertaking, she explained that the increased awareness and funds to help find a cure make it all worthwhile. The check-in time for this year’s walk is at 8 a.m., at Baker Park with a start time of 10 a.m. There is an early checkin on May 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tamarack Centre. For more information
about TeamMS, please contact Maureen Brown at Maureen.Brown@ mssociety.ca or at 604602-3243 / 1-800-2687582 ext. 7243. Bring a team of friends, family or coworkers to fundraise for the event and walk with them on Sunday May 15 at the Scotia Bank MS Walk. There will be snacks, refreshments, music and family-friendly activities. Wheelchairs, scooters, strollers, in-line skates are all welcome. The route is accessible to everyone.

2016 Dodge Durango Overall: Dodge’s popular seven-seat tall wagon now drinks less fuel, drives sportier and gets new wheel styles for 2016. Powertrain: A 3.6-litre V6, found in most Chrysler-brand vehicles, makes 290 horsepower, which has gas-saving stop-start technology; a 360-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is the obvious choice when towing and heavy hauling are called for; eight-speed automatic transmissions for all. Dodge should be celebrated as it continues to improve its threerows-of-seats Durango year after year. Its macho exterior still leaves the impression that it dines on Ford Explorers or Chevrolet Traverses anytime it wants, and
features Dodge’s LED “racetrack” taillights that successfully debuted on the Dodge Charger and Dart. The highly regarded 290-horsepower V6 -- standard in the SXT and Crew models -- now gets a system that automatically shuts off the engine when stopped, and then re-fires when you let off the brake pedal. Dodge claims it should create a small improvement in city fuel economy, but it doesn’t have official figures yet. The optional 360-horsepower V8 installed in the R/T and range-topping Citadel models carries over unchanged. The “Hemi” has a variable-displacement system that reduces fuel consumption by shutting down half of the en-

gine’s cylinders under light-load conditions. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board, which doesn’t seem to affect tow ratings one way or the other; V8 Durangos can still lug up to 3,360 kilograms (2,830 for the V6) and can also carry up to seven passengers when using all three rows of seats, although second-row twin high-back bucket seats can also be specified. Dodge also brags that the Durango’s big fuel tank allows you to travel close to 1,000 kilometres without making a pit stop . . . for fuel, that is, thanks to the fuel efficiency in V6 models. Since the same designers who penned the GC’s interior also created the Durango’s innards,
comfort and roominess are also first rate. Neat touches include a rotary-dial gearshift mounted on the centre console, the Uconnect infotainment system with a 21.5-centimetre touchscreen and available steeringwheel-mounted paddle shifters. Durango options include a system that alerts you when another vehicle is about to overtake or is traveling in your blind spot(s). Another system alerts you when cross traffic is approaching from behind as you’re backing up. For 2016, the Durango is available with the unusually named Brass Monkey package. In includes gloss-black detailing outside and burnished bronze 20-inch wheels. Additionally, two “Beats” audio
systems are available for the R/T and Citadel. Base price (incl. destination): $42,400 (2015) Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (290) Optional engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (360) Layout: Front-engine, fourwheel-drive Transmission: Eight-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 13.9/9.8 Weight (kg): 2,230

Thanks to you moms! Mother’s Day, just like spring, has come a little early. It’s important to show appreciation and thanks to the mothers, grandmas, aunts and all the special women out there, and all their hard work in supporting and raising their family. Moms work hard for us, yet we sometimes forget to thank them. However, finding that perfect gift to show appreciation can be a little difficult. Hanging baskets or planters are one of the best things to give every Mother’s
Day. They can fit on a small balcony or deck, they can provide a burst of color and can attract hummingbirds or butterflies. From a smaller planter to large hanging baskets in multiple styles there is something for everyone. There are mixtures designed to grow well in shady areas or flourish in the sun. You can also make it personalized by picking out the style of basket you want and its color combinations. Just remember, all plants need food throughout the course of the
season. Supertunias, waves and those really big growers are also really big feeders. We use a water soluble type fertilizer weekly to get the best growth in our containers. To make sure that Mom is successful, consider if her space is sunny or shady and how much maintenance she wants to provide. Either can have beautiful blossoms, but they will thrive in their right sunlight conditions. Plants bearing the Proven Winner brand are plants designed to thrive
in tough conditions and require far less maintenance. An exciting newer rose favourite is the Campfire Rose. It is one of the best bicolour rose that is hardy to plant, even in Kimberley. The ‘Campfire’ rose was named to honour a painting by the famous Canadian artist Thomas John “Tom” Thomson. This rose produces yellow centres, with pink to red fringes and fragrant blossoms and has a compact growth habit. Celebrating Mother’s Day with a gift is

Contestant Nathan Hilton pitches the Junior Dragon’s Den judges The inaugural Cranbrook Junior Dragons Den business competition took place recently at the Key City Theatre. The event saw 4 youth businesses from the East Kootenay, vying for dominance as they pitched their wares to a panel of local dragons (aka. ‘the judges’) in front of a live audience. Competing in three different divisions, Junior (Grades 8-10), Senior (Grades 11-12) and College/ University, competitors had 5 minutes to pitch to the judges, following the airing of a short promotional video which had been produced for the competition, highlighting their business or business concept. “We were very pleased with the results for the launch of the competition here and look forward to bigger and better things, as the word gets out and the compe-
tition grows”, said Sean Campbell GM at CFDC East Kootenay in Cranbrook. Overall winner in the College/University Division, Nathan Hilton, said that it was definitely a different experience for him. “It was scary at first,” said Hilton. “But the judges and MC were very helpful in making it a calm experience. Still, having to pitch for five minutes was difficult.” Hilton’s company, Black Dust Apparel, is something he has been working on for some months now. Hilton describes it as “A highend streetwear company based in Cranbrook fusing Eastern culture and aesthetics with modern streetwear silhouettes to create a look unique to Black Dust.” Hilton credits his mother, Sioban Staplin, with being the seamstress to create proto-

I needed more postage on my letter and he gave me his change so I wouldn’t have to run back to my car and get my purse! He just smiled and said pay it forward! I appreciated his Random Act of Kindness! Slugs: To everyone who chases the beautiful Canada Geese in the Parkland Middle School field. Nearly every day, people harass and disturb the Geese. I’ve seen students throw stones and sticks. Some dog owners encourage their dogs to chase the Geese. This is against the law you know, to
interfere with wildlife. Shame on you! Hugs: A rolling hug to Québec’s transport minister Jacques Daoust for announcing just this morning that he will be taking this measures to ensure drivers respect cyclists with a 1.5 metre distance and stiffer fines. If only BC was to learn from this wonderful initiative... Slugs: Big slugs to the management at Kootenay Ice for having the most expensive ticket prices in the WHL. We are in a hospitality area, and most families cannot afford to take a family of 4 to a hockey game. LOWER the prices and put some bodies in the seats. Hugs: Huge hugs to the Sun Valley Singers for sharing their talents and time over the last 17 years. Looking forward to many more fantastic concerts!

The Royal Canadian Legion Cranbrook District Branch #24 continues to support EKFH and the regional healthcare needs of our community with a $10,000 donation towards the purchase of a colonoscope for the Endoscopy Clinic at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The generous donation came from the proceeds of the annual Poppy Fund Campaign. The Cranbrook gift is joining those from other Legions in the East Kootenay Zone for a total contribution of $20,000 for the equipment. “It is wonderful to see how the Legions from the different communities in the East Kootenay region come together to support the purchase of a piece of equipment that will benefit healthcare services in the entire region” said Cassandra Schwarz, EKFH Executive Director. The Royal Canadian Legion #24 has been generously donating critical funds to health care for over a decade. With this recent gift, East Kootenay Foundation for Health is proud to announce that RCL #24 and the Poppy Fund Campaign has had an impact of over $80,000 in gifts aiding veterans and their families in the East Kootenays. Without the generosity of the public who continue to support Poppy Fund Campaigns across the nation this support for veterans and the community would not be possible. Visit www.ekfh.ca.
